The effect of dietary astaxanthin supplementation on reproductive characteristics was investigated in five groups of female rainbow trout broodstock fed diets containing either 0.07, 12.46, 33.33, 65.06 or 92.91 mg astaxanthin kg?1, respectively, and two groups of male rainbow trout broodstock fed diets supplemented with 0.07 and 33.33 mg astaxanthin kg?1, respectively, for 6 months in an artificial photoperiod system until sexual maturation. The eggs from each group of female broodstock were divided into two equal batches. One batch was fertilized with homogenized sperm of four males fed diets with 0.07 mg astaxanthin kg?1 and the other portion with sperm of four males fed diets with 33.3 mg astaxanthin kg?1. The females produced eggs with astaxanthin concentrations ranging from 2.03 to 29.79 mg kg?1. Dietary astaxanthin supplementation had positive effects on investigated reproductive traits. Significant differences in rate of fertilization, percentage of eyed and hatched eggs, and mortality of eyed eggs were found between treatments (P < 0.05), but no significant difference was found on percentage of mortality before hatching (P > 0.05). A significant difference (P < 0.05) in fertilization rate was found for male groups fed 0.07 and 33.3 mg astaxanthin kg?1. The astaxanthin content in the eggs and fertilization rate, eyed‐egg percentage and percentage hatch were significantly correlated (P < 0.05). It is concluded that dietary supplements of astaxanthin are required for optimum reproduction in rainbow trout.  相似文献

Growth performance, mortality and carotenoid pigmentation were studied in triplicate groups each with 1000 swim-up larvae of rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ), derived from five groups of female broodstock fed diets with 0.07, 12.5, 33.3, 65.1 or 92.9 mg astaxanthin kg−1, respectively. The first feeding fry (initial weight range from 113 to 148 mg) were fed a diet not supplemented with carotenoids in an experiment lasting 45 days. Fry were initially sampled for astaxanthin content and initial weight, and in subsequent 15-day intervals to determine weights, condition factors (CF), specific growth rates (SGR) and thermal growth coefficients (TGC). Total carotenoid concentration of the larvae was highly linearly correlated to that of the eggs ( r 2 = 0.97, P = 0.002). About 59–67% of fry carotenoids consisted of esterified astaxanthin, and on average 39.7% of the egg carotenoids were recovered in the fry. Overall (0–45 days) SGRs and TGCs were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the offspring of the four groups of females fed supplemented diets (12.5–92.9 mg astaxanthin kg−1) than in offspring of females fed the non-supplemented diet. TGCs (0–45 days) within groups derived from broodstock supplemented with astaxanthin were similar (P > 0.05), but higher than in the group derived from females fed the diet not supplemented with astaxanthin (P < 0.05). Mortality (average 0.76%) was not significantly affected by treatment. The study indicates that dietary supplement of astaxanthin (>12.5 mg kg−1) to maternal broodstock diets improves offspring SGR and TGC with up to 33 and 38%, respectively.  相似文献

Wild-collected adults of Bombina orientalis are bright green dorsally and red to red-orange ventrally. As a prelude to an analysis of the differentiation of pigment cells in developing B. orientalis, we describe structural and chemical aspects of the fully differentiated pigment pattern of the “normal” adult. Structurally, differences between dorsal green and ventral red skin are summarized as follows: (1) Dorsal green skin contains a “typical” dermal chromatophore unit comprised of melanophores, iridophores, and xanthophores. Red skin contains predominantly carotenoid-containing xanthophores (erythrophores), and skin from black spot areas contains only melanophores. (2) In ventral red skin, there is also a thin layer of deep-lying iridophores that presumably are not involved in the observed color pattern. (3) Xanthophores of red and green skin are morphologically distinguishable from each other. Dorsal skin xanthophores contain both pterinosomes and carotenoid vesicles; ventral skin xanthophores contain only carotenoid vesicles. Carotenoid vesicles in dorsal xanthophores are much larger but less electron dense than comparable structures in ventral xanthophores. The presence of carotenes in ventral skin accounts for the bright red-orange color of the belly of this frog. Similar pigments are also present in green skin, but in smaller quantities and in conjunction with both colored (yellow) and colorless pteridines. From spectral data obtained for xanthophore pigments and structural data obtained from the size and arrangement of reflecting platelets in the iridophore layer, we attempt to explain the phenomenon of observed green color in B. orientalis.  相似文献

