Cannibalism in cephalopods   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Cannibalism refers to the action of consuming a member of the same species and is common in many taxa. This paper reviews the available literature on cannibalism in cephalopods. All species of the class Cephalopoda are predators and cannibalism is common in most species whose diet has been studied. Cannibalism in cephalopods is density-dependent due to their aggressive predatory and in case of the octopuses territorial nature. It also depends upon local and temporal food availability and of the reproductive season. Cannibalistic behaviour is positively related to the size of both cannibal and victim. It can affect population dynamics of cephalopods in periods of low food availability and/or high population abundance. Cephalopods are generally restricted in their ability to store energy. It is thus assumed that cannibalism is part of a population energy storage strategy enabling cephalopod populations to react to favourable and adverse environmental conditions by increasing and reducing their number. Finally, we propose five orientation points for future research on cannibalism in cephalopods.  相似文献

While several software programs exist to count bacterial colonies on a Petri plate, no suitable solution is available for quick and reliable enumeration of small, live insects. We have written a program called FlyCounter that can obtain counts from images, even if insects are highly clumped in space. We also describe a simple and inexpensive system for anesthetizing and capturing high-quality images of the small insects. Taken together, our process is fast, fully automatic, and has a low percentage of error (~1%-4% on average). Although we have tested our software on fruit flies, it should be simple to extend to other organisms of similar size.  相似文献

The key argument for the identification of prehistoric cannibalism is provided by analysis of close similarities in the treatment of human and animal remains. Such analysis requires precise data on depositional context, meticulous excavation records, detailed bone modification studies, a relatively large sample of human and animal postcranial bones, and data on local mortuary practices. With the exception of Fontbrégoua Cave, these necessary conditions are lacking at all Stone Age European sites where it has been hypothesized that cannibalism occurred. The alternative hypothesis of secondary burial practices has been proposed informally for some sites and, in a more formal and detailed way, for Krapina and Fontbrégoua. However, this hypothesis does not have a higher probability, is not justified by current data, and uses ethnographic analogies to prop up interpretations of materials for which contextual data are missing or have been neglected. At Fontbrégoua, cannibalism remains the simplest and most plausible explanation of the evidence; at Krapina and other sites the available evidence is insufficient to prove either secondary burial or cannibalism.  相似文献

Cannibalism in teleost fish   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1.  Cannibalistic behaviour in fish is reviewed here for the first time.
2.  Cannibalism has been recorded in 36 out of 410 teleost families according to the published literature, but is considered to be more widespread than this. Finding examples of cannibalism is not difficult, and it may be more interesting to look for taxa in which the behaviour does not take place.
3.  The families that have provided the most information include the Engraulididae, Esocidae, Poeciliidae, Gasterosteidae, Percidae and Cichlidae.
4.  Cannibalism has been classified into seven types, depending on life-history stage, age difference between cannibal and prey, and whether or not they are related.
5.  Although in captive populations, cannibalism tends to increase with increasing density and decreasing food availability, its role in population regulation has not been unequivocally demonstrated in any wild population, and obtaining the necessary data presents a formidable challenge to fish ecologists.
6.  Cannibalism is of some economic importance in aquaculture, but its impact can be reduced relatively easily, by frequent grading to reduce size variability.
7.  The main proximate advantage conferred by cannibalism is assumed to be nutritional. In an ultimate sense the behaviour may have evolved as a particularly effective competitive strategy.
8.  Finally, it is considered that cannibalism deserves more attention from fish biologists. Investigations, however, should recognize the different types of cannibalistic interaction, and, in particular, should explore the different implications of kin and nonkin cannibalism

Background

Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the largest terrestrial carnivores of all time, and consequently its ecology and diet have been the focus of much discussion. However, there is little direct evidence of diet or feeding habits in this species.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Examination of museum collections has revealed four specimens of Tyrannosaurus rex that bear tooth marks made by large, carnivorous dinosaurs. Because Tyrannosaurus is the only large carnivore known from the Late Maastrichtian of western North America, we infer that Tyrannosaurus made these tooth marks.

Conclusions/Significance

The marks are interpreted as feeding traces and these fossils therefore record instances of cannibalism. Given that this behavior has a low preservation potential, cannibalism seems to have been a surprisingly common behavior in Tyrannosaurus, and this behavior may have been relatively common in carnivorous dinosaurs.  相似文献

In this study, we propose and investigate a two-stage population model with cannibalism. It is shown that cannibalism can destabilize and lower the magnitude of the interior steady state. However, it is proved that cannibalism has no effect on the persistence of the population. Based on this model, we study two systems of predator-prey interactions where the prey population is cannibalistic. A sufficient condition based on the nontrivial boundary steady state for which both populations can coexist is derived. It is found via numerical simulations that introduction of the predator population may either stabilize or destabilize the prey dynamics, depending on cannibalism coefficients and other vital parameters.  相似文献

Cannibalism in an age-structured predator-prey system   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Recently, Kohlmeier and Ebenhöh showed that cannibalism can stabilize population cycles in a Lotka-Volterra type predator-prey model. Population cycles in their model are due to the interaction between logistic population growth of the prey and a hyperbolic functional response. In this paper, we consider a predator-prey system where cyclic population fluctuations are due to the age structure in the predator species. It is shown that cannibalism is also a stabilizing mechanism when population oscillations are due to this age structure. We conclude that in predator-prey systems, cannibalism by predators can stabilize both externally generated (consumer-resource) as well as internally generated (agestructure) fluctuations.  相似文献

