Although there is evidence for reduced fertility in Andean and Himalayan populations at higher altitudes, factors other than hypoxia may be primarily responsible. A valuable approach in the investigation of these fertility determinants is the use of salivary steroid assays. However, coca-leaf chewing—a ubiquitous practice among high altitude Andean populations—has negative consequences for the accurate measurement of ovarian steroids. This report evaluates the effects of coca-leaf chewing on assays of salivary progesterone. Study participants include naive and habitual users of coca leaf from La Paz and El Alto, Bolivia. Approximately 300 saliva samples were collected immediately before, during, and after coca-leaf chewing. The series includes samples with and without the alkaloid enhancer typically used by coca-leaf chewers. Coca chewing produces false salivary progesterone values that mimic luteal phase values. On the basis of this study, an appropriate protocol is developed for the collection of salivary samples in coca-leaf chewing populations. These results verify the feasibility of salivary assays, even for very difficult field conditions, and highlight the necessity of establishing suitable collection procedures before full field implementation of saliva sampling. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Betel nut chewing has been reported to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and all‐cause mortality. The reason is unclear. In this study, we investigated the association between betel nut chewing and general obesity (BMI ≥25 kg/m2) and central obesity (waist circumference (WC) ≥90 cm). A total of 1,049 male subjects, aged ≥40 years, were recruited from Taichung city in Taiwan in 2004. The relationships between betel nut chewing and general and central obesity were studied by multiple linear and logistic regression analyses. The prevalence of current and former betel nut chewing was 7.0 and 10.5% in our male Taiwanese cohort. Current/former betel nut chewers had a higher prevalence of general and central obesity when compared with individuals who had never chewed betel nut. Adjusted for age, diabetes, hypertension, lipids, smoking, alcohol drinking, physical activity, income, and education level, the odds ratios (ORs; 95% confidence intervals) of general and central obesity among the lower consumption of betel nut chewers were 1.78 (1.07, 2.96) and 1.19 (0.70, 2.02), respectively, compared to 2.01 (1.18, 3.41) and 1.89 (1.10, 3.23), respectively, among higher consumption chewers compared to individuals who had never chewed betel nut. The increasing ORs of general and central obesity with higher betel nut consumption revealed dose–response effects. Using multiple linear regression analyses, after adjusting for potential confounders, betel nut consumption was statistically significantly associated with BMI and WC. In conclusion, betel nut chewing was independently associated with general and central obesity in Taiwanese men. Dose–response effects of the association between betel nut consumption and general obesity as well as central obesity were found.  相似文献

BackgroundAreca (betel) nut is considered a Group 1 human carcinogen shown to be associated with other chronic diseases in addition to cancer. This paper describes the areca (betel) nut chewing trend in Guam, and health behaviors of chewers in Guam and Saipan.MethodsThe areca (betel) nut module in the Guam Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey was used to calculate the 5-year (2011–2015) chewing trend. To assess the association between areca (betel) nut chewing and health risks in the Mariana Islands, a cross-section of 300 chewers, ≥18 years old, were recruited from households in Guam and Saipan. Self-reported socio-demographics, oral health behaviors, chronic disease status, diet, and physical activity were collected. Anthropometry was measured. Only areca (betel) nut-specific and demographic information were collected from youth chewers in the household.ResultsThe 5-year areca (betel) nut chewing prevalence in Guam was 11% and increased among Non-Chamorros, primarily other Micronesians, from 2011 (7%) to 2015 (13%). In the household survey, most adult chewers (46%) preferred areca nut with betel leaf, slaked lime, and tobacco. Most youth chewers (48%) preferred areca nut only. Common adult chronic conditions included diabetes (14%), hypertension (26%), and obesity (58%).ConclusionThe 5-year areca (betel) nut chewing prevalence in Guam is comparable to the world estimate (10–20%), though rising among Non-Chamorros. Adult and youth chewers may be at an increased risk for oral cancer. Adult chewers have an increased risk of other chronic health conditions. Cancer prevention and intervention strategies should incorporate all aspects of health.  相似文献

