In contrast with one-channel biotelemetry, multichannel biotelemetry systems permit the analysis of biological systems by means of cybernetics. Some simple examples are given. The basic concept of a multichannel system is described. The criteria of quality of which the nonevident ones are defined by detailing the test circuits are the following (input criteria): number of channels, bandwidth, voltage range, impedance, maximum voltage outside the signal band, stability of the power supply for transducers, factor of safety against multipath propagation, distance between transmitter and receiver, shock, vibration and temperature range, weight, volume and operating time. Output criteria: signal-to-noise ratio, linearity, crosstalk transfer function, different time lags.  相似文献

Long-term in vivo measurements of the corrosion potentials of various implantable metal materials are performed using an implantable multichannel telemetry system. The data acquisition system has been designed to achieve maximum ease of operation for routine tests in animal applications. A novel signal encoding technique offers advantageous properties in connection with a commercial audio cassette tape recorder for signal storage. The flexibility of the design extends the scope of application to include not only biomaterial testing but all low frequency data transmissions in biological research.  相似文献

A multichannel biotelemetry system using pulse position modulation has been developed to monitor continuously the environment in birds' nests. Probes to measure temperature at six points, relative humidity, light and egg attitude, together with a transmitter and power supply are contained in a fibreglass shell, having the shape, size and weight of the egg of the species being studied. The sensing egg is placed in the nest at the completion of a clutch and not removed until the young have hatched. A low-power transponder is used to relay the signals up to 2 miles to a data-logging system in the laboratoy.  相似文献

A multichannel personal type telemetry system is described that utilizes PCM encoding for the most effective range with minimum RF bandwidth and noise interference. Recent IC developments (COS MOS) make it possible to implement a sophisticated encoding system (PCM) within the low power and size constraints necessary for a personal biotelemetry system. Biotelemetry provides high-quality data in awake, free-ranging animals without the effects of anesthesia and surgery. Although many biological parameters can be measured using biotelemetry, simultaneous telemetric measurements of pressure and flow have not been available. The objective of this study was to evaluate simultaneous measurements of blood flow, pressure, ECG, and temperature in a fully implantable system. This novel system allows the measurement of up to four channels of blood flow, up to three channels of pressure, and a single channel each of ECG and temperature. The system includes a bidirectional radio-frequency link that allows the implant to send data and accept commands to perform various tasks. The system is controlled by a base station decoder/controller that decodes the data stream sent by the implant into analog signals. The system also converts the data into a digital data stream that can be sent via ethernet to a remote computer for storage and/or analysis. The system was chronically implanted in swine and alligators for up to 5 wk. Both bench and in vivo animal tests were performed to evaluate system performance. Results show that this biotelemetry system is capable of long-term accurate monitoring of simultaneous blood flow and pressure. The system allows, within the room, recordings, since the implant transmission range is between 6 and 10 m, and, with a relay, backpack transmission distance of up to 500 m can be achieved. This system will have significant utility in chronic models of cardiovascular physiology and pathology.  相似文献

In this article, we report a new type of fluorescence confocal microscope: frequency division multiplexed multichannel fluorescence confocal microscope, in which we encode the spatial location information into the frequency domain. In this microscope, the exciting laser beam is first split into multiple beams and each beam is modulated at a different frequency. These multiple beams are focused at different locations of the target to form multiple focal points, which further generate multiple fluorescent emission spots. The fluorescent emissions from different focal points are also modulated at different frequencies, because the exciting beams are modulated at different frequencies (or difference carrier frequency). Then, all the fluorescent emissions (modulated at different frequencies) are collected together and detected by a highly sensitive, large-dynamic-range photomultiplier tube. By demodulating the detected signal (i.e., via the Fourier transform), we can distinguish the fluorescent light emitted from the different locations by the corresponding carrier frequencies. The major advantage of this unique fluorescence confocal microscope is that it not only has a high sensitivity because of the use of photomultiplier tube but also can get multiple-point data simultaneously, which is crucial to study the dynamic behavior of many biological process. As an initial step, to verify the feasibility of the proposed multichannel confocal microscope, we have developed a two-channel confocal fluorescence microscope and applied it to study the dynamic behavior of the changes of the calcium ion concentration during the single cardiac myocyte contraction. Our preliminary experimental results demonstrated that we could indeed realize multichannel confocal fluorescence microscopy by utilizing the frequency division multiplexed microscope, which could become an effective tool to study the dynamic behavior of many biological processes.  相似文献

