We compared the general activity and heavy metal resistance of non-specific esterases in two populations of the leaf beetle Chrysomela lapponica from habitats severely contaminated by heavy metals (mostly Ni and Cu) and two populations from unpolluted habitats. Concentrations of Ni and Cu in adult beetles from the most polluted site were 7.7 and 3.6 times higher that in beetles from unpolluted habitats. Larval esterases showed higher activity and lower susceptibility to heavy metals than esterases of adults. Larval esterase activity did not differ between populations from polluted and unpolluted sites, but adult beetles from polluted localities had lower esterase activity than beetles from unpolluted habitats. Both Cu and Ni sulfates in millimolar concentrations in vitro suppressed esterase activity of larvae from unpolluted habitats, but caused no negative effect on esterases of larvae from polluted sites. Similarly, inhibition of adult esterase activity by Ni was stronger in beetles from unpolluted localities than in beetles from polluted localities. This indicates that resistance of non-specific esterases to heavy metals is higher in leaf beetle populations from contaminated environment.  相似文献

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) serve as important infochemicals, mediating several ecological interactions including herbivory and pollination. Atmospheric pollutants including traffic‐related air pollution may impair the detection of VOCs used by insects in insect–plant interactions. We investigated the indirect effect of petrol exhaust pollution on olfactory learning and memory (short and long term) in honey bees. Using appetitive olfactory conditioning, we trained bees to learn one of four floral VOC profiles; linalool, dipentene, myrcene and geranium. VOCs were unpolluted or polluted with exhaust collected from a petrol generator. Exhaust emissions included concentrations of CO (246.07 + 17 ppm), NO (20.50 + 6.90 ppb) and NO2 (20.93 + 0.05 ppb) consistent with those typically encountered in urban areas and near roads. Once bees had learnt the training VOC, we tested whether they could recognise that VOC 1 h, 24 h and 48 h post‐training. Bees took significantly longer to learn polluted VOCs and forgot them faster than unpolluted ones. We also tested the ‘masking’ potential of pollution on floral VOCs. Using gas chromatography mass spectroscopy we noted differences in the chemical profile of polluted versus unpolluted VOCs and tested whether bees could recognise polluted VOCs if trained using unpolluted ones. For several VOCs tested, bees could distinguish between polluted and unpolluted VOCs. Ultimately, our results show that air pollution changes the recognition and retention of floral VOCs by bees which may consequently impact foraging efficiency.  相似文献

Common dandelions (Taraxacum officinale Weber, sensu lato; Asteraceae) introduced to North America form an assemblage of asexual (agamospermous), clonal lineages derived from Eurasian mixed sexual and asexual populations. We investigated whether selection for more pollution tolerant clonal lineages occurs at polluted sites and selection for more pollution intolerant lineages occurs at unpolluted sites. We tested the above hypothesis by performing reciprocal greenhouse productivity experiments in which unique dandelion clones (12 clones, identified by DNA fingerprinting, from each site type) sampled from two unpolluted and two polluted (moderately enhanced Cu, Pb and Zn soil concentrations) sites were grown pairwise in both unpolluted (nutrient solution only) and polluted (nutrient solution + Cu, Pb and Zn) media (n?=?48 paired tests for each media type). Dandelion clones from polluted sites produced fewer and smaller leaves, shorter roots and smaller root diameters, reduced shoot and root dry weights, and reduced total biomass compared to clones from unpolluted sites when clones were grown in unpolluted-media (P?≤?0.05). In contrast, clones taken from unpolluted sites were shown to produce significantly fewer and shorter leaves, shorter roots and smaller root diameters, reduced shoot and root dry weights, reduced total biomass, a reduced shoot : root biomass ratio, and have much lower survival compared to clones from polluted sites when both were grown in polluted-media (P?≤?0.05). These results reveal that there was increased selection against unpolluted-site clonal lineages in polluted-media and against polluted-site clonal lineages in unpolluted-media. Across all treatments, clones from unpolluted sites growing in unpolluted-media had the highest proximate measures of fitness. Overall, these findings provide insight into the relationships among anthropogenic environmental contamination and the consequent effects of selective forces acting on dandelion clones and their population genetic architecture.  相似文献

