In several poneroid ant species, mated workers alone undertake reproduction. The reproductive systems of such species have been examined extensively. However, few studies have investigated species with alate queens, which reproduce after shedding their wings. We compared body sizes and the numbers of ovarioles between queens and workers in the ant Cryptopone sauteri with alate queens. We also compared ovariole development between the castes to evaluate their reproductive systems. Approximately 60% of the nests collected were queenless. We often detected unmated queens in the nests throughout the year, but did not obtain strong evidence for their reproduction. Although significant differences were observed in the number of ovarioles and body characteristics between the queens and workers, the differences were not as prominent as those observed in Formicinae and Myrmicinae. We propose two alternative hypotheses, failure of nuptial flight or postponement of reproduction, to explain the presence of unmated queens in the nests.  相似文献

Given the centrality of chemical communication in social insects, there are many selective pressures acting on morpho‐functional traits that mediate chemical pheromones. On the last gastral sternite of Polistes females, there is an important exocrine surface secreting chemical pheromone, named Van der Vecht's organ. It is involved in chemical defence of the nest, in rank and nestmate recognition, preventing workers from direct reproduction. Allometric differential growth of phenotypic traits between castes of social insects is generally considered as an indication of incipient physical castes. European Polistes present different nesting strategies and reproductive choices. Here, we carry out a comparison of Van der Vecht's organ size between castes of four European Polistes to provide a general measure of dimorphism. We show that Van der Vecht's organ of Polistes dominula and Polistes nimphus foundresses shows an allometric development being enlarged with respect to workers. Otherwise, no allometries have been highlighted in the other two studied species (i.e. Polistes associus and Polistes biglumis). Therefore, our data show that neither rigid monogyny nor specific nesting habits foster the evolution of true morphological castes in primitively eusocial taxa. Thus, at least two other species of Ezuropean Polistes show real evidence of incipient morphological castes.  相似文献

Physically isolating organisms from disease agents should reduce the likelihood of disease transmission and infection, and increase survival and growth, particularly in more vulnerable, early ontogenetic stages. During nest founding in fungus-growing ants, foundresses of most genera use a garden platform to isolate the incipient fungal garden from the soil of the underground chamber. We studied nest founding in Acromyrmex octospinosus to test the hypotheses that the use of a platform (rootlets used to suspend the fungus garden): (i) reduces the likelihood that the garden will be contaminated by soil-borne microbial pathogens; (ii) results in more rapid growth of a young colony; and (iii) increases colony survival. We manipulated natural incipient nests to have gardens either in contact with or isolated from soil surrounding the chamber, and nests with and without foundresses present. We found a higher incidence of infection in gardens that were in contact with the chamber soil and without queens, compared with gardens isolated from the chamber soil with and without foundresses. The production of eggs, larvae and pupae, as well as leaf area harvested, were significantly different between nests with and without platforms, but there were no differences in the production of workers nor garden biomass. Likewise, there were no differences between treatments in colony survival rates over 8 weeks. Using smaller incipient gardens, however, gardens with and without platforms differed in survivorship rates after 24 hours. The results indicate that the use of a platform to cultivate an incipient fungal garden is an adaptation to reduce soil-borne diseases and increase colony performance. The ant speciesLeptothorax tuberum was shown to be predominantly monogynous. Queens usually mate once only but some nests may have a multiply-mated queen or are partially or serially polygynous. As expected from these results, within nest relatedness between workers and between workers and alate queens was found to be high. Almost fifty percent of nests had no nest queen which may indicate high queen mortality, queens leaving to found new nests or nest fragmentation. Observed female investment frequencies (IF o ) were not significantly different from those expected on the basis of worker control of sexual production and the relatedness estimates of workers to alate queens and workers to males calculated from isozyme data (IF E ). These values were not consistent with queen control. There was no evidence for lower IF o s in queenless nests nor for higher IF o s in larger nests classified by worker number. When nests were classified by sexual productivity, however, there was a strong rank correlation between productivity and female bias. This is the first study of an ant species to test observed IF against expected IF calculated without inferring between caste relatedness from worker data or pooling of data from different castes.  相似文献

Polistes atrimandibularis is the obligate and permanent parasite of the social paper wasp Polistes biglumis bimaculatus. This parasite lives together with the host foundress for a considerable period on the invaded nest. Ovarian development was measured in females of the host species (foundresses and, when present, workers) from 18 parasitized and 14 non-parasitized colonies. The reproductive capacity of foundresses from parasitized nests decreased faster than that of foundresses from non-parasitized nests. These results indicate that the presence of the parasite lowers reproductive capacity of the host queen. Simultaneously, the fertility of the host worker is inhibited.  相似文献

