Summary A linear and a non-linear equation for predicting soil and plant water potentials as measured by thermocouple psychrometric techniques were compared. The non-linear predictor was often just as accurate as the linear predictor. The non-linear predictor did not predict positive water potentials. The non-linear predictor was most accurate in the range of zero to 10 negative bars water potential range. The linear predictor was more accurate than the non-linear predictor when water potentials were larger than –30 bars.  相似文献

Thermocouple psychrometers gave lower estimates of water potential of cotton leaves than did a pressure chamber. This difference was considerable for turgid leaves, but progressively decreased for leaves with lower water potentials and fell to zero at water potentials below about −10 bars. The conductivity of washings from cotton leaves removed from the psychrometric equilibration chambers was related to the magnitude of this discrepancy in water potential, indicating that the discrepancy is due to salts on the leaf surface which make the psychrometric estimates too low. This error, which may be as great as 400 to 500%, cannot be eliminated by washing the leaves because salts may be secreted during the equilibration period. Therefore, a thermocouple psychrometer is not suitable for measuring the water potential of cotton leaves when it is above about −10 bars.  相似文献

Influence of temperature gradients on leaf water potential   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0       下载免费PDF全文
Water potential was monitored at nine locations along single maize (Zea mays L.) leaf blades with aluminum block in situ thermocouple hygrometers. Water potential showed a continuous decrease toward the tip, with a 2- to 4-bar difference between leaf base and tip under both moist and dry soil conditions. The water potential difference between the soil and the leaf base was about 4 bars. Water potentials decreased during the day and during a drying cycle, and increased at night and after irrigation. Heating a band of a leaf to 40 C or cooling it to 7 C had no influence on the water potential of the affected portion when this was corrected for hygrometer output over standard calibrating solutions at the respective temperatures. Heating or cooling a portion of a leaf had neither short nor long term effects on water potential of more distal leaf portions continuously monitored by hygrometers in dew point readout. Water potential fluctuated with an amplitude of about 1.5 bars and an irregular period of 10 to 30 minutes. Measurements with silver foil in situ psychrometers gave similar results.  相似文献

Abstract. The construction and evaluation of a temperature-corrected in situ thermocouple psychrometer for measurement of leaf water potential (Ψ) is described. The instrument utilized two chromel-constantan thermocouples which allowed for detection of both the psychrometric zero offset and the temperature differential between the sample and the Peltier measuring junction. The psychrometer was subjected to stable temperature gradients while in contact with reference solutions of sodium chloride, and the effects of thermal gradients were quantified. Regression analysis indicated that temperature differentials were responsible for errors in water potential determinations of approximately –7.73 MPa°C−1. When installed on leaves of field-grown cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.), corn ( Zea mays L.) and soybean ( Glycine max L. Merr) the instrument detected temperature differentials up to 0.1°C (–6.0 μV) which were associated with relatively small shifts in psychrometric zero offsets (–0.05––0.75 μV). Results indicated that substantial errors in apparent Ψ were caused by non-isothermal conditions between the leaf and the psychrometer measuring junction. The relative magnitude of these errors could be quantified and the corrected results showed good agreement with conventional psychrometric determination of Ψ on excised samples during a diurnal cycle.  相似文献

Abstract. Cuticular resistance to water vapour diffusion is an important aspect of thermocouple psychrometry and may introduce significant error in the measurement of leaf water potential (Ψ). The effect of the citrus (Citrus mitis Blanco) leaf cuticle on water vapour movement was studied using the times required for vapour pressure equilibration during thermocouple psychrometric measurement of Ψ. Cuticular abrasion with various carborundum powders was used to reduce the diffusive resistance of both the adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces, and the extent of the disruption to the leaf was investigated with light and electron microscopy. Cuticular abrasion resulted in reduced equilibration times due to decreased cuticular resistance and greater water vapour movement between the leaf and the psychrometer chamber. Equilibration times were reduced from over 5 h in the unabraded control leaves to 1 h with cuticle abrasion. This was associated with the decrease in diffusive resistance with cuticular abrasion from over 55 s cm?1 to less than 8 s cm?1 for both the adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces. Scanning electron micrographs of the abraded leaf tissue revealed considerable disruption of the stomatal ledge and of the guard cells, surface smoothing and displacement of waxes into the stomatal aperture, and damage to veins. Observations with the transmission electron microscope revealed frequent disruption of epidermal cell walls, and damage to both the cytoplasmic and vacuolar membranes.  相似文献

Numerous water relation studies have used thermocouple hygrometers routinely. However, the accurate temperature correction of hygrometer calibration curve slopes seems to have been largely neglected in both psychrometric and dewpoint techniques.  相似文献

An instrument was designed which facilitates faster and more accurate sampling of leaf discs for psychrometric water potential measurements. The instrument consists of an aluminum housing, a spring-loaded plunger, and a modified brass-plated cork borer. The leaf-disc sampler was compared with the conventional method of sampling discs for measurement of leaf water potential with thermocouple psychrometers on a range of plant material including Gossypium hirsutum L., Zea mays L., and Begonia rex-cultorum L. The new sampler permitted a leaf disc to be excised and inserted into the psychrometer sample chamber in less than 7 seconds, which was more than twice as fast as the conventional method. This resulted in more accurate determinations of leaf water potential due to reduced evaporative water losses. The leaf-disc sampler also significantly reduced sample variability between individual measurements. This instrument can be used for many other laboratory and field measurements that necessitate leaf disc sampling.  相似文献

