The prevalence of diapause response to the simulated threat of fish predation was compared in three species of planktonic crustaceans of the genus Daphnia (D. magna, D. pulicaria and D. longispina), which due to their different body size vary in vulnerability to fish predation pressure in natural conditions. Higher incidence of diapause response was presumed in the larger-bodied species, which due to their higher conspicuousness and higher energetic content experience the greatest size-selective pressure from visually foraging fish. Small-bodied species were expected to utilize less costly yet less effective active defences, e.g. lower conspicuousness achieved due to slower body growth when facing risk of size-selective predation. Proportions of females forming diapausing structures as well as females body size at the maturation period were compared in experimental beakers containing or not containing fish kairomones (chemical cues of fish predation) in a few clonal lineages of 3 species of Daphnia derived from a single lake inhabited by fish. The highest incidence of diapause response to fish kairomones was observed in D. magna (when measured both as proportion of sensitive individuals and as proportion of inductive clones), the largest of the tested Daphnia species. The lowest proportion of individuals and clones that employed diapause was reported in the smallest tested species, D. longispina. In addition, the large-bodied Daphnia (D. magna) showed a greater reduction in body size in response to fish kairomones than the small-bodied species (D. longispina). The results of the present study support the assumption of higher prevalence of diapause response to the threat of selective predation in larger and more vulnerable prey species.  相似文献

It has been hypothesized that the production of diapausing eggs in Daphnia can be induced by fish kairomones. A population of Daphnia could survive severe predation using this predator avoidance strategy. However, in changing environments, diapausing eggs experience various temperature conditions, and hatchlings at emergence may be exposed to the same predation risks as their mothers. Therefore, staying in diapause or an immediate response upon hatching to available environmental information could be important for hatchling survival. For this study, we investigated the impact of water temperature (10, 15, 20, and 25°C) in the presence and absence of fish kairomones (Lepomis macrochirus) on the hatching success of resting eggs (D. galeata). Results show that no diapausing eggs hatched at the lowest temperature (10°C), and the highest hatch percentage occurred at 15°C. Although higher water temperatures reduced hatching success, diapausing eggs hatched more quickly. The number of hatchlings was significantly higher after exposure to fish kairomones, and this was more noticeable at higher temperatures (20 and 25°C). The present results suggest that the diapausing eggs were produced as a predator avoidance strategy in Daphnia; however, the presence of fish works as a positive signal to increase hatchlings when the diapausing stage is terminated.  相似文献

The production of diapausing eggs by Daphnia magna stimulated by fish exudates can be explained as an anti-predator defence ensuring genome protection in periods of high risk from fish predation. The combined effects on the induction of D. magna diapause of an “alarm” chemical originating from injured conspecific prey and fish kairomones were tested. The results of the experiment showed that the cues when present together promote both the production of ephippial eggs and male formation, indicating their role in the synchronization of the entire mode of Daphnia sexual reproduction. Ephippial eggs were only produced in the presence of both fish kairomone and conspecific alarm chemicals, while male offspring occurred in the treatments where both, one or none of the cues were present. However, production of males was the highest when both cues were provided. D. magna responded similarly to the tested cues whether or not the hypothetical alarm substance associated with predator odour came from Daphnia specimens actually eaten by fish or from crushed conspecific individuals. However, chemicals from crushed chironomid larvae combined with fish kairomones did not induce a similar response in D. magna. The relative advantage of utilization of alarm cues or predator kairomones in the induction of defence responses in prey organisms is discussed. In a laboratory batch culture experiment, a diapause response of Daphnia magna to a simulated threat of fish predation was tested at various light intensities, which under natural conditions determine potential vulnerability of Daphnia to visual planktivorous fish. 2. Under moderate light intensity (1.4 μmol m?2 s?1) that allows effective predation by fish, the proportion of females producing dormant eggs was significantly higher than under dim light conditions (0.001 μmol m?2 s?1) that are not favourable for visual detection of prey. Production of dormant eggs was not observed in complete darkness or in treatments missing fish kairomones, irrespective of tested light conditions. 3. The observed phenomenon is interpreted as a flexible response of prey to the conditional risk of predation assessed by Daphnia according to the presence of fish‐derived cues on the one hand and the presence of dark refugia on the other. Irrespective of the presence of fish kairomones, Daphnia may not produce resting eggs as long as a safe, dark, bottom zone is accessible.  相似文献

