The fermentation characteristics of 24 strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and one strain of Candida apicola, C. famata, C. guilliermondii, Hanseniospora occidentalis, Pichia subpelicullosa and Schizosaccharomyces pombe were evaluated for the production of cachaça. They were isolated from small cachaça distilleries (27), industrial cachaça distilleries (2) and one sugarcane alcohol distillery. The yeasts showed significant differences in ethanol yield, substrate conversion, efficiency, conversion factors of substrate into ethanol (Y p/s), cells (Y x/s), organic acids (Y ac/s) and glycerol (Y g/s), and maximum specific growth rate ( max). In general the S. cerevisiae strains showed better fermentation potential, with yields between 83 and 91% and max between 0.450 and 0.640 h–1, several of them being comparable with the high performance yeast used in the industrial production of ethanol, which was adopted as a reference. The non-Saccharomyces strains showed high efficiency, very low ethanol yield and very high Y ac/s and Y g/s values, except Pichia subpelliculosa, which behaved very similarly to the S. cerevisiae strains. Hierarchical Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis showed the fermentation yield (or substrate conversion) as being the variable which contributed most to the separation of the strains into different groups.  相似文献

Forty‐six male train drivers (mean age=46.5, SD=5.1) were recruited to participate in a diary study for 14 consecutive days with questions about their sleep and working hours. A polynomial mixed‐effect regression model showed a curvilinear relation (p <. 001) between shift‐start time and sleep duration for shifts starting at 03∶00–12∶00 h and with a near linear increase for ones starting between 04∶30 and 09∶00 h of approximately 0.7 h for every 1 h the shift was delayed. The longest sleeps were estimated at ~8 h before shifts that started at ~10∶00 h. The shortest sleeps were found for shifts that started before 04∶30 h and were estimated at ~5 h. Individual differences were estimated with a random-effect standard deviation of 0.51 h, independent of shift‐start time (p =.005). One‐half of the between‐subject variance was explained by subjective health. A one‐step decrease in health was associated with a 26 min increase in sleep length. The results have practical implications for constructing shift schedules. Early morning shifts reduced sleep length substantially and should be mixed with later start hours to avoid the accumulation of sleep dept. Delaying the shift‐start past 10∶00 h had little effect on sleep opportunity; however, delaying shift‐start to between 04∶30 and 9∶00 h had a strong impact on sleep length, with 70% of the extra time used for sleep, suggesting large positive effects for this range of shift‐start times.  相似文献

Individual variation in the phase and amplitude of human circadian rhythms is well known, but the impact of heritable factors on such variation is less clear. We estimated the narrow‐sense heritability for selected circadian and sleep timing, quality, and duration measures among related members of the Hutterites, an endogamous, religious community (n=521 participants). “Morningness‐eveningness” (M/E), a stable trait reflecting circadian phase, was evaluated using the Composite Scale (CS). Subjective sleep measures were assessed using the Sleep Timing Questionnaire. Initial analyses reconfirmed the impact of age on M/E. Previously reported correlations between M/E scores and the sleep measures were also noted, demonstrating the construct validity of the questionnaires among the participants. Following corrections for age, gender, and colony of residence, significant narrow‐sense heritability was noted for M/E (23%). The heritability for subjective sleep measures (related to timing, duration, and quality) were statistically significant for all but one variable, and varied between 12.4% and 29.4%. Thus, significant heritable influences on human circadian phase and subjective sleep indices can be detected through family‐based studies. In view of the impact of circadian malfunction on human health, it may be worthwhile to map genetic factors impacting circadian and sleep variation.  相似文献

Two films about the same ethnic minority, the Arhuaco‐Indians in Colombia, have been made; one was made with the method of self‐presentation and the other was based on the self‐reflective method. The purpose of this article is to describe the audience experience of these films, which were shown both to a Western audience and to the Arhuacos themselves. The analysis of the effect upon the audience touches a discussion of the status of subjectivity in anthropology and the anthropologist's advocacy.  相似文献

