Variations of protein concentrations in the haemolymph, hepatopancreas and ovaries were studied during the ovarian maturation of the shrimp Penaeus schmitti. The main variations observed during this physiological process are the increase of protein and the decrease of water contents in the ovary, more pronounced at the first stages of gonadosomatic index (GSI:0-4). During ovarian maturation, water content of the ovaries and hepatopancreas decrease from 10.7 and 3.9% respectively. In relative values, protein content increases from about 40.0% in the ovary, 47.5% in the haemolymph and 15.4% in the hepatopancreas. In absolute values, the protein concentrations of the hepatopancreas showed no significant variation. In the opposite, ovary protein content is 14.7 fold higher at the end than the early stages of vitellogenesis. Relations between haemolymph, hepatopancreas and ovary with eventual transfers of protein material are discussed.  相似文献

Grapsoid crabs are best known from the marine intertidal and supratidal. However, some species also inhabit shallow subtidal and freshwater habitats. In the tropics and subtropics, their distribution even includes mountain streams and tree tops. At present, the Grapsoidea consists of the families Grapsidae, Gecarcinidae, and Mictyridae, the first being subdivided into four subfamilies (Grapsinae, Plagusiinae, Sesarminae, and Varuninae). To help resolve phylogenetic relationships among these highly adaptive crabs, portions of the mitochondrial genome corresponding to the 16S rRNA gene were sequenced for all grapsoid genera occurring in America. The resulting phylogeny confirms most of the present grapsid subfamilies but suggests reclassification of some of the genera and recognition of new taxonomic units. The two American gecarcinid genera might not represent a sister group to the Grapsidae but rather appear to have evolved within the latter. Colonization of inland habitats evolved in several lineages of the grapsoids, resulting in various forms of nonmarine life and different degrees of independence from the sea.  相似文献

Hepatopancreal tissue of the crab Ucides cordatus was investigated by light and electron microscopy. The observed epithelial cells were: E-cells (embryonic), located in the distal portion of the hepatopancreal tubules, R-cells (resorptive) F-cells (fibrillar) and B-cells (blister or secretory), found in its intermediate and proximal regions. Two types of electron-dense granules (EDGs) were found frequently in the cells of the proximal portion of the hepatopancreal tubule. Both types of EDGs presented alternating concentric electron-dense and electron-lucent layers. In order to better characterize these granules, energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA) and glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) cytochemistry were performed. One type of spherical granule was seen inside vacuoles surrounded by an association of myelin-like membranes as well as some small membrane-bound vesicles. This type of granule neither presented detectable Ca and P on EDXA spectra nor G6Pase cytochemical reaction products. The second type of granule had O, P and Ca characteristic peaks. G6Pase cytochemical products were observed inside these structures and showed that this mineralized type was surrounded by endoplasmic reticulum membranes. This result suggests that in U. cordatus the endoplasmic reticulum is associated with the genesis of mineralized EDGs. While amorphous mineral granules may be associated with a storage of Ca and P for the new carapace synthesis, EDGs covered by the non-mineralized spherical multi-layered membranes may be associated with late endosomes. No specific secretory pathway however was determined for the EDGs at the epithelial proximal portion.  相似文献

Quantitative and qualitative variations of free-amino-acids contents (FAA) of ovaries, hepatopancreas and haemolymph have been studied in the course of ovarian maturation in Penaeus schmitti. In the ovary, FAA content, expressed as microM/g ovary fresh weight, decreases from 56.2 to 23.6 microM between gonadosomatic index (GSI) 0.8 and GSI 7.1. There is an increase of hepatopancreas FAA content of 33.4% till GSI 4. Haemolymph FAA content increases from 0.32 to 1.76 microM/ml, with maximal values of 3.74 microM/ml when GSI are between 3 and 4. FAA content of ovaries, expressed as microM/g of animal, is 3.2 fold higher at the end of maturation, with a main increase in the first stages of ovogenesis. Maturation process has a quantitative effect on all FAA, but, on a qualitative point of view, it concerns mainly lysine, arginine and glycine. The main variations of AA composition (expressed as percentage of total FAA) are observed in haemolymph.  相似文献

