The freshwater clam Corbicula australis is an important component of the macrobiota of the river systems of southeast Australia. Reproduction of two populations of this clam in the Nepean River at Douglas Park and Menangle was investigated to document the gametogenic cycle, larval morphology and to determine when they incubate embryos. C. australis is a simultaneous hermaphrodite and broods its young in the inner demibranchs. The gonads are ovotestes with oogenic and spermatogenic regions in each ascinus. The sperm are biflagellate, a condition unique in the Bivalvia to clonal corbiculids. Gametogenesis was continuous and did not exhibit a seasonal pattern. In contrast, spawning and incubation of embryos was limited to the warmer months of the year. Embryos were present in the gills from October to May. C. australis develops through a modified veliger larva with a vestigially ciliated velum which is not used for swimming or particle capture. The velum is covered by microvilli and it is suggested that the velar epithelium may be specialised for nutrient uptake in the marsupial environment. C. australis produces several clutches each year and the young are released as advanced juveniles with a well-developed foot. Reproductive output differed between the two populations. This was in part due to the larger size of the clams from Menangle and may also reflect the enhanced productivity at this site. The suite of life history traits exhibited by C. australis: hermaphroditism, potential for self-fertilization/androgenesis, brooding progeny to the crawl-away juvenile stage and a high reproductive output, provide for rapid colonization and population growth in this clam which typically inhabits disturbance prone sandy lotic habitats.  相似文献

Among the asexual reproductive modes, androgenesis is probably one of the most astonishing and least studied mechanisms. In this 'paternal monopolization', the maternal nuclear genome fails to participate in zygote development and offspring are paternal nuclear clones. Obligate androgenesis is known in only a few organisms, including multiple species of clam in the genus Corbicula. Corbicula is a good system to review the evolutionary consequences of this 'all-male asexuality' because the cytological mechanisms of androgenetic reproduction have been described. In Corbicula, sperm are unreduced and, after fertilization, the maternal nuclear chromosomes are extruded as two polar bodies. Hermaphroditic lineages of Corbicula have a worldwide distribution and seem to reproduce through androgenesis, whereas their sexual relatives have restricted ranges. The invasive success of these androgenetic Corbicula lineages may be linked to their asexual mode of reproduction. We review the phenomenon of androgenesis, focusing on evolutionary perspectives, using the genus Corbicula as an exemplar system.  相似文献

The fanged frogs of South East Asia (50 species) show remarkable variation in body size, reproductive mode and sexual dimorphism. This study examines the importance of a specialized, primitive trait, relative fang size, in contributing to this diversity. Relatively small fang size is found to have a significant association with the evolution of small body size, terrestrial reproductive modes, and sexual dimorphism where females are larger than males. These results support the idea of historical contingency or that prior historical events can exert a significant influence on subsequent patterns of evolutionary change.  相似文献

Reliable markers are needed to identify the lineages in the invasive clam genus Corbicula. Previous studies have demonstrated that mitochondrial (mt) DNA poorly resolves Corbicula phylogeny, owing to its androgenetic reproductive mode. Moreover, hybridization and mitochondrial/nuclear mismatches occur. We developed the first eleven polymorphic markers to detect these phenomena and to investigate the nuclear identity of Corbicula populations. These microsatellite loci revealed three main lineages in Western Europe. One locus allowed rapid discrimination of these three lineages on agarose gel, saving time and money. Moreover, the eleven markers were successfully cross-amplified in the invasive Corbicula lineages found in North America.  相似文献

Abstract.— A persistent question in the evolution of life histories is the fitness trade-off between reproducing only once (semelparity) in a lifetime or reproducing repeated times in different seasons (iteroparity). The problem can be formulated into a research agenda by assuming that one reproductive strategy is resident (has already evolved) and by asking whether invasion (evolution) of an alternative reproductive strategy is possible. For a spatially nonstructured system, Bulmer (1994) derived the relationship v + PA < 1 (PA is adult survival; vbs and bs are offspring numbers for iteroparous and semelparous breeding strategies, respectively) at which semelparous population cannot be invaded by an iteroparous mutant. When the inequality is changed to v + PA > 1, invasion of a semelparous mutant is not possible. From the inequalities, it is easy to see that possibilities for evolutionary establishment of a novel reproductive strategy are rather narrow. We extended the evolutionary scenario into a spatially structured system with dispersal linkage among the subunits. In this domain, a rare reproductive strategy can easily invade a population dominated by a resident reproductive strategy. The parameter space enabling invasion is far more generous with spatially structured evolutionary scenarios than in a spatially nonstructured system.  相似文献