The prevalence of the diapause response of the freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna to chemical cues on fish predation was evaluated in 35 clones originating from 14 European water bodies—inhabited or not inhabited by fish. Clonal lineages of experimental animals were cultured for 4 weeks in the presence or absence of water to which an extract of faeces of crucian carps (Carassius carassius), that were fed with Daphnia, was added. The proportion of females producing diapausing forms during the experimental period was used as a measure of the diapause response. A positive diapause response to fish predation cues was observed in 43% of investigated clones that originated from 71% of the water bodies tested. This indicated that the diapause response to fish scent is a common phenomenon in Daphnia magna from various locations in Europe. Surprisingly, no signs of a stronger diapause reaction to the tested cues were found in Daphnia originating from water bodies inhabited by fish compared with those from fish-free habitats.  相似文献

We tested if pelagic crustaceans of the genus Daphnia use different anti-predator defences in environmental conditions that do or do not offer deep refuge from planktivorous fish. We kept Daphnia catawba in two series of 9-m deep enclosures with and without caged cyprinid fish Phoxinus eos. In one series of enclosures, Daphnia could select its depth of residence and hide in deep dark water layers to avoid anticipated fish predation, while in another series of enclosures, a plankton net barrier fixed at 2-m depth forced them to stay in subsurface zone exposed to fish kairomones. We compared depth residence and migratory behaviour strategies with life history strategies (body size and size at first reproduction, diapause induction) in Daphnia exposed or not to fish kairomones with or without deep refuge. In deep enclosures with fish, Daphnia spent daytime hours in deep dark layers while at night, they resided closer to the water surface. Yet, no change in life history parameters of migrating individuals was observed compared to the fish-free conditions. In enclosures with fish, where the net barrier forced Daphnia to reside in subsurface zone, they produced smaller offspring, matured at smaller size and achieved lower maximum body length compared to the fish-free conditions. However, they did not produce diapausing eggs. Our experimental study supports the hypothesis that diel vertical migration behaviour with daytime residence in deep, dark water are the preferred antipredator strategy chosen by Daphnia facing anticipated fish predation over life history changes such as reduced size and low growth rate which are used when dark deep refuge is not present or accessible.  相似文献

The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is a highly invasive mosquito species that transmits chikungunya and dengue. This species overwinters as diapausing eggs in temperate climates. Early diapause termination may be a beneficial strategy for winter mosquito control; however, a mechanism to terminate the diapause process using chemicals is not known. We tested the hypothesis that a hormonal imbalance caused by the administration of juvenile hormone analog would terminate egg diapause in A. albopictus. We tested the insect growth regulator pyriproxyfen on all developmental stages to identify a susceptible stage for diapause termination. We found that pyriproxyfen treatment of mosquito eggs terminated embryonic diapause. The highest rates of diapause termination were recorded in newly deposited (78.9%) and fully embryonated (74.7%) eggs at 0.1 and 1 ppm, respectively. Hatching was completed earlier in newly deposited eggs (25–30 days) compared to fully embryonated eggs (71–80 days). The combined mortality from premature diapause termination and ovicidal activity was 98.2% in newly deposited and >98.9% in fully embryonated eggs at 1 ppm. The control diapause eggs did not hatch under diapausing conditions. Pyriproxyfen exposure to larvae, pupae and adults did not prevent the females from ovipositing diapausing eggs. There was no effect of pyriproxyfen on diapausing egg embryonic developmental time. We also observed mortality in diapausing eggs laid by females exposed to pyriproxyfen immediately after blood feeding. There was no mortality in eggs laid by females that survived larval and pupal exposures. In conclusion, diapausing eggs were the more susceptible to pyriproxyfen diapause termination compared to other life stages. This is the first report of diapause termination in A. albopictus with a juvenile hormone analog. We believe our findings will be useful in developing a new control strategy against overwintering mosquito populations.  相似文献

For intermittent Daphnia magna populations embryonic diapause following bisexual reproduction is the means of surviving in harsh environmental conditions. Another advantage of bisexuality is genetic recombination which produces a variety of genotypes. Crowding and short-day photo-periods promote bisexual reproduction, but photoperiod, at least, can not be an obligatory factor in D. magna since some bisexual females have been found also during the periods of long daylength. Because the catastrophe dates vary considerably, the most advantageous reproductive strategy must be one with some flexibility in reacting to irregular catastrophes by producing ephippial resting eggs whenever the probability of a catastrophe exceeds a certain threshold value. Extensive genetic changes occurring during diapause suggest that there are considerable genetic differences in ephippial egg production and egg survival. Genetic drift alone can not account for the great genetic changes observed, although in populations reacting slowly to changing conditions the number of diapausing ephippia can be relatively low. If the ephippia hatch over a long period of time, they can act as a stabilizing mechanism for genotype frequencies.  相似文献

