We investigated changes in incubation behaviour induced by body fuel depletion in incubating female common eiders, which, in contrast to pelagic seabirds, fast despite being close to marine food sources. In the Svalbard Archipelago, electronic scales were placed under eider nests and the incubation of six birds was prolonged by using wax-filled eggs. Based on changes in the rate of body mass loss in normally incubating females and in ten captive birds that did not incubate, body reserves neared depletion on average four days after hatching. During prolonged incubation, females took more frequent and longer recesses. Nest attentiveness consequently decreased, but was still high. In contrast to recesses during normal incubation, during which body mass of the birds decreased, mass remained constant during the recesses of prolonged incubation. The body stores of female eiders seemed to enable them to complete incubation with a limited safety margin. A further drop in body mass is avoided when a critical body mass is reached, because birds then start feeding enough to maintain mass while continuing incubation. Presumably, a similar mechanism will enable eiders to continue incubation when body reserves are prematurely depleted before hatching.  相似文献

Evaluating consequences of habitat selection is an important step in understanding life history strategies and behavioural decisions of animals. Kilpi and Lindström (1997) found that incubating common eiders Somateria mollissima on exposed, treeless islands lost weight faster than females nesting on wooded islands and proposed that this difference was due to adverse incubation conditions at exposed nests. Therefore, we tested whether common eiders gained an advantage when nesting in sheltered habitats by placing artificial shelters over randomly-selected females after the onset of incubation within an eider colony in arctic Canada. We predicted that sheltered females would be heavier on completion of incubation than control hens lacking shelters. Females nesting in artificial shelters experienced a more moderate thermal environment at both cold and warm temperature extremes. Eiders nesting in shelters were heavier than control females during mid incubation, consistent with habitat-specific rates of weight loss reported by Kilpi and Lindström (1997) . Natural overhead cover was available at potential nests but few eiders used those sites. We suspect that microclimatic advantages offered by sheltered sites may be offset by costs of increased female vulnerability to predators. Further work is needed to test this hypothesis, and to determine mechanisms responsible for lower weight loss in eiders attending well concealed nests.  相似文献

Kin-based social groups are commonly studied among cooperativelybreeding species but have been less studied in "nontraditional"group breeding systems. We investigated the presence of kin-basedsociality among females in the common eider (Somateria mollisima),a colonial nesting sea duck that exhibits high levels of natalphilopatry in females. Previous studies of female socialityin common eiders have been restricted to observations duringbrood rearing. However, aggregations of female common eidersare also observed during other periods of the life cycle suchas colony arrival and nesting. Here we apply a novel, empiricalframework using molecular markers and field sampling to geneticallycharacterize female social groups at several stages of the commoneider life cycle. When compared with mean estimates of interindividualrelatedness for the entire colony, significantly higher levelsof relatedness were found between females within groups arrivingto the colony in flight, between females and nearest neighborsat the time of nest site selection, and between groups of femalesdeparting the colony with ducklings. Both full-sibling and half-siblingequivalent relationships were also found within these groups. Therefore, throughout each of several stages including in-flightcolony arrival, nesting, and brood rearing, we provide the firstgenetically confirmed evidence of female kin-based social groupsin common eiders and anseriformes in general.  相似文献

Common eiders, Somateria mollissima, breed on two types of island in the Northern Baltic: open, sparsely vegetated islands and wooded islands with dense mixed forests. On open islands 79.8% of the nests were on open cliffs, exposed to wind and rain whereas on wooded islands 91.7% of the nests were sheltered inside dense spruce and pine thickets. We found that clutch size on open islands was significantly smaller than on wooded islands. Females started breeding simultaneously in the two habitats and they were similar in body size as measured by the length of the radio-ulna. During incubation females on open islands lost weight at a faster rate than females on wooded islands (34 g/day and 19 g/day, respectively). Heat loss is faster on open than wooded islands and therefore we suggest that the faster weight loss of females on open islands result from thermodynamically adverse incubation conditions. Because the eider is an extreme capital breeder, energy used for egg production cannot be used for incubation. To sustain a higher incubation cost on open islands, the optimal clutch size is therefore lower than on wooded islands. Received: 27 January 1997 / Accepted: 14 March 1997  相似文献