Until recently, morphological differences between castes in independent-founding polistine wasps were considered absent. This paper investigates the extent of morphological and physiological differences between reproductive (foundress and gyne) and worker castes of Belonogaster petiolata, and tests the hypothesis that caste differentiation in this species occurs pre-imaginally.Foundresses were significantly larger than workers, to the extent that foundress/worker ratios were comparable with those between queens and workers in some swarm-founding Polistinae. Early emerging workers were small, but body size increased over the colony cycle such that late-season workers were similar in size to gynes. In proportion to body size, workers possessed broader heads while foundresses and gynes had broader thoraces and gasters. All queens, 98% of subordinate foundresses, and 95% of over-wintering gynes were inseminated. Workers were never inseminated and lacked mature ovaries in colonies with active queens. However, in the absence of the queen (and other foundresses), 11% of workers developed mature ovaries. Ovarian size and fat content of foundresses and gynes was significantly greater than that of workers. The differences in external morphology and reproductive physiology between castes support the hypothesis that differentiation occurs pre-imaginally. However, imaginal factors, in particular social dominance of the queen, maintain the reproductive subordinance of workers.  相似文献

This paper describes how individual female ocellated wrasse Symphodus ocellatus distribute their spawning among males and nests in space and time. It is based on previously collected genetic data of larvae from ten different nests (used to reconstruct half and full‐sibling groupings both within and among nests on multiple days) and behavioural data of marked females across the reproductive season. Both the genetic analyses and behavioural observations confirm that female S. ocellatus intentionally engage in multiple mating, by repeatedly spawning at the same nest on different days and at several different nests (up to 12 spawning events over 3 weeks), leading to mixed paternity among her young. The main benefit of such high and intentional multiple mating is probably insurance against brood failure due to nest predation, desertion or poor paternal care by the male. These findings reveal that even in systems where females attempt to avoid male‐controlled mixed paternity, they may still engage in intentional multiple mating due to these potential benefits.  相似文献

The relationship between reproductive status and body size in foundresses of Ropalidia plebeiana, an Australian endemic paper wasp forming huge aggregations of nests, was examined. Foundresses with developed ovaries (laying foundresses) in multifoundress colonies tended to be larger than foundresses in single‐foundress colonies and foundresses with undeveloped ovaries (non‐laying foundresses). However, the laying foundress was not always the largest of the foundresses in a colony. Body shape in foundresses varied according to simple allometric growth, while foundresses and first brood females diverged in their growth parameters in the preimaginal stage.  相似文献

1. The seed‐harvester ants Pogonomyrmex rugosus and P. barbatus are ecologically equivalent sister species that have broadly overlapping distributions in the south‐western U.S.A.; however the two species are only sympatric in localised contact zones. 2. Soil regimes at 25–50 cm below the surface were quantified across contact zones to assess abiotic habitat factors related to distribution pattern. Physiological parameters related to foundress survival were also measured in order to test for a correlation between these parameters and distribution pattern. 3. The two species segregated among microhabitats based on soil texture; P. barbatus occurred alone in soils with a higher clay content and/or higher moisture retention. In areas of sympatry, soil texture was similar for both species but was intermediate to that in areas where the two species occurred allopatrically. The pattern of microhabitat segregation was similar across three sites that encompassed a broad range of soil regimes. 4. The only measure of foundress survival correlated with microhabitat differences was an ≈ 8% greater dry mass for alate females of P. rugosus. This resulted in their surviving significantly longer than did alate females of P. barbatus under desiccating conditions. 5. This microdistribution pattern may be caused indirectly by soil texture affecting plant species distribution and hence the seeds available to ants. A companion laboratory experiment demonstrated, however, that soils could also cause this distribution pattern of both ant species directly via effects on foundress wet mass.  相似文献

The occurrence of a pre-imaginal caste determination represents a sort of “point of no return” to eusociality. In some social insect taxa, including Polistes species, the occurrence of distinct queen and worker castes is still debated. Before this report, no clear morphological differences between reproductive and non-reproductive individuals were known. Here we show that several pre-imaginal morphological differences of the Van der Vecht organ occur between foundresses (queens) and workers. Geometric morphometrics revealed that queens are characterized by shape deformations of this organ, which is responsible for a typical allometric growth of the secretory area. This organ is predicted to be larger in foundresses compared to workers because its secretion is involved in defense against ants, in nestmate recognition and in preventing workers from challenging for direct reproduction. The results presented here indicate the existence of an incipient morphological caste determination Polistes gallicus and suggest that this species may have passed the “point of no return” for eusociality.  相似文献

