Objective: Observational study designed to determine weight outcomes and associated dietary intake patterns for a sample of participants ≥1 year after completing the University of Alabama at Birmingham EatRight Weight Management Program. Research Methods and Procedures: Seventy‐four former participants (64% women) completed follow‐up visits ≥1 year after participating in EatRight, which promotes low‐energy density, high‐complex carbohydrate foods. Weight maintenance was defined as gaining <5% of body weight since completion of the EatRight program and staying below their program entry weight. Those who gained ≥5% of their body weight since completion were classified as gainers. Results: During EatRight, participants of the follow‐up study lost an average of 4.0 kg. After a mean follow‐up time of 2.2 years, the average weight change was +0.59 kg (mean BMI, 32.5 kg/m2). Seventy‐eight percent of participants gained <5% of their body weight; 46% had no weight regain or continued weight loss. Unadjusted mean intake for maintainers was 1608 kcal, whereas calorie intake for gainers was 1989 kcal. Despite eating slightly fewer calories (adjusted difference, 244; p = 0.058), maintainers ate a similar amount of food, resulting in a lower energy‐density pattern (p = 0.016) compared with those who regained ≥5% of body weight. Gainers also reported consuming larger portions of several food groups. Discussion: Our results indicate that low‐energy‐density eating habits are associated with long‐term weight maintenance. Those who maintain weight after the EatRight program consume a low‐energy‐density dietary pattern and smaller portions of food groups potentially high in energy density than those who regain weight.  相似文献

Objective: To develop a model based on empirical data and human energetics to predict the total energy cost of weight gain and obligatory increase in energy intake and/or decrease in physical activity level associated with weight gain in children and adolescents. Research Methods and Procedures: One‐year changes in weight and body composition and basal metabolic rate (BMR) were measured in 488 Hispanic children and adolescents. Fat‐free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) were measured by DXA and BMR by calorimetry. Model specifications include the following: body mass (BM) = FFM + FM, each with a specific energy content, cff (1.07 kcal/g FFM) and cf (9.25 kcal/g FM), basal energy expenditure (EE), kff and kf, and energetic conversion efficiency, eff (0.42) for FFM and ef (0.85) for FM. Total energy cost of weight gain is equal to the sum of energy storage, EE associated with increased BM, conversion energy (CE), and diet‐induced EE (DIEE). Results: Sex‐ and Tanner stage–specific values are indicated for the basal EE of FFM (kff) and the fat fraction in added tissue (fr). Total energy cost of weight gain is partitioned into energy storage (24% to 36%), increase in EE (40% to 57%), CE (8% to 13%), and DIEE (10%). Observed median (10th to 90th percentile) weight gain of 6.1 kg/yr (2.4 to 11.4 kg/yr) corresponds at physical activity level (PAL) = 1.5, 1.75, and 2.0 to a total energy cost of weight gain of 244 (93 to 448 kcal/d), 267 (101 to 485 kcal/d), and 290 kcal/d (110 to 527 kcal/d), respectively, and to a total energy intake of 2695 (1890 to 3730), 3127 (2191 to 4335), and 3551 (2487 to 4930) kcal/d, respectively. If weight gain is caused by a change in PAL alone and PAL0 = 1.5 at baseline t = 0, the model indicates a drop in PAL of 0.22 (0.08 to 0.34) units, which is equivalent to 60 (18 to 105) min/d of walking at 2.5 mph. Discussion: Halting the development or progression of childhood obesity, as observed in these Hispanic children and adolescents, by counteracting its total energy costs will require a sizable decrease in energy intake and/or reciprocal increase in physical activity.  相似文献

