The current aging population of captive chimpanzees is expected to develop age-related diseases and present new challenges to providing their veterinary care. Spontaneous heart disease and sudden cardiac death are the main causes of death in chimpanzees (especially of male animals), but little is known about the relative frequency of other chronic diseases. Furthermore, female chimpanzees appear to outlive the males and scant literature addresses clinical conditions that affect female chimpanzees. Here we characterize the types and prevalence of chronic disease seen in geriatric (older than 35 y) female chimpanzees in the colony at Alamogordo Primate Facility. Of the 16 female chimpanzees that fit the age category, 87.5% had some form of chronic age-related disease. Cardiovascular-related disease was the most common (81.25%) followed by metabolic syndrome (43.75%) and renal disease (31.25%). These data show the incidence of disease in geriatric female chimpanzees and predict likely medical management challenges associated with maintaining an aging chimpanzee population.  相似文献

Background  Assessment of cerebrospinal (CSF) monoamine metabolites 5-hydroxyindoeacetic acid (5-HIAA) and homovanillic acid (HVA), and the serotonin precursor tryptophan (TRP), in chimpanzees may help in understanding the neurobiology underlying aggressive, impulsive behavior in humans and non-human primates.
Methods  Two CSF samples were obtained from 11 peripubertal chimpanzees 8 months apart and were assayed for monoamine metabolite and TRP concentrations.
Results  Substantial inter-individual stability was observed for 5-HIAA (n = 11; r = 0.83, P  <   0.001) and HVA (r = 0.91, P  <   0.001). Females had significantly higher concentrations of 5-HIAA compared to males (F1,8 = 7.31; P  <   0.05). Levels of 5-HIAA (r = −0.62, P  <   0.05), HVA (r = −0.86, P  <   0.001) and TRP levels (r = −0.67; P  <   0.05) decreased with age.
Conclusion  Close parallels were observed between chimpanzees and humans with respect to absolute levels, sex effects, ontogeny, and 5-HIAA-HVA correlations, supporting the potential utility of the measures in understanding relationships between monoamine functioning and behavior in chimpanzees and humans.  相似文献

Understanding the rates and causes of mortality in wild chimpanzee populations has important implications for a variety of fields, including wildlife conservation and human evolution. Because chimpanzees are long-lived, accurate mortality data requires very long-term studies. Here, we analyze 47 years of data on the Kasekela community in Gombe National Park. Community size fluctuated between 38 and 60, containing 60 individuals in 2006. From records on 220 chimpanzees and 130 deaths, we found that the most important cause of mortality in the Kasekela community was illness (58% of deaths with known cause), followed by intraspecific aggression (20% of deaths with known cause). Previous studies at other sites also found that illness was the primary cause of mortality and that some epidemic disease could be traced to humans. As at other study sites, most deaths due to illness occurred during epidemics, and the most common category of disease was respiratory. Intraspecific lethal aggression occurred within the community, including the killing of infants by both males and females, and among adult males during the course of dominance-related aggression. Aggression between communities resulted in the deaths of at least five adult males and two adult females in the Kasekela and Kahama communities. The frequency of intercommunity violence appears to vary considerably among sites and over time. Intercommunity lethal aggression involving the Kasekela community was observed most frequently during two periods. Other less common causes of death included injury, loss of mother, maternal disability, and poaching.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. In insects, larval diet can have a major impact on development, survival, and reproductive success. However, resource availability at the adult phase of the life cycle is also likely to have strong effects in species where there is an extended period of sexual maturation following adult eclosion.
2. The effect of diet on the survival and reproductive success of the lekking Hawaiian fruit fly, Drosophila grimshawi , was explored. Two generations of emerging adults were exposed to one of two feeding regimes: 'constant' and 'varied' (corresponding to food 'each day' or 'every other day' respectively). The impact of resource availability on survival and reproductive success in each generation was then investigated.
3. The probability of survival to 5 weeks old was higher for individuals fed a constant diet than individuals fed a varied diet, but was comparable for males and females.
4. There was a significant maternal effect on offspring survival. Offspring whose mothers were reared on a constant feeding regime had higher survival than offspring whose mothers were reared on a varied diet.
5. There was no relationship between feeding regime and the quantity of pheromones deposited by males (a measure of male reproductive investment); however F2 sons were more likely to deposit pheromones and deposited a larger quantity of pheromone than their F1 sires. The number and sex ratio of offspring (a measure of female reproductive effort) emerging from the F1 generation was unrelated to maternal or paternal feeding regime.
6. The implications of variation in the foraging environment for mate choice in D. grimshawi are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Sexual conflict can play an important role in the evolution of animal life-history characteristics, including lifespan. Seaweed flies show an increase in mortality rates when exposed to brown algae. The seaweed stimulates females to oviposit and males to mount females. Females typically respond to male mounts by performing a violent rejection response.
2. Here the contribution of sexual conflict to the increase in mortality seen in the presence of seaweed was determined. The survival of single and mixed sex pairs of flies was followed in the presence and absence of seaweed.
3. The two sexes showed differential survival rates, with females living longer in the absence of seaweed. The presence of seaweed reduced survival in both sexes. In the presence of seaweed, female survival was lower when paired with a male. Over 40% of the reduction in survival in females in the presence of seaweed appears to be attributable to sexual conflict.
4. The presence of a female did not significantly affect male survival. Thus the mortality cost of being in the presence of the opposite sex and seaweed appears highly asymmetric.
5. In the presence of seaweed, female survival was lower when females were paired with small males. Small males exhibit higher levels of harassment of females, thus it is argued that pre-copulatory sexual conflict is the probable cause of the increased mortality cost to females of being in the presence of both males and seaweed.  相似文献

