Three different suspended-growth anaerobic digestion configurations—the mesophilic one-stage, the mesophilic two-phase and the thermophilic one-stage, were used to treat palm oil mill effluent (POME) and their performances compared. The mesophilic two-phase process showed the highest energy yields which reached 20 542 J g−1 COD utilized at a hydraulic retention time of 31 days. However, high energy yields did not coincide with high TCOD removals. The latter was a characteristic of the thermophilic process. The relatively poor TCOD removal in the two-phase system was due to its lower efficiency in VSS removal. At hydraulic retention times of 25 days and more the mesophilic one-stage process had higher energy yields than the thermophilic process. Anaerobic digestion was found to be an effective means for POME treatment.  相似文献

Summary A semi-continuous anaerobic digester was used to degrade palm oil mill effluent (POME) under thermophilic conditions. A volumetric loading of 15.1 kg COD/m3·day equivalent to a hydraulic retention time of 4.3 days was maintained for two months. This rate is significantly faster than the rates achieved in previously reported studies. Soluble COD removals were greater than 96%.  相似文献

This is a scale-down study of a 500-m3 methane recovery test plant for anaerobic treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME) where biomass washout has become one of the problems because of the continuous mixing of effluent during anaerobic treatment of POME. Therefore, in this study, anaerobic POME treatment using a scaled down 50-l bioreactor which mimicked the 500-m3 bioreactor was carried out to improve biogas production with and without biomass sedimentation. Three sets of experiments were conducted under different conditions in terms of biomass sedimentation applied to the system. The first experiment was operated under semi-continuous mode whereas the second and third experiments were operated based on mix and settle mode. As expected, biomass retention improved the anaerobic process as the POME treatment incorporated with mix and settle system were able to operate at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 3.5 and 6.0 kg COD/m3/day respectively, while the semi-continuous operated anaerobic treatment only achieved OLR of 3.0 kg COD/m3/day. The highest biogas and methane production rates achieved were 2.42 m3/m3 of reactor/day and 0.992 m3/m3 of reactor/day, respectively at OLR 6.0 kg COD/m3/day. The biomass or solids retention in the reactors was represented by the total solids measured in this study.  相似文献

Biological kinetic (bio-kinetic) study of the anaerobic stabilization pond treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME) was carried out in a laboratory anaerobic bench scale reactor (ABSR). The reactor was operated at different feed flow-rates of 0.63, 0.76, 0.95, 1.27, 1.9 and 3.8 l of raw POME for a day. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) as influent substrates was selected for bio-kinetic study. The investigation showed that the growth yield (YG), specific biomass decay (b), maximum specific biomass growth rate (μmax), saturation constant (Ks) and critical retention time (Θc) were in the range of 0.990 g VSS/g CODremoved day, 0.024 day−1, 0.524 day−1, 203.433 g COD l−1 and 1.908 day, respectively.  相似文献

Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is a highly polluting wastewater that pollutes the environment if discharged directly due to its high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) concentration. Anaerobic digestion has been widely used for POME treatment with large emphasis placed on capturing the methane gas released as a product of this biodegradation treatment method. The anaerobic digestion method is recognized as a clean development mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto protocol. Certified emission reduction (CER) can be obtained by using methane gas as a renewable energy. This review aims to discuss the various anaerobic treatments of POME and factors that influence the operation of anaerobic treatment. The POME treatment at both mesophilic and thermophilic temperature ranges are also analyzed.  相似文献

