Pigeons were trained in a concurrent chains procedure in which the terminal-link schedules in each session were either fixed-interval (FI) 10s FI 20s or FI 20s FI 10s, as determined by a pseudorandom binary series. The initial-link was a variable-interval (VI) 10-s schedule. Training continued until initial-link response allocation stabilized about midway through each session and was sensitive to the terminal-link immediacy ratio in that session. The initial-link schedule was then varied across sessions between VI 0.01 s and VI 30s according to an ascending and descending sequence. Initial-link response allocation was a bitonic function over the full range of durations. Preference for the FI 10-s terminal-link at first increased as programmed initial-link duration varied from 0.01 to 7.5s, and then decreased as initial-link duration increased to 30s. The bitonic function poses a potential challenge for existing models for steady-state choice, such as delay-reduction theory (DRT) [Fantino, E., 1969. Choice and rate of reinforcement. J. Exp. Anal. Behav. 12, 723-730], which predict a monotonic function. However, an extension of Grace and McLean's [Grace, R.C., McLean, A.P., 2006. Rapid acquisition in concurrent chains: evidence for a decision model. J. Exp. Anal. Behav. 85, 181-202] decision model predicted the bitonic function, and may ultimately provide an integrated account of choice in concurrent chains under both steady-state and dynamic conditions. 相似文献

Four pigeons responded in a concurrent-chains procedure in which terminal-link schedules were fixed-interval (FI) 10 s and FI 20 s. Across sessions, the location of the shorter terminal-link changed according to a pseudorandom binary sequence. Each session, the variable-interval initial-link schedule value was sampled from a uniform distribution that ranged from 0.01 to 30 s. On some terminal links, food was withheld to obtain measures of temporal control. Terminal-link delays determined choice (log initial-link response ratios) and timing (start and stop times on no-food trials) measures, which stabilized within the 1st half of each session. Preference for the shorter terminal-link delay was a monotonically decreasing function of initial-link duration. There was no evidence of control by initial-link durations from previous sessions. 相似文献

Previous studies with concurrent-chains procedures have shown that preference for a terminal-link signaling a higher reinforcement rate decreases as initial-link durations increase. Using a concurrent-chains procedure, the present experiment examined the effects of manipulating initial-link duration on preference and resistance to disruption with rats nose poking for different rates of food reinforcement in the terminal links. Consistent with previous findings, preference for a terminal link with a higher reinforcement rate decreased with longer initial links. Conversely, relative resistance to disruption in the terminal link with a higher reinforcement rate increased with longer initial links. These findings are counter to the prediction of behavioral momentum theory that preference and resistance to change should be positively related. 相似文献

Four pigeons responded in a concurrent-schedule procedure in which reinforcer rates and magnitudes changed unpredictably across sessions according to independent random series. Programmed relative reinforcement rates and magnitudes were always either 2:1 or 1:2. Pigeons' response allocation tended to stabilize within sessions and multiple regression analyses showed that it was determined by rates and magnitudes from the current session. Sensitivity coefficients were positive and statistically significant for current-session reinforcement and magnitude ratios. Although there were individual differences in sensitivity to rate and magnitude, their interaction was not significant across subjects. Rate and magnitude both controlled responding in single sessions and individual interreinforcer intervals. Analyses of responding within sessions showed that preference was more extreme when the richer rate and larger magnitude were associated with the same alternative than when they were associated with different alternatives. Overall, results support the concatenated generalized matching law's assumptions of additivity and independence as applied to choice in transition. 相似文献

In order to maximize their fitness under Local Mate Competition (LMC), arrhenotokous female wasps have to produce a precise
sex ratio when encountering hosts. Recent progress in the theory of hymenopterous parasitoid reproduction suggest that they
manage to do it by laying male and female eggs in a particular order and that such reproductive strategies are adaptive. Therefore,
the determinism of such sequential patterns would be regulated by genetic control on which natural selection could act. To
test this hypothesis, sequences of oviposition were recorded in a set ofTrichogramma brassicae Bezdenko (Hymenoptera; Trichogrammatidae) females and in their daughters by providing themEphestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera; Pyralidae) eggs.
In order to describe accurately sex pattern within these oviposition sequences, I present a joined non-parametric and multivariate
statistical method. It is shown thatT. brassicae females do not produce male and female eggs in random sequences. Moreover, the way they organize the sequence of the sexes
in their progeny seems to be under a strong genetic control. The evolutionary consequences of such results are discussed. 相似文献