Abstract.— We employ a simple model to show that social selection can lead to prezygotic reproductive isolation. The evolution of social discrimination causes the congealing of phenotypically similar individuals into different, spatially distinct tribes. However, tribal formation is only obtained for certain types of social behavior: altruistic and selfish acts can produce tribes, whereas spiteful and mutualistic behaviors never do. Moreover, reduced hybrid fitness at tribal borders leads to the selection of mating preferences, which then spread to the core areas of the respective tribes. Unlike models of resource competition, our model generates reproductive isolation in an ecologically homogeneous environment. We elaborate on how altruistic acts can lead to reproductive isolation, but also predict that certain types of competition can lead to the speciation effect. Our theory provides a framework for how individual-level interactions mold lineage diversification, with parapatric speciation as a possible end product.  相似文献

Abstract.— There has been wide disagreement as to whether sperm competition among animals can produce a soldier class of sperm to fight against other males. Utilizing mathematical models, we analyze the appropriate conditions for the evolution and maintenance of a soldier sperm class. We conclude that: (1) soldier sperm evolve even if one soldier sperm can kill or block less than one competing sperm; (2) soldier sperm evolve faster when there is a large variance in the number of competing sperm; (3) soldier ratio increases until reproductive sperm are too scarce to fertilize all ova or a sperm intensely refuses to become a soldier; and (4) soldier sperm are more likely to be smaller than reproductive sperm. Our models suggest that the conditions for the evolution of a soldier sperm class are not stringent.  相似文献

Drosophila meridionalis is a cactus-breeding species with a wide distribution in South America. Most populations of this species are geographically isolated, what provides a promising scenario for studying evolution. Former studies of this species revealed a remarkable karyotypic variation among its populations. Up to six distinct metaphase chromosomes were described, showing that this species is polymorphic at least at the chromosomal level. In order to elucidate the taxonomic status of populations showing different metaphase chromosomes, we analyzed the courtship song of five populations of D. meridionalis in South and Southeastern Brazil. In addition, we analyzed the metaphase chromosomes of each population. Our results show that, despite the two karyotype observed, most courtship song parameters did not vary among the populations. Altogether, our results suggest that D. meridionalis from South and Southeastern Brazil represents one species with an inter-population chromosomal variability.  相似文献

Dasyurid marsupials show a remarkable diversity of reproductive patterns ranging from aseasonal polyoestry to restricted annual breeding in which males synchronously die after a brief mating season. Previous studies have categorized dasyurid reproduction into six strategies, defined on the basis of five life-history characters. We provide an up-to-date summary of reproductive traits in dasyurid species and examine the evolution of these characters on a phylogeny for the family recently obtained from DNA sequence data. Our results suggest that reproductive evolution in modern dasyurids is characterized by a basal separation of subfamily lineages employing Strategy II (monoestrous females, restricted breeding season, 11 months to maturity; Dasyurinae) and Strategy V (polyoestrous females, extended breeding season, 8–11 months to maturity; Sminthopsinae). Strategies I (male die-off) and III (facultative polyoestry) appear to have arisen several times from Strategy II or V ancestors, and Strategy IV appears to have arisen within Sminthopsis from a Strategy V ancestor. Strategy VI (aseasonal breeding) has arisen independently in each of the four major dasyurid lineages (tribes), and is highly (but not perfectly) correlated with New Guinean endemism. This scenario is not strongly affected if reproductive characters are optimized on an alternative phylogeny more consistent with morphology-based opinions on species relationships. When evaluated in light of current habitat associations and geographic distributions, the reproductive data suggest that the Miocene diversification of modern dasyurids may have been correlated with the invasion of dry forest or woodland habitats.  相似文献