Objective: A previous study showed that increasing the portion sizes of all foods led to an increase in energy intake that was sustained over 2 days. The objective of the present study was to determine whether participants would compensate for excess energy intake or continue to overeat when portion sizes were increased for 11 days. Research Methods and Procedures: Participants in the study were 23 normal‐weight and overweight participants (10 women and 13 men). All of their foods and caloric beverages were provided during two different periods of 11 consecutive days, which were separated by a 2‐week interval. During one period, standard portions of all items were served; during the other, all portion sizes were increased by 50%. Results: The 50% increase in portion sizes resulted in a mean increase in daily energy intake of 423 ± 27 kcal (p < 0.0001), which did not differ significantly between women and men. This increase was sustained for 11 days and did not decline significantly over time, leading to a mean cumulative increase in intake of 4636 ± 532 kcal. A significant effect of portion size on intake was seen at all meals and in all categories of foods except fruit (as a snack) and vegetables. The effect of portion size on intake was not influenced by the body weight status of participants. Discussion: These results strengthen the evidence suggesting that increased portions contribute to the overconsumption of energy and to excess body weight.  相似文献

Objective: To determine whether the consumption of water 30 minutes before an ad libitum meal reduces meal energy intake in young and older adults. Research Methods and Procedures: Healthy, non‐obese young (n = 29; age, 21 to 35 years) and older (n = 21; age, 60 to 80 years) individuals were provided with an ad libitum lunch meal on two occasions. Thirty minutes before the lunch meals, subjects were given either a water preload (WP: 375 mL, women; 500 mL, men) or no preload (NP). Energy intake at the two lunch meals was measured. Visual analog scales were used to assess changes in hunger, fullness, and thirst during the meal studies. Results: There was no significant difference in meal energy intake between conditions in the young subjects (892 + 51 vs. 913 ± 54 kcal for NP and WP, respectively; p = 0.65). However, meal energy intake after the WP was significantly reduced relative to the NP condition in the older subjects (682 + 53 vs. 624 ± 56 kcal for NP and WP, respectively; p = 0.02). This effect was caused primarily by the reduction in meal energy intake after water consumption in older men. Hunger ratings were lower and fullness ratings were higher in older compared with younger adults (p < 0.01). Fullness ratings were higher in the WP condition compared with the NP condition for all subjects (p = 0.01). No age differences in thirst were detected during the test meals. Discussion: Under acute test meal conditions, pre‐meal water consumption reduces meal energy intake in older but not younger adults. Because older adults are at increased risk for overweight and obesity, intervention studies are needed to determine whether pre‐meal water consumption is an effective long‐term weight management strategy for the aging population.  相似文献

Objective: It is unclear if resting metabolic rate (RMR) and spontaneous physical activity (SPA) decrease in weight‐reduced non‐obese participants. Additionally, it is unknown if changes in SPA, measured in a respiratory chamber, reflect changes in free‐living physical activity level (PAL). Research Methods and Procedures: Participants (N = 48) were randomized into 4 groups for 6 months: calorie restriction (CR, 25% restriction), CR plus structured exercise (CR+EX, 12.5% restriction plus 12.5% increased energy expenditure via exercise), low‐calorie diet (LCD, 890 kcal/d supplement diet until 15% weight loss, then weight maintenance), and control (weight maintenance). Measurements were collected at baseline, Month 3, and Month 6. Body composition and RMR were measured by DXA and indirect calorimetry, respectively. Two measures of SPA were collected in a respiratory chamber (percent of time active and kcal/d). Free‐living PAL (PAL = total daily energy expenditure by doubly labeled water/RMR) was also measured. Regression equations at baseline were used to adjust RMR for fat‐free mass and SPA (kcal/d) for body weight. Results: Adjusted RMR decreased at Month 3 in the CR group and at Month 6 in the CR+EX and LCD groups. Neither measure of SPA decreased significantly in any group. PAL decreased at Month 3 in the CR and LCD groups, but not in the CR+EX group, who engaged in structured exercise. Changes in SPA in the chamber and free‐living PAL were not related. Discussion: Body weight is defended in non‐obese participants during modest caloric restriction, evidenced by metabolic adaptation of RMR and reduced energy expenditure through physical activity.  相似文献

