The growth and physiological characteristics of canopy trees are expected to differ systematically from those of understory trees on the basis of size-dependent aspects of biomechanics, resource availability, and life history. Although such differences have previously been noted, there has been relatively little effort to quantify these in terms of interspecific allometric relationships. Asymptotic maximal height (Hmax) is advocated as a measure of the size of dicotyledonous woody plants for this purpose. Height diameter (H–D) relationships in 38 species within six genera of Malaysian rain forest trees are well described by an asymptotic model, and thus provide a basis for estimating Hmax using static observational data. Three important aspects of tree growth strategies are shown to be predictable on the basis of these values: average tree growth rates are positively related to Hmax, while wood density and the initial allometric slope of (species-specific) H–D relationships are negatively related to Hmax. These patterns may be explained by an association of low light levels with slow growth and high density wood in understory species; the latter property may in turn allow for relatively high allometric slopes of H–D relationships in saplings of small-statured species. Analyses that control for phylogenetic differences provide evidence that such interspecific allometric patterns are the product of convergent evolution. These results are consistent with the idea that much ecological variation within species-rich taxa of southeast Asian rain forest trees is related to differentiation along a vertical axis of tree size.  相似文献

The length–weight relationships (LWRs) for three native fish species of the Comacchio Lagoon (northwestern Adriatic Sea, Italy) were determined. The species Zosterisessor ophiocephalus (Pallas, 1814), Pomatoschistus canestrini (Ninni, 1883) and Knipowitschia panizzae (Verga, 1841), were sampled monthly from 2010 to 2014. Both Pcanestrini and Kpanizzae are listed as protected species in the Habitat Directive and the Berne Convention and there is no information on their LWRs in FishBase.  相似文献

Comparisons of the isoelectric points of small and large subunits of ribulose biphosphate carboxylase extracted from a number of diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid Avena species have been used to obtain information on the nuclear and cytoplasmic genome relationships within the genus. All species tested had small subunits with similar isoelectric points, so their analysis provided no information of taxonomic value. Three types of large subunits could be distinguished by this method, and the distribution of each among the available species provides strong evidence against the involvement of a C genome diploid (such as A. ventricosa) as the maternal parent in the formation of either tetraploid or hexaploid species. One type of large subunit was confined to the perennial tetraploid, A. macrostachya, and its position in the genus and possible origin are discussed. The value of this approach in studying genome relationships within the genus Avena and related genera is assessed.  相似文献

Leaf demography and growth of six common, co-occurring woody plant species that varied in stature (tree vs. shrub) and leaf texture (sclerophyllous, coriaceous, malacophyllous) were examined in a subtropical savanna parkland in southern Texas, USA. We tested the hypotheses that, (a) leaves of plants with evergreen canopies would have longer life spans than those of deciduous species; (b) supplementation of soil moisture would decrease leaf life span in both evergreen and deciduous species; (c) species responses to increased soil moisture availability would be inversely related to leaf longevity; and (d) deciduous growth forms would exhibit a greater growth response to increased soil moisture availability than their evergreen counterparts.A variety of seasonal leaf habits (evergreen, winter-deciduous and summer-deciduous canopies) and leaf life spans (median = 66 to 283 days) were represented by the targeted species, but there was no clear relationship between seasonal leaf habit and leaf longevity. Among species with evergreen canopies, median leaf longevity ranged from short (Zanthoxylum fagara = 116 days; Condalia hookeri = 158 days) to long (Berberis trifoliolata = 283 days) but did not exceed 1 yr. In fact, leaf longevity in evergreen shrubs was often comparable to, or shorter than, that of species with deciduous canopies (Ziziphus obtusifolia = 66 days; Diospyros texana = 119 days; Prosopis glandulosa = 207 days). Augmentation of surface soil moisture had no detectable effect on median leaf life span in any species and there was no clear relationship between leaf longevity and species growth responses to irrigation. Contrary to expectations, species with evergreen canopies responded to irrigation by producing more leaf biomass, longer shoots and more leaf cohorts/year than did deciduous species.Species differences in the annual cycle of leaf initiation, leaf longevity and canopy development, combined with contrasts in root distributions and a highly variable climate, may allow for spatial and temporal partitioning of resources and hence, woody species coexistence and diversity in this system. However, the lack of expected relationships between leaf longevity, leaf habit and plant responses to resource enhancement suggests that structure-function relationships and functional groupings developed in strongly seasonal environments cannot be applied with confidence to these subtropical savannas and thorn woodlands.  相似文献

