Studies monitoring changes in genetic diversity and composition through time allow a unique understanding of evolutionary dynamics and persistence of natural populations. However, such studies are often limited to species with short generation times that can be propagated in the laboratory or few exceptional cases in the wild. Species that produce dormant stages provide powerful models for the reconstruction of evolutionary dynamics in the natural environment. A remaining open question is to what extent dormant egg banks are an unbiased representation of populations and hence of the species’ evolutionary potential, especially in the presence of strong environmental selection. We address this key question using the water flea Daphnia magna, which produces dormant stages that accumulate in biological archives over time. We assess temporal genetic stability in three biological archives, previously used in resurrection ecology studies showing adaptive evolutionary responses to rapid environmental change. We show that neutral genetic diversity does not decline with the age of the population and it is maintained in the presence of strong selection. In addition, by comparing temporal genetic stability in hatched and unhatched populations from the same biological archive, we show that dormant egg banks can be consulted to obtain a reliable measure of genetic diversity over time, at least in the multidecadal time frame studied here. The stability of neutral genetic diversity through time is likely mediated by the buffering effect of the resting egg bank.  相似文献

The maintenance of species and genetic diversity within zooplankton egg banks may be crucial to the re-establishment of zooplankton communities following historical disturbance, such as anthropogenic acidification which globally caused widespread damage to ecological communities. Despite this, no other study has described basic characteristics of zooplankton egg banks among lakes with different acidification histories, such as variation in resting egg concentration. Theoretically, habitats with frequent periods of harsh environmental conditions are expected to select for resting egg production or prolonged dormancy in zooplankton, which would increase the size of the resting egg bank in lake sediments. In this study, we compared abundances of viable and inviable calanoid copepod resting eggs among three freshwater lakes with different acidification histories. While Swan Lake underwent major chemical and biological changes from acid and metal deposition, Teardrop and Bat lakes were relatively unaffected by historical acidification and had comparatively constant, but different pH over time. We also tested the effect of age on the viability of resting eggs. As predicted, higher numbers of viable resting eggs were found in recent sediments from acid-recovering Swan Lake compared to study lakes with relatively temporally constant environments (Teardrop and Bat lakes) when the total number of eggs was held as a covariate. We detected this result in spite of similar pelagic abundances of Leptodiaptomus minutus, the dominant species in zooplankton communities of these lakes. This pattern did not necessarily hold for inviable egg concentrations since these eggs were more abundant in both Swan and Bat lakes compared to Teardrop Lake in older sediments (1939–1951, 1800s). Within study lakes, the abundance of viable resting eggs declined with increased egg age. Further study is required to test mechanisms underlying these patterns. Handling editor: S. I. When faced with disturbances such as increased salinity, aquatic communities inhabiting inland coastal systems change and may or may not be resilient after salinity decreases. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential role of the resting egg bank for zooplankton community resilience. We predicted that (1) hatching of resting eggs is inhibited by increased salinities and (2) resting eggs remain viable when exposed to salinity and hatch when returned to freshwater. At the community level, we evaluated the hatching responses and the short-term viability of resting eggs exposed to a salinity gradient. The hatching of resting eggs was inhibited at higher salinities (16.0 and 32.0 g l?1). However, some resting eggs remained viable and hatched when returned to freshwater. Additionally, combining our experimental results to previously published field data, we observed that the pattern of hatching during exposure to salinity matches the temporal succession observed in the zooplankton community at our model system, after increased salinity. The recovery of zooplankton communities after disturbances involving increased salinity is likely facilitated by the presence of an egg bank. This finding has important implications for the recovery of zooplankton communities and the management of aquatic systems vulnerable to salinization worldwide.  相似文献

Resting egg banks of microcrustaceans have been used to reconstruct the evolutionary and ecological history of species. However, recent studies provided evidence for a discrepancy between dormant propagules in the sediment and the planktonic population. This pattern raises two questions: First, what is the value of data on resting egg banks for population dynamics over time and second, which component of the reproductive cycle causes the observed inconsistency? In our study we focussed on the second question by comparing the taxon composition of a resting egg bank with the reproductive success of ex-ephippial hatchlings. Species and interspecific hybrid identification of dormant and hatched stages was achieved through the application of restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of an internal transcribed spacer region. We found no significant deviation between the proportion of hatched Daphnia galeata, D. galeata × hyalina and D. hyalina individuals and the observed taxon composition of the resting egg bank. However, species and hybrids differed in their mode and relative success of reproduction. We conclude that the components of reproductive success in Daphnia contribute differentially to the fitness of species and interspecific hybrids. The discrepancy between resting egg banks and “active” planktonic populations results not from differential hatching of species but from the reproductive success of ex-ephippial females and the timing and frequency of sexual reproduction of the different taxa.  相似文献