A recently developed rapid co-composting of oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) and palm oil mill effluent (POME) anaerobic sludge is beginning to attract attention from the palm oil industry in managing the disposal of these wastes. However, a deeper understanding of microbial diversity is required for the sustainable practice of the co-compositing process. In this study, an in-depth assessment of bacterial community succession at different stages of the pilot scale co-composting of OPEFB-POME anaerobic sludge was performed using 454-pyrosequencing, which was then correlated with the changes of physicochemical properties including temperature, oxygen level and moisture content. Approximately 58,122 of 16S rRNA gene amplicons with more than 500 operational taxonomy units (OTUs) were obtained. Alpha diversity and principal component analysis (PCoA) indicated that bacterial diversity and distributions were most influenced by the physicochemical properties of the co-composting stages, which showed remarkable shifts of dominant species throughout the process. Species related to Devosia yakushimensis and Desemzia incerta are shown to emerge as dominant bacteria in the thermophilic stage, while Planococcus rifietoensis correlated best with the later stage of co-composting. This study proved the bacterial community shifts in the co-composting stages corresponded with the changes of the physicochemical properties, and may, therefore, be useful in monitoring the progress of co-composting and compost maturity.  相似文献

Cellulolytic fungi, 34 strains, were isolated from samples taken from palm oil mill residues and effluent, and high cellulase producers selected in comparison with nine known reference strains. Although 13 isolates showed good filter paper distintegration within 14 days, only eight isolates exhibited clearing zones around their colonies on carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) agar medium. Quantitative cellulase activity measurements, using CMC as carbon source, selected three of the eight isolates as potential cellulase producers. Using dried palm oil mill condensate as carbon source, only one of the isolates (F 11) showed similar results on both carbon sources. During media optimization for CMCase production, a four-fold increase from 0.058 to 0.275 U/ml was obtained using a medium, containing 0.1% (v/v) Tween 80 0.02% (w/v) NH4NO3, 0.025% (w/v) proteose-peptone and 0.1% (w/v) CMC dissolved in undiluted condensate from the sterilization of oil palm bunches, with an initial pH of 5.5.  相似文献

The demand for cellulases has increased tremendously over the last few decades. This is due to its numerous applications in industry and also because it can be used to hydrolyze cellulosic materials into sugars that can be fermented into bioethanol and bio‐based products. This does not only open up a big and significant market for cellulases, but also provides another source of biofuel and bioenergy in the future. Nevertheless, the cost of the existing substrates for cellulase fermentation is very high if required for large‐scale production. Sustainable supplies and an economically feasible biomass are needed to reduce the cost of cellulase production. Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is rich in carbohydrates, proteins, nitrogenous compounds, lipids, minerals, cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin. It can be used naturally as a fermentation medium, either for cellulase or other value‐added product fermentation. In Malaysia, a large and continually increasing amount of POME is produced every year because of the high global demand for palm oil. Hence, the development of cellulase production from POME is reviewed, covering the POME production, cellulase production and the major challenges together with the future prospects of these processes.  相似文献

Aim: To evaluate the bioenergy generation and the microbial community structure from palm oil mill effluent using microbial fuel cell. Methods and Results: Microbial fuel cells enriched with palm oil mill effluent (POME) were employed to harvest bioenergy from both artificial wastewater containing acetate and complex POME. The microbial fuel cell (MFC) showed maximum power density of 3004 mW m?2 after continuous feeding with artificial wastewater containing acetate substrate. Subsequent replacement of the acetate substrate with complex substrate of POME recorded maximum power density of 622 mW m?2. Based on 16S rDNA analyses, relatively higher abundance of Deltaproteobacteria (88·5%) was detected in the MFCs fed with acetate artificial wastewater as compared to POME. Meanwhile, members of Gammaproteobacteria, Epsilonproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria codominated the microbial consortium of the MFC fed with POME with 21, 20 and 18·5% abundances, respectively. Conclusions: Enriched electrochemically active bacteria originated from POME demonstrated potential to generate bioenergy from both acetate and complex POME substrates. Further improvements including the development of MFC systems that are able to utilize both fermentative and nonfermentative substrates in POME are needed to maximize the bioenergy generation. Significance and Impact of the Study: A better understanding of microbial structure is critical for bioenergy generation from POME using MFC. Data obtained in this study improve our understanding of microbial community structure in conversion of POME to electricity.  相似文献

