We examined peripheral and central nervous cues underlying the ability of the bushcricket Leptophyes punctatissima to orient to elevated and depressed sound sources broadcasting the female acoustic reply. The peripheral spatial directionality of the ear was measured physiologically using monaural preparations of an auditory interneuron (T-fibre). In the azimuth, maximal interaural intensity differences of 18 dB occur between ipsi- and contralateral stimulation. With increasing elevation or depression of the sound sources, IIDs decrease systematically and reach zero with the source exactly above or below the preparation. Bilateral, simultaneous recordings of the activity of the pair of interneurons allowed determining the binaural discharge differences which occur in response to the extremely short (1 ms) female reply. These discharge differences are large (four action potentials/stimulus) and reliable in the azimuth with lateral stimulation, and decrease gradually with more frontal stimulation. With elevation and depression of sound sources these differences again decrease to one action potential/stimulus at 60° or 75° elevation, and lateral stimulus angles of about 60°. We also calculated the reliability with which a receiver could correctly determine the location of the sound source. We discuss these quantitative measures in relation to the spatial phonotactic behaviour of male L. punctatissima.  相似文献

Birds that nest in cavities may regulate nest microclimate by orienting their nest entrance relative to the sun or prevailing winds. Alternatively, birds may orient their nest entrance relative to conspecific individuals around them, especially if the acoustic properties of cavities permit nesting birds to better hear individuals in front of their nest. We measured the cavity entrance orientation of 132 nests and 234 excavations in a colour‐banded population of black‐capped chickadees Poecile atricapillus for which the reproductive behaviour of nesting females was known. Most chickadees excavated cavities in rotten birch Betula papyrifera, aspen Populus tremuloides and maple Acer saccharum. Nest cavities showed random compass orientation around 360° demonstrating that chickadees do not orient their cavities relative to the sun or prevailing winds. We also presented chickadees with nest boxes arranged in groups of four, oriented at 90° intervals around the same tree. Nests constructed in these nest box quartets also showed random compass orientation. To test the acoustic properties of nest cavities, we conducted a sound transmission experiment using a microphone mounted inside a chickadee nest. Re‐recorded songs demonstrate that chickadee nest cavities have directional acoustic properties; songs recorded with the cavity entrance oriented towards the loudspeaker were louder than songs recorded with the cavity entrance oriented away from the loudspeaker. Thus, female chickadees, who roost inside their nest cavity in the early morning during their fertile period, should be better able to hear males singing the dawn chorus in front of their nest cavity. Using GIS analyses we tested for angular‐angular correlation between actual nest cavity orientation and the azimuth from the nest tree to the territories and nest cavities of nearby males. In general, nest cavity entrances showed no angular‐angular correlation with neighbourhood territory features. However, among birds who followed a mixed reproductive strategy and nested in the soft wood of birch and aspen trees, nest cavity entrances were oriented towards their extra‐pair partners. We conclude that nest cavity orientation in birds may be influenced by both ecological and social factors.  相似文献

The precedence effect refers to a group of auditory phenomena related to the ability to locate sound sources in reverberant environments. In the present study, this phenomenon was investigated using two moving signals. The first signal was direct (lead) and the other was delayed (lag). The motion of the sound source was created by successive switching of ten loudspeakers. The continuity of the motion was created by simultaneously attenuating the stimulus in the previous loudspeaker and enhancing it in the next one. The length of the path of the lead and lag was 34°. The lead moved from 34° to 0° (to the right) and the lag moved –52° to –86° (to the left). The duration of the lead and the lag was 1 s. Lead–lag delays ranged from 1 to 40 ms. Subjects had to indicate the location of the lag. The results indicate that the lead signal dominated in the sound localization at short delay durations (up to 18 ms). In spite of the instructions, all the subjects pointed at the lead, which suggests that they perceived the lag in this location. Two distinct sounds were perceived at the longest delays. The mean echo threshold and its standard deviation in eight subjects was 9.6 ± 4.5 ms.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Females of the parasitoid fly Emblemasoma auditrix find their host cicadas ( Okanagana rimosa ) using the acoustic signals produced by the host. The phonotactic behaviour of the parasitoid was studied with regard to differently structured habitats.
2. Habitats were modified experimentally within a distance of 2.5 m (approximately the natural range of phonotaxis) from a loudspeaker broadcasting a model of the host calling song.
3. Video analysis showed that in an open habitat (no landmarks) more than 60% of the flies performed a direct flight towards the loudspeaker.
4. In structured habitats (with one to three landmarks) more than 90% of the flies landed on their way to the acoustic target.
5. In about 50% of the landings flies paused for several seconds indicating re-orientation during that time. Several flies included sequences of walking in their approach behaviour, whereby most walking occurred close to the loudspeaker.
6. In summary, the phonotactic approach and host finding depends on the habitat structure.  相似文献

