Indices of reproductive skew depend on average reproductive success   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Several indices of reproductive skew, which quantify the degree of unequal partitioning of reproductive output among members in an animal society, have been proposed. Here we point out the drawbacks of these indices. The most serious problem is the dependence of the indices on mean reproductive success: skew values tend to be larger, as average numbers of offspring decrease, due to random sampling error in numbers of offspring. Thus it is difficult to compare societies with different average lifetime reproductive success using these indices, even though we have presented methods to calculate the expected reproductive skew caused by random sampling error, especially when average numbers of offspring are small, as is often the case with cooperatively breeding vertebrates. As an alternative, we propose using the spatial dispersion indices of population ecology (Morisita's index or its standardized version) for the measurement of reproductive skew. These indices are almost independent of average fecundity and have their own method of testing for random variation in offspring numbers. Abstract: Understanding the relationship between life-history patterns and population growth is central to demographic studies. Here we derive a new method for calculating the timing of reproductive output, from which the generation time and its variance can also be calculated. The method is based on the explicit computation of the net reproductive rate (R0) using a new graphical approach. Using nodding thistle, desert tortoise, creeping aven, and cat's ear as examples, we show how R0 and the timing of reproduction is calculated and interpreted, even in cases with complex life cycles. We show that the explicit R0 formula allows us to explore the effect of all reproductive pathways in the life cycle, something that cannot be done with traditional analysis of the population growth rate (lambda). Additionally, we compare a recently published method for determining population persistence conditions with the condition R0 > 1 and show how the latter is simpler and more easily interpreted biologically. Using our calculation of the timing of reproductive output, we illustrate how this demographic measure can be used to understand the effects of life-history traits on population growth and control.  相似文献

In modern agriculture, assisted reproductive technologies are being used for out of season oestrus induction, enhancement of reproductive performance and genetic improvement. In addition, they can have substantial contribution in preservation of endangered species or breeds, as well as in eradication programs of various diseases. While their applications are widespread in cattle, in small ruminants it is almost restricted to artificial insemination. The main limitations of a wider application in small ruminants are the naturally occurring anoestrus period, the variability of response to superovulatory treatments, the fertilisation failure and the need of surgery for collection and transfer of gametes and embryos. Nonetheless, during the last 30 years, considerable progress has been made in sheep and goat embryo technologies, especially in the fields of oestrus synchronisation, superovulation and in vitro embryo production. This paper reviews the status of assisted reproductive technologies in sheep, analysing the prospects offered by recent advances in in vivo and in vitro embryo production from mature and juvenile lambs.  相似文献

Macroscopic and histological changes were examined on the female reproductive organs of Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) with varying reproductive status in enclosed and provisioned troops. The weight and size of reproductive organs are described. The size of uterus declined in 2–3 months after parturition. The number of parturition was roughly estimated by degrees of sclerosis in myometrial vessels. The nipple length of parous animals was longer than that of nulliparous ones. The bilateral difference in the length (more than 3 mm) between nipples indicated the experience of nursing. Interpreting ovaries on the basis of macroscopic examination alone was less precise. The present results suggested that the female sexual maturity and the experience of nursing can be estimated by the measurement of reproductive organs in the Japanese monkey.  相似文献

To determine reproductive success, it is necessary for the researcher to specify a criterion of success, such as the number of a parent's offspring living to the age of reproduction. A measurement model, which includes the researcher's choice of criterion, has been proposed to estimate the lifetime reproductive success (R) of long-lived animals from complete or incomplete knowledge of the reproductive life histories of mothers and the survival fates of offspring. This research uses R and data from female baboons of Mikumi National Park, Tanzania, as vehicles to investigate the relationship between reproductive success and several criteria. Secondarily, it also investigates the relationship between R and the number and rate of offspring production. Seven criteria of reproductive success, ranging in 12-month increments from 0 (birth) to 72 months of offspring life, were applied to 10.5 years of reproductive data from 61 Mikumi females. Theoretically, the best scenario for comparative purposes is an invariant R across different criteria; however, the mean R systematically increased as the criteria increased. This is more an inconvenience than a serious problem because high correlations indicate high predictability between Rs from pairs of criteria. R was modestly correlated with the rate of offspring production, indicating that rate can be employed as a rough index of reproductive success. In the regulatory process, the hazards posed by potentially toxic agents to the female and male reproductive systems and to developing young are evaluated by risk assessment procedures. In this paper, toxicity testing and the regulatory process are discussed, with emphasis on risk assessment. The suggested testing protocols of the Pesticide Assessment Guidelines (U.S. EPA) are presented as an example of testing that might be done to produce toxicity data for an agent. Protocols and end points that are utilized in testing for reproductive effects are described. Included are acute, subchronic, chronic, and short-term tests. The four components of reproductive risk assessment (hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, and risk characterization) are examined. Effects of dibromochloropropane on rabbit testicular parameters are used to demonstrate approaches that could be taken in doing a reproductive risk assessment. Research needs for screening methods, adequate dose-response testing, toxicokinetics, end point development, and extrapolation methods are identified. Finally, this paper discusses selected areas in which changes in reproductive risk assessment are anticipated, as well as the mechanism for influencing the nature and extent of those changes.  相似文献