The Wari’, a southern Amazonian group of the Txapakura linguistic family, ate their dead and their enemies until at least the beginning of the 1960s. This article argues the continuity between these two forms of cannibalism by demonstrating that the Wari’ conceive the ingestion of the dead as a means of transforming them into prey. Predation – a defining characteristic of Amerindian warfare cannibalism – comprises a crucial means of differentiating two terms set in relationship, whether these terms be allies and enemies, the Wari’ and animals, or the living and the dead. In a world peopled by actual or potential human subjects, to transform the other into prey is to guarantee oneself the exclusive position of human, despite this being an essentially temporary position.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Starvation apparently does not induce cannibalism in F. leucas , but the occurrence of infirm, cytolized and helpless individuals in a dish of normal ones seems to afford an opportunity for it. Ingestion of the victim as well as the process of its digestion in the food vacuole of the cannibal is described. The highest number found ingested by a single cannibal is three. Cytoplasm and the micronuclei are digested before the macronucleus. Part of the macronucleus is present in the food vacuole of the cannibal even 16 hours after ingestion of the prey. By 24 hours, digestion is complete. The deoxyribonucleic acid of the macronucleus undergoes some specifiable change in its constitution towards the latter part of its digestion. Cannibalism does not lead to giant formation.  相似文献

Introduced and allopatric populations of brown trout Salmo trutta and rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were sampled in Slovenia for stable isotope analysis to assess dietary niche shifts through ontogeny and estimate the propensity for cannibalism. Both S. trutta and O. mykiss are cannibals, with higher average relative contribution of conspecific assimilated energy for S. trutta (27·9%) compared with O. mykiss (7·7%). The smallest cannibal was 166 mm in the S. trutta population and 247 mm in the O. mykiss population.  相似文献

Cannibalism as an evolutionary strategy   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Mathematical models of predator-prey systems in which the prey species has a three-stage life cycle are studied. Certain stages of the prey life history are allowed to use younger stages as food. It is shown that sufficiently restricted cannibalism can result in an increase in the numbers of adult prey on a sustained basis when cannibalism decreases the vulnerability of a stage subject to predation or increases overall productivity.  相似文献

Cannibalism is a mechanism to delay sporulation in Bacillus subtilis. Cannibal cells express the skf and sdp toxin systems to lyse a fraction of their sensitive siblings. The lysed cells release nutrients that serve to feed the community, effectively delaying spore formation. Here we provide evidence that the subpopulation of cells that differentiates into cannibals is the same subpopulation that produces the extracellular matrix that holds cells together in biofilms. Cannibalism and matrix formation are both triggered in response to the signalling molecule surfactin. Nutrients released by the cannibalized cells are preferentially used by matrix-producing cells, as they are the only cells expressing resistance to the Skf and Sdp toxins. As a result this subpopulation increases in number and matrix production is enhanced when cannibalism toxins are produced. The cannibal/matrix-producing subpopulation is also generated in response to antimicrobials produced by other microorganisms and may thus constitute a defense mechanism to protect B. subtilis from the action of antibiotics in natural settings.  相似文献

Cannibalism is a recurrent behavior across the animal kingdom, with important ecological and evolutionary consequences due to its potential trade-offs on the fitness of involved individuals and demography dynamics. Cannibalism has been reported in eight species of several phylogenetic lineages within Liolaemus, a highly diverse genus of Neotropical lizards. Within the Liolaemus montanus series, two species are reported to eat juveniles in captivity. We observed a female Liolaemus orientalis, another L. montanus series member, which had ingested a juvenile of its own species in the wild. As it generally happens with other lizards, cannibalism in Liolaemus has been suggested to be performed by the larger sex, with L. chiliensis being the only other case observed until now in which the cannibalistic individual was a female. The fact that females are slightly smaller than males in L. orientalis means that our observation is an exception to previously observed trends. We suggest that there is a relationship between this behavior and the presence of a masculine trait in the cannibalistic female: developed precloacal pores. We also discuss how refuge availability may influence demography and the probability of dispersing juveniles encountering adults, increasing the chances for cannibalism to play some role in population density regulation.  相似文献

Cannibalism in whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Cannibalism in whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) is studied on the basis of an evolutionary model. The model predicts that individuals may be cannibalistic if they gain sufficiently in terms of fitness relative to the reduction in survival caused by this behaviour. If cannibalistic forms mainly increase survival it is predicted that cannibalism is particularly likely to be an evolutionarily optimal strategy if only a few age classes are being cannibalized and if, simultaneously, many age classes are cannibalistic. The same pattern, although less apparent, emerges on the basis of a model assuming that cannibalistic forms mainly increase fecundity. The whitefish in River Sokna spawn during late October to late November. Males dominate the spawning run numerically. Growth rate in mature stages is low, 1.0 cm·y-1 for males and 1.3 cm·y-1 for females. Yearly survival rate in mature stages is 0.574, and survival from egg to mature is 0.000078%. Larger whitefish on the average lay more and larger eggs than do smaller. Females were more cannibalistic than males; in total cannibalism contributed to an egg mortality of at least 8.8%. This is consistent with the derived theoretical predictions. Our theoretical and empirical analyses on whitefish are supported by the observed lack of sexual differences in the cannibalistic behaviour of brown trout (Salmo trutta) and Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus).  相似文献
