A variant of the standard conditioned inhibition procedure was used to evaluate landmark-based spatial search in a touchscreen preparation. Pigeons were given compound trials with one landmark (A) positioned in a consistent spatial relationship to a hidden goal and another landmark (B) positioned randomly with respect to A and the hidden goal (AB+). On half of the non-reinforced inhibitory trials, A was paired with landmark X (AX-) and on the remaining trials B was paired with Y (BY-). All subjects were also given reinforced trials with a transfer excitor (T+). During conditioned inhibition training, subjects showed no change in overall responding during AX- trials but did show a decrease in the number of pecks to the goal location signaled by A. During non-reinforced summation tests with landmark T, X had a greater suppressive effect than did Y on overall responding but the percentage of pecks at the goal did not differ unless X was positioned near the expected goal signaled by T. These data demonstrate that the effectiveness of a stimulus trained as an inhibitor is dependent on the strength of the association between its training excitor (A) and the US, as well as, the spatial arrangement of stimuli during testing.  相似文献

In two experiments, rats were trained to find a hidden platform in a Morris pool in the presence of two landmarks. Landmark B was present on all training trials, on half the trials accompanied by landmark A, on the remainder by landmark C. For rats in Group Bn, B was near the location of the platform; for those in Group Bf, B was far from the platform. Group Bn performed better than Group Bf on test trials to B alone, but significantly worse on test trials to a new configuration formed by A and C. Thus, the spatial proximity of B to the platform affected not only how well it could be used to locate the platform, but also its ability to prevent learning about other landmarks.  相似文献

Many foraging animals rely on visual landmarks and/or habitual paths to locate important resources. We examined the degree to which rats rely on these cues when they predicted conflicting food locations. In this foraging task, rats were required to find food which could be located using either a fixed route or a nearby visual landmark. In tests, we found that their subsequent search-based estimates of the food location were the same when animals had acquired a long-term memory of the route, the landmark, or both. We show that the degree to which animals rely on the cues depends not only on the discrepancy between the two cues, but also on whether animals can match the testing “view” with a learned “view” that has been acquired during training.  相似文献

Finding a given location can be based on a variety of strategies, for example on the estimation of spatial relations between landmarks, called spatial orientation. In galliform birds, spatial orientation has been demonstrated convincingly in very young domestic chicks. We wanted to know whether adult Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) without food deprivation are also able to use spatial orientation. The quails had to learn the relation of a food location with four conspicuous landmarks which were placed in the corners of a square shaped arena. They were trained to find mealworms in three adjacent food cups in a circle of 20 such cups. The rewarded feeders were located during training between the same two landmarks each of which showed a distinct pattern. When the birds had learned the task, all landmarks were displaced clockwise by 90 degrees. When tested in the new situation, all birds redirected their choices with respect to the landmark shift. In subsequent tests, however, the previously correct position was also chosen. According to our results, quails are using conspicuous landmarks as a first choice for orientation. The orientation towards the previously rewarded location, however, indicates that the neuronal representation of space which is used by the birds also includes more fine grain, less conspicuous cues, which are probably also taken into account in uncertain situations. We also presume that the rare orientation towards never rewarded feeders may be due to a foraging strategy instead of being mistakes.  相似文献

The present set of experiments evaluated the possibility that the hormonal changes that appear at the onset of puberty might influence the strategies used by female rats to solve a spatial navigation task. In each experiment, rats were trained in a triangular shaped pool to find a hidden platform which maintained a constant relationship with two sources of information, one individual landmark and one corner of the pool with a distinctive geometry. Then, three test trials were conducted without the platform in counterbalanced order. In one, both the geometry and the landmark were simultaneously presented, although in different spatial positions, in order to measure the rats' preferences. In the remaining test trials what the rats had learned about the two sources of information was measured by presenting them individually. Experiment 1, with 60-day old rats, revealed a clear sex difference, thus replicating a previous finding (Rodríguez et al., 2010): females spent more time in an area of the pool that corresponded to the landmark, whereas males spent more time in the distinctive corner of the pool even though the remaining tests revealed that both sexes had learned about the two sources of information. In Experiment 2, 30-day old female rats, unlike adults, preferred to solve the task using the geometry information rather than the landmark (although juvenile males behaved in exactly the same way as adults). Experiment 3 directly compared the performance of 90- and 30-day old females and found that while the adult females preferred to solve the task using the landmark, the reverse was true in juvenile females. Experiment 4 compared ovariectomized and sham operated females and found that while sham operated females preferred to solve the task using the landmark, the reverse was true in ovariectomized females. Finally, Experiment 5 directly compared adult males and females, juvenile males and females, and ovariectomized females and found that adult males, juvenile males and females, and ovariectomized females did not differ among them in their preferred cue, but they all differed from adult females.  相似文献