BackgroundChewing areca (betel) nut has been deemed carcinogenic. The practice has become a public health concern in Micronesia. The Children's Healthy Living (CHL) Program included an areca (betel) nut questionnaire in a survey of household characteristics in the Freely Associated States (FAS). This paper describes areca (betel) nut chewing practices of adults and the health behaviors of their children.MethodsA cross-section of 1200 children (2–8 year-olds) and their caregivers in Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Republic of Palau, Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), and Yap were recruited. Socio-demographics, adult areca (betel) nut chewing practices, and other health behaviors of children and adults were assessed. Child anthropometric measurements were collected to estimate weight status.ResultsThe FAS areca (betel) nut chewing prevalence was 42%, ranging from 3% (RMI) to 94% (Yap). Among chewers, 84% added tobacco, 97% added slaked lime, 85% added betel leaf, and 24% mixed the components with alcohol. Among FAS children, 95% practiced daily teeth-brushing and 53% visited the dentist annually. Compared to non-chewing households, areca (betel) nut chewing households were more likely to have very young children enrolled, more highly educated adults, and members that used tobacco and alcohol.ConclusionThe FAS areca (betel) nut chewing prevalence (42%) is above the world prevalence of 10–20%, with wide variability across the islands. The oral health findings in this study may inform future oral cancer prevention programs or policies. Regular monitoring of areca (betel) nut use is needed to measure the impact of such programs or policies.  相似文献

The genotoxicity of plant phenolics, including pyrogallol, gallic acid, resorcinol and catechin, and a water extract and tannin fraction of betel nut (Areca catechu) was examined at pH levels ranging from 5 to 10. Strain D7 of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used since the cells can withstand a wide range of pH levels without any loss of viability. At alkaline pH ranges, the examined phenolics and betel nut extracts induced mitotic conversion, whereas they lacked this capacity at acid pH levels. This phenomenon may be due to the rapid autoxidation of phenolics under alkaline conditions, which leads to the generation of H2O2 and free radicals. The results indicate that plant phenolics may pose a genotoxic hazard during chewing of lime-containing betel quid and tobacco which causes the salivary pH to rise above 8.  相似文献

Betel chewing has been claimed to produce a sense of well-being, euphoria, heightened alertness, sweating, salivation, a hot sensation in the body and increased capacity to work. Betel chewing also leads to habituation, addiction and withdrawal. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects remain poorly understood. Arecoline, the major alkaloid of Areca nut, has been extensively studied, and several effects of betel chewing are thought to be related to the actions of this parasympathomimetic constituent. However, betel chewing may produce complex reactions and interactions. In the presence of lime, arecoline and guvacoline in Areca nut are hydrolyzed into arecaidine and guvacine, respectively, which are strong inhibitors of GABA uptake. Piper betle flower or leaf contains aromatic phenolic compounds which have been found to stimulate the release of catecholamines in vitro. Thus, betel chewing may affect parasympathetic, GABAnergic and sympathetic functions. Betel chewing produces an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, sweating and body temperature. In addition, EEG shows widespread cortical desynchronization indicating a state of arousal. In autonomic function tests, both the sympathetic skin response and RR interval variation are affected. Betel chewing also increases plasma concentrations of norepinephrine and epinephrine. These results suggest that betel chewing mainly affects the central and autonomic nervous systems. Future studies should investigate both the acute and chronic effects of betel chewing. Such studies may further elucidate the psychoactive mechanisms responsible for the undiminished popularity of betel chewing since antiquity.  相似文献

Areca nut is the fourth most widely used addictive and psychoactive substance consumed by approximately 10% of the world’s population. The use of areca nut is estimated to account for up to 50% of oral cancer in the low-income, and middle-income countries. In the present study, the effect of betel nut chewing on saliva proteomics was investigated by using mass spectrometry. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry was used to generate a profile of the peptides in betel nut consumers and control group. We found 13 peptide peaks which were significantly altered (p?<?0.05) in the betel nut addicts when compared with the control group. These significant peptides signals were corresponding to protein cystatin SN (CST1), cystatin S (CST4), alpha 2 macroglobulin (A2M), complement C3 (C3), apolipoprotein E (APOE), serum albumin (ALB), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), deleted in malignant brain tumor protein 1 (DMBT1), zinc-alpha-2-glycoprotein (ZAG), and protein S100A8. The correlation analysis of significant peptides intensities with the history of betel nut chewing was also performed. The peptides of CST1 and CST4 showed negative correlation, whereas the peptides of the MMP-9, DMBT1, APOE, and C3 showed positive correlation with significant differences. STRING analysis of these proteins revealed that most of these proteins are interacting with each other. The present study identifies a number of proteins in a significantly different abundance in the betel nut consumers group. Some of these proteins are the reported biomarkers of several oral malignancies, which implies that the usage of betel nut could lead to inflammation, and development of oral cancer.

