1. Fatty acid composition of five main phospholipids of vertebrate brain myelin and synaptosomal proteolipids and membranes was studied. 2. Higher content of monoenoic and lower content of saturated and polyenoic fatty acids was found to be characteristic of phospholipids from myelin and myelin proteolipids as compared to phospholipids from synaptosomal proteolipids and membranes of vertebrates (from fishes to mammalians). Fatty acid composition of phospholipids of proteolipid complexes and of the membranes, from which they were isolated, were found to be similar in various species studied. 3. Microviscosity was found to be higher in myelin as compared to synaptosomal membranes of frog Rana temporaria and in rabbit Lepus cuniculus. It appears to be due to the difference in proteolipid content and in lipid composition of myelin and synaptosomal membranes.  相似文献

Summary The compositional properties of DNAs from 122 species of fishes and from 18 other coldblooded vertebrates (amphibians and reptiles) were compared with those from 10 warm-blooded vertebrates (mammals and birds) and found to be substantially different. Indeed, DNAs from cold-blooded vertebrates are characterized by much lower intermolecular compositional heterogeneities and CsCl band asymmetries, by a much wider spectrum of modal buoyant densities in CsCl, by generally lower amounts of satellites, as well as by the fact that in no case do buoyant densities reach the high values found in the GC-richest components of DNAs from warm-blooded vertebrates.In the case of fish genomes, which were more extensively studied, different orders were generally characterized by modal buoyant densities that were different in average values as well as in their ranges. In contrast, different families within any given order were more often characterized by narrow ranges of modal buoyant densities, and no difference in modal buoyant density was found within any single genus (except for the genusAphyosemion, which should be split into several genera).The compositional differences that were found among species belonging to different orders and to different families within the same order are indicative of compositional transitions, which were shown to be essentially due to directional base substitutions. These transitions were found to be independent of geological time. Moreover, the rates of directional base substitutions were found to be very variable and to reach, in some cases, extremely high values, that were even higher than those of silent substitutions in primates. The taxonomic and evolutionary implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

A total of 245 strains of Listeria monocytogenes were investigated. These strains were isolated from human and animal cases of listeriosis as well as from different kinds of raw and processed foods. Thirty-three electrophoretic types (ETs) were identified among the 245 strains. The strains investigated included all human clinical strains isolated in Denmark during 1989 and 1990. Seventy-three percent of the strains isolated in this period were assigned to one of only two ETs (ET 1 and ET 4). ET 1, which was found to be the most frequently occurring ET among strains isolated from human clinical cases, was also found to occur rather frequently in animal clinical cases. ET 1 was, however, found only sporadically among strains isolated from foods and food factories. The data indicate that there might be something distinctive about the physiology or ecology of the ET 1 clone which makes it more likely to bring about disease in human beings either because of high pathogenicity or because of a special ability to multiply to infectious doses in processed foods. Another type, designated ET 4, was found to be the next most frequently occurring ET, after ET 1, among human clinical isolates. This could be explained by the fact that ET 4 was found to be the most frequently occurring ET within food isolates.  相似文献

Twenty-four of 63 enteric Gram-negative organisms (38.1%) which were isolated from 35 apparently healthy Nigerian students were found to have low trimethoprim resistance (MIC less than 1000 mg/l). These isolates were also found to be resistant to several other antibiotics and trimethoprim resistance was found to be transferable from 15 (62.5%) of the trimethoprim resistant organisms into E. coli EC 1005. It is likely that the high percentage of trimethoprim resistance encountered in this study is related to the high rate of resistance transfer which was observed.  相似文献

Crude metabolites of 21 of 60 fungal cultures isolated from some of the common cereals collected from different parts of India were found to be toxic. Of these toxin-producing fungi, 79% caused hepatic pathology of varying severity in mice. Serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase values and blood urea nitrogen were found to be high in such experimental animals.  相似文献

