Music or other background sounds are often played in barns as environmental enrichment for animals on farms or to mask sudden disruptive noises. Previous studies looking at the effects of this practice on non-human animal well-being and productivity have found contradictory results. However, there is still a lack of discussion on whether piglets have the ability to distinguish different types of music. In this study, we exposed piglets to different music conditions to investigate whether the piglets preferred certain music types, in which case those types would have the potential to be used as environmental enrichment. In total, 30 piglets were tested for music type preference to determine whether growing pigs respond differently to different types of music. We used music from two families of instruments (S: string, W: wind) and with two tempos (S: slow, 65 beats/min (bpm); F: fast, 200 bpm), providing four music-type combinations (SS: string-slow; SF: string-fast; WS: wind-slow; WF: wind-fast). The piglets were given a choice between two chambers, one with no music and the other with one of the four types of music, and their behaviour was observed. The results showed that SS and WF music significantly increased residence time (P<0.01) compared with the other music conditions. Compared with the control group (with no music), the different music conditions led to different behavioural responses, where SS music significantly increased lying (P<0.01) and exploration behaviour (P<0.01); SF music significantly increased tail-wagging behaviour (P<0.01); WS music significantly increased exploration (P<0.01); and WF music significantly increased walking, lying, standing and exploration (all P<0.01). The results also showed that musical instruments and tempo had little effect on most of the behaviours. Fast-tempo music significantly increased walking (P=0.02), standing (P<0.01) and tail wagging (P=0.04) compared with slow-tempo music. In conclusion, the results of this experiment show that piglets are more sensitive to tempo than to musical instruments in their response to musical stimulation and seem to prefer SS and WF music to the other two types. The results also suggest a need for further research on the effect of music types on animals.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that the capuchin monkey adrenal (Cebus apella) gland has oscillatory properties that are independent of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) by exploring under ACTH suppression by dexamethasone: (i) maintenance of a circadian rhythm of plasma cortisol and (ii) clock time dependency of plasma cortisol response to exogenous ACTH. The capuchin monkey had a clear ACTH and plasma cortisol rhythm. Dexamethasone treatment resulted in low non-rhythmic ACTH levels and decreased cortisol to 1/10 of control values; nevertheless, the circadian rhythm of plasma cortisol persisted. We found that cortisol response to exogenous ACTH was clock time-dependent. The maximal response to ACTH occurred at the acrophase of the cortisol rhythm (0800 h). These results suggest that the capuchin monkey adrenal cortex may possess intrinsic oscillatory properties that participate in the circadian rhythm of adrenal cortisol secretion and in the circadian cortisol response to ACTH.  相似文献

Studies of crayfish chemical ecology have been conducted in both day and night conditions. This variation may hinder the comparison of data among studies, if the responses by crayfish to chemical cues are dependent upon the time at which the cues are encountered. We tested the hypothesis that responses to chemical cues are dependent on observation time using the red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii. Procambarus clarkii is known to exhibit a light-regulated circadian rhythm, with nocturnal activity peaks. Habitat use differed significantly between non-stimulated periods and periods of exposure to a food stimulus, but no effects of photoperiod (normal vs. reversed) or laboratory conditions (dark vs. light) were observed. The results suggest that, all else being equal, (1) studies of crayfish chemical ecology can be successfully conducted in a variety of experimental conditions, and (2) previous studies conducted at various times of the day should have comparable results.  相似文献