An assessment of the global freshwater crab diversity is presented. A total of 1,476 species in 14 families are currently known from all zoogeographical regions (except Antarctica), including 1,306 species in eight exclusively freshwater families (Pseudothelphusidae, Trichodactylidae, Potamonautidae, Deckeniidae, Platythelphusidae, Potamidae, Gecarcinucidae and Parathelphusidae). Estimates of true freshwater crab diversity including likely numbers of undescribed taxa suggest that the field remains largely in a “discovery” phase. Main ideas on the origins, diversification, and phylogeny of true freshwater crabs are briefly discussed. The economic importance of freshwater crabs is also highlighted. Guest editors: E. V. The spider crabs Inachus dorsettensis (Pennant) and Hyas coarctatus Leach are widespread in subtidal areas of muddy sand or gravel around western Europe. Both species have a life cycle with an obligatory planktonic larval phase of several weeks, which might be expected to cause widespread larval dispersal and consequent genetic homogeneity over considerable distances. However, earlier work on both taxa has indicated differences in growth pattern between populations separated by tens of kilometres. This study was undertaken to determine whether these differences were purely environmental or whether, despite the short distances involved, differences may have a genetic basis. A study of gene frequencies, as indicated by allozymes in samples of adults collected off the Isle of Man (northern Irish Sea), indicates significant genetic differentiation between populations over a geographical distance of only about 40 km in both Inachus dorsettensis ( = 0.086 ± 0.048) and Hyas coarctatus ( = 0.023 ± 0.017). Variability measures differed between species, showing I. dorsettensis to have a mean number of alleles per locus of 2.5–2.6 and a range of gene diversity of 0.216–0.241, while H. coarctatus showed lower values of mean number of alleles (1.9–2.0) and a range of gene diversity from 0.122 to 0.124. Given the high expected larval mobility of the two species the results are most surprising. Possible explanations are discussed in relation to population discontinuities and patterns of larval drift.  相似文献

Sesarma lepzosoma is the only species of crab inhabiting the mangrove swamps of East Africa which can climb to the top of tall mature trees, where it feeds on fresh leaves. Twice daily, in the morning and evening, this crab performs mass migrations towards the canopy and spends about three hours on the tree-tops. At dusk it descends to spend the night among the aerial roots of the tree. Two observation stations were built on a Rhizophora mucronata tree, up to 13 metres above ground level, to observe and record the feeding and spatial aspects of the behaviour of this species during its time in the canopy. Observations on the daily migrations of marked specimens showed that the crabs are faithful to a well-defined feeding site; moreover, the migration paths of the marked specimens were exceptionally constant over the whole of the two-month study period. S. leptosoma was observed to feed on mature fresh leaves by scraping the lower surface of the leaf with its chelae. It was also found to spend most of its time on leaf-buds in a particular stage of development. Water which accumulates among the scales covering these buds represents an important water supply for these crabs, which they prestmably use to reduce physiological stress due to water loss. Feeding-site fidelity in S. leptosoma seems to be related more to the chance of finding suitable leaf-buds, which are relatively rare and patchily distributed, than finding leaves, which are abundant and uniformly distributed all over the canopy.  相似文献

Commensal pea crabs inhabiting bivalves have a high reproductive output due to the extension andfecundity of the ovary. We studied the underlying morphology of the female reproductive system in the Pinnotheridae Pinnotheres pisum, Pinnotheres pectunculi and Nepinnotheres pinnotheres using light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Eubrachyura have internal fertilization: the paired vaginas enlarge into storage structures, the spermathecae, which are connected to the ovaries by oviducts. Sperm is stored inside the spermathecae until the oocytes are mature. The oocytes are transported by oviducts into the spermathecae where fertilization takes place. In the investigated pinnotherids, the vagina is of the “concave pattern” (sensu Hartnoll 1968 ): musculature is attached alongside flexible parts of the vagina wall that controls the dimension of its lumen. The genital opening is closed by a muscular mobile operculum. The spermatheca can be divided into two distinct regions by function and morphology. The ventral part includes the connection with vagina and oviduct and is regarded as the zone where fertilization takes place. It is lined with cuticle except where the oviduct enters the spermatheca by the “holocrine transfer tissue.” At ovulation, the oocytes have to pass through this multilayered glandular epithelium performing holocrine secretion. The dorsal part of the spermatheca is considered as the main sperm storage area. It is lined by a highly secretory apocrine glandular epithelium. Thus, two different forms of secretion occur in the spermathecae of pinnotherids. The definite role of secretion in sperm storage and fertilization is not yet resolved, but it is notable that structure and function of spermathecal secretion are more complex in pinnotherids, and probably more efficient, than in other brachyuran crabs. The larval development of three crabs of the Varunidae family, (Hemigrapsus sanguineus, H. penicillatus, and H. longitarsis), widely spread in Russian waters of the Sea of Japan, were studied under laboratory conditions. At a temperature of 20–22°C and a salinity of 32‰ about 30% of larvae a complete developmental cycle, including five zoeal stages and megalopa, took from 22 to 30 days. All larval stages are illustrated and described in detail. Zoea I and zoea II of the studied crabs are not distinguishable. Zoea III–V of these species differ in the number of dorsomedial setae on the abdominal somite I and in the number of setae on the posterodorsal arch. The megalopae of three Hemigrapsus species possess a different number of segments, aesthetascs and setae on the antennular exopod. In spite of the great similarity of larvae of genera Hemigrapsus and Eriocheir, the latter possesses a number of distinctive features in all developmental stages, supporting the separation of these genera.  相似文献

