Analysis of relationship between soil respiration and environmental factors has become essential for understanding changes in ecosystem carbon cycles under global warming. However, rough predictions have been made that soil respiration will increase with increasing temperature, but long-term data to support this theory were scarce. We measured soil respiration and environmental factors continuously using an automatic open-closed chamber system in a Korean cool-temperate forest from 2004 to 2016 to ascertain the reliability of this prediction and to more accurately predict changes in carbon cycle. Average air and soil temperatures were 11.0°C and 10.2°C. The increase in temperature was greater in winter (the inactive period for soil respiration) than in summer (the active period). Additionally, precipitation decreased sharply because of patter changes in 2012, and through 2016, it was approximately 69% of the previous period. Effect of precipitation on soil respiration was expected to be larger than temperature because the change in precipitation appeared in summer. Soil respiration exhibited a significant decline in 2012 because of precipitation. From 2004 to 2011, it averaged 344.4?mgCO2?m?2?h?1 and from 2012 to 2016 the average was 205.3?mgCO2?m?2?h?1. This phenomenon hasn’t been detected in short-term studies, suggesting that the prediction of previous studies is inaccurate. Additionally, to predict future ecosystem carbon cycle changes in a cool-temperate monsoon climate, changes in precipitation pattern should be regarded as equally important to temperature, and the prediction cannot be based solely on temperature. Therefore, long-term and continuous measurements are needed with consideration of the effects of both precipitation and temperature.

Abstract

In the field of Arctic shipping, Canada and the Russian Federation have enacted extensive unilateral national regulations cognizant of Article 234, UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. On the global level, both states have been important actors in negotiating the International Maritime Organization’s mandatory Polar Code, a legal instrument with implications for regulations at the national level. This article compares and contrasts the approaches, positions, and arguments of Canada and Russia especially regarding national systems to control navigation and vessel-source pollution. The results suggest different emphases stemming from the two states’ political and economic realities and capacities.  相似文献

Two contradicting ideas dominate political discussions of race in the United States. In the first, Americans of all political stripes glory in the idea that the country's race relations have improved, largely due to changes collectively labeled as ‘the civil rights movement.’ Yet when Americans move their gaze to broader issues—often presumed to be beyond “race”—of economics, public education, and civic life, they embrace a second, and seemingly opposed narrative of decline. There, social scientists have wedded this image of social decay into ideas of neoliberalism, which they take to be the state's steady disinvestment in public goods like education, healthcare, affordable housing and transportation. Though the rise of civil rights and neoliberalism have overlapped historically, social scientists have shown determined reluctance to make any connection between the two; and further, few have been willing to see the two processes as interwoven and collaborating in the production of the contemporary political economic landscape. This essay argues that academic neoliberal discourse has unwittingly functioned to relieve civil rights institutions of any responsibility for current racial conditions in the US by taking critical attention away from how federal agencies and local politicians have implemented racial reforms. In the current scenario, neoliberalism is to blame for undermining or retrenching the nation's commitment to racial equality, and civil rights victories are the victim. Ethnographic and historical material on race relations in Fayetteville NC, USA, is presented to argue instead that the relationship between the two turns out to be much more complex.

This study examines a contradictory development in the era of globalization wherein country-specific economic and socio-political institutional environment limits the global flow of technological knowledge and information, particularly in the biotechnology sector. International collaborations for developing new biotechnologies has increased significantly in recent years, but these have virtually bypassed firms in developing countries. The international flow of technologies tends to agglomerate in developed economies particularly in the US, where an appropriate mix of economic choices, social regulation and state action fostered institutional environments that facilitated the development and commercialization of biotechnologies. Moreover, with the heightening competition in the global economy, state and firms of developed economies have evolved into a relationship of close partnership. This shows that, far from being irrelevant, the state remains a political entity that structures the innovation system in order to promote the well-being of its firms. This calls for a re-thinking of the role of the state in technological and economic development, particularly among the developing economies.  相似文献