Biliproteins were extracted from representatives of the Cyanophyta, Rhodophyta, and Cryptophyta and purified. Both purified and crude biliproteins were used to stimulate rabbit antibody directed specifically against the biliproteins. The antigenic and immunogenic inter-relationships of these proteins were investigated by the Ouchterlony double diffusion technique. C-phycocyanins from all sources were found to be antigenically and immunogenically related and apparently also related to allophycocyanin but not to any of the phycoerythrins. Larger antigenic differences among phycoerythrins from different groups of algae were discovered. The role of aggregation of the individual biliproteins in their immunochemistry was characterized. Attempts were made to determine the phylogenetic significance of these results. The immunochemical aspects of the biliproteins were striking in that protein antigens from vastly different cell types were found to be closely related. This relationship may be interpreted as supporting the suggestion that Rhodophyta evolved from Cyanophyta or from some common ancestral stock.  相似文献

Streptococci were isolated from dental plaque samples collected from 25 animals representing 18 species. Strains were characterized by biochemical, physiological and serological tests. Extracellular polysaccharide-producing strains of Streptococcus mutans, Str. sanguis and Str. salivarius were found to be confined mainly to primate species. Streptococcus mutans was not widely distributed, being isolated from 2 of 18 animal species. Enterococci were isolated from the mouths of about one-third of the animals, whilst Str. bovis was found mainly in the herbivores. Strains resembling Str. mitior were isolated from most animals. Of 271 strains. 34 could not be allocated to any known species. Streptococci known to be associated with diseases of animals, especially those belonging to Lancefield group C, were not isolated. A few strains representing Lancefield groups D, L, G and M were found, but with low frequency.  相似文献

Fragments of 419 bp of the UL16 open reading frame from 73 psittacid herpesviruses (PsHVs) from the United States and Europe were sequenced. All viruses caused Pacheco's disease, and serotypes of the European isolates were known. A phylogenetic tree derived from these sequences demonstrated that the PsHVs that cause Pacheco's disease comprised four major genotypes, with each genotype including between two and four variants. With the exception of two viruses, the serotypes of the virus isolates could be predicted by the genotypes. Genotypes 1 and 4 corresponded to serotype 1 isolates, genotype 2 corresponded to serotype 2 isolates, and genotype 3 corresponded to serotype 3 isolates. The single serotype 4 virus mapped to genotype 4. DNA from a virus with a unique serotype could not be amplified with primers that amplified DNA from all other PsHVs, and its classification remains unknown. Viruses representing all four genotypes were found in both the United States and Europe, and it was therefore predicted that serotypes 1, 2, and 3 were present in the United States. Serotype 4 was represented by a single European isolate that could not be genetically distinguished from serotype 1 viruses; therefore, the presence of serotype 4 in the United States could not be predicted. Viruses of genotype 4 were found to be the most commonly associated with Pacheco's disease in macaws and conures and were least likely to be isolated in chicken embryo fibroblasts in the United States. All four genotypes caused deaths in Amazon parrots, but genotype 4 was associated with Pacheco's disease only in Amazons in Europe. Genotypes 2, 3, and 4, but not 1, were found in African grey parrots. Although parrots from the Pacific distribution represent a relatively small percentage of the total number of birds with Pacheco's disease, all four genotypes were found to cause disease in these species.  相似文献

Wheat crops were surveyed in Yorkshire from 1944 to 1946 on farms where crops were reported to be unsatisfactory. Take-all ( Ophiobolus graminis (Sacc.) Sacc.) and eyespot ( Cercosporella herpotrichoides Fron.) were both found to be present; the latter is the most serious trouble on the better wheat lands.
The variation in the incidence of these diseases on selected farms during the three seasons has been compared.
The effect of rotation has been examined; both diseases were found to be encouraged by too frequent cropping with wheat or barley. The incidence of disease in wheat crops following a 1-year seeds ley was found to be influenced by the nurse crop used to undersow the seeds, and also by the time at which the ley was ploughed up. Oats were found to be preferable to either wheat or barley as a nurse crop, and in 1946 late ploughing considerably reduced the amount of eyespot disease present in the following wheat crop.
A 1-year ley is considered to be of too short a duration to ensure the disappearance from the soil of Ophiobolus graminis and Cercosporella herpotrichoides surviving from the previous crop, and a period of 2–3 years is suggested as being desirable.  相似文献

