Behavioural synchrony (allelomimetic behaviour), and inter-individual distances are aspects of social and anti-predator strategies which may have been affected by domestication. Chickens are known to adjust synchronization and inter-individual distances depending on behaviour. We hypothesized that White Leghorn (WL) chickens would show less synchronized behaviour than the ancestor, the red jungle fowl (RJF). Sixty birds, 15 female and 15 male WL and the same number of RJF (28 weeks old) were studied in groups of three in furnished pens (1 m × 2 m) for 24 consecutive hours per group, following 24 h of habituation. Video tapes covering 4 h per group (dawn, 9-10 am, 1-2 pm and dusk) were analysed. Red junglefowl perched significantly more, but there were no breed effects on the frequency or daily rhythm of any other activities, or on average inter-individual distances. Red junglefowl were more synchronized during perching and a tendency for the same was found for social behaviour. After performance of the two most synchronized behaviours, perching and comfort behaviour, individual distance increased more for RJF than WL. According to this study domestication of chickens appears not to have significantly altered the relative frequencies of different activities or average inter-individual distances, but have caused some changes in behavioural synchronization and maintenance of activity-specific inter-individual distances in chickens. The changes may indicate an adaptive response to captivity and domestication.  相似文献

A growth‐related QTL on chicken chromosome 1 has previously been shown to influence domestication behaviour in chickens. In this study, we used Red Junglefowl (RJF) and White Leghorn (WL) as well as the intercross between them to investigate whether stress affects the way birds allocate their time between familiar and unfamiliar conspecifics in a social preference test (‘social support seeking’), and how this is related to genotype at specific loci within the growth QTL. Red Junglefowl males spent more time with unfamiliar chickens before the stressful event compared to the other birds, whereas all birds except WL males tended to spend less time with unfamiliar ones after stress. A significant QTL locus was found to influence both social preference under undisturbed circumstances and social support seeking. The WL allele at this QTL was associated not only with a preference for unfamiliar individuals but also with a shift towards familiar ones in response to stress (social support seeking). A second, suggestive QTL also affected social support seeking, but in the opposite direction; the WL allele was associated with increased time spent with unfamiliar individuals. The region contains several possible candidate genes, and gene expression analysis of a number of them showed differential expression between RJF and WL of AVPR2 (receptor for vasotocin), and possibly AVPR1a (another vasotocin receptor) and NRCAM (involved in neural development) in the lower frontal lobes of the brains of RJF and WL animals. The present study examined the incidence of chronic stress in business executives (109 subjects: 75 male and 34 female) and its relationship with cortisol levels, cognitive performance, and autonomic nervous system (ANS) reactivity after an acute mental stressor. Blood samples were collected from the subjects to measure cortisol concentration. After the sample collection, the subjects completed the Lipp Inventory of Stress Symptoms for Adults and the Stroop Color-Word Test to evaluate stress and cognitive performance levels, respectively. Saliva samples were collected prior to, immediately after, and five minutes after the test. The results revealed that 90.1% of the stressed subjects experienced stress phases that are considered chronic stress. At rest, the subjects with chronic stress showed higher cortisol levels, and no gender differences were observed. No differences were found between the stressed and non-stressed subjects regarding salivary amylase activity prior to test. Chronic stress also impaired performance on the Stroop test, which revealed higher rates of error and longer reaction times in the incongruent stimulus task independently of gender. For the congruent stimulus task of the Stroop test, the stressed males presented a higher rate of errors than the non-stressed males and a longer reaction time than the stressed females. After the acute mental stressor, the non-stressed male group showed an increase in salivary alpha-amylase activity, which returned to the initial values five minutes after the test; this ANS reactivity was not observed in the chronically stressed male subjects. The ANS responses of the non-stressed vs stressed female groups were not different prior to or after the Stroop test. This study is the first to demonstrate a blunted reactivity of the ANS when male subjects with chronic psychological stress were subjected to an acute mental stressor, and this change could contribute to impairments in cognitive performance.  相似文献