Objective: This study investigated which aspect of energy balance was responsible for the decrease in body fat content of rats fed a high‐calcium, high—dairy protein diet. Research Methods and Procedures: Male Wistar rats were fed a control diet (25% kcal fat, 14% kcal protein from casein, 0.4% by weight calcium) or high‐calcium diet (25% kcal fat, 7% kcal protein from nonfat dry milk, 7% kcal protein from casein, 2.4% calcium) for 85 days. Body weights, digestible energy intakes, energy expenditures, rectal temperatures, body composition, and serum glucose, insulin, free fatty acids, triglycerides, and 1, 25‐dihydroxyvitamin D were measured. Results: Rats fed high‐calcium diet gained significantly less weight than controls and had 29% less carcass fat. Gross energy intake was not significantly different between groups, but digestible energy was 90% of gross energy in the high‐calcium diet compared with 94% in the control diet because of increased fecal excretion of dietary lipid. The difference in digestible energy intake accounted for differences in carcass energy. Body temperatures and energy expenditures of the rats were not different. The high‐calcium diet reduced serum triglycerides by 23% and serum 1, 25‐dihydroxyvitamin D by 86%. Discussion: These results confirm that a high‐calcium diet decreases body weight and fat content due to a lower digestible energy intake caused by increased fecal lipid and a nonsignificant reduction in gross energy intake.  相似文献

Objective: Obesity is a growing problem worldwide, but there are no good methods to assess the future course of the epidemic and the potential influence of interventions. We explore the behavior change needed to stop the obesity epidemic in the U.S. Research Methods and Procedures: We modeled the population distribution of BMI as a log‐normal curve of which the mean shifts upward with time due to a positive population energy balance. Interventions that decrease food intake or increase physical activity result in more favorable trends in BMI. Results: The recently observed trend in average BMI implies that the average U.S. adult over‐consumes by ~10 kcal/d. If this trend continues unaltered, obesity prevalence will exceed 40% for men and 45% for women in 2015. To stop the epidemic, it suffices to decrease caloric consumption by ~10 kcal or walk an extra 2 to 3 minutes per day, on average. Discussion: This leads to a paradox: little behavior change seems sufficient to halt the epidemic, but in practice this proves hard to achieve. The obesogenic environment is the likely culprit. Individuals trying to maintain a healthy weight need to be supported by environments that stimulate physical activity and do not encourage over‐consumption. Research should show what measures are effective.  相似文献

Objective: The influence of dairy product consumption on food intake and appetitive sensations was explored in a cross‐over design study with individuals who were habitually low (<1 serving/d) or high (>3 servings/d) dairy consumers. Research Methods and Procedures: Fifty‐eight participants were required to eat one portion of dairy each day (low dairy) or three portions of dairy each day (high dairy) for 7 days. After a 7‐day washout period, the opposite treatment condition was completed. Food intake and appetitive ratings were measured on each day of the treatment periods. Results: During the high‐dairy period, participants consumed 209 kcal/d more than during the low dairy period (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in subjective appetite ratings. Habitual dairy use did not influence either the appetitive or dietary findings. Discussion: These data indicate that increasing dairy consumption may lead to increased energy intake, which could potentially cause weight gain.  相似文献

Objective: African American women have a high prevalence of obesity, which partially may be explained by their lower rates of resting energy expenditure (REE). The aim of this study was to examine the influence of acute sibutramine administration on REE and post‐exercise energy expenditure in African American women. Research Methods and Procedures: A total of 15 premenopausal, African American women (age, 29 ± 5 years; body fat, 38 ± 7%) completed a randomized, double‐blind cross‐over design with a 30‐mg ingestion of sibutramine or a placebo. Each trial was completed a month apart in the follicular phase and included a 30‐minute measurement of REE 2.5 hours after sibutramine or placebo administration. This was followed by 40 minutes of cycling at ~70% of peak aerobic capacity and a subsequent 2‐hour measurement of post‐cycling energy expenditure. Results: There was no difference (p > 0.05) in REE (23.70 ± 2.81 vs. 23.69 ± 2.95 kcal/30 min), exercise oxygen consumption (1.22 ± 0.15 vs. 1.25 ± 0.15 liter/min), and post‐cycling energy expenditure (104.2 ± 12.7 vs. 104.9 ± 11.4 kcal/120 min) between the sibutramine and placebo trials, respectively. Cycling heart rate was significantly higher (p = 0.01) during the sibutramine (158 ± 14 beats/min) vs. placebo (150 ± 12 beats/min) trials. Discussion: These data demonstrate that acute sibutramine ingestion does not increase REE or post‐exercise energy expenditures but does increase exercising heart rate in overweight African American women. Sibutramine may, therefore, impact weight loss through energy intake and not energy expenditure mechanisms.  相似文献