A new millennium offers an opportunity to think about possible future directions in ocean policy. But such an effort must take account of the considerable changes in the world political and economic system since 1989 - globalization with its rapid transportation, communication, economic interdependence; population increase, increased pressure on the stock of the world's natural resources and spaces, the end of the Cold War but with diffusion of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, and a rise in world environmental consciousness. In this context we must develop patterns of sustainable use, and learn how to implement forward look principles for ocean management such as those propounded by the Luso-American Foundation. However, we have not calculated the political and economic costs or understood how we will achieve outcomes consistent with the principles. These are critical to successful global ocean governance. We understand what must be achieved but not by whom or how.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to examine the prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity, using International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) criteria, in four cohorts of children and adolescents living in Poland in different economic eras: communist economy (1977/1978), crisis of the 1980s (1987/1988), political and economic transformation (1992/1994) and the free market economy (2002/2004). Analysis was conducted on a database including 10,934 records for children of the age 7–18 years. In Poland, in the last 26 years of economic and political transformations, the epidemic of obesity was not noticed but the growing incidence of children and adolescents with body mass deficit was observed (p < 0.0001) (20.2% of girls in 2002/2004 vs. 11.0% in 1977/1978 and 12.1% of boys in 2002/2004 vs. 7.2% in 1977/1978). Lower parental education and a higher number of children in a family resulted in a higher prevalence of underweight (odds ratio [OR] fluctuated from 1.26 to 1.63). The social effects of the political transformation in Poland significantly affected families with low socio-economic status (SES), and especially more eco-sensitive boys. This result is opposite to the trends observed in Western countries and makes an important contribution to the current knowledge of the course of further changes in weight-to-height ratio at a global scale.  相似文献

A conceptual framework is developed and used for improving the livelihood of Sub-Saharan communities faced with multiple stresses resulting from adverse environments, vector-transmitted diseases, and limited food. Ecosocial systems are the units for management. The accumulation of ecological, economic, and social capital is the objective of management, the reduction of maintenance costs is the key strategy, and technologies must satisfy ecological, economic, and social criteria. Interacting social system components are communities, facilitators, scientists, and political as well as administrative organizations. An adaptive approach to management allows flexibility in human and financial resource allocation and results in changes in knowledge and efficacy of management operations. The implementation strategy at two sites in Ethiopia relies on a two-stage procedure. In Stage 1, human and cattle health management set the conditions for development. In Stage 2, the ecosocial system is kept on a trajectory to enhanced ecological, economic, and social capital. In each stage, the assignment of responsibilities leads to four implementation phases. In Stage 1, successful precision targeting of tsetse and drug-based Trypanosoma spp. control increased the economic and social capital at the Luke site in southwestern Ethiopia but threatened the ecological capital because of overstocking and land degradation. In Stage 2, a women’s group living in the outskirts of Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) transformed barren land into a horticultural enterprise to enhance ecosystem service provision, including production of horticultural goods, and increase soil fertility expressed by nutrients and water availability. This article reviews concepts on human livelihood improvement in Sub-Saharan Africa and identifies principles that became important during project execution.  相似文献

BackgroundThe global burden of cholera is largely unknown because the majority of cases are not reported. The low reporting can be attributed to limited capacity of epidemiological surveillance and laboratories, as well as social, political, and economic disincentives for reporting. We previously estimated 2.8 million cases and 91,000 deaths annually due to cholera in 51 endemic countries. A major limitation in our previous estimate was that the endemic and non-endemic countries were defined based on the countries’ reported cholera cases. We overcame the limitation with the use of a spatial modelling technique in defining endemic countries, and accordingly updated the estimates of the global burden of cholera.Conclusion/SignificanceThe global burden of cholera remains high. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for the majority of this burden. Our findings can inform programmatic decision-making for cholera control.  相似文献