Semi‐synthetic or fully artificial diets are well established in culturing laboratory insects on a large scale. In Pieris brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), a published semi‐synthetic diet supplemented with sinigrin, a chemical label of cruciferous plants, is well accepted by the larvae but the adults fail to produce offspring; continuous breeding, therefore, requires the addition of cabbage powder to the diet. We set out to identify essential substances to eliminate the need for cabbage in our long‐term mass culture. The studies revealed that the dietary difference, which becomes most evident at the adult stage only, is because of a severe lack of carotenoids in the cabbage‐free version. This was uncovered in larvae, fed cabbage‐supplemented diet, that respond to blue light of sufficient intensity by high cuticle melanization on pupation; larvae fed the carotenoid‐deficient sinigrin‐supplemented diet fail to respond in this way. Males were found to be more sensitive than females to blue light in this respect. The essential substance mediating this photo response was found to be lutein and/or zeaxanthin, two abundant xanthophylls of green leaves. β‐Carotene was only marginally active. These xanthophylls are known to serve as precursors to the synthesis of 3‐hydroxyretinal, the exclusive visual chromophore of lepidopteran insects; retinal, derived from β‐carotene, is not (substantially) used by these insects. In conclusion, the absence of flying and mating activity in the adults from the sinigrin diet may indicate visual deficiency owing to a lack of a specific structural class of carotenoids in the larval food. Our results enabled us to formulate a semi‐synthetic diet that allows continuous mass rearing of P. brassicae without cabbage at any stage including oviposition. In addition to the key constituents sinigrin and xanthophylls, this superior diet includes tryptophan, as methyl ester, and α‐tocopherol.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effect of hydrothermic maize processing and supplementation of amino acids (AA) in two experiments. In total, 60 barrows and 384 broilers were fed four diets including either unprocessed (T1), or hydrothermically processed maize, that is short- (T2), or long-term conditioned (LC) (T3), and subsequently expanded maize of the same batch. Assuming a higher metabolizable energy (ME) content after processing, the fourth diet (T4) contains maize processed as treatment T3, but AA were supplemented to maintain the ideal protein value. Performance, digestibility and product quality in both species were assessed. Results show that in pigs receiving T4 the average daily feed intake was lower compared with the other treatments, whereas no difference was observed in broilers. The T3 improved the feed conversion rate compared with T1 (P<0.10) for both species. In contrast, average daily gain (ADG) (1277 g/day for T2 and 1267 g/day for T3 v. 971 g/day for T1) was only altered in pigs. The hydrothermic maize processing increased the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of dry matter, starch and ether extract after acid hydrolysis. This may be a consequence of higher ATTD of gross energy in the finishing phase for both animal species, suggesting a higher ME content in diets with processed maize. The higher ME content of diets with processed maize is supported also by measurements of product quality. Supplementation of AA in T4 enhanced the loin depth in pigs as well as the amount of breast meat in broilers. Further effects of processing maize on meat quality were the reduced yellowness and antioxidative capacity (P<0.10) for broilers, likely due to the heat damage of xanthophylls and tocopherols. Processing also increased springiness and chewiness (P<0.10) of the broilers breast meat, whereas the loin meat of pigs showed a decreased lightness and yellowness (P<0.10) in meat when hydrothermic processed maize was used (for T2, T3 and T4). LC processed maize (T3) showed the lowest springiness in pork, however the supplementation of AA in T4 did not show differences between the treatments. Shown results demonstrated positive effects of hydrothermic processing of maize on animal performance and digestibility in both species. However, effects on carcass characteristics and product quality differed. The negative effects on product quality could be partly compensated with the AA supplementation, whereas a change in meat colour and reduced antioxidative capacity was observed in all groups fed hydrothermic maize processing.  相似文献

