The second session of the Barrels II Workshop focused on the function of cortical circuitry in the rodent vibrissa-to-barrel system. The session began with talks by Asaf Keller (University of Maryland), Christopher Moore (MIT), and David Pinto (Brown University). These presentations were followed by shorter talks by Mark Andermann (MIT), Alison Barth (Carnegie-Mellon University), Dirk Feldmeyer (Max Planck Institute), Cathy Garabedian (UCSF), Garrett Stanley (Harvard University), and Simona Temereanca (University of Pittsburgh). Presentations covered several central themes, including the functional organization of cortical circuitry, thalamocortical response transformations, temporal response properties, and the role of vibrissa resonance in high frequency representations. For simplicity, this review is organized by these central themes and does not follow the order of presentations at the meeting.  相似文献

The 23rd annual Barrels meeting was held on the University of California, San Diego campus and highlighted the latest advances in the whisker-to-barrel pathway and beyond. The annual meeting brought together investigators from a dozen countries to present their data in posters and short talks. The meeting focused on several themes, first the barrel system was used as a model to study the consequences that result from alterations in the normal pattern(s) of development. A second session focused on what happens to whisker information once it leaves the layer IV barrel. A third session addressed issues of coding within the barrel system and a final session highlighted the latest advances in the engineering of transgenic mouse lines. The meeting highlighted the utility of the barrel system to study cortical circuitry in the normal and pathological state.  相似文献

Rodents use their whiskers to explore their environment and to make very fine discriminations in textures and sizes of objects. Exploratory "whisking" movements consist of large amplitude, rhythmic whisker protractions that occur at characteristic frequencies of 5-10 Hz. Rodents likely whisk to move their receptor surface over the object they are touching. A fundamental understanding of this important motor behavior and the sensorimotor loops that control it were the focus of the final session of the Barrels Workshop. This session began with talks from David Kleinfeld (University of California San Diego), Miguel Nicolelis (Duke University), and Jonathan Rubin (University of Pittsburgh). These talks were followed by short presentations from Steven Leiser (Drexel University), Marcin Szwed (Weitzman Institute), Ford Ebner (Vanderbilt University), Charles Pluto (Medical College of Ohio), and Elisabeth Foeller (Washington University).  相似文献

The 2008 American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting was held in San Diego, CA, April 12-16, 2008 (http:// www.aacr.org/home/scientists/meetings--workshops/annual-meeting-2008.aspx). More than 17,000 scientists from 60 countries participated in this meeting that was organized by AACR, the oldest and largest organization in the world focused on cancer research. The scientific presentations included more than 6,000 abstracts and 500 invited talks on new and significant discoveries in basic, clinical, and translational cancer research. Autophagy, as pertaining to tumorigenesis and response to anticancer therapies, was undoubtedly a "hot topic" in this meeting. An educational session, a forum, a minisymposium and several other talks dispersed in different sessions had a strong focus on autophagy. All autophagy-related presentations were very well attended and stimulated lively discussions, clearly indicating that the scientific community is greatly interested in this rapidly-progressing area of research.  相似文献

The Electroencephalogram (EEG) is an important clinical and research tool in neurophysiology. With the advent of recording techniques, new evidence is emerging on the neuronal populations and wiring in the neocortex. A main challenge is to relate the EEG generation mechanisms to the underlying circuitry of the neocortex. In this paper, we look at the principal intrinsic properties of neocortical cells in layer 5 and their network behavior in simplified simulation models to explain the emergence of several important EEG phenomena such as the alpha rhythms, slow-wave sleep oscillations, and a form of cortical seizure. The models also predict the ability of layer 5 cells to produce a resonance-like neuronal recruitment known as the augmenting response. While previous models point to deeper brain structures, such as the thalamus, as the origin of many EEG rhythms (spindles), the current model suggests that the cortical circuitry itself has intrinsic oscillatory dynamics which could account for a wide variety of EEG phenomena.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at Sensorimotor Control Project- MIT Harvard NeuroEngineering Research Collaborative.  相似文献

The third Young Microbiologists Symposium took place on the vibrant campus of the University of Dundee, Scotland, from the 2nd to 3rd of June 2014. The symposium attracted over 150 microbiologists from 17 different countries. The significant characteristic of this meeting was that it was specifically aimed at providing a forum for junior scientists to present their work. The meeting was supported by the Society for General Microbiology and the American Society for Microbiology, with further sponsorship from the European Molecular Biology Organization, the Federation of European Microbiological Societies, and The Royal Society of Edinburgh. In this report, we highlight some themes that emerged from the many exciting talks and poster presentations given by the young and talented microbiologists in the area of microbial gene expression, regulation, biogenesis, pathogenicity, and host interaction.  相似文献

