The seasonal variation in natural mortality of phytophagous insects is determined by the relative importance of biotic and abiotic factors in agroecosystems. Knowledge regarding these factors throughout the year represents a key concern for IPM programmes. Seasonal population fluctuations of tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta, led to an investigation of its natural mortality factors during the rainy season when the population level is low and during the dry season when population peaks occur. The aim of this study was to verify the seasonal variation in T. absoluta mortality factors in tomato crops. Immature stages of T. absoluta were obtained from laboratory‐rearing in the laboratory. These were taken to the field and monitored over two years. The mortality causes for each stage of insect development from egg to adult were assessed daily. Multiple biotic and abiotic mortality factors affected the immature T. absoluta stages such as rainfall, physiological disturbances, diseases, parasitoids and predators. The key T. absoluta mortality factor during summer–spring was predation. In addition, larvae predation correlated positively with temperature, wind velocity, photoperiod and rainfall. Nevertheless, during winter–fall, the key mortality factor was parasitism. Therefore, the critical stage for mortality was 3rd‐ and 4th‐instar larvae, being more vulnerable to natural control factors. Finally, the results showed the importance of vertical and horizontal action on natural mortality factors.  相似文献

We analysed the ratios Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca in the otoliths of 55 adults of the southern population of Mugil liza in Brazil (Paraná to Rio Grande do Sul) to investigate its coastal zone use and migratory behaviour. All individual M. liza analysed had Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca values indicating that their birth was in the marine environment, which is consistent with the southern population migration to spawn in the ocean,. Juveniles exhibited at least three coastal use and recruitment strategies (contingents): the majority (89%) of M. liza juveniles migrated toward brackish water. They entered the estuary before completing the first year of life (64%) or after (25%) their first year of life. The remaining 11% did not appear to enter brackish or freshwater water as a nursery or at any point in their life cycle. Some adults returned to the estuary after spawning in the ocean but others (of both sexes) never returned to the estuary after spawning, remaining in the marine environment. The pattern of juvenile habitat use in the Brazilian southern population of M. liza seems to be recurrent throughout the extent of its distribution as a consequence of the reproductive spawning aggregation behaviour, which mixes all contingents (with marine or estuarine preferences).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze morphologic and morphometric changes of sagittae otoliths throughout the growth of three mullets: Mugil liza, Mugil cephalus and Liza ramada. Fish were collected seasonally between October 2011 and April 2014, and three methods were used: regression analysis of traditional biometric characters; morphological analysis for group identification; and morphometrical analysis of shape indices among groups (circularity, rectangularity, aspect ratio and percentage occupied by the sulcus). In all species, dependence of standard length on otolith length and height were best described as power functions. Two morphological groups were identified for M. liza and M. cephalus, while three for L. ramada. Morphological changes were supported by morphometry differences only for the first two species. Smaller size specimens of M. liza had more rectangular otoliths with more percentage covered by the sulcus while bigger fish tended to have a more circular shape. For M. cephalus smaller size fish had a more elliptical shape. The observed changes may be reflecting life history changes, related to habitat or dietary shifting.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to explore the relationship between population density of Akodon azarae (Muridae: Sigmodontinae) and climatic and environmental variables, and determine which of them are associated to within and among‐year changes in rodent abundance in agro‐ecosystems from south Córdoba, Argentina. The study was carried out in a rural area of central Argentina, from 1983 to 2003. Density was estimated as a relative density index (RDI). Temperature, precipitation and humidity were obtained from records of the National University of Rio Cuarto. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Surface Temperature were recorded from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (1983–1998) and Landsat (1998–2003) imagery data sets. We performed simple correlations, multiple regressions and distributed lag analysis. Direct association of climatic and environmental variables with RDI was in general, low. The amount of variability in seasonal changes in density explained by climatic and environmental variables altogether varied from 10% to 70%. Seasonal population fluctuations were influenced by NDVI and rainfall with one and two seasons of delay. Autumn maximum density of the species was also associated with vegetation and rainfall of previous seasons. There also seemed to be an indirect influence of rainfall through vegetation given that we found a positive correlation between them. Results were consistent with basic aspects of the ecology of the species, such as its strong preference for highly covered areas, which provide food and protection from predators, likely increasing its reproductive success. Therefore, in the rural area central Argentina, A. azarae showed seasonal fluctuations with delayed influence of rainfall and vegetation and indirect effects of rainfall.  相似文献