The reproductive systems of crabs reveal characters of considerable importance for the understanding of brachyuran phylogeny and evolution. The Dorippoidea show several plesiomorphic characters within Eubrachyura and similarities to podotreme crabs. Hence, they are often considered as an early diverging lineage, sometimes even as the sister group to all remaining eubrachyurans. Due to their role as prime candidates for putative plesiomorphic characters of the reproductive system of the Eubrachyura, we compared the morphology of the vaginae, seminal receptacles, and ovaries of three dorippid species using histological methods, micro‐computed tomography, and 3‐D reconstructions. Despite the putative phylogenetic position of dorippids, the female reproductive system shows features that are regarded as derived characters in eubrachyurans, including a concave vagina and a ventral‐type seminal receptacle. In contrast to other eubrachyurans, the oviduct does not enter the seminal receptacle directly but through specific cuticular valves. The female reproductive systems of Dorippe sinica and Dorippe quadridens are remarkable in further aspects. The seminal receptacles of both species are completely cuticle‐lined and have accessory sperm storage structures, the bursae. Our findings on the morphology of the female reproductive system of dorippids with its unique combination of basal, derived, and new characters challenges the prevailing hypothesis on the evolution of sperm storage organs in Eubrachyura.  相似文献

Abstract.— Allocation to sexual reproduction is an important life-history trait in clonal plants. Different selection pressures between competitive and competition-free environments are likely to result in the evolution of specialized genotypes and to maintain genetic variation in reproductive allocation. Moreover, selection may also result in the evolution of plastic allocation strategies. The necessary prerequisite for evolution, heritable genetic variation, can best be studied with selection experiments. Starting from a base population of 102 replicated genotypes of the clonal herb Ranunculus reptans , we imposed selection on the proportion of flowering rosettes in the absence of competition (base population: mean = 0.391, broad-sense heritability = 0.307). We also selected on the plasticity in this trait in response to competition with a naturally coexisting grass in a parallel experiment (base population: 14% lower mean in the presence of competition, broad-sense heritability = 0.072). After two generations of bidirectional selection, the proportion of flowering rosettes was 26% higher in the high line than in the low line (realized heritability ± SE = 0.205 ± 0.017). Moreover, genotypes of the high line had 11% fewer carpels per flower, a 22% lower proportion of rooted rosettes, and a 39% smaller average distance between rosettes within a clone. In the second experiment, we found no significant responses to selection for high and low plasticity in the proportion of flowering rosettes (realized heritability ± SE =–0.002 ± 0.013). Our study indicates a high heritability and potential for further evolution of the proportion of flowering rosettes in R. reptans , but not for its plasticity, which may have been fixed by past evolution at its current level. Moreover, our results demonstrate strong genetic correlations between allocation to sexual reproduction and other clonal life-history characteristics.  相似文献

Morphological and life-history characters were determined for a series of six increasingly cavernicolous species of eastern United States Ptomaphagus beetles. Contrary to expectations, dimensions of only some adult structural characters uniformly covary as an overall measure of evolutionary adaptation for cave life. Adult reproductive characters that show adaptation for cave life are loss of reproductive seasonality and production of fewer and larger eggs. Significant change in pre-imaginal life-cycle stages was not found. This is in contrast to cavernicolous bathysciine beetles of Europe which show remarkable adaptive trends in pre-imaginal stages, but larval adaptations are not strongly coevolved with adult cave-adaptive characters. This suggests that evolution of cave adaptation in adult endopterygote insects occurs before and independently from that in larvae.  相似文献