Ciliates are some of the most abundant gut fauna in wild chimpanzees. However, their presence in captive populations is usually low presumably due to anti‐helmintic prophylaxis or feeding on low fibre diet. We studied a semi‐captive colony of chimpanzees at the Sweetwaters Sanctuary in Kenya subject to routine prophylactic dose of albendazole to clear chimpanzees of parasitic helminths. Fresh faecal samples from known individuals were collected before and subsequently after prophylaxis. The samples were fixed in 10% formalin and examined by the sedimentation method. Troglodytella abrassarti had 42.5% prevalence whereas other ciliates had 65% prevalence. The prevalence of the T. abrassarti and other ciliates significantly declined immediately after prophylaxis and then rose slowly thereafter. Our results suggest that ciliates are susceptible to anti‐helmintic prophylaxis and that treatment may eliminate ciliates or inhibit their proliferation within the host subsequently lowering their prevalence in the population. Variation in prevalence was not influenced by the age of the host. However, a steady recovery of ciliate prevalence was lower for male compared to female hosts. Our results imply that the intervals between prophylactic regimes could be prolonged differently for males and females to increase the prevalence of ciliates in captive populations.  相似文献

This study reports the rate of fruit phenological pattern of Musanga leo-errerae and how it sustains the chimpanzee population better than other fruits in Kalinzu Forest Reserve. We analysed 2635 faecal samples to determine the proportion of M. leo-errerae by composition of fruit diet compared with other fruits eaten by chimpanzees. Musanga leo-errerae trees were monitored for fruit production between November 2002 and December 2004. Musanga leo-errerae fruit production did not vary significantly between months (ANOVA, F  = 2.0, d.f. = 11, P  = 0.13). The size of fruit and rate maturation varied with seasons, although fruit production was synchronous and available all year round. From the 2635 faecal samples analysed, 79.2% contained M. leo-errerae fruit seed. Chimpanzee diet in Kalinzu is 75% frugivorous, 37.2% of which is solely contributed by M. leo-errerae fruit. The continuous availability of M. leo-errerae fruit makes it the most important food for chimpanzees in this forest, especially during general fruit scarcity there by joining figs in importance for chimpanzee survival in tropical Africa.  相似文献