The concentrations of mannitol and floridean starch were determined in a 1–year field study of the epiphytic red alga Caloglossa leprieurii (Montagne) J. Agardh from warm temperate waters of eastern Australia. Seasonal environmental data for air and water temperature, day length and rainfall were recorded. The mannitol content and the floridean starch content varied significantly between collections but no seasonal responses were observed, nor were the contents correlated with any of the abiotic factors. A possible function of the starch pool as a supply for respiratory substrates under emergent conditions is discussed. All data indicate that productivity and biomass of C. leprieurii are affected by short-term abiotic and/or biotic conditions rather than controlled directly by seasonally fluctuating environmental factors. In addition, the activity of three highly specific enzymes (mannitol-1–phosphate dehydroge-nase, mannitol-1–phosphatase, mannitol-dehydroge-nase) and one non-specific enzyme (hexokinase), all of which are involved in the mannitol cycle, were measured in cell-free extracts every 2 weeks. All enzymes showed marked changes in activity over the year, but again no clear patterns emerged, neither with season nor in relationship to one another. On the basis of the results here, C. leprieurii is considered to be a 'season responded rather than a ‘season anticipator’.  相似文献

Low spring temperatures have been found to benefit mobile herbivores by reducing the rate of spring‐flush, whereas high rainfall increases forage availability. Cold winters prove detrimental, by increasing herbivore thermoregulatory burdens. Here we examine the effects of temperature and rainfall variability on a temperate sedentary herbivore, the Eurasian beaver, Castor fiber, in terms of inter‐annual variation in mean body weight and per territory offspring production. Data pertain to 198 individuals, over 11 years, using capture‐mark‐recapture. We use plant growth (tree cores) and fAPAR (a satellite‐derived plant productivity index) to examine potential mechanisms through which weather conditions affect the availability and the seasonal phenology of beaver forage. Juvenile body weights were lighter after colder winters, whereas warmer spring temperatures were associated with lighter adult body weights, mediated by enhanced green‐up phenology rates. Counter‐intuitively, we observed a negative association between rainfall and body weight in juveniles and adults, and also with reproductive success. Alder, Alnus incana, (n = 68) growth rings (principal beaver food in the study area) exhibited a positive relationship with rainfall for trees growing at elevations >2 m above water level, but a negative relationship for trees growing <0.5 m. We deduce that temperature influences beavers at the landscape scale via effects on spring green‐up phenology and winter thermoregulation. Rainfall influences beavers at finer spatial scales through topographical interactions with plant growth, where trees near water level, prone to water logging, producing poorer forage in wetter years. Unlike most other herbivores, beavers are an obligate aquatic species that utilize a restricted ‘central‐place’ foraging range, limiting their ability to take advantage of better forage growth further from water during wetter years. With respect to anthropogenic climate change, interactions between weather variables, plant phenology and topography on forage growth are instructive, and consequently warrant examination when developing conservation management strategies for populations of medium to large herbivores.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of Mystus tengara (Hamilton, 1822) was studied in the Tanore wetland of Rajshahi, northwestern Bangladesh from January 2011 to December 2011. In fish purchased from the local market, a total of 14 713 food items were identified in the stomach contents of 3191 M. tengara specimens, an omnivorous catfish with a diversified feeding strategy including cladocerans, copepods, rotifers, gastropods, green algae, diatoms, insects, ‘small fish remains, fish fry and eggs’ and ‘other’ food items. Insects were the most dominant group of prey throughout the year. Seasonal changes in diet composition were due to the availability of prey items and fish size. Ontogenetic changes were noted between the juveniles and adults. The gut contents of M. tengara showed that the food items were from different layers of the water bodies.  相似文献

Seasonal and annual movements of Australian waterbirds are generally more complex than those of their Northern Hemisphere counterparts, and long-term data are needed to understand their relationships with climatic variables. This paper explores a long-term (1973–2002) set of waterbird counts from coastal Victoria and relates them to climatic data at local and continental scales. Three species (Black Swan Cygnus atratus, White-faced Heron Egretta novaehollandiae and Grey Teal Anas gracilis) were chosen for this analysis. Black Swans have large local breeding populations near the study region; White-faced Herons have smaller local breeding populations and Grey Teal breed extensively in ephemeral inland floodplains, such as those in the Murray-Darling Basin. All showed significant relationships with streamflow, regional rainfall and the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) at appropriate scales and time-lags, with streamflow explaining the most variance. Black Swans showed a strong seasonal cycle in abundance and local climate variables had the greatest influence on the counts. Numbers were positively correlated with streamflow in southern Victoria three to six seasons before each count. Broader-scale climatic patterns were more important for the other two species. Numbers of White-faced Herons were positively correlated with streamflow or rainfall over various parts of Australia seven to nine seasons before each count. Numbers of Grey Teal showed weak seasonal cycles, and were negatively correlated with rainfall in Victoria or the Murray-Darling Basin in the seasons before or during each count, and positively with streamflow in the Murray-Darling Basin 15–18 months before each count.  相似文献

