As in many Lepidoptera, Plutella xylostella adults do not feed on protein and females must use accumulated reserves to supply vitellogenin synthesis. Storage proteins were quantified in females and males from the late larval stage through day 4 of adult life. The level of storage protein peaked in the early pupal stage, with females having about twice as much as males. In males, the level fell through pupal development and dropped to a trace by one day after eclosion. In females, level of storage proteins fell until eclosion, and then rose dramatically within four hours after the molt to about 2/3 of the original peak level. This post-eclosion increase, which has not been reported previously in insects, suggests that adult females synthesize hexamerins to resequester amino acids. Subsequently, the level of storage proteins fell as vitellogenin appeared and eggs were laid. The ability to synthesize and sequester amino acids as storage proteins during the adult stage has wide-ranging implication for protein management in insects, particularly those that are long-lived and have flexible schedules of reproduction.  相似文献

Acidic methanolic extracts of larvae of nine different insect species were found to contain substances that cause a lethal effect in the adult stage of the same species and of other species. These endogenous toxic substances, apparently being widely spread over the class of insects, were designated as paralysins, because of their immediate and observable paralytic effect upon injection. The developmental concentration curves of five different species of insects (Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera), Neobellieria bullata (Diptera), Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera), Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera) and Schistocerca gregaria (Orthoptera) indicate that the toxins are not present throughout all the developmental stages in the same concentration. The strongest paralytic activity was found in late instar larvae or in the early pupal stage. The temporal distribution of paralysins during development suggests that they might be involved in metamorphosis.  相似文献

Winter geometrid moths exhibit sexual dimorphism in wing length and female‐specific flightlessness. Female‐specific flightlessness in insects is an interesting phenomenon in terms of sexual dimorphism and reproductive biology. In the winter geometrid moth, Protalcis concinnata (Wileman), adult females have short wings and adult males have fully developed wings. Although the developmental process for wing reduction in Lepidoptera is well studied, little is known about the morphology and the developmental pattern of short‐winged flightless morphs in Lepidoptera. To clarify the precise mechanisms and developmental processes that produce short‐winged morphs, we performed morphological and histological investigations of adult and pupal wing development in the winter geometrid moth P. concinnata. Our findings showed that (a) wing development in both sexes is similar until larval‐pupal metamorphosis, (b) the shape of the sexually dimorphic wings is determined by the position of the bordering lacuna (BL), (c) the BL is positioned farther inward in females than in males, and (d) after the short pupal diapause period, the female pupal wing epithelium degenerates to approximately two‐thirds its original size due to cell death. We propose that this developmental pattern is a previously unrecognized process among flightless Lepidoptera.  相似文献

Although various biological aspects of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) have been examined, adult movement and dispersal of this insect pest is not well understood. Release-recapture techniques by using marked insects is a useful approach for dispersal studies; however, the marking technique should not significantly affect insect biology or behavior. Therefore, the effect of different concentrations of oil-soluble dyes (Solvent Blue 35 [C.I. 61554], Sudan Red 7B [C.I. 26050], Sudan Black B [26150], Sudan Orange G [C.I. 11920], and Sudan I 103624 [C.I. 12055]) on development, mortality, and fecundity of S. frugiperda was evaluated. Dyes were added to artificial diet used to feed larvae. Larval and pupal development and mortality, adult longevity, and female fecundity were evaluated. High concentrations (400 and 600 ppm) of all dyes led to longer larval and pupal stages. Adult life span and number of eggs were not affected by the dyes. Sudan Red 7B marked both adults and eggs very well. Solvent Blue 35 marked both adults and eggs, but the blue-marked eggs could not be distinguished from some bluish eggs laid by nonlabeled females. Adults and eggs were not adequately marked by the Sudan Black B, Sudan Orange G, and Sudan I 103624 (a yellow dye).  相似文献