Objective: The objectives were to investigate the characteristics associated with frequent self‐weighing and the relationship between self‐weighing and weight loss maintenance. Research Methods and Procedures: Participants (n = 3003) were members of the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) who had lost ≥30 lbs, kept it off for ≥1 year, and had been administered the self‐weighing frequency assessment used for this study at baseline (i.e., entry to the NWCR). Of these, 82% also completed the one‐year follow‐up assessment. Results: At baseline, 36.2% of participants reported weighing themselves at least once per day, and more frequent weighing was associated with lower BMI and higher scores on disinhibition and cognitive restraint, although both scores remained within normal ranges. Weight gain at 1‐year follow‐up was significantly greater for participants whose self‐weighing frequency decreased between baseline and one year (4.0 ± 6.3 kg) compared with those whose frequency increased (1.1 ± 6.5 kg) or remained the same (1.8 ± 5.3 kg). Participants who decreased their frequency of self‐weighing were more likely to report increases in their percentage of caloric intake from fat and in disinhibition, and decreases in cognitive restraint. However, change in self‐weighing frequency was independently associated with weight change. Discussion: Consistent self‐weighing may help individuals maintain their successful weight loss by allowing them to catch weight gains before they escalate and make behavior changes to prevent additional weight gain. While change in self‐weighing frequency is a marker for changes in other parameters of weight control, decreasing self‐weighing frequency is also independently associated with greater weight gain.  相似文献

Objective: This study evaluated the effects of acute and chronic consumption of higher dietary protein on energy expenditure, macronutrient use, appetite, and appetite‐regulating hormones during weight loss in women. Research Methods and Procedures: Thirty‐eight women chronically consuming a 750 kcal/d energy‐deficit diet with a protein content of 30% (higher protein‐chronic diet, HP‐CD, n = 21) or 18% (normal protein‐chronic diet, NP‐CD, n = 17) for 9 weeks were tested. On separate days, metabolic, appetite, and hormonal responses were measured over 4 hours when the women consumed a higher protein‐acute meal (HP‐AM) (30% of energy as protein) or a normal protein‐acute meal (NP‐AM) (18% of energy as protein). Results: With chronic diet groups combined, HP‐AM led to lower respiratory exchange ratio (0.829 ± 0.005 vs. 0.843 ± 0.008; p < 0.05), lower carbohydrate oxidation (p < 0.05), and higher fat oxidation (p < 0.05) compared with NP‐AM. HP‐AM also led to reduced self‐reported postprandial hunger (p < 0.001) and desire to eat (p < 0.001) and lower postprandial ghrelin (252 ± 16 vs. 274 ± 18 ng/mL · 240 minutes, p < 0.05) compared with NP‐AM. No differences in postprandial energy expenditure (PPEE) occurred between meals. When combining acute meals, respiratory exchange ratio was lower (p < 0.05) and protein oxidation (p < 0.001) was higher in the HP‐CD vs. NP‐CD. An acute meal‐by‐chronic diet interaction was observed with PPEE such that HP‐AM led to greater PPEE in the HP‐CD vs. NP‐CD (28.7 ± 2.7 vs. 19.9 ± 2.7 kcal/min for 195 minutes; p < 0.05). Conclusions: During weight loss, thermogenesis and protein use appear to be influenced by chronic protein intake, while appetite and ghrelin are more responsive to acute protein intake.  相似文献