Freshwater crab sister group relationships with marine eubrachyuran families were investigated. A morphology-based cladistic analysis was conducted on representatives of the freshwater crab families Deckeniidae, Gecarcinucidae, Parathelphusidae, Potamidae, Potamonautidae, Pseudothelphusidae, and Trichodactylidae using a disparate assemblage of marine heterotreme and thoracotreme brachyurans as possible sister groups. The monophyly of the freshwater crabs sensu lato is falsified. The family Trichodactylidae and the marine portunid subfamily Carcininae form basal groups within the superfamily Portunoidea. The monophyly of the Pseudothelphusidae and the Paleotropical freshwater crab families is supported, and this clade is the sister group of the Thoracotremata (Gecarcinidae, Grapsidae s.l., and Ocypodoidea). The origin, groundplan, and diversification of freshwater crabs are discussed in the context of previously published scenarios of their evolution.  相似文献

Sesarma leptosoma an East African mangrove-dwelling crab, migrates twice a day from a system of known dens among the roots to well-defined feeding areas in the branches of trees, reaching 15 m high. Field experiments were performed to test whether chemical or visual cues are involved in the orientation and homing of this species to reach their feeding areas. Manipulation of the substratum at branch junctions, in order to alter possible chemical cues, did not affect homing ability in S. leptosoma. Moreover, crabs trained to cross an asymmetrical artificial wooden fork could still follow their preferred directions after (1) the fork branches had been switched, (2) the whole fork had been rotated around the trunk, resulting in a right-left inversion, and (3) the inversion of two wide black and white screens hiding most of the canopy from view of the climbing crabs. These results suggest that S. leptosoma may not rely on reference systems such as chemical trail-following and chemical or visual cues from the substratum, but probably depend on complex visual information from the surroundings trunks and/or from the sun's position integrated with junction sequence memory.  相似文献

Three low molecular weight, metal-binding components have been isolated from the hepatopancreas of the shrimp Palaemon elegans. The two larger components P-I (11-15,000) and P-II (4-6000) were associated with large amounts of copper in field-collected and copper-exposed shrimps and with cadmium in shrimps exposed to elevated Cd concentrations. A smaller component, P-III was associated with zinc. The recovery of these components was dependent upon the use of a protease inhibitor and the reducing agent mercaptoethanol (2-M) during the separation procedure. Copper, zinc and cadmium are not evenly distributed between individual tissues of P. elegans, the highest concentrations occurring in the hepatopancreas, gills and eyes.  相似文献

The morphological transformation of hermit crabs into crab‐like king crabs in the evolution of decapod crustaceans represents a remarkable case of carcinization or evolutionary shaping into a crab‐like form. In this study, we focus on internal organs such as the hemolymph vascular system and adjacent anatomical structures of several Recent hermit crab (Paguridae) and king crab (Lithodidae) species. There are various correspondences in the morphology of the arterial systems in the dorsal cephalothorax of the two taxa, especially with regard to the anterior aorta, anterior lateral arteries, and hepatic arteries. In the pleon, the posterior aorta in both taxa displays a proximal bifurcation and follows an asymmetrical course. The ventral vessel system, on the other hand, which mainly supplies the limbs, differs significantly between the taxa, with pagurids displaying the plesiomorphic condition. The pattern of the ventral vessel system in Lithodidae is influenced by morphological transformations of integumental structures during carcinization. One of these transformations was the broadening of the sternites, which resulted in a widening of the space between the endosternites. In addition, changes in the morphology of the endophragmal skeleton in Lithodidae led to an increase in the potential for intraspecific variability and interspecific variation in the arterial branching pattern. Abstract: All known etyid crabs (Crustacea, Decapoda) from the upper Albian – lower Cenomanian Aldoirar coralgal‐dominated patch reef (Albeniz Unit, Eguino Formation), as exposed at the disused Koskobilo quarry in Navarra, northern Spain, are described, discussed and illustrated. A new species, Xanthosia koskobiloensis, the first member of the genus on record from southern Europe, is erected, and a variety that appears closely related to this, Xanthosia cf. X. koskobiloensis, is recognised. This new taxon could be a forerunner of the early Palaeocene (Danian) Xanthosia gracilis from Fakse (Sjælland, eastern Denmark), with which it shares a morphologically closely similar carapace. On the basis of a revised overview here of all species assigned to it, the genus Xanthosia may have evolved in an environment dominated by deposition of siliciclastics, rather than chalks. In addition, Etyxanthosia fossa has been collected at Koskobilo, and as the distribution of all known specimens demonstrates, E. fossa inhabited various environments. Another new species, Caloxanthus paraornatus, is closely similar as well to a species from Fakse, Caloxanthus ornatus, and constitutes the first record of the genus for southern Europe.  相似文献

