Synergism between nicotine and pyrethrum applied by injection to adult Oncopeltus fasciatus Dal. has been reported by Turner (1951).
When these insecticides were applied alone and as a mixture to adult Tribolium castaneum Hbst., using a dipping technique, the data indicated that independent joint action occurred. Similar action could be eliminated because the two insecticides had varying relative potency.
Since the effect of the pyrethrins has been short-lived in some insects, it was postulated that the absence of synergism might be caused by failure of the nicotine to reach a site of action while the pyrethrins were still acting.
Application of nicotine, followed later by treatment with pyrethrins, gave evidence of synergism. A test in which the interval between treatments was varied from ¾ to 6 hr. showed that toxicity was greatest with the shortest interval between applications, and evidence of synergism had practically disappeared after 6 hr. The maximum amount of synergism observed was about twofold.  相似文献

The toxicities of three petroleum oils to Calandra granaria L. and C. oryzae L. have been determined. The oils were Shell oil P31, Odourless Distillate (O.D.), and Pool burning oil (P.B.O.). At 20 and 25° C. C. oryzae was more resistant than C. granaria to a direct spray of P31. At 20° C. C. oryzae was more resistant than C. granaria to direct sprays of O.D. and P.B.O. The relative toxicities to both species of direct sprays of the three oils could be expressed as: P.B.O. < P31 ≥ O.D. ≥ P.B.O. C. oryzae was the species more resistant to films of P31 on Whatman no. 544 filter-paper.
Films of P31 or a P31/water emulsion on brick, and films of P31 on sacking and cement, were non-toxic to C. granaria , but films of P31 on cement pretreated with gelatin were highly toxic to this species.
Beetles that received doses of P31 a little in excess of those sufficient to knock them down rarely recovered completely. P31 probably suffocates the beetles by blocking their spiracles and/or tracheae.
P31 appears to be the most useful of the three oils for the control of C. granaria. In practice it should be effective as a direct spray, though not as a film, and could therefore be used to control infestations in which beetles were exposed. Films of P31 on surfaces suitably pretreated might, however, be used for control.  相似文献

Spraying with two preparations of D.D.T. had a negligible effect on the maturation of outdoor tomatoes and of summer cabbage. Spraying with a commercial D.D.T. suspension damaged cucurbits and treatment with the suspension base distorted glasshouse cucumbers during one season only.
Benzene hexachloride (B.H.C.) sprays did not affect the yield or flavour of tomatoes, but, at concentrations higher than those normally used, they severely scorched radish, turnip, swede, kale, spinach and beetroot seedlings. The application of B.H.C. dusts stunted seedlings of radish.
On one occasion young potato foliage was damaged by relatively high concentrations of two compounded B.H.C. sprays and by B.H.C. dust but late-season older foliage was unaffected. A spray compounded from B.H.C. dispersible powder caused tainting of potatoes, peas, carrots, beetroot, marrows, cauliflowers and lettuce. Apples and plums treated with B.H.C. spray preparations developed a taint after cooking.  相似文献

A variety of substances has been tested by laboratory methods as insecticides against the bed-bug and the body-louse. The oil-soluble samples were tested by the Potter tower method which gave the most accurate results. Certain liquids were tested by a simple dipping method, and solids insoluble in mineral oils were tested as aqueous solutions by the dipping method or as dusts.
Various organic thiocyanates were found to show similar relative toxicity to the louse and bug, but the pyrethrins were much more toxic to the latter. D.D.T. was highly toxic to both and Gammexane even more insecticidal, especially to the louse.
In the dipping tests, two types of toxic action were observed: an immediate physicochemical action and a delayed lethal action due to asphyxiation. Refined mineral oils kill lice by the latter method. Among the aqueous preparations, the emulsion of cresols known as Lysol was noteworthy for its ovicidal powers.
Some experiments were made with extracts of delphinium seeds, the insecticidal powers of which were shown to reside in the alkaloids.  相似文献