Evaporative losses from the cut edge of leaf samples are of considerable importance in measurements of leaf water potential using thermocouple psychrometers. The ratio of cut surface area to leaf sample volume (area to volume ratio) has been used to give an estimate of possible effects of evaporative loss in relation to sample size. A wide range of sample sizes with different area to volume ratios has been used. Our results using Glycine max L. Merr. cv Bragg indicate that leaf samples with area to volume values less than 0.2 square millimeter per cubic millimeter give psychrometric leaf water potential measurements that compare favorably with pressure chamber measurements.  相似文献

The effect of decreases in turgor on chloroplast activity was studied by measuring the photochemical activity of intact sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. cv. Russian Mammoth) leaves having low water potentials. Leaf turgor, calculated from leaf water potential and osmotic potential, was found to be affected by the dilution of cell contents by water in the cell walls, when osmotic potentials were measured with a thermocouple psychrometer. After the correction of measurements of leaf osmotic potential, both the thermocouple psychrometer and a pressure chamber indicated that turgor became zero in sunflower leaves at leaf water potentials of −10 bars. Since most of the loss in photochemical activity occurred at water potentials below −10 bars, it was concluded that turgor had little effect on the photochemical activity of the leaves.  相似文献

Water potential of roots was measured by thermocouple psyohometers in a series of two or more plants ofCynodon dactylon (L.)Pers. interconnected by overground stolons and thus forming one s.c. polycormon. Root water potential was lowest (most negative) in the oldest “mother” plant and increased in younger individua to highest walues in the youngest “doughter” plants. This gradient of root water potential was found although the “mother” plants continued to be watered while watering all daughter plants had been stopped one week before the water potential was measured. Thus the whole polycormon consisting of a series of interconnected individua behaves as one hydrodynamic system where all individual root systems act as if being parts of one sole root system.  相似文献

Water stress created by withholding irrigation at flowering stage (70 days) in pigeonpea resulted in decreased water potential of roots, nodules and leaves. The decreased water potential in nodules resulted in decreased activities of nitrogenase, glutamine synthetase, glutamate dehydrogenase and uricase. However, the activity of allantoinase increased under mild stress with a slight decrease under severe stress. This corresponded with a simultaneous increase in allantoic acid content. Uricase and allantoinase could not be detected in roots and leaves of both control and stressed plants. In roots, the activities of GS and GDH decreased under stress, whereas in leaves, their activities were not affected. Although the water potential recovered in different organs of the stressed plant on re-irrigation, the recovery in the case of some enzymes was not complete.  相似文献

Stem thermocouple hygrometers were subjected to transient and stable thermal gradients while in contact with reference solutions of NaCl. Both dew point and psychrometric voltages were directly related to zero offset voltages, the latter reflecting the size of the thermal gradient. Although slopes were affected by absolute temperature, they were not affected by water potential. One hygrometer required a correction of 1.75 bars water potential per microvolt of zero offset, a value that was constant from 20 to 30 C.  相似文献

Summary Leaf diffusion resistances may lower the values of leaf water potentials found byin situ measurements with silver-foil psychrometers. With the instrumentation used, the bias ranges from zero to increasing negative deviations as leaf diffusion resistances become larger than 3.5 cm-1 sec.Water potentials determined with the dewpoint technique are unaffected by diffusion resistances. In situ measurements by this method may also be carried out with the silver-foil sensor.Hence, one and the same sensor may serve to trace both leaf water potentials and leaf diffusion resistance through dewpoint and psychrometric measurements. re]19760720  相似文献

The cohesion-tension (CT) theory requires stability of liquid water in conducting elements under high tensions. This stability has been measured using different methods, some of which yielded contradictory results. In this study a method is presented to establish known tensions in the water inside conifer tracheids, to detect cavitation events under these conditions and to construct vulnerability curves. Tangential sapwood sections of Juniperus virginiana L. were placed closely over the surface of NaCl solutions with water potentials ranging from -0.91 to -7.57 MPa. Water potentials were measured with a thermocouple hygrometer in contact with the section, and ultrasound acoustic emissions (UAE) from the sections were registered with an ultrasound transducer. The emission rate of signals increased with the concentration of the solution. Exposure of 100 microm sections in the airspace over a solution provided optimal conditions for the rupture of the water column: many tracheid walls bordered on air, and water in the lumen came under high tension. Nevertheless, the water remained in the metastable liquid state for periods of many hours. The vulnerability obtained from simultaneous measurements of water potentials and ultrasound acoustic emissions on sapwood sections was substantially higher than from conventionally measured curves of detached branches. It is argued that the isolation of tracheids in a massive organ as well as the rate of potential decline will influence the probability of cavitations at a given water potential and thus the parameters of the vulnerability curve.  相似文献