The distribution of the R-r-i blood group system was studied in eight breeds of Australian sheep. The recessive i gene was found to be absent from Merinos and, consequently, the i phenotype was absent in Merino crosses. Distribution of the groups in Dorset Horns and Ryelands was found to be strikingly different from that of other breeds. Two animals were found to have anti-r antibodies in serum.  相似文献

The data on infestation of 8 species of commercial fishes from Saya-de-Malya bank (the Indian Ocean) are presented. 43 helminth species were identified: 10 Monogenea species, 18 trematode, 7 cestode and 8 nematode species. The mature worms are observed to be related to a certain host, whereas the nematode and cestode larvae have wide specificity. High infestation degree by Anisakis larvae is found in fishes, especially in Carangidae. At the bank area fishes are found to be free from Acanthocephala while those Acanthocephala are found in fishes from other areas of the Indian Ocean which may be attributed to the specific diet at the Saya-de-Malya bank. On the whole the helminth fauna of fishes examined at the Saya-de-Malya bank does not demonstrate the endemic pattern. The most specific helminth species were found in some fish species.  相似文献

Genetic analysis of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) from cases of mother-to-infant transmission were analyzed in an effort to provide insights into the viral selection that may occur during transmission, as well as the timing and source of transmitted viruses. HIV-1 env genes obtained from seven mothers and their perinatally infected infants in Sweden were studied. Five envelope sequence clades (A to E) were found to be represented. We used a heteroduplex tracking assay (HTA) to assess the genetic relatedness between early viral isolates from the infants and serial maternal virus populations taken during pregnancy and at delivery. HTA findings were used to select for DNA sequence analysis maternal virus populations that were either closely or more distantly related to the infant virus. In each case, nucleotide sequence analysis confirmed the genetic relationships inferred by the HTA. Only maternal peripheral blood was sampled, and large sets of maternal specimens throughout pregnancy were generally not available. However, no consistent correlation was found to support the hypothesis that infant viruses should match blood-derived maternal virus genotypes found early in pregnancy if infants were found to be infected at birth or, conversely, that infant viruses should match blood-derived maternal virus genotypes found at delivery if infants were found to be infected only some time later.  相似文献

A study was made of 32 nonpathogenic myxobacterial isolates obtained from a variety of fish taken in the Pacific Northwest. Morphological, cultural, biochemical, and serological studies were carried out on these strains. All were found to be members of the genus Cytophaga. Two myxobacterial strains pathogenic to fish were also included in this study for comparative purposes. These pathogenic organisms were found to be culturally and physiologically similar to some of the nonpathogenic strains. Antiserum against the pathogenic species, however, showed no cross agglutination when tested against the other myxobacterial isolates. As a result, serological procedures appear promising as a rapid means for distinguishing pathogenic myxobacteria from one another and from saprophytic myxobacteria commonly found on fish.  相似文献

Carotenoids of 20 species of dragonflies (including 14 species of Anisoptera and six species of Zygoptera) were investigated from the viewpoints of comparative biochemistry and chemical ecology. In larvae, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein, and fucoxanthin were found to be major carotenoids in both Anisoptera and Zygoptera. These carotenoids were assumed to have originated from aquatic insects, water fleas, tadpoles, and small fish, which dragonfly larvae feed on. Furthermore, β-caroten-2-ol and echinenone were also found in all species of larvae investigated. In adult dragonflies, β-carotene was found to be a major carotenoid along with lutein, zeaxanthin, β-caroten-2-ol, and echinenone in both Anisoptera and Zygoptera. On the other hand, unique carotenoids, β-zeacarotene, β,ψ-carotene (γ-carotene), torulene, β,γ-carotene, and γ,γ-carotene, were present in both Anisoptera and Zygoptera dragonflies. These carotenoids were not found in larvae. Food chain studies of dragonflies suggested that these carotenoids originated from aphids, and/or possibly from aphidophagous ladybird beetles and spiders, which dragonflies feed on. Lutein and zeaxanthin in adult dragonflies were also assumed to have originated from flying insects they feed on, such as flies, mosquitoes, butterflies, moths, and planthoppers, as well as spiders. β-Caroten-2-ol and echinenone were found in both dragonfly adults and larvae. They were assumed to be metabolites of β-carotene in dragonflies themselves. Carotenoids of dragonflies well reflect the food chain during their lifecycle.  相似文献