In the present study, effects of d-amphetamine on sensitivity to reinforcement amount under concurrent schedules were examined using a rapid-acquisition procedure. Four pigeons key pecked under single concurrent variable-interval 30-s schedules of grain presentation. Two different reinforcer-amount ratios (7:1 and 1:7) changed across sessions according to a 31-step pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS). After at least four times through the PRBS, response ratios generally tracked the session-to-session changes in amount ratios; estimates of sensitivity ranged from 0.26 to 0.31 across the four pigeons. Effects of a range of doses of d-amphetamine (0.3-5.6 mg/kg) then were determined. For 3 of 4 pigeons, at least one dose, which did not dramatically alter overall response output or bias, decreased sensitivity to reinforcement amount. These results suggest that reducing sensitivity of responding to reinforcement amount may be one behavioral mechanism of stimulants, which may have implications for interpreting drug effects on self-control. 相似文献

Topical application of JHA to fifth instar nymphs of Oncopeltus fasciatus, immediately following ecdysis from the fourth instar, decreases the duration of the fifth instar by approximately 36 hr in addition to inducing a supernumerary larval moult. JHA appears to accelerate the time of subsequent ecdysis in two ways: first, the onset of ecdysone secretion is accelerated, and is accompanied by a similarly premature initiation of mitotic activity in epidermal cells. This is the classical prothoracicotropic action of JH. Second, the period between the onset of mitotic activity and the time of ecdysis itself is shortened. That is, once cellular activities associated with the moulting cycle are triggered by ecdysone, such activities are completed more rapidly in the presence of JHA. It appears that the larval-larval moult induced by JHA requires intrinsically less time to accomplish than a normal metamorphic moult. 相似文献

An important biological feature of cyclic populations of voles and lemmings is phase-related changes in average body mass, with adults in high-density phases being 20-30% heavier than those in low-density phases of a cycle. This observation, called the "Chitty effect," is considered to be a ubiquitous feature of cyclic populations. It has been argued that understanding the Chitty effect is fundamental to unraveling the enigma of population cycles. However, there exists no agreement among biologists regarding the causes of the Chitty effect. Here, I propose a simple hypothesis to explain the Chitty effect, based on phase-related, dynamic allocation of energy between reproductive and somatic effort. The essence of the hypothesis is that: (1) reproduction is suppressed in animals born or raised in the later part of the increase phase by environmental factors, including social influences; (2) suppression of reproduction limits the amount of energy that is diverted for reproductive effort, and forces a disproportionately greater amount of surplus power (the energy left after the energetic costs of standard and active metabolism are met) to be allocated for somatic effort; (3) the surplus energy, above and beyond what is required for routine biological activities, will allow continuous growth and deposition of additional body mass, which causes an increase in body mass; and (4) animals grow to a larger size as a population enters the peak density phase, causing an increase in the average body mass. The Chitty effect is predicted to be most pronounced at the late increase or peak phase of a population cycle. Possible causes of reproductive suppression include direct or indirect influences of the environmental factors. The Chitty effect may be a consequence, not a cause, of population cycles in small mammals. 相似文献

Four pigeons responded under a 7-component mixed schedule in which each component arranged a different left:right reinforcer ratio (27:1, 9:1, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, 1:9, 1:27). Components were unsignaled, and the order within each session was randomly determined. After extensive exposure to these contingencies, effects of a range of doses of d-amphetamine (0.3-5.6 mg/kg) on estimates of sensitivity to reinforcement at several levels of analysis were assessed. Under non-drug conditions, the structure of choice was similar to that previously reported under this procedure. That is, responding adjusted within components to the reinforcer ratio in effect (i.e., sensitivity estimates were higher in the 2nd than in the 1st half of components), and individual reinforcers produced “preference pulses” (i.e., each food presentation produced an immediate, local, shift in preference toward the response that just produced food). Although there was a general tendency for d-amphetamine to reduce overall sensitivity to reinforcement, the size of this effect and its reliability varied across pigeons. Further analysis, however, revealed that intermediate d-amphetamine doses consistently reduced sensitivity immediately following reinforcer presentations; that is, these doses consistently attenuated preference pulses. 相似文献