Bliss's (1939) statistical treatment of the hypothesis of the independent joint action of poisons is extended and revised. The possibility of negative correlation in resistance is considered, and the bivariate normal correlation coefficient is used to measure correlation in resistance. There are interesting characteristics of the dosage-mortality curve for a mixture of poisons the resistances to which are log-normally distributed: these are described. The question of whether a mixture of poisons is more toxic if they act similarly or independently is discussed.  相似文献

The efficacy of three reduced-risk insecticides (pyrethrins, insecticidal soap, and narrow-range mineral oil) was determined for nymphs and adults of the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), an exotic pest of North American soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. These insecticides also were evaluated for nontarget effects on one of the aphid's key biological control agents, multicolored Asian lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), including first and third instars, pupae, and adults. A Potter Spray Tower was used to conduct direct spray laboratory bioassays. Results indicated that although pyrethrins and narrow-range mineral oil caused 100% mortality to A. glycines nymphs and adults at 72 h posttreatment, insecticidal soap caused equivalent mortality to only the nymphs during the same time period. However, A. glycines adult mortality due to the insecticidal soap (83.3%) was significantly greater than the control. Pyrethrins were highly toxic to first instars of H. axyridis (98% mortality), but they had no effect on third instars, pupae, or adults. Mineral oil and insecticidal soap were moderately lethal to first (48.9 and 40% mortality, respectively) and third (31.9 and 38.8% mortality, respectively) instars of H. axyridis, but they had no effect on pupae and adults. Our results suggest that pyrethrins, insecticidal soap, and narrow-range mineral oil may prove useful for soybean aphid management in organic soybean due to efficacy against the aphid with differential nontarget effects on select stages of H. axyridis. Additional studies will be necessary to elucidate the efficacy of these insecticides under field conditions.  相似文献

Experiments were made on the effect of conditions before and after treatment on the toxicity to adult Tribolium castaneum Hbst. of the following contact poisons in the media stated: (i) pyrethrins, (2) lauryl thiocyanate, (3) nicotine-all in aqueous medium, (4) dinitro-o-cresol in ethylene glycol, (5) Wakefield half-white oil, (6) D.D.T. in Wakefield half-white oil.
The difference in environment before spraying did not have any marked effect but, with the exceptions of nicotine and petroleum oil, all the toxicants used were more insecticidal when the beetles were kept under cool conditions after spraying. Nicotine showed little difference due to after-treatment when an inverted filter funnel was used to confine the insects, but seemed markedly more toxic under cooler conditions of after-treatment when the insects were confined in the dishes by means of muslin.
Wakefield half-white oil, a non-volatile petroleum oil, proved more toxic when the insects were kept under warm conditions after treatment than under cool conditions. The increase in toxicity of chemically active contact poisons under cool conditions of after-treatment appeared to occur whatever the nature of the carrier, whether volatile or non-volatile, water or oil.
In the substances tested, with the exception of nicotine under special circumstances, the increase in toxicity under cool conditions of after-treatment occurred whatever the volatility of the poison.
The change in toxicity, when cool conditions were compared with hot, varied with the poison used. With nicotine in aqueous medium the change was relatively small, the toxicity under cold conditions throughout being 1-23 times the toxicity under hot conditions throughout. At the other extreme with pyrethrins and terpineol in aqueous medium there was a large alteration, the toxicity under cold conditions throughout being about 7 times the toxicity under the hot conditions throughout.  相似文献

A simple method of testing the contact action of insecticides either as residual dry deposits or as oil films is described. Tests with crystalline deposits of D.D.T. indicated that this method of assay was not sufficiently sensitive for practical use, but tests with oil films could be used. Some of the factors governing the toxicity of D.D.T. in the two systems are discussed, and the results of tests with several organic compounds are given.  相似文献