Objective: Accelerometers offer considerable promise for improving estimates of physical activity (PA) and energy expenditure (EE) in free‐living subjects. Differences in calibration equations and cut‐off points have made it difficult to determine the most accurate way to process these data. The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of various calibration equations and algorithms that are currently used with the MTI Actigraph (MTI) and the Sensewear Pro II (SP2) armband monitor. Research Methods and Procedures: College‐age participants (n = 30) wore an MTI and an SP2 while participating in normal activities of daily living. Activity patterns were simultaneously monitored with the Intelligent Device for Estimating Energy Expenditure and Activity (IDEEA) monitor to provide an accurate estimate (criterion measure) of EE and PA for this field‐based method comparison study. Results: The EE estimates from various MTI equations varied considerably, with mean differences ranging from ?1.10 to 0.46 METS. The EE estimates from the two SP2 equations were within 0.10 METS of the value from the IDEEA. Estimates of time spent in PA from the MTI and SP2 ranged from 34.3 to 107.1 minutes per day, while the IDEEA yielded estimates of 52 minutes per day. Discussion: The lowest errors in estimation of time spent in PA and the highest correlations were found for the new SP2 equation and for the recently proposed MTI cut‐off point of 760 counts/min (Matthews, 2005). The study indicates that the Matthews MTI cut‐off point and the new SP2 equation provide the most accurate indicators of PA.  相似文献

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare weight regain in a group of perimenopausal women (48.0 ± 4.4 years old), randomized to a 12‐month weight maintenance Internet intervention or to self‐directed weight maintenance after a 4‐month weight loss treatment. Methods and Procedures: After a 4‐month behavioral weight loss program, 135 women were randomized to either Internet or self‐directed groups. The Internet group (n = 66) used a website to gain information and complete logs concerning their weight, diet, and exercise progress over a 12‐month follow‐up. The 69 self‐directed women had no contact with study staff. All women were measured for weight and body composition, and diet intake, and were interviewed using the 7‐day physical activity questionnaires at baseline, 4 months, and 16 months. Results: At the end of the 12‐month follow‐up, the Internet and self‐directed groups had regained on average 0.4 ± 5.0 kg and 0.6 ± 4.0 kg, respectively (P = 0.5). In within‐group analyses, Internet diet‐log entries were correlated with follow‐up weight change (r = ?0.29; P < 0.05) and moderately with change in exercise energy expenditure (EEE; r = 0.44; P < 0.01). Follow‐up weight change was not correlated with change in dietary intake. Discussion: While significant weight loss was maintained over follow‐up by both groups of women, Internet use did not surpass self‐direction in helping to sustain weight loss. Among Internet users, Internet use was related to weight change and EEE.  相似文献

Objective: To explore the potential role of the endogenous peptide YY (PYY) in the long‐term regulation of body weight and energy homeostasis. Research Methods and Procedures: Fasting and postprandial plasma PYY concentrations were measured after an overnight fast and 30 to 180 minutes after a standardized meal in 29 (21 men/8 women) non‐diabetic subjects, 16 of whom had a follow‐up visit 10.8 ± 1.4 months later. Ratings of hunger and satiety were collected using visual analog scales. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) (15‐hour RMR) and respiratory quotient (RQ) were assessed using a respiratory chamber. Results: Fasting PYY concentrations were negatively correlated with various markers of adiposity and negatively associated with 15‐hour RMR (r = ?0.46, p = 0.01). Postprandial changes in PYY (area under the curve) were positively associated with postprandial changes in ratings of satiety (r = 0.47, p = 0.01). The maximal PYY concentrations achieved after the meal (peak PYY) were negatively associated with 24‐hour RQ (r = ?0.41, p = 0.03). Prospectively, the peak PYY concentrations were negatively associated with changes in body weight (r = ?0.58, p = 0.01). Discussion: Our data indicate that the endogenous PYY may be involved in the long‐term regulation of body weight. It seems that this long‐term effect was not exclusively driven by the modulation of food intake but also by the control of energy expenditure and lipid metabolism.  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the predictive efficacy of preoperative resting energy expenditure (REE) on weight loss after vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG). When subjected to a gastric restriction procedure of similar extent, the patients with higher energy expenditure should experience a greater negative energy balance than those with lower‐energy expenditure, and thus, lose more weight, thereby making REE a reliable predictor of weight loss after VBG. Research Methods and Procedures: This was a prospective investigation after VBG, taking into account the relationship between preoperative REE values and the results at 1‐year follow‐up in terms of weight loss and success of the procedure. The correlations were evaluated by multiple and logistic regression analysis. Results: The weight loss and the outcome at 1 year after VBG seemed to be completely independent of preoperative energy expenditure. Discussion: These findings suggest that, despite gastric restriction, patients may voluntarily adjust their energy intake, and that the weight outcome after VBG is influenced more by behavioral and cognitive variables than by biological or surgical factors.  相似文献