Understanding tree growth in response to rainfall distribution is critical to predicting forest and species population responses to climate change. We investigated inter‐annual and seasonal variation in stem diameter by three emergent tree species in a seasonally dry tropical forest in southeast Pará, Brazil. Annual diameter growth rates by Swietenia macrophylla demonstrated strong positive correlation with annual rainfall totals during 1997–2009; Hymenaea courbaril growth rates demonstrated weak positive correlation, whereas Parkia pendula exhibited weak negative correlation. For both Swietenia and Hymenaea, annual diameter growth rates correlated positively and significantly with rainfall totals during the first 6 mo of the growing year (July to December). Vernier dendrometer bands monitored at 4‐wk intervals during 3–5 yr confirmed strong seasonal effects on stem diameter expansion. Individuals of all three species expanded in unison during wet season months and were static or even contracted during dry season months. Stems of the deciduous Swietenia contracted as crowns were shed during the early dry season, expanded slightly as new crowns were flushed, and then contracted further during 3–5 wk flowering periods in the late dry season by newly mature crowns. The three species’ physiographic distribution patterns at the study site may partially underlie observed differences in annual and seasonal growth. With most global circulation models predicting conditions becoming gradually drier in southeast Amazonia over the coming decades, species such as Swietenia that perform best on the ‘wet end’ of current conditions may experience reduced growth rates. However, population viability will not necessarily be threatened if life history and ecophysiological responses to changing conditions are compensatory.  相似文献

Abstract

High mortality and abnormal growth patterns commonly found in captive juvenile tuatara were hypothesised to be due in part to the effects of long‐term chronic stress of captivity. This study compared plasma concentrations of the reptilian adrenal steroid, corticosterone, in wild juvenile tuatara on Stephens Island, Cook Strait, and in captive juveniles of Stephens Island origin, held in New Zealand institutions, in February and August 1992. Seasonal variation in plasma concentration of corticosterone in wild juveniles in four seasons of the year was also examined. This is the first study of seasonal cycles in plasma corticosterone in a wild juvenile reptile. Plasma corticosterone concentrations were significantly higher in captive juvenile females (4.21 ± 0.27 ng/ml; mean ± SE) compared with wild juvenile females (2.44 ± 0.42 ng/ml) in February (P < 0.05), but not in August, and there was no difference in concentration between captive and wild juvenile males in either month. There was significant seasonal variation in plasma corticosterone in wild juvenile females (P < 0.05). However, there was no seasonal variation observed in wild juvenile males, and the magnitude of the variation in plasma corticosterone was low in both sexes (1.28 ± 0 ng/ml ‐4.65 ±3.41 ng/ml). Although mean plasma corticosterone was higher in captive juvenile females compared with wild juvenile females in February 1992, the value in captive females was within the range of mean plasma corticosterone concentrations observed in the seasonal study, and may be therefore due to asynchronicity of seasonal cycles, rather than stress. Further research is required; however, lack of correlation between plasma corticosterone concentrations and either growth rate or density indicate that captive juvenile tuatara in New Zealand are not suffering from pronounced chronic stress.  相似文献