Natural carotenoids from astaxanthin containing alga Haematococcus pluvialis (H) and a non-astaxanthin carotenoid-containing alga Spirulina pacifica (S), and a synthetic astaxanthin Carophyll Pink (A) were supplemented in formulated diets at two concentrations, 50 (I) and 100 (II) mg kg−1, resulting in seven pigmented diets HI, SI, AI, HII, SII, AII, and HS (H-50 mg kg−1+S-50 mg kg−1). Formulated diet without carotenoid supplementation served as a control (C). The different diets were fed to juvenile kuruma prawn Marsupenaeus japonicus for 9 weeks. Dietary carotenoid effects on survival, growth, and pigmentation were compared by the treatment individually or collectively. A low dissolved oxygen stress test was conducted 2 weeks later and prawns' survival time and oxygen consumption rate were also compared among treatments. After 9 weeks' rearing, C-fed prawn had significantly lower survival rate than the pigmented diets-fed prawns. No difference in weight gain was found among all prawns. C-fed prawn had 66.4% less flesh astaxanthin (FA) and 75.5% less shell astaxanthin (SA) than the pigmented diets-fed prawns. I-fed (AI, HI, and SI) prawns had 31.1% less FA and 29.6% less SA than II-fed (AII, HII, SII, and HS) prawns. No significant differences were found in the comparisons by other categories. The use of these three sources of carotenoids for pigmentation in crustacean was discussed along carotenoid conversion, deposition, digestibility, and absorption. When subjected to low dissolved oxygen stress, C-fed prawn had higher oxygen consumption rate (OCR) and shorter survival time (ST) than the prawns fed the pigmented diets. No differences in OCR or ST were found in the comparisons by other categories.  相似文献

以不同维生素K水平(0.13、2.15、3.25、6.40、12、17.20和23.20 mg/kg饲料)的7种精制饲料喂养初始体重约为(2.17±0.01) g的异育银鲫(Carassius auratus gibelio)10周, 每个处理3个重复, 研究异育银鲫对维生素K的需求量。结果显示: 饲料中维生素K的添加可以明显降低摄食率, 饲料中维生素K含量为2.15 mg/kg时, 摄食率出现最大值, 之后显著下降(P<0.05), 在12 mg/kg时达到最低值。特定生长率随着维生素K的添加表现出升高的趋势, 饲料中维生素K含量为12 mg/kg时, 出现最大值, 但是差异不显著(P>0.05)。饲料中维生素K的含量从0.13 mg/kg升至3.25 mg/kg时, 饲料效率显著升高(P<0.05), 随着饲料中维生素K的进一步添加, 趋于稳定(P>0.05), 在12 mg/kg时达到最大值, 并且与特定生长率呈正相关关系(SGR=0.01 FE+0.95, R2=0.95)。血液红细胞数目随着饲料维生素K含量的增加先显著升高(P<0.05), 在6.40 mg/kg时达到最大值, 之后趋于稳定(P>0.05)。血红蛋白含量、血球容积比、血清钙含量与血液中红细胞数目表现出相似的趋势, 均在不添加维生素K组出现最低值, 但是差异不显著(P>0.05)。肝体比、肥满度及鱼体生化组成均不受饲料维生素K水平的影响(P>0.05)。分别对饲料效率、红细胞数目进行折线回归得出异育银鲫幼鱼对维生素K的最适需求量为3.73—6.72 mg/kg饲料。  相似文献

Adult goats (no. = 18) were supplemented with chromium (Cr, 0.5 mg/kg concentrate) for 120 days as Cr chloride and Cr yeast complex and their responses in terms of glucose tolerance and serum profiles of metabolites and hormones were measured. The goats were fed 200 g/day of the concentrate and reared under a semi-intensive regimen. Cr supplementation significantly reduced serum glucose ( P = 0.049) and cholesterol ( P = 0.0001) levels compared with the same in the control group (calculated as % change between days 0 and 120). Serum cortisol on day 120 was lower in goats fed Cr chloride than in the control group ( P < 0.05). Overall, the mean cortisol level was lower ( P = 0.001) in the goats receiving added dietary Cr. An intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) was performed on the goats on day 75. The clearance rate (k) of glucose between 5 and 60 min of glucose infusion was significantly higher ( P = 0.004) in the goats supplemented with Cr yeast compared with those on the control or the Cr chloride supplemented diets. The kinetic parameters as well as the k and T1/2 responses for serum insulin during the IVGTT were not affected. The ratio between the insulin k to glucose k increased ( P = 0.011) in the goats fed added dietary Cr as Cr chloride compared with the control and the Cr yeast groups. Post-prandial serum levels of glucose (diet effect P = 0.038) and cholesterol (diet effect P = 0.033) was lower in both the Cr supplemented groups than the control. Serum glucose during an epinephrine challenge test tended to remain elevated ( P = 0.076) 2 h after epinephrine infusion in the Cr yeast group indicating a delayed return of serum glucose to the basal level. However, serum insulin and cortisol remained unaffected. Several changes in selected blood metabolites and hormone measurements were observed when Cr was added as a dietary supplement in the diet of the goats. Contrary to the generally accepted view, supplemental Cr may influence the metabolism of ruminants even in a non-stressed management regime.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of dietary carotenoid availability on carotenoid and retinoid concentrations in the flesh, plasma, skin and eggs of female Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha. Carotenoid concentrations in all tissues were closely related to dietary availability. Early in the breeding season, carotenoids were stored primarily in the muscle, with a flesh carotenoid concentration of 9·9 µg g?1 in fish fed a high carotenoid diet compared with 1·9 µg g?1 in fish fed a low carotenoid diet. During the breeding season, carotenoid reserves were mobilized predominantly to the eggs and also to the skin. By the end of the breeding season, carotenoid concentrations in the eggs were 17·9 µg g?1 in fish fed a high carotenoid diet and 3·9 µg g?1 in fish fed a low carotenoid diet. Conversely, egg retinoid concentrations were only c. 20% lower in fish fed a low v. high carotenoid diet, which suggests that retinoid concentrations were not limited by the availability of carotenoid precursors. Egg carotenoid concentrations were not correlated with either skin carotenoid concentration or colouration, which suggests that female carotenoid displays are not a reliable signal that males can use to evaluate egg carotenoid resources.  相似文献

