The primary aim of this study was to measure HIV-1 persistence following combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) in infants and children. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) HIV-1 DNA was quantified prior to and after 1 year of cART in 30 children, stratified by time of initiation (early, age <3 months, ET; late, age >3 months-2 years, LT). Pre-therapy PBMC HIV-1 DNA levels correlated with pre-therapy plasma HIV-1 levels (r = 0.59, p<0.001), remaining statistically significant (p = 0.002) after adjustment for prior perinatal antiretroviral exposure and age at cART initiation. PBMC HIV-1 DNA declined significantly after 1 year of cART (Overall: -0.91±0.08 log10 copies per million PBMC, p<0.001; ET: -1.04±0.11 log10 DNA copies per million PBMC, p<0.001; LT: -0.74 ±0.13 log10 DNA copies per million PBMC, p<0.001) but rates of decline did not differ significantly between ET and LT. HIV-1 replication exposure over the first 12 months of cART, estimated as area-under-the-curve (AUC) of circulating plasma HIV-1 RNA levels, was significantly associated with PBMC HIV-1 DNA at one year (r = 0.51, p = 0.004). In 21 children with sustained virologic suppression after 1 year of cART, PBMC HIV-1 DNA levels continued to decline between years 1 and 4 (slope -0.21 log10 DNA copies per million PBMC per year); decline slopes did not differ significantly between ET and LT. PBMC HIV-1 DNA levels at 1 year and 4 years of cART correlated with age at cART initiation (1 year: p = 0.04; 4 years: p = 0.03) and age at virologic control (1 and 4 years, p = 0.02). Altogether, these data indicate that reducing exposure to HIV-1 replication and younger age at cART initiation are associated with lower HIV-1 DNA levels at and after one year of age, supporting the concept that HIV-1 diagnosis and cART initiation in infants should occur as early as possible.  相似文献

A large size variation amongst life histories for stream-dwelling Atlantic salmon Salmo salar was found and the relative effect of life histories on size varied over time. As early as December (age 0+ years), fish that later smolted at age 2+ years were significantly larger than fish that did not smolt at age 2+ years. In contrast, there were no mass differences at age 0+ years between fish that would mature or not at age 1+ years (October). The mass differences between smolts and non-smolts persisted until smolting, and differences between mature and immature fish first appeared in May (age 1+ years). Following September (age 1+ years), there was also a significant interaction between smolting and maturity. Previously mature and immature age 2+ year smolts were not significantly different in size, but immature age 2+ year non-smolts were much lighter than mature age 2+ year non-smolts. Based on mass differences, the apparent 'decision' to smolt occurred c . 5 months before (winter, age 0+ years) the decision to mature (late spring, age 1+ years). In addition to strong seasonal growth variation, sizes of freshwater Atlantic salmon were largely structured by the complex interaction between smolt-age and maturity.  相似文献

On the basis on 6 years of observation, we estimated the reproductive parameters of a Golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) group in the Qinling Mountains, China. We observed 88 births in 47 females from 2001 to 2006. Two methods were used to calculate the birthrate. The first method is based on the number of births observed in a year, giving 0.49+/-0.07 (mean+/-SD), and the second method is based on the female-years of observation, giving 0.49+/-0.17 births per female per year in this troop. The mean interbirth interval is 21.88+/-6.01 months (mean+/-SD). The mortality of infant born between 2002 and 2005 was 22.4%. The interbirth intervals of females that had lost an infant before the age of 6 months were significantly shorter than that of females whose infants survived for more than 6 months. A female usually gives birth once every 2 years if the previous offspring survives to a weaning age of 5-6 months, or will give birth in the next year if the previous young dies before reaching an age of 6 months. Births were significantly concentrated during March to May of each year. The mean birth date was on April 14, median was April 12; and the standard deviation was 13.98 days. Birth peak occurs 6-7 months after mating peak. From observations on 15 individuals that gave birth for the first time, we concluded that the wild female Golden snub-nosed monkeys in Qinling Mountains start giving birth at an age of 5 or 6 years. We suggest that the seasonal reproductive pattern is an adaptive response to the availability of seasonal food. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that these reproductive characteristics are a result of adaptation to the seasonality of mountain climate and food resources.  相似文献

Seasonality in births and fertile matings are reported for a stumptail macaque group living on an island for a period of five years: 1975–1979. During this period 26 births occurred of which 24 represent infants conceived on the island. While births and fertile matings occurred throughout the year 21% of the births were concentrated in March, 34% in June and July and 17% in November. Additionally 63% of the births occurred during the rainy season. Of the 24 infants, 4 died during the first year of life thus yielding a reproductive success of 83%. The sex ratio at birth for the five years was 1:1 corrected to 1:1.2 with the four deaths. The mean interval between fertile matings for females was 19 months and 2 days and the mean age for first conception was 4 years and 5 months. The pattern of birth and breeding seasonality was markedly similar to that of the parent troop while in Puerto Rico.  相似文献