Experiments are described to compare the toxicity of natural pyrethrins and allethrin, the completely synthetic homologue of cinerin I, and to show the effect of the two synergists, piperonyl butoxide and iaobutyl undecyleneamide (IN 930) on both these active ingredients, using a measured-drop technique with Mucca domestiur L. the housefly, and a residual-film technique with Cimex lectularius L. the bed bug. In the conditions of the experiment, pyrethrins were shown to be twice as toxic as allethrin to flies, and 5.5 times as toxic as allethrin to bugs. The two synergists were tested at several ratios to the two insecticides, ranging from 1 : 1 to 20 : 1. The results were plotted as series of log. concentration/probit regression linea. These were parallel for the bug tests; but in the fly tests, the slope of the line increased with a rise in the proportion of Synergist to insecticide. The estimated median lethal concentrations indicated, in all cases, that the toxicity increased with a rise in the ratio of synergist to insecticide, at least up to 20 : 1. However, the enhancement of toxicity was greatest for the smaller ratios and fell off as the ratio increased. Piperonyl butoxide was the more powerful synergist, increasing the potency of pyrethrins 5 times and allethrin 4 times to flies, and pyrethrins twice and allethrin 3 times to bugs, whereas IN 930 did not increase the potency of either ingredient more than twice to either test insect.
The addition of piperonyl butoxide to residual films of pyrethrins greatly prolonged their effectiveness; but an experiment designed to investigate the effect of the synergist on the stability of this insecticide showed that this action, if it exists, must be slight.  相似文献

Using insecticidal dusts of D.D.T., γ-benzene hexachloride and D.N.C. under the experimental conditions, comparatively large changes in the amount of material of a given concentration are necessary in order to give appreciable differences in mortality, but small changes in the concentration of the poison will produce large differences in toxicity with a given amount applied. This relationship would appear to hold with a number of insecticides.  相似文献

When a set of insecticidal toxicity tests yields parallel regression lines for the relationship between mortality probit and log dose, the potencies of the materials or conditions under test may be compared purely in terms of log L.D. 50's. The purpose of this paper is to suggest that, when tests have been made with all combinations of several different factors, standard methods for the statistical analysis of factorial experiments may be adapted to the examination of the relative potencies.
Data obtained by Potter & Gillham (1046), in a 2' factorial experiment on alternative storage conditions for insects before and after spraying and the adjuvant action of terpineol in a pyrethrins spray, are used in an example of the computations. Details are given of the test of parallelism of the regression lines, the factorial analysis of the log L.D. '50s, the estimation of the mean effects and interactions and their standard errors, the significance tests, and the preparation of summary tables.  相似文献

A bioassay system for the pyrethrins is discussed in which the quantity of toxicant that flying insects accumulate is measured, as well as the responses of the insects. The determination of spray pick-up from water-base sprays is described, and the use of primary responses, such as activation and paralysis, in biological assays is advocated. The test system is discussed in detail for Aëdes aegypti L. and the special characteristics of some other species of flying insects noted. It is considered that the location of the site of action of the pyrethrins under these conditions is at the peripheral nervous system of the test insects.  相似文献

The accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS, for example H2O2) is linked to several chronic pathologies, including cancer and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases (Gate, L., Paul, J., Ba, G. N., Tew, K. D., and Tapiero, H. (1999) Biomed. Pharmacother. 53, 169-180). Protein kinase C (PKC) gamma is a unique isoform of PKC that is found in neuronal cells and eye tissues. This isoform is activated by ROS such as H2O2. Mutations (H101Y, G118D, S119P, and G128D) in the PKCgamma Cys-rich C1B domain caused a form of dominant non-episodic cerebellar ataxia in humans (Chen, D.-H., Brkanac, Z., Verlinde, C. L. M. J., Tan, X.-J., Bylenok, L., Nochli, D., Matsushita, M., Lipe, H., Wolff, J., Fernandez, M., Cimino, P. J., Bird, T. D., and Raskind, W. H. (2003) Am. J. Hum. Genet. 72, 839-849; van de Warrenburg, B. P. C., Verbeek, D. S., Piersma, S. J., Hennekam, F. A. M., Pearson, P. L., Knoers, N. V. A. M., Kremer, H. P. H., and Sinke, R. J. (2003) Neurology 61, 1760-1765). This could be due to a failure of the mutant PKCgamma proteins to be activated by ROS and to subsequently inhibit gap junctions. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the cellular mechanism of activation of PKCgamma by H2O2 and the resultant effects on gap junction activity. H2O2 stimulated PKCgamma enzyme activity independently of elevations in cellular diacylglycerol, the natural PKC activator. Okadaic acid, a phosphatase inhibitor, did not affect H2O2-stimulated PKCgamma activity, indicating that dephosphorylation was not involved. The reductant, dithiothreitol, abolished the effects of H2O2, suggesting a direct oxidation of PKCgamma at the Cys-rich C1 domain. H2O2 induced the C1 domain of PKCgamma to translocate to plasma membranes, whereas the C2 domain did not. Direct effects of H2O2 on PKCgamma were demonstrated using two-dimensional SDS-PAGE. Results demonstrated that PKCgamma formed disulfide bonds in response to H2O2. H2O2-activated PKCgamma was targeted into caveolin-1- and connexin 43-containing lipid rafts, and the PKCgamma phosphorylated the connexin 43 gap junction proteins on Ser-368. This resulted in disassembly of connexin 43 gap junction plaques and decreased gap junction activity. Results suggested that H2O2 caused oxidation of the C1 domain, activation of the PKCgamma, and inhibition of gap junctions. This inhibition of gap junctions could provide a protection to cells against oxidative stress.  相似文献