Objective: To examine the effects of dietary protein and obesity classification on energy‐restriction‐induced changes in weight, body composition, appetite, mood, and cardiovascular and kidney health. Research Methods and Procedures: Forty‐six women, ages 28 to 80, BMI 26 to 37 kg/m2, followed a 12‐week 750‐kcal/d energy‐deficit diet containing higher protein (HP, 30% protein) or normal protein (NP, 18% protein) and were retrospectively subgrouped according to obesity classification [pre‐obese (POB), BMI = 26 to 29.9 kg/m2; obese (OB), BMI = 30 to 37 kg/m2). Results: All subjects lost weight, fat mass, and lean body mass (LBM; p < 0.001). With comparable weight loss, LBM losses were less in HP vs. NP (?1.5 ± 0.3 vs. ?2.8 ± 0.5 kg; p < 0.05) and POB vs. OB (?1.2 ± 0.3 vs. ?2.9 ± 0.4 kg; p < 0.005). The main effects of protein and obesity on LBM changes were independent and additive; POB‐HP lost less LBM vs. OB‐NP (p < 0.05). The energy‐restriction‐induced decline in satiety was less pronounced in HP vs. NP (p < 0.005). Perceived pleasure increased with HP and decreased with NP (p < 0.05). Lipid‐lipoprotein profile and blood pressure improved and kidney function minimally changed with energy restriction (p < 0.05), independently of protein intake. Discussion: Consuming a higher‐protein diet and accomplishing weight loss before becoming obese help women preserve LBM. Use of a higher‐protein diet also improves perceptions of satiety and pleasure during energy restriction.  相似文献

Objective: Determine whether sleeping and resting energy expenditure and sleeping, resting, and 24‐hour fuel use distinguish obesity‐prone from obesity‐resistant women and whether these metabolic factors explain long‐term weight gain. Research Methods and Procedures: Forty‐nine previously overweight but currently normal‐weight women were compared with 49 never‐overweight controls. To date, 87% of the 98 women have been re‐evaluated after 1 year of follow‐up, without intervention, and 38% after 2 years. Subjects were studied at a General Clinical Research Center after 4 weeks of tightly controlled conditions of energy balance and macronutrient intake. Forty‐nine obesity‐prone weight‐reduced women were group‐matched with 49 never‐overweight obesity‐resistant controls. All were premenopausal, sedentary, and normoglycemic. Energy expenditure and fuel use were assessed using chamber calorimetry. Body composition was assessed using DXA. Results: At baseline, percent body fat was not different between the obesity‐prone and control women (33 ± 4% vs. 32 ± 5%, respectively; p = 0.22). Analysis of covariance results show that after adjusting for lean and fat mass, sleeping and resting energy expenditure of obesity‐prone women was within 2% of controls. Neither sleeping nor resting energy expenditure nor sleeping, resting, or 24‐hour fuel use was significantly different between the groups (p > 0.25). None of the metabolic variables contributed significantly to patterns of weight gain at 1 or 2 years of follow‐up. Discussion: The results suggest that when resting and sleeping energy expenditure and fuel use are assessed under tightly controlled conditions, these metabolic factors do not distinguish obesity‐prone from obesity‐resistant women or explain long‐term weight changes.  相似文献