During 1997-1999, we collected serum samples from 156 common eider (Somateria mollissima) females incubating eggs in the Finnish archipelago of the Baltic Sea. We used serum chemistry profiles to evaluate metabolic changes in eiders during incubation and to compare the health and nutritional status of birds nesting at a breeding area where the eider population has declined by over 50% during the past decade, with birds nesting at two areas with stable populations. Several changes in serum chemistries were observed during incubation, including (1) decreases in serum glucose, total protein, albumin, beta-globulin, and gamma-globulin concentrations and (2) increases in serum uric acid, creatine kinase, and beta-hydroxybutyrate concentrations. However, these changes were not consistent throughout the 3-yr period, suggesting differences among years in the rate of carbohydrate, lipid, and protein utilization during incubation. The mean serum concentrations of free fatty acids, glycerol, and albumin were lowest and the serum alpha- and gamma-globulin levels were highest in the area where the eider population has declined, suggesting a role for nutrition and diseases in the population dynamics of Baltic eiders.  相似文献

Incubating common eiders (Somateria mollissima) insulate their nests with down to maintain desirable heat and humidity for their eggs. Eiderdown has been collected by Icelandic farmers for centuries, and down is replaced by hay during collection. This study determined whether down collecting affected the female eiders or their hatching success. We compared the following variables between down and hay nests: incubation temperature in the nest, incubation constancy, recess frequency, recess duration, egg rotation and hatching success of the clutch. Temperature data loggers recorded nest temperatures from 3 June to 9 July 2006 in nests insulated with down (n = 12) and hay (n = 12). The mean incubation temperatures, 31.5 and 30.7°C, in down and hay nests, or the maximum and minimum temperatures, did not differ between nest types where hatching succeeded. Cooling rates in down, on average 0.34°C/min and hay nests 0.44°C/min, were similar during incubation recesses. Females left their nests 0–4 times every 24 h regardless of nest type, for a mean duration of 45 and 47.5 min in down and hay nests, respectively. The mean frequency of egg rotation, 13.9 and 15.3 times every 24 h, was similar between down and hay nests, respectively. Hatching success adjusted for clutch size was similar, 0.60 and 0.67 in down and hay nests. These findings indicate that nest down is not a critical factor for the incubating eider. Because of high effect sizes for cooling rate and hatching success, we hesitate to conclude that absolutely no effects exist. However, we conclude that delaying down collection until just before eggs hatch will minimize any possible effect of down collection on females.  相似文献

Intraspecific sexual differences, high variation, and positive allometry of sexually-selected external display structures are common. Many sexually-selected anatomical specializations occur in the avian vocal tract but intraspecific variation and allometry have been investigated little. The tracheal bulla bulla syringealis occurs in males of most duck species. We quantified variation and size-scaling of the bulla, plus sexual differences in size of trachea, bronchi, and vocal muscles, for 62 common eiders Somateria mollissima and 51 king eiders S. spectabilis. Trends were similar in both species. Bullar ossification and definitive size occurred early in life: bullar size did not differ between first-year and older males. Bullar size did not vary more than size of other body parts (CVs of 3.4–7.0% for bullar length and breadth). Bullar size scaled to body size with negative allometry or isometry. Vocal muscles were 10–50% thicker in males than females, a much greater sexual difference than in body size (CVs of 3–6% on linear body-size variables). Vocal muscles were larger on the left side in both sexes and bilateral asymmetry was slightly more pronounced in males. Low variation and a trend towards negative allometry suggest that bullar size is under stabilizing selection; if bullar size affects vocal attributes of voice, then the latter cannot be condition-dependent. We recommend comparative research on vocal communication, vocal individuality and vocal-tract anatomy and function in eiders and other ducks.  相似文献

The response to drought was compared for willow plants of optimal leaf nitrogen content (100 N) and those of 86% of this content (86 N). Gas exchange measurements revealed that the carboxylation efficiency (CE) of photosynthesis was more sensitive to drought than the photosynthetic capacity in both N regimes. Since the leaf content of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) was found to be much more resistant it is suggested that a decreased specific activity of Rubisco underlies the decreased CE. Although the rate of water consumption was the same for 86 N and 100 N plants the photosynthetic apparatus responded much more rapidly in the 86 N leaves. This increased sensitivity of 86 N leaves was not due to accelerated senescence as judged by comparison with parallel plants subjected to discontinued fertilization; the two categories of treatments resulted in the same loss of leaf nitrogen and Rubisco but drought induced a much more rapid photosynthetic depression. In contrast to the drought situation, 86 N and 100 N plants behaved similarly when compared under short term water stress. First, when single attached leaves were exposed to a sudden drop in air humidity the capacity of CO2 uptake in both N regimes decreased about 20% over 10 min while the leaf water potential remained high. Second, in freely transpiring leaf discs cut from 86 N and 100 N leaves the same relationship between capacity of O2 evolution and extent of dehydration was observed. The possible mechanisms underlying the increased susceptibility of 86 N leaves to drought is discussed; the water status of the roots not the leaves is suggested to be the determining factor.Abbreviations CE carboxylation efficiency - 100 N optimal nitrogen regime - 86 N suboptimal nitrogen regime with 86% of the optimal leaf nitrogen content, Rubisco ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase  相似文献