A workshop on DNA repair with emphasis on eukaryotic systems was held, under the auspices of the EC Concerted Action on DNA Repair and Cancer, at Noordwijkerhout (The Netherlands) 14-19 April 1991. The local organization of the meeting was done under the auspices of the Medical Genetic Centre South-West, The Netherlands (MGC), c/o Department of Radiation Genetics and Chemical Mutagenesis, University of Leiden (The Netherlands). Local organizers were: D. Bootsma (chairman), W. Ferro, J.H.J. Hoeijmakers, A.R. Lehmann, P.H.M. Lohman, L. Mullenders, and A.A. van Zeeland (secretarial assistance: Mrs. C. Escher-van Heerden and Mrs. R. Bontre). Over 190 scientists participated, and the format of the meeting followed that of the 1987 workshop on the 'Molecular Aspects of DNA Repair' (Friedberg et al., 1987). Plenary review talks in the mornings were followed, in the afternoon, by poster viewing in three or four parallel sessions. Groups of 15-20 posters were discussed in detail, and later on, in plenary sessions, chairpersons of the poster discussions reviewed the afternoons' posters. The principal themes of the meeting were the isolation and characterisation of repair genes and proteins, repair in specific sequences, consequences of defective DNA repair, and new methods for detecting DNA damage and repair. Remarkable progress has been made recently in all of these areas, and many exciting new results were presented. It is impossible to summarize all contributions to this (intensive) one-week meeting. Therefore, and for the sake of coherence, presentations that did not fit easily into any of the general themes of the meetings have not been included.  相似文献

The 2nd US–Japan DNA Repair Meeting convened at the JW Marriott Ihilani Hotel, outside Honolulu, Hawaii, from June 4–8, 2004. In keeping with the tradition of US–Japan conferences the meeting was modest in size comprising 25 participants from each country. The program featured platform presentations from each participant, with lots of time devoted to discussion of groups of related talks. A novel feature of the meeting was the absence of formally designated and previously announced titles for sessions and talks, providing a level of informality that promoted relaxed interactions. Discussion was gratifyingly brisk and informative throughout and was considered to be a highlight of the meeting. All sessions were chaired by the program planners Errol Friedberg and Sam Wilson, who did not present formal talks. The following pages comprise summations of the talks presented, organized into primary topic themes.  相似文献

The 20th annual Barrels meeting brought together researchers who utilize behavioral, physiological, anatomical, and molecular techniques to understand the structure and function of the barrel system. Barrels XX featured talks on the role inhibition has in shaping cortical responses within the barrel system, the molecular cues that influence the development of the whisker-to-barrel system, and the synaptic plasticity that can shape responses within the system. The meeting highlighted why the whisker-to-barrel system is an ideal model to investigate the development of cortical circuitry and how its functioning can influence behavioral responses.  相似文献

Chronic intake of high-fat (HF) diet is known to alter brain neurotransmitter systems that participate in the central regulation of food intake. Dopamine (DA) system changes in response to HF diet have been observed in the hypothalamus, important in the homeostatic control of food intake, as well as within the central reward circuitry [ventral tegmental area (VTA), nucleus accumbens (NAc), and pre-frontal cortex (PFC)], critical for coding the rewarding properties of palatable food and important in hedonically driven feeding behavior. Using a mouse model of diet-induced obesity (DIO), significant alterations in the expression of DA-related genes were documented in adult animals, and the general pattern of gene expression changes was opposite within the hypothalamus versus the reward circuitry (increased vs. decreased, respectively). Differential DNA methylation was identified within the promoter regions of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and dopamine transporter (DAT), and the pattern of this response was consistent with the pattern of gene expression. Behaviors consistent with increased hypothalamic DA and decreased reward circuitry DA were observed. These data identify differential DNA methylation as an epigenetic mechanism linking the chronic intake of HF diet with altered DA-related gene expression, and this response varies by brain region and DNA sequence.  相似文献

Cerebral cortical activity associated with perceived visceral sensation represents registration of afferent transduction and cognitive processes related to perception. Abnormalities of gut sensory function can involve either or both of these processes. Cortical registration of subliminal viscerosensory signals represents cerebral cortical activity induced by stimulation of intestinal sensory neurocircuitry without the influence of perception-related cortical activity, whereas those associated with perception represent both neural circuitry and cognitive processes. Our aims were to determine and compare quantitatively cerebral cortical functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) activity in response to subliminal, liminal, and nonpainful supraliminal rectal distension between a group of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients and age/gender-matched controls. Eight female IBS patients and eight age-matched healthy female control subjects were studied using brain fMRI techniques. Three barostat-controlled distension levels were tested: 1) 10 mmHg below perception (subliminal), 2) at perception (liminal), and 3) 10 mmHg above perception (supraliminal). In control subjects, there was a direct relationship between stimulus intensity and cortical activity volumes, ie., the volume of fMRI cortical activity in response to subliminal (3,226 +/- 335 microl), liminal (5,751 +/- 396 microl), and supraliminal nonpainful stimulation (8,246 +/- 624 microl) were significantly different (P < 0.05). In contrast, in IBS patients this relationship was absent and fMRI activity volumes for subliminal (2,985 +/- 332 microl), liminal (2,457 +/- 342 microl), and supraliminal nonpainful stimulation (2,493 +/- 351 microl) were similar. Additional recruitment of cortical fMRI activity volume in response to increasing stimulation from subliminal to liminal and supraliminal domains is absent in IBS patients, suggesting a difference in the processing of perceived stimulation compared with controls.  相似文献

The assembly of eukaryotic chromatin, and the bearing of its structural organization on the regulation of gene expression, were the central topics of a recent conference organized jointly by the Biochemical Society and Wellcome Trust. A range of talks and poster presentations covered topical aspects of this research field and illuminated recent advances in our understanding of the structure and function of chromatin. The two-day meeting had stimulating presentations complemented with lively discourse and interactions of participants. In the present paper, we summarize the topics presented at the meeting, in particular highlighting subjects that are reviewed in more detail within this issue of Biochemical Society Transactions. The reports bring to life the truly fascinating molecular and structural biology of chromatin.  相似文献