Many species of acoustically interacting insects live in a complex, arboreal or semi-arboreal habitat. Thus mate finding by phonotaxis requires sound localization in the horizontal and vertical plane. Here we investigated the ability of the duetting bushcricket Leptophyes punctatissima to orient to one of three speakers, positioned at different levels in an artificial grid system, where each point in space could be reached by the male with almost equal probability. The system was designed analogous to a spherical calotte model of bismuth, where, once the male arrived at any nodal point had to decide between only three directions: either up or down and/or left and right. This design does not favour any phonotactic path of the males. All 12 males tested reached the three speaker positions (one in the horzontal plane, one elevated by 45°, one depressed by 45° relative to the starting position) with only little deviation from the shortest possible path. There was no significant difference with respect to the whole phonotactic time needed, the number of segments passed, or the number of stimuli received for the different speaker positions. This remarkable spatial orientation is achieved although the insects have no specialized external ear structures such as mammals, or some owls.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effect of leg flexion angle on the relationship between mechanomyographic (MMG) amplitude and isometric torque production. Adult males (n = 9) performed isometric muscle actions of the leg extensors at 25, 50, 75, and 100 percent maximal voluntary contraction (%MVC) on a calibrated CYBEX 6000 dynamometer at 25, 50, and 75° below full extension. A piezoelectric MMG recording device was placed over the mid-portion of the rectus femoris. At 25° of leg flexion, the MMG amplitude increased to 100%MVC. At 50 and 75° of leg flexion, however, MMG amplitude increased to 75%MVC, and then did not change significantly (P > 0.05) between 75 and 100%MVC. These findings indicate that the MMG amplitude-isometric torque relationship is joint angle specific and may be the result of leg flexion angle differences in: (1) muscle stiffness, or (2) motor unit activation strategies. Desert ants (Cataglyphis fortis) navigate by means of path integration, and perform accurately even in undulating terrain. They are able to correctly calculate the ground distance between nest and feeder even if their foraging excursion leads them over corrugated surfaces. To compute the respective ground projection when walking over an inclined surface, ants must measure its slope with sufficient accuracy—but how they do so is still not understood. Using a new behavioural assay that included a negative reinforcement, we investigated how well different slopes are discriminated by the ants. Ants were trained to visit an elevated feeder, via a ramp of fixed inclination (five training inclinations were used: 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°). The ants discriminated a steeper test slope that differed from the training slope by 12.5°. This discrimination performance was found to be constant for training slopes between 0° and 45°. Ants trained on a 60° slope, however, did not discriminate all steeper slopes, up to a vertical ascent, from the 60° inclination. The consequences of this discrimination accuracy for errors in the path integration process are discussed.  相似文献

A chemical attractive to their males is emitted by females of Heterodera rostochiensis and H. schachtii. The attraction is evident in agar plates when the females have been killed or removed from the agar, and on 3 mm. thick agar it takes more than 15 min. at 20° C. to diffuse sufficiently to be perceptible to males 5 mm. from the females. The perception is gustatory and seems to elicit klinokinetic aggregation behaviour and klinotaxic orientation. The males respond to a decrease in stimulation by stopping, followed by either a reversal and turn, or a swing and turn. Fatigue of the receptors, leading to loss of acuity of perception, occurs at greater concentrations of the attractant and decreases the frequency of turning. Then the intensity of turning increases and the approach to the female is less well orientated. Females of H. schachtii secreted a less labile or more concentrated attractant; thus their males were more frequently less well orientated and removal of the females caused more direct attraction. Male behaviour was efficient enough to ensure mating even of isolated females.  相似文献