The interaction of thermoperiod and photoperiod in their influence on the reproductive maturation of females and on the induction of the maternal effect determining larval diapause of the progeny of the blowfly, Calliphora vicina, was first investigated under laboratory conditions. Under the combination of a day length of 12 h with a thermoperiod (the alternation of 12 h long periods with temperatures of 10 and 20°C) the reproductive maturation of females was faster than at the corresponding mean constant temperature of 15°C. Under the “natural” thermoperiod, when the period with a temperature of 10°C coincided with “night-time” (the dark phase of the diurnal light-dark cycle) the maturation of females was slower than that under the “inverted” thermoperiod, when the period with a temperature of 10°C coincided with “day-time” (the light phase of the diurnal light-dark cycle). The proportion of diapausing individuals was maximal in the progeny of females kept at 20°C and decreased with the increase in temperature. Under thermoperiods (the alternations of 12 h long periods with temperatures of 20 and 26°C) the proportion of diapausing progeny was lower than that under the corresponding mean constant temperature of 23°C, but under the inverted thermoperiod with a high night temperature this effect was much stronger. In combination with the results of our previous studies, these data support the hypothesis that the effects of “night” and “day” temperatures are substantially different only when the thermal response interacts with a strong photoperiodic response.  相似文献

Cyclops vicinus is reported to enter summer diapause triggered by day length in order to survive food scarcity and fish predation. Development ceases and the fourth or fifth copepodid stages persist in the sediment for several weeks. In Lake Søbygård, however, a small eutrophic lake in Denmark, C. vicinus is found in the sediment as well as in the open water throughout the year. We performed laboratory experiments to elucidate the life cycle strategy of this population. In order to find the factors that induce diapause we tested the influence of food composition and light regime on the proportion of copepods entering diapause. Further we examined the diapause pattern of the offspring from diapausing and non-diapausing parents to see whether the co-occurrence of diapausing and non-diapausing copepods results from genetic differentiation within the population. In all experiments some of the copepods developed directly into adults, while others remained at the fourth or fifth copepodid stage and displayed diapause features. The proportion of copepods that developed directly into adults was influenced by food supply. Fewer individuals entered diapause when they received a mixed diet of algae and ciliates or algae, ciliates and seston compared with a pure algal diet. The response to light was different than described in literature: about 30% of the copepods entered diapause under dark conditions, and the diapause frequency was not higher when copepods had been exposed to continuous light. The offspring from diapausing parents showed no higher tendency to enter diapause than the offspring of non-diapausing parents, indicating no genetic differentiation. We conclude that diapause in C. vicinus represents a risk-spreading strategy, modified by food. The simultaneous production of diapausing and non-diapausing offspring ensures survival under harsh conditions; the influence of the food supply on the proportion of individuals entering diapause may adjust the population to the actual environmental condition. This flexible life cycle strategy might contribute to the exclusive dominance of C. vicinus in Lake Søbygård.  相似文献

Interaction of the photoperiodic conditions of development of maternal females (day lengths of 2 to 22 h at 20°C) with the thermal regime of development of their progeny (temperature of 12 to 15°C at day length of 12 h) in determination of prepupal diapause in Trichogramma piceum was studied under laboratory conditions. At 15°C the diapause was practically absent. At lower temperatures, the proportion of diapausing prepupae was maximal (25% of larvae at 14°C, 70% of larvae at 13°, and 80% of larvae at 12°C) if the maternal females developed under short day conditions (10–12 h). When maternal females developed at day lengths of 18–20 h, diapause was rarely recorded at all temperatures, while ultra-short (less than 8–10 h) days also caused a decrease in the proportion of diapausing progeny. The right (ecologically important) threshold of this maternal long-day photoperiodic response was about 14–15 h independently of the temperature during the progeny development. These results make it possible to clarify the mechanism of the “maternal photoperiodic correction of the progeny thermal response.” Although the impact of the maternal photoperiodic response can be revealed only within a very narrow thermal range, the relative strength of the diapause-inducing effect of different day lengths is independent of the temperature regimen of the progeny development.  相似文献