According to several population-based studies, betel nut chewing is associated with metabolic syndrome and diabetes in British South Asians and Taiwanese. However, the underlying molecular mechanism is not yet clear. Arecoline is an alkaloid-type natural product found in betel nuts. Our aim was to clarify the influence of betel nut extract and arecoline on lipid accumulation and insulin signaling in adipocytes. We found that betel nut extract and arecoline blocked lipid storage in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The possible mechanism may function by inhibiting the expression of the insulin receptor, glucose transporter-4, fatty acid synthase, and the lipid droplet proteins perilipin and adipophilin. In addition, betel nut extract and arecoline increased the basal level of IRS-1 serine307 phosphorylation and decreased insulin-stimulated IRS-1 tyrosine, Akt, and PI3 kinase phosphorylation. In conclusion, betel nut extract and arecoline have diabetogenic potential on adipocytes that may result in insulin resistance and diabetes at least in part via the obstruction of insulin signaling and the blockage of lipid storage.  相似文献

Equimolar amounts (36.8 nmol) of estradiol and the two catecholestrogens (CE's) 4-hydroxyestradiol (4-OHE2) and 2-hydroxyestradiol (2-OHE2) were injected subcutaneously to ovariectomized adult rats. Serum levels of both LH and FSH were determined at short-term intervals. Moreover, serum levels of the administered steroids and their main free and conjugated metabolites were monitored. Serum levels of the injected steroids reached peak values at different time points: estradiol between 60 and 240 min, CE's between 30 and 60 min. Peak height also differed significantly: with estradiol highest (1500 pg/ml), followed by 4-OHE2 (540 pg/ml) and then 2-OHE2 (135 pg/ml) (ratio 11:4:1). This mirrored the different MCR's of the steroids: CE's, especially 2-OHE2, were rapidly and extensively methylated and/or - to a lesser degree - conjugated. Estradiol remained mainly unchanged. LH-serum levels in steroid treated animals showed - irrespective of the steroid used - a uniform reaction pattern: they were significantly depressed 60 to 240 min after injection and - with the exception of estradiol treated rats - reached pretreatment levels again 480 min after injection. Ultra-short (15 min) effects were not observed. FSH serum levels in CE treated animals were not significantly altered, only E2 application led to a significant but small decrease in FSH levels 240 and 480 min after its injection. In conclusion, neither the effect of 4-OHE2 nor that of 2-OHE2 corresponded to the different MCR's or the MCR-corrected affinities for the classical estrogen receptor. A non-genomic mechanism may be responsible for this impaired effect of CE's.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to use the micronuclei from exfoliated buccal mucosal cells to investigate the clastogenic effects of areca quid chewing and cigarette smoking, as well as the interaction between the two. The study population was selected from residents of seven villages recruited for a community-cohort study. A total of 141 subjects were recruited based on the regular consumption of cigarettes and betel quid. Salient personal characteristics were collected from interview using a specially designed questionnaire. Micronuclei were scored on Feulgen/fast green-stained smear preparations of exfoliated cells obtained by scraping the surface of the buccal mucosa. There was no significant interaction between the chewing of betel nut and cigarette smoking. Heavy smoking was positively associated with MN frequency, with areca quid chewing negatively associated. A significant positive trend was demonstrated for the relationship between MN frequency and either daily cigarette consumption or cumulative smoking pack-years. By contrast, negative trends were demonstrated for the analogous relationships with areca quid chewing. These results indicate that heavy smoking, but not areca quid chewing, increases MN formation. These findings suggest that the carcinogenesis of the oral cancers induced by areca quid chewing in Taiwan may be through a pathway other than genotoxicity.  相似文献