We used DNA microsatellites to study colony kin structure and breeding patterns in the primitively eusocial wasp Polistes biglumis. P. biglumis inhabits cool areas at high altitudes and, as a consequence, has a reduced colony cycle compared to more temperate Polistes. P. biglumis colonies are always founded and controlled by a single foundress, but nest failure is common and foundresses losing their nests do not have time to start new ones due to the short season. Instead, nests are characterized by frequent female turnover, in the form of females taking over (usurpation) other con-specific nests. Our results showed that most nests had offspring from multiple unrelated females, including some where multiple females were not observed in monitoring. Reconstruction of behavioural events from the genetic data revealed three types of multiple matriline nests: (a) nests that were usurped by another female, where the original nest owner disappeared following the usurpation event, (b) nests that were joined by another female, where the original nest owner stayed following the joining event, (c) nests that were both usurped and joined by other females. We also found, for the first time, a clear indication of multiple mating by Polistes females. Moreover, males mating with the same female were related, which may be explained by the lek mating system of P. biglumis. Finally, we analysed the nest sex ratios and how it changed during the season and found that sexes were produced sequentially, males before females.  相似文献

Colony composition inCardiocondyla wroughtoni and the fighting and mating behaviors of 2 types of males, alates and ergatoids, are described. This species is polygynous, with a mean of 7.0 queens per nest, and forms polycalic colonies. Within nests, ergatoid males fight with each other, leading to the death of all but one in single nests. On the other hand, alate males exhibit no aggressive behavior towards any of their colony members. Both types of males conduct intranidal mating with their sisters, though the alate males also conduct nuptial flights. Many alate females leave their maternal nest even if they have already been inseminated by intranidal mating.  相似文献

A strong typhoon, Typhoon 13, which swept through Okinawa on 2 and 3 September 1993, knocked down 57 to 61 of 97Ropalidia fasciata nests. Thirty-five colonies soon reconstructed their nests, and these nests produced 54±46 adults per nest during the remaining two and a half months before winter. The number of females involved in nest reconstruction was 21.3±15.7 per nest. The frequency of foraging activity was significantly higher in nests being reconstructed than in normal nests. As only one out of 205 foundresses marked in spring was found in early September, most cases of nest reconstruction were considered to be made exclusively by females that emerged during the spring and summer of 1993 (progeny females). All of the reconstructed nests but one produced adult females. Many females (31%) collected from the two reconstructed nests were inseminated. As all the reconstructed nests became vacant by early January, indicating completion of the colony cycle, and a large number of nests were established in the spring of 1994, females emerging from reconstructed nests in 1993 probably become foundresses in 1994.Ropalidia fasciata is considered to be, at least partially, bivoltine in Okinawa. The significance of these facts for the evolution of multi-queen social systems in the Polistinae is discussed.  相似文献

Investigation of reproductive strategies of ants in the subfamily Ponerinae is important for understanding of the evolution of social structure and of the significance of caste dimorphisms. The biology of species with mated and egg-laying workers (gamergates) has been studied for many species, however, little attention has been paid to species that reproduce via alate queens only. We investigated the seasonal cycle of changes in the colony structure of Pachycondyla chinensis reproduced by alate queens in western Japan, and found the following novel biological characteristics of this species. P. chinensis showed a remarkable caste dimorphism in ovariole numbers: workers had no ovaries while queens had 18 to 36 ovarioles in their ovaries. The nesting system seemed to be polydomous: 266 of 400 nests collected were queenless. The number of queenless nests increased during the reproductive season. Among the 134 queenright nests, 38 had several mated-queens without significant differences in ovary activation and the remaining 96 nests were monogynous. During winter to early spring, most nests were polygynous. After alate production, most of the old queens seemed to die or be expelled and replaced by new queens. Virgin dealated queens were often found and they seemed to have laid eggs. Received 3 August 2007; revised 19 December 2007; accepted 20 December 2007  相似文献