In time-place learning (TPL) paradigms animals are thought to form tripartite memory codes consisting of the spatiotemporal characteristics of biologically significant events. In Phase I, rats were trained on a modified TPL task in which either the spatial or temporal component was constant, while the other component varied randomly. If the memory codes are tripartite then when one aspect of the code is random the rats should have difficulty learning the constant aspect of the code. However, rats that were trained with a fixed spatial sequence of food availability and a random duration did in fact learn the task. Rats that were trained with a fixed duration and a random sequence did not learn the task. In Phase II all rats were placed on a TPL task in which food availability was contingent upon both spatial and temporal information. According to the tripartite theory, prior knowledge of either aspect of the code should have little effect on the acquisition of the task. The rats that received fixed spatial training learned the task relatively more quickly. The use of bipartite, rather than tripartite codes, is better able to explain the results of the current study.  相似文献

In Experiment 1, compared to non-reinforced presentation of a food stimulus (A → no US), the association of a food stimulus with wheel running (A → US) blocked subsequent avoidance of a distinctive flavor (X), when both the food and flavor were followed by wheel running (AX → US). Experiment 2 replicated and extended the blocking effect, demonstrating that the amount of avoidance of X after AX → wheel training depended on the correlation between A-alone trials and wheel running—the predictiveness of the A stimulus. The present study is the first to demonstrate associative blocking of conditioned taste avoidance (CTA) induced by wheel running and strongly implicates associative learning as the basis for this kind of avoidance.  相似文献

In a Brazilian population of the neotropical rodent Akodon montensis we found five sex-reversed XY females. These animals were cytogenetically analyzed by chromosome painting using species-specific DNA probes from the Y chromosome, generated by chromosomal microdissection and subsequent use of the degenerate oligonucleotide-primed polymerase chain reaction (DOP-PCR). The results showed a chromosome complement with an apparently normal Y chromosome and an X chromosome carrying a translocation that encompasses a large portion of the Y chromosome (seemingly the entire Y). Ovarian histology suggested that these females are fertile. Amplification of the SRY HMG box sequence by PCR shows that at least one copy of the Sry gene is present in the A. montensis XY females. Based on our findings, we suggest that the breakpoint of the X;Y translocation probably altered an X-linked sex-determining locus (or loci), blocking testicular organogenesis in the XY females. Further studies are necessary to determine the precise location and role of this putative sex-determining chromosomal region. Genetic mechanisms of XY sex reversal in A. montensis populations are discussed.  相似文献

Two experiments were performed to look for evidence of episodic-like memory in rats. On each of a series of trials on an eight-arm radial maze, rats in two groups entered four open arms in Phase 1, with reward pellets on three arms and a favored reward (chocolate in Experiment 1 and cheese in Experiment 2) on the remaining arm. Phase 2 retention tests were given 30 min or 4 h after Phase 1, with all eight arms open. The four arms not entered in Phase 1 all contained reward pellets, and the three arms that contained pellets in Phase 1 were empty. In the replenish short group, the favored reward was replenished at the same location where it was found in Phase 1 at the 30 min retention interval but was absent (Experiment 1) or degraded (Experiment 2) at the 4 h retention interval. In the replenish long group, the favored reward was replenished at the 4 h retention interval but not at the 30 min retention interval. Over a number of daily trials that randomly mixed short and long delays, rats in both experiments learned to return earlier to the arm containing the favored reward at the retention interval when it was replenished than at the retention interval when it was absent or degraded. These results replicate earlier findings [Babb, S.J., Crystal, J.D., 2005, Discrimination of what, when, and where: implications for episodic-like memory in rats. Learn. 1. Three pigeons (Columba livia) were trained to find hidden food in a sunken well (3.3 cm in diameter) at a constant place within an (160 cm x 160 cm) experimental box (Fig. 1). After learning the location, the animals were tested occasionally with the well and food absent. Landmarks in the experimental box might be transformed on such tests. 2. Changing the height or width of a nearby landmark had no systematic influence on the position of peak search. Translating a nearby landmark, however, led to a shift in peak search position. All three birds then searched most somewhere between the original goal location, as defined by the unmoved landmarks, and the goal location as defined by the shifted landmark. Within a limited range of landmark shift, the peak shift as a function of landmark shift is linear (Fig. 3). 3. To explain the data (Fig. 7), the pigeon records at the location of the goal the algebraic vectors from a number of landmarks to the goal. These vectors have both a direction and a distance component. When searching for the goal again in the experimental box, it computes independently for each landmark a navigation vector. This is arrived at by vector-adding the algebraic vector from the bird's current position to the landmark in question, supplied by perception, to the corresponding landmark-goal vector in its record. The pigeon moves in the direction and distance specified by a weighted average of the independently calculated navigation vectors. For positive vector weights, vector geometry guarantees that the bird would search somewhere between the original goal and the goal according to the shifted landmark. The extent to which it shifts toward the shifted goal reflects the vector weight given to the shifted landmark.  相似文献