The present study investigated the long-lasting effects of prenatal repeated restraint stress on social behavior and anxiety, as well as its repercussions on oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (VP)-positive neurons of the paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic (SON) nuclei from stressed pups in adulthood. Female Wistar rats were exposed to restraint stress in the last 7 days of pregnancy. At birth, pups were cross-fostered and assigned to the following groups: prenatally non-stressed offspring raised by prenatally non-stressed mothers (NS:NS), prenatally non-stressed offspring raised by prenatally stressed mothers (S:NS), prenatally stressed offspring raised by prenatally non-stressed mothers (NS:S), prenatally stressed offspring raised by prenatally stressed mothers (S:S). As adults, male prenatally stressed offspring raised both by stressed mothers (S:S group) and non-stressed ones (NS:S group) showed impaired social memory and interaction. In addition, when both adverse conditions coexisted (S:S group), increased anxiety-like behavior and aggressiveness was observed in association with a decrease in the number of OT-positive magnocellular neurons, VP-positive magnocellular and parvocellular neurons of the PVN. The NS:S group exhibited a reduction in the amount of VP-positive magnocellular neurons compared to the S:NS. Thus, the social behavior deficits observed in the S:S and NS:S groups may be only partially associated with these alterations to the peptidergic systems. No changes were shown in the OT and VP cellular composition of the SON nucleus. Nevertheless, it is clear that a special attention should be given to the gestational period, since stressful events during this time may be related to the emergence of behavioral impairments in adulthood.  相似文献

The effect of tail-pinch stress interpolated between the saccharin conditioned stimulus (CS) and the illness-inducing unconditioned stimulus (US) during long-trace taste-aversion conditioning was examined in young- and old adult rats with a two-cylinder (saccharin versus water) test. A 2 x 2 x 4 factorial ANOVA was performed on percent-preference-for-saccharin data, with age (young, old), stress condition (stressed, non-stressed), and CS-US interval (22.5-, 45-, 90-, and 180-min) being the factors under consideration. The ANOVA yielded only significant main effects of stress condition and CS-US interval. These findings indicate that stress weakens the CS-US association as evidenced by a higher percent preference for saccharin in the stressed rats than in non-stressed rats at all CS-US intervals. A comparison of the stressed and non-stressed conditioned rats with pseudo-conditioned controls showed that the non-stressed rats formed strong aversions up to the 45-min CS-US interval whereas the stressed rats showed no conditioning beyond the 22.5 min CS-US interval, indicating that stress decreases the effective CS-US interval. Results were interpreted in terms of time-contraction and an internal biological countdown timer hypothesized to govern processes involved in associative learning over long delays.  相似文献

本文研究了根田鼠母体捕食应激对其子代运动及探究行为的作用。母体自妊娠中期至分娩期间,每天被短暂且重复地暴露给艾鼬。分娩后,对母体及其子代正常饲养。在子代性成熟后,分别测定其运动和探究行为。母体捕食应激显著降低子代的运动时间和频率。在探究行为中,母体捕食应激子代的探究潜伏期和探究时间均显著大于对照子代;其次,母体捕食应激雌性子代的探究次数显著小于对照。另外,个体的运动水平以及探究潜伏期和探究次数均存在性别差异。本研究结果表明,田鼠类母体捕食应激对其子代运动和探究行为有显著的抑制作用,由此可能对子代适合度,乃至种群波动产生负效应。  相似文献