The present study reports new insights into the complexity of environmental drivers in aquatic animals. The focus of this study was to determine the main forces that drive mollusc bivalve behavior in situ. To answer this question, the authors continuously studied the valve movements of permanently immersed oysters, Crassostrea gigas, during a 1-year-long in situ study. Valve behavior was monitored with a specially build valvometer, which allows continuously recording of up to 16 bivalves at high frequency (10?Hz). The results highlight a strong relationship between the rhythms of valve behavior and the complex association of the sun-earth-moon orbital positions. Permanently immersed C. gigas follows a robust and strong behavior primarily driven by the tidal cycle. The intensity of this tidal driving force is modulated by the neap-spring tides (i.e., synodic moon cycle), which themselves depend of the earth–moon distance (i.e., anomalistic moon cycle). Light is a significant driver of the oysters' biological rhythm, although its power is limited by the tides, which remain the predominant driver. More globally, depending where in the world the bivalves reside, the results suggest their biological rhythms should vary according to the relative importance of the solar cycle and different lunar cycles associated with tide generation. This study was designed to test whether the alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionate (AMPA) receptor-facilitating drug, aniracetam, could potentiate photic responses of the biological clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of rodents. Using the whole-cell patch technique, we first demonstrated that AMPA currents elicited by either local AMPA application or optic chiasm stimulation were augmented by aniracetam in the neurons of the SCN. The AMPA application-elicited increase of intracellular Ca2+ concentration in SCN slices was also enhanced by aniracetam treatment. The systemic injection of aniracetam dose-dependently (10-100 mg/kg) potentiated the phase delay in behavioral rhythm induced by brief light exposure of low intensity (3 lux) but not high intensity (10 or 60 lux) during early subjective night. Under the blockade of NMDA receptors by (+) MK801, aniracetam failed to potentiate a light (3 lux)-induced phase delay in behavioral rhythm. Aniracetam increased the photic induction of c-Fos protein in the SCN that was elicited by low intensity light exposure (3 lux). These results suggest that AMPA receptor-mediated responses facilitated by aniracetam can explain enhanced photic responses of the biological clock in the SCN of rodents.  相似文献

Cytokinins (CKs) and light can elicit similar morphogenic and biochemical responses in a wide range of plant species. Contradictory reports have been presented that CKs and phytochrome may have independent or identical mechanisms of action in photomorphogenic processes. These reports, relating to seed dormancy and germination, seedling development and growth efficiency, pigment production, and the photoperiodic control of flowering are reviewed. Based on historical data and recent genetic approaches using Arabidopsis mutants, the possible role of CKs in physiological and biochemical pathways affected by light are discussed briefly. Together with the phytochrome system, CKs may contribute towards entrainment of circadian rhythms and thus participate in photoperiodic signalling. Both light and CKs apparently also participate in nutrient assessment pathways. Current models propose that light and CKs might act independently or sequentially through common signal transduction intermediates to control the same downstream responses. We presently have a poor understanding of the mechanism(s) whereby these signals are integrated at the molecular level and the physiological significance of the apparent overlap between the actions of phytochrome and CK cannot yet be fully appreciated.  相似文献

Photic phase response curves (PRCs) have been extensively studied in many laboratory-bred diurnal and nocturnal rodents. However, comparatively fewer studies have addressed the effects of photic cues on wild diurnal mammals. Hence, we studied the effects of short durations of light pulses on the circadian systems of the diurnal Indian Palm squirrel, Funambulus pennanti. Adult males entrained to a light–dark cycle (12?h–12?h) were transferred to constant darkness (DD). Free-running animals were exposed to brief light pulses (250 lux) of 15?min, 3 circadian hours (CT) apart (CT 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 21). Phase shifts evoked at different phases were plotted against CT and a PRC was constructed. F. pennanti exhibited phase-dependent phase shifts at all the CTs studied, and the PRC obtained was of type 1 at the intensity of light used. Phase advances were evoked during the early subjective day and late subjective night, while phase delays occurred during the late subjective day and early subjective night, with maximum phase delay at CT 15 (?2.04?±?0.23?h), and maximum phase advance at CT 21 (1.88?±?0.31?h). No dead zone was seen at this resolution. The free-running period of the rhythm was concurrently lengthened (deceleration) during the late subjective day and early subjective night, while period shortening (acceleration) occurred during the late subjective night. The maximum deceleration was noticed at CT 15 (?0.40?±?0.09?h) and the maximum acceleration at CT 21 (0.39?±?0.07?h). A significant positive correlation exists between the phase shifts and the period changes (r?=?0.684, p?=?0.001). The shapes of both the PRC and period response curve (τRC) qualitatively resemble each other. This suggests that the palm squirrel’s circadian system is entrained both by phase and period responses to light. Thus, F. pennanti exhibits robust clock-resetting in response to light pulses.  相似文献