Protein microarrays are the innovative assay platform for highly parallel in vitro studies of protein–protein interactions. Due to their flexibility and multiplexing capacity, protein microarrays benefit basic research, diagnosis and biomedicine. The fossil record of early hominids suggests that their Arm length, and presumably stature and weight, had a tendency to increase. Using the minimum jerk principle and a related formulation of averaged specific power, ASP, with regard to selected two-joint Arm movements, the current paper explores relationships between ASP, hand trajectory length (or Arm length, or body mass) and mean movement speed, deriving relationships which indicate that ASP is proportional to cubic mean movement speed, but inversely proportional to hand trajectory length (or Arm length, or 1/3 power of body mass). Accordingly, an `ecological niche’ is modeled in a three-parameter space. Either ASP maximization for fixed movement time, or ASP minimization for fixed mean movement speed, taken as selective optimization criterion, allows the increasing of human Arm length during evolution, regardless of the arm-to-forearm length ratio.  相似文献

The benefits of “bet‐hedging” strategies have been assumed to be the main cause of phenotypic diversity in biological populations. However, in their recent work, Healey et al ( 2016 ) provide experimental support for negative frequency‐dependent selection (NFDS) as an alternative driving force of diversity. NFDS favors rare phenotypes over common ones, resulting in an evolutionarily stable mixture of phenotypes that is not necessarily optimal for population growth.  相似文献

Abstract

Four scarab beetles (Acrossidius tasmaniae) and two unidentified weevils were recovered from the guts of a single individual of six deep‐sea fishes trawled from depths of 326–418 m, c. 30–40 km off the Wairarapa coast, North Island, New Zealand. These constitute the first records of terrestrial arthropods in the diet of deep‐sea fishes from the New Zealand region. Possible reasons describing how these terrestrial beetles came to be eaten by these fishes are discussed.  相似文献

The value of selective genotyping for the detection of QTL has already been studied from a theoretical point of view but with the assumption of a negligible contribution of the QTL to the phenotypic variance. For predicting change in gene frequency, we show that this assumption is only valid for less than 0.05 and for a proportion selected higher than 1%. Therefore, we develop a study of the optimization of selective genotyping without assumption on QTL effect, with selection either of both tails (bidirectional genotyping or BSG) or only one tail (unidirectional genotyping or USG). For a given population size of phenotyped plants the optimal proportion selected for selective genotyping is around 30% for each tail. For the same investment as in ANOVA, by investing more in phenotyping than in genotyping when the cost ratio of genotyping to phenotyping is higher than 1, the optimal proportion selected appears to be between 10 and 20% for each tail. It is mainly affected by the cost ratio and decreases when the cost ratio increases. At this optimum, BSG is competitive with ANOVA, or even more powerful, when the cost ratio is higher than 1. USG can also be competitive when the cost ratio is higher than 2. Using experimental data from two populations of about 300 F4 inbred families of maize, it was verified that BSG at the optimum gives the same results as ANOVA or is better whereas USG is less powerful or equivalent.  相似文献

The amplifier hypothesis states that selection could favour the evolution of traits in signallers that improve the ability of receivers to extract honest information from other signals or cues. We provide a formal definition of amplifiers based on the receiver's mechanisms of signal perception and we present a game-theoretical model in which males advertise their quality and females use sequential-sampling tactics to choose among prospective mates. The main effect of an amplifier on the female mating strategy is to increase her mating threshold, making the female more selective as the effectiveness of the amplifier increases. The effects of the amplifier on male advertising strategy depends both on the context and on the types of the amplifier involved. We consider two different contexts for the evolution of amplifiers (when the effect of amplifiers is on signals and when it is on cues) and two types of amplifiers (the ‘neutral amplifier’, when it improves quality assessment without altering male attractiveness, and the ‘attractive amplifier’, when it improves both quality assessment and male attractiveness). The game-theoretical model provides two main results. First, neutral and attractive amplifiers represent, respectively, a conditional and an unconditional signalling strategy. In fact, at the equilibrium, neutral amplifiers are displayed only by males whose advertising level lays above the female acceptance threshold, whereas attractive amplifiers are displayed by all signalling males, independent of their quality. Second, amplifiers of signals increase the differences in advertising levels between amplifying and not-amplifying males, but they decrease the differences within each group, so that the system converges towards an ‘all-or-nothing’ signalling strategy. By applying concepts from information theory, we show that the increase in information transfer at the perception level due to the amplifier of signals is contrasted by a decrease in information transfer at the emitter level due to the increased stereotypy of male advertising strategy.  相似文献

Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in various upland soils show a rather large diversity with respect to their amoA genes (coding for a subunit of the ammonium monooxygenase). It is known that the community structure of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in upland soils is influenced by different selective factors, such as pH, gravimetric water content, fertilizer treatment, and temperature. The question, from an ecological point of view, is whether a particular ecophysiological factor, such as temperature, could select for a particular community structure of ammonia oxidizers in upland soils that would be represented by distinct clusters of the amoA gene (AmoA cluster). Studying the literature, including recent publications and our own unpublished results, we found that AmoA clusters 3a, 3b, and 9-12 apparently exhibited no preference for either subtropical/tropical soils (i.e., warm regions) or temperate cold soils. However, AmoA clusters 1 and 4 (and perhaps cluster 2) seem to occur predominantly in soils from cold-temperate regions. Here we review the evidence for a temperature effect on the global distribution of amoA genes in warm- and cold-temperate soils.  相似文献

Peer review is pivotal to science and academia, as it represents a widely accepted strategy for ensuring quality control in scientific research. Yet, the peer‐review system is poorly adapted to recent changes in the discipline and current societal needs. We provide historical context for the cultural lag that governs peer review that has eventually led to the system's current structural weaknesses (voluntary review, unstandardized review criteria, decentralized process). We argue that some current attempts to upgrade or otherwise modify the peer‐review system are merely sticking‐plaster solutions to these fundamental flaws, and therefore are unlikely to resolve them in the long term. We claim that for peer review to be relevant, effective, and contemporary with today's publishing demands across scientific disciplines, its main components need to be redesigned. We propose directional changes that are likely to improve the quality, rigour, and timeliness of peer review, and thereby ensure that this critical process serves the community it was created for.  相似文献

Three experiments were done to determine if endogenous opioid peptides (EOPs) mediate the effects of photoperiod on release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin (Prl) in ovariectomized (OVX) ewes. Intravenous infusions of 0.5 naloxone X h-1 X kg body weight-1 for 3.5 h increased (P less than 0.01) mean plasma concentrations of LH and decreased (P less than 0.025) mean interpulse interval (period) of LH pulses in OVX ewes exposed to long day lengths (16L:8D). Infusions of either 1.0 or 2.5 mg morphine-SO4 X h-1 X kg-1 for 3 h increased (P less than 0.005) the period of LH pulses and increased (P less than 0.005) concentrations of Prl in OVX ewes during the breeding season. In OVX ewes exposed to long (16L:8D) or short (8L:16D) day lengths infusions of naloxone increased (P less than 0.05) mean concentrations of LH, whereas morphine decreased (P less than 0.01) mean concentrations of LH. These effects were attributed to changes in period of LH pulses (P less than 0.001). The drug X photoperiod interactions were not significant for LH parameters. Naloxone did not affect Prl release in either long- or short-day groups, but morphine increased (P less than 0.001) Prl release during long and short day lengths. The effect of morphine on Prl release was more pronounced in ewes exposed to long day lengths than in those exposed to short day lengths. In conclusion, EOPs inhibit the LH pulse generator in OVX ewes. However, it is doubtful that the EOPs mediate the steroid-independent effects of photoperiod on LH release. The results also suggest that photoperiod may influence Prl release via opiate neurons.  相似文献

Bedtime, risetime, and body temperature of college students exposed to a regular 24‐h life schedule were recorded for 22–25 consecutive days. Average bedtime was 1:37 am, average risetime was 8:53 am, and average temperature acrophase was 5:01 pm.