Free-ranging mantled howling monkey (Alouatta palliata Gray) females experienced a regular estrus cycle averaging 16.3 days, demonstrated sexual skin changes, and participated in multiple matings before becoming pregnant. Gestation averaged 186 days. The average interval between births was 22.5 months. Sexual maturity occurred at approximately 36 and 42 months for females and males, respectively. Female age at first birth was about 3½ years. Births were scattered during some years and clustered during others. The age, rank, and parity of the females affected infant survival. More female than male infants survived to one year of age. Increased population size was the result of immigration rather than births.  相似文献

The age and sex structure of the elephant population in Kidepo Valley National Park were studied using recognition files. Moreover, population trends were reviewed using past studies. From 1967 to 2000, the elephant population varied between 200 and 500 individuals. Of the minimum number of 374 elephants found to use the Park, 352 were individually identified. Seventy‐nine per cent of these were recorded in 29 families ranging from three to 22 animals with a mean group size of ten. Young animals dominated the population (45% aged 0–9.9 years), while 11% were 10–14.9 years of age and only 18% over 25 years of age. Overall, males constituted 45% of the population, but only 32% of the individuals in the 10–14.9‐year age class were males. Individuals ≥15 years of age displayed a skewed sex ratio of 1 : 1.4 in favour of females. The extent of skew was greatest among mature animals (≥25 years of age), which had four times as many females as males. The skewed age structure in the year 2000 caused by poaching and drought, led to a significant difference between the age distribution in 1970 and 2000. Recent counts suggest that the Kidepo elephant population may be increasing.  相似文献

Abstract

A campaign to eradicate goats (Capra hircus L.) was begun in August–October 1972 on Raoul Island, Kermadec group, 1000 km north-east of New Zealand. Of a total of 1286 animals killed, 155 were examined and dissected. The coat colour of 88% was pradominandy black, and of these 80% were patterned with white and/or brown. The hair was short in 85% of the goats, but a few males were shaggy all over. No throat tassels or other features of improved breeds were seen. Both sexes were fecund by 1 year of age. Conceptions occurred up to the winter solstice, but none was recorded for at least 4 months after it. Older females conceived earlier than young ones. Females more than 2 years old were 53% of all fecund females, and produced 66% of all kids born. Productivity was estimated to be 83 or 94 kids per year per 100 females of breeding age, depending on the criteria used. Eviscerated body weight, body length, shoulder height, and horn length all showed clear sexual dimorphism, and all increased with age up to 3 years. Kidney fat increased with age only in males. At the time of sampling, female fatness was not related to reproductive state. In areas which had been hunted during the past decade the population was least dense, there was a higher proportion of young animals, the growth rate up to 1 year old was greater, and adults were larger, age for age, than elsewhere on the island.  相似文献

猕猴属中大部分种类的繁殖类型可划分为季节性繁殖和非季节性繁殖两大类型。但是藏酋猴全年均有交配行为发生, 而产仔仅在1~8月间, 其类型属特殊的非季节性交配-季节性产仔繁殖类型。藏酋猴雌性在妊娠后选择的交配对象主要是高序位的雄性, 但非妊娠雌性则主要选择低序位雄性。妊娠后的雌性交配频率低于非妊娠雌性, 同时它们与成年雄性间理毛行为的发生频率亦低, 反之受到成年雄性攻击的频率却高。  相似文献

In search of the relevant difference between mother rearing and surrogate rearing with respect to the emergence of neophobic behavior in macaques, we tested the hypothesis that mobility of surrogate mothers prevents the development of neophobic behavior in cynomolgus macaques. The experimental group consisted of ten surrogate-reared subjects which during their first year got rides on surrogate mothers moving through the cage. The control group consisted of nine subjects reared with immobile surrogate mothers. Between the age of 7 and 27 months the reactions to two different novel objects were tested. First exposure to one object occurred at 6 months of age and to the other object at 20 months. The kind of object and the age of first exposure made no difference. Contrary to our expectations mobility of surrogates did not affect the incidence of neophobia: most subjects in both groups persistently avoided the objects. This finding seems to support Hofer's hypothesis that the mother acts as a regulator of the infant's behavior and physiology.  相似文献

Between 1975 and 1983, adult female vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus) over 3.5 years of age, living in two undisturbed social groups in a captive colony in Sepulveda, California, have averaged 1.0 births per female year with a mean interbirth interval of 10.7 months. Increased fecundity did not result in decreased survival rates of offspring in this population. Fecundity was influenced by the mother's age and dominance rank. The primary factor in the age-fecundity relationship was the age at first birth, which varied from three to five years. High-ranking females contributed the most to the high rate of fecundity, with significantly shorter interbirth intervals, more births per female year, and more surviving infants compared to low-ranking females.  相似文献