The thyroid stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR) has been suggested to be a “domestication locus” in the chicken, due to a strong selective sweep over the gene found in domesticated chickens, differentiating them from their wild ancestor the Red Junglefowl (RJF). We investigated the effect of the mutation on development (incubation time), behaviour and thyroid hormone levels in intercross chickens homozygous for the mutation (d/d), wild type homozygotes (w/w) or heterozygotes (d/w). This allowed an assessment of the effect of genotype at this locus against a random mix of RJF and WL genotypes throughout the rest of the genome, controlling for family effects. The d/d genotype showed a longer incubation time, less fearful behaviours, lower number of aggressive behaviours and decreased levels of the thyroid hormone T4, in comparison to the w/w genotype. The difference between TSHR genotypes (d/d vs. w/w) in these respects mirrors the differences in development and behaviour between pure domesticated White Leghorns and pure RJF chickens. Higher individual T3 and T4 levels were associated with more aggression. Our study indicates that the TSHR mutation affects typical domestication traits, possibly through modifying plasma levels of thyroid hormones, and may therefore have been important during the evolution of the domestic chicken.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to assess the genetic diversity, population structure, and relatedness in Indian red jungle fowl (RJF, Gallus gallus murgi) from northern India and three domestic chicken populations (gallus gallus domesticus), maintained at the institute farms, namely White Leghorn (WL), Aseel (AS) and Red Cornish (RC) using 25 microsatellite markers. All the markers were polymorphic, the number of alleles at each locus ranged from five (MCW0111) to forty-three (LEI0212) with an average number of 19 alleles per locus. Across all loci, the mean expected heterozygosity and polymorphic information content were 0.883 and 0.872, respectively. Population-specific alleles were found in each population. A UPGMA dendrogram based on shared allele distances clearly revealed two major clusters among the four populations; cluster I had genotypes from RJF and WL whereas cluster II had AS and RC genotypes. Furthermore, the estimation of population structure was performed to understand how genetic variation is partitioned within and among populations. The maximum ?K value was observed for K = 4 with four identified clusters. Furthermore, factorial analysis clearly showed four clustering; each cluster represented the four types of population used in the study. These results clearly, demonstrate the potential of microsatellite markers in elucidating the genetic diversity, relationships, and population structure analysis in RJF and domestic chicken populations.  相似文献

Adrenal corticosteroid hormones act via mineralocorticoid (MR) and glucocorticoid receptors (GR) in the brain, influencing learning and memory. MRs have been implicated in the initial behavioral response in novel situations, which includes behavioral strategies in learning tasks. Different strategies can be used to solve navigational tasks, for example hippocampus-dependent spatial or striatum-dependent stimulus-response strategies. Previous studies suggested that MRs are involved in spatial learning and induce a shift between learning strategies when animals are allowed a choice between both strategies. In the present study, we further explored the role of MRs in spatial and stimulus-response learning in two separate circular holeboard tasks using female mice with forebrain-specific MR deficiency and MR overexpression and their wildtype control littermates. In addition, we studied sex-specific effects using male and female MR-deficient mice. First, we found that MR-deficient compared to control littermates and MR-overexpressing mice display altered exploratory and searching behavior indicative of impaired acquisition of novel information. Second, female (but not male) MR-deficient mice were impaired in the spatial task, while MR-overexpressing female mice showed improved performance in the spatial task. Third, MR-deficient mice were also impaired in the stimulus-response task compared to controls and (in the case of females) MR-overexpressing mice. We conclude that MRs are important for coordinating the processing of information relevant for spatial as well as stimulus-response learning.  相似文献

目的:探讨慢性不可预见性应激抑郁模型大鼠大脑海马非对称性超微结构与学习记忆能力的改变。方法:SD雄性大鼠20只,随机分为正常对照组与抑郁模型组,每组10只。采用慢性轻度不可预见性应激21d及单笼饲养方法建立抑郁模型,应激前以及应激21d末对两组大鼠进行旷场实验、液体消耗实验及体重测量,对大鼠进行避暗穿梭实验,测试其学习记忆能力,之后活杀动物,取出大鼠左右海马,制作常规电镜标本,观察海马超微结构的改变。结果:在穿梭变实验中抑郁大鼠学习记忆潜伏期减少,进入暗箱错误积分增多。抑郁大鼠左右侧海马超微结构中左侧海马较正常对照组神经细胞及胶质细胞变化明显,表现为内质网扩张,溶酶体增多。而右侧海马远不及左侧损伤严重。结论:慢性不可预见性应激抑郁大鼠学习记忆能力显著下降,其可能与海马组织在应激过程受到的累积损伤有关,且抑郁大鼠海马损伤呈非对称表现。  相似文献

