A morphometric truss network system and meristic counts were used to investigate the hypothesis of population fragmentation of pikeperch Sander lucioperca among four major fishing areas in the Caspian Sea drainage. Univariate analysis of variance showed significant differences between the means of the four groups for 20 out of 32 standardized morphometric measurements (27 truss, five traditional characters) and six out of nine meristic counts. The first two canonical discriminant functions accounted for 93 and 92.3% of the total variability in morphometric and meristic characteristics, respectively. A dendogram derived from cluster analysis of Mahalanobis distances and a discriminant analysis among the groups confirmed three distinct populations in these regions, while there was a relatively high degree of overlap between all locations when using meristic characters. The most relevant morphometric characteristics were the measured distances on body heights and the caudal peduncle area. This study indicated that the morphometric truss network system was more adequate than meristic characters for separation among the populations.  相似文献

Systematists may rely on morphometric differences among samples of specimens for the recognition of living and fossil species, even though morphometric differentiation may be caused by non-genetic factors, such as ecophenotypy, differential growth rates and taphonomic mixing. When genetic differences between sexes or among closely related species are expressed as differences in the morphology of the individual or population, potentially valuable information becomes available to the systematist for a variety of genetic and ecological investigations. We have studied the morphology of the freshwater snail Melanoides tuberculata (Muller, 1774) in Israel, where males occur in what would otherwise be normally parthenogenetic (all female) populations. In modern M. tuberculata, sex may be determined by observation of gonadal tissue; in fossil specimens, any classification according to sex must be accomplished using only preservable features of the mineralized shell. Previous research confirmed that in large samples, mean shell shape of male and female snails differed significantly, but the degree of difference was too small to identify the sex of any individual specimen. We apply a three stage process that results with a high degree of accuracy in the discrimination of individual M. tuberculata specimens by sex on the basis of continuous morphological characters: (1) measurement of many aspects of shell morphology of individuals of known sex, and stepwise discrimination to discover which of the variables, if any, contribute to the morphometric differentiation of males from females (one time only, for the species); (2) use of these selected variables in a clustering procedure to make a preliminary assignment of each specimen to sex; (3) use of cluster assignments in a discrimination procedure to optimally predict sex. For species that exhibit morphometric differences between two groups, and for which continuous morphometric variation precludes the a priori recognition of discrete clusters, this sequential procedure may be of broad applicability. These objective methods may be applied to the discrimination within any set of specimens for which the hypothesis of two, and only two, constituent groups may be entertained.  相似文献

We analyzed 4 meristic and 32 morphometric cranial traits of 612 adult specimens of spotted dolphins ( Stenella attenuata ) from the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean for sexual dimorphism. Eleven 5" latitude/longitude blocks with five or more of each sex were assessed with a two-way ANOVA for sex and geographic differences. Interaction between these two factors was found for six measurements, suggesting that the degree of sexual dimorphism varies geographically for a few characters (although in no discernible geographic pattern). Sexual dimorphism was demonstrated for 23 of the 36 characters, with differences ranging from 0.00 to 5.88 percent. Females characteristically had a longer rostrum, while males generally had larger skulls overall. In terms of number of characters, the extent of sexual dimorphism demonstrated for skulls of spotted dolphins goes considerably beyond that shown for any other small delphine. A discriminant function involving a combination of 10 characters enabled us to identify correctly the sex of more than 75 percent of the specimens. A procedure for correcting specimen measurements is outlined that would enable an investigator to combine male and female specimens in geographic variation studies. A term (zwitter) is proposed for use when referring to specimens where measurements have been corrected to take into account differences between the sexes.  相似文献