Synchronous breeding in animals and plants has stimulated both a theoretical and empirical examination of the possible benefits of active synchronization. The selective pressures of predation and infanticide are the strongest candidates proposed to explain the evolution of reproductive synchrony. Alternatively, breeding asynchronously with conspecifics may ensure a greater availability of resources per breeder. However, the possible fitness benefits resulting from active asynchronization have not yet received attention in evolutionary ecology. Here we present a hypothesis, based on a graphical model, illustrating the costs and benefits of the two modes of reproduction. We tested the hypothesis empirically using a 2 x 2 full factorial study design, where reproductive synchrony and infanticide tactics were manipulated in enclosed populations of the bank vole. The results reveal a relationship between infanticide tactics and breeding synchrony as illustrated by our hypothesis. In general, female reproductive success (number and size of offspring surviving to weaning) was significantly lower in infanticidal populations. Moreover, an asynchronous breeding pattern proved to be advantageous in the noninfanticidal population but this advantage of asynchrony was lost as infanticide became common in the population. Our findings support the idea that synchronous reproduction could have evolved as a counterstrategy against infanticide.  相似文献

近年来研究显示,kisspeptin在大脑的性别分化、性激素正负反馈调节、青春期始动以及机体能量信号转导等生理过程中起到重要作用,表明kisspeptin可能是女性生殖功能成熟及调控的一个关键性信号因子。除下丘脑分泌的kisspeptin之外,生殖器官局部表达的kisspeptin在机体正常生殖过程中的作用也不断得到证实。研究表明,很多生殖内分泌疾病,如单纯性促性腺激素分泌不足的性腺机能减退症(isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, IHH)、多囊卵巢综合征(polycystic ovary syndrome, PCOS)、卵巢早衰(premature ovarian failure, POF)、病理性高泌乳素血症等,都与kisspeptin的异常表达有关。通过给予外源性kisspeptin可解决辅助生殖技术应用中的一些问题。本文主要就kisspeptin在女性生殖内分泌尤其是在辅助生殖领域研究中所取得的进展进行论述。  相似文献

In contrast to what is generally believed, the reproductive strategies of ants are remarkably diverse and include such different phenomena, as wingless female and male sexuals, reproduction by mated workers, thelytokous parthenogenesis, and complete workerlessness. We review the various reproductive life histories and investigate them in the light of recent models on the evolution of dispersal strategies and multiple-queening. It appears that most deviations from “normal” colony propagation can be explained by a decreased success of dispersal and solitary founding by solitary queens in certain types of habitats. Consequently, alternative reproductive strategies are found especially in those species, in which environmental conditions or a highly specialized way of life are thought to make solitary founding costly. Among the key factors, which determine the success of reproductive strategies, appear to be spatial and temporal distribution of habitats and the availability of nest sites.  相似文献

In a 1966 American Naturalist article, G. C. Williams initiated the study of reproductive effort (RE) with the prediction that longer-lived organisms ought to expend less in reproduction per unit of time. We can multiply RE, often measured in fractions of adult body mass committed to reproduction per unit time, by the average adult life span to get lifetime reproductive effort (LRE). Williams's hypothesis (across species, RE decreases as life span increases) can then be refined to read "LRE will be approximately constant for similar organisms." Here we show that LRE is a key component of fitness in nongrowing populations, and thus its value is central to understanding life-history evolution. We then develop metabolic life-history theory to predict that LRE ought to be approximately 1.4 across organisms despite extreme differences in production and growth rates. We estimate LRE for mammals and lizards that differ in growth and production by five- to tenfold. The distributions are approximately normal with means of 1.43 and 1.41 for lizards and mammals, respectively (95% confidence intervals: 1.3-1.5 and 1.2-1.6). Ultimately, therefore, a female can only produce a mass of offspring approximately equal to 1.4 times her own body mass during the course of her life.  相似文献

In semelparous populations, dormant germ banks (e.g. seeds) have been proposed as important in maintaining genotypes that are adaptive at different times in fluctuating environments. Such hidden storage of genetic diversity need not be exclusive to dormant banks. Genotype diversity may be preserved in many iteroparous animals through sperm-storage mechanisms in females. This allows males to reproduce posthumously and increase the effective sizes of seemingly female-biased populations. Although long-term sperm storage has been demonstrated in many organisms, the understanding of its importance in the wild is very poor. We here show the prevalence of male posthumous reproduction in wild Trinidadian guppies, through the combination of mark–recapture and pedigree analyses of a multigenerational individual-based dataset. A significant proportion of the reproductive population consisted of dead males, who could conceive up to 10 months after death (the maximum allowed by the length of the dataset), which is more than twice the estimated generation time. Demographic analysis shows that the fecundity of dead males can play an important role in population growth and selection.  相似文献