In plants, it is hypothesized that allocation trade-offs may appear only when expenditures like seed production are high or external resources are scarce. In this study, we tested whether reproductive costs are more pronounced under enhanced interspecific competition. In a common garden, we investigated phenotypic correlations between sexual reproduction, clonal growth and storage structures in the grassland perennial, Succisa pratensis. During the past 50 years, habitats of this species have faced an expansion of clonal grasses that increase competition intensity. We simulated this process by growing five populations of Succisa from high- and low-production habitats with its clipped and non-clipped competitor, Agrostis capillaris. In addition, we experimentally removed flower heads of Succisa plants from one population grown with and without A. capillaris. We demonstrated costs of sexual reproduction by flower-head removal (resulting in increased plant size and relative allocation to belowground structures) but not by phenotypic correlations. We found no evidence that reproductive costs increase in a competitive environment and the opposite pattern was shown in both approaches used. However, high competition intensity reduced relative investment to flower-head production. In plants from low-production habitats, competition also reduced the absolute number of flower heads and belowground biomass as a result of smaller plant size. We assume that populations from low-production habitats are more prone to extinction as they have a reduced likelihood of local persistence and of escape to more suitable habitats during advancing succession.  相似文献

Variation of reproductive success, an important determinant of the opportunity for sexual selection, is an outcome of competition within one sex for mating with members of the other sex. In promiscuous species, males typically compete for access to females, and their reproductive strategies are strongly related to the spatial distribution of females. I used 10 microsatellite loci and the mtDNA control region to determine seasonal differences in the reproductive success of males and females of the common vole (Microtus arvalis), one of the most numerous mammals in Europe. The sex-related spatial structure and bias in dispersal between genders were also assessed. Standardized variance of the reproductive success of females did not vary seasonally due to the continuity of female philopatry throughout the breeding season and to the constancy of the number of females reproducing successfully in each season. The males are the dispersing sex, undergoing both natal and breeding dispersal. Their standardized variance of reproductive success was significantly higher than that for females in July, when only two males monopolized 80% of the females in the population and when variance of male reproductive success was highest (Im = 7.70). The seasonally varying and high standardized variance of male reproductive success may be explained by male-male competition for matings, coupled with seasonal changes in the age structure of the population.  相似文献

Lovastatin inhibited the growth of Candida albicans in a fungistatic way. Although it triggers apoptosis in a great variety of eukaryotic cells, including many tumour cell lines, lovastatin failed to provoke apoptotic events in this human pathogen. The fungistatic behaviour of this statin might arise from its negative influence on membrane fluidity. Because yeast-->pseudomycelium and hyphae morphogenetic transitions took place under exposure to lovastatin morphogenetic switch and apoptotic cell death must be regulated independently in C. albicans.  相似文献

The role of photoperiod in avian reproductive timing has been well studied, and we are increasingly recognizing the roles of other environmental cues such as social cues. However, few studies have evaluated the extent to which males and females of the same species respond similarly to the same type of cue. Moreover, previous studies have rarely examined how variation in the quality or nature of a given social cue might modulate its effect. Here, we examine the sensitivity of male and female pine siskins (Spinus pinus) to a potential mate as a stimulatory cue for gonadal recrudescence, and we investigate whether variation in the relationship between a bird and its potential mate modulates the effect of that potential mate. Birds were initially housed without opposite sex birds on a 12L:12D photoperiod with ad libitum food. After gonadal recrudescence had begun males and females were randomly paired with an opposite sex bird or housed alone. An additional group of males was paired with estradiol-implanted females. In males, these social treatments had no effect on testis length, cloacal protuberance length, luteinizing hormone (LH) levels, or testosterone levels. In females, presence of a potential mate had a significant and positive effect on ovary score, defeathering of the brood patch, and LH levels. Among paired birds, the degree of affiliation within a pair corresponded to the extent of reproductive development in females, but not males. Thus, reproductive timing in females appears to be sensitive to both the presence of a potential mate and her relationship with him.  相似文献

Age-related increases in the incidence of vaginal cornification were associated with increases in the reproductive success of female gray-tailed voles previously isolated from males. The pregnancy rate of females first paired with males at 30-50 days of age was significantly lower than that of females first paired at 90-120 or 150-200 days of age. The improvement was due to increases in propensities to display receptive behaviours and decreases in the incidence of sterile matings. Although plasma oestrogen concentrations increased with age and were higher in receptive than unreceptive females, plasma oestrogen values alone did not account completely for differences in receptive behaviours amongst females of different ages. Females ovariectomized at 30-50 days of age rarely displayed receptive behaviours when treated with large doses of oestradiol benzoate, whereas nearly all females similarly treated were receptive if ovariectomies were performed between 150 and 200 days of age. The receptivity rate of females ovariectomized between 90 and 150 days was intermediate between the rates of the other two groups.  相似文献