A novel polyethylene glycol (PEG) gel was fabricated and used as a carrier to immobilize Clostridium butyricum EB6 to improve biohydrogen (bio-H2) production from palm oil mill effluent (POME). POME is used as a substrate that can act as a carbon source. The resulting PEG-immobilized cells were found to yield 5.35 LH2/L-POME, and the maximum H2 production rate was 510 mL H2/L-POME h (22.7 mmol/L h). The Monod-type kinetic model was used to describe the effect of substrate (POME) concentration on the H2 production rate. The acclimation of immobilized cells greatly improved H2 production. Batch experiments demonstrated that particle size of PEG-immobilized cells for efficient H2 production 3 mm. It is significant that this is the first report on whole-cell immobilization in PEG for H2 production from POME.  相似文献

A laboratory scale study to evaluate the potentiality of filamentous fungi for the production of cellulolytic enzymes using palm oil mill effluent (POME) as a basal medium was initiated. A total of 25 filamentous fungi in which 16 filamentous fungi were isolated and purified from oil palm industrial residues and 9 strains from laboratory stock were screened using POME with 1% total suspended solids. Trichoderma reesei RUT C-30 was identified as a potential strain for cellulolytic enzyme production as compared to other genera of Aspergillus, Penicillum, Rhizopus, Phanerochaete, Trichoderma and basidiomycete groups. The results showed that T. reesei RUT C-30 gave the highest filter paper cellulase and carboxy methyl cellulase activity of 0.917 and 2.51 U/ml respectively at day 5 of fermentation. Other parameters such as growth formation, pH, filterability and total biosolids were observed to evaluate the bioconversion process.  相似文献

A novel polyethylene glycol (PEG) gel was fabricated and used as a carrier to immobilize Clostridium sp. LS2 for continuous hydrogen production in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. Palm oil mill effluent (POME) was used as the substrate carbon source. The optimal amount of PEG-immobilized cells for anaerobic hydrogen production was 12% (w/v) in the UASB reactor. The UASB reactor containing immobilized cells was operated at varying hydraulic retention times (HRT) that ranged from 24 to 6 h at 3.3 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L/h organic loading rate (OLR), or at OLRs that ranged from 1.6 to 6.6 at 12 h HRT. The best volumetric hydrogen production rate of 336 mL H2/L/h (or 15.0 mmol/L/h) with a hydrogen yield of 0.35 L H2/g CODremoved was obtained at a HRT of 12 h and an OLR of 5.0 g COD/L/h. The average hydrogen content of biogas and COD reduction were 52% and 62%, respectively. The major soluble metabolites during hydrogen fermentation were butyric acid followed by acetic acid. It is concluded that the PEG-immobilized cell system developed in this work has great potential for continuous hydrogen production from real wastewater (POME) using the UASB reactor.  相似文献

Aerobic consortia that grow on olive oil mill effluent (OOME) were obtained by enrichment. Several cultures were capable of metabolizing monoaromatic compounds, supplied as the sole carbon source at 2 g L–1. Some consortia degraded mixtures of seven aromatics (4 g L–1) after 1 week of incubation at 32°C. The consortia were also active against monoaromatics of the undiluted OOME. This reduced the inhibitory effect of phenolic compounds prior to the anaerobic digestion of OOME at batch scale. No inhibition of the anaerobic microbial populations was noticed with treated OOME. From the most active consortium, nine different bacterial strains were isolated and shown to grow on simple aromatic compounds. Removal of 50% of the initial chemical oxygen demand and degradation of almost all of the simple aromatics in undiluted OOME was obtained with reconstituted bacterial mixtures. A slight reduction in colouration was due to adsorption of coloured compounds to bacterial cells. Presumably, the consortia could not reduce and degrade the coloured compounds in OOME.  相似文献