We compared the response of ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) to the creation of canopy gaps of different size (0.13,
0.26, and 0.50 ha) and age (1 and 7 years) in a bottomland hardwood forest (South Carolina, USA). Samples were collected four
times in 2001 by malaise and pitfall traps placed at the center and edge of each gap, and 50 m into the surrounding forest.
Species richness was higher at the center of young gaps than in old gaps or in the forest, but there was no statistical difference
in species richness between old gaps and the forests surrounding them. Carabid abundance followed the same trend, but only
with the exclusion of Semiardistomis viridis (Say), a very abundant species that differed in its response to gap age compared to most other species. The carabid assemblage
at the gap edge was very similar to that of the forest, and there appeared to be no distinct edge community. Species known
to occur in open or disturbed habitats were more abundant at the center of young gaps than at any other location. Generalist
species were relatively unaffected by the disturbance, but one species (Dicaelus dilatatus Say) was significantly less abundant at the centers of young gaps. Forest inhabiting species were less abundant at the centers
of old gaps than in the forest, but not in the centers of young gaps. Comparison of community similarity at various trapping
locations showed that communities at the centers of old and young gaps had the lowest similarity (46.5%). The community similarity
between young gap centers and nearby forest (49.1%) and old gap centers and nearby forest (50.0%) was similarly low. These
results show that while the abundance and richness of carabids in old gaps was similar to that of the surrounding forest,

Soil respiration is affected by vegetation and environmental conditions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of vegetation type on soil respiration, temperature and water content, and their correlations on a small scale. We measured soil respiration rate (Rs) over a 3-year period at biweekly intervals in three plots in the eastern Loess Plateau of China, with the same soil texture but different vegetation types: pine forest, grassland, and shrub land. Simultaneously, soil temperature (Ts) at 10 cm depth and soil water content (Ws) within 10 cm depth were measured. The seasonal course of Rs and Ts showed a similar temporal variation in the three plots, with higher values in summer and autumn and lower values in winter and spring. No significant differences (P>0.05) were found between plots, except for Ws. The mean cumulative release of CO2 efflux from March to December was 962.5, 1027.5, and 1166.5 g C m? 2 a? 1 for plots 1, 2, and 3, respectively, with no significant difference between plots. The fitted exponential equations of Rs versus Ts from the 3-year data-set were significant (P < 0.05) with an R2 of 0.72, 0.64, and 0.72 for plots 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The calculated Q10 from the parameters of the fitted equation was 3.57, 3.52, and 3.61, and the R10 was 2.36, 2.03, and 2.37 μmol CO2 m? 2 s? 1 for plots 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Compared with the Ts, the correlations between Rs and Ws were not significant for the three plots. However, if the Ts was above 10°C, then their correlation was significant, and Ws had an impact on Rs. Four combined regression equations including two variables of Ts and Ws could be well established to model correlations between Rs and both Ts and Ws. Our study demonstrated that the exponential and power model fitted best and no significant different correlations of combined equations existed between the three plots. These results show that vegetation type had little impact on Rs, Ts, Ws, and their correlations, as well as on related parameters such as Q10 and R10. Therefore, while doing Rs research in a horizontal patchy vegetation conditions on a small area, the sampling location of measurements should focus on vertical dominant vegetation and ignore patch vegetation so as to reduce field work load. 相似文献

物种丰富度的分布格局及其形成机制是生态学研究的热点。以往的研究主要描述丰富度的格局, 而对其形成机制研究较少, 且主要集中于探讨单个因子或过程的影响。物种丰富度同时受到多个因子和过程的综合作用, 面积、温度及物种分布区限制被认为是控制山地物种丰富度海拔格局的主要因素, 三者同时沿海拔梯度而变化, 同时作用于丰富度的海拔格局。幂函数种-面积关系(SAR)、生态学代谢理论(MTE)及中域效应假说(MDE)分别基于以上3个因素, 从机制上解释了物种丰富度 的海拔格局。探讨这些假说的相对影响对研究物种丰富度的大尺度格局及其形成机制具有重要意义。方差分离方法有利于分解不同因素的影响, 为此, 该文以秦岭太白山的植物物种丰富度为例, 采用方差分离和逐步回归方法, 分析了SAR、MTE及MDE对物种丰富度海拔格局的影响。结果表明, 太白山的植物物种丰富度沿海拔梯度呈单峰分布格局, 但丰富度峰值存在类群差异; 对太白山所有植物物种丰富度的垂直格局而言, SAR、MTE及MDE分别解释了其物种丰富度随海拔变化的66.4%、19.8%和37.9%, 共同解释了84.6%, 在消除其他因素的影响后, SAR和MTE的独立影响较高(分别为25.5%和17.7%), 而MDE的独立影响不显著; 分类群研究则发现, 苔藓植物丰富度的海拔格局主要受MDE的影响, 蕨类植物丰富度的海拔格局同时受到SAR、MTE以及MDE的影响, 而种子植物物种丰富度的海拔格局主要受SAR和MTE影响。 相似文献

