Summary Plant communities containing Juncus squarrosus were analysed in a 100 km2 area at the head of Teesdale in the north Pennines. The method of successive approximation was applied, using quadrats of 1/4m2. Five noda were recognised, and their relation to noda previously described from the Scottish Highlands is discussed. The species-rich Juncus-Nardus nodum on irrigated gley soils, and the Juncus-Festuca rubra-Mnium punctatum nodum on flushed peat, contain many hydrophilic species and together constitute an association called species-rich Juncetum squarrosi sub-alpinum. The species-poor Juncus-Nardus nodum occurs on gley soils poorer in bases, and is probably a facies of species-poor Nardetum sub-alpinum. The remaining two noda, the Juncus-Vaccinium myrtillus and the Juncus-Carex nigra-Polytrichum commune, are found on acid, humus-rich soils, being differentiated by freedom of drainage. They contain little Nardus, but constitute an association called species-poor Juncetum squarrosi sub-alpinum. This occupies a considerable area in upper Teesdale, but differs from similar communities described in the Carneddau of north Wales and in the Scottish Highlands in that Agrostis spp. and Anthoxanthum odoratum are scarce. This is perhaps due to long-continued grazing by sheep.  相似文献

In the proposed nature reserve Vinjekile the vegetation types have been studied by means of transects and vegetation samples. The transects have been levelled, their altitudes related to the National Zero Altitude, NN54. The study area, ca 5 ha, constitutes a bay where a small brook built a delta. Puccinellia maritima was found dominating in different zones from-8 to 40 cm NN54. On gently sloping marshes the Puccinellietum maritimae forms a pioneer vegetation in the lower geolittoral zone, descending towards the hydrolittoral mud flats. At higher altitudes, 30–40 cm NN54, Puccinellia was found in local depressions and associated with Juncus gerardii. The mean lower limit of the Puccinellietum corresponds with the mean annual water level, and forms a zero altitude. The 6 transects also show the horizontal and vertical distribution of Zosteretum marinae, Ruppietum maritimae, Salicornietum strictae, Bolboschoenetum maritimi, Bolboschoeno-Caricetum pa paleaceae, Juncetum gerardii and some other communities which have been described in a synoptic table.Nomenclature follows Lid (1974). The phytosociological classification follows mainly Beeftink (1965). The terms geolittoral, hydrolittoral and sublittoral are used according to Gillner (1960) and Borg (1980).Acknowledgements: I thank the following persons for information and assistance invarious ways; Sigmund Tvermyr, Skien; Per Skjøthaug, Norges geografiske oppmåling; Per Wiik, Bamble Oppmålingsvesen; Kristoffer Hvalvik and Ingrid Hagen. Abstract. In the Rhône delta, Juncus gerardi and Scirpus maritimus are often the dominant species in abandoned rice fields which are artificially flooded in early spring to improve forage production. Under these conditions they occur either in mixed communities, or form monospecific stands. Monitoring the vegetation dynamics in quadrats located in six abandoned rice fields artificially flooded from November to April confirmed the important role of grazing. In ungrazed plots, communities dominated by Scirpus maritimus mixed with Juncus gerardi developed fast. After 42 months of management Scirpus maritimus had established in nearly all quadrats and continued to expand, whereas Juncus gerardi had started to decline. In grazed plots Juncus gerardi alone dominated and continued to increase in cover up to the 42nd month. Scirpus maritimus established at low densities mainly in quadrats where Juncus gerardi was initially absent. Introduction of seeds of Scirpus maritimus in communities of Juncus gerardi under controlled conditions demonstrated the existence of the phenomenon of preemption. The increase in cover of Juncus gerardi suggests that the preemption of Juncus gerardi over Scirpus maritimus plays a more pronounced role in the field in the presence of grazing.  相似文献

Field plots were used to assess the restoration potential of three salt marsh species, Juncus maritimus, Leptocarpus similis and Schoenoplectus pungens, within an established salt marsh near Christchurch, New Zealand. A split-block design was used to asses the effects of soil type, (soil from a proposed marsh construction site or estuarine mud from a natural salt marsh), species and plant source (commercial nursery stocks or natural marsh stock). In December, after 9 months, there was no mortality in L. similis and a significant increase in the biomass compared with J. maritimus. S. pungens failed to regenerate following seasonal die-back. Plant biomass was unaffected by soil type, despite occasional higher salinities recorded in the reclamation soil. Natural stocks had significantly higher biomass than nursery stocks (p < 0.01). These results suggest that both L. similis and J. maritimus are appropriate species for transplanting in the Canterbury region and that the soil from the proposed area is suitable for the restoration and construction of tidal wetlands. The success of the transplants could be enhanced by sourcing hardy stock and management regimes may be necessary to reduce salinity extremes and herbivory by rabbits.  相似文献

TheOmphalotaceae fam. nov., which include the generaOmphalotus andLampteromyces, are defined on the basis of characteristic sesquiterpenes and of their ability to cause white-rot. Anatomical and morphological features of the representatives of these genera support the creation of this new family. The occurrence of pigments, typical of theBoletales, and of cyanophilous spores, indicate membership of theOmphalotaceae in the orderBoletales. Relationships to the other families of this order — especially to thePaxillaceae — are discussed. The possible functional significance of fungal metabolites is considered.