Mating is crucial for females that reproduce exclusively sexually and should influence their investment into reproduction. Although reproductive adjustments in response to mate quality have been tested in a wide range of species, the effect of exposure to males and mating per se has seldom been studied. Compensatory mechanisms against the absence of mating may evolve more frequently in viviparous females, which pay higher direct costs of reproduction, due to gestation, than oviparous females. To test the existence of such mechanisms in a viviparous species, we experimentally manipulated the mating opportunity of viviparous female lizard, Lacerta (Zootoca) vivipara. We assessed the effect of mating on ovulation, postpartum body condition and parturition date, as well as on changes in locomotor performances and body temperatures during the breeding cycle. Female lizards ovulated spontaneously and mating had no influence on litter size, locomotor impairment or on selected body temperature. However, offspring production induced a more pronounced locomotor impairment and physical burden than the production of undeveloped eggs. Postpartum body condition and parturition dates were not different among females. This result suggests that gestation length is not determined by an embryonic signal. In the common lizard, viviparity is not associated with facultative ovulation and a control of litter size after ovulation, in response to the absence of mating.  相似文献

Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are transporters of the inner mitochondrial membrane. Whereas UCP1 is uniquely present in brown adipose tissue where it uncouples respiration from ATP synthesis and activates respiration and heat production, UCP2 is present in numerous tissues, and its exact function remains to be clarified. Two sets of data provided the rationale for this study: (i) the intriguing report that UCP1 is present in uterus of mice (Nibbelink, M., Moulin, K., Arnaud, E., Duval, C., Penicaud, L., and Casteilla, L. (2001) J. Biol. Chem. 276, 47291-47295); and (ii) an observation that Ucp2(-/-) female mice (homozygous matings) have smaller litters compared with Ucp2(+/+) animals (S. Rousset and A.-M. Cassard-Doulcier, unpublished observations). These data prompted us to examine the expression of UCP1 and UCP2 in the reproductive tract of female mice. Using wild type, Ucp1(-/-) mice, and Ucp2(-/-) mice, we were unable to detect UCP1 in uterus of mice with appropriate antibodies, and we conclude that the signal assigned to UCP1 by others was neither UCP1 nor UCP2. Using a polyclonal antibody against UCP2 and tissues from Ucp2(-/-) mice as controls, UCP2 was detected in ovary, oviduct, and uterus. Expression of Ucp2 mRNA was also observed in ovary and uterus using in situ hybridization analysis. Bone marrow transplantation experiments revealed that the UCP2 signal of the ovary was restricted to ovarian cells. UCP2 level in ovary decreased during follicular growth and increased during the pre-ovulatory period, during which aspects of an inflammatory process are known to exist. Because UCP2 down-regulates reactive oxygen species, a role in the regulation of inflammatory events linked to the preparation of ovulation is suggested.  相似文献

Post‐copulatory sexual selection processes, including sperm competition and cryptic female choice (CFC), can operate based on major histocompatibility (MH) genes. We investigated sperm competition between male alternative reproductive tactics [jack (sneaker) and hooknose (guard)] of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). Using a full factorial design, we examined in vitro competitive fertilization success of paired jack and hooknose males at three time points after sperm activation (0, 15 and 60 s) to test for male competition, CFC and time effects on male fertilization success. We also examined egg‐mediated CFC at two MH genes by examining both the relationship between competitive fertilization success and MH divergence as well as inheritance patterns of MH alleles in resulting offspring. We found that jacks sired more offspring than hooknose males at 0 s post‐activation; however, jack fertilization success declined over time post‐activation, suggesting a trade‐off between sperm speed and longevity. Enhanced fertilization success of jacks (presumably via higher sperm quality) may serve to increase sneaker tactic competitiveness relative to dominant hooknose males. We also found evidence of egg‐mediated CFC (i.e. female × male interaction) influencing competitive fertilization success; however, CFC was not acting on the MH genes as we found no relationship between fertilization success and MH II β1 or MH I α1 divergence and we found no deviations from Mendelian inheritance of MH alleles in the offspring. Our study provides insight into evolutionary mechanisms influencing variation in male mating success within alternative reproductive tactics, thus underscoring different strategies that males can adopt to attain success.  相似文献