Using dendrochronological techniques, this study examined whether tree-ring width of two evergreen broad-leaved species (Cleyera japonica, Eurya japonica) at their inland northern distribution limit in central Japan is more limited by low temperature compared with two co-dominating deciduous broad-leaved species (Fagus japonica, Magnolia hypoleuca) and two evergreen conifer species (Chamaecyparis obtusa, Abies firma), whose distribution limits are further north. The two deciduous broad-leaved species and the two evergreen conifers are tall tree species. Evergreen broad-leaved Cleyera japonica is a sub-canopy species and Eurya japonica is a small tree species. The tree-ring widths of four of the six species (except for Eurya japonica and Magnolia hypoleuca) correlated positively with the March temperature just before the start of the growth period. For deciduous broad-leaved Magnolia hypoleuca, the tree-ring width was correlated positively and negatively with July temperature and precipitation, respectively. However, the other deciduous broad-leaved Fagus japonica showed no such relationships. For the evergreen broad-leaved Cleyera japonica and evergreen conifers Chamaecyparis obtusa and Abies firma, tree-ring widths correlated positively with winter temperatures, probably because evergreen species can assimilate during warm winters. The tree-ring width of Cleyera japonica also correlated positively with temperatures of many months of the growth period. By contrast, the tree-ring width of the other evergreen broad-leaved Eurya japonica showed no positive correlation with the temperature in any month. Most Eurya japonica trees were suppressed by tall trees, which might disguise any climate effect. Thus, there were species differences in response to climate for each life form, and the tree-ring width of Cleyera japonica at the northern distribution limit was more limited by low temperatures compared with co-dominating species. It is suggested that growth of Cleyera japonica is increased by global warming at the latitudinal ecotone.  相似文献

1. The growth rate hypothesis predicts positive relationships among growth rate (μ), body RNA (%RNA of dry mass) and body P (%P of dry mass) contents. 2. We tested this within‐ and across‐species by growing five species/clones of Daphnia (Daphnia magna, Daphnia pulex, Daphnia galeata and two isolates of Daphnia pulicaria) with different combinations of food quantity and stoichiometric food quality. 3. Within each species, positive correlations among μ, %RNA and %P were seen and across species there was a strong association between%RNA and %P, consistent with the growth rate hypothesis. However, coupling of growth to %RNA and to %P differed for different species. In particular, the %RNA–μ and %P–μ relationships had similar slopes but considerably different y‐intercepts (i.e.%P or %RNA at zero growth), with D. pulicaria and D. galeata having higher intercepts than D. magna and especially D. pulex. As a result of these displacements, the relative rankings of the species on the basis of %P and %RNA did not correspond to their rankings based on μ. 4. These findings suggest that within a narrow clade (e.g. the daphnids), interspecific differences in body P content may reflect not growth rate‐related RNA allocation but instead the amount of RNA required for support of maintenance processes.  相似文献

Holothuria arguinensis, Holothuria mammata and Holothuria forskali are three common sea cucumber species found in the NE Atlantic, traded in international markets and susceptible to capture. Allometric relationships reveal if the scaling relationships between biometric characters are proportional with growth, being a useful tool to understand species growth strategies. Allometric relationships of the three species were estimated and compared between them and with populations from different regions. These allometric relationships revealed that the three species have negative allometric growth. However, they have different growth strategies between them and reveal different regional intra-specific growth strategies when compared to other populations, suggesting ontogenetic adaptation as a consequence of external factors.