BackgroundDespite accounting for approximately one fifth of all acute gastroenteritis illnesses, norovirus has received comparatively less attention than other infectious pathogens. With several candidate vaccines under development, characterizing the global economic burden of norovirus could help funders, policy makers, public health officials, and product developers determine how much attention and resources to allocate to advancing these technologies to prevent and control norovirus.MethodsWe developed a computational simulation model to estimate the economic burden of norovirus in every country/area (233 total) stratified by WHO region and globally, from the health system and societal perspectives. We considered direct costs of illness (e.g., clinic visits and hospitalization) and productivity losses.ResultsGlobally, norovirus resulted in a total of $4.2 billion (95% UI: $3.2–5.7 billion) in direct health system costs and $60.3 billion (95% UI: $44.4–83.4 billion) in societal costs per year. Disease amongst children <5 years cost society $39.8 billion, compared to $20.4 billion for all other age groups combined. Costs per norovirus illness varied by both region and age and was highest among adults ≥55 years. Productivity losses represented 84–99% of total costs varying by region. While low and middle income countries and high income countries had similar disease incidence (10,148 vs. 9,935 illness per 100,000 persons), high income countries generated 62% of global health system costs. In sensitivity analysis, the probability of hospitalization had the largest impact on health system cost estimates ($2.8 billion globally, assuming no hospitalization costs), while the probability of missing productive days had the largest impact on societal cost estimates ($35.9 billion globally, with a 25% probability of missing productive days).ConclusionsThe total economic burden is greatest in young children but the highest cost per illness is among older age groups in some regions. These large costs overwhelmingly are from productivity losses resulting from acute illness. Low, middle, and high income countries all have a considerable economic burden, suggesting that norovirus gastroenteritis is a truly global economic problem. Our findings can help identify which age group(s) and/or geographic regions may benefit the most from interventions.  相似文献

Changes in marine primary production over geological time have influenced a network of global biogeochemical cycles with corresponding feedbacks on climate. However, these changes continue to remain largely unquantified because of uncertainties in calculating global estimates from sedimentary palaeoproductivity indicators. I therefore describe a new approach to the problem using a mass balance analysis of the stable isotopes (18O/16O) of oxygen with modelled O2 fluxes and isotopic exchanges by terrestrial vegetation for 300, 150, 100 and 50 million years before present, and the treatment of the Earth as a closed system, with respect to the cycling of O2. Calculated in this way, oceanic net primary productivity was low in the Carboniferous but high (up to four times that of modern oceans) during the Late Jurassic, mid-Cretaceous and early Eocene greenhouse eras with a greater requirement for key nutrients. Such a requirement would be compatible with accelerated rates of continental weathering under the greenhouse conditions of the Mesozoic and early Tertiary. These results indicate possible changes in the strength of a key component of the oceanic carbon (organic and carbonate) pump in the geological past, with a corresponding feedback on atmospheric CO2 and climate, and provide an improved framework for understanding the role of ocean biota in the evolution of the global biogeochemical cycles of C, N and P.  相似文献

Objectives: Reactive oxygen species, which are implicated in the process of carcinogenesis, are also responsible for cell death during chemotherapy (CHT). Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate exhaled H2O2 levels in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients before and after CHT.

Methods: Thirty patients (age 61.3?±?9.3 years) with advanced NSCLC (stage IIIB–IV) and 15 age-matched healthy cigarette smokers were enrolled into the study. Patients received four cycles of cisplatin or carboplatin with vinorelbine every three weeks. Before and after the first, second, and fourth cycle, the concentration of H2O2 in exhaled breath condensate was measured with respect to treatment response.

Results: At the baseline, NSCLC patients exhaled 3.8 times more H2O2 than the control group (0.49?±?0.14 vs. 0.13?±?0.03?µmol/L, P?2O2 levels independent of the treatment response (partial remission vs. progressive disease). Pre- and post-CHT cycles of H2O2 levels generally correlated positively.

