This study compared the gastric emptying and oxidation of two 15% carbohydrate (CHO) solutions: a 22-chain-length glucose polymer (GP) and soluble starch (SS). Six endurance-trained subjects ingested 1,200 ml of either GP or SS while cycling for 90 min at 70% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). Whereas the calculated total CHO oxidation (GP 266.8 +/- 41.9 g; SS 263.6 +/- 28.9 g) and the volume emptied from the stomach (GP 813 +/- 130 ml; SS 919 +/- 116 ml) were similar, the appearance of the 14C label in plasma occurred more rapidly from ingested SS than from GP (P less than 0.001). This resulted in a significantly greater rate of SS oxidation than that from GP (SS 105.9 +/- 21.9 g, GP 49.6 +/- 10.2 g; P less than 0.001). Exogenous CHO oxidation from GP accounted for 19% of total CHO oxidation, whereas the corresponding value for SS was 40%. This study suggests that the oxidation of SS and GP solutions ingested during exercise at 70% VO2max is not limited by gastric emptying. Rather, it appears to be either the rate of digestion or absorption of these solutions that determines their utilization.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether combined ingestion of two carbohydrates (CHO) that are absorbed by different intestinal transport mechanisms would lead to exogenous CHO oxidation rates of >1.0 g/min. Nine trained male cyclists (maximal O(2) consumption: 64 +/- 2 ml x kg body wt(-1) x min(-1)) performed four exercise trials, which were randomly assigned and separated by at least 1 wk. Each trial consisted of 150 min of cycling at 50% of maximal power output (60 +/- 1% maximal O(2) consumption), while subjects received a solution providing either 1.8 g/min of glucose (Glu), 1.2 g/min of glucose + 0.6 g/min of sucrose (Glu+Suc), 1.2 g/min of glucose + 0.6 g/min of maltose (Glu+Mal), or water. Peak exogenous CHO oxidation rates were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the Glu+Suc trial (1.25 +/- 0.07 g/min) compared with the Glu and Glu+Mal trials (1.06 +/- 0.08 and 1.06 +/- 0.06 g/min, respectively). No difference was found in (peak) exogenous CHO oxidation rates between Glu and Glu+Mal. These results demonstrate that, when a mixture of glucose and sucrose is ingested at high rates (1.8 g/min) during cycling exercise, exogenous CHO oxidation rates reach peak values of approximately 1.25 g/min.  相似文献

To determine whether the relative utilization of exogenous carbohydrate (CHO(exo)) differs between children and adults, substrate utilization during 60 min of cycling at 70% peak O(2) uptake was studied in 12 pre- and early pubertal boys (9.8 +/- 0.1 yr) and 10 men (22.1 +/- 0.5 yr) on two occasions. Subjects consumed either a placebo or a (13)C-enriched 6% CHO(exo) beverage (total volume per trial: 24 ml/kg). Substrate utilization was calculated for the final 30 min of exercise. During both trials, total fat oxidation was higher (5.4 +/- 0.5 vs. 3.0 +/- 0.4 mg x kg(-1) x min(-1), P < 0.001) and total CHO oxidation lower (27.4 +/- 1.5 vs. 34.8 +/- 1.2 mg x kg(-1) x min(-1), P < 0.001) in boys than in men, respectively. During the CHO(exo) trial, CHO(exo) oxidation was higher (P < 0.001) in boys (8.8 +/- 0.5 mg x kg(-1) x min(-1)) than in men (6.2 +/- 0.5 mg x kg(-1) x min(-1)) and provided a greater (P < 0.001) relative proportion of total energy in boys (21.8 +/- 1.4%) than in men (14.6 +/- 0.9%). These results suggest that, although endogenous CHO utilization during exercise is lower, the relative oxidation of ingested CHO is considerably higher in boys than in men. The greater reliance on CHO(exo) in boys may be important in preserving endogenous fuels and may be related to pubertal status.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether aspirin (A) ingestion combined with prolonged exercise increases gastrointestinal permeability and whether consumption of a carbohydrate-containing (CHO) or a CHO + glutamine-containing (CHO+G) beverage would reduce this effect. Seventeen subjects completed six experiments. They ingested A (1,300 mg) or placebo (P) pills the evening before and before running 60 min at 70% maximal oxygen uptake. Also, before running they ingested a solution containing 5 g lactulose (L), 5 g sucrose (S), and 2 g rhamnose (R). During each trial, either a 6% CHO beverage, a 6% CHO+G (0.6%; 41 mM) beverage, or a water placebo (WP) was