1. This study shows that females of Synchaeta pectinata Ehrenberg can produce two morphologically and physiologically distinct kinds of amictic eggs that develop parthenogenetically into females. One kind, until now the only one known in monogonont rotifers, is a thin-shelled (about 1.4 μm) subitaneous egg that develops without arrest. The other kind is a thick-shelled (about 9 μm) egg that enters obligatory diapause after 1–3 cleavage divisions before resuming development. The thicker shell of the diapausing egg is due to an expansion of the outer sublayer of the single-layered shell. 2. The mean duration of the diapause at 19 °C (L : D 16 : 8) is about 14 days. This diapause is not broken by low temperature (5 °C), and it is not greatly extended by storage at low temperature (5 °C). 3. Diapausing eggs are induced immediately after a brief starvation period, and seem to be produced at no additional energetic cost. However, a population producing a high proportion of diapausing eggs has a much reduced reproductive potential. 4. Production of diapausing amictic eggs may be a strategy to increase the ability of clones to survive food limitation. 5. Diapausing amictic eggs differ markedly from fertilized resting eggs produced following bisexual reproduction during favourable conditions.  相似文献

Egg maturation in Calliphora vicina is known to occur within a wide range of temperatures, from 12°C to nearly 30°C (Vinogradova, 1991). Photoperiodism has no effect on this process. Some females enter diapause already at 20°C; their fraction increases at lower temperatures and reaches 100% at 6°C. Reproducing females with eggs can survive for a long time and even lay eggs at low temperatures (4–5°C). Experiments with C. vicina from Leningrad Province revealed some effects of the diet (liver or fish) and temperature on the fly reproduction. At 20 and 25°C, 7–10-day old females begin to oviposit, but at 20°C egg maturation is observed in 98% of females feeding on liver and in only 5% of females feeding on fish. On the liver diet, the mean daily fecundity is significantly correlated with the day of oviposition but not with the temperature. At 20°C a significant correlation is observed between the mean daily fecundity and both the day of oviposition and food. The total number of eggs laid by flies after feeding on fish is half that produced after feeding on liver. The optimal conditions for Calliphora vicina cultivation are a 16-h light day, temperatures within the range from 20 to 25°C, and liver as food.  相似文献

Both direct thermal and maternal photoperiodic effects on diapause induction have been thoroughly investigated in many insect species, while maternal thermal effects have been infrequently studied. We studied the effect of temperature during development of maternal generation on the proportion of diapausing progeny in four species of the genus Trichogramma Westw., minute egg parasitoids, widely used for biological control of lepidopteran pests. The maternal generations were reared at day lengths of 12 and 18 h and temperatures of 17, 20, 25 and 30°C, and their progeny developed under day length of 12 h and temperatures of 13 and 14°C. In T. evanescens and T. piceum, the proportion of diapausing progeny decreased with increasing temperature under all tested photoperiods and thermal regimes of progeny development; the high temperature of 30°C totally averted diapause of progeny. In T. buesi and T. principium, low temperatures of 17 and 20°C resulted in relatively high proportion of diapausing progeny only when the maternal generation developed under short‐day conditions. The threshold of the maternal thermal response varied from 17–18 to 22–23°C. Under field conditions, Trichogramma females are exposed to such high temperatures only during summer, when diapause in their progeny is in any case prevented by the maternal photoperiodic response and by the thermal response of the larvae. We conclude that the maternal thermal effect on diapause induction, although to a different extent, is inherent to Trichogramma species but, at least as suggested by laboratory experiments, it does not play any role in the regulation of seasonal development under natural conditions. However, during mass rearing of Trichogramma wasps, it should be taken into account that high temperature, even when combined with short photoperiod, can avert diapause in the next generation.  相似文献

Abstract Used as an agent in biological control, Trichogramma which has been infected by endosymbiotic bacteria belonging to the genus Wolbachia and inducing the thelytokous mode of reproduction, increases rearing productivity in commercial insectaries. These insectaries can now make use of Trichogramma diapause to spread out and optimise their production. We therefore studied the effect of Wolbachia on the diapause in Trichogramma evanescens. The symbionts show no beneficial or harmful effect on the proportion of emergence in diapausing individuals or on their fecundity. Therefore, infected strains can easily be used in crop protection. On the other hand, low temperatures exert a slightly negative effect on Wolbachia, as detected from the proportion of females in the offspring of symbiotic diapausing females.  相似文献