At some stage in their life cycle, most zooplankton in temporary waters produce dormant eggs that assemble in a persistent egg bank to cope with unfavourable conditions. As part of a risk-spreading strategy, only a fraction of the egg bank hatches during a single inundation. Besides this dispersal in time, resistant dormant eggs also disperse in space via vectors including wind, water and animals. The structure and functioning of the dormant egg bank has important consequences for (meta) population and (meta) community structure and dynamics. Here, we merge empirical and theoretical data into a conceptual framework for the study of population and community responses in temporary ponds along a gradient in hydrological disturbance. Overall, we conclude that changes in hydrological disturbance may compromise both the abiotic (i.e. water quality) and biotic (i.e. population and community processes) integrity of temporary pools which is especially relevant in light of ongoing anthropogenic alterations in the hydrology of inland waters.  相似文献

Zooplankton resting egg banks accumulate resting stages of various zooplankton species that are active in different habitats and different periods of the year. As such, hatching of resting eggs from lake sediments may potentially be very useful in zooplankton diversity studies. In this study, we tested whether the efficiency of the cost-effective technique is increased by isolating the resting eggs from the sediment prior to incubation. Isolation of the eggs was advantageous for the overall hatching success (+26% after 36 days of incubation compared to incubation of sediment). Furthermore, isolation of resting eggs makes egg bank diversity analyses less time consuming in two ways. (1) It reduced the time needed for the eggs to hatch with on average 35%. In the isolation treatment all responsive resting eggs hatched within the first 4 weeks of incubation, while in the non-isolation treatment neither the cumulative number of macrozooplankton hatchlings nor the cumulative number of hatched cladoceran species levelled off after 36 days of incubation. (2) In contrast to the non-isolation treatment, where large differences occurred between taxa in incubation time, isolation reduced such inter-specific differences, so that even very short incubation periods kept bias within acceptable limits.  相似文献

Dormant stages (“resting eggs”) produced by cladocerans can persist for long periods of time in sediments and restore populations once the environmental conditions become favorable again. Lake Blanca, a subtropical shallow eutrophic lake, hosts a cladoceran community dominated by small-sized species. Previous studies on zooplankton resting eggs suggested that the cladoceran genera Daphnia and Simocephalus were present, but they had never been found before in water samples. In the present study, we compared a biweekly active community sampling with the resting egg bank (passive cladoceran community) from littoral and pelagic zones. Moreover, we tested the amount of samples required to have a representative reconstruction of the diversity in both compartments (water and sediment). Lake Blanca showed a relatively high cladoceran species richness (24) in the water column, with rapid temporal replacement. Several species were present in water samples during short temporal windows; therefore, to detect these species a strong sampling effort in terms of temporal frequency and spatial distribution was required. Contrary to our expectations, resting egg community showed a lower diversity than the active community; however, we demonstrated that the analysis of resting egg bank composition can help detect general community structure patterns.  相似文献

The existence of egg banks not only ensures the survival of zooplankton through harsh periods, but could also affect microevolutionary dynamics. Whether zooplankton at high latitudes can build up an egg bank in sediments, as occurs at lower latitudes, is still unknown. The distribution and age of viable resting eggs of the calanoid copepod Boeckella poppei Mrázek in sediments of two small freshwater lakes on King George Island were determined by slicing sediment cores at 1-cm intervals. Most viable resting eggs were found near the sediment surface, with abundance sharply declining to very low values at the depth of 5?cm, although eggs were present as deep as 9?cm in the sediments of Yanouhu Lake. The egg abundances in Xihu Lake and Yanouhu Lake were estimated to be 9.2?×?104 and 7.2?×?104?eggs?m?2, respectively. 210Pb dating indicated a relatively constant sedimentation rate (0.023?cm?year?1) in Xihu Lake, which was used to estimate the mean age (46.8?year), the maximum age (195.7?year), and the mortality rate (1.64?% year?1) of resting eggs of B. poppei in Xihu Lake. The accumulation of resting eggs with long-term viability in sediments provided the first evidence for the existence of egg banks in two Antarctic maritime lakes. An egg bank may serve as an overwintering strategy for B. poppei in Antarctica, enhance their ability to cope with random extreme changes, and contribute to their broad distribution.  相似文献