Typical multicopper oxidases (MCOs) have ten conserved histidines and one conserved cysteine that coordinate four copper atoms. These copper ions are required for oxidase activity. During our studies of insect MCOs, we discovered a gene that we named multicopper oxidase-related protein (MCORP). MCORPs share sequence similarity with MCOs, but lack many of the copper-coordinating residues. We identified MCORP orthologs in many insect species, but not in other invertebrates or vertebrates. We predicted that MCORPs would lack oxidase activity due to the absence of copper-coordinating residues. To test this prediction, we purified recombinant Tribolium castaneum (red flour beetle) MCORP and analyzed its enzymatic activity using a variety of substrates. As expected, no oxidase activity was detected. To study MCORP function in vivo, we analyzed expression profiles of TcMCORP and Anopheles gambiae (African malaria mosquito) MCORP, and assessed RNAi-mediated knockdown phenotypes. We found that both MCORPs are constitutively expressed at a low level in all of the tissues we analyzed. Injection of TcMCORP dsRNA into larvae resulted in 100% mortality prior to adult eclosion, with death occurring mainly during the pharate pupal stage or late pharate adult stage. Injection of TcMCORP dsRNA into pharate pupae resulted in the death of approximately 20% of the treated insects during the pupal to adult transition and a greatly shortened life span for the remaining insects. In addition, knockdown of TcMCORP in females prevented oocyte maturation and, thus, greatly decreased the number of eggs laid. These results indicate that TcMCORP is an essential gene and that its function is required for reproduction. An understanding of the role MCORP plays in insect physiology may help to develop new strategies for controlling insect pests.  相似文献

Throughout an organism's lifetime, resources are strategically allocated to many different functions, including reproduction. Reproduction can be costly for both sexes; females produce nutrient‐rich eggs, whereas males of many species produce large and complex ejaculates. In capital breeding insects, nutrients are mainly acquired during the larval period, yet allocation decisions impact the reproductive fitness of adults. The present study examines the effect of larval dietary nitrogen on both male and female reproductive traits in the European corn borer moth Ostrinia nubilalis Hübner, whose adults do not feed and whose males transfer a large, nitrogen‐rich spermatophore. One day post‐eclosion, O. nubilalis adults reared on one of three different diets (3.0%, 1.6%, or 1.1% nitrogen) are mated and two experiments are undertaken: one to measure nitrogen and carbon content of male ejaculates, and the other to determine female fecundity and fertility. Although male larval diet does not alter the percentage nitrogen content of adult somatic tissue, males reared on the higher nitrogen diet (3.0%) produce spermatophores with increased nitrogen relative to somatic nitrogen. Furthermore, females raised on the 3.0% nitrogen diet receive spermatophores with lower carbon : nitrogen ratios and thus more nitrogen. Overall, females lay more eggs as their larval dietary nitrogen increases, although they lay fewer eggs when their mates are raised on the higher (3.0%) nitrogen diet. This suggests that O. nubilalis females may use male‐derived nitrogen not to supplement egg production, but rather for somatic maintenance. Overall, the present study furthers our understanding of how larval diet can affect adult fitness in Lepidoptera.  相似文献

The housefly larvae were grown in the aseptic diet containing 0.56 μmole cholesterol/g wet weight of diet (control) and 0.05 μmole cholesterol/g wet weight of diet (deficient). The effects of cholesterol deficiency upon the phospholipid composition and fatty acids of the total phospholipid and triglyceride fractions from the lipid extract of the various larval tissues, whole larva, and in both sexes of adults 4 days after eclosion were examined. The total sterol and phospholipid contents (expressed relative to the wet weight of the insect) of the control and deficient insects at the larval and adult stages were analysed and molar ratios compared. The results suggest that cholesterol deficiency reduced the free sterol content of the larvae and adult insects to approximately 25% of the content of the control insects. However, cholesterol deficiency did not effect the phospholipid content during larval and adult stages when compared to that of control insects. Though the larvae reared on the cholesterol deficient diets did not show a profound alteration in the phospholipid composition, a marked increase in the ratio of phosphatidylcholine to phosphatidylethanolamine of the larval fat body and composite gut fraction were noticed. The cholesterol deficiency induced significant changes in the fatty acid composition of the phospholipid fraction of the insect. The ratio of unsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids of the phospholipid fractions decreased significantly due to cholesterol deficiency in the whole larvae and in both sexes of adult flies. The data indicates that cholesterol deficient insects compensated for the lack of cholesterol by increasing saturated fatty acids preferentially in the phospholipid fraction of the lipids for the maintenance of proper membrane fluidity.  相似文献