Peracarid crustaceans are among the most important taxa in terms of biodiversity and carbon-flow within the Weddell Sea benthos; however, very few data on their age, growth and productivity are available. This study uses the pigment lipofuscin as an age marker in the scavenging amphipod Waldeckia obesa (Chevreux, 1905) from the eastern Weddell Sea. Resin brain sections of 159 trap-caught specimens (1.2 to 7.7 mm coxal plate length L(cox) equal to 5 to 31 mm total length) were recorded digitally by confocal microscopy, and images were analysed. A modal progression analysis of the lipofuscin concentration-frequency distribution revealed five regularly spaced modes presumed to reflect consecutive annual age classes. Single females outside the range of mode V occurred, indicating maximum age of up to 8 years in females. No regular modes were obvious from the comparable length-frequency distribution of 386 individuals. Average yearly pigment accumulation was linear, and accumulation rates did not differ between sexes. The estimates of the growth parameters L(infinity) and k of the von Bertalanffy growth function were 7.47 mm L(cox) and 0.50 per year in females, respectively, and 6.92 mm L(cox) and 0.60 per year in males, respectively. Mortality, estimated from catch curves, amounted to 0.27 per year in females and 0.43 per year in males. P/B ratio, calculated from the mass specific growth rate method, was 0.38 per year for the pooled population (0.25 per year in females, 0.31 per year in males, 2.26 per year in juveniles). The results are discussed with regard to advantages and drawbacks of the methodology, and are compared with results from warmer water habitats.  相似文献

Captive-born squirrel monkeys of three different subtypes (Colombian, Bolivian, Peruvian), ranging in age from 1 to 4.5 years for males and 1 to 3.5 years for females, were examined at 3-month intervals throughout the year for seasonal changes in levels of plasma testosterone and progesterone and in body weight. Cyclical activity of testosterone in males began between 2 and 3 years of age but became more defined by the time the animals were 3–4 years old. Peak values occurred in February and May and corresponded to the the time of year in which adults normally mate. Elevations of progesterone occurred initially at approximately 2.5 years of age in February and May, and mainly infernales of the Colombian subtype. However,unlike levels of testosterone in males of this age, which declined in August and November (following the typical breeding season), levels of progesterone in females continued to increase during these months. Seasonal changes in body weight were also found in males but these changes were less evident than, and did not correlate with, hormonal changes.  相似文献

Reproductive data on captive Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx) were collected from June 1986 through April 1992 at the National Wildlife Research Center (Taif, Saudi Arabia). Oryx females are polyestrous. The estrous cycle averaged 22 days and mean gestation length was 260 ± 5.5 days (S.D). Sex ratio at birth was unbiased and mean weight was 6.5 ± 0.7 kg (S.D.), with no difference between sexes. Under captive breeding conditions, births occurred throughout the year. Females gave birth to a single calf at any time during the day and produced 1.03 young per year. Abortion rate was 3.6%. Mortality rate of young was 6.1% before weaning at 3 months of age. The interbirth interval averaged 295 ± 42 days (S.D.), with 53% lasting between 270 and 279 days. Seizures occurred at some time in 81 (or 32 per cent) of an unselected, consecutive series of 250 cerebral palsied persons between the ages of 16 and 52 years, an incidence similar to that reported by other investigators in groups of cerebral palsied persons who were mainly children.The incidence of seizures of any kind after 16 years of age in the present series was 10 per cent as compared with 0.5 per cent in the general population. Half of the 10 per cent had more than six convulsions despite drug therapy, and the other half had fewer than six.Of thirty-six who had convulsions in the neonatal period, only four had seizure problems as adults, even though most showed moderate to severe physical handicap after age 16.Data on the small group of paraplegics in the present study, all spastics, were in accord with reports by other investigators with regard to decreased incidence of seizures in cerebral palsied patients with normal upper extremities. Of the thirteen (5 per cent of the 250) whose seizure problems continued to be clinically significant in adult life, ten had had frequent seizures in childhood. Eight were hemiplegic. There appeared to be no relationship between the severity of physical handicap and the incidence of seizures after age 16.  相似文献

Although studied for 35 years, knowledge of the reproductive biology of the King Penguin Aptenodytes patagonicus remains incomplete. The chick requires more than 12 months of care, which extends the breeding cycle, including moult, to more than one year, i.e. the King Penguin is neither annual nor biennial. In an attempt to resolve ambiguities in the literature and to elucidate the long-term breeding strategy of the species, we studied breeciing frequency at the individual level, considering the decision to breed in relation to breeding history over the previous few years. Although adult birds attempted to breed annually (0.83 breeding attempts per year), successful rearing occurred, at best, every two years only (maximum of 0.41 fledged chick per pair). Comparing successive years, the number of breeding birds in the colony was stable but the number of fledged chicks varied from 29 to 278 over eight years. These results suggest that King Penguins adopt (as individuals) an opportunistic reproductive strategy, in that they usually lay an egg every year, even when failure is certain. Nevertheless, the