Rainfall, fire and competition are emphasized as determinants of the density and basal area of woody vegetation in savanna. The semi‐arid savannas of Australia have substantial multi‐year rainfall deficits and insufficient grass fuel to carry annual fire in contrast to the mesic savannas in more northern regions. This study investigates the influence of rainfall deficit and excess, fire and woody competition on the population dynamics of a dominant tree in a semi‐arid savanna. All individuals of Eucalyptus melanophloia were mapped and monitored in three, 1‐ha plots over an 8.5 year period encompassing wet and dry periods. The plots were unburnt, burnt once and burnt twice. A competition index incorporating the size and distance of neighbours to target individuals was determined. Supplementary studies examined seedling recruitment and the transition of juvenile trees into the sapling layer. Mortality of burnt seedlings was related to lignotuber area but the majority of seedlings are fire resistant within 12 months of germination. Most of the juveniles (≤1 cm dbh) of E. melanophloia either died in the dry period or persisted as juveniles throughout 8.5 years of monitoring. Mortality of juveniles was positively related to woody competition and was higher in the dry period than the wet period. The transition of juveniles to a larger size class occurred at extremely low rates, and a subsidiary study along a clearing boundary suggests release from woody competition allows transition into the sapling layer. From three fires the highest proportion of saplings (1–10 cm dbh) reduced to juveniles was only 5.6% suggesting rates of ‘top‐kill’ of E. melanophloia as a result of fire are relatively low. Girth growth was enhanced in wet years, particularly for larger trees (>10 cm dbh), but all trees regardless of size or woody competition levels are vulnerable to drought‐induced mortality. Overall the results suggest that variations in rainfall, especially drought‐induced mortality, have a much stronger influence on the tree demographics of E. melanophloia in a semi‐arid savanna of north‐eastern Australia than fire.  相似文献

Little is known about the life history and environmental factors that regulate the growth rate of hyperdominant trees in flooded Amazonian forests. Pentaclethra macroloba is a hyperdominant tree, and it is widely explored in the Amazon, because its seed oil is a powerful herbal medicine. We evaluated the demographic structure and growth patterns of P. macroloba and tested the effect of the Amazon River flood pulse on its growth. We modeled the growth and determined the age of P. macroloba by analyzing the growth rings of 30 monitored trees in relation to hydroclimatic variables. We also inventoried 240 juvenile and 2072 adult trees arranged in a clustered pattern. The diametric distribution pattern of the juvenile and adult trees was exponential and log-normal, respectively. The trees were found to be up to 102 years old, and 47% of them grew freely toward the canopy. Peak growth in height and diameter occurred at 24 (61.7 cm year-1) and 46 (9.38 mm year-1) years, respectively. Pentaclethra macroloba showed cambial dormancy during the seasonal peak of rainfall (R2 = 0.41; t = −2.62; p < 0.01) and flooding of the Amazon River (R2 = 0.47; t = −3.01; p < 0.01). Increases in rainfall and flood level of the river in the rainy season control the growth rate of P. macroloba, making it a seasonal process. The demographic and growth patterns of P. macroloba respond to the environmental heterogeneity of the estuarine floodplain forest and also reflect its life history over time.  相似文献

The objectives of the study were to inventory the fish community, examine how the fish communities changed in these creeks temporally (season), and compare the fish communities between creeks of varying structure (width). During February 1999 to December 2001, a survey was undertaken to monitor the distribution and abundance of fishes in the Korangi‐Phitti Creek (KPC) system (24°45′N, 67°20′E) near Karachi, Pakistan. Fish were collected from 123 stations using a combination of monofilament gillnets of 8.9 cm, 5.7 cm, and 3.8 cm stretched mesh sizes. A total of 17 023 fish representing 86 species were collected during the study; Sardinella gibbosa and Nematalosa nasus were the most abundant taxa (in terms of numbers of individuals) collected, accounting for over 60% of the total catch. Physical conditions in the study area were found to have significant seasonal (monsoon) patterns related more to temperature and salinity than to rainfall. Seasonal comparisons indicated that the communities were significantly different between the northeast monsoon (NEM) and southwest monsoon (SWM) seasons. Taxa primarily responsible for distinguishing the NEM were the mullets (Moolgarda cunnesius, Liza carinata, Mugil cephalus). The SWM was characterized by Anodontostoma chacunda, Scomberoides commersonnianus, and the engraulid (Thryssa hamiltonii). The community sampled in wide creeks (shipping channels) was very different in composition than the community in small creeks within this system. Wide creeks were characterized by schooling pelagic species (S. gibbosa, N. nasus), while the smaller creeks were characterized by the presence of mullets (M. cunnesius, M. cephalus, L. carinata) and scat (Scatophagus argus). The KPC system was shown to contain a highly diverse fishery, which in turn contributes to regional offshore fisheries (shad, mackerel, tuna and perches). The various negative natural and anthropogenic events in this region highlight the need for information regarding the fish community, water quality, and the mangrove forest to evaluate ecosystem changes, the effects of disturbances, and for the development and making of sound management decisions.  相似文献