We administered a blindness-inducing substance (formoguanamine hydrochloride) to Japanese quail in order to find whether it is effective to induce retinal degeneration in avian species other than the chicken. We also investigated its effects on the photoperiodic response of various organs including gonads and the entrainment of circadian locomotor activity rhythms. Histological observation revealed conspicuous degeneration of the photo-receptor outer segments and pigment epithelium. Behavioural responses of formoguanamine hydrochloride-treated birds to visual stimuli were completely abolished. These results proved that this chemical substance is effective to induce blindness in avian species other than the chicken. In formoguanamine hydrochloride-treated birds, the locomotor activity rhythm was entrained to light-dark cycles and the photoperiodic gonadal response was almost normal, suggesting that the extraretinal photoreceptors remained intact even after the formoguanamine hydrochloride-treatment.  相似文献

The aims of the study were to test whether nocturnal white light can normalize menstrual cycles in oligomenorrheic women, and whether the phase of the menstrual cycle in which light is given is important for the shortening effect. Twenty-five women with long menstrual cycles (35.9–53.4 days on average) were treated for 1–3 cycles, each of which was preceded and followed by at least two untreated cycles. Treatments were 100 watt bedside lights administered for 5 consecutive nights. They centered at three different phases of the menstrual cycle: 6–7th, 14–17th or 23–25th days of the treated cycle (early, middle or late treatment, respectively). On average, the treatment cycle lengths were modestly, but significantly reduced compared to the duration of baseline cycles (more than 11 %). The difference in the effects of the early, middle and late treatment was not significant. However, if middle or late treatments were administered in the latter half of the interval between the menstrual cycle onset and probable time of ovulation, reductions of the treated cycle length were substantial (more than 20 %, resulting in cycles less than 33 days on average; p &lt; 0.001). Other treatments produced only weak (up to 7 %), if any, cycle reductions. Moreover, we found a strong correlation (p &lt; 0.001) between the duration of baseline cycle and differential effect of middle treatment (compared to early or late treatment). Middle treatments reduced treated cycle duration to the normal range in the subjects with shorter mean baseline cycles (&lt;42 days), while in the subjects with longer duration of baseline cycle the shortening effect was produced by late treatments (p = 0.005 and p = 0.001, respectively). The results support the suggestion that a bedside lamp used on nights prior to ovulation can cause reduction of long menstrual cycles.  相似文献