Discussion: The study demonstrated the occurrence of oxidative stress in the airways of advanced NSCLC patients. Exhaled H2O2 level was not affected by CHT and independent of treatment results and changes in the number of circulating neutrophils.  相似文献

The present study aimed to understand how Anatolian ground squirrels, Spermophilus xanthoprymnus (Bennett, 1835), have responded to global climate changes through the Late Quaternary glacial–interglacial cycles. Accordingly, ecological niche modelling was used, together with molecular phylogeography. Using species occurrence data compiled from field observations and relevant sources and the maximum entropy machine learning algorithm in MAXENT, an ecological niche model was developed to predict the potential geographical distribution of S. xanthoprymnus under reconstructed past (the Last Interglacial, approximately 130 000–116 000 years ago and the Last Glacial Maximum, 21 000 years ago) and present (1950–2000) bioclimatic conditions. In addition, using cytochrome b mitochondrial DNA sequences deposited in GenBank and the Bayesian skyline plot in BEAST, demographic events (population fluctuations) were further assessed over the history of Anatolian ground squirrels. Combined ecological niche modelling and molecular phylogeography revealed that S. xanthoprymnus, itself also a temperate (mid‐latitude) species, has responded to global climate changes through the Late Quaternary glacial–interglacial cycles in a fashion converse to that of most temperate (mid‐latitude) species: its range expanded rather than contracted during the glacial periods and contracted rather than expanded during the interglacial periods. In other words, Anatolian ground squirrels have been in refugia during the interglacial periods, suggesting that the classical paradigm of glacial range contraction and interglacial range expansion for temperate species may not be as general as previously assumed. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 109 , 19–32.  相似文献

Purpose

In the booming electric vehicle market, the demand for refined cobalt is showing a blowout growth. China is the largest cobalt-refiner and cobalt-importer in the world. However, the life cycle inventory and potential environmental impact from cobalt refining in China have not been clearly illustrated. This paper builds a comprehensive inventory to support the data needs of downstream users of cobalt sulfate. A “cradle-to-gate” life cycle assessment was conducted to provide theoretical support to stakeholders.

Methods

A life cycle assessment was performed based on ISO 14040 to evaluate the potential environmental impact and recognize the key processes. The system boundary of this study contains four stages of cobalt sulfate production: mining, beneficiation, primary extraction, and refining. Except for the experimental data used in the primary extraction stage, all relevant data are actual operating data. The normalization value was calculated based on the latest released global emission and extraction data.

Results and discussion

Normalization results show that the potential impacts of cobalt refining were mainly concentrated in the fossil depletion and freshwater ecotoxicity categories. The beneficiation stage and the refining stage account for 72% and 26% of the total normalization value, respectively. The beneficiation stage needs to consume a lot of chemicals and energy to increase the cobalt content, due to the low grade of cobalt ore in China. Compared with cobalt concentrate, the use of cobalt-containing waste (e.g., cobalt waste from EV batteries) can ease endpoint impact by up to 73%. With the application of the target electricity structure in 2050, the potential impact of China’s cobalt sulfate production on global warming, fossil depletion, and particulates formation can be reduced by 24%, 22%, and 26%, respectively.

Conclusion

Findings indicate that the chemical inputs and electricity consumption are primary sources of potential environmental impact in China’s cobalt sulfate production. Promoting the development of urban mines can reduce excessive consumption of chemicals and energy in the beneficiation stage. The environmental benefits of transforming the electricity structure and using more renewable energy to reduce dependence on coal-based power in the cobalt refining industry were revealed.

Abstract

Objective: The way how individual bars of sensorimotor insoles influence the gait kinematics is not fully understood yet. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the effect of three sensorimotor orthotic conditions (the medial calcaneal and retrocapital lateral bars and their combination) on the gait parameters in healthy adults during the stance phase of gait cycle.

Materials and methods: Twenty-six young adults performed 20 gait cycles in each condition using their self-selected cadence and provided standardised shoes with the base-sole and the three types of orthotics. A three-dimensional motion analysis system (8 cameras; 200?Hz) was used and a six-degrees of freedom model was applied. The cadence, the stride length, the first peaks of foot external rotation, eversion and dorsal flexion as well as the first peak of hip adduction were analysed.

Results: Significant differences (p?<?0.05) were found for all parameters between the orthotic conditions, except the cadence. Significant difference in the first peak of hip adduction (p?=?0.008) was found between the dominant and non-dominant leg. There were no significant interactions between the factors of condition and leg dominance (p?>?0.05).