Carotenoid‐based coloration in adult birds has been often regarded as an honest signal of individual quality. However, few studies have demonstrated a link between carotenoid display and the quantity or quality of resources provided to the offspring. The present study investigated the expression of a carotenoid‐based ornament, the breast plumage yellowness of the blue tit Cyanistes caeruleus, in relation to the level of parental provisioning effort and the amount of carotenoid‐rich prey provided to the young. The study was conducted in two forest types (evergreen and deciduous), which also allowed an exploration of the possible existence of habitat effects on the coloration of breeding birds. It was found that plumage colour intensity (carotenoid chroma) correlated positively with nestling provisioning rates of both males and females, supporting the good parent hypothesis. In addition, carotenoid chroma was positively related with the proportion of Lepidoptera larvae brought to the nest in both sexes. Female but not male coloration was positively linked to breeding success (proportion of fledged young). Nestling coloration did not correlate with that of their parents, nor the frequency with which they were fed. Hue and lightness of nestling's plumage correlated positively with body mass and tarsus length, respectively. The results obtained in the present study indicate that ventral plumage coloration in blue tits may advertise the ingested carotenoids (carotenoid foraging ability) and also their overall parental quality in terms of nestling provisioning rates. The effects of orally administered carotenoids from natural sources on the non-specific defense mechanisms of rainbow trout were evaluated in a nine-week feeding trial. Fish were fed four diets containing either beta-carotene or astaxanthin at 100 and 200 mg kg-1 from the marine algae Dunaliella salina and red yeast Phaffia rhodozyma, respectively, and a control diet containing no supplemented carotenoids. Specific growth rate and feed:gain ratio were not affected by dietary carotenoid supplementation. Among the humoral factors, serum alternative complement activity increased significantly in all carotenoid supplemented groups when compared to the control. On the other hand, serum lysozyme activity increased in the Dunaliella group but not in the Phaffia group, whereas plasma total immunoglobulin levels were not altered by the feeding treatments. As for the cellular responses, the superoxide anion production from the head kidney remained unchanged while the phagocytic rate and index in all supplemented groups were significantly higher than those of the control. These findings demonstrate that dietary carotenoids from both D. salina and P. rhodozyma can modulate some of the innate defense mechanisms in rainbow trout.  相似文献

Penaeus japonicus postlarvae, reared under laboratory conditions, were fed an astaxanthin enriched diet to the investigate carotenoid metabolic capabilities during the postlarval development. Animals fed astaxanthin were found to absorb this carotenoid. The decrease of pigment concentration in the carotenoid starved group is related to the duration of the experimental feeding conditions; the carotenoid depletion depends upon the postlarval status at the starting point. As has been shown for adult prawns, the carotenoid pattern of postlarval stages, regardless of the diet, consists mainly of free and esterified astaxanthin; the relative amounts of these fractions undergo slight variations depending on the diet.  相似文献