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is the most common human enzymopathy and in Sub-Saharan Africa, is a significant cause of infection- and drug-induced hemolysis and neonatal jaundice. Our goals were to determine the prevalence of G6PD deficiency among Nigerian children of different ethnic backgrounds and to identify predictors of G6PD deficiency by analyzing vital signs and hematocrit and by asking screening questions about symptoms of hemolysis. We studied 1,122 children (561 males and 561 females) aged 1 month to 15 years. The mean age was 7.4±3.2 years. Children of Yoruba ethnicity made up the largest group (77.5%) followed by those Igbo descent (10.6%) and those of Igede (10.2%) and Tiv (1.8%) ethnicity. G6PD status was determined using the fluorescent spot method. We found that the overall prevalence of G6PD deficiency was 15.3% (24.1% in males, 6.6% in females). Yoruba children had a higher prevalence (16.9%) than Igede (10.5%), Igbo (10.1%) and Tiv (5.0%) children. The odds of G6PD deficiency were 0.38 times as high in Igbo children compared to Yoruba children (p = 0.0500). The odds for Igede and Tiv children were not significantly different from Yoruba children (p = 0.7528 and 0.9789 respectively). Mean oxygen saturation, heart rate and hematocrit were not significantly different in G6PD deficient and G6PD sufficient children. The odds of being G6PD deficient were 2.1 times higher in children with scleral icterus than those without (p = 0.0351). In conclusion, we determined the prevalence of G6PD deficiency in Nigerian sub-populations. The odds of G6PD deficiency were decreased in Igbo children compared to Yoruba children. There was no association between vital parameters or hematocrit and G6PD deficiency. We found that a history of scleral icterus may increase the odds of G6PD deficiency, but we did not exclude other common causes of icterus such as sickle cell disease or malarial infection.  相似文献

Background  Study of endocrine pathology in animal models is critical to understanding endocrine pathology in humans.
Methods  We evaluated 434 endocrine-related diagnoses from 4619 baboon necropsies, established the incidence of spontaneous endocrine pathology, and analyzed the clinical and biochemical data associated with the individual cases.
Results  The most common diagnoses in descending order, were pancreatic islet cell amyloidosis (n = 259), ovarian cysts (n = 50), pituitary adenoma (n = 37), pancreatic islet cell adenoma (n = 20), granulosa cell tumor (n = 15), thyroid adenoma (n = 11), adrenal hyperplasia (n = 10), thyroid carcinoma (n = 8), and pheochromocytoma (n = 6). The incidence of pancreatic islet cell amyloidosis progressively increased with age. Pheochromocytomas were associated with renal and heart failure. The incidence of pancreatic islet cell amyloidosis and adrenal pathology was similar to humans; the incidence of pituitary adenoma and thyroid pathology was lower than in humans.
Conclusions  Endocrine disease in baboons is common and shares clinical and biochemical characteristics with endocrine disease in humans.  相似文献

1 Recent studies have shown that continuous access to a protein source (yeast hydrolysate) can greatly enhance the sexual performance of male Queensland fruit flies ( Bactrocera tryoni ; 'Q-flies'). However, in Sterile Insect Technique programmes used to eradicate or suppress wild populations, mass-reared Q-flies are typically fed only sucrose and water for up to 2 days before release.
2 We investigated whether adding a protein source to the diet of male Q-flies for a 24- or 48-h window after emergence and then removing it is sufficient to enhance mating probability, latency to mate, copula duration, probability of sperm storage, number of sperm stored, female remating tendency and longevity of male Q-flies.
3 Protein-fed males were more likely to mate than males fed only sucrose, especially when young. Protein-fed males also had shorter mating latencies and longer copulations than protein-deprived males.
4 Females mated by protein-fed males were more likely to store sperm, stored more sperm and were less likely to remate than were females mated by protein-deprived males. Females were also less likely to remate if their first mate had been large.
5 Overall, providing male Q-flies access to a protein source for a 24- or 48-h window early on in their adult life was sufficient to greatly enhance all assessed measures of performance. Although 24-h access was sufficient for a notable enhancement, further benefits were evident in males provided 48-h access.
6 The results are discussed in terms of the practical implications for Sterile Insect Technique programs used to eradicate or suppress wild Q-fly populations.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Females often select mates based on signals correlated with the quality of the direct benefits that males will provide to them. A male's quality as a mate and the structure of his mating signals may covary because both traits are energetically expensive for males to produce and because both traits are affected by short-term changes in nutritional condition.
2. In the variable field cricket, Gryllus lineaticeps , previous work has shown that females receive reproductive benefits from males that produce higher chirp rates and lifespan benefits from males that produce longer chirp durations, even when they only receive the sperm and seminal fluid contained in male spermatophores. Higher chirp rates are energetically expensive for males to produce, and chirp rate is strongly affected by diet quality, whereas longer chirp durations do not appear to be expensive for males to produce, and chirp duration does not appear to be affected by male diet quality. In this study two hypotheses were tested about the energetic costs of spermatophore production: (1) that spermatophores are expensive for males to produce and (2) that males providing greater direct benefits to females incur higher costs of spermatophore production.
3. Males that were provided with a lower quality diet took longer to produce a new spermatophore. This result suggests that spermatophores are costly for males to produce.
4. Males that produced higher chirp rates took longer to produce a new spermatophore. This result suggests that male chirp rate and female reproductive benefits may covary because both traits are energetically expensive for males to produce and thus are affected by male nutritional condition. There was no association, however, between male chirp duration and spermatophore production time.  相似文献