Morphometric analyses were carried out for 14 cave dwelling populations of Dolichopoda (Orthoptera, Rhaphidophoridae) from peninsular Italy belonging to the laetitiae-geniculata complex. The selected set of variables includes linear measures of body parts and appendages whose variation is expected to be adaptive and to reflect the degree of specialization to the cave environment.
Inter-population morphometric variation was compared with the patterns of allozyme variation, investigated electrophoretically in a previous paper, by means of ordination and classification multivariate analyses. Results from this comparison reject the hypothesis of parallel geographic variation of morphometric indices and allele frequencies, revealing independent trends for the two sets of characters.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether a logistic regression model for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) could be developed. Forty-eight variables were initially identified, for the 28 CTS and 34 non-CTS subjects, including 28 measures of nerve function, 6 anatomical measurements, 8 variables relating to disease symptoms, and 6 variables relating to physical attributes. An a priori clustering procedure was used to establish groups for the principal components analyses. The first principal component of each cluster was then used in a backward, stepwise logistic regression analysis. The best combination of candidate variables, as identified by the regression equation, was Raynaud's symptoms and median nerve motor function. The results of this study indicate that a model for CTS can be generated from a set of variables and that a linear combination of variables representing nerve function is closely associated with conduction decrements resulting from CTS.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken with the objective to investigate the intraspecific variation of Channa punctatus on the basis of morphometric characters using the truss network system that was constructed from the fish body. Fish samples were collected from the Narora (n = 62) and Kanpur sites (n = 46) of the Ganga River, the Firozabad site in the Yamuna River (n = 66) and at the Lucknow site of the Gomti River (n = 60). Data were subjected to principal component analysis, discriminant function analysis and univariate analysis of variance. The first principal component (PC I) analysis explained 47.75% of total variation while PC II and PC III explained 8.18 and 7.48%, respectively. The step‐wise discriminant function analysis retained seven variables that significantly discriminated the populations. Using these variables 81.85% of the original groups were classified into their correct samples. Misclassification was higher for the samples from Ganga River (19.6% at the Kanpur site and 19.4% for the Narora site). Of the total 27 transformed morphometric measurements, 23 exhibited significant differences among the populations. These findings indicate the presence of different stocks of fish from the three rivers.  相似文献

Daviesia ulicifolia is a widespread species that exhibits complex variation throughout its range. Using ordination and cluster analysis of morphometric characters we resolved ten terminal taxa for phylogenetic analysis. A data set including these and five closely related species was coded for a combination of morphometric and qualitative characters and analysed using parsimony. This revealed thatD. ulicifolia is paraphyletic by inclusion ofD. acicularis, D. arenaria andD. microcarpa. One terminal cluster is more similar to an outgroup species (D. arthropoda) than toD. ulicifolia and should be treated as a new species. Given recent theoretical and empirical studies showing paraphyly to be both expected and observed at species level, we propose that all existing species in this group continue to be recognised taxonomically. We suggest subdividingD. ulicifolia into several subspecies.  相似文献

Variable characters are ubiquitous in hominoid systematics and present a number of unique problems for phylogenetic analyses that include extinct taxa. As yet, however, few studies have quantified ranges of variation in complex morphometric characters within extant taxa and then used those data to assess the consistency with which discrete character states can be applied to poorly represented fossil species. In this study, ranges of intrageneric morphometric variation in the shape of the hominoid orbital aperture are estimated using exact randomization of average pairwise taxonomic distances (ATDs) derived from size-adjusted centroid, height-width, and elliptic Fourier (EF) variables. Using both centroid and height-width variables, 19 of the 21 possible ATDs between individuals representing seven extinct catarrhine taxa (Aegyptopithecus, Afropithecus, Ankarapithecus, Ouranopithecus, Paranthropus, Sivapithecus and Turkanapithecus) can be observed within a single extant hominoid subspecies, although generally with low probabilities. A resampling study is employed as a means for gauging the effect that this intrataxonomic variation may have on the consistency with which discrete orbital shape character states can be delimited given the small sample sizes available for most Miocene catarrhine taxa preserving this feature (i.e., n=1). For each type of morphometric variable, 100 cluster (UPGMA) analyses of pairwise ATDs are performed in which a single individual is randomly selected from each hominoid genus and analyzed alongside known extinct taxa; consensus trees are computed in order to obtain the frequencies with which different shape clusters appeared in each of the three analyses. The two major clusters appearing most frequently in all three consensus trees are found in only 57% (centroid variables), 49% (height-width variables), and 36% (EF variables) of these trees. If ranges of variation within represented extinct taxa could also be estimated, these frequencies would certainly be far lower. Hominoids clearly exhibit considerable intrageneric, intraspecific, and even intrasubspecific variation in orbit shape, and substantial morphometric overlap exists between taxa; consequently, discrete character states delimiting these patterns of continuous variation are likely to be highly unreliable in phylogenetic analyses of living and extinct species, particularly as the number of terminal taxa increases. Morphological phylogenetic studies of extant catarrhines that assess the effect of different methods (e.g., use of objective a priori weighting or frequency coding of variable characters, inclusion vs. exclusion of variable characters, use of specific vs. supraspecific terminal taxa) on phylogenetic accuracy may help to improve the techniques that systematists employ to make phylogenetic inferences about extinct taxa.  相似文献