An eight‐week feeding trial was conducted to determine the dietary histidine requirement of Indian catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis (6.20 ± 1.25 cm, 4.65 ± 0.48 g) in 75‐L flow‐through circular troughs. Six isonitrogenous (40%) and isoenergetic (17.90 kJ g?1) amino acid test diets with graded levels of l ‐histidine (0.25 – 0.75%, dry diet), in gradation of 0.10% histidine were formulated. Fish were randomly stocked in triplicate groups and fed experimental diets at 4% BW per day at 08:00 and 18:00 h. Maximum live weight gain (288%), best FCR (1.40) and PER (1.78) were occurred at 0.55% dietary histidine level. For the live weight gain, FCR, PER and body protein deposition data were examined using quadratic regression analysis, the breakpoints indicating requirements for histidine at 0.58, 0.54, 0.53 and 0.54% of dry diet, respectively. Significantly (P < 0.05) low moisture and higher whole body protein content were obtained in the 0.55% histidine diet, while body fat showed an increasing trend with the increase in dietary concentrations. Ash content remained insignificantly (P > 0.05) low among all dietary groups, except in diet I and diet II. Based on the above results, the recommended diet for young H. fossilis should contain histidine at 0.54% of dry diet, corresponding to 1.35% of dietary protein for optimum growth and efficient feed utilization.  相似文献

We assessed the effects of dietary carotenoid pigment supplementation on liver histochemistry in the rainbow trout. One hundred and eight rainbow trout (mean mass 266 ± 10 g) were assigned to each of three replicate tanks for each of three dietary treatments; astaxanthin, canthaxanthin, or control at a target dietary inclusion of 100 mg/kg, by top-coating a pigment-free commercially extruded basal diet (Trouw Aquaculture, U.K.). Fish were fed for 3 weeks at a ration of 1.2% body mass/day, in a recirculating freshwater system maintained at 16 °C. Frozen liver sections were stained for total lipids, unsaturated lipids, glycogen, mucopolysaccharides, glycogen phosphorylase and aspartate aminotransferase. Relative amounts were measured quantitatively by image analysis. Carotenoid treatment significantly (P < 0.05) altered the total lipid profile and hepatic mucopolysaccharide contents of livers of rainbow trout. Results are discussed in relation to the catabolic potential of the liver in carotenoid pigment metabolism.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of elevated dietary levels of vitamin E (α‐tocopherol) on growth performance, proximate composition and fatty acid profiles of juvenile silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus. Three semi‐purified experimental diets were formulated to contain 49% protein and 16% lipid. High docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) tuna oil was added to the diets to supplement DHA. A graded level of vitamin E (0‐, 50‐, and 100 mg kg?1) was added to experimental diets 1 to 3, respectively. Analyzed vit. E levels were 155.2, 195.3 and 236.4 mg kg?1 in diets 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The experiment was conducted for 12 weeks with juvenile silver pomfret (29.6 ± 7.6 g) using a flow‐through system consisting of nine 1‐m3 tanks. Each treatment had three replicates and fish were stocked at the rate of 20 m?3. Growth performance and feed utilization parameters of fish fed diets 2 and 3 were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than in fish fed diet 1, but the parameters in diets 2 and 3 did not differ significantly (P > 0.05). Although whole body protein levels were not influenced by the dietary vit. E levels, whole body lipid in fish fed diet 2 was significantly higher than in fish fed the other diets. The whole body vit. E levels in fish fed diet 2 (22.6 mg kg?1) and diet 3 (24.1 mg kg?1) were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than in those fed diet 1 (18.2 mg kg?1). Whole body total saturated fatty acids were significantly lower, and DHA levels higher in fish fed diets 2 and 3 than those fed diet 1. The results of the present study suggest that increasing dietary supplementation of vit. E in high lipid diets enhances the growth performance of fish and that a dietary level of 196 mg kg?1 vit. E is suitable for the growth of silver pomfret.  相似文献

We performed QTL analyses for pigment content on a carotenoid biosynthesis function map based on progeny of a wild white carrot (QAL) which accumulates no pigments × domesticated orange carrot (B493), one of the richest sources of carotenoid pigments—mainly provitamin A α- and β- carotenes. Two major interacting loci, Y and Y 2 on linkage groups 2 and 5, respectively, control much variation for carotenoid accumulation in carrot roots. They are associated with carotenoid biosynthetic genes zeaxanthin epoxidase and carotene hydroxylase and carotenoid dioxygenase gene family members as positional candidate genes. Dominant Y allele inhibits carotenoid accumulation. When Y is homozygous recessive, carotenoids that accumulate are either only xanthophylls in Y 2 __ plants, or both carotenes and xanthophylls, in y 2 y 2 plants. These two genes played a major role in carrot domestication and account for the significant role that modern carrot plays in vitamin A nutrition.  相似文献