The pea clams Sphaeriidae represent a major molluscan freshwater radiation with cosmopolitan distribution in all kinds of lotic and lentic habitats. Their phylogenetic relationships are still controversial, with comprehensive taxonomic sampling and examination of morphological characters still challenging. Here, based on rare and rediscovered original material, we study in detail the anatomy and aspects of brood protection of the African Pisidium reticulatum Kuiper, 1966. Representing the monotypic subgenus Parapisidium Kuiper, 1966, this species is characterized by its peculiar combination of shell and anatomical features of potentially high phylogenetic relevance. While similar to other congeners in several anatomical characters (e.g. reduction of inhalant siphon and descending lamella of outer demibranch, simplified structure of intestine coil and nephridium), P. reticulatum differs from other Pisidium species in retaining both pairs of retractor muscles of the inhalant siphon, and particularly in its peculiar mode of brooding. The yolky eggs are relatively large (160–170 μm in diameter) and are incubated in the gill, albeit in the absence of the formation of brood pouches. During later stages of incubation the larvae are surrounded by large cells similar to nourishing cells in other sphaeriids and probably with similar function. This unique combination of reproductive features is hypothesized to represent an intermediate stage between the typical ovoviviparity of Euperidae and euviviparity (i.e. nourishment by the parent animal) as found exclusively in Sphaeriidae, the latter being characterized by the possession of closed brood pouches. Phylogenetic analyses based on a comprehensive set of morphological characters reveal Parapisidium as the most basal lineage within a clade Pisidium. Evaluating the phylogenetic reconstructions based also on available molecular data for Sphaeriidae, we discuss alternative scenaria of (parallel) evolution of brood pouches and viviparity in this group.  相似文献

研究以线粒体细胞色素氧化酶Ⅰ(COⅠ) 部分序列(614 bp)为分子标记, 对捞刀河浏阳段河蚬Corbicula fluminea (n=40)的种群遗传多样性进行评价, 并分别从性腺组织学和精子形态学两方面分析其生殖特征, 以期丰富河蚬的繁殖生物学信息, 为开展其人工繁殖及资源保护提供参考。结果显示, 40条河蚬COⅠ基因序列共检出4种单倍型, 17个变异位点, 平均单倍型多样性、平均核苷酸多样性和平均核苷酸差异数分别为 0.664±0.042、0.014±0.006和8.595。捞刀河浏阳段河蚬存在雌雄同体和雌雄异体2种性别系统, 雌雄同体、雄性和雌性的性比约为6﹕3﹕1。雌雄同体个体生殖滤泡存在滤泡混合型和滤泡并存型2种类型。23个雌雄同体和8个雄性个体的精子均为双鞭毛。结果表明, 捞刀河浏阳段河蚬种群的遗传多样性相对较低, 生殖方式多样且以雄核生殖为主。  相似文献

This study establishes the reproductive cycle, batch fecundity and oocyte diameter of a diadromic population of the puyen, Galaxias maculatus, in the Río Ovando, Tierra del Fuego, (54°S), at the southernmost limit of its distribution. Given the short ‘favourable season’ in relation to other populations of the species (in terms of temperature, photoperiod and food availability), the study also explores the trade‐offs between feeding and oocyte production and between phases of growth and reproduction. The reproductive cycle was analyzed by the monthly evolution of the proportion of gonadal maturity stages (determined from microscopic examination of the gonads). Oocytes were measured using a micrometric ocular scale and classified by diameter and morphological characteristics; absolute fecundity was established as the total number of hydrated oocytes per ovary. The studied population exhibits a repetitive spawning strategy, given the coexistence of post‐ovullatory follicles and hydrated oocytes in histological sections and the presence in ripe ovaries of an intermediate cohort of yolked oocytes ready for hydration. Individual fecundity is lower (1422 ± 422 oocytes/ovary) than in other puyen populations, but the egg production increases through individual repetitive spawnings during the protracted spawning period (from October to February). Females attain larger sizes than those of other South American populations (the largest female reaching 115 mm total length), maximizing its potential fecundity. The present paper contributes to the knowledge of the variability of reproductive traits of G. maculatus in relation to diadromic populations, given that the bulk of information in South America refers to landlocked populations.  相似文献