A number of biochemical parameters of glutamine synthetase (EC 6.3.1.2) isolated from the cyanobacterium Anabaena 7120 were determined. Apparent Michaelis constants for glutamate and ATP were found to be 2.1 and 0.32 mM, respectively; that for ammonia was found to be below 20 microM, significantly lower than that reported for glutamine synthetases from other species. Serine, alanine, glycine, cysteine, aspartic acid, methionine sulfone, and methionine sulfoximine were found to inhibit the enzyme. The enzyme is controlled neither by adenylylation nor by feedback inhibition by glutamine, mechanisms found in some other prokaryotes. It must therefore be regulated by a different mechanism, possibly a combination of feedback by alanine, serine, and glycine, metabolites which are especially effective in inhibiting Anabaena glutamine synthetase.  相似文献

The use of antibiotic resistance analysis (ARA) for microbial source tracking requires the generation of a library of isolates collected from known sources in the watershed. The size and composition of the library are critical in determining if it represents the diversity of patterns found in the watershed. This study was performed to determine the size that an ARA library needs to be to be representative of the watersheds for which it will be used and to determine if libraries from different watersheds can be merged to create multiwatershed libraries. Fecal samples from known human, domesticated, and wild animal sources were collected from six Virginia watersheds. From these samples, enterococci were isolated and tested by ARA. Based on cross-validation discriminant analysis, only the largest of the libraries (2,931 isolates) were found to be able to classify nonlibrary isolates as well as library isolates (i.e., were representative). Small libraries tended to have higher average rates of correct classification, but were much less able to correctly classify nonlibrary isolates. A merged multiwatershed library (6,587 isolates) was created and was found to be large enough to be representative of the isolates from the contributing watersheds. When isolates that were collected from the contributing watersheds approximately 1 year later were analyzed with the multiwatershed library, they were classified as well as the isolates in the library, suggesting that the resistance patterns are temporally stable for at least 1 year. The ability to obtain a representative, temporally stable library demonstrates that ARA can be used to identify sources of fecal pollution in natural waters.  相似文献

The present study investigated the amylose content and the gelatinization properties of various potato starches extracted from different potato cultivars. These potato starches were used to prepare edible films. Physical and mechanical properties of the films were investigated. The crystallinity of selected native starches and edible films made of the same starches were determined by X-ray diffraction. The amylose content of potato starches varied between 11.9 and 20.1%. Gelatinization of potato starches in excess water occurred at temperatures ranging from 58 to 69 degrees C independently of the amylose content. The relative crystallinity was found to be around 10-13% in selected native potato starches with low, medium, and high amylose content. Instead, films prepared from the same potato starches were found to be practically amorphous having the relative crystallinity of 0-4%. The mechanical properties and the water vapor permeability of the films were found to be independent of the amylose content.  相似文献

Bloodfilms were collected from 491 bats representing 12 of the 15 species of British bats, from a number of sites in England and Scotland, and examined for haematozoa. Trypanosoma (Schizotrypanum ) sp. were found in Pipistrelluspipistrellus, Nyctalus noctula, N. leisleri, Eptesicus serotinus and Myotis brandtii , and Trypanosoma (Megatrypanum) incertum was found in P. pipistrellus. Both subgenera of trypanosomes appear to be transmitted by the bat bug Cimex pipistrelli. Gametocytes of the haemoproteid Poly-chromophilus murinus were found in one-third of Myotis daubentonii examined, and stages of the parasite were found in the vector, the wingless blood-sucking fly, Nycteribia kolenatii , collected from these bats. The piroplasm Babesia vesperuginis was found in the blood of P. pipistrellus and Myotis mystacinus , and was the only parasite to show evidence of pathogenicity to bats.  相似文献