The formation of calcium‐containing structures on the thallial surface of the lichen Ramalina lacera (With.) J.R. Laund. in response to air pollution and to simulated acid rain, was studied in in situ and transplanted thalli. In situ thalli were collected from an unpolluted site and transplanted to heavily polluted and less polluted sites for a 10 month period. Additional thalli were treated either with double distilled water or with simulated acid rain. Scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectrometry revealed that thallial surfaces of in situ R. lacera samples collected in unpolluted sites were covered with two kinds of calcium oxalate crystals: whewellite and weddellite. These aggregates of calcium oxalate crystals appear to disintegrate and provide a crystal layer on the thallial surface. Infrared spectroscopy of powder scraped from thallial surfaces of transplants, retrieved from non‐polluted sites, showed the presence of whewellite and weddellite, whereas powders obtained from thalli retrieved from polluted sites contained whewellite, weddellite and gypsum. It is suggested that a certain fraction of the gypsum detected in crater‐like structures in transplants from polluted sites and in thalli treated with simulated acid rain is endogenous and should be considered a biomineral.  相似文献

Fourteen morphometric variables of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) leaves from two sites in the Upper Silesia province were analyzed to establish the pattern of intrapopulational and interpopulational relations. The leaves were collected from ten trees growing on a zinc–lead dump as well as from ten trees in the unpolluted area of Mirów within the same bioclimatic region. Leaf samples were collected from the trees during the vegetative seasons 1999 and 2000. The size and shape of leaves were studied using standard biometric methods. Cluster analysis indicated overall differences between the populations. Both populations differed with respect to almost all the morphometric variables (P<0.05). Most variables of the leaves, collected from single trees (or combined as a total) on the zinc–lead dump showed more variability than those from the unpolluted site. Discriminant function analysis confirmed the angle of the leaf base as the most important variable in the evaluation of interpopulational variability of leaves.  相似文献

A study was made of water, sediments and invertebrates in the R. Derwent, North-East England, at one site above and three sites below a stream bringing in high concentrations of Zn, Cd and Pb derived from an active fluorspar mine. The mean concentrations of these metals in filtrable water at the unpolluted site were 0.020, <0.0003, 0.005 mg l-1, respectively, while those at the first polluted site were 0.29, 0.0006, 0.016 mg l-1. The benthic macroinvertebrate fauna was dominated by insects; all taxa present at the unpolluted site were represented at one or more of the polluted sites. In almost all cases the elevated concentrations of metals in water and sediments at polluted sites were paralleled by higher concentrations in animals. Significant positive correlations were demonstrated between metal concentrations in certain taxa and those in their environment e.g. Ecdyonurus venosus and aqueous Pb. Mayflies tended to concentrate Zn, Cd and Pb to higher levels than other groups. Comparison of carnivorous species with other taxa revealed no indication of increased metal concentrations at higher trophic levels.  相似文献

We isolated 400 aerobic heterotrophic bacteria from the sediment of unpolluted and polluted sites in a fast-flowing south Wales river. Isolates were subjected to taxonomic tests and screened for the presence of plasmid DNA by alkaline lysis and agarose gel techniques. There were no significant differences between sites in either the total percentage of isolates containing plasmids (unpolluted site, 9.4%; polluted site, 15%) or in the percentage of non-Pseudomonas-like isolates containing plasmids (unpolluted site, 15%; polluted site, 10%). There were significantly more Pseudomonas-like isolates with plasmids at the polluted site than at the unpolluted site (unpolluted site, 7%; polluted site, 18%). This presumably reflected a response of the nutritionally versatile Pseudomonas-like isolates to conditions at that site. The majority (86%) of the plasmids detected had molecular masses between 35 and 312 megadaltons. These plasmids were large enough to carry genes for conjugal transfer, suggesting the possibility of such transfer in this environment.  相似文献

Yeast counts were made at 24 marine and estuarine sites in the vicinity of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Mean salinities of estuarine sites ranged from 14.2 to 27.4‰, and mean temperatures ranged from 25 to 28°C. Total coliform counts varied from 80% above 100,000 colony-forming units (CFU)/100 ml at heavily polluted sites to 100% below 100 CFU/100 ml at unpolluted sites. Total yeast counts above 100 CFU/100 ml were typical of heavily and moderately polluted water but atypical of lightly polluted and unpolluted water. Mean total yeast counts were 2,880 CFU/100 ml for heavily polluted sites, 202 CFU/100 ml for moderately polluted sites, and 3 CFU/100 ml for lightly polluted and unpolluted sites. Total yeast counts had a positive response to increased pollution levels, and Candida krusei and phenotypically similar yeasts as a group were prevalent in polluted estuarine water but rare in unpolluted seawater. The 549 strains of yeasts and yeast-like organisms isolated were grouped into 67 species, of which the 21 most prevalent made up 86% of the total yeast population. The prevalent genera in the polluted estuary were Candida, Rhodotorula, Torulopsis, Hanseniaspora, Debaryomyces, and Trichosporon.  相似文献