The mysid Limnomysis benedeni, one of the most important ponto-caspian invaders, was found in Lake Constance (southern Germany) in 2006. As part of larger studies to evaluate the effects of L. benedeni on the ecosystem, we studied its life-cycle strategies over an entire seasonal cycle in intervals of 3–5 weeks, addressing factors (predation, temperature) which we expected to be most important triggers of the observed changes. The size class distribution and the reproductive pattern indicated that the life cycle of L. benedeni changes seasonally. During winter (November to March), the mysid invested energy in growth and delayed reproduction until April, when the population was dominated by adults. In summer (June to September), the adults reproduced at a smaller body size and the population was disproportionately dominated by juveniles. In a mesocosm experiment that excluded fish predators, the mysids followed the same seasonal patterns of growth and energy investment as in the field population, but the size class distribution differed. Even in summer, the population in the mesocosm was dominated by adults. Stomach analyses of fish showed that L. benedeni is preyed upon by juvenile Perca fluviatilis, which fed size selectively on larger mysids. In conclusion, our results suggest predation was the reason for the dominance of juveniles and the observed size class distribution in summer. In contrast, the smaller adults in summer were most likely a physiological adaptation, perhaps evolved to avoid predation or as a reaction on metabolic losses at higher temperatures.  相似文献

Seasonal and size‐related patterns in feeding habits of the Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda) in the Northeast Aegean were investigated over a 2‐year period May 2007 – May 2009 based on analysis of stomach contents of 134 fish ranging from 266–655 mm fork length. The fish were caught by purse‐seine boats operating around the islands of Lesvos and Chios (Greece). Of the stomachs examined, 46% contained at least one prey item and significant seasonal and size‐related patterns were found in the occurrence of non‐empty stomachs. The overall diet composition in terms of numerical importance was 71% fish, 28% crustaceans and 1% cephalopods. Of the fish, Engraulidae (Engraulis encrasicolus) were the dominant prey taxon, followed by Centracanthidae (Spicara spp.) and then Clupeidae (Sardina pilchardus). Statistically significant monthly variation in diet was apparent, suggesting that S. sarda take advantage of seasonally abundant prey fish in the study area, but no size‐related variation in the importance of the main prey species was detected.  相似文献

A feeding trial was conducted to study the effect of dietary protein (DP) levels on the enzyme activities of different stocks of Macrobrachium rosenbergii juveniles, fed two diets prawn type diets either at optimum (ODP, 32%) or sub‐optimum (SDP, 27%) dietary protein. The activity of key enzymes: glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, amino acid catabolism, pentose phosphate pathway, and energy metabolism was examined on different stocks of M. rosenbergii juveniles in various tissues (muscle, hepatopancreas, and gill). Wild juveniles of M. rosenbergii were collected from the west coast of India, Gujarat (G), Maharashtra (M) and from the east coast of India, Andhra Pradesh (A), and raised in culture ponds of 200 m2 at 1 juvenile m‐2. The experiment was conducted for a period of 60 days. A Visible Implant Elastomer (VIE) Tag was injected into different prawn juveniles’ stocks A, (3.06–3.10 g), M, (0.80–1.01 g) and G (0.90–1.06 g) for the individual identification of each class. All the animals were acclimatized for 7 days before being released into the pond. Each of the two diets, the first with 27% SDP, termed the sub‐optimum level (S), and the second 32% DP, termed the optimum level (O), was fed in triplicate ponds. The weight gain of stocked prawn was significantly higher for G stock (3.03 ± 0.18 g) compared to M stock (2.53 ± 0.25 g) and A stock (1.33 ± 0.10 g). In addition weight gain in ODP was significantly higher (3.05 ± 0.22 g) compared to SDP (2.11 ± 0.17 g). Furthermore, both protein level and stock type had a significant (p ≤ 0.05) effect on the survival rate, specific growth rate, and feed conversion ratio of the prawn. A significant interaction was recorded between metabolic enzyme activities and the variation of dietary protein levels and differences in M. rosenbergii stocks, in which stock “G” and “M” exhibited healthier enzyme physiological status than stock “A”. The findings presented here may conclude that the enzymes quickly respond to dietary protein manipulations of cultured shrimp. The results can be useful in identifying the optimum stock (genotypes) in a given culture condition and subsequently higher production may be achieved.  相似文献