We wanted to study the expression of P2-receptors at the mRNA-level in the heart and if it is affected by congestive heart failure (CHF). To quantify the P2 receptor mRNA-expression we used a competitive RT-PCR protocol which is based on an internal RNA standard. The P2 receptor mRNA-expression was quantified in hearts from CHF rats and compared to sham-operated rats. Furthermore, the presence of receptor mRNA was studied in the myocardium from patients with heart failure. In the sham operated rats the G-protein coupled P2Y-receptors were expressed at a higher level than the ligand gated ion-channel receptor (P2X1). Among the P2Y-receptors the P2Y6-receptor was most abundantly expressed (P2Y6 > P2Y1 > P2Y2 = P2Y4 > P2X1). A prominent change was seen for the P2X1- and P2Y2-receptor mRNA levels which were increased 2.7-fold and 4.7-fold respectively in the myocardium from the left ventricle of CHF-rats. In contrast, the P2Y1-, P2Y4- and P2Y6-receptor mRNA levels were not significantly altered in CHF rats. In human myocard the P2X1-, P2Y1-, P2Y2-, P2Y6- and P2Y11-receptors were detected by RT-PCR in both right and left atria and ventricles, while the P2Y4-receptor band was weak or absent. In conclusion, most of the studied P2-receptors were expressed in both rat and human hearts. Furthermore, the P2X1- and P2Y2-receptor mRNA were upregulated in CHF, suggesting a pathophysiological role for these receptors in the development of heart failure.  相似文献

A new simple but general estimation method for survival time in a hot environment is presented in this study. Even in heat-tolerant rats showing a triphasic heat response, an accurate estimation of survival time (ST) is possible. Rat groups, which included some heat-tolerant individuals, were exposed to 42.5 degrees C, 40% rh. Colonic temperature (Tco) was measured continuously by copper-constantan thermocouple. The ST (Y) of male and female rats were expressed as a linear function of time (X) until the Tco of 42.5 degrees C was reached: Y = 0.976X + 30.6 and Y = 0.968X + 31.6, respectively. A Tco of 42.5 degrees C at rest was just below the maximum survivable body temperature and above the steady-state equilibrium Tco levels during the second phase of the triphasic heat-response curve. Heat-tolerant individuals showed lower equilibrium temperatures than heat-intolerant rats. All 140 rats survived the Tco of 42.5 degrees C and lived for more than 8 wk, thus enabling them to be used for future experiments on thermoregulation. The heat survivors were able to reproduce, and their genetically controlled offspring could be used for thermoregulatory experiments.  相似文献

We compared the use of olfactory, visual, and spatial cues for learning the location of stored food by gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis). All experimental cues were extrinsic, that is, they originated from the environment around the food rather than from the food itself. In training trials, artificial caches with one of two odors, one of two colors, and six of 12 spatial locations contained sunflower seeds. In experimental trials, the odors, colors, and sets of spatial locations associated with food were reversed one at a time, so that only two of the three training cues gave evidence of the food rewards. Consequent declines in food localization by the squirrels revealed differential use of particular cue modalities. The data show that squirrels used visual cues the most and olfactory cues the least with this design. These results, along with other evidence, suggest that gray squirrels use spatial memory in food recovery.  相似文献

Three goldfish were trained to search for food buried 20 cm from a perspex tower. In the absence of food, all fish still searched in the correct location, revealing that fish can use a landmark to locate food. Halving either the width or height of the landmark resulted in searches significantly closer to the tower, suggesting that fish determined their position relative to the landmark using its horizontal and vertical visual angles.  相似文献

Summary Pigeons (Columba livia) were trained to find hidden food in a sunken well within a square box. After learning the location, they were tested occasionally with the well and food absent. The resulting search distributions were symmetric about the peak, implying a linear scale of measurement for distance. The spread of the distribution was a constant proportion of the distance to the nearest landmark, supporting Weber's Law. As well, in one test in which a landmark was shifted in a diagonal direction, the pigeons shifted their peak place of search both in the direction of landmark shift and in the direction orthogonal to the direction of landmark shift. This contradicted a pattern found earlier: For landmark shifts along the principal axes of the square box, pigeons only shifted their peak place of search in the direction of landmark shift, not in the orthogonal direction. The vector sum model, which predicts shifts of the peak place of search only in the direction of landmark shift, is disconfirmed and must be revised.  相似文献