Analysis of trace metals from sediment and fish collected from eight locations in Lake Manzala, Egypt, during May, June and July of 2011, indicated anthropogenic impacts. The highest concentrations of metals, except Mn and Sr, were detected at Bahr Al-Baqar (S1) which drains from Cairo. At the other sampling locations, the concentrations of selected trace metals fall below the levels of concern while the geo-accumulation index (Igeo) suggests unpolluted conditions for the majority of the studied metals at most sites. However, near the Bahr Al-Baqar (S1) drain concentrations of Ag, Hg and Zn fall above the Long and Morgan's (1990) effects range low (ERL) while Pb was above their effects range median (ERM). Igeo values suggest unpolluted to moderately polluted condition for As and Sn, moderately polluted conditions for Zn, moderate to extremely polluted conditions for Ag, and severely to extremely polluted conditions for Pb at Bahr Al-Baqar. Two sites (Legan, S5, and Al-Ginka, S8) were indicated by Igeo as moderately polluted for Ag while two other sites (West of Bashar, S3, and Al Dehdy, S6) were indicated as unpolluted to moderately polluted for Ag. The Legan and Al-Ginka sites were also indicated as being moderately polluted for Zn. Similar to the sediments, the highest concentrations of metals in fish tissue were from Bahr Al-Baqar (S1). Al concentrations at all sites were comparable to concentrations known to cause lesions in fish. At all sites concentrations of selected trace metals in fish tissue were below the limits set by the FAO.  相似文献

The respiratory and enzymatic activity of bacteria in polluted and unpolluted river water was investigated by flow cytometry. Double staining with 6CFDA (6-carboxy fluorescein diacetate) and PI (propidium iodide) was used to examine bacterial esterase activity. CTC (5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazolium chloride) was employed as the indicator of bacterial respiration. The ratios of colony-forming units to total bacterial number were less than 2%, except highly polluted sites. The number of respiring bacteria determined by flow cytometry amounted to 10–15% of the total bacterial number at both unpolluted and polluted sampling stations, while it was 30% at the highly polluted station. Almost 50% of total bacteria demonstrated esterase activity in the unpolluted areas, whereas 70–90% of total bacteria retained this enzymatic activity in the polluted areas. Thus, many of the non-culturable bacteria in the natural aquatic environment have enzymatic activity regardless of the pollution level, and 6CFDA was more superior in the sensitivity for the evaluation of physiological activity of bacteria in the natural environment. The ratio of bacteria with esterase activity increased in direct proportion to the pollution level of river water and suggested that this ratio would be a useful indicator in evaluating the pollution levels in an aquatic environment.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to investigate the potential of Vossia cuspidata as a phytoremediator to accumulate heavy metals from polluted water bodies. Thirty-two quadrats, distributed equally in eight sites (six polluted sites along the Ismailia canal and two unpolluted sites along the Nile River) were selected seasonally for plant, water, and sediment investigations. Winter plants recorded the highest values of shoot height, diameter, and leaf width, but the lowest shoot density. Plants collected in autumn had the lowest values of leaf length, width, and area, while those collected in spring had the highest shoot density, with the lowest shoot height. Summer populations had the highest fresh and dry plant biomass, while winter plants had the lowest. Fresh production and dry biomass of V. cuspidata in the unpolluted Nile were significantly higher than those in polluted canals. Chlorophyll a and carotenoid concentrations were reduced under pollution stress. Spring plants accumulated the highest concentrations of Cr, Cu, and Pb in their root, and the lowest concentrations of Al, Cd, Cr, and Zn in their shoot. The bioaccumulation factor for most investigated metals, except Al, Cr, and Fe was greater than 1, while the translocation factor of all metals was less than 1, therefore this plant is considered to be a potential for these metals phytostabilization.  相似文献