Juncus effusus s. str. has two native representatives on the coast of western North America. A new combination is provided forJuncus effusus subsp.pacificus, ranging from California to British Columbia.Juncus effusus subsp.austrocalifornicus is newly described from southernmost California, Arizona, and Baja California, México. It differs from subsp.pacificus by its pale sheaths, with less thickened and less overlapping margins, and its disjunct distribution. A key is provided for the subspecies ofJ. effusus in North America.  相似文献

On the basis of the present concept of theChlorophyta, a new class, theChlamydophyceae, is established and described. It includes allVolvocales with cell walls, theTetrasporales and thoseChlorococcales with zoospores of theChlamydomonas-type. The diagnostic features of theChlamydophyceae are as follows. Both, flagellates and zoospores have a cell wall with specific ultrastructure which lacks cellulose. The cell wall of the gametes is thrown off before or during fusion. Protoplast divisions are multiple (schizogonic); binary (schizotomic) fissions do not occur. Sporangia and gametangia are formed already on the monadoid level. In asexual resting stages the old cell wall is incorporated into the cyst wall. The polarized structure of theChlamydomonas-like flagellate is ± maintained in non-motile stages. Contractile vacuoles occur in freshwater species, and only sometimes disappear in adult and old non-motile cells; proper central vacuoles are lacking.—From the morphological point of viewChlamydophyceae can be derived from stages in the life cycle ofChlamydomonas. Relationships with theChlorophyceae s. str. and the other Green Algae are discussed.

The taxa of theBolboschoenus maritimus group occurring in Central Europe were studied with respect to morphological differentiation, plant communities and soil conditions. Four morphological types ofBolboschoenus were distinguished, differing in habitat conditions, dispersal and distribution: type 1 —Bolboschoenus maritimus subsp.maritimus with narrow triangular fruits; type 2 —B. maritimus subsp.maritimus with wider triangular fruits, type 3 —B. maritimus subsp.compactus with round convex fruits; and type 4 —B. planiculmis auct. with concave fruits. Strong ecological differentiation of these types was found compared with relatively weak morphological diagnostic features. High discriminant efficiency appeared in the relationship to soil chemistry. Differences were also found in habitat-type spectra of individualBolboschoenus morphological types, which was reflected in their affinities to plant communities. Nomenclature, taxonomic classification, and distribution of these taxa in Europe need thorough revision.  相似文献

The new species Gymnopilus maritimus is described from coastal plant communities of Juncus maritimus, growing on sandy soil or on decaying plants, from northwestern Sardinia (Italy). The distinguishing features of G. maritimus are: (1) an unusual habitat, (2) robust basidiomata, (3) mild taste, and (4) big and strongly warted spores. The new species is compared with the micromorphologically similar species G. fulgens sensu auct. Brit. p.p. and the biogeographically and ecologically similar species G. arenophilus, as well as with other European species. A photograph of fresh material, drawings of the main micromorphological features, and FESEM and optical microscope microphotographs of basidiospores are added. Furthermore, some notes on micromorphological characters of G. arenophilus are presented and its distribution area enlarged with a record from France. A key for the European species of Gymnopilus morphologically, ecologically, and/or biogeographically related to G. maritimus is presented. The phylogeny inferred from ITS rDNA sequences revealed that G. maritimus represents an independent species and that it is not related to G. arenophilus or G. fulgens. It is the sister group of the clade containing G. imperialis and G. spectabilis, but with a bootstrap support below 50%. The characters shared by the species in this clade are: (1) robust basidiomata, (2) pileus fibrillose or scaly-fibrillose, and (3) spores longer than 8 μm, dextrinoid and strongly warted. Gymnopilus imperialis and G. spectabilis differ by the basidiomata with membranous ring in the stem, living on conifers or decaying wood, and having narrower or wider spores, respectively. Summary

One hundred and sixty-two agarics are recorded for Hirta and two from Dùn, two islands situated off the West coast of Scotland in the St. Kilda complex. The agarics are described in relation to the ecological noda proposed by McVean for the higher plant communities of the islands. Omphalina ericetorum and Nolanea staurospora were by far the commonest species: eighttaxa which are not in the New British Check List are recorded from Hirta. An appendix dealing with the taxonomy and nomenclature of the more critical species in the list is given.  相似文献