Climate differences across latitude can result in seasonal constraints and selection on life-history characters. Because Aedes albopictus (Skuse) invaded North America in the mid-1980s, it has spread across a range of ≈14° latitude and populations in the north experience complete adult mortality because of cold winter temperatures that are absent in the south. Life-table experiments were conducted to test for differences in the adult survival and reproductive schedules of Ae. albopictus females from three populations from the northern (Salem, NJ; Springfield, IL; Eureka, MO; ≈39° N) and southern (Palm Beach, Palmetto, Tampa, FL; ≈27-28° N) extremes of the species distribution in North America. There were consistent differences between northern and southern populations in incidence of photoperiodically-induced egg diapause. Under short daylength, diapause eggs constituted twice the proportion of total viable eggs from northern females (81.9-92.1%) than southern females (35.9-42.7%). There were no consistent differences between northern and southern populations in resource allocation between reproduction and maintenance, reproduction over time, and reproductive investment among offspring, and no apparent trade-offs between diapause incidence with reproduction or longevity. Our results suggest that the main response of North American Ae. albopictus to unfavorable winter climates is via the life history strategy of producing diapausing eggs, rather than quantitative variation in reproduction, and that there are no detectable costs to adult survival. Inherent geographic variation in the expression of diapause, consistent with the latitudinal extremes of A. albopictus, indicates evolutionary loss of diapause response in southern populations because of the invasion of A. albopictus in North America.  相似文献

Since cladocerans from the genus Daphnia are known to have evolved several inducible defenses (morphological and life history shifts) against the notostracan predator Triops, we investigated whether hatching was also altered in response to Triops. We tested whether dormant eggs of Daphnia magna are able to detect Triops cancriformis kairomones in the water as a signal of predation pressure and alter their hatching response accordingly to avoid predation. We predicted that, in the presence of Triops kairomones, hatching fractions might be reduced (postponing hatching to a next growing season) and/or that hatching might peak earlier (increasing chances to reproduce before Triops becomes predatory). We also tested whether this response depended on the origin of the population. Ephippia from three D. magna populations, originating from one permanent lake and two temporary pond systems, were exposed to Triops kairomone and control treatments. We observed significant population differences in hatching patterns, both in terms of the fraction of eggs that hatch as well as the timing of hatching, with evidence for within-season bet-hedging through delayed hatching in the populations inhabiting temporary habitats. However, no indication was found that the populations also adjust their hatching pattern to the presence of Triops kairomones.  相似文献

The ability to change the reproduction mode and produce diapausing eggs, which is prevalent in many zooplankton species, significantly impacts on the evolution and ecology of aquatic communities. The production of diapausing eggs is controlled by multiple effects of biotic and abiotic factors, including infochemicals. We have investigated the effects of chemicals exuded by conspecifics and ecologically close competing congers, Moina brachiata and M. macrocopa, which coexist in the same water body, and by larger Cladocera species (Daphnia magna) on the change of reproduction mode, specific growth rate and fecundity of M. brachiata and M. macrocopa females. The production of gametogenetic eggs in both species was detected only in waters from crowded cultures of conspecifics. The water from crowded cultures of conspecifics reduced the specific growth rate of the juvenile females of both species that later switched to gametogenesis. While it either did not affect (in M. macrocopa) or even increase (in M. brachiata) the specific growth rate of the juvenile females that later reproduced by parthenogenesis. Females of M. macrocopa released significantly fewer neonates in the water from crowded cultures of conspecifics than in all other treatments, while the fecundity of M. brachiata females was the same in all treatments. To understand the phenomenon of diapause induction under the effect of chemical cues in zooplankton, a link between laboratory tests and ecological research should be established, and the chemical composition of the signals should be determined.  相似文献

The timing of springtime production of diapausing eggs by a population of the freshwater copepod, Diaptomus sanguineus, has been shown previously to be consistent with avoidance of seasonally intense fish predation. Natural selection acting on the timing of diapause fluctuates between years depending upon the population density of fish. Here we show that, in the field, the mean timing of diapause shifts between years in response to fluctuations in selection. Diapause is earlier in years following high predator density, and is later in years following low predator density. Although selection intensity in individual years may be large, the mean intensity over the decade of fluctuating selection investigated here is close to zero. Photoperiod sensitivity of the diapausetiming trait is heritable in the laboratory. The combination of fluctuating selection and multi-generation storage of genotypes as diapausing eggs in lake sediments may contribute to the maintenance of the genetic variation that permits the rapid selection response seen in the field.  相似文献

Field experiments conducted in the environs of St. Petersburg (Russia) with a local population of Calliphora vicina showed that induction of larval diapause under natural conditions was significantly dependent on day lengths and temperature. The maternal photoperiodic response had a distinct threshold: the first diapausing larvae hatched from the eggs laid in the middle of August when the day length was 16 h; at shorter photoperiods, the fraction of diapausing larvae depended only on temperature. At the mean temperature of 16°C, larval diapause was rarely recorded; at 12–13°C, about 50% of the larvae entered diapause; at 7–9°C, nearly all the larvae entered diapause. These results of the field experiments agree well with the parameters of photoperiodic and thermal responses studied in the laboratory at constant temperatures and photoperiods.  相似文献