In this investigation, we report the presence of cholinomimetic and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory constituents in betel nut, the most commonly used drug in the world after tobacco, ethanol and caffeine. The crude extract of betel nuts or Areca catechu (Ac.Cr) caused a dose-dependent (0.3-300 microg/mL) spasmogenic effect in the isolated rabbit jejunum. The spasmogenic effect was blocked by atropine, similar to that of acetylcholine (ACh), suggestive of muscarinic receptor mediated effect. Both the extract (0.3-10 microg/mL) and physostigmine (0.1-3.0 microM) potentiated the effect of a fixed dose of ACh (10 microM) in a dose-dependent fashion, suggesting acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory effect. This effect was confirmed in the in vitro assay where both the crude extract (1-100 microg/mL) and physostigmine inhibited the enzyme. In the in vivo model of gastrointestinal transit, Ac.Cr (10-30 mg/kg) enhanced the travel of charcoal meal and also exhibited a laxative effect in mice. The plant extract was subjected to activity-directed fractionation and all resultant fractions showed atropine-sensitive spasmogenicity in rabbit jejunum and also AChE inhibitory effect at doses similar to that for the parent crude extract, the ethyl acetate fraction being slightly less potent. Some of the known constituents of betel nut, including arecoline, were tested for the possible inhibitory effect on AChE, none were found active. The study provides first evidence for the presence of AChE inhibitory constituents in betel nut, though additional direct muscarinic stimulatory effect cannot be ruled out and this study provides sound scientific basis for some of the folkloric uses associated with betel nut chewing.  相似文献

There are over 600 million people worldwide covering Asian and Oceanic countries including India have the habit of chewing areca nut as masticator in different forms. Arecoline (C(8)H(13)NO(2)) has been reported as one of the abundant constituents of areca nut. A good number of scientific publications have made Arecoline responsible for oral cancer. Based on observation from clinical situation in North East India, one of the most betel quid chewing region of the country, we suspected a link between consumption of areca nut and Cerebro Vascular Disease like stroke. Therefore, we considered Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) receptor as target and Arecoline as ligand and studied ligand -target interaction using computational tools. Also we considered High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) receptor as another target to see if Arecoline has any binding potential with it over and above LDL receptor. Docking result indicated that Arecoline and Cholesterol both, have affinity towards extracellular domain of Human LDL receptor but affinity of Arecoline is much higher (-12.3560.) than that of Cholesterol(-0.1810). Docking of Arecoline and 1, 2-Hexyl-1- cyclopentanone thiosemicarbazone (thiosemicarbazone) with Bovine HDL receptor showed that Arecoline also has the potential (Score, -6.2690Kcal/Mol) to block HDL receptor though its potential is less than that (score, -10.0509 Kcal/Mol) of control (thiosemicarbazone). We, therefore, suggest that by inhibiting endocytosis of LDL cholesterol because of blocking LDL receptor function and also by preventing LDL cholesterol uptake by liver from blood because of interference with HDL receptor, Arecoline may contribute to atherosclerosis. The study therefore, indicates a positive correlation between chewing of betel quid and Cerebro Vascular Disease.  相似文献

Aim

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to critically appraised data from comparable studies leading to quantitative assessment of any independent association between use of oral smokeless tobacco in any form, of betel quid without tobacco and of areca nut with incidence of oral cancer in South Asia and the Pacific.

Methods

Studies (case control and/or cohort) were identified by searching Pub Med, CINAHL and Cochrane databases through June 2013 using the keywords oral cancer: chewing tobacco; smokeless tobacco; betel quid; betel quid without tobacco; areca nut; Asia, the Pacific and the reference lists of retrieved articles. A random effects model was used to compute adjusted summary ORRE for the main effect of these habits along with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals. To quantify the impact of between-study heterogeneity on adjusted main-effect summary ORRE, Higgins'' H and I2 statistics along with their 95% uncertainty intervals were used. Funnel plots and Egger''s test were used to evaluate publication bias.

Results

Meta-analysis of fifteen case–control studies (4,553 cases; 8,632 controls) and four cohort studies (15,342) which met our inclusion criteria showed that chewing tobacco is significantly and independently associated with an increased risk of squamous-cell carcinoma of the oral cavity (adjusted main-effect summary for case- control studies ORRE = 7.46; 95% CI = 5.86–9.50, P<0.001), (adjusted main-effect summary for cohort studies RR = 5.48; 95% CI = 2.56–11.71, P<0.001). Furthermore, meta-analysis of fifteen case control studies (4,648 cases; 7,847 controls) has shown betel quid without tobacco to have an independent positive association with oral cancer, with OR = 2.82 (95% CI = 2.35–3.40, P<0.001). This is presumably due to the carcinogenicity of areca nut. There was no significant publication bias.