In order to evaluate host plant performance relative to different soil arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) communities, Andropogon gerardii seedlings were grown with nine different AMF communities. The communities consisted of 0, 10, or 20 spores of Glomus etunicatum and 0, 10, or 20 spores of Glomus intraradices in all possible combinations. Spores were produced by fungal cultures originating on A. gerardii in a serpentine plant community; seeds of A. gerardii were collected at the same site. The experiment was performed in the greenhouse using a mixture of sterilized serpentine soil and sand to which naturally occurring non-mycorrhizal microbes were added. There was no difference in root AMF colonization rates between single species communities of either G. etunicatum or G. intraradices, but G. intraradices enhanced plant growth and G. etunicatum did not. However, plants grew larger with some combinations of G.␣intraradices plus G. etunicatum than with the same quantity of G. intraradices alone. These results suggest the potential for niche complementarity in the mycorrhizal fungi. That G. etunicatum only increased plant growth in the presence of G. intraradices could be illustrative of why AMF that appear to be parasitic or benign when examined in isolation are maintained within multi-species mycorrhizal communities in nature.  相似文献

The alliance Caricion bicolori-atrofuscae comprises plant communities of more or less wet calcareous fens on shallow peat with a high base saturation, occurring in arctic as well as alpine, more seldom subalpine areas. The characteristic species are presented and compared with those from communities of the Caricion lavallianae growing in lowland and mountain sites of temperate and boreal calcareous fens.An abbreviated ecological characteristic is given and the contact communities of the different community complexes are pointed out. The regional floristic differences within the communities are shown, and the geographical distribution and regional frequency of the differentiated associations are given. The synsystematic ranks of three central European mountain to alpine associations are discussed in detail (Caricetum frigidae, Juncetum alpini, Equiseto-Typhetum minimi). They should be excluded from this alliance.Generally, the alpine phytocoenoses are more often invaded by species from neighbouring communities, presumably as an effect of competition in sites less favouring fen development in comparison to the oro-arctic and arctic sites, especially those with an oceanic to suboceanic climate. We conclude, that the observed floristic differences are mainly caused by historical processes and not by the different ecology of the sites in question. This must be taken into consideration when discussing the synsystematic delimitation and rank of the corresponding communities.Nomenclature follows: Lid (1974), Nyholm (1954–68). Acknowledgement. Atlantic subhalophilous communities are habitats of high conservation value that are seriously threatened by plant invasions. The dioecious alien shrub Baccharis halimifolia L. (Asteraceae) is among the most aggressive invaders in estuarine communities in Europe, especially in sea rush communities of Juncus maritimus. We investigated the growth and flowering phenology of B. halimifolia through fine-scale environmental gradients, and we assessed the intersexual differentiated responses. We monitored 120 individuals of B. halimifolia growing in rush communities differing in salinity and waterlogging through one growing season in Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. Ground water salinity and water table level were also recorded. Overall, B. halimifolia shoot growth occurred from May to December and flowering in late August, but males flowered earlier than females. However, we found high intrapopulation and intersexual variation in the phenology of B. halimifolia, related to fine-scale variations in edaphic conditions. Growth rate and leaf production were lower in high-salinity rush communities. Females and males showed different phenological responses to environmental conditions. Females appeared to be more sensitive to salinity than males, but males experienced higher levels of attack by natural enemies. The implications for the invasiveness and management of sea rush communities are discussed.  相似文献

BothNeuradoideae andChrysobalanoideae seem rust-free. TheSpiraeoideae andPomoideae are heavily susceptible toGymnosporangium rusts. While thePrunoideae resemble theRosoideae in being vulnerable to attacks ofPuccinia species, they are additionally susceptible toTranzschelia andThekopsora, whereas theRosoideae are characteristically afflicted byPhragmidium.—It is suggested (a) to treat theChrysobalanoideae as a separate family (Chrysobalanaceae), (b) to transferDryas from theRosoideae-Potentilleae-Dryadinae to theRosoideae-Cercocarpeae, and (c) to divide theRosoideae into two main groups of tribes: (i) the rust-freeKerrieae andCercocarpeae with x = 9, and (ii) the rust-susceptiblePotentilleae, Ulmarieae, Roseae andSanguisorbeae with x = 7.  相似文献