Among different sources of lipases, fungal lipases have continued to attract a wide range of applications. Further, halophilic lipases are highly desirable for biodiesel production due to the need to mitigate environmental pollution caused as result of extensive use of fossil fuels. However, currently, the high production cost limits the industrial application of lipases. In order to address this issue, we have attempted to optimize lipase production by Fusarium solani NFCCL 4084 and using palm oil mill effluent (POME) based medium. The production was optimized using a combinatory approach of Plackett-Burman (PB) design, one factor at a time (OFAT) design and face centred central composite design (FCCCD). The variables (malt extract, (NH4)2SO4, CaCl2, MgSO4, olive oil, peptone, K2HPO4, NaNO3, Tween-80, POME and pH) were analyzed using PB design and the variables with positive contrast coefficient were found to be K2HPO4, NaNO3, Tween-80, POME and pH. The significant variables selected were further analyzed for possible optimum range by using OFAT approach and the findings revealed that K2HPO4, NaNO3, and Tween-80 as the most significant medium components, and thus were further optimized by using FCCCD. The optimum medium yielded a lipase with an activity of 7.8 U/ml, a significant 3.2-fold increase compared to un-optimized medium. The present findings revealed that POME is an alternative and suitable substrate for halophilic lipase production at low cost. Also, it is clearly evident that the combinatory approach employed here proved to be very effective in producing high activity halophilic lipases, in general.  相似文献

Palm oil industry is one of the leading agricultural industries in Malaysia with average crude palm oil production of more than 13 million tonne per year. However, production of such huge amount of crude palm oil has consequently resulted to even larger amount of palm oil mill effluent (POME). POME is a highly polluting wastewater with high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in which can caused severe pollution to the environment, typically pollution to water resources. On the other hand, POME was identified as a potential source to generate renewable bioenergies such as biomethane and biohydrogen through anaerobic digestion. In other words, a combination of wastewater treatment and renewable bioenergies production would be an added advantage to the palm oil industry. In line with the world's focus on sustainability concept, such strategy should be implemented immediately to ensure palm oil is produced in an environmental friendly and sustainable manner. This review aims to discuss various technologies to convert POME to biomethane and biohydrogen in a commercial scale. Furthermore, discussion on using POME to culture microalgae for biodiesel and bioethanol production was included in the present paper as a new remedy to utilize POME with a greater beneficial return.  相似文献

Anaerobic treatment processes to remove organic matter from palm oil mill effluent (POME) have been used widely in Malaysia. Still the amounts of total organic and total mineral released from POME that may cause degradation of the receiving environment need to be verified. This paper proposes the use of the hydrodynamic equations to estimate performance of the cascaded anaerobic ponds (CAP) and to calculate amounts of total organic matter and total mineral released from POME. The CAP efficiencies to remove biochemical oxygen demands, chemical oxygen demands, total solids and volatile solids (VS) as high as 94.5, 93.6, 96.3 and 98.2 %, respectively, are estimated. The amounts of total organic matter and total mineral as high as 538 kg VS/day and 895 kg FS/day, respectively, released from POME to the receiving water are calculated. The implication of the proposed hydrodynamic equations contributes to more versatile environmental assessment techniques, sometimes replacing laboratory analysis.  相似文献

Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a process that hydrolysis urea by microbial urease to fill the pore spaces of soil with induced calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitates, which eventually results in improved or solidified soil. This research explored the possibility of using dairy manure pellets (DMP) and palm oil mill effluent (POME) as alternative nutrient sources for Sporosarcina pasteurii cultivation and CaCO3 bioprecipitation. Different concentrations (20–80 g l−1) of DMP and POME were used to propagate the cells of S. pasteurii under laboratory conditions. The measured CaCO3 contents for MICP soil specimens that were treated with bacterial cultures grown in DMP medium (60%, w/v) was 15·30 ± 0·04 g ml−1 and POME medium (40%, v/v) was 15·49 ± 0·05 g ml−1 after 21 days curing. The scanning electron microscopy showed that soil treated with DMP had rhombohedral structure-like crystals with smooth surfaces, whilst that of POME entailed ring-like cubical formation with rough surfaces Electron dispersive X-ray analysis was able to identify a high mass percentage of chemical element compositions (Ca, C and O), whilst spectrum from Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the vibration peak intensities for CaCO3. Atomic force microscopy further showed clear topographical differences on the crystal surface structures that were formed around the MICP treated soil samples. These nutrient sources (DMP and POME) showed encouraging potential cultivation mediums to address high costs related to bacterial cultivation and biocementation treatment.  相似文献