Conclusion

There is convincing evidence that smokeless (aka chewing) tobacco, often used as a component of betel quid, and betel quid without tobacco, are both strong and independent risk factors for oral cancer in these populations. However, studies with better separation of the types of tobacco and the ways in which it is used, and studies with sufficient power to quantify dose-response relationships are still needed.  相似文献

Background  

Approximately 600 million people chew Betel nut, making this practice the fourth most popular oral habit in the world. Arecoline, the major alkaloid present in betel nut is one of the causative agents for precancerous lesions and several cancers of mouth among those who chew betel nut. Arecoline can be detected in the human embryonic tissue and is correlated to low birth weight of newborns whose mothers chew betel nut during pregnancy, suggesting that arecoline can induce many systemic effects. However, few reports exist as to the effects of arecoline in human tissues other than oral cancer cell lines. Furthermore, in any system, virtually nothing is known about the cellular effects of arecoline treatment on membrane associated signaling components of human cancer cells.  相似文献

目的:本论文采用了含羧甲基壳聚糖的口香糖,咀嚼这种口香糖的机械效果加速了其对口腔细菌的抑制作用,还比较口腔嗽洗液和咀嚼口香糖的抗菌效果,证明了通过咀嚼这种口香糖加速了唾液的分泌.方法:从青岛大学口腔科的老师和学生中选取了12名健康的受试者.在测试前取受试者的唾液测试细菌含量.在测试口香糖的试验中,受试者咀嚼5分钟口香糖然后休息5分钟.在测试口腔嗽洗液时,受试者用10ml嗽洗液漱口30秒后,休息9分30秒.同一天中这些测试步骤在50分钟内连续不断的进行了5次.5次测试后分别在0、30和60min收集被试者的唾液测试细菌含量.在测试唾液分泌的试验中,受试者每天咀嚼三次口香糖持续两天.结果:与使用口腔嗽洗液相比,咀嚼含羧甲基壳聚糖口香糖的受试者,在三个取样时间内口腔细菌的含量基本都明显减少,但是在60分钟的取样时间结果有点差异.咀嚼含羧甲基壳聚糖的口香糖明显提高了唾液的分泌量.结论:咀嚼含羧甲基壳聚糖的口香糖具有明显的抗菌效果.目前的研究结果强有力的证明了:使用像壳聚糖以及其衍生物这样的天然物质,对我们的口腔健康以及生活质量都有很大的帮助.  相似文献

Although an estimated 10% to 25% of the world''s population chews betel quid, this practice is virtually unknown in the United States. Health care professionals coming into contact with immigrants and refugees from India, New Guinea, and Southeast Asia will increasingly notice this habit. Possible hazards associated with the chewing of the various ingredients of the quid include oral cancer and an addictive potential as strong as for cigarettes. We surveyed a group of Cambodian refugee women who are addicted to betel nut and its associated components. Participant-directed interviews uncovered some of the cultural meanings surrounding the ritual of preparing and using the betel quid and the role of culture in the beliefs and behaviors related to chemical addiction.  相似文献

Aqueous, acetic acid, hydrochloric acid and ethanol extracts of betel nut (Areca catechu L.) have been found to induce unscheduled DNA synthesis in Hep 2 cells obtained from human larynx carcinoma, in vitro. Different concentrations of extracts of betel nut induced dose-dependent unscheduled DNA synthesis in Hep 2 cells. Together with the viability of the Hep 2 cells, our results indicate that the aqueous and acetic acid extracts of betel nut induce relatively more unscheduled DNA synthesis than the hydrochloric acid and ethanol extracts and arecoline. The carcinogenic potency of raw and unprocessed betel nut of North-East India used in this study is discussed.  相似文献