Information on the timing and dynamics of tree ring formation is essential to assess the seasonal behavior of secondary wood growth and its associated environmental influences. Araucaria angustifolia is a dominant species in highland pluvial ecosystems of southeastern South America. Previous investigations indicated that their growth rings are formed annually, but no information exists about the timing of growth ring formation and the environmental triggers influencing cambium activity. In this paper we examine inter- and intra-annual cambial activity in A. angustifolia, through anatomical and dendrochronological evidence at two study sites, and model the relationships between regional climate variation and intra-annual tree ring formation. The results confirm the annual growth ring formation in A. angustifolia and indicate that its growth season extends from October to April. Day length and temperature were the main environmental factors influencing the seasonal cambium activity. Our results evidence the dendrochronological potential of A. angustifolia for ecological and climatological studies in southeastern South America.  相似文献

Variation in the growth patterns of roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), pike, Esox lucius L., and chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L.) was examined along the upper Warta River, where human impact (mostly pollution) has influenced the longitudinal zonation on the fish assemblage. Significant differences were found in the exponent of weight-length relationships for roach and chub populations occupying different zones of the river, but no such variation was observed in pike. Moreover, pike growth was isometric, whereas roach and chub grew allometrically, with regression coefficients (slope) above 3. Although the length-at-age data were similar for each zone, the von Bertalanffy parameters (L inf, K and t 0) suggest that there may exist some inter-zone variation in the overall growth patterns of these species. All the species grew better in the zone where the index of relative abundance (relating dominance of a particular species to its maximum abundance in river system) achieved its highest value. The results suggest that a relative abundance index expressed in this way can be a good index of habitat quality.  相似文献

Questions: Are negative invasion–diversity relationships due to biotic resistance of the invaded plant community or to post‐invasion displacement of less competitive species? Do invasion–diversity relationships change with habitat type or resident traits? Location/species: Lowlands and uplands of western and southern Germany, Heracleum mantegazzianum; mountain range in central Germany, Lupinus polyphyllus; and coastal dunes of northwest Germany, Rosa rugosa. Methods: We tested the significance and estimated regression slopes of invasion–diversity relationships using generalized linear (mixed effects) models relating invader cover and habitat type to species richness in different plant groups, stratified based on size, life cycle and community association. Results: We found negative, positive and neutral relationships between invader cover and species richness. There were negative linear correlations of invader cover with small plant species throughout, but no negative linear correlation with tall species. Invasion–diversity relationships tended to be more negative in early‐successional habitats, such as dunes or abandoned grasslands, than in late‐successional habitats. Conclusions: Invasion diversity–relationships are complex; they vary among habitat types and among different groups of resident species. Negative invasion–diversity relationships are due to asymmetric competitive displacement of inferior species and not due to biotic resistance. Small species are displaced in early‐successional habitats, while there is little effect on persistence of tall species.  相似文献

Abstract

Impacts of highly invasive ants in new ecosystems are well documented, but many more ant species are establishing in new ranges for which there is little or no information. We studied the effects of the recently discovered Australian ant, Monomorium sydneyense Forel, on the ant community of Sulphur Point in Tauranga, New Zealand. At the community scale, the species composition in invaded areas was significantly different from that in areas free of M. sydneyense. However, no single ant species was significantly more or less abundant in the presence of M. sydneyense. Some resident ant species categorised in the same functional group as the invader appeared to be scarcer when sympatric with M. sydneyense, but the local abundances of these species were always spatially variable, so the effects were not statistically significant Patchy distribution of M. sydneyense, and other aspects of its behaviour, such as poor foraging abilities and a lack of unicoloniality (where there is little or no aggression between conspecific ants from spatially separate nests), appear to allow resident ant species to coexist with M. sydneyense at Sulphur Point.  相似文献

Invasive fish species impact aquatic ecosystems and modify native communities, often leading to a decline in local species. These ecological impacts include the transmission of pathogens, predation, competition as well as hybridization. Two invasive fish species, the common bleak Alburnus alburnus and the topmouth gudgeon Pseudorabora parva, have both been recently found co-occurring in several regions of southern Europe, such as the Italian Arno River. Nonetheless, the trophic relationships among invasive fish species, especially cyprinids, remain poorly understood, and no studies have reported the trophic interaction between these two species. This study compared length–weight relationship and used stomach content and stable isotope analysis of two co-occurring populations in the Arno River to characterize the growth and overlap of potential trophic niches. It also found similar allometric growth in both species, a wider generalist trophic niche for P. parva and a more specialized niche for A. alburnus. A considerable niche overlap was found, suggesting that feeding competition can occur if resources were to be limited. Moreover, the niche of P. parva was more likely to overlap with that of A. alburnus than vice versa, suggesting that P. parva can be considered as a potential over competitor. Nonetheless, the authors found in the overlapping populations no evidence of realized competition, probably avoided through a combination of fine-scale mechanisms. They also highlighted that these two invasive species can co-exist and share resources, at least in an open ecosystem like a river, thus potentially doubling up their trophic impact on local communities.  相似文献