Male True Crabs use two pairs of gonopods to deliver mating products during copulation. Commonly, the second pair is shorter than the first pair, and most research to date has focused on species with short second gonopods. We investigated male and female copulatory organs in Calappula saussurei and Calappa pelii, two species of box crabs (Calappidae) with second gonopods which are longer than the first pair. Scanning electron microscopy and histological cross sectioning show that the female copulatory system is unique in several aspects: the genital duct is part concave and part simple type. The seminal receptacle is divided into two chambers, a ventral chamber of ectodermal and mesodermal origin, and a dorsal chamber of ectodermal origin. This dorsal chamber is the location of spermatophore reception during copulation. A sperm plug closes the dorsal chamber off. We propose that long second gonopods deliver male mating products directly into the dorsal chamber. To date, spermatophore reception has been associated with the mesodermal tissue of the seminal receptacle. A new species of a microsporidan, Abelspora portucalensis, was found in the hepatopancreas of Carcinus maenas, forming white xenomas. Each xenoma seems to consist of an aggregate of hypertrophic host cells in which the parasite develops and proliferates. This cytozoic microsporidan being characterized by one uninucleate schizont giving rise to two sporonts, each originating two sporoblasts, resulting in two spores within a persistent sporophorous vacuole (pansporoblast) should be included in a new family Abelsporidae. In fresh smears most spores were 3.1–3.2 μm long and 1.2–1.4 μm wide. Fixed, stained, and observed in SUS mature spores measured 3.1 ± 0.08 × 1.3 ± 0.06 μm (n = 25 measurements). Spore cytoplasm was dense and granular, polyribosomes were arranged in helicoidal tape form. The polar filament was anisofilar and consisted of a single coil with 5–6 turns. The anchoring disc and and the anterior zone of the filament are surrounded by the polaroplast composed of two usual zones. In the anterior zone, the membrane of the polar filament is in continuity with the membranes of the polaroplast. The appearance of a microsporidan with described nuclear divisions in life cycle, spores shape and size, polaroplast and polar filament morphology and identity of the host suggests that we may erect a new genus Abelspora and a new species A. portucalensis (Portugal = Portucalem).  相似文献

The evolution of air-breathing in land crabs is associated with a progressive shift in the primary site of respiratory gas exchange from the diffusion-limited gills used for water-breathing, via a simple 'cutaneous' lung surface to the perfusion-limited, invaginated lung described in the mountain crab, Pseudothelphusa garmani. The reduced diffusion limitation over the lungs facilitates oxygen transfer from air to the tissues at lower ventilation rates but is associated with accumulation of carbon dioxide. A potential respiratory acidosis is buffered by the respiratory pigment haemocyanin and by elevation of haemolymph bicarbonate levels. These changes parallel those described in vertebrates but air-breathing crustaceans maintain relatively low carbon dioxide levels in the haemolymph, either by retaining an aquatic route for its elimination over the reduced gills or by blowing it off across the lung. Maintenance of low carbon dioxide levels may be associated with a limited capacity to buffer against an acidosis due to low levels of circulating haemocyanin (i.e. crustaceans lack red blood cells). This may ultimately limit their survival in air as an acidosis will reduce oxygen transport due to a marked Bohr effect on haemocyanin. The primary role of an invaginated lung may be to reduce rates of water loss in air.  相似文献