Recent work on the diapausing egg banks of zooplankton, such as Daphnia (Crustacea: Anomopoda), indicates that these eggs can remain viable for decades while, theoretically, DNA can remain intact for even longer periods (i.e. centuries or millennia). We isolated diapausing eggs of Daphnia from a 30 m long sediment core taken from a hypereutrophic, northern German lake (Belauer See), with some eggs found in dated core material as old as 4500 years. Using microsatellite markers, we analysed the genetic structure of the resting eggs dated as old as ca. 200 years, and found that, although levels of heterozygosity remained remarkably stable, significant genetic differentiation (Nei's D = 0.36; F(ST) = 0.15) between recent and 'ancient' resting eggs (including allele frequency shifts and private alleles) was detected. These shifts represent either species-level changes in this complex (i.e. species-specific characters of ephippia are not always robust), or intraspecific shifts in genetic variation, or a combination of both. This study demonstrates that the egg banks of aquatic zooplankton can serve as repositories of both genetic (intrapopulational) and ecological (interspecific) information. The use of molecular markers, such as microsatellites, on diapausing egg/seed banks may open new avenues of enquiry related to tracking the long-term genetic (and/or species) shifts that are associated with long-term environmental changes.  相似文献

Seeds of seven dune species were collected from sand dunes of Lakes Erie and Huron and buried to various depths in a natural sand dune habitat along Lake Huron. The seed samples were then retrieved after varying lengths of time and examined for their germinability and dormancy. Results showed that buried seeds remained viable for at least 2.5 years and had the potential to form a persistent seed bank. Seed banks were larger and longer lasting at greater depths of burial than those at shallow burial depths. The results suggested that failure to verify the existence of effective seed banks in previous studies may be due to insufficient number of samples, shallow sample depth, local population variations, and fruiting events. Several species also possessed a temporary, aboveground seed reserve formed by retention of a small proportion of viable seeds on the previous year's inflorescences. In some species, seeds retained aboveground were dormant and thus capable of forming a persistent seed bank when they entered the soil.  相似文献

Zooplankton egg banks are the accumulation of diapausing embryosof planktonic animals buried in the sediments of many aquaticecosystems. These eggs, which are analogous life history stagesto the seeds of many plants, can survive in a ready-to-hatchstate for periods ranging from a few years to greater than acentury. Their presence in ponds, lakes and near-shore marineenvironments has substantial implications for understandingtrajectories of ecological and evolutionary change. When thesediments of lakes are structured in historical sequence, diapausingeggs extracted from different sediment ages can provide a meansof studying past changes in community or population-geneticstructure. A completely different aspect of egg banks derivesfrom the fact that hatching of diapausing eggs can influence, through what can be thought of as temporal dispersal, populationand community response to environmental change. Eggs hatchingfrom diapause introduce to current environments species or genotypeslaid at times in the distant past. In addition, egg banks createextended generation overlap that can play an important rolein maintaining diversity in a fluctuating environment when differenttypes (species or genotypes) are favored at different times. These distinct aspects of egg banks (i.e., their direct impacton ecological and evolutionary processes versus their usefulnessin reconstructing historical changes), are potentially in conflictbecause for old eggs to hatch, the sediments must be at leastpartially mixed. This same mixing, however, degrades the accuracyof the historical record. Both aspects are possible, however, even within a single lake when sediment-mixing intensity isspatially heterogeneous.  相似文献

The occurrence of a resting egg phase in the life cycle of marine and freshwater planktonic copepods is well documented and receiving increasing attention by investigators. The species generally occur in coastal marine waters, freshwater ponds and lakes in areas that undergo strong seasonal fluctuations, though examples have been reported for tropical and sub-tropical areas not subject to such extreme fluctuations. Typically such species disappear from the water column for portions of the year, but remain in the region as benthic resting eggs. Studies to date have focused on the conditions that promote the occurrence of resting eggs, the factors that affect their survival and hatching from sediments, the existence of egg banks in sediments, and the impact of resting eggs on plankton community structure. Benthic resting eggs of copepods include diapause eggs as well as subitaneous (non-diapause) eggs that are quiescent due to conditions in the sediments. As with other groups of organisms the resting egg phase is viewed as being critical for the perpetuation of species year after year, especially those that disappear from the water column for portions of the year. Some data indicate that eggs can survive for many years in sediments which would expand their influence to evolutionary time scales. This paper summarizes our understanding of embryonic dormancy in marine copepods.  相似文献

The distribution of Daphniaspecies in tropical Africa is poorly known and understood. Daphniaare assumed rare in tropical regions, but systematic studies covering large areas are sparse. We sampled the active community (live zooplankton) and/or the dormant community (diapausing egg banks in the sediment) of 41 standing water bodies in Kenya in search for Daphnia.Overall the dormant communities yielded 11 species of Daphnia, a species richness more than twice the species richness found in the active communities. Dormant community species diversity better reflects the spatial, and particularly the temporal (multi-annual) variation in environmental conditions available to Daphniain these tropical standing waters. Hence, we suggest that the dormant community be taken into account when assessing local zooplankton diversity, especially in fluctuating tropical lake ecosystems, where the presence of each local Daphniaspecies in the active community may be strongly seasonal or erratic. Geographic distribution data from this study are supplemented with previous records of Daphniain East Africa to provide an overview of the known distribution of Daphniain Kenya and neighbouring countries. We also present a detailed key for morphological identification of the ephippia of the 11 Daphniaspecies encountered, complemented with photographs and drawings of diagnostic characters.  相似文献