Vibrational communication is important for successful mating in various stink bugs species. The vibrational signals from males and females of Dichelops melacanthus Dallas (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) are recorded from a nonresonant substrate (i.e. a loudspeaker membrane) to characterize the temporal and spectral properties of these vibrational signals, as well as on a resonant substrate (i.e. bean plants) to obtain information about how these signals are altered when they are transmitted through the plants. On the loudspeaker membrane, D. melacanthus males and females emit only one male or one female song, respectively. However, when the insects are placed on bean leaves, a more complex repertoire is recorded, with three different songs for each sex. The first female and male songs appear to have calling functions and the third male and female songs are emitted during courtship. The second female and male songs are emitted after the first song, although their functions in mating behaviour are not clear. The identified repertoire is similar to those of other Neotropical stink bugs, starting with songs 1 and 2 and developing into song 3. Frequency modulation is observed in the female songs recorded from the loudspeaker membrane and the plants. The signals recorded from plants present higher harmonic peaks compared with the signals recorded from the loudspeaker membrane. The presence of species and sex‐specific songs during mating confirms the important role of vibrational communication in mate location and recognition. The temporal and spectral characteristic signals are influenced by the substrate used to record the songs emitted by D. melacanthus.  相似文献

Synopsis Ninespine stickleback, Pungitius pungitius, and golden shiner, Notemigonus crysoleucas, were exposed at 5 and 20°C to 0, 15, 75 and 150 JTU (Jackson Turbidity Units) of suspended sediments. Fish were tested in a trough inclined at 2.3° with an inflow rate of 27 ml sec-1. Changes in swimming behaviour were only noted for golden shiner and at 20°C and 15, 75 and 150 JTU. Under these conditions golden shiners were more active, changing from location to location in the apparatus significantly more often at higher than at lower concentrations of suspended sediments. This behaviour is compatible with a fleeing response from a stress inducing agent.  相似文献

The angle at which an organ is maintained by gravit-ropism is characteristic of the organ, its developmental state and the prevailing environmental conditions. We propose that this angle be called the gravitropic set-point angle (GSA), defined as the angle with respect to the gravity vector (with a vertically downward orientation being 0°) at which an organ is maintained as a consequence of gravitropism. Studies of the gravitropic behaviour of organs from trailing plants show that the GSA is subject to developmental regulation. Depending on the developmental age and prevailing environmental conditions, the GSA of an organ can he set at any value between 0° and 180° The previously reported reversal of the sign of the gravitropic response in such organs, whether this is brought about developmentally or induced by light, represents the change from one common extreme (GSA = 180°, conventionally referred to as negative orthogravitropism) to another (GSA = 0°, or positive orthogravitropism). The concept of a variable gravitropic set-point offers a more unified view of all forms of gravitropic behaviour than has been advanced previously, and places a new constraint on models of gravitropism. Current models of gravitropism appear to be unable to explain either the ability of organs to change their orientation with respect to gravity as they develop, or the re-orientation that can be observed when some organs are exposed to new environmental conditions.  相似文献

PurposeWe assessed fascicle behaviors of the upper extremities during isometric contractions at different joint angles in this study.MethodsThirteen healthy men and women performed isometric elbow extension tasks at 50% and 75% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) at 60°, 90°, and 120° of elbow extension (full extension = 180°). Extended field-of-view B-mode ultrasonography was used to obtain sagittal plane panoramic images of the long head (TB-Long) and medial head (TB-Med) of the triceps brachii at rest and during contraction; fascicle length and pennation angle were measured.ResultsIn the TB-Long, significant fascicle shortening from rest was found during 50% and 75%MVC at 60° and during 75%MVC at 90° of extension. There was no significant fascicle shortening in the TB-Med muscle under any conditions. There was no significant pennation angle change from rest in either muscle. The pennation angle of the TB-Long was significantly greater than that of the TB-Med under all conditions.ConclusionsThese results suggest that fascicle shortening in the TB-Long muscle occurs in flexion; however, no change was found in the TB-Med. In the upper extremity muscle–tendon complex, the superficial and deeper muscles may have different force-transmission efficiency at flexed joint angles.  相似文献