consumed. For 4 h after a run, all urine was collected to measure urinary excretion of L, R, and S. S excretion (percentage of dose ingested; measure of gastroduodenal permeability) was significantly greater (P < 0.05) during the A trial while the subjects drank the WP compared with all other trials. Administration of A also significantly increased L/R (measure of intestinal permeability) for the CHO and WP trials compared with all P trials. Ingestion the CHO or CHO+G beverages significantly reduced S excretion and L excretion when A was administered, but it did not reduce L/R. These results indicate that gastroduodenal and intestinal permeability increase after A ingestion during prolonged running and that ingestion of a CHO beverage attenuates the gastroduodenal effect but not the intestinal effect. Furthermore, addition of G to the CHO beverage provided no additional benefit in reducing gastroduodenal or intestinal permeability.  相似文献

We measured substrate utilization during exercise performed with water (W), exogenous glucose (G), and exogenous fructose plus glucose (FG) ingestion in boys age 10-14 yr. Subjects (n = 12) cycled for 90 min at 55% maximal O(2) uptake while ingesting either W (25 ml/kg), 6% G (1.5 g/kg), or 3% F plus 3% G (1.5 g/kg). Fat oxidation increased during exercise in all trials but was higher in the W (0.28 +/- 0.023 g/min) than in the G (0.24 +/- 0.023 g/min) and FG (0.25 +/- 0.029 g/min) trials (P = 0.04). Conversely, total carbohydrate (CHO) oxidation decreased in all trials and was lower in the W (0.63 +/- 0.05 g/min) than in the G (0.78 +/- 0.051 g/min) and FG (0.74 +/- 0.056 g/min) trials (P = 0.009). Exogenous CHO oxidation, as determined by expired (13)CO(2), reached a maximum of 0.36 +/- 0.032 and 0.31 +/- 0.030 g/min at 90 min in G and FG, respectively (P = 0.04). Plasma insulin levels decrease during exercise in all trials but were twofold higher in G than in W and FG (P < 0.001). Plasma glucose levels decreased transiently after the onset of exercise in all trials and then returned to preexercise values in the W and FG (approximately 4.5 mmol/l) trials but were elevated by approximately 1.0 mmol/l in the G trial (P < 0.001). Plasma lactate concentrations decreased after the onset of exercise in all trials but were lower by approximately 0.5 mmol/l in W than in G and FG (P = 0.02). Thus, in boys exercising at a moderate intensity, the oxidation rate of G plus F is slightly less than G alone, but both spare endogenous CHO and fat to a similar extent. In addition, compared with flavored W, the ingestion of G alone and of G plus F delays exhaustion at 90% peak power by approximately 25 and 40%, respectively, after 90 min of moderate-intensity exercise.  相似文献

The effects of carbohydrate or water ingestion on metabolism were investigated in seven male subjects during two running and two cycling trials lasting 60 min at individual lactate threshold using indirect calorimetry, U-14C-labeled tracer-derived measures of the rates of oxidation of plasma glucose, and direct determination of mixed muscle glycogen content from the vastus lateralis before and after exercise. Subjects ingested 8 ml/kg body mass of either a 6.4% carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (CHO) or water 10 min before exercise and an additional 2 ml/kg body mass of the same fluid after 20 and 40 min of exercise. Plasma glucose oxidation was greater with CHO than with water during both running (65 +/- 20 vs. 42 +/- 16 g/h; P < 0.01) and cycling (57 +/- 16 vs. 35 +/- 12 g/h; P < 0.01). Accordingly, the contribution from plasma glucose oxidation to total carbohydrate oxidation was greater during both running (33 +/- 4 vs. 23 +/- 3%; P < 0.01) and cycling (36 +/- 5 vs. 22 +/- 3%; P < 0.01) with CHO ingestion. However, muscle glycogen utilization was not reduced by the ingestion of CHO compared with water during either running (112 +/- 32 vs. 141 +/- 34 mmol/kg dry mass) or cycling (227 +/- 36 vs. 216 +/- 39 mmol/kg dry mass). We conclude that, compared with water, 1) the ingestion of carbohydrate during running and cycling enhanced the contribution of plasma glucose oxidation to total carbohydrate oxidation but 2) did not attenuate mixed muscle glycogen utilization during 1 h of continuous submaximal exercise at individual lactate threshold.  相似文献