The paper, which is a continuation of the previous one, describes a six-channel, PC-dedicated implanted telemetry system, including the schematic drawings, and explanation of all the differences between a single channel and multichannel system approach. The scheme of an additional multichannel analog output, that makes a pure analog recording possible, even without the PC connection, is also presented. Specific methods for both parallel (Centronics) and serial (RS232C) port interfacing are demonstrated and the controlling software principles are discussed. The representative recordings obtained from animal experiments of simultaneous (direct and integrated) multichannel intestinal EMG (MMC) are shown. The device can also be used for the ECG, EEG and uterine smooth muscle electrical activity recording.  相似文献

A new microspectrofluorometer has been developed that combines a photometric fluorescence microscope with an optical multichannel analyzer. This instrument provides fluorescence emission spectra of biological materials by detecting the entire spectrum simultaneously in real time. These spectra are subsequently recorded and corrected so as to identify the fluorescent reaction products or to test whether fluorescent cytochemical probes bind to the expected substrate within cells. The procedures and advantages of optical multichannel analysis are described, and an application of microspectrofluorometry to acriflavine-Feulgen cytochemistry is given.  相似文献

Multichannel feeding, whereby consumers feed across resource channels such as upon herbivore and detritivore resources, acts to link discrete compartments of a food web with implications for ecosystem functioning and stability. Currently however, we have little understanding which feeding strategies of consumers underlie multichannel feeding. We therefore link spider functional group and resource density‐dependent or density‐independent feeding strategies to multichannel feeding by quantifying not only consumer diet, but also the relative availability of resources. Here we analysed herbivore (green) and detritivore (brown) prey use by spider communities in grasslands, and tested if available prey biomass proportions were linked to observed spider dietary proportions. Different spider functional groups each linked green and brown resource channels, but while green prey were always consumed in proportion to their relative biomass, brown prey were consumed independently of proportion by some functional groups. Additionally, we found greater intraguild predation by cursorial spiders when green resources were relatively scarcer, suggesting green prey was preferred, and needed to be compensated for when rare. Overall, we observed a stronger consumer connection to the green than brown resource channel, yet this green connection was more variable due to greater range in green resource availability across grasslands and density‐dependent consumption on green prey. Consequently, multichannel feeding by spiders was determined by density‐dependent and density‐independent feeding strategies that varied by spider functional group and across resources channels. Our results demonstrate that the role of multichannel feeding by spiders in linking separate food web compartments is a dynamic component of food web structure in these wild grasslands.  相似文献

The scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) is discussed in view of biological applications. Theoretical considerations are given, but the emphasis is directed to practical examples from a range of biological projects. The STEM is most efficiently used in elastic and inelastic dark-field modes providing information on the scattering power of the irradiated sample. Thus, the STEM is an ideal tool for quantitative measurements such as mass-mapping or element-mapping at high resolution. Limitations of such methods due to multiple scattering and quantum noise are briefly reviewed.  相似文献

A review is presented of some features of hybrid integrated circuits that make their use advantageous in miniature biotelemetry applications. The various techniques for fabricating resistors, capacitors and interconnections by both thin film and thick film technology are discussed. The use of chip capacitors, resistors, and especially standard IC chips on substrates with fired-on interconnection patterns is emphasized. The review is designed primarily to acquaint biotelemetry users and designers with an overview of this fabrication technique so that they can better communicate their needs with an understanding of its limitations and advantages to facilities specializing in hybrid construction.  相似文献

We investigate the general conditions for morphogenesis. It is found that not only the Turing condition shall be satisfied, but also that some other requirements must be fulfilled. Their physical meaning is that the system should have more than one stationary state. In biological terms this means that the competence of differentiation is necessary in order to finish the morphogenesic process. These ideas are illustrated by a simple mathematical model. For this model the bifurcation analysis and computer results are discussed. Furthermore the parametric regulation of the morphogenesis is considered in connection with the role played by the genetic information.  相似文献