Gypsy moth mating disruption in open landscapes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1 Aerial applications of Disrupt II, a plastic laminated flake formulation containing a racemic form of the gypsy moth sex pheromone, disparlure, achieved > 99% reduction of mating among females on individual, isolated trees surrounded by an area cleared of trees.
2 These results support the use of mating disruption to eradicate isolated gypsy moth populations in open landscapes, such as parks, residential areas and commercial settings.
3 Mating success in both treated and untreated areas varied with the initial distance between males and females. When the initial distance between males and females was < 5 cm in an area receiving a dosage of 37.5 g of racemic disparlure per ha, mating success was reduced by 27% compared with a similar deployment in an untreated area. Mating was eliminated in areas treated at the same dosage when males and females were initially deployed 1 m apart but on separate trees.
4 This suggests that mating disruption may not be an effective tactic for gypsy moth eradication in cases where the infestation is concentrated on a small number of trees and males and females are in close proximity in space and time.  相似文献

Although cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the captive chimpanzee population, little is known about the prevalence and etiology of heart disease in this species. We reviewed the physical exam records of 265 common chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) for electrocardiogram abnormalities. During the 24-mo period reviewed (August 2003 through August 2005), 34 animals were diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmias consisting of ventricular arrhythmias, supraventricular arrhythmias, conduction disturbances, mixed arrhythmias, and bradycardia. The incidence of cardiac arrhythmia was significantly higher in male animals, chimpanzees 20 to 39 y old, and those with structural heart disease. Incidence of cardiac arrhythmia was not significantly higher in animals with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or chronic viral infections. During the retrospective period, 7 animals with cardiac arrhythmias died or were euthanized. Mortality was significantly higher in animals with ventricular arrhythmias compared with those without ventricular arrhythmias. We conclude that in the common chimpanzee, age, male gender, and structural heart disease are risk factors for developing cardiac arrhythmias and that ventricular arrhythmias are risk factors for mortality.  相似文献