Both carbohydrate (CHO) and caffeine have been used as ergogenic aids during exercise. It has been suggested that caffeine increases intestinal glucose absorption, but there are also suggestions that it may decrease muscle glucose uptake. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of caffeine on exogenous CHO oxidation. In a randomized crossover design, eight male cyclists (age 27 +/- 2 yr, body mass 71.2 +/- 2.3 kg, maximal oxygen uptake 65.7 +/- 2.2 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) exercised at 64 +/- 3% of maximal oxygen uptake for 120 min on three occasions. During exercise subjects ingested either a 5.8% glucose solution (Glu; 48 g/h), glucose with caffeine (Glu+Caf, 48 g/h + 5 mg x kg(-1) x h(-1)), or plain water (Wat). The glucose solution contained trace amounts of [U-13C]glucose so that exogenous CHO oxidation could be calculated. CHO and fat oxidation were measured by indirect calorimetry, and 13C appearance in the expired gases was measured by continuous-flow IRMS. Average exogenous CHO oxidation over the 90- to 120-min period was 26% higher (P < 0.05) in Glu+Caf (0.72 +/- 0.04 g/min) compared with Glu (0.57 +/- 0.04 g/min). Total CHO oxidation rates were higher (P < 0.05) in the CHO ingestion trials compared with Wat, but they were highest when Glu+Caf was ingested (1.21 +/- 0.37, 1.84 +/- 0.14, and 2.47 +/- 0.23 g/min for Wat, Glu, and Glu+Caf, respectively; P < 0.05). There was also a trend (P = 0.082) toward an increased endogenous CHO oxidation with Glu+Caf (1.81 +/- 0.22 g/min vs. 1.27 +/- 0.13 g/min for Glu and 1.12 +/- 0.37 g/min for Wat). In conclusion, compared with glucose alone, 5 mg x kg(-1) x h(-1) of caffeine coingested with glucose increases exogenous CHO oxidation, possibly as a result of an enhanced intestinal absorption.  相似文献

The first purpose of this study was to investigate whether a glucose (GLU)+fructose (FRUC) beverage would result in a higher exogenous carbohydrate (CHO) oxidation rate and a higher fluid availability during exercise in the heat compared with an isoenergetic GLU beverage. A second aim of the study was to examine whether ingestion of GLU at a rate of 1.5 g/min during exercise in the heat would lead to a reduced muscle glycogen oxidation rate compared with ingestion of water (WAT). Eight trained male cyclists (maximal oxygen uptake: 64+/-1 ml.kg-1.min-1) cycled on three different occasions for 120 min at 50% maximum power output at an ambient temperature of 31.9+/-0.1 degrees C. Subjects received, in random order, a solution providing either 1.5 g/min of GLU, 1.0 g/min of GLU+0.5 g/min of FRUC, or WAT. Exogenous CHO oxidation during the last hour of exercise was approximately 36% higher (P<0.05) in GLU+FRUC compared with GLU, and peak oxidation rates were 1.14+/-0.05 and 0.77+/-0.08 g/min, respectively. Endogenous CHO oxidation was significantly lower (P<0.05) in GLU+FRUC compared with WAT. Muscle glycogen oxidation was not different after ingestion of GLU or WAT. Plasma deuterium enrichments were significantly higher (P<0.05) in WAT and GLU+FRUC compared with GLU. Furthermore, at 60 and 75 min of exercise, plasma deuterium enrichments were higher (P<0.05) in WAT compared with GLU+FRUC. Ingestion of GLU+FRUC during exercise in the heat resulted in higher exogenous CHO oxidation rates and fluid availability compared with ingestion of GLU and reduced endogenous CHO oxidation compared with ingestion of WAT.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether plasma glucose kinetics and substrate oxidation during exercise are dependent on the phase of the menstrual cycle. Once during the follicular (F) and luteal (L) phases, moderately trained subjects [peak O(2) uptake (V(O(2))) = 48.2 +/- 1.1 ml. min(-1). kg(-1); n = 6] cycled for 25 min at approximately 70% of the V(O(2)) at their respective lactate threshold (70%LT), followed immediately by 25 min at 90%LT. Rates of plasma glucose appearance (R(a)) and disappearance (R(d)) were determined with a primed constant infusion of [6,6-(2)H]glucose, and total carbohydrate (CHO) and fat oxidation were determined with indirect calorimetry. At rest and during exercise at 70%LT, there were no differences in glucose R(a) or R(d) between phases. CHO and fat oxidation were not different between phases at 70%LT. At 90%LT, glucose R(a) (28.8 +/- 4.8 vs. 33.7 +/- 4.5 micromol. min(-1). kg(-1); P < 0.05) and R(d) (28.4 +/- 4.8 vs. 34.0 +/- 4.1 