The large-scale effects of habitat alteration produced by oil-industry related pollution on the habitat use of four species of freshwater turtles (Pelusios castaneus, Pelusios niger, Pelomedusa subrufa, Trionyx triunguis) were studied in the River Niger Delta, southern Nigeria (West Africa) between 1996 and 2004. The numbers of turtle specimens observed during our study declined drastically in polluted sites, despite a nearly identical field effort. The number of specimens of all turtle species declined considerably at all habitat types, but complete disappearance in polluted areas was found only with regard to one habitat type for Trionyx triunguis and two habitat types for Pelomedusa subrufa. The mean values of species dominance and diversity indexes were not statistically significant between pristine and altered areas. Based on the interspecific similarity in proportional frequencies of turtle specimens found in each habitat type, a multivariate set of analyses (UPGMA) showed that the turtles were arranged in three ‘ecological’ clusters: a group formed by Pelomedusa subrufa at both polluted and unpolluted areas and Trionyx triunguis at polluted areas; (ii) a group formed by Pelusios castaneus in polluted areas and Pelusios niger in polluted areas; (iii) a group formed by Pelusios castaneus in unpolluted areas and Pelusios niger in unpolluted areas; however, this latter cluster was not very close, as the linkage distance was close to 80% of Euclidean distance. Habitat use similarity among turtles in both polluted and unpolluted study areas was evaluated by the use of two types of overlap formulas (Pianka and Czechanowski) and the use of Monte Carlo randomisations in order to control for the eventual role of chance in the actual data matrix. These data indicated that, for a pair of species (Pelusios niger vs. Pelusios castaneus), there was a statistically significant increase in the similarity of habitat use in the polluted areas vs. the unpolluted areas, and that this pattern was not dependent on the chance. Considering that these two species are ecologically and morphologically similar, we conclude that the most likely consequence at the community level is an increase in the intensity of interspecific competition for space between Pelusios niger and Pelusios castaneus in the polluted areas. Although the direction of the intensification of this competition process could not be easily predicted, it is likely that the species which is least adapted to life in main rivers and creeks may be disadvantaged over the other competitor. The general implications for habitat preservation are also discussed.  相似文献

The main objectives of this study were to determine the floristic composition of the vegetation cover and to find the effects of wastewater pollution on the plant community structure in eastern Saudi Arabia. 28 stands which were distributed among polluted and unpolluted sites, were chosen for this study. A total of 42 plant species were recorded (14 in the polluted and 28 in the unpolluted sites). The recorded plants comprised of 13 perennial plant species and 29 annual plant species. Seven vegetation communities were determined using TWINSPAN and DCA classification and ordination techniques. Three in the polluted sites, two in the unpolluted sites and the remaining two were mixed communities. The (Sarcopoterium spinosum – Pistacia len‐tiscus) community in the polluted sites, had the highest values of soil moisture, salinity, sulphate, calcium and potassium. On the other hand, Juniperus phoenicea – Olea europaea community in the unpolluted site, had the lowest value of organic matter, salinity and magnesium. In respect of genetic diversity, the community of Foeniculum vulgare - Nicotiana glauca in the unpolluted site, was the most diverse, while Ricinus communis - Chrysanthemum coronarium in the polluted sites was the least one. Both soil and wastewater heavy metal analysis indicated that Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu and Ni concentrations in the polluted sites were significantly higher than those in the unpolluted ones. The impact of wastewater discharge led to the appearance of new invasive plant species that may significantly affect plant diversity and community structure in eastern Saudi Arabia. Finally wastewater discharge in open rangelands could adversely affect the growth of plant species in the rangelands and thus adversely affect plant community structure and diversity.  相似文献

Morphological characters, AFLP markers and flow cytometry were used to investigate the morphological and genetic variability and differentiation of Viola reichenbachiana and V. riviniana in non‐metallicolous (NM) and metallicolous (M) populations. The aims were to clarify the taxonomic status of plants occurring in ore‐bearing areas, to determine any relationship in V. reichenbachiana and V. riviniana from sites not polluted with heavy metals, and to examine the genetic variability and differentiation of M and NM populations of both species. Multivariate analyses based on morphological characters showed significant differences between V. reichenbachiana and V. riviniana from non‐polluted sites, high levels of intra‐ and inter‐population variability, and the occurrence of inter‐specific hybrids. Plants from M populations showed hybrid characters but also fell within the range of V. riviniana or V. reichenbachiana. There were no significant differences in relative genome size between plants from polluted areas and V. riviniana from NM populations. Bayesian analysis of population genetic structure based on AFLP markers distinguished two main groups: V. reichenbachiana and V. riviniana together with the M populations. That analysis also revealed the occurrence of populations of inter‐specific hybrids from non‐polluted areas. Further Bayesian analysis of V. riviniana including NM and M populations separated all the studied M populations from NM populations. We conclude that plants forming the M populations are well adapted to a metal‐polluted environment, and could be considered as stabilised introgressive forms resulting from unidirectional (asymmetric) introgression toward V. riviniana.  相似文献