The insect growth regulators (IGRs) tebufenozide and methoxyfenozide and the broad-spectrum insecticides azinphosmethyl, carbaryl, and fenpropathrin were compared for their activity against adult, egg, and larval stages of the grape berry moth, Endopiza viteana (Clemens) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), under laboratory and vineyard conditions. Adult mortality was not affected by exposure to field-equivalent rates of tebufenozide or methoxyfenozide on grape clusters, whereas all the broad-spectrum compounds significantly reduced adult survival, compared with the untreated controls. Surviving adult moths laid significantly more eggs on berries treated with the IGRs than on berries treated with any of the broad-spectrum insecticides. Survival of these eggs through to late larval and pupal stages was significantly lower on methoxyfenozide-treated grapes than on untreated grapes, and no pupae were found when grapes were treated with azinphosmethyl or fenpropathrin. Neither of the growth regulator insecticides limited egg eclosion or larval development by E. viteana when insecticides were applied before egg laying, whereas broad-spectrum insecticides were effective against both eggs and neonates at this timing. When applied after egg eclosion, all insecticide treatments significantly reduced survival of grape berry moth larvae. Under vineyard conditions, berries with 1-d-old residues of tebufenozide or methoxyfenozide received more E. viteana eggs than berries treated with broad-spectrum compounds. After aging for 7 or 14 d, no significant effects on E. viteana survival were detected among treatments. Whereas broad-spectrum insecticides provide control of multiple life stages of E. viteana, integration of tebufenozide or methoxyfenozide into vineyard management programs for control of this pest will be most successful if applications are timed for egg hatch.  相似文献

Understanding how a single genome creates and maintains distinct phenotypes is a central goal in evolutionary biology. Social insects are a striking example of co‐opted genetic backgrounds giving rise to dramatically different phenotypes, such as queen and worker castes. A conserved set of molecular pathways, previously envisioned as a set of ‘toolkit’ genes, has been hypothesized to underlie queen and worker phenotypes in independently evolved social insect lineages. Here, we investigated the toolkit from a developmental point of view, using RNA‐Seq to compare caste‐biased gene expression patterns across three life stages (pupae, emerging adult and old adult) and two female castes (queens and workers) in the ant Formica exsecta. We found that the number of genes with caste‐biased expression increases dramatically from pupal to old adult stages. This result suggests that phenotypic differences between queens and workers at the pupal stage may derive from a relatively low number of caste‐biased genes, compared to higher number of genes required to maintain caste differences at the adult stage. Gene expression patterns were more similar among castes within developmental stages than within castes despite the extensive phenotypic differences between queens and workers. Caste‐biased expression was highly variable among life stages at the level of single genes, but more consistent when gene functions (gene ontology terms) were investigated. Finally, we found that a large part of putative toolkit genes were caste‐biased at least in some life stages in F. exsecta, and the caste‐biases, but not their direction, were more often shared between F. exsecta and other ant species than between F. exsecta and bees. Our results indicate that gene expression should be examined across several developmental stages to fully reveal the genetic basis of polyphenisms.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Body weight is often used as an estimator of production costs in aculeate Hymenoptera; however, due to differences between sexes in metabolic rates and water content, conversion of provision weight to body weight may differ between males and females. As a result, the cost of producing female progeny may often have been overestimated.
2. Provision weight and body weight loss throughout development were measured in a solitary bee, Osmia cornuta (Latreille), to detect potential differences between sexes in food weight/body weight conversion.
3. Male O. cornuta invest a larger proportion of larval weight in cocoon spinning, and presumably have higher metabolic rates than females during the larval period; however, this is compensated by a slightly longer larval period in females.
4. Overall, body weight loss throughout the life cycle does not differ significantly between sexes. As a result, cost production ratios calculated from provision weights and from adult body weights are almost identical.
5. The validity of other weight (cocoon, faeces) and linear (head width, intertegular span, wing length, cocoon length, and cell length) measures as estimators of production costs is also discussed.
6. Valid estimators of production costs vary across species due to differences in sex weight ratio, cocoon shape, provision size in reference to cell size, and adult body size.  相似文献

Temperature is a key environmental factor for ectotherms and affects a large number of life history traits. In the present study, development time from hatching to pupation and adult eclosion, pupal and adult weights of the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis were examined at 22, 25, 28 and 31 °C under L18:D 6. Larval and pupal times were significantly decreased with increasing rearing temperature and growth rate was positively correlated with temperature. Larval and pupal developmental times were not significantly different between females and males. The relationship between body weight and rearing temperature in C. suppressalis did not follow the temperature–size rule (TSR), both males and females gained the highest body weight at 31 °C. Females were significantly larger than males at all temperatures, showing a female biased sex size dimorphism (SSD). Contrary to Rensch's rule, SSD and body weight in C. suppressalis tended to increase with rising temperature. Male pupae lost significantly more weight at metamorphosis compared to females. We discuss the adaptive significance of the reverse-TSR in the moth's life history.  相似文献