Individuals often differ consistently in behaviour across time and contexts, and such consistent behavioural differences are commonly described as personality. Personality can play a central role in social behaviour both in dyadic interactions and in social networks. We investigated whether explorative behaviour, as proxy of personality of territorial male great tits (Parus major), predicts their own and their neighbours'' territorial responses towards simulated intruders. Several weeks prior to playback, subjects were taken from the wild to test their exploratory behaviour in a standard context in the laboratory. Exploratory behaviour provides a proxy of personality along a slow–fast explorer continuum. Upon release, males were radio-tracked and subsequently exposed to interactive playback simulating a more or a less aggressive territorial intruder (by either overlapping or alternating broadcast songs with the subjects'' songs). At the same time, we radio-tracked a neighbour of the playback subject. Male vocal responses during playback and spatial movements after playback varied according to male explorative behaviour and playback treatment. Males with lower exploration scores approached the loudspeaker less, and sang more songs, shorter songs and songs with slower element rates than did males with higher exploration scores. Moreover, neighbour responses were related to the explorative behaviour of the subject receiving the playback but not to their own explorative behaviour. Our overall findings reveal for the first time how personality traits affect resource defence within a communication network providing new insights on the cause of variation in resource defence behaviour.  相似文献

Interactive playback experiments were used to study the signal value to the corn bunting, Miliaria calandra, of alternating and overlapping singing. We subjected 15 males to two stimuli that differed in the temporal pattern of song playback (alternating or overlapping). We measured eight characteristics of the males’ response in two categories—song output and movements. Overlapping and alternating playback elicited a similar song response, characteristic of highly aroused males. Song response correlated positively with males’ singing activity before playback, irrespective of stimulus. There were significant differences between latency of approach to the loudspeaker and number of flights. Birds approached the loudspeaker more quickly and spent more time close to it when playback alternated with their songs. The results suggest overlapping song could be interpreted as a stronger threat but elicits a more cautious, rather than stronger, response than the alternating pattern. Males were found to shorten songs during the playback compared with songs sung before and after stimulation. The only predictor of degree of song shortening was song activity before the playback began. It should, therefore, be regarded as a signal which is related to escalated, close-distance counter-singing.  相似文献

Summary The auditory thresholds of three frogs-two subspecies of the genusHyla (H. a. arborea, H. a. savignyi) and one of the genusRana (R. r. ridibunda)—were measured at 5°, 12°, 20° and 28°C, by recording multi-unit activity from the torus semicircularis. In the tree frogs, the upper limit of the audible range is 7,000 Hz. At 5°C the best frequency is 3,000 Hz; the threshold (expressed in dB SPL in all cases) at this frequency is 49 dB (males) and 43 dB (females) forH. a. arborea and 42 dB (males) and 48 dB (females) forH. a. savignyi. At 12°C the thresholds are lower, and they are lower still at 20°, reaching a minimum, at 3,000 Hz, of 42 dB (males) and 38 dB (females) forH. a. arborea and 41 dB (males) and 40 dB (females) forH. a. savignyi. At frequencies of 1,000 Hz and lower, thresholds are high at 5°C; in part of this range they are considerably lowered at 20°C, whereas at 28°C there is a reduction in sensitivity to most frequencies inH. a. arborea, amounting to more than 10 dB in the males.H. a. savignyi differs in this regard; at 28° sensitivity is no less than at lower temperatures, and in fact is greater in the range 1,000–1,400 Hz. The audible range ofR. r. ridibunda is more restricted than that of the tree frogs, but it is more sensitive within this range. The highest frequency is 4,500 Hz. At 5°C the thresholds of the males are lowest at 500–600 Hz (42 dB) and 1,400–1,900 Hz (ca. 39 dB). The best frequencies of the females are 700 Hz (38 dB) and 1,400 Hz (36 dB). At 12°C the thresholds at 300 Hz and 1,000 Hz are markedly lowered, by 10–18 dB. The thresholds of the females at 20°C are still lower over almost the entire audible range, whereas in the males only part of the range is affected. This difference persists at 28°C, the threshold curve of the males being slightly raised, while that of the females is unchanged. Latencies are dependent upon temperature and sound pressure. With a rise in temperature from 5° to 20°C the latency falls by ca. 8 ms. An increase in sound pressure from 5 dB to 30 dB SPL shortens the latency by ca. 10 ms. ABSTRACT. Positive phonotaxis to tape recorded conspecific song by males of the katydid Neoconocephalus affinis (Beauvois) (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) was studied in the field, in Puerto Rico. N.affinis males stridulated loudly during evening hours, and most males were territorial. Aggression between neighbours occurred, albeit rarely, and playback experiments using tape recordings of N.affinis song showed that aggressive behaviour, in the form of jumps directed toward a loudspeaker, could be elicited from a male by song broadcast above a threshold sound intensity. Response thresholds for different males varied from 76 to 93 dB, intensities that corresponded to calculated inter-neighbour distances of 1.6-0.26 m, respectively. Insects that had lower response thresholds were on average more isolated from neighbours and also stridulated more persistently and at a higher sound intensity than insects with higher response thresholds. N.affinis males displayed no phonotaxis toward the song of Neoconocephalus maxillosus , a sympatric species whose song is similar to that of N.affinis in principal frequency but differs in wingstroke rate. Phonotaxis toward conspecific song could only be elicited from males while they were silent.  相似文献