Gastric sensation and accommodation are studied by barostat, but this is invasive. The drink test is noninvasive and may provide similar information. We evaluated relationships between drink test, gastric function, symptoms, and psychiatric distress. Controls (73) and functional dyspeptics (FD) (92) were studied using a 5-min water load test (WL5), gastric emptying, and electrogastrography (EGG). Symptoms, quality of life, and psychiatric distress were measured using standardized measures. Controls underwent test-retest of WL5 and comparison of WL5 with 100 ml/min water-based drink test (WL100) or nutrient drink. Controls, FD, and gastroparetics estimated drinking capacity before WL5 using a visual analog scale. WL5 correlated with WL100 (r = 0.7929) but not nutrient drink test (r = 0.1995). WL5 was significantly less in FD than controls, and abnormal WL5 was seen in 46%. In FD, volume to fullness inversely correlated with symptom severity (r =-0.29; P = 0.0154) and WL5 produced more symptoms, particularly nausea. Gastric function was not different between FD with normal or abnormal WL5. Symptoms and psychiatric distress were similar between normal and abnormal WL5 groups, but the abnormal group had significantly poorer quality of life. Controls and gastroparetics had good correlation of estimated and ingested volumes, but FD did not. Versus FD with normal WL5 capacity, FD with impaired drinking capacity have normal gastric function and similar symptoms but poorer quality of life. FD are less able to predict drinking capacity. These data suggest that WL5 identifies FD with intact gastric function but abnormal visceral perception.  相似文献

目的:探究Aβ低分子量寡聚体对大鼠学习记忆功能的影响;方法:双侧海马内一次性注射Aβ低分子量寡聚体,15天后开始进行行为测试,测试方法采用跳台实验法、穿梭实验法和Morris水迷宫法;结果:跳台实验结果显示,与对照组比较,Aβ组跳台潜伏期短,错误次数多,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05);穿梭实验结果显示,与对照组比较,Aβ组由明箱进入暗箱的潜伏期短,错误次数多,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05);水迷宫实验结果显示,与对照组比较,Aβ组潜伏期长,跨越原平台次数少,差异有统计学意义(P<0.01);结论:Aβ组大鼠学习记忆能力和空间分辨能力降低,Aβ低分子量寡聚体在大鼠体内表现出较强的毒性作用。  相似文献

以红色原鸡(Red Jungle Fowl, RJF)、丝羽乌骨鸡(Taihe silk Chicken, TS)、隐性白洛克鸡(White Recessive Rock, WRR)为资源群, 在鸡一号染色体的Contig.060226.1上选取了一个200 kb的区域, 比较研究了3个群体的SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism)多样性、估算了鸡的初始群体有效规模大小(effective size of population, Ne)。红色原鸡、丝羽乌骨鸡、隐性白洛克鸡3个群体的平均杂合度分别为0.28533±0.03475、0.32926±0.03919、0.30168±0.04038。显著性检验差异不显著(P=0.2368>0.05)。根据Latter 和Nei的方法对鸡的群体有效规模进行了估算, 鸡的初始群体有效规模大小为20 000~150 000。鸡在驯养的早期阶段经历过严厉的瓶颈效应, 但瓶颈效应对鸡各品种SNP的多样性并未产生显著影响。笔者认为, 鸡在驯养的早期阶段群体有效规模足够大, 品种分化过程中群体迅速扩张, 品种间的广泛杂交(特别是和红色原鸡之间)以及鸡基因组的高重组率等因素是导致家鸡和原鸡以及各家鸡品种间SNP多样性没有显著差别的重要原因。  相似文献