Conclusions: There seems to be overall tendencies in immediate changes in ankle joint kinematics caused by all three sensorimotor orthotic conditions and besides the mechanical principles, also ‘proprioceptive mechanism’ seems to play a role. However, maximum observed average angular change was 2° and some variability in reactions to each orthotic condition exists among the individuals. Therefore, clinical relevance of such changes remains unclear and careful analysis of expected outcomes should be the common part of every orthotic intervention.  相似文献

Simulation models are extensively used to predict agricultural productivity and greenhouse gas emissions. However, the uncertainties of (reduced) model ensemble simulations have not been assessed systematically for variables affecting food security and climate change mitigation, within multi‐species agricultural contexts. We report an international model comparison and benchmarking exercise, showing the potential of multi‐model ensembles to predict productivity and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions for wheat, maize, rice and temperate grasslands. Using a multi‐stage modelling protocol, from blind simulations (stage 1) to partial (stages 2–4) and full calibration (stage 5), 24 process‐based biogeochemical models were assessed individually or as an ensemble against long‐term experimental data from four temperate grassland and five arable crop rotation sites spanning four continents. Comparisons were performed by reference to the experimental uncertainties of observed yields and N2O emissions. Results showed that across sites and crop/grassland types, 23%–40% of the uncalibrated individual models were within two standard deviations (SD) of observed yields, while 42 (rice) to 96% (grasslands) of the models were within 1 SD of observed N2O emissions. At stage 1, ensembles formed by the three lowest prediction model errors predicted both yields and N2O emissions within experimental uncertainties for 44% and 33% of the crop and grassland growth cycles, respectively. Partial model calibration (stages 2–4) markedly reduced prediction errors of the full model ensemble E‐median for crop grain yields (from 36% at stage 1 down to 4% on average) and grassland productivity (from 44% to 27%) and to a lesser and more variable extent for N2O emissions. Yield‐scaled N2O emissions (N2O emissions divided by crop yields) were ranked accurately by three‐model ensembles across crop species and field sites. The potential of using process‐based model ensembles to predict jointly productivity and N2O emissions at field scale is discussed.  相似文献

Miconia prasina (Melastomataceae) is an important colonizing species during early stages of secondary succession in Puerto Rico but its abundance declines with increasing stand age. We studied its demography for 2 yr (1995–1997) in three populations across a pasture to forest chronosequence (1‐, 12‐, and 25‐yr old) and in one population in a hurricane‐disturbed older forest (>60‐yr old). Vegetative growth was positive in the two young sites, but negative in the two older sites. The highest percentage of plants that flowered occurred in the two younger sites but highest seed production occurred in the 25‐yr‐old site. Although seed germination occurred in the two older sites, no seedlings established. Vegetative reproduction (root sprouts) was found in all sites, with most sprouts occurring in young sites. The 2 yr of census data were used to construct stage‐based transition matrices. In the two young sites, the average population growth rate was positive (λ > 1), while average population growth was negative in the two older sites (λ < 1). Elasticity, a measure of the effects of proportional changes in life‐history transitions to the long‐term population growth rate, varied across both stages and sites. Elasticity shifted from large plants in young sites to small plants in older sites. Across all sites, elasticities related to survival were more important than those of growth or vegetative reproduction. The demographic analysis supported the previous observations of changes in the density of M. prasina based on the chronosequence and also suggests that establishment via seeds must occur prior to abandonment in active pastures.  相似文献