Juncus acutus and J. maritimus are two colonizers of coastal marsh rangeland with worldwide distribution. We tested the effect of salt, temperature, and photoperiod on the germination capacity of seeds of the two Juncus from the Rhône delta (south of France). We measured the first day of germination, the mean time, speed, and rate of germination on seeds subjected to five salinity levels, three Dark–Light temperatures and two D-L photoperiods (12–12 and 10–14). The 10–14 D-L photoperiod, although it corresponds to one of the two main germination periods of J. acutus and J. maritimus in the northern Mediterranean, has never been previously used to study their germination capacity. Analyses showed significant effects of salinity and temperature on the germination parameters tested, and for these two factors we found results comparable to those of previous studies. Salinity slowed down and reduced the germination process while spring temperatures had a positive effect. A surprising result was obtained by changing the D-L photoperiod from 12–12 to 10–14 which then largely buffered the negative effect of salt and high temperatures on germination. This capacity of J. acutus and J. maritimus to withstand salty conditions during the germination phase due to the spring photoperiod could be decisive in the ability of both species to colonize saline environments.  相似文献

Starch breakdown and respiratory O2 uptake in the green algaDunaliella tertiolecta (Butcher) are stimulated not only by blue, but also by red light. In the present study, attempts are described to identify the photoreceptor(s) involved. Fluence rate-response curves with different slopes in the ultraviolet (UV)/blue and in the red spectral region as well as differences in the kinetics and in the unfluence of dark pre-incubation on the stimulation of respiratory O2 uptake by blue and red light strongly indicate the action of two photoreceptors. Since the effect of red light shows some far-red reversibility, and since simultaneous irradiation with red and far-red light decreases the effectiveness of red light, the involvement of phytochrome — in addition to the UV/blue photoreceptor(s) — is suggested in the light-stimulated respiration inDunaliella.Abbreviation UV ultraviolet  相似文献

Chromosome numbers of 42 species and 3 varieties from 24 genera of theAnnonaceae have been determined (Table 1); reports for 15 of the genera are new. Among Asian genera 2n = 14 occurs only in the specializedMezzettia, while 2n = 16 is wide-spread and also has been found inAnaxagorea with some primitive characters. 2n = 18 is reported for 11 genera, and tetraploidy (2n = 36) has been observed inPolyalthia. Therefore, an original basic number of x = 8 or x = 9 is suggested at least for the Asian genera of theAnnonaceae.—Cytotaxonomical notes on the critical speciesPolyalthia rumphii andP. affinis are given, and the new combinationNeouvaria parallelivenia (Boerl.)Okada & Ueda is proposed.  相似文献

The pollen fertility and seed formation of six species of theOrnithogalum umbellatum/angustifolium complex and of seven related species were studied. Four types of pollen grains could be recognized. The pollen fertility varied greatly in this complex and is not related to the ploidy level. The seed formation ofO. umbellatum showed an adaptation to a subcontinental-Mediterranean climate, that ofO. angustifolium to an Atlantic climate. In both cases raindrops seem to be important for pollination, in view of the absence of insect pollinators. After open pollination 113 seedlings were obtained in four species. Their chromosome numbers were determined. Nearly all the cultivated seedlings were aneuploid, which points to a positive selection of euploids in nature, because aneuploid individuals are rare in the wild.Biosystematic Studies on theOrnithogalum umbellatum/angustifolium Complex III.—Previous parts of this series are Part I: Taxonomy. The chromosome numbers of nearly all species of the grass subtribesAristaveninae andAirinae from Europe and northern Africa are presented. Among theAristaveninae the genusAristavena has 2n = 14 chromosomes, whereasDeschampsia forms a polyploid series with the basic number x = 13. In the subtribeAirinae the basic number x = 7 predominates.Avenella includes a polyploid series up to dekaploidy, whilst the lowest diploid value so far known in grasses — caused by descending dysploidy — exists in the annual generaAiropsis andPeriballia with 2n = 8.From both subtribes 12 different karyotypes are described and depicted as idiograms. The basic karyotypes ofCorynephorus, Periballia andVahlodea differ from each other by different chromosome length. SAT-chromosomes in theAirinae vary somewhat. Some marker chromosomes eludicate phylogenetic relationships. Amphiplasty appears in various genera and was studied particularly in the amphidiploidAira caryophyllea. Karyological and genomatic trends are considered in relation to evolutionary strategies of annuals and perennials. The nuclear DNA content of some species has been determined cytophotometrically. In subtribeAirinae a positive correlation exists between chromosome volume, pollen diameter, and DNA content. A comparison of the duration of microsporogenesis and microgametogenesis in annual and perennial species with their nuclear DNA content has shown that a primary nucleotypic influence is not recognizable.

A new stomatal type—paracytic mesoperigenous—which has not been separated from the paracytic mesogenous type in previous studies of theChenopodiaceae, is described. The frequent occurrence of this previously unknown paracytic mesoperigenous type in this family is demonstrated. As a result a new phylogenetic pathway between anisocytic mesoperigenous and paracytic mesogenous types may be drawn.  相似文献