We studied the prevalence and potential subclinical effects of infestation by Trichomonas gallinae in 91 hunter-harvested Common Wood Pigeons Columba palumbus from northern ( n  = 30) and southern ( n  = 61) Spain during the winter period. All animals were measured, sexed, aged, necropsied and their organs were weighed. Infestation with T. gallinae was diagnosed using three different methods: direct inspection for the presence of lesions, direct microscopic observation and culture. Of the sampled birds, 34.2% were positive for the presence of T. gallinae . Prevalence was significantly higher in adult Wood Pigeons than in the juvenile group, and prevalence was significantly lower in birds sampled from the north. No significant differences in prevalence were found between males and females. Culture was significantly more sensitive than the other methods of diagnosis. Parasitized birds were in poorer body condition, as revealed by their lower body mass and fat reserves. No significant variation could be detected in heart or spleen weight between parasitized and healthy birds. However, juvenile Wood Pigeons in which T. gallinae was detected had a significantly larger bursa of Fabricius. Variations in the prevalence of T. gallinae in Wood Pigeons could be related to migration as well as increased exposure through shared feed and water where these are artificially provided. We also discuss the potential effect of T. gallinae on body condition and the eventual risk for endangered predators through increased exposure to infected prey.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. For insect herbivores the quality of the larval host plant is a key determinant of their fitness. Only little attention, however, has been given to the effects of plants on mating success of males and its consequence for the reproductive output of their mates. In addition, almost all the studies that have investigated the influence of host plants on herbivore fitness components have been done in the laboratory, and less is known of these effects in natural conditions.
2. Using the phytophagous European grapevine moth ( Lobesia botrana Den. & Schiff., Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), we tested the influence of grape cultivars as larval food on the probability of acquiring a mate for both sexes, and on the reproductive output of females and males.
3. Results from this study stress the importance of larval host plants on the reproductive success of both sexes. Larval diet differentially affected mating success and reproductive output of male and female moths. Fecundity, egg size, and egg hatchability were significantly different when larvae were fed on particular grape cultivars.
4. A given cultivar that is of poor quality for females is generally also of poor quality for males. A cultivar, however, could be suitable for females but not for males and vice-versa. Apparently, the nutrients required for adult reproduction are not necessarily the same for males and females.
5. The important conclusion from this study is that evaluating the differential effect of host-plant species on traits associated with reproductive success of herbivores requires that the effects on both sexes be taken into account.  相似文献

Background:  Helicobacter pylori infection causes chronic gastric inflammation and intestinal metaplasia (IM), related with deregulation of Wnt pathway and over-expressions of COX-2, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP), and tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinase (TIMP). We thus test the host genomic predispositions related to the risk of IM after H. pylori infection.
Methods:  We enrolled 296 H. pylori -infected patients to provide gastric biopsies for histology and genomic DNA for genotypes of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including APC , COX-2 , IL-1B , IL-1RN , IL-10 , MMP-2 , MMP-9 , TIMP-1 , and TIMP-2 determined by sequence specific oligonucleotide probe, sequence specific primers, restriction fragment length polymorphism, or real-time polymerase chain reaction.
Results:  There was no association between the presence of IM and SNPs in APC , COX-2 , IL-1B , IL-1RN , IL-10 , MMP-2 , and TIMP-2 . The risk of IM was increased up to 2.29-folds in males with TIMP-1 372 C, and 3.03-fold in females with T carrier ( p  < .05). The combination genotype of MMP-9 − 1562/ TIMP-1 372 as CC/C and CT/T in males had a 4.5-fold increased risk of IM, as compared to CC/T ( p  < .05). Females with such combination genotype as CC/T-carrier had a 3-fold risk of IM than males with CC/T ( p  < .05). In contrast, males' combination genotype as CC/C had a 3-fold risk of IM than females with CC/CC ( p =  .05).
Conclusions:  The host MMP-9 − 1562/ TIMP-1 372 SNPs had gender differences in the risk of IM after H. pylori infection, and could possibly serve as a host factor to identify the risk group harboring gastric precancerous changes after H. pylori infection.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Immune defence imposes fitness costs as well as benefits, so organisms are expected to optimise, not maximise, their immune responses. This should result in variation in immune responses under varying environmental conditions.
2. Males and females are expected to exhibit different immune responses because life-history differences between the sexes affect optimal immune response. These life-history differences should usually result in a greater female, than male, immune defence. In this study, intra- and inter-sexual variation in one component of immune defence, the encapsulation response, in cabbage white butterflies ( Pieris rapae L.), was examined.
3. Encapsulation decreased with increasing age and in response to reduced diet quality.
4. Contrary to predictions, males generally had greater immune responses than females, although this pattern varied with age.
5. These patterns of inter- and intra-sexual variation in encapsulation may result from resource-based trade-offs with components of reproductive effort and/or because of sexual dimorphism in melanin-based wing patterns.  相似文献