Photosynthesis of Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngb. under continuous saturating red irradiation follows a circadian rhythm. Blue-light pulses rapidly stimulate photosynthesis with high effectiveness in the troughs of this rhythm but the effectiveness of such pulses is much lower at its peaks. In an attempt to understand how blue light and the rhythm affected photosynthesis, the effects of inorganic carbon on photosynthetic light saturation curves were studied under different irradiation conditions. The circadian rhythm of photosynthesis was apparent only at irradiances which were not limiting for photosynthesis. The same was found for blue-light-stimulated photosynthesis, although stimulation was observed also under very low red-light irradiances after a period of adaptation, provided that the inorganic-carbon concentration was not in excess. Double-reciprocal plots of light-saturated photosynthetic rates versus the concentration of total inorganic carbon (up to 10 mM total inorganic carbon) were linear and had a common constant for half-saturation (3.6 mM at pH 8) at both the troughs and the peaks of the rhythm and before and after blue-light pulses. Only at very low carbon concentrations was a clear deviation found from these lines for photosynthesis at the rhythm maxima (red and blue light), which indicated that the strong carbon limitation specifically affected photosynthesis at the peak phases of the rhythm. Very high inorganic carbon concentrations (20 mM) in the medium diminished the responses to blue light, although they did not fully abolish them. The kinetics of the stimulation indicate that the rate of photosynthesis is affected by two blue-light-dependent components with different time courses of induction and decay. The faster component seemed to be at least partially suppressed at red-light irradiances which were not saturating for photosynthesis. Lowering the pH of the medium had the same effects as an increase of the carbon concentration to levels of approx. 10 mM. The amplitude and phasing of circadian rhythms are under discussion as possible predictors of tolerance to night work. In a field study, subjective sleepiness and oral temperature of 147 female nurses were measured at 2-hour intervals during a period with one morning shift and two consecutive night shifts. The nurses also filled out a questionnaire. Two types of tolerance indices were constructed: The “health index” was based on questions referring to general fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, and sleep disturbances, and the “sleepiness index” on the actual subjective ratings of sleepiness. According to the health index, the group with good tolerance had a larger circadian amplitude of the oral temperature rhythm on the day of the morning shift than the group with poor tolerance. However, with regard to the sleepiness index, the corresponding difference between the groups with good or poor tolerance was not significant. The data did not confirm the hypothesis that predicts a quick adjustment of the circadian rhythm when the circadian amplitude is small before the change to night work. 随着湿地生态旅游的发展,水禽面临着越来越多的游憩干扰。骨顶鸡在我国北方大部分地区的湖泡沼泽繁殖,可作为湿地质量的指示物种,探讨该物种对游憩干扰的反应很有意义。在黑龙江省安邦河自然保护区的游憩区和对照区进行了繁殖期骨顶鸡日行为观察,比较分析结果显示:繁殖前期游憩区骨顶鸡的躲避行为显著高于对照区(F_(1,18)=62.364,P0.01);孵卵期骨顶鸡对游憩干扰的反应比繁殖前期更强烈,除了躲避行为显著增加(雄性F_(1,8)=40.653,P0.01;雌性F_(1,8)=32.028,P0.01),还主要表现在雌骨顶鸡孵卵时间减少(F_(1,8)=13.521,P0.01),持续孵卵时间缩短;雄骨顶鸡取食时间峰值增加,取食中断不连续;雌雄骨顶鸡繁殖期行为及对游憩干扰反应有所不同。建议通过改善游憩区的隐蔽条件,以提供躲避空间,提高生境质量,减少游憩干扰的影响。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Current dietary trends show that humans consume up to 40% of their energy intake during the night. Those who habitually eat during the night are observed to have an increased risk of metabolic conditions such as type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Increasing evidence suggest that a biological consequence of eating during the night is a larger postprandial glucose response, compared to meals eaten earlier in the day. However, findings from individual acute postprandial studies have been inconsistent, due to variations in protocols. Therefore, this review aimed to systematically summarize findings from acute postprandial studies and investigate whether postprandial glucose and insulin response at night differs to during the day in healthy adults. This would indicate a possible physiological mechanism linking habitual nighttime eating and increased risk of metabolic conditions. Seven electronic databases were searched in February 2018. Included studies met the following criteria: had a day-time test between 0700 – 1600h, a nighttime test between 2000 and 0400h, the test meals were identical and consumed by the same participant at both day and night time points, preceded by a 3-h fast (minimum). Primary outcome measures were postprandial glucose and insulin incremental area under the curve (iAUC) or area under the curve (AUC). Studies that reported numerical data were included in the meta-analyses, conducted using Stata statistical software (version 13.0, StataCorp, College Station, TX, USA). For eligible studies that did not report numerical data, their authors’ conclusions on the effect of time of day on the primary outcome measures were summarized qualitatively. Full text of 172 articles were assessed for eligibility. Fifteen studies met the eligibility criteria, ten of which were included in the meta-analyses. Meta-analysis for glucose showed a lower postprandial glucose response in the day compared to during the night, after an identical meal (SMD = ?1.66; 95% CI, ?1.97 to ?1.36; p < .001). This was supported by the findings from included studies ineligible for meta-analysis. Meta-analysis also showed a lower postprandial insulin response in the day compared to during the night (SMD = ?0.35; 95% CI, ?0.63 to ?0.06; p = .016). However, findings from included studies ineligible for meta-analysis were inconsistent. Our results suggest poor glucose tolerance at night compared to the day. This may be a contributing factor to the increased risk of metabolic diseases observed in those who habitually eat during the night, such as shift workers.  相似文献