micromol. min(-1). kg(-1); P < 0.05) were lower during the L phase. In addition, at 90%LT, CHO oxidation was lower during the L compared with the F phase (82.0 +/- 12.3 vs. 93.8 +/- 9.7 micromol. min(-1) .kg(-1); P < 0.05). Conversely, total fat oxidation was greater during the L phase at 90%LT (7.46 +/- 1.01 vs. 6.05 +/- 0.89 micromol. min(-1). kg(-1); P < 0.05). Plasma lactate concentration was also lower during the L phase at 90%LT concentrations (2.48 +/- 0.41 vs. 3.08 +/- 0.39 mmol/l; P < 0.05). The lower CHO utilization during the L phase was associated with an elevated resting estradiol (P < 0.05). These results indicate that plasma glucose kinetics and CHO oxidation during moderate-intensity exercise are lower during the L compared with the F phase in women. These differences may have been due to differences in circulating estradiol.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to compare different tracer methods to assess whole body protein turnover during 6 h of prolonged endurance exercise when carbohydrate was ingested throughout the exercise period and to investigate whether addition of protein can improve protein balance. Eight endurance-trained athletes were studied on two different occasions at rest (4 h), during 6 h of exercise at 50% of maximal O2 uptake (in sequential order: 2.5 h of cycling, 1 h of running, and 2.5 h of cycling), and during subsequent recovery (4 h). Subjects ingested carbohydrate (CHO trial; 0.7 g CHO.kg(-1.)h(-1)) or carbohydrate/protein beverages (CHO + PRO trial; 0.7 g CHO.kg(-1).h(-1) and 0.25 g PRO.kg(-1).h(-1)) at 30-min intervals during the entire study. Whole body protein metabolism was determined by infusion of L-[1-13C]leucine, L-[2H5]phenylalanine, and [15N2]urea tracers with sampling of blood and expired breath. Leucine oxidation increased from rest to exercise [27 +/- 2.5 vs. 74 +/- 8.8 (CHO) and 85 +/- 9.5 vs. 200 +/- 16.3 mg protein.kg(-1).h(-1) (CHO + PRO), P < 0.05], whereas phenylalanine oxidation and urea production did not increase with exercise. Whole body protein balance during exercise with carbohydrate ingestion was negative (-74 +/- 8.8, -17 +/- 1.1, and -72 +/- 5.7 mg protein.kg(-1).h(-1)) when L-[1-13C]leucine, L-[2H5]phenylalanine, and [15N2]urea, respectively, were used as tracers. Addition of protein to the carbohydrate drinks resulted in a positive or less-negative protein balance (-32 +/- 16.3, 165 +/- 4.6, and 151 +/- 13.4 mg protein.kg(-1).h(-1)) when L-[1-13C]leucine, L-[2H5]phenylalanine, and [15N2]urea, respectively, were used as tracers. We conclude that, even during 6 h of exhaustive exercise in trained athletes using carbohydrate supplements, net protein oxidation does not increase compared with the resting state and/or postexercise recovery. Combined ingestion of protein and carbohydrate improves net protein balance at rest as well as during exercise and postexercise recovery.  相似文献

It was reported previously that glucose ingestion prior to or at the beginning of muscular exercise was a readily available metabolic substrate. The aim of this study was to see what percentage of carbohydrate utilization can be covered by glucose ingested regularly during exercise. Male healthy volunteers exercised for 285 min at approximately 45% of their individual maximal O2 uptake on a 10% uphill treadmill. After 15 min adaptation to exercise they received either 200 g (group G 200) or 400 g (group G 400) glucose (0.25 g X ml H2O-1) orally in eight equal doses repeated every 30 min (G 200 = 8 X 25 g, n = 4; G 400 = 8 X 50 g, n = 4). Indirect calorimetry was used to evaluate carbohydrate and lipid oxidation. Naturally labeled [13C]glucose was used to follow the oxidation of the exogenous glucose. Total carbohydrate oxidation was 341 +/- 22 and 332 +/- 32 g, lipid oxidation was 119 +/- 8 and 105 +/- 5 g, and exogenous glucose oxidation was 137 +/- 4 and 227 +/- 13 g (P less than 0.005) in groups G 200 and G 400, respectively. Endogenous glucose oxidation was about half in G 400 of what it was in G 200: 106 +/- 27 vs. 204 +/- 24 g (P less than 0.02). The purpose of this study was to compare the oxidation of 13C-labeled glucose, fructose, and glucose polymer ingested (1.33 g.kg-1 in 19 ml.kg-1 water) during cycle exercise (120 min, 53 +/- 2% maximal O2 uptake) in six healthy male subjects. Oxidation of exogenous glucose and glucose polymer (72 +/- 