Florida Scrub-Jays (Aphelocoma coerulescens) in a suburban environment with year-round access to multiple sources of abundant, human-source foods consistently breed earlier each year and have lower baseline levels of circulating corticosterone (CORT) than jays in a nearby wildland setting. These findings suggest that food supplies influence CORT levels, which in turn may partially determine the timing of reproduction. However, wildland birds with access to high-quality supplemental foods did not advance breeding or lower CORT levels to the degree observed in the suburbs. Therefore, rather than quality or quantity of food consumed, the perception of a reliable and predictable food supply may be an important factor in determining laying dates. If a predictable food supply accelerates the reproductive process, it follows that food provided on an unpredictable schedule may slow reproduction. We subjected captive Western Scrub-Jays (A. californica) to a 30-day photoperiod transition from short- to long-days and tested whether birds with access to food on an unpredictable schedule exhibited delayed or reduced production of reproductive hormones compared with birds given food on a predictable schedule. Baseline CORT concentrations increased slightly during the experiment, but did not differ between treatment groups. Birds with unpredictable food had slightly lower testosterone levels relative to controls, but there was no effect on estradiol or luteinizing hormone. Our findings offer weak support for the hypothesis that an unpredictable food supply will delay the onset of reproduction; however, the artificial lab environment may limit the application of these findings to free-living populations.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to measure shoot and root dry matter (DM) and production of auxins, salicylic acid, abscisic acid, and jasmonic acid in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seedlings cultivated under water stress and singly inoculated or co-inoculated with Achromobacter xylosoxidans (SF2) and Bacillus pumilus (SF3 and SF4) bacterial strains. Shoot DM was higher in non-stressed seedlings than in stressed seedlings for all inoculation treatments. Water stress resulted in decreased relative water content and reduction of shoot DM. Root DM was higher in stressed seedlings than in non-stressed seedlings. Salicylic acid was the most abundant phytohormone in shoots of stressed, singly inoculated and co-inoculated seedlings. High salicylic acid content in stressed seedlings suggests that this hormone plays a key role in abiotic stress. Abscisic acid was higher in stressed and co-inoculated seedlings than in non-stressed seedlings but was lower than that of salicylic acid. Auxin profile was similar to that of abscisic acid in co-inoculated seedlings. Shoot jasmonic acid content was increased in stressed seedlings co-inoculated with SF2/SF3 or SF2/SF4. Shoot hormonal profiles were different from those of root, suggesting a differential effect of bacterial inoculation on these plant organs. Our findings will be useful in future strategies to mitigate drought effects on crop plants through bacterial inoculation treatments.  相似文献

Red light (R) pretreatment of etiolated cucumber seedlings ( Cucumis sativus L. var. Elem) followed by prolonged dark incubation prior to white light (WL) exposure, had an adverse effect on the greening of the cotyledons. The effect was photoreversible by far-red (FR) light. Cotyledons which were dark incubated for 24 h following the R pulse greened more rapidly when exposed to WL than did the controls, while total chlorophyll (Chl) accumulation after 24 h in the light was about the same in both. However, after 48 h post-R dark incubation greening of the treated cotyledons was delayed, and their amount of Chl which accumulated after 24 h WL was about one half of that in non-treated seedlings. As the length of the post-R dark incubation period was extended Chl production became slower, so that after 96 h post-R dark incubation the Chl level in the treated cotyledons after 24 h WL was approximately 20% of the controls. No significant differences in amounts of protochlorophyll could be detected between seedlings preilluminated with R or R followed by FR. Seedlings 4-, 5- and 6-days-old at the time of R treatment showed similar degrees of impaired Chl synthesis following prolonged post-R dark incubation.  相似文献

Previous studies have linked aspartame consumption to impaired retention of learned behavior in rodents. Prenatal exposure to aspartame has also been shown to impair odor-associative learning in guinea pigs; and recently, aspartame-fed hyperlipidemic zebrafish exhibited weight gain, hyperglycemia and acute swimming defects. We therefore investigated the effects of chronic lifetime exposure to aspartame, commencing in utero, on changes in blood glucose parameters, spatial learning and memory in C57BL/6J mice. Morris Water Maze (MWM) testing was used to assess learning and memory, and a random-fed insulin tolerance test was performed to assess glucose homeostasis. Pearson correlation analysis was used to investigate the associations between body characteristics and MWM performance outcome variables. At 17 weeks of age, male aspartame-fed mice exhibited weight gain, elevated fasting glucose levels and decreased insulin sensitivity compared to controls (P<0.05). Females were less affected, but had significantly raised fasting glucose levels. During spatial learning trials in the MWM (acquisition training), the escape latencies of male aspartame-fed mice were consistently higher than controls, indicative of learning impairment. Thigmotactic behavior and time spent floating directionless was increased in aspartame mice, who also spent less time searching in the target quadrant of the maze (P<0.05). Spatial learning of female aspartame-fed mice was not significantly different from controls. Reference memory during a probe test was affected in both genders, with the aspartame-fed mice spending significantly less time searching for the former location of the platform. Interestingly, the extent of visceral fat deposition correlated positively with non-spatial search strategies such as floating and thigmotaxis, and negatively with time spent in the target quadrant and swimming across the location of the escape platform. These data suggest that lifetime exposure to aspartame, commencing in utero, may affect spatial cognition and glucose homeostasis in C57BL/6J mice, particularly in males.  相似文献

Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) is a promising aquaculture candidate, but the growth performance of this non-domesticated species may be negatively affected by its stress responsiveness to intensive culture conditions. To evaluate this potential problem, juvenile Eurasian perch were exposed to a standardized handling stressor twice a week for an 8-week period. A similar study was conducted on domesticated rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) for comparison of intra- and inter-specific differences. The stressed fish of both species showed lower body growth than the non-stressed control fish, however, the final mean body mass was 35.4% lower in the stressed Eurasian perch than in the non-stressed controls, compared to 22.8% difference between the two groups in rainbow trout. The stress responsiveness was examined by comparing the post-stress cortisol and glucose levels in repeatedly stressed fish and fish exposed to the stressor only once. The cortisol stress response in both species strongly indicated a habituation to the repeated stressor. Thus, repeatedly stressed Eurasian perch reached maximum cortisol levels of 130 ng/mL after 0.5 h compared to 200 ng/mL in the fish stressed once, while considerably smaller differences in cortisol levels were shown between the repeatedly and single stressed rainbow trout. Rainbow trout also showed lower post-stress glucose levels in the repeatedly stressed fish compared to the single stressed fish. In contrast, the glucose levels in both groups of Eurasian perch increased abruptly after stress treatment and remained elevated at approximately 19 mM for 6 h; levels were three times as high as the peak levels 3 h post-stress in rainbow trout. Together, the habituation of the stress response shown in both species did not eliminate the growth difference found in the repeatedly stressed fish versus the control fish. Further, the lower growth performance of Eurasian perch compared to rainbow trout could partly be due to the increased energy consumption in the more stress responsive Eurasian perch.  相似文献

Silicon (Si) can improve resistance of plants to insect attack and may also enhance tolerance of water stress. This study tested if Si-mediated host plant resistance to insect attack was augmented by water stress. Four sugarcane cultivars, two resistant (N21, N33) and two susceptible (N26, N11) to Eldana saccharina Walker were grown in a pot trial in Si-deficient river sand, with (Si+) and without (Si-) calcium silicate. To induce water stress, irrigation to half the trial was reduced after 8.5 months. The trial was artificially infested with E. saccharina eggs after water reduction and harvested 66 days later. Silicon treated, stressed and non-stressed plants of the same cultivar did not differ appreciably in Si content. Decreases in numbers of borers recovered and stalk damage were not associated with comparable increases in rind hardness in Si+ cane, particularly in water-stressed susceptible cultivars. Overall, Si+ plants displayed increased resistance to E. saccharina attack compared with Si- plants. Borer recoveries were significantly lower in stressed Si+ cane compared with either stressed Si- or non-stressed Si- and Si+ cane. Generally, fewer borers were recovered from resistant cultivars than susceptible cultivars. Stalk damage was significantly lower in Si+ cane than in Si- cane, for N21, N11 and N26. Stalk damage was significantly less in Si+ combined susceptible cultivars than in Si- combined susceptible cultivars under non-stressed and especially stressed conditions. In general, the reduction in borer numbers and stalk damage in Si+ plants was greater for water-stressed cane than non-stressed cane, particularly for susceptible sugarcane cultivars. The hypothesis that Si affords greater protection against E. saccharina borer attack in water-stressed sugarcane than in non-stressed cane and that this benefit is greatly enhanced in susceptible cultivars is supported. A possible active role for soluble Si in defence against E. saccharina is proposed.  相似文献

Plasma prolactin (PRL) levels were reduced in stressed and non-stressed male mice after a single dose of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive constituent of marihuana, while growth hormone (GH) levers were reduced only in non-stressed animals. Chronic treatment with THC did not affect PRL or GH levels under either condition. Neither acute nor repeated exposure to THC affected plasma corticosterone levels.In contrast to the affects of THC, acute exposure to cannabinol (CBN), a non-psychoactive ingredient in marihuana, increased plasma GH levels in non-stressed mice, while repeated CBN treatments reduced GH levels in stressed animals. Moreover, chronic CBN exposure resulted in decreased peripheral levels of corticosterone in both stressed and non-stressed mice, and reduced plasma PRL levels in stressed mice.Psychoactive and non-psychoactive components of marihuana can exert different effects on endocrine function and on responsivity to stress in male mice.  相似文献