This study was designed to evaluate whether traditional plasma hormone determinations can be adequately replaced by measurements of salivary hormones. Eleven young sportswomen with menstrual irregularities attributed to strenuous physical exercise participated in this study. Mean body weight expressed as a percentage of ideal body weight was 92%, SD 4%. Their mean weekly training distance was 35 km, SD 15. Basal plasma endocrinological measurements revealed a hypo-oestrogenic status (mean plasma oestradiol values: 22 pg.ml-1, SD 8.8), and a deficient luteal phase (mean plasma progesterone: 2.9 ng.ml-1, SD 2.1). Pre-exercise salivary sex steroids were low. Salivary progesterone levels were 39.3 pg.ml-1, SD 9.5 (normal ranges in saliva: 25-60 pg.ml-1), salivary oestrone (E1) was 12.2 pg.ml-1, SD 2.3 (normal ranges in saliva: 7.5-25 pg.ml-1), and salivary oestradiol (E2) less than 1.9 pg.ml-1, SD 1.1 (normally 1.0-10.0 pg.ml-1). After a 21-km run, all salivary steroids appeared to increase. Mean salivary testosterone levels increased by 15.2% and salivary progesterone by 14.8%. Mean salivary oestrogens also increased (E1: +13.9%; E2: +21.1%). These findings confirm the results of earlier studies which found higher post-exercise plasma sex steroid levels. Since salivary measurements are believed to reflect non-protein-bound, thus free steroid levels, the results obtained by these techniques may provide a more realistic picture of the hormonal effects of physical exercise. In future, more accurate, cost-effective and easier techniques for salivary measurements may offer additional advantages.  相似文献

Betel quid use and abuse is wide spread in Asia but the physiological basis of intoxication and addiction are unknown. In subjects naïve to the habit of betel quid intoxication, the psychological and physiological profile of intoxication has never been reported. We compared the effect of chewing gum or chewing betel quid, and subsequent betel quid intoxication, on psychological assessment, prospective time interval estimation, numerical and character digit span, computerized 2 choice tests and mental tasks such as reading and mathematics with concurrent monitoring of ECG, EEG and face temperature in healthy, non-sleep deprived, male subjects naïve to the habit of chewing betel quid. Betel quid intoxication, dose dependently induced tachycardia (max 30 bpm) and elevated face temperature (0.7°C) (P<0.001) above the effects observed in response to chewing gum (max 12 bpm and 0.3°C) in 12 subjects. Gross behavioral indices of working memory such as numerical or character digit span in 8 subjects, or simple visual-motor performance such as reaction speed or accuracy in a two choice scenario in 8 subjects were not affected by betel quid intoxication. Betel quid intoxication strongly influenced the psychological aspects of perception such as slowing of the prospective perception of passage of a 1 minute time interval in 8 subjects (P<0.05) and perceived increased arousal (P<0.01) and perceived decreased ability to think (P<0.05) in 31 subjects. The EEG spectral profile recorded from mental states associated with open and closed eyes, and mental tasks such as reading and eyes closed mental arithmetic were significantly modified (P<0.05) relative to chewing gum by betel quid intoxication in 10 subjects. Accumulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations in human tissues has been associated with intrinsic aging and environmental insult. Recently, mtDNA mutations have been detected in various tumors, including head and neck tumors. However, the factors affecting the occurrence and accumulation of mtDNA deletions in tumor tissues are poorly understood. In Taiwan, betel quid chewing is a major risk factor for oral cancer. Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques, we examined large-scale deletions of mtDNA in 53 pairs of tumor and non-tumor oral tissues from the patients with or without betel quid chewing history. The results revealed that irrespective of the history of betel quid chewing, the incidences of the 4977bp deletion and other deletions of mtDNA were lower in the tumor portion as compared with the non-tumor portion. The average proportions of the 4977bp deleted mtDNA in the tumor tissues of the betel quid chewers and non-betel quid chewers were 13- and 5-fold, respectively, lower than those in the corresponding non-tumor tissues. Moreover, the average proportion of 4977bp deleted mtDNA was significantly higher (P<0.05) in the non-tumor oral tissues of the patients with betel quid chewing history than that of the patients without the history of betel quid chewing. These results suggest that betel quid chewing may increase mtDNA mutation in human oral tissues and that accumulation of mtDNA deletions and subsequent cytoplasmic segregation of these mutations during cell division could be an important contributor to the early phase of oral carcinogenesis.  相似文献