15 and 65 +/- 18%, respectively, of the 98.9 +/- 4.7 g ingested) was similar and significantly greater than exogenous fructose oxidation (54 +/- 13%). A transient rise in plasma glucose concentration was observed with glucose ingestion only. However, plasma insulin levels were similar with glucose and glucose polymer ingestions and significantly higher than with water or fructose ingestion. Plasma free fatty acid and glycerol responses to exercise were blunted with carbohydrate ingestion. However, fat utilization was not significantly different with water (82 +/- 14 g), glucose (60 +/- 3 g), fructose (59 +/- 11 g), or glucose polymer ingestion (60 +/- 8 g). Endogenous carbohydrate utilization was significantly lower with glucose (184 +/- 22 g), glucose polymer (187 +/- 31 g), and fructose (211 +/- 18 g) than with water (239 +/- 30 g) ingestion. Plasma volume slightly increased with water ingestion (7.4 +/- 4.5%), but the decrease was similar with glucose (-7.6 +/- 5.1%) and glucose polymer (-8.2 +/- 4.6%), suggesting that the rate of water delivery to plasma was similar with the two carbohydrates.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The present study investigated potential sex-related differences in the metabolic response to carbohydrate (CHO) ingestion during exercise. Moderately endurance-trained men and women (n = 8 for each sex) performed 2 h of cycling at approximately 67% Vo(2 max) with water (WAT) or CHO ingestion (1.5 g of glucose/min). Substrate oxidation and kinetics were quantified during exercise using indirect calorimetry and stable isotope techniques ([(13)C]glucose ingestion, [6,6-(2)H(2)]glucose, and [(2)H(5)]glycerol infusion). In both sexes, CHO ingestion significantly increased the rates of appearance (R(a)) and disappearance (R(d)) of glucose during exercise compared with WAT ingestion [males: WAT, approximately 28-29 micromol x kg lean body mass (LBM)(-1) x min(-1); CHO, approximately 53 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); females: WAT, approximately 28-29 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); CHO, approximately 61 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); main effect of trial, P < 0.05]. The contribution of plasma glucose oxidation to the energy yield was significantly increased with CHO ingestion in both sexes (from approximately 10% to approximately 20% of energy expenditure; main effect of trial, P < 0.05). Liver-derived glucose oxidation was reduced, although the rate of muscle glycogen oxidation was unaffected with CHO ingestion (males: WAT, 108 +/- 12 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); CHO, 108 +/- 11 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); females: WAT, 89 +/- 10 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); CHO, 93 +/- 11 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1)). CHO ingestion reduced fat oxidation and lipolytic rate (R(a) glycerol) to a similar extent in both sexes. Finally, ingested CHO was oxidized at similar rates in men and women during exercise (peak rates of 0.70 +/- 0.08 and 0.65 +/- 0.06 g/min, respectively). The present investigation suggests that the metabolic response to CHO ingestion during exercise is largely similar in men and women.  相似文献

Carbohydrate (CHO) supplements of different concentrations were compared with water to determine their effects on thermal regulation and plasma volume maintenance while subjects exercised for 2 h in the heat and to determine their impact on carbohydrate utilization. Trained cyclists (n = 12) rode at 48.8 +/- 0.8% maximal O2 consumption in an environmental chamber maintained at 33.0 +/- 0.1 degree C and 51.7 +/- 1.4% relative humidity on three separate occasions. During each exercise bout the subjects received 3 ml/kg body wt of H2O, a 2.0% glucose polymer (LC) solution, or an 8.5% glucose polymer (HC) solution every 15 min. Muscle biopsies from the vastus lateralis were obtained before and after the H2O and HC trials only. Rectal temperature and heart rate, but not O2 consumption, rose from the 10- to 120-min period of exercise. No differences among treatments were found for these variables. There were also no significant differences among treatments for percent changes in plasma volume and blood volume. Plasma glucose and insulin were unchanged during the H2O and LC trials but were significantly elevated