In this study the intraspecific variation of wild Labeo rohita was investigated on the basis of morphometric characters using the truss network system constructed from the fish body. Altogether 435 fish samples were collected from six drainages of the Ganga basin in India. Data were subjected to principal component analysis, discriminant function analysis and univariate analysis of variance. The first principal component (PC1) explained 47.88% of the total variation, while PC2 and PC3 explained 17.22 and 8.33%, respectively. The step‐wise discriminant function analysis retained three variables that significantly discriminated the populations. Using these variables, 62.3% of the original groups were classified into their correct samples and 53.1% of the cross‐validated groups omitting one procedure were classified into their correct samples. Misclassification was higher for samples from the River Gomti (28.6%). Of the total of 31 transformed truss measurements, 30 exhibited significant differences among populations. These findings indicate the presence of six different stocks of L. rohita in the Ganga basin.  相似文献

Scalation, colour pattern, linear and geometric morphometrics were used to quantify geographical differentiation in the long-nosed snake, Rhinocheilus lecontei, and to test the hypothesis that all four subspecies are morphologically distinct. Also investigated were potential associations between morphological (scalation, colour pattern, linear measurements) and environmental variables (climate, vegetation, soil). Sexual dimorphism was weakest for geometric and strongest for linear morphometric variables. Morphological variables differed widely in their ability to differentiate subspecies. Linear morphometric variables achieved the most statistically significant pairwise Mahalanobis distances between subspecies, while geometric morphometrics largely failed to differentiate them. Colour pattern showed the strongest and linear morphometrics the weakest correlation with environment. Several characters varied continuously along latitudinal or longitudinal gradients, such that, in some cases, the clines for closely related traits were discordant. No one subspecies was consistently divergent in all analyses, leading to the conclusion that the three mainland subspecies are not sufficiently distinct to warrant separate subspecies status. The island subspecies, though not always statistically distinct, is geographically separate from other populations and differs in characters related to size. Given the small number of specimens available, a decision regarding its taxonomic status (i.e. elevation to species level) is best deferred until additional specimens can be examined and data on molecular variation can be analysed.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 83 , 65–85.  相似文献

The spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata), a species commonly associated with the tuna fishery, is widely distributed in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ETP). Geographic patterns in morphological characteristics of this dolphin were evaluated for 36 skull measurements of 574 museum specimens allocated to 5° latitude-longitude blocks. A strong subdivision between northern and southern offshore populations was demonstrated using principal components, canonical variates and cluster (UPGMA and function-point) analyses of block means derived from standardized, sex-adjusted measurements. Classification functions derived from a stepwise multiple discriminant analysis correctly identified more than 87 percent of the specimens as being from either a northern or southern locality. These results support recognition of southern spotted dolphins as a separate management stock. Dolphins from a sample representing a far-western locality show similarities with those from the south. Patterns of geographic variation in morphology were evaluated using Mantel tests and matrix correlations; 17 of the 36 characters showed regional patterning and 18 exhibited local patterning. Morphological trends were also assessed with respect to 14 oceanographic measures that characterize environmental variability in the ETP. In general, clinal variation in morphology mirrors a north-south trend found in several environmental variables. Overall, the most striking associations between morphological and environmental variables involved Solar Insolation (Jan.). Sea surface temperatures also exhibited a strong association with morphological variables; the highest correspondence was found between width of the temporal fossa and sea surface temperature in July. In addition, the thickness of the oxygen minimum layer exhibited a pattern of variation that was statistically associated with 58 percent of the skull characters. The geographic patterns found for cranial morphology and environmental measures are strongly clinal and in general congruent, suggesting that oceanographic conditions in part determine trends in morphological characteristics of spotted dolphins.  相似文献

Thirty populations of potato cyst nematode (Globodera spp.) from the Island of Tenerife and two populations from the UK were assessed for several morphometric and non-morphometric characters thought to discriminate between the species G. rostochiensis and G. pallida. Also 200 cysts from each population were analysed by isoelectric focusing of soluble proteins. Correlation analysis, analysis of variance and principal component analysis were used to investigate relationships between the morphometric characters, how the relationships varied between species and between populations, and which characters were most useful for discriminating between species. The two species differed significantly for each of the four morphometric characters: stylet length, fenestra length, anus-fenestra distance and the number of ridges. The stylet length and fenestra length also showed differences between populations of G. rostochiensis while stylet length and number of ridges showed differences between populations of C. pallida. In general, populations of G. pallida showed greater variation than populations of C. rostochiensis. Principal component analysis of the population means indicated that over 73% of the variation in the characters could be explained by the contrast of stylet and fenestra lengths against the anus-fenestra distance and number of ridges. A plot of the first two principal components separated the two species. Stepwise discriminant analysis provided a linear combination of these four variables which discriminated between the species. Stylet length was found to be the most useful characteristic for distinguishing the species whilst anus-fenestra distance was the least useful.  相似文献

Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses have been performed on 19 morphometric variables of adult male specimens belonging to three genetically identified species within Pseudoterranova decipiens (Nematoda: Ascaridida) parasitic in the digestive tract of seals. Two morphometric keys are proposed for the identification of the three species. One key, which uses two variables, determines a frequency of error of 3.8% (3/79). The second key, which uses two canonical discriminant functions based on seven variables previously selected with a stepwise procedure, gives 100% (76/76) accurate classification.  相似文献

A morphometric study of the Malaneese - an isolated community living in the midst of Himalayas in district Kullu, Himachal Pradesh - is undertaken with a view to tracing their ethnic relationship with some neighbouring populations viz. Kinnauras, Kulwis and Lahulies, with whom they share some linguistic and cultural experiences. The data consist of 23 anthropometric variables which include 7 linear body measurements, 6 body diameters and circumferences and 10 head and face measurements. The Mahalanobis generalized distance statistics (D2) was used as the primary basis of analysis. The results show that Malaneese are a distinct population clearly distinguishable from the neighbouring populations of Himachal Pradesh. The distance statistics reveal closer morphometric affinity of Malaneese with the Kulwis and Kinnauras than with Lahulies. The lexicostatistical data together with historical records of the movement of people in this region lend support to the above findings.  相似文献