Alterations of the force-frequency relationship in the failing human heart depend on the underlying cardiac disease. Basic Res. Cardiol. 87, 213-221.]. Analyses of protein levels in these failing hearts reveal that the SR Ca-ATPase is down-regulated on average by 50% and that the Na/Ca exchanger is up-regulated on average by a factor of two. In this paper, we test the hypothesis that this altered pattern of expression of Ca handling proteins is sufficient to account for changes in excitation-contraction coupling properties measured experimentally at the cellular level. To do this, we present an integrated model of excitation-contraction coupling in the guinea pig ventricular cell. The model is used to determine the effects of SR Ca-ATPase down-regulation and Na/Ca exchanger up-regulation on action potential duration, Ca transient shape and amplitude, and isometric force. Model analyses demonstrate that changes in Ca handling proteins play a direct and critical role in prolongation of action potential duration, and in reduction of contractile force in heart failure.  相似文献

Evaluation of synergism among Bacillus thuringiensis toxins.   总被引:9,自引:3,他引:6       下载免费PDF全文
A simple test for synergism among toxins is described and applied to previously reported data on independent and joint toxicities of insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis. The analysis shows synergism between a 27-kDa (CytA) toxin and 130- or 65-kDa (CryIV) toxins from B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis against Aedes aegypti larvae. No positive synergism between 130- and 65-kDa toxins or among three CryIA toxins tested against seven species of Lepidoptera occurred. Comparisons with the original interpretations of these data show one case in which synergism occurred but was reported previously as absent and two cases that were not synergistic but were reported previously as suggestive of synergism. These results show that lack of an appropriate test for synergism can produce misleading conclusions. The methods described here can be used to test for synergistic effects of any poisons.  相似文献

Mice that lack the mitochondrial form of superoxide dismutase (SOD2) incur severe pathologies and mitochondrial deficiencies, including major depletion of complex II, as a consequence of buildup of endogenous reactive oxygen species (Melov, S., Coskun, P., Patel, M., Tuinstra, R., Cottrell, B., Jun, A. S., Zastawny, T. H., Dizdaroglu, M., Goodman, S. I., Huang, T. T., Miziorko, H., Epstein, C. J., and Wallace, D. C. (1999) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 96, 846-851 and Li, Y., Huang, T. T., Carlson, E. J., Melov, S., Ursell, P. C., Olson, J. L., Noble, L. J., Yoshimura, M. P., Berger, C., Chan, P. H., Wallace, D. C., and Epstein, C. J. (1995) Nat. Genet. 11, 376-381). These problems can be greatly attenuated or rescued by synthetic antioxidant treatment, such as with the catalytic antioxidant EUK189 (Hinerfeld, D., Traini, M. D., Weinberger, R. P., Cochran, B., Doctrow, S. R., Harry, J., and Melov, S. (2004) J. Neurochem. 88, 657-667). We have used heart mitochondria from sod2 null mice to better understand mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production both in the absence of SOD2 and following in vivo antioxidant treatment. Isolated heart mitochondria from 5-day-old sod2 null animals respiring on the complex II substrate succinate exhibited statistically significant higher levels of mitochondrial O2* (157%, p < 0.01) but significantly less H2O2 (33%, p < 0.001) than wild type littermates. Treatment of sod2 nullizygous mice with EUK189 proportionately increased the levels of complex II and H2O2. Increased production of O2* resulting from complex II normalization had no effect on steady state levels due to the rapid conversion to H2O2, a process presumably aided by the presence of the EUK189, an SOD mimetic.  相似文献