during the HC trial. In addition, CHO oxidation was significantly greater during the HC trial than during the H2O trial from 60 to 120 min of exercise. The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that the oxidation rate of ingested carbohydrate (CHO) is impaired during exercise in the heat compared with a cool environment. Nine trained cyclists (maximal oxygen consumption 65 +/- 1 ml x kg body wt(-1) x min(-1)) exercised on two different occasions for 90 min at 55% maximum power ouptput at an ambient temperature of either 16.4 +/- 0.2 degrees C (cool trial) or 35.4 +/- 0.1 degrees C (heat trial). Subjects received 8% glucose solutions that were enriched with [U-13C]glucose for measurements of exogenous glucose, plasma glucose, liver-derived glucose and muscle glycogen oxidation. Exogenous glucose oxidation during the final 30 min of exercise was significantly (P < 0.05) lower in the heat compared with the cool trial (0.76 +/- 0.06 vs. 0.84 +/- 0.05 g/min). Muscle glycogen oxidation during the final 30 min of exercise was increased by 25% in the heat (2.07 +/- 0.16 vs. 1.66 +/- 0.09 g/min; P < 0.05), and liver-derived glucose oxidation was not different. There was a trend toward a higher total CHO oxidation and a lower plasma glucose oxidation in the heat although this did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.087 and P = 0.082, respectively). These results demonstrate that the oxidation rate of ingested CHO is reduced and muscle glycogen utilization is increased during exercise in the heat compared with a cool environment.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to characterize the volumes and rates of gastric emptying of both liquid and gas following the ingestion of beverages of varying carbonation and carbohydrate levels. Eight subjects drank 800 ml each of four test beverages in a counterbalanced order: water, a non-carbonated carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (NC), a lightly carbonated carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (PC), and a carbonated cola (CC). T2-weighted, echoplanar images (25-30 contiguous slices, 1 cm thick, 256 x 128 matrix, TE = 80, 40 cm FOV) of the abdomen were collected at minutes 3,110, 20, 30, 45, and 60 following beverage ingestion. Images were analyzed for gas and liquid volumes. Water and NC emptied the most rapidly, with half times of 21(3) and 31(3) min, respectively [mean (SE)]. PC emptied significantly slower [47 (6) min] and CC slower yet [107 (8) min]. The carbonation content of the beverage accounted for 84% of the variation in emptying time, whereas carbohydrate content did not account for any significant variation. The gastric gas volume of the CC was higher at 2 min post-ingestion compared with all other drinks; however, the rate of emptying of the gas was the same among all beverages. Significantly greater total gastric volumes (gas+ liquid) were associated with the ingestion of CC, and accordingly produced a greater severity of gastric distress, as evaluated with a gastric distress inventory. The high gastric gas volumes (approximately 600 ml) after ingestion of CC suggested a potential source of error in body composition using standard hydrostatic weighing methods. This prediction was tested in nine additional subjects. Ingestion of 800 ml of CC prior to hydrostatic weighing resulted in a 0.7% underestimate of body density and thus an 11% overestimate of percentage body fat compared to measurements made before beverage consumption.  相似文献

There has been recent interest in the potential performance and metabolic effects of carbohydrate ingestion during exercise lasting approximately 1 h. In this study, 13 well-trained men ingested in randomized order either a 6% glucose solution (CHO trial) or a placebo (Con trial) during exercise to exhaustion at 83+/-1% peak oxygen uptake. In six subjects, vastus lateralis muscle was sampled at rest, at 32 min, and at exhaustion, and in six subjects, glucose kinetics was determined by infusion of [6,6-(2)H]glucose in both trials and ingestion of [6-(3)H]glucose in the CHO trial. Of the 84 g of glucose ingested during exercise in the CHO trial, only 22 g appeared in the peripheral circulation. This resulted in a small (12 g) but significant (P<0.05) increase in glucose uptake without influencing carbohydrate oxidation, muscle glycogen use, or time to