Charcot‐Marie‐Tooth 1A (CMT1A) is a demyelinating hereditary neuropathy whose pathogenetic mechanisms are still poorly defined and an etiologic treatment is not yet available. An abnormally high intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) occurs in Schwann cells from CMT1A rats (CMT1A SC) and is caused by overexpression of the purinoceptor P2X7. Normalization of the Ca2+ levels through down‐regulation of P2X7 appears to restore the normal phenotype of CMT1A SC in vitro. We recently demonstrated that the diadenosine 5′,5′′′‐P1, P2‐diphosphate (Ap2A) isomer P18 behaves as an antagonist of the P2X7 purinergic receptor, effectively blocking channel opening induced by ATP. In addition, P18 behaves as a P2Y11 agonist, inducing cAMP overproduction in P2Y11‐overexpressing cells. Here we investigated the in vitro effects of P18 on CMT1A SC. We observed that basal levels of intracellular cAMP ([cAMP]i), a known regulator of SC differentiation and myelination, are significantly lower in CMT1A SC than in wild‐type (wt) cells. P18 increased [cAMP]i in both CMT1A and wt SC, and this effects was blunted by NF157, a specific P2Y11 antagonist. Prolonged treatment of organotypic dorsal root ganglia (DRG) cultures with P18 significantly increased expression of myelin protein zero, a marker of myelin production, in both CMT1A and wt cultures. Interestingly, P18 decreased the content of non‐phosphorylated neurofilaments, a marker of axonal damage, only in CMT1A DRG cultures. These results suggest that P2X7 antagonists, in combination with [cAMP]i‐increasing agents, could represent a therapeutic strategy aimed at correcting the molecular derangements causing the CMT1A phenotype. The aim of this study was to identify some of the cues that macaques follow when they search for new food sites. A social group of 37 long-tailed macaques was confined to a holding cage while an experimenter concealed food in an outdoor enclosure according to one of the following rules: (1) along the edge of a visible environmental border, (2) within structures of the same general type, or (3) along an ecologically irrelevant, invisible straight line. To provide the animals with a cue for detecting the rule, three piles of visible food were also presented according to the rule. Each of the 60 trials involved a different location in the 880 m2 enclosure. The animals showed clear evidence of utilizing the first two rules from the outset of testing and the third rule about five trials. The animals found concealed food along environmental borders and within matching objects more quickly than along invisible lines. They also showed a rapid improvement in food finding on the invisible line. The results suggest that long-tailed macaques extend their search for food to a given class of environmental structure rather than exclusively by pure spatial gradients. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The ability of pigeons to form configural stimulus representations was assessed in two operant discrimination experiments. In Experiment 1 the transverse patterning problem of Spence (1952) was trained. In Phase 1, subjects had to choose stimulus A on A + B — trials; B + C — trials were added in Phase 2. In Phase 3, the first two pairs were combined with C + A — trials. The success of the subjects was simulated by a model assuming that elemental and configural stimulus representations coexist in a stable proportion, even in the phases of the experiment which do not require configural stimulus representations for successful solution. Experiment 2 replicated the first two phases of Experiment 1, but trained A + C — in Phase 3. Comparison of the results of this experiment with simulations of the model showed that elemental and configural stimulus representations coexisted in similar proportions as in Experiment 1, even though they were not necessary for successful task solution.  相似文献

Little is known about the navigational abilities of domestic fowl. The question of how chickens represent and orient in space becomes relevant when they are kept in non-cage systems. Since the sun is known to be the dominant spatial organiser in other diurnal bird species, we started our investigation of the chicken’s spatial abilities by subjecting them to a food-searching task with the sun as the only consistent visual cue. In an additional experiment we tried to rule out the use of auditory cues in finding a food reward.

Eight ISA Brown chicks were housed in outdoor pens. A separate test arena comprised an open-topped, opaque-sided wooden octagon (2 m wide and 1.5 m high). Eight goal boxes with food pots were attached to each of the arena sides; a wooden barrier inside each goal box prevented the birds from seeing the food pot before entering. After habituation we tested during five daily 5 min trials whether the chicks were able to find food in a systematically allocated goal direction. Food residue in every foot pot controlled for the use of olfactory cues and no external landmark cues were visible. Every day each box was unpredictably moved to a randomly assigned side of the arena and the side to face north was also randomly allocated, to prevent the chicks from using cues other than the sun’s position. Circular statistics were used to determine whether birds moved in a non-random direction and if so, if they significantly oriented goalwards. The results showed that seven of the eight birds moved significantly in the goal direction. It seems likely that the chicks used the sun to orient. Due to weather constraints only four chicks received the same treatment on a new location, to rule out the use of auditory cues. Two of these four chicks significantly moved in the goal direction.

The results from our experiments show that domestic chicks use spatial memory to orient towards a hidden goal. Moreover, their orientation is most likely to be based on sun cues opening up the possibility that the sun compass may dominate even in this ancestrally predominantly ground-living forest bird.  相似文献