A 9‐week experiment was designed to study the effects of partial replacement of monocalcium phosphate (MCP) with neutral phytase on growth, body compositions, serum biochemical statuses and intestinal digestive enzyme activities of grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idellus. The control diet (designated as P2.0) was prepared with 2.0% MCP but without phytase. The three other diets (designated as PP1.5, PP1.0 and PP0.5, respectively) were supplemented with 1.5, 1.0 and 0.5% MCP, respectively, along with 500 FTU of neutral phytase kg?1 diet in each. After a 9‐week feeding trial, fish (initial body weight: 43.44 ± 2.37 g) fed with PP1.5 and PP1.0 had no significant change in weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency rate (PER) or feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared with the control (P > 0.05) whereas fish fed with PP0.5 showed significantly lower growth performance in the above parameters. The crude lipid content in whole body or muscle of the fish fed with PP1.5 was significantly lower than the control while significantly higher in fish fed with PP0.5 (P < 0.05), whereas no obvious change was observed in the fish fed with PP1.0. For serum indices, higher serum alkaline phosphatase (Alkp), phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) contents were observed in fish fed with phytase‐supplemented diets in comparison with the control. In addition, dietary phytase supplementation increased amylase activity and decreased lipase activity in both foregut and hindgut. The present study suggests that dietary MCP can be reduced when neutral phytase is added to the grass carp diet, and that the maximum MCP reduction level can be up to 1% when neutral phytase is supplemented at 500 FTU kg?1 diet.  相似文献

It is suggested that gonad color in sea urchins depends upon the in vivo accumulation and metabolism of red and yellow carotenoid pigments. We hypothesized that differential light exposure could affect carotenoid deposition and, hence, gonad color in sea urchins. We therefore performed two experiments to determine whether light spectra affect the gonad color of Lytechinus variegatus. In the first experiment, urchins were fed a formulated feed supplemented with or without β-carotene and held beneath three lighting regimes designed to emit differing wavelengths of the visible spectrum. After 12 weeks, urchins were dissected and gonad color (CIE L*a*b*) was measured with a Pantone Capsure RM200. Actinic light significantly increased the value of a* (red) in gonad color. Color in the orange and yellow spectra in the gonads increased in individuals fed the β-carotene supplemented diet. In the second experiment, we cultured urchins for nine weeks under lamps specialized to emit UV radiation. All urchins in this experiment received diets supplemented with β-carotene. There was no significant difference in harvested gonad color between these treatments. Dietary nucleotides have been shown to benefit many physiological and nutritional functions in higher vertebrates and fish. Therefore, a 6-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of graded levels of a commercial nucleotide product on growth performance, immune responses and intestinal morphology of juvenile red drum (initial average weight of 7.1 g). The basal diet was formulated to contain 40% protein, 10% lipid and a digestible energy level of 3.5 kcal g?1. Two levels of nucleotide (Ascogen P®, 0.5% and 1% of diet) were added to the basal diet with menhaden fishmeal and menhaden oil adjusted to provide isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets. Nucleotide supplementation tended to improve weight gain and survival of red drum, but not at a significant level. Neutrophil oxidative radical anion production and serum lysozyme activity tended to be higher for fish fed diets supplemented with nucleotide, while extracellular superoxide anion production of head kidney macrophages from fish fed diets with 1% nucleotide was significantly (P < 0.05) increased, although no significant differences were observed between fish fed 0.5% nucleotide diet and the basal diet.Nucleotide supplementation significantly (P < 0.05) increased fold height in the proximal intestine, and enterocyte height in the pyloric caeca, proximal and distal enteric sections. A significantly (P < 0.05) higher microvilli height was observed in all evaluated enteric sections of fish fed with diets supplemented with nucleotides. It is therefore possible to use dietary nucleotides supplementation to significantly enhance the intestinal structure of red drum. Likewise, nucleotides in the diet may improve some components of the non-specific immune response of this sciaenid fish.  相似文献

Numerous researchers have examined the effects of skin condition, including texture and color, on the perception of health, age, and attractiveness in human faces. They have focused on facial color distribution, homogeneity of pigmentation, or skin quality. We here investigate the role of overall skin color in determining perceptions of health from faces by allowing participants to manipulate the skin portions of color-calibrated Caucasian face photographs along CIELab color axes. To enhance healthy appearance, participants increased skin redness (a*), providing additional support for previous findings that skin blood color enhances the healthy appearance of faces. Participants also increased skin yellowness (b*) and lightness (L*), suggesting a role for high carotenoid and low melanin coloration in the healthy appearance of faces. The color preferences described here resemble the red and yellow color cues to health displayed by many species of nonhuman animals.  相似文献