Phenotypic variation in hybridizing species or subspecies is a prerequisite for allowing conservation ecologists and wildlife managers to identify parental populations and their hybrids in the field. We assessed the reliability of a set of eight morphological (body size and pelage characters) and four anatomical criteria (skull and intestine morphometric measurements) to distinguish between 302 French specimens classified as wildcat, domestic cat or hybrid on the basis of a Bayesian analysis (STRUCTURE) of their multilocus microsatellite genotypes. This aim was achieved by performing a set of multivariate analyses on morphological, anatomical and genetic data sets (Hill and Smith's analysis, co‐inertia analysis and discriminant analysis of principal components). Wildcats and domestic cats were very satisfactorily distinguished, even when using simple non‐invasive morphological criteria easily usable in the field like the morphology of the tail, dorsal line or flank stripes. Using anatomical instead of morphological characters slightly increased the discriminating power. Many more difficulties arose when we tried to distinguish hybrid specimens from both wildcat and domestic ones. Anatomical characters performed better than morphological ones in recognizing hybrids, but the assignment success rate remained very low, about 31.6% and 1.5%, respectively. Overall, the most discriminating characters were two continuous, derived anatomical characters: the cranial index followed by the intestinal index. Classification of specimens in three classes based on their microsatellite genotypes appeared to be inadequate for identifying hybrid specimens, as hybrid specimens seemed to be distributed along an anatomical continuum. With this observation in mind, we assessed the linear relationships between a proxy of the individual level of hybridization (qik) and the cranial and intestinal indices, respectively. Both relationships were highly significant. The greatest correlation was found with the cranial index (R² = 60.4%). Altogether, our results suggest that future work should be geared towards enhancing the measure of hybridization using more discriminating molecular markers and improving morphometric skull measurements through the use of modern geometric morphometric methods, using landmarks rather than skull dimension.  相似文献

We investigated spatial variations in the morphometric characteristics (total length of body, lengths of cephalothorax, abdomen and antennules, and their relative proportions) of Pseudocalanus minutus, an abundant copepod species across the Barents Sea in August–September 2007. Females were found to have higher values for the measured parameters than males. The average absolute morphometric characters of both sexes increased from the south to the north. In most cases, parameters were similar in the southern, central, and eastern regions delineated by cluster analyses of oceanographic variables. The morphometric characteristics were strongly correlated with environmental variables in both males and females. Multiple regression analysis showed that temperature together with salinity explained 72–85% (in females) and 38–91% (in males) of the total variations in the log10‐transformed morphometric parameters. According to principal component analysis and discriminant function analysis, two distinct groups could be separated in the Barents Sea. The first group included the copepods from the northern region; the other included populations from the southern, central, and eastern regions. The observed morphological variation can be interpreted as geographical variation connected with hydrological variability.  相似文献

Geometric and traditional morphometric approaches are tested to describe and reveal taxonomic characters and character states in variation of shape and size of idiosoma morphology in the Arrenuridae. Patterns of variation of idiosoma and glandularia features of males from 11 Mexican species of Arrenurus (Megaluracarus) and two species of subgenus Dadayella were explored with five landmark configurations and three sets of interlandmark distances. Separate principal component analyses (PCA) and canonical variate analyses (CVA) were performed for each data set. The eight multivariate analyses of variance among 13 a priori groups (species) detected significantly different morphometric variants, which were interpreted as different taxonomic character states. Patterns of character state similarity among species were examined with unweighted‐pair grouping method using averages (UPGMA) cluster analyses on Mahalanobis distances. Analyses of five landmark configurations revealed important taxonomical variation in the anterior idiosoma outline (10 character states), the outline of the posterior region or cauda (13 states), the distribution of postocularia, and the second and third pairs of dorsoglandularia (nine states), the fourth pair of dorsoglandularia (three states), and ventroglandularia on the posterior side of idiosoma (nine character states). Multivariate analyses of three sets of distance measurements also resulted in the detection of potential taxonomic characters related to idiosoma size (12 character states), postocularia and dorsoglandularia (13 states), and ventroglandularia (nine character states). Morphometric analyses of distances and shapes provide a formal basis for the interpretation of taxonomic characters, and for the discovery of character states. These characters should be investigated further in a wider sample of species for the phylogenetic systematics of these water mites. In the meantime, idiosoma regions and structures were tested for congruence in a phylogenetic analysis, and were proposed as homologous among the species sampled.  相似文献