The influence of female and male cues on the male searching behavior of the sheep tick, Ixodes ricinus (Acari: Ixodidae), was studied under constant laboratory conditions by means of a computerized video tracking system. Males were released into an open glass arena in which one half had been exposed for 1 h to 5 freely walking unfed females or five males. The obtained track data were analyzed to reveal if male walking pattern was random or affected by cues of conspecifics left on the arena surface. The results showed that males spent significantly more time and walked a significantly longer distance in the area with female cues compared to the control area. Moreover, the walking path of males was more tortuous on the cues half than the control half. In contrast, walking behavior of males was not affected by male cues in any observed parameter. These results provide the first evidence that unfed females leave sex-specific semiochemicals on a substrate during their walk and that these cues have an effect on male searching behavior. Since this effect was not observed when female cues were 24-h old, the semiochemicals seem to either evaporate or are subject to degradation. The biological significance of these findings for mate-searching in I. ricinus males is discussed.  相似文献

During vocal contests, animals alter both the timing and the patterning of responses to their opponents. Time-specific responses (such as overlapping an opponent's song) and pattern-specific responses (such as matching the type of an opponent's song) may reveal information about interacting animals. Here we explore the consequences of overlapping and frequency matching during song contests of male black-capped chickadees, Poecile atricapillus. Using interactive playback, we engaged birds of high and low dominance status in vocal interactions with a simulated territorial intruder. The playback intruder either overlapped or avoided overlapping the subjects' songs and either matched or avoided matching the frequency of the subjects' songs. Individuals who were overlapped by the playback intruder showed higher variability in their song length and song timing than individuals who were not overlapped. Individuals who were frequency-matched by the playback intruder responded with more agitated responses (more flights and passes over the speaker and closer distances of closest approach) and spent more time farther away from the loudspeaker. We argue that the timing of song delivery and the choice of song type are distinct functional components of vocal interactions, where overlapping and matching songs are threatening signals that have separate consequences for opponent behaviour and song performance. High-ranking males responded at greater distances from the loudspeaker in all treatments and responded with lower agitation levels than low-ranking males. We demonstrate that males of different quality show different behavioural responses to territorial intruders, where males of high status appear reluctant to engage an intruder as intensely as males of low status.  相似文献

Ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) are designed to improve gait for individuals with neuromuscular conditions and have also been used to reduce energy costs of walking for unimpaired individuals. AFOs influence joint motion and metabolic cost, but how they impact muscle function remains unclear. This study investigated the impact of different stiffness AFOs on medial gastrocnemius muscle (MG) and Achilles tendon (AT) function during two walking speeds. We performed gait analyses for eight unimpaired individuals. Each individual walked at slow and very slow speeds with a 3D printed AFO with no resistance (free hinge condition) and four levels of ankle dorsiflexion stiffness: 0.25 Nm/°, 1 Nm/°, 2 Nm/°, and 3.7 Nm/°. Motion capture, ultrasound, and musculoskeletal modeling were used to quantify MG and AT lengths with each AFO condition. Increasing AFO stiffness increased peak AFO dorsiflexion moment with decreased peak knee extension and peak ankle dorsiflexion angles. Overall musculotendon length and peak AT length decreased, while peak MG length increased with increasing AFO stiffness. Peak MG activity, length, and velocity significantly decreased with slower walking speed. This study provides experimental evidence of the impact of AFO stiffness and walking speed on joint kinematics and musculotendon function. These methods can provide insight to improve AFO designs and optimize musculotendon function for rehabilitation, performance, or other goals.  相似文献