Abstract: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats anesthetized with chloral hydrate and pentobarbital sodium were used as two different treatment groups. Conscious rats were used as a control group. By using baseline (precocaine) concentration as 100%, after cocaine administration (3.0 mg/kg i.v.), the maximal dopamine (DA) increase occurring at the first microdialysis collection period (20 min) in the medial prefrontal cortex was 299 ± 46% for the chloral hydrate group, 168 ± 12% for the pentobarbital sodium group, and 325 ± 23% for the conscious group. At the same time, norepinephrine (NA) increases reached a maximum and were 162 ± 20%, 100 ± 5%, and 141 ± 17%, respectively. The maximal changes of DA and NA in the chloral hydrate group and in the control group were both significantly higher than that in the pentobarbital sodium group. Meanwhile, the cocaine concentration was higher over a 100-min period of time in the chloral hydrate group when compared with the pentobarbital group and the control group. The peak cocaine concentration in dialysate occurred in the same time slot of maximal DA and NA responses, which were 0.65 ± 0.08, 0.30 ± 0.02, and 0.41 ± 0.05 µ M , respectively. Anesthetics suppress the pharmacologic response of neurons, which may explain the difference in catecholamine response between the pentobarbital sodium and the conscious groups. Conversely, because there was no significant difference in DA and NA response between the chloral hydrate group and the conscious group, it may possibly be due to the balancing effect between the higher existing cocaine concentration and the anesthetic suppression on pharmacological response of neurons in the chloral hydrate group. The effect of guide cannula implantation on the cocaine-induced catecholamine response was also evaluated. 相似文献

Many researchers have proposed that the stimulus of plant growth under elevated [CO2] observed in short-term experiments will be moderated in the longer term by a reduction in soil nitrogen (N) availability linked to decreased litter quality and/or increased litter production. However, these negative feedbacks may be offset to some extent by a stimulus in N fixation linked to increased root exudation. The aim of this modelling study is to examine how changes in litter quality/quantity and root exudation –- if they occur –- will affect the CO2 responses of net primary productivity and ecosystem carbon (C) storage on different timescales. We apply a model of C and N cycling in forest ecosystems (G’DAY) to stands of Norway spruce (Picea abies, L. Cast) growing at a N-limited experimental site at Flakaliden, Sweden, and draw the following conclusions: (1) in the absence of changes in litter quality and root exudation, the short-term CO2 stimulus of litter quantity leads to only a minimal CO2 stimulus of productivity or C storage in the medium term (≈ 20 years) and long term (≈ 200 years), because of constraints on soil N availability; (2) increasing plant nitrogen use efficiency (via a decrease in the N:C ratio of new litter) makes little impact on these results; (3) a significant CO2 response in the medium term requires a substantial decrease in the N:C ratio of older litter, when it is approaching stabilisation as soil organic matter, although the long-term CO2 response remains small; and (4) an increase in N fixation leads to a small effect on productivity in the short term, but a very large effect on both productivity and C storage in the long term. These results suggest that soil N constraints on the long-term CO2-fertilisation effect can be overcome to a significant extent only by increases in N acquisition, although only modest increases may be required. The region controlling translation of the cat gene, which codes for chloramphenicol acetyltransferase, has been varied structurally in a series of plasmids that place the gene under control of the lac promoter. These plasmid constructs have enabled study of the structural features that affect the efficiency of mRNA translation. Altering the potential for secondary structure formation within the translation control region caused a tenfold variation in the synthesis of CAT enzyme, whereas varying the distance between the Shine-Dalgarno sequence (SD) and the translation start codon from 7 to 13 bases did not significantly affect the yield of CAT. If the SD was situated in a region of mRNA that is capable of base pairing, the efficiency of translation was decreased; however, the translation start codon, AUG, can initiate translation efficiently even when located in a segment capable of duplex formation. Overlapping of the cat translation control region by translation initiated upstream markedly affected initiation of translation within the cat gene: out-of-frame overlapping translation reduced CAT production by 90%; in-frame overlapping translation prevented detectable initiation of protein synthesis at the cat gene translation start codon, and yielded only fusion proteins. The enzymatic activity of such proteins was influenced by the length of the adventitious peptide segment added to the amino-terminus of the CAT polypeptide. 相似文献