The expression of alternative traits that benefit eusocial individuals but are not directly involved in reproductive differences among those individuals, which I call ‘eusocially selected traits’, may vary in response to environmental changes if this increases an individual's inclusive fitness. In this study, I describe traits that separate individuals within the reproductive division of labor of Mischocyttarus mexicanus, a eusocial paper wasp, and determine whether observed eusocially selected traits vary across seasons. I examined M. mexicanus because females initiate new nests throughout most of the year where they experience different conditions depending on the season. Findings from this study suggest two main conclusions: (1) phenotypic differences among M. mexicanus females are mixed, showing specialized, generalized, and context‐dependent eusocially selected traits and (2) a female's position within the reproductive division of labor may be influenced by its state. The presence of context‐dependent traits, e.g. large females initiated solitary nests in the spring and grouped nests during the summer, suggests that the payoff for pursuing different positions within the reproductive division of labor changes across seasons. The expression of context‐dependent eusocially selected traits also suggests that, roles, instead of castes, may better reflect the reproductive division of labor among individuals of eusocial species like M. mexicanus.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Pollinating fig wasps (Hymenoptera, Agaonidae) display sex ratio adjustment, producing less female‐biased combined sex ratios as the number of ovipositing females (foundresses) inside a fig increases. Because males have low mobility, the oviposition sites (galled ovules) chosen by each foundress are likely to have consequences for the mating structure of wasp populations within the figs. 2. In this study, the spatial location of male and female progeny of the pollinating fig wasp Liporrhopalum tentacularis developing within figs of its host plant Ficus montana was examined to investigate two questions: (i) are male and/or female wasp offspring clustered together or interspersed? and (ii) is their distribution affected by whether one or two foundresses are present? Microsatellite markers were used to identify the progeny of different foundresses in dual‐foundress figs. 3. More offspring developed in the central part of the figs, compared with the ostiolar and basal parts, irrespective of foundress number. Neither male nor female wasp offspring were clustered within a fig. 4. The sons of the second foundress to enter a fig were positioned at similar minimum distances to both sibling and non‐sibling females, whereas the sons of the first foundress were closer to their sibling females than to non‐sibling females. If male wasps mate predominantly with females in adjacent galls, then the positioning of sons by the second foundresses is beneficial for them both in terms of reduced sibling mating and because they are provided with ready access to the female progeny of the first foundress.  相似文献

Only winged male and female ants generally mate through nuptial flight during the reproductive season. In the ants of Cardiocondyla, the males show wing dimorphism and their reproductive strategies differ depending on the differences in wing morphology. It has been suggested that wingless “ergatoid” males bearing very similar external morphologies to workers mate within natal nests, whereas winged males bearing typical ant male morphology disperse from their nests to mate. However, some behavioral observations suggest that the winged males of some Cardiocondyla ants such as C. obscurior and C. minutior may mate within natal nests before dispersion. We evaluated the factors affecting the mating behaviors of the winged males of C. minutior under laboratory conditions. We found that (1) the winged males remained and mated with virgin females in natal nests when either virgin winged females or the relatively mature pupae of winged females (i.e., at least 10 days) were present in the nest, (2) the winged males dispersed to adjacent nests with virgin winged females when only mated queens and the relatively young pupae of winged females (i.e., <9 days) were present in the nest, and (3) all winged males were accepted by the workers of non-natal nests irrespective of the distance from the natal nests in the field. Although most ergatoid males were accepted by the workers of close non-natal nests, they were all attacked and killed by the workers of distant non-natal nests. These results suggest that intra-nest mating and the dispersion of the winged males of C. minutior are facultatively determined by the condition of winged females (virginity and relative pupal age) in natal nests. Furthermore, our results suggest that winged males are likely to seek mating partners chemically and to mate with virgin winged females.  相似文献

Nest survival rates and reproductive rates of females of the Australian paper wasp, Ropalidia plebeiana, in nest aggregations under a concrete bridge were studied. The annual colony cycle commenced in August with the reutilization of old nests and by the founding of new nests, mainly by associations of foundresses. Distribution patterns of the number of foundresses per nest was nearly random on new nests while contagious on old nests. About one-third of the increase in number of nest was achieved by dividing large, old nests and two-thirds by founding new nests. Nest survival rates for old nests (August to April) and new nests (November to April) were 89.6% and 88.8% respectively, far higher rates than those of other polistine wasps so far reported. The numbers of nests and reproductive females increased during a colony cycle by 2.30 and 10.98 times, respectively. Thus, huge aggregations of nests are probably beneficial for this species by enabling the realization of high reproductive rates. We could find no density-dependent effect in nest growth rate or production of female reproductives. Ratio of cells parasitized by ichneumonid wasps was low. Nests in the central part of an aggregation were prasitized at significantly lower rates than nests on the periphery or scattered nests outside a dense aggregation, suggesting a selfish herd effect.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Sexuals of a leaf-cutting ant, Atta bisphaerica Forel, left their nest for nuptial flights in October to December.
2. When leaving a nest, 53 of the 479 winged sexuals (or alates) observed (11.1%) carried up to three inquiline spiders of Attacobius luederwaldti .
3. Spiders exclusively selected winged sexuals, not workers, and preferred females, indicating their expectation of the stronger flight ability of females. Neither these sexuals nor workers that appeared out of the nest on flight days attempted to remove or attack spiders on the body of alates.
4. New qucens landing from their nuptial flight did not carry spiders, indicating that the spiders had left the ants in the sky to be dispersed by wind.
5. No spiders were found in more than 100 incipient nests, which were estimated to be 2–3 months old. This suggests that the spiders jumped off the alate during mid-flight and dispersed on the wind to inhabit larger nests.  相似文献