exhaustion (CHO: 68.1+/-4.1 min; Con: 69.6+/-5.5 min). Decreases in muscle phosphocreatine content and increases in muscle inosine monophosphate and lactate content during exercise were similar in the two trials. Although endogenous glucose production during exercise was partially suppressed in the CHO trial, it remained significantly above preexercise levels throughout exercise. In conclusion, only 26% of the ingested glucose appeared in the peripheral circulation. Glucose ingestion increased glucose uptake and partially reduced endogenous glucose production but had no effect on carbohydrate oxidation, muscle metabolism, or time to exhaustion during exercise at 83% peak oxygen uptake.  相似文献

Six endurance-trained men [peak oxygen uptake (V(O(2))) = 4.58 +/- 0.50 (SE) l/min] completed 60 min of exercise at a workload requiring 68 +/- 2% peak V(O(2)) in an environmental chamber maintained at 35 degrees C (<50% relative humidity) on two occasions, separated by at least 1 wk. Subjects ingested either a 6% glucose solution containing 1 microCi [3-(3)H]glucose/g glucose (CHO trial) or a sweet placebo (Con trial) during the trials. Rates of hepatic glucose production [HGP = glucose rate of appearance (R(a)) in Con trial] and glucose disappearance (R(d)), were measured using a primed, continuous infusion of [6,6-(2)H]glucose, corrected for gut-derived glucose (gut R(a)) in the CHO trial. No differences in heart rate, V(O(2)), respiratory exchange ratio, or rectal temperature were observed between trials. Plasma glucose concentrations were similar at rest but increased (P < 0.05) to a greater extent in the CHO trial compared with the Con trial. This was due to the absorption of ingested glucose in the CHO trial, because gut R(a) after 30 and 50 min (16 +/- 5 micromol. kg(-1). min(-1)) was higher (P < 0.05) compared with rest, whereas HGP during exercise was not different between trials. Glucose R(d) was higher (P < 0.05) in the CHO trial after 30 and 50 min (48.0 +/- 6.3 vs 34.6 +/- 3.8 micromol. kg(-1). min(-1), CHO vs. Con, respectively). These results indicate that ingestion of carbohydrate, at a rate of approximately 1.0 g/min, increases glucose R(d) but does not blunt the rise in HGP during exercise in the heat.  相似文献

Eighty-seven healthy volunteers ingested a purple-fleshed sweet potato beverage with various contents of anthocyanin (beverage A; 22.1 mg/250 ml, B; 107.8, C; 84.9). An acylated anthocyanin, peonidin 3-caffeoylsophoroside-5-glucoside, was detected in the urine 2 h after ingestion. The concentrations were 15.1+/-2.2 microg/l of urine (mean+/-SEM), 46.6+/-5.3, and 53.3+/-2.2 for beverages A, B, and C respectively.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the level of agreement between two techniques commonly used to measure exogenous carbohydrate oxidation (CHO(EXO)). To accomplish this, seven healthy male subjects (24 +/- 3 yr, 74.8 +/- 2.1 kg, V(O2(max)) 62 +/- 4 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) exercised at 50% of their peak power for 120 min on two occasions. During these exercise bouts, subjects ingested a solution containing either 144 g glucose (8.7% wt/vol glucose) or water. The glucose solution contained trace amounts of both [U-13C]glucose and [U-14C]glucose to allow CHO(EXO) to be quantified simultaneously. The water trial was used to correct for background 13C enrichment. 13C appearance in the expired air was measured using isotope ratio mass spectrometry, whereas 14C appearance was quantified by trapping expired CO(2) in solution (using hyamine hydroxide) and adding a scintillator before counting radioactivity. CHO(EXO) measured with [13C]glucose ([13C]CHO(EXO)) was significantly greater than CHO(EXO) measured with [14C]glucose ([14C]CHO(EXO)) from 30 to 120 min. There was a 15 +/- 4% difference between [13C]CHO(EXO) and [14C]CHO(EXO) such that the absolute difference increased with the magnitude of CHO(EXO). Further investigations suggest that the difference is not because of losses of CO2 from the trapping solution before counting or an underestimation of the "strength" of the trapping solution. Previous research suggests that the degree of isotopic fractionation is small (S. C. Kalhan, S. M. Savin, and P. A. Adam. J Lab Clin Med89: 285-294, 1977). Therefore, the explanation for the discrepancy in calculated CHO(EXO) remains to be fully understood.  相似文献