The neural integrator of the oculomotor system is a privileged field for artificial neural network simulation. In this paper, we were interested in an improvement of the biologically plausible features of the Arnold-Robinson network. This improvement was done by fixing the sign of the connection weights in the network (in order to respect the biological Dale's Law). We also introduced a notion of distance in the network in the form of transmission delays between its units. These modifications necessitated the introduction of a general supervisor in order to train the network to act as a leaky integrator. When examining the lateral connection weights of the hidden layer, the distribution of the weights values was found to exhibit a conspicuous structure: the high-value weights were grouped in what we call clusters. Other zones are quite flat and characterized by low-value weights. Clusters are defined as particular groups of adjoining neurons which have strong and privileged connections with another neighborhood of neurons. The clusters of the trained network are reminiscent of the small clusters or patches that have been found experimentally in the nucleus prepositus hypoglossi, where the neural integrator is located. A study was conducted to determine the conditions of emergence of these clusters in our network: they include the fixation of the weight sign, the introduction of a distance, and a convergence of the information from the hidden layer to the motoneurons. We conclude that this spontaneous emergence of clusters in artificial neural networks, performing a temporal integration, is due to computational constraints, with a restricted space of solutions. In recent years proteomics became increasingly important to functional genomics. Although a large amount of data is generated by high throughput large‐scale techniques, a connection of these mostly heterogeneous data from different analytical platforms and of different experiments is limited. Data mining procedures and algorithms are often insufficient to extract meaningful results from large datasets and therefore limit the exploitation of the generated biological information. In our proteomic core facility, which almost exclusively focuses on 2‐DE/MS‐based proteomics, we developed a proteomic database custom tailored to our needs aiming at connecting MS protein identification information to 2‐DE derived protein expression profiles. The tools developed should not only enable an automatic evaluation of single experiments, but also link multiple 2‐DE experiments with MS‐data on different levels and thereby helping to create a comprehensive network of our proteomics data. Therefore the key feature of our “PROTEOMER” database is its high cross‐referencing capacity, enabling integration of a wide range of experimental data. To illustrate the workflow and utility of the system, two practical examples are provided to demonstrate that proper data cross‐referencing can transform information into biological knowledge.  相似文献

Emphasizing that model development should be in accordance with the context under consideration, a model for plant nitrogen uptake is developed for use in connection with soil nitrogen models. The aim of the modeling is to improve the accuracy in model simulations of plant nitrogen uptake by application of optimization theory and apriori information of plant nitrogen content. A simple soil nitrogen model is coupled to the plant nitrogen uptake model, and solutions, obtained by two different methods, are presented. Suggestion for how to use the modeling principles in connection with a more complex plant nitrogen uptake model, and apriori information of plant dry weight, is given. It is believed that the modeling principles can also be used on other types of dynamic models with given apriori information.  相似文献

This paper first identified differentially expressed miRNAs associated with early gastric cancer and then respectively constructed relevant connection networks among the identified differentially expressed miRNAs that corresponded to early gastric cancer and control tissues. Twenty-three differentially expressed miRNAs were identified, 18 of which were different with the related results on the same data, and they provide great discriminatory power between patients and controls. There are not only conserved unchangeable sub-networks but also different sub-networks between the two connection networks. From the consistency and differences between two connection networks, we disclosed several new biological features that promote early gastric cancer development. This study shows 23 miRNAs that are early gastric cancer-specific and are worthy to do further experimental studies. The revealed biological features for early gastric cancer will provide new insights into improved understanding of the molecular mechanisms of this disease.  相似文献

A one-of-a-kind high speed optical multichannel spectrometer was designed and built at NIH and described in this journal in 1997 [J.W. Cole, R.W. Hendler, P.D. Smith, H.A. Fredrickson, T.J. Pohida, W.S. Friauf. A high speed optical multichannel analyzer. J Biochem Biophys Methods 1997;35:16–174.]. The most unique aspect of this instrument was the ability to follow an entire time course from a single activation using a single sample. The instrument has been used to study rapid kinetic processes in the photon-driven bacteriorhodopsin photocycle and electron transport from cytochrome c to cytochrome aa3 and from cytochrome aa3 to oxygen. The present paper describes a second generation instrument with a number of important enhancements which significantly improve its capabilities for multichannel kinetic studies. An example application is presented in which the kinetics of photon-induced proton flow across the biological membrane is measured simultaneously with the individual steps of the photocycle determined optically. Matching the time constants for the two processes indicates which molecular transformations are associated with major proton movements.  相似文献

A mathematical model for the transmission of two interacting classes of mastitis causing bacterial pathogens in a herd of dairy cows is presented and applied to a specific data set. The data were derived from a field trial of a specific measure used in the control of these pathogens, where half the individuals were subjected to the control and in the others the treatment was discontinued. The resultant mathematical model (eight non-linear simultaneous ordinary differential equations) therefore incorporates heterogeneity in the host as well as the infectious agent and consequently the effects of control are intrinsic in the model structure. A structural identifiability analysis of the model is presented demonstrating that the scope of the novel method used allows application to high order non-linear systems. The results of a simultaneous estimation of six unknown system parameters are presented. Previous work has only estimated a subset of these either simultaneously or individually. Therefore not only are new estimates provided for the parameters relating to the transmission and control of the classes of pathogens under study, but also information about the relationships between them. We exploit the close link between mathematical modelling, structural identifiability analysis, and parameter estimation to obtain biological insights into the system modelled.  相似文献