The phylogenetic problem of Huia (Amphibia: Ranidae)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A taxonomic consensus for the diverse and pan-global frog family Ranidae is lacking. A recently proposed classification of living amphibians [Frost, D.R., Grant, T., Faivovich, J., Bain, R. H., Haas, A., Haddad, C.F.B., de Sá, R.O., Channing, A., Wilkinson, M., Donnellan, S.C., Raxworthy, C.J., Campbell, J.A., Blotto, B.L., Moler, P., Drewes, R.C., Nussbaum, R.A., Lynch, J.D., Green, D.M., Wheeler, W.C., 2006. The amphibian tree of life. B. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist. 297, 1-370] included expansion of the Southeast Asian ranid frog genus Huia from seven to 47 species, but without having studied the type species of Huia. This study tested the monophyly of this concept of Huia by sampling the type species and putative members of Huia. Molecular phylogenetic analyses consistently recovered the type species H. cavitympanum as the sister taxon to other Bornean-endemic species in the genus Meristogenys, rendering all previously published concepts of Huia as polyphyletic. Members of Huia sensu [Frost, D.R., Grant, T., Faivovich, J., Bain, R. H., Haas, A., Haddad, C.F.B., de Sá, R.O., Channing, A., Wilkinson, M., Donnellan, S.C., Raxworthy, C.J., Campbell, J.A., Blotto, B.L., Moler, P., Drewes, R.C., Nussbaum, R.A., Lynch, J.D., Green, D.M., Wheeler, W.C., 2006. The amphibian tree of life. B. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist. 297, 1-370.] appear in four places within the family Ranidae. A clade containing the type species of Odorrana is phylogenetically unrelated to the type species of Huia, and Odorrana is removed from synonymy with Huia. These findings underscore the need to include relevant type species in phylogenetic studies before proposing sweeping taxonomic changes. The molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed a high degree of homoplasy in larval and adult morphology of Asian ranid frogs. Detailed studies are needed to identify morphological synapomorphies that unite members in these major clades of ranid frogs.  相似文献

At a constant temperature of 24° C. the final larval instar of Diataraxia oleracea lasts about 10 days, during which its resistance to DDT and γ-BHC as contact insecticides progressively increases up to the 5th or 6th day. It then suddenly decreases, this coinciding with cessation of feeding and the beginning of prepupal formation.
Between the 2nd and the 6th days the gross body weight of the last-instar larva increases from about 0.27 to 0.65g. Under the conditions of the experiments, the LD50 of parathion, as a stomach poison, was linearly related to body weight; on the same basis TEPP was slightly less, and lead arsenate, slightly more, toxic to the larger than to the smaller larvae. However, DDT as a stomach or contact insecticide, and γ-BHC as a stomach poison were notably less toxic to the larger larvae. For example, the increase in LD50 for an increase in larval body weight of × 2 was about × 11 for DDT as a stomach poison and about × 12 as a contact insecticide.
The order of effectiveness of the above insecticides as stomach poisons for the last-instar larva of D. oleracea was parathion > DDT > γ-BHC > TEPP = lead arsenate. Zinc fluoarsenate and rotenone were relatively non-toxic. Larvae of D. oleracea were repelled by food leaf treated with an extract of natural pyrethrins.  相似文献