Cape gannet Morus capensis chicks depend entirely on fish prey and metabolic water for water requirements during development. Water loss through evaporative cooling due to heat stress is substantial. We measured water flux and field metabolic rates (FMR) of Cape gannet chicks and adults to determine if gannets developed water saving strategies. The water economy index (WEI, g kJ?1) decreased with chick age according to the model WEI = 0.676 – 0.272 × log10(t), indicating that water efficiency increased with age. At fledging, the WEI of chicks was at the level expected of adult desert birds. Desert birds maintain a low WEI by also having a low FMR, whereas Cape gannet chicks have FMR comparable to other seabird species’ nestling requirements. We propose that maintaining low WEI is adaptive for Cape gannets because (1) chicks need to balance water loss through evaporative cooling, (2) fledglings need to overcome a period of up to a week when they cannot ingest any water and (3) adults spend extended periods in the breeding colony during which water can become a limiting factor. Understanding the physiological mechanism of maintaining low WEI will become increasingly important with future rising temperatures.  相似文献

Leaf water potentials measured with a pressure chamber   总被引:31,自引:17,他引:14       下载免费PDF全文
Boyer JS 《Plant physiology》1967,42(1):133-137
Leaf water potentials were estimated from the sum of the balancing pressure measured with a pressure chamber and the osmotic potential of the xylem sap in leafy shoots or leaves. When leaf water potentials in yew, rhododendron, and sunflower were compared with those measured with a thermocouple psychrometer known to indicate accurate values of leaf water potential, determinations were within ± 2 bars of the psychrometer measurements with sunflower and yew. In rhododendron. water potentials measured with the pressure chamber plus xylem sap were 2.5 bars less negative to 4 bars more negative than psychrometer measurements.

The discrepancies in the rhododendron measurements could be attributed, at least in part, to the filling of tissues other than xylem with xylem sap during measurements with the pressure chamber. It was concluded that, although stem characteristics may affect the measurements, pressure chamber determinations were sufficiently close to psychrometer measurements that the pressure chamber may be used for relative measurements of leaf water potentials, especially in sunflower and yew. For accurate determinations of leaf water potential, however, pressure chamber measurements must be calibrated with a thermocouple psychrometer.

Abstract Water stress at a nonacclimating temperature (18–20°C) increased the cold hardiness of Medicagosativa L. (alfalfa) plants. This increased cold hardiness was retained when the previously water-stressed plants were cold acclimated (2–9°C) in the absence of water stress. Water stress during cold acclimation also increased cold hardiness. Alfalfa was demonstrated to suffer injury, measured as decreased growth following freezing, at sub-lethal temperatures. During cold acclimation the turgor potential (ψ) of watered plants increased, whereas the solute potential and the water content per unit dry weight decreased. The large positive psgrdap of acclimated plants indicates that the decreased water content per unit dry weight is related to an increased proportion of tissue dry matter rather than to tissue dehydration.  相似文献

The use of tree root suckers to estimate root water potential   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. This paper describes a simple method to estimate the root water potential of trees using the root suckers as xylemic probes. On the day before the water potentials were measured in pressure chamber, all the sucker shoots were enclosed in plastic bags to prevent transpiration. Under the premise that the potential at two points in a flow system would be equal if there were no flux between these points, the sucker shoot water potential estimates the root water potential. The results are not dependent on the sucker architecture, are consistent with the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum concept, and are supported by psychrometric measurements.  相似文献

Water potentials of leaves from well-watered plants were measured. There were species-specific differences in both the total and the osmotic potentials of pea (Pisum sativum), tradescantia (Tradescantia versicolor), rose (Rosa hybrida), bitter lemon (Citrus aurantium) and olive (Olea europaea). With tradescantia the potential measured after the destruction of turgor by freezing was less negative than before, a result which suggests that the value obtained is not identical with the real osmotic potential of the leaf. detached leaves of all species showed less negative water potential readings, and those of pea even a less negative osmotic potential, when cut into five pieces than when measured intact. Application of vaseline to the cut surface of the leaves reduced this effect with rose and olive, though not with tradescantia and pea. Measurements were also made of the water potentials of comparable leaves of tradescantia and bitter lemon, attached to and detached from their plants; when bitter lemon leaves were detached and watered through their petioles which protruded outside the thermocouple chamber, their potential became considerably less negative than when the same leaves had been attached to well watered plants. However, similar leaves whose cut petioles were introduced into the thermocouple chamber registered an even less negative potential. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that when a leaf is cut off a plant, and even more so when it is cut into sections, the water previously held by matrix forces becomes available to dilute the “spilled” cell sap and to be absorbed by adjacent cells and thereby to increase their turgor and render the net water potential of the leaf less negative. Similarly, the apparent negative turgor of the succulent, tradescantia leaves is likely to be due to dilution of the osmotic component by cell wall water. The discrepancies between the readings of attached and detached leaves indicate a considerable whole-plant matrix component, and the results as a whole suglest that thermocouple psychrometer readings carried out on detached and even more on cut-up leaves may be artifacts and that it is desirable to determine water potentials on leaves attached to their plants.