1. A long‐lived bank of propagules consisting of eggs, seeds and spores is one mechanism that allows aquatic communities to survive drought. A drying (drought) event is, for aquatic organisms in a temporary wetland, a phase from which communities must recover. Such a dry phase is often considered a disturbance but should not be considered adverse or catastrophic for the organisms that have evolved to live in temporarily wet habitats. 2. This paper explores the parallels between the egg bank of zooplankton and the seed bank of aquatic plants as means of survival in temporary wetlands. The resilience of communities in temporary wetland ecosystems is assessed by examining dormancy, hatching, germination, establishment and reproduction of animals and plants from the egg and seed banks of wetlands with a range of wetting and drying regimes. 3. Both the zooplankton and aquatic plants of the temporary wetlands studied rely on their egg and seed banks as a means for surviving drying. These communities recover after the disturbance of drying by means of specific patterns of dormancy, dormancy breakage, hatching, germination, establishment and reproduction. Spatial and temporal patterns of species richness allow resilience through dormancy, as not all species are present at all sites and not all species hatch and germinate at the same time. Multiple generations in the egg and seed bank and complexity of environmental cues for dormancy breakage also contribute to the ecosystem's ability to recover after a drying event. A persistent egg and seed bank allows species‐rich communities to hatch, germinate and develop rapidly once dormancy is broken. Rapid establishment of species‐rich communities that reproduce rapidly and leave many propagules in the egg and seed bank also facilitates community recovery on flooding of a temporary wetland after a drying event. 4. To maintain the diversity of temporary wetland communities through droughts and floods we need to manage the dry and wet phases of wetlands. To conserve a wide range of wetland types, we need to maintain a variety of hydrological patterns across the landscape.  相似文献

Dormancy may be an important aspect influencing the ecology of riverine microfauna, yet fundamental knowledge concerning riverine egg bank communities is still scant compared with that for communities in floodplain habitats. We investigated the microfaunal egg bank communities in slackwater habitats of an Australian floodplain river, and compared them with the communities occurring in nearby floodplain wetlands. This was achieved by taking replicate sediment cores from paired examples of each habitat and later incubating the resting stages within these sediment cores. Results from the study indicated that the egg bank communities in each habitat differed in both composition and structure, with only 12 of the 31 taxa recorded being common to both habitat types. This suggests that in addition to supporting microfaunal persistence in the main channel, riverine egg bank communities represent an important source of microfaunal diversity together with floodplain egg bank communities in river–floodplain systems.

The anostracan Phallocryptus spinosa has an almost exclusively palearctic distribution. The Makgadikgadi Pans area in Botswana represents the only distribution record south of the Sahara. In this ephemeral wetland, it is an important food item in the diet of migrating birds. By studying egg bank characteristics (such as depth and density) and hatching requirements, we investigated the persistence of this sub-Saharan population. At localities in the middle and north basin of Sua Pan, sediment cores were taken along a transect, and dormant eggs were isolated. Densities of the active dormant egg bank ranged from 833 to 31449 dormant eggs m−2, indicating that this species is well established. Most of the dormant eggs were found in the top 4 cm of the sediments, and densities decreased to zero at a depth of 13 cm. Considering the expected low sedimentation rate, the presence of dormant eggs down to 13 cm indicates long-time occurrence of P. spinosa in the Makgadikgadi Pans area. We observed high hatching fractions (up to 85%) at a temperature of 22 °C and a salinity of 5 ppt. A second anostracan species, Branchinella ornata, co-occurred with P. spinosa in our study site. This population also had a large active dormant egg bank (ranging from 6634 to 50557 dormant eggs m−2) with dormant eggs present until a depth of about 11 cm. This pattern indicates a long-time co-occurrence of P. spinosa and B. ornata.  相似文献

Diapausing egg banks of aquatic zooplankton have the potential to remain viable for decades or even centuries, and can thus harbour potentially high levels of genetic variation. Diapausing (ephippial) eggs from the Daphnia galeata–hyalina complex (Crustacea: Anomopoda) in Lake Constance (Bodensee), Germany, were isolated from sections of dated sediment cores, hatched in the laboratory, and established as a clone bank. We used cellulose acetate electrophoresis at four polymorphic enzyme loci (Pgm, Pgi, Ao, and Got) to examine long-term temporal changes in the genetic composition of the hatchling pool. Our results indicate that significant shifts have occurred in the genetic structure of this population, which parallel concomitant shifts in the trophic state of Lake Constance during the past 25–35 years. Here we discuss the utility of egg bank propagules as good model organisms to study microevolution, as related to past environmental change.  相似文献