Abstract. The interdependence of species richness and plant biomass has widely been accepted as a general biodiversity rule. However, there is no information about how relationships are established during colonization and how total biomass is distributed among plants. The main objective of this study was to determine the role of several factors which we have hypothetized as affecting biomass distribution among species in an early old‐field community. To test this hypothesis, we conducted an experiment in a deeply ploughed Agropyro‐Rumicion crispi community in the Basque Country (Spain). Light, water and soil nitrogen content were factorially manipulated resulting in eight experimental treatments. We also examined several site features, which could potentially influence final biomass distribution: seed bank composition, soil physico‐chemical heterogeneity and cover and density of the dominant plant species in the community. A partition hypothesis testing approach using Redundancy Analysis was conducted to determine the fraction of biomass distribution variability assigned to each treatment and site feature. The most important species, in terms of biomass, were Agropyron repens, Sinapis arvensis, Arrhenatherum bulbosum and Picris echioides. As a general conclusion, biomass distribution among species during early secondary succession primarily depends on light availability and nitrogen supply. Several soil variables, such as magnesium, calcium and clay contents, also explain a relevant fraction of the biomass distribution among plant species. On the contrary, we found no effect of seed bank composition on biomass distribution. Finally, the total species number and cover of dominant species such as Sinapis arvensis, may determine final biomass distribution.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships were estimated for the first time for seven species of gurnards (Triglidae) based on data collected over the past 27 years in the Adriatic Sea (northeast Mediterranean). Results show significantly different relationships between juveniles and adults (females and males combined) for Aspitrigla cuculus, Eutrigla gurnardus, Chelidonichthys lucerna and Lepidotrigla cavillone. Isometric growth of juveniles is indicated for four species, allometric growth of adults for all species.  相似文献

The abundance of a species is not constant across its geographical range; it has often been assumed to decrease from the centre of a species’ range toward its margins. The central assumption of this “favourable centre” model is tested for the first time with parasites, using different species of helminth parasites exploiting fish as definitive hosts. Data on prevalence (percentage of hosts that are infected) and abundance (mean no. parasites per host) were compiled for 8 helminth species occurring in 23 populations of yellow perch Perca flavescens, from continental North America. For each parasite species, correlations were computed between latitude and both local prevalence and abundance values. In addition, the relationships between the relative prevalence or abundance in one locality and the distance between that locality and the one where the maximum value was reported, were assessed separately for each species to determine whether abundance tends to decrease away from the presumed centre of the range, where it peaks. For both the cestode Proteocephalus pearsei and the acanthocephalan Leptorhynchoides thecatus, there was a positive relationship between prevalence or abundance and the latitude of the sampled population. There was also a significant negative relationship between relative prevalence and the distance from the locality showing the maximum value in P. pearsei, but no such pattern was observed for the other 7 parasite species. Since this single significant decrease in prevalence with increasing distance from the peak value may be confounded by a latitudinal gradient, it appears that the distribution of abundance in parasites of perch does not follow the favourable centre model. This means that the environmental variables affecting the density of parasites (host availability, abiotic conditions) do not show pronounced spatial autocorrelation, with nearby sites not necessarily providing more similar conditions for the growth of parasite populations than distant sites.  相似文献