The G allele of the FOXO3 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs2802292 exhibits a consistently replicated genetic association with longevity in multiple populations worldwide. The aims of this study were to quantify the mortality risk for the longevity‐associated genotype and to discover the particular cause(s) of death associated with this allele in older Americans of diverse ancestry. It involved a 17‐year prospective cohort study of 3584 older American men of Japanese ancestry from the Honolulu Heart Program cohort, followed by a 17‐year prospective replication study of 1595 white and 1056 black elderly individuals from the Health Aging and Body Composition cohort. The relation between FOXO3 genotype and cause‐specific mortality was ascertained for major causes of death including coronary heart disease (CHD), cancer, and stroke. Age‐adjusted and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to compute hazard ratios (HRs) for all‐cause and cause‐specific mortality. We found G allele carriers had a combined (Japanese, white, and black populations) risk reduction of 10% for total (all‐cause) mortality (HR = 0.90; 95% CI, 0.84–0.95; = 0.001). This effect size was consistent across populations and mostly contributed by 26% lower risk for CHD death (HR = 0.74; 95% CI, 0.64–0.86; P = 0.00004). No other causes of death made a significant contribution to the survival advantage for G allele carriers. In conclusion, at older age, there is a large risk reduction in mortality for G allele carriers, mostly due to lower CHD mortality. The findings support further research on FOXO3 and FoxO3 protein as potential targets for therapeutic intervention in aging‐related diseases, particularly cardiovascular disease.  相似文献

Background: Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are classified as neoplasms of uncertain or unknown behavior in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) Version 10 and can contribute to risk of death from complications (especially thrombosis). Methods: U.S age-standardized death rates using ICD-Version 10 codes relevant to classical MPN (i.e., polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, and “chronic myeloproliferative disease”) were examined for 1999–2006. The underlying cause of death and also all causes (“multiple causes” or “mentions”) coded on death certificates were considered. Trends were assessed by using percentage change (PC) in rate between 1999 and 2006, and annual percentage change (APC) estimated from linear regression. Results: The decline in death rates was large for MPN, whether based only the underlying cause (PC = ?19.7%, APC = ?3.4%) or on the substantially higher rates based on any cause (PC = ?24.1%, APC = ?3.8%), and was consistent by gender and age group (<65 and 65+ years). For deaths with MPN coded as other than the underlying cause, cardiovascular diseases were the most common underlying cause and the ASR for these deaths declined substantially (PC = ?40.0%). Conclusions: Use of the underlying cause of death in surveillance will considerably underestimate MPN-related mortality rates in the population. Studies are needed on treatment in random samples of MPN patients from population-based cancer registries. Continued surveillance of MPN-related mortality rates in the population is needed in view of recent attempts (including the use of aspirin) to control cardiovascular complications of MPN.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Reproductive cooperation occurs in diverse taxa and a defining characteristic of these social systems is how reproduction is shared. Both male and female burying beetles ( Nicrophorus spp.) facultatively form associations to bury a carcass and rear a single brood, making burying beetles a model system for testing skew theory.
2. In this study, 50% of 40–45 g carcasses and 75% of 55–60 g ones were buried by more than one male and/or female Nicrophorus tomentosus .
3. Females were significantly more likely to cooperate on 55–60 g carcasses than on 40–45 g ones.
4. Analysis of parentage of 13 broods using microsatellite loci as genetic markers showed that maternity analysis of only 2% of the young excluded all females captured leaving the brood chamber after burial. Males previously mated with resident females or displaced by resident males fathered 7% of the young.
5. The male and female remaining the longest were usually the parents of the most offspring, and reproductively dominant individuals also tended to be the largest.
6. Although all but two or three individuals that helped to bury the carcass produced some offspring, reproduction was often not shared equitably. Reproduction of females was significantly skewed on six of nine 40–45 g carcasses but shared fairly equitably on all three 55–60 g ones. Reproduction was skewed among males on 7 of 10 broods.
7. Both males and females relinquished a greater proportion of the brood as the days of assistance from all consexuals increased.  相似文献