Objective: To assess the validity of a new hand‐held indirect calorimeter [MedGem (MG)] in the determination of resting energy expenditure (REE; kilocalories per day) in children. Research Methods and Procedures: One hundred male (n = 54) and female (n = 46) children (10.6 ± 3.2 years, 43.9 ± 19.0 kg, 146.1 ± 18.8 cm, 19.6 ± 4.9 kg/m2) participated. Children arrived at the University of Oklahoma body composition laboratory between 5:30 am and 6:15 am after an overnight fast. On arrival, subjects voided and remained quietly in the supine position for 15 minutes before testing. REE was measured by indirect calorimetry (in random order), with both the MG (sitting upright) and the criterion Delta Trac II (DT) (supine). Data are reported as the mean ± standard deviation. Results: The mean MG REE (1452 ± 355 kcal/d) was significantly higher than DT REE (1349 ± 296 kcal/d, p < 0.001). Bland‐Altman analysis revealed a mean bias (MG ? DT) of 104 kcal/d, with limits of agreement of ?241 to +449 kcal/d. To examine the difference in subject positioning, an independent sample of 38 subjects performed the MG in its normal position (sitting) and holding the MG in a supine position. REE by the MG in the sitting position (1475 ± 350 kcal/d) was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than the MG in the supine position (1419 ± 286 kcal/d). Discussion: The mean difference in REE between MG and DT was relatively small (103 kcal/d) but significant; however, a portion of this difference may have been related to differences in subject positioning. These preliminary data indicate that the MG shows promise as a valid tool in the assessment of REE in children.  相似文献

Objective: We examined relationships of eating patterns and reported energy intake (rEI) with BMI percentile in U.S. children. Research Methods and Procedures: Two 24‐hour dietary recalls from the Continuing Surveys of Food Intakes by Individuals 1994 to 1996 and 1998 (1005 boys, 990 girls) were averaged, and children were categorized into three age groups: 3 to 5 years (n = 1077), 6 to 11 years (n = 537), and 12 to 19 years (n = 381). Physiologically implausible reports due to reporting bias or abnormal intake (rEI outside ±18% to 23% of predicted energy requirements; pER) were identified. Results: rEI averaged 109 ± 34% and 100 ± 10% of pER in the total and plausible samples, respectively. EI was overreported more in younger children and underreported more in overweight older children. Children with plausible rEI (45.3% of sample) averaged 4.7 eating occasions/d, 589 kcal/meal, 223 kcal/snack, and 2038 kcal/d. rEI was not associated with BMI percentile in the total sample. In the plausible sample, rEI, meal portion size, and meal energy were positively associated with BMI percentile in boys 6 to 11 years and in children 12 to 19 years. No relationships were found in children 3 to 5 years and girls 6 to 11 years. Relationships were more consistent and stronger in the plausible compared with the total sample. Discussion: Excluding implausible dietary reports may be necessary for discerning dietary associations with BMI percentile. EI and meal, but not snack, patterns may play a quantitatively greater role in weight regulation as children age.  相似文献

Objective: To determine Trp64Arg β3‐adrenoceptor genotype‐specific differences in the components of energy expenditure. Hypothesis: We hypothesized that resting metabolic rate (RMR) and physical activity levels would be lower and that thermic effect of feeding (TEF) would be higher in those with the Arg64 allele. Research Methods and Procedures: RMR and TEF were measured by indirect calorimetry, physical activity by questionnaire, and total energy expenditure by the doubly labeled water method. Genotype‐specific measures were compared using ANOVA and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Results: RMR in Arg64 homozygotes was significantly lower than in Trp64 homozygotes [Arg64, 1373 ± 259 kcal/d (n = 15) vs. Trp64Arg, 1538 ± 238 kcal/d (n = 25) vs. Trp64, 1607 ± 290 kcal/d (n = 22); p < 0.01]. TEF was significantly higher in Arg64 homozygotes compared with Trp64 homozygotes (Arg64, 359 ± 28 kcal/d; Trp64Arg, 322 ± 22 kcal/d; and Trp64, 279 ± 23 kcal/d; p < 0.05). No differences were identified between genotypes in physical activity or in total energy expenditure. Discussion: Our results suggest that the Arg64 β3‐adrenoceptor allele contributes significantly to the genetic variability in both RMR and TEF.  相似文献