A bee colony is often compared to a multicellular organism, mainly because of its spatial organization. We propose that a temporal organization of equal importance is also present. To support this view, we studied the reproductive processes of two closely related species of stingless bees. Stingless bees enable observations of daily rhythms that are performed by distinct social classes. The emergent process, POP, is cyclic and consists of the building and provisioning of brood cells by the worker bees and egg‐laying by the queen. Colonies were kept in the laboratory under constant conditions with the exit tube opening to the environment; thus, foragers had direct access to environmental cycles. At a later stage of the experiment, the exit tube was closed by a sieve; in this case, bees had their own stock of food, but the environmental LD cycle could still be detected when they were inside the exit tube. Daily POP rhythms were present and showed distinct temporal patterns in each species. A third condition was imposed on one of the species only: the exit tube was closed by a sieve and maintained inside a box that was provided with constant illumination. In this colony, the POP rhythm was perturbed by the destruction of the brood cells. Restoration of POP consisted of a rapid reconstruction of cells followed by a late oviposition in the same day. As different rhythmic patterns were detected, but showed regular timings with respect to one another, an interpretation based upon the concept of an internal temporal order is suggested.  相似文献

The Hierarchical Factor Segmentation (HFS) method is a non-parametric statistical method for detection of the phase of a biological rhythm shown in an actogram. The detection accuracy of this method was measured on actograms showing only circadian rhythms with a constant ratio of signal to noise (S/N). In the present study, we generated 84 types of artificial actograms including circadian or circatidal rhythms by using three parameters: α/ρ, S/N and period length τ, and evaluated the effectiveness of our devised adaptation of the HFS method, the cycle-by-cycle adaptation. The results showed the effectiveness of the cycle-by-cycle adaptation was high even though S/N or τ was fluctuating through a whole actogram. These suggested that the cycle-by-cycle adaptation could be effectively applied to various kinds of rhythmic activity data. Abstract The paper reports the results of the comprehensive study of crassulacean acid metabolism in two epiphytic tropical ferns, Drymoglossum piloselloides and Pyrrosia longifolia. The plants were investigated under different light, temperature and water status. It was found that both species are obligate CAM plants. The diurnal acidity rhythm is due to the fluctuation in malic acid concentration, which accounts for the change in titratable acidity. Besides malic acid, shikimate and oxalate are found to be present, but not contributing to the CAM acid rhythm. The diurnal rhythm of malic acid content results in a corresponding rhythm in leaf water relations. Both ΦΦ and Φtotal, were lowest at the end of the night, i.e. when the level of malic acid was highest. The effects of temperature on CO2 exchange were inverse to those observed in other CAM plants. In both ferns studied, dark CO2 fixation increased when the night temperature was increased. Increase in day temperature reduced CO2 uptake during phase IV and during the following night. The observed responses of the ferns to temperature changes suggest that the in situ environmental conditions are optimal for their CAM performance. In weak light, the plants showed net CO2 output during the midday deacidification period. Increases in light intensity reduced such CO2 output. Under drought conditions, the CO2 exchange in the ferns was reduced to zero within 5–6 d, indicating that the ferns studied are more susceptible to water deficiency than other CAM plants. This could be due to a higher cuticular conductance for water. The results are discussed, in particular, in relation to CAM performance of epiphytes growing in the wet tropics.  相似文献