Soon after pupal eclosion, adult Chrysoperla congrua undergo obligatory ontogenetic colour change. This phenomenon, unique among lacewings to C. congrua , is investigated further and its functional significance is discussed. Four to 5 days after eclosion, adult C. congrua undergo obligatory ontogenetic colour change from yellow-brown to green, which corresponds with maturation of gonads in both sexes. Courtship displays by both sexes involving abdominal tremulation (calling) always occurred soon after colour change. I propose that colour change in adult C. congrua serves not only as camouflage in a dynamic habitat, as suggested by previous authors, but may also serve as a visual cue to conspecifics of sexual maturity and receptiveness to a potential mate.  相似文献

Life‐history traits from four geographical populations (tropical Ledong population [LD], subtropical Guangzhou [GZ] and Yongxiu populations, and temperate Langfang population [LF]) of the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis were investigated at a wide range of temperatures (20–32°C). The larval and pupal times were significantly decreased with increasing rearing temperature, and growth rate was positively correlated with temperature. The relationship between body weight and rearing temperature in O. furnacalis did not follow the temperature–size rule (TSR); all populations exhibited the highest pupal and adult weights at high temperatures or intermediate temperatures. However, development time, growth rate, and body weight did not show a constant latitudinal gradient. Across all populations at each temperature, female were significantly bigger than males, showing a female‐biased sexual size dimorphism (SSD). Contrary to Rensch's rule, the SSD tended to increase with rising temperature. The subtropical GZ population exhibited the largest degree of dimorphism while the temperate LF exhibited the smallest. Male pupae lose significantly more weight at metamorphosis compared to females. The proportionate weight losses of different populations were significantly different. Adult longevity was significantly decreased with increasing temperature. Between sexes, all populations exhibit a rather female‐biased adult longevity. Finally, we discuss the adaptive significance of higher temperature‐inducing high body weight in the moth's life history and why the moth exhibits the reverse TSR.  相似文献

The adult demography of a population of Speyeria mormonia (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) near Gothic, Colorado USA was studied for four years. Values of demographic parameters, including survival, dispersal and sex ratio, varied yearly, without major changes in density. Shift in sex ratio with constant population numbers entails variation in effective population size among years. Flight period, catchability, relationship between body size and eclosion date, and significance of correlation between weather and daily survival rates differed between the sexes. Sexual dimorphism in correlation of wheather with survival rate may partially explain the lack of yearly variation in total population size. There was no significant sexual dimorphism in large scale habitat use, or in dispersal, except in 1982.
The demography of this insect is compared to that of related species of Argynnis and heliconiines, from the old world temperate zone and new world tropics, respectively. While some differences are observed which can be ascribed to differences in length of the growing season, many patterns are similar. This implies conservation of demographic traits, even across broad habitat and geographic areas.  相似文献

The beet webworm, Loxostege sticticalis L. (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), unlike many temperate insects and despite its wide distribution range, has a geographically stable value of the critical photoperiod for diapause induction. It has thus been hypothesized that the species could adjust its life cycle to different climates in an alternative way, which should be reflected in geographical variation and/or environmental plasticity of some other ecophysiological trait. Three remote populations of the beet webworm were studied. The insects were reared from egg to adult at several combinations of temperature and photoperiod in order to measure development times of all the immature stages and pre‐pupal body weight, and to characterize the sensitivity of these life‐history traits to the two ecological factors. The thermal reaction norms for immature development appeared to be significantly different in the three populations. There was also a significant effect of photoperiod on development time as well as on the thermal sensitivity and lower temperature threshold for larval development. Pre‐pupae from the northernmost population were heavier and their body mass was more strongly affected by photoperiod than in the other two, but attainment of a greater weight under short‐day conditions, especially combined with higher temperatures, was common for all the three populations. Nevertheless, all the discovered geographical and environmentally induced differences in life‐history traits were very small and their adaptive significance remains problematic.  相似文献