PurposeThis study optimized our previously proposed simulation program for the approximate irregular field dose distribution (SPAD) and applied it to a respiratory motion compensation system (RMCS) and respiratory motion simulation system (RMSS). The main purpose was to rapidly analyze the two-dimensional dose distribution and evaluate the compensation effect of the RMCS during radiotherapy.MethodsThis study modified the SPAD to improve the rapid analysis of the dose distribution. In the experimental setup, four different respiratory signal patterns were input to the RMSS for actuation, and an ultrasound image tracking algorithm was used to capture the real-time respiratory displacement, which was input to the RMCS for actuation. A linear accelerator simultaneously irradiated the EBT3 film. The gamma passing rate was used to verify the dose similarity between the EBT3 film and the SPAD, and conformity index (CI) and compensation rate (CR) were used to quantify the compensation effect.ResultsThe Gamma passing rates were 70.48–81.39% (2%/2mm) and 88.23–96.23% (5%/3mm) for various collimator opening patterns. However, the passing rates of the SPAD and EBT3 film ranged from 61.85% to 99.85% at each treatment time point. Under the four different respiratory signal patterns, CR ranged between 21% and 75%. After compensation, the CI for 85%, 90%, and 95% isodose constraints were 0.78, 0.57, and 0.12, respectively.ConclusionsThis study has demonstrated that the dose change during each stage of the treatment process can be analyzed rapidly using the improved SPAD. After compensation, applying the RMCS can reduce the treatment errors caused by respiratory movements.  相似文献

Summary

Embryos of the phasmid Carausius morosus Br., deprived of their head at an early stage (V3, 27th day) of development live up to the 147th day when grown on their own vitello-serosal system.

In these embryos, the 2nd embryonic cuticle characteristic of the dorsal closure stage, and the 3rd embryonic cuticle (1st larval cuticle) with its setae and procuticle, both have a typical structure. Thus the cephalic endocrine system of the embryo is clearly not indispensable either for 2nd and 3rd cuticle deposition, or for production of a typical ecdysteroid peak at the dorsal closure, or even for the rise of ecdysteroid level during the 3rd cuticle secretion. But in decapitated embryos this rise is not followed by a decrease as it is in controls.

In both operated eggs and controls, the same free and conjugated 3 hormones were separated by HPLC and quantified by RIA: 20,26-dihydroxyecdysone, 20-hydroxyecdysone (main hormone in the phasmid) and ecdysone.

Very similar quantitative results were obtained for controls and operated eggs at the dorsal closure stage. However, noteworthy differences were found between the two kinds of eggs concerning the respective levels of 20-hydroxyecdysone and of its conjugates during the 3rd cuticle secretion.  相似文献

The causal link between ethnic intolerance and ethnic conflict is tested using four highly comparable data sets from Croatia that span the time before and after the violent dissolution of Yugoslavia: 1984–5, 1989–90, 1996 and 2003. Though most approaches to ethnic conflict posit a social-psychological dimension critical to violent encounters, our analysis provides an unprecedented empirical examination that dispels the commonly held view that ethnic hatred, hostility, and intolerance are the cause of ethnic conflict. After explaining the events and the shifting social, political and economic landscape that precipitated the war, we examine demographic, social structural and attitudinal changes between 1985 and 2003 that are associated with variation in ethnic intolerance, giving special attention to the connection between religiosity and intolerance. Prior to the war people were slow to translate public tensions into personal animosities. We find strong support for concluding that the events of the war itself and especially elite manipulation of public images of these events, are strongly implicated in rising intolerance during the war, and that the war's residual effect has been slow to dissipate.  相似文献

The dynamics of nitric oxide (NO) and peroxynitrite concentration changes during brain ischemia/reperfusion are poorly understood. In this paper, a NO-selective sensor was used to measure NO concentration changes in the rat brain hippocampus during global brain ischemia/reperfusion. Four-vessel occlusion model of transient global brain ischemia was used. Global cerebral ischemia was induced by occluding both common carotid arteries with artery nips (for 20 min) and reperfusion was induced by loosening the artery nips. Results showed that the changes of NO concentration during global brain ischemia/reperfusion could be divided into different stages. Together with the effects of O2 tension changes and NO synthase (NOS) on nitric oxide levels, we determined five stages in the NO concentration profile: (1) acute O2-limited decrease stage; (2) O2-limited steady stage; (3) neuronal NOS activation stage; (4) acute O2-recovery elevation stage; and (5) O2-recovery steady stage. In addition, a chemical reaction network model was constructed to simulate the dynamics of peroxynitrite during the reperfusion stage, and the effects of a change in the NO formation rate on the dynamics of peroxynitrite were investigated specifically. Results show the rate of NO formation has a great influence on peroxynitrite dynamics.  相似文献