Arginine kinase (AK) from the clam Corbicula japonica is a unique enzyme in that it has an unusual two-domain structure with molecular mass of 80 kDa. It lacks two functionally important amino acid residues, Asp-62 and Arg-193, which are conserved in other 40 kDa AKs and are assumed to be key residues for stabilizing the substrate-bound structure. K m arg and Vmax values for the recombinant two-domain AK were determined. These values were close to those of usual 40 kDa AKs, although Corbicula AK lacks the functionally important Asp-62 and Arg-193. Domain 2 of Corbicula AK was separated from the two-domain enzyme and was expressed in Escherichia coli. Domain 2 still exhibited activity. However, kinetic parameters for domain 2 appeared to be slightly, but significantly, different from those of two-domain AK. Thus, it is likely that the formation of the contiguous dimer alters the kinetic properties of its constituent domains significantly. Comparison of K d arg and K m arg for two-domain AK and its domain 2 showed that the affinity of the enzyme for arginine is greater in the presence of substrate ATP than in its absence. Presumably this difference is correlated with the large structural differences in the enzyme in the presence or absence of substrate, namely open and closed structures. We expressed three mutants of Corbicula AK domain 2 (His-60 to Gly or Arg, Asp-197 to Gly), and determined their K m arg and Vmax values. The affinity for the substrate arginine in mutant enzymes was reduced considerably, accompanied by a decrease in Vmax. These results suggest that His-60 and Asp-197 affect the substrate binding system, and are consistent with the hypothesis that a hydrogen bond is formed between His-60 and Asp-197 in Corbicula AK as a substitute for the Asp-62 and Arg-193 bond in normal AKs.  相似文献

Summary The Endosperm Balance Number (EBN) hypothesis can explain to a considerable degree the crossability between tuber-bearing Solanum species. It has been shown to be genetically controlled and is dosage dependent. There is a good correlation between EBN and the postulated evolution and present taxonomy of potatoes. The primitive white stellate-flowered species from Mexico are 1EBN, and this condition is also found in species from South America with flowers of the same colour and shape. The evolution of a rotate corolla seems to be correlated with 2EBN. It is postulated that the 2EBN state arose as a reproductive isolating mechanism in South America. The taxonomic and evolutionary implications of the EBN hypothesis are discussed.  相似文献

研究以沅江常德段蚬Corbicula为例,采用线粒体COⅠ分子标记对其进行谱系构建,梳理谱系与形态、倍性、性别和遗传多样性之间的关系,以期为蚬属的系统分类和生殖特征研究提供理论参考。结果显示,99条COⅠ序列(526 bp)中存在12个单倍型,共有17个变异位点,单倍型多样性、核苷酸多样性和平均核苷酸差异数分别为0.599、0.01236和6.503。12个单倍型在系统进化树中被聚为独立的两支(谱系RA和RlcB),但谱系间壳长、壳高和壳宽没有显著差异(P>0.05)。99个样品中有二倍体50个、三倍体49个、雌雄同体71个、雌性21个、雄性7个。卡方检验发现,谱系与性别及倍性与性别之间均存在显著的相关性(P<0.05)。谱系RlcB的单倍型数、变异位点数、单倍型多样性、核苷酸多样和平均核苷酸变异数均高于谱系RA。结果表明,虽然形态、倍性、性别和遗传多样性在谱系RA和RlcB蚬之间存在一定的差异,但均不足以作为区分两个谱系的生物学特征,而不同谱系是否为不同的种还有待于进一步的证实。  相似文献

Abstract.— As the most extreme expression of apparent altruism in nature, eusociality has long posed a central paradox for behavioral and evolutionary ecology. Because eusociality has arisen rarely among animals, understanding the selective pressures important in early stages of its evolution remains elusive. Employing a historical approach to this problem, we used morphology and DNA sequences to reconstruct the phylogeny of 13 species of sponge-dwelling shrimps ( Synalpheus ) with colony organization ranging from asocial pair-bonding through eusociality. We then used phylogenetically independent contrasts to test whether sociality was associated with evidence of enhanced competitive ability, as suggested by hypotheses invoking an advantage of cooperation in crowded habitats. The molecular, morphological, and combined data each strongly supported three independent origins of monogynous, multigenerational (eusocial) colony organization within this genus. Phylogenetically independent contrasts confirmed that highly social taxa, with strong reproductive skew, have significantly higher relative abundance within the host sponge than do less social taxa, a result that was robust to uncertainty in tree topology and varying models of character change. A similar tendency for highly social species to share their sponge with fewer congener species was suggestive, but not significant. Because unoccupied habitat appears to be limiting for many sponge-dwelling shrimp species, these data are consistent with hypotheses that cooperative social groups enjoy a competitive advantage over less organized groups or individuals, where independent establishment is difficult, and that enemy pressure is of central importance in the evolution of animal sociality.  相似文献