Some birds undergo seasonal colour change by moulting twice each year, typically alternating between a cryptic, non‐breeding plumage and a conspicuous, breeding plumage (‘seasonal plumage colours’). We test for potential drivers of the evolution of seasonal plumage colours in all passerines (N = 5901 species, c. 60% of all birds). Seasonal plumage colours are uncommon, having appeared on multiple occasions but more frequently lost during evolution. The trait is more common in small, ground‐foraging species with polygynous mating systems, no paternal care and strong sexual dichromatism, suggesting it evolved under strong sexual selection and high predation risk. Seasonal plumage colours are also more common in species predicted to have seasonal breeding schedules, such as migratory birds and those living in seasonal climates. We propose that seasonal plumage colours have evolved to resolve a trade‐off between the effects of natural and sexual selection on colouration, especially in seasonal environments.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships (LWRs) are described for 23 fish species (five indigenous species and 18 exotic species) in Lake Erhai, a plateau deep lake located in southwestern China. Four different types of fishing gear were used in order to include all possible length ranges from 2009 to 2012. Results show that the exponent b ranged from 2.72 to 3.79. The length of the growth inflection point between juveniles and females of Pseudorasbora parva and Micropercops swinhonis coincides with the length at which 50% of the females are sexually mature, respectively. The LWRs of P. parva and M. swinhonis are affected by sexual dimorphism, and Hemiculter leucisculus shows significant differences between juveniles and females. In addition, the first LWR records for nine species are provided in this study.  相似文献

Halyomorpha halys Stål (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) has recently become a major orchard pest in the Mid‐Atlantic, USA. Large H. halys populations can develop on wild tree hosts adjacent to orchards, posing an ongoing threat to fruit. Adults and nymphs feed on tree fruit, causing economic injury. Understanding the seasonal patterns of nymphal host use among trees at the orchard‐woodland interface may aid the development of integrated pest management strategies for this pest. In laboratory and field experiments, modified versions of published trap designs – ‘Circle’, ‘Hanula’, ‘M&M’ (after Moeed & Meads) traps – were compared for their effectiveness for capturing H. halys nymphs walking up and down tree trunks. In the laboratory, second instars were released at the top and bottom of ailanthus (tree of heaven), Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle (Simaroubaceae), logs and captures were recorded after 24 h. Circle and M&M traps, respectively, were most effective for capturing nymphs walking up and down. In the field, traps were deployed on ailanthus trees next to apple orchards and captures were recorded weekly from 24 July to 11 September 2013. As in the laboratory, Circle and M&M traps captured the greatest number of upward‐ and downward‐walking nymphs. Hanula traps were least effective in both experiments. In the field, 88% of total captures were of nymphs walking up trees. This was at least partially explained by behavioral assays in the laboratory demonstrating that nymphs exhibited negative gravitaxis and positive phototaxis. Stage‐specific trends in captures of instars walking up during field sampling were observed. These results suggest that trunk traps can be used to address important ecological questions about seasonal patterns of host use by H. halys nymphs.  相似文献

In 4 successive years, we investigated the seasonal and interannual variability of the total polyphenolic pool and of the individual polyphenolic compounds in Myriophyllum verticillatum, as well as their allelopathic activity in a small eutrophic lake. We tested whether nutrient availability explained interannual and seasonal changes in the production of polyphenols. There were no strong interannual variations in plant tissue carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, while total phenolic compounds (TPC) significantly differed between years, especially in apical meristems (range: 38–122 mg g−1  dry weight (DW)). Seasonal patterns, with maxima between May and July, changed between years. Partially confirming the carbon-nutrient balance hypothesis sensu Bryant et al. [Bryant, J.P., Chapin III, F.S., Klein, D.R., 1983. Carbon/nutrient balance of boreal plants in relation to vertebrate herbivory. Oikos 40, 357–368], we found correlations between TPC and the C/N (carbon/nitrogen) ratio in some but not all years, especially in apical meristems. Plant tissue phosphorus content accounted also for the variability in TPC in some years. Crude extracts of apical meristems always inhibited the growth of Anabaena variabilis, used as a target cyanobacterium. Plant TPC concentration and allelopathic activity were significantly correlated in all years except in 2005. Bioassay-directed fractionation of M. verticillatum extracts coupled with LC–MS analyses of the respective fractions revealed several isomers of HHDP-di- and -tri-galloylglucose apparently responsible for the allelopathic effects. The individual active compounds revealed a more distinct seasonal pattern compared to the pool of phenolic compounds in M. verticillatum, with a clear maximum in May, the ecologically most relevant period for inhibitory effects of submerged macrophytes on phytoplankton.  相似文献