Abstract

Although developmental instability (DI), measured as fluctuating asymmetry (FA), is expected to be positively related to environmental stress and negatively to habitat quality, the pattern found here was the reverse. Developmental instability of leaf traits (leaf width and vein distances within a leaf) was estimated (using two indices of FA: FA4 and σi 2) and compared between three populations of Plantago major L. (Plantaginaceae) from northern Serbia. Two of the populations are from chronically polluted areas (Karaburma & Zemun), while Crni Lug is from an unpolluted, natural area. Results obtained using both FA indices were the same; higher asymmetry levels in the unpolluted area than in the polluted sites, were found for both traits. Between the two polluted sites, FA values were significantly higher in Karaburma site for vein distances within a leaf. Concerning differences in FA4 values between samples, in two cases, results are similar to those found for σi 2 values, for vein distances within leaf. These are the first quantitative data on P. major indicating that (i) plants living in the stressful sites are more symmetrical and (ii) leaf FA for plant species with wide ecological distribution such as P. major should be considered as an ‘index of habitat quality.’  相似文献

Many common environmental pollutants, together with nuclear radiation, are recognized as genotoxic. There is, however, very little information on pollution-related genetic effects on free-living animal populations, especially in terrestrial ecosystems. We investigated whether genetic diversity in two small insectivorous passerines, the great tit (Parus major) and the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca), was changed near point sources of heavy metals (two copper smelters) or radioactive isotopes (nuclear material reprocessing plant). We measured concentration of heavy metals and nucleotide diversity in mitochondrial DNA in feather samples taken from nestlings in multiple polluted areas and at control sites. In both species, heavy metal concentrations - especially of arsenic - were increased in feathers collected at smelter sites. The P. major population living near a smelter showed significantly higher nucleotide diversity than a control population in an unpolluted site, suggesting increased mutation rates in a polluted environment. On the contrary, F. hypoleuca showed reduced nucleotide diversity at both smelter sites but increased nucleotide diversity near the source of radioactivity. Our results show that heavy metal pollution and low level nuclear radiation affect the nucleotide diversity in two free-living insectivorous passerines. We suggest that the different response in these two species may be due to their different ability to handle toxic compounds in the body.  相似文献

用Gessner等提出的树叶凋落物分解模式对横石水河的功能完整性和生态系统健康进行评价,对比了藜蒴和荷木2个树种的树叶凋落物在横石水河各污染样点和未受污染样点的分解速率.结果表明:藜蒴和荷木树叶凋落物在研究区污染样点的分解速率均显著低于清洁样点(P<0.05);根据Gessner模式,各污染样点的环境得分均为0,而各清洁样点的环境得分均为2,表明横石水河污染河段的健康状态已受到严重破坏.研究区生态系统健康的生物学评价与水质分析结果一致,表明树叶凋落物分解模式是一个合适的评价河流状态的指数.  相似文献

The responses of glutathione, glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), and catalase (CAT) were determined in 1-day-old larvae of Chorthippus brunneus Thunberg, 1815, a grasshopper exposed to zinc during diapause, from unpolluted (Pilica) or polluted (Olkusz, Szopienice) sites. The aim of the work was to search for differences among populations of the insects as a result of various multistress pressures in their habitats. The question of zinc toxicity in the context of energy allocation was also considered. Zinc caused a decrease in glutathione concentration in the body of zinc-treated larvae. Significant differences between control and zinc-treated groups were confirmed for young females' progeny from Pilica and Olkusz as well as old females' progeny from Olkusz. GSTs activity was generally not influenced by zinc. It is possible that GSTs were not the most important target of zinc action. On the contrary, the influence of zinc on CAT activity was found. The increase in CAT activity after zinc treatment was similar for all studied populations. An increase in CAT activity after zinc exposure seems to be the most universal reaction. CAT activity in zinc-treated grasshoppers may explain the mechanism of zinc toxicity based on reactive oxygen forms generation.  相似文献