分别用水稻苗、茭白、水稻 +荸荠 3种方法 ,喂饲二化螟Chilosupperssalis初孵幼虫 ,比较室内 3种饲养方法对二化螟生长发育和繁殖力的影响 ,从而为二化螟的实验室饲养提供方法和依据。其中 ,在整个幼虫期用茭白饲养的二化螟幼虫发育历期和化蛹历期最短 ,分别为 ( 1 7 8± 0 5 )d和 ( 9 8± 0 8)d ,而用水稻苗饲养的二化螟幼虫发育历期和化蛹历期最长 ,分别为 ( 3 0 4± 1 2 )d和 ( 2 0 0± 1 6)d。水稻苗喂饲二化螟的雌雄蛹的比例较低 ,仅为 0 44;荸荠有利于雌性个体的分化 ,用水稻 +荸荠相结合喂饲二化螟的雌雄蛹比例为 1 1 8。用荸荠喂饲的蛹最重 (雌和雄蛹重分别为 71和 5 1mg 头 )。 3种饲养方法对二化螟的产卵率和孵化率无显著影响 ,但是 ,用水稻饲养二化螟蛹的羽化率比其它 2种饲养方法显著降低。由此可见 ,用茭白、水稻苗 +荸荠饲养方法进行二化螟饲养是切实可行的 ,它们有利于二化螟的生长发育。  相似文献

Four accessions of the wild species Brassica fruticulosa Cyrillo (Brassicaceae) were studied in order to identify its tolerance and antibiosis resistance to the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum L. (Diptera: Anthomyiidae), in comparison to a widely cultivated cauliflower cultivar and a rapid cycling Brassica oleracea L. line. Antibiosis was prominent, as the insects reared on resistant accessions showed reduced individual pupal weight, total pupal weight, adult dry weight, and the longest average fly eclosion time. Host plant resistance, however, did not affect the sex ratio of adult flies. A study of the root architecture of plants with and without root fly inoculation revealed differences in the structure within B. oleracea accessions. A long main root and a high number of lateral roots appeared to be important characteristics for a Brassica type, with a higher tolerance level to cabbage root fly attack.  相似文献

Although the general concept of capital vs. income breeding has become widely used in insect ecology, finding easy‐to‐measure indices for quantifying the role of larval‐ vs. adult‐derived nutrients in egg production has remained a challenge. When searching for possible candidates for this task, we evaluated the applicability of three morphometric ratios to be measured on freshly eclosed adults: (1) relative size of female abdomen, (2) sexual size dimorphism, and (3) proportion of volume of mature eggs relative to total volume of female abdomen. We report the values of these indices in five species of geometrid moths [Hypomecis punctinalis Scopoli, Ematurga atomaria L., Selenia tetralunaria Hufnagel, Semiothisa clathrata L., and Epirrhoe alternata Müller (all Lepidoptera: Geometridae)] and compare them to the degrees of income breeding measured directly by oviposition experiments. As a comparison, we also recorded the ovigeny index and the effect of income on lifespan. All morphometric indices varied considerably between the species studied, and, as predicted, the values of all three proposed indices were higher in the more capital‐breeding species. The only exception to this pattern was a low proportion of mature eggs in abdomens in one primarily capital‐breeding species, S. tetralunaria. Unlike other capital breeders, this species also proved to be largely synovigenic, indicating that capital breeding and pro‐ovigeny are not strictly linked. The reproductive traits measured concord with ecological niches occupied by the species studied: the oligophagous meadow dwellers were largely income breeding and synovigenic, whereas the polyphagous forest dwellers were capital breeders. The high and predictable among‐species variation in egg‐production strategies suggests that geometrid moths form a promising target group for comparative studies on respective traits. Simple anatomical indices, in turn, appear to be applicable as easy‐to‐record proxies of egg production strategies.  相似文献

选择上海地区近年甜菜夜蛾Spodoptera exigua(Hübner)发生比较严重的甘蓝、豇豆、大葱、芦笋4种寄主植物,在温度(27±1)℃,相对湿度70%±5%,光照L:D=14:10的条件下研究了不同寄主植物对甜菜夜蛾发育特征的影响。结果表明,不同寄主植物饲喂甜菜夜蛾,甜菜夜蛾幼虫发育历期、存活率、蛹重、成虫寿命、净生殖力和内禀增长率等参数在寄主植物间有显著差异。用甘蓝饲喂的甜菜夜蛾雌虫产卵量明显高于取食大葱和芦笋的。同样,取食甘蓝的甜菜夜蛾蛹重、净生殖力和种群内禀增长率等参数明显高于取食大葱和芦笋的,说明甘蓝与其他寄主植物相比提供了较好质量的食物。  相似文献