1. Ontogenetic changes during the life cycle of aquatic insects are important not only in life‐history studies but also in evaluating food‐web structure. They require information on the growth and number of larval instars but such information is lacking for many species, including Plecoptera. Therefore, the chief objectives of the present study were to determine inter‐ and intra‐specific differences in the number of larval instars in British populations of 24 species of stoneflies, to test Dyar’s hypothesis that growth followed a geometric progression, and to synthesise this information with previously published values for four British species. 2. Larvae were reared at constant temperatures in the laboratory from eggs from 63 populations (one to six populations per species). First instars from each population were divided into three batches and each batch was reared at one of three constant temperatures. For each species, the rearing temperature and source population had no significant effect on the mean size of each larval instar. 3. The relationship between the geometric mean length of each instar and instar number was well described by an exponential equation (P < 0.001, r2 > 0.9 for all species), thus supporting Dyar’s hypothesis. Only one species, Brachyptera risi, had the same number of instars for males and females (12–13). For the other 15 herbivorous species and the four smaller carnivorous ones, the number of instars was higher for females than males (range 11–16 for males, 12–17 for females). The larger size of the females was due to their additional instars, not a sex difference in growth rates. In contrast, there was a clear growth separation of the sexes after the 9th or 10th instar for the four largest carnivores. The number of larval instars was highest for these four species (range 16–19 for males, 18–23 for females), and females were much larger than males. 4. A multiple regression equation with data from the present and previous studies (n = 27) showed that variability in the mean length of the first instar and the maximum number of larval instars for each species accounted for 88% and 91% of the variability in the mean length of the final instar for males and females, respectively. 5. Values for Plecoptera in other countries were in general agreement with those in the present study, especially in the same families. Two old, but widely quoted, high values are doubtful. The present study and four previous ones provide a sound basis for ontogenetic studies on 28 species of Plecoptera and their role in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

Abstract The long-term growth and coexistence of species with large mixed populations in varying environments were modelled for representative environments and life-history characteristics of annual and perennial plants. The effects of the relationships between the means, variances, and covariances of seed yield, establishment, and survival, were explored by Taylor's expansion. The main findings are: 1. Individual variation in reproductive success within generations has no effect on long-term growth, which is determined only by the mean growth rate of the individuals of the species. 2. In annual species with nonoverlapping generations and without seed banks, the species with the largest mean log of the annual growth rate Y, that is the product of the average seed yield per plant and the establishment probability per seed, will win in competition with other species, independent of the correlations between the growth rates of the different species. In this case there is a negative tradeoff between the mean and the variance. 3. In perennial species with a lottery type of equal access to vacant sites, a high annual survival probability allows stable coexistence between perennial species with independent or negatively correlated variance in their mean annual product of seed production and establishment Y. 4. The coexistence range and the likely number of coexisting perennial species increase as a function of the variance of the common species, and is decreased by the variance of the rare species. The coexistence range is decreased by the covariance between the growth rates of the species, and between the survival of the rare species and its growth rate. 5. If mortality in the community of long-lived perennials is synchronized, the generations become nonoverlapping, and the competitive dynamics become similar to that of annuals. 6. Coexistence between annual and perennial species is promoted if the covariances between the annual survival and the relative yield of perennials, and between the yields of perennials and annuals, decrease and become more negative. 7. Selection for seed yield and establishment in different conditions in annuals favours a generalist strategy with low variance between years which provides a moderate yield and establishment over a wide range of environmental conditions. In perennial plants, long-term growth rate is determined by the lifetime seed yield and establishment. Because of strong competition with annuals in the more common conditions, selection in perennials favours instead a specialist strategy, with a high seed yield and establishment at relatively rare occasions in space and time, in which there is only weak competition with annuals. 8. Coexistence of annual species with a long-lived seed bank in the soil is also made possible by independent variation in different years of the germination, seed yield and establishment of different species, analogous to the situation of perennial plants.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships of 41 fish species (20 families) collected from the Korangi‐Phitti Creek area on the northern side of the Indus delta at the northern Arabian Sea are presented. This study provides first reports of length–weight relationships for seven species (Sardinella brachysoma, Arius arius, Trachinotus mookalee, Nuchequula blochii, Gerres limbatus, Brachirus orientalis, and Synaptura commersonnii). The coefficients of determination (r2) were > 0.90 for 35 species. Estimates of b ranged from a minimum 2.204 for Liza carinata to a maximum of 3.535 for Pseudorhombus arsius; 16 species showed isometric growth (b = 3), eight species showed positive allometric growth (b > 3), while 17 species showed negative allometric growth (b < 3).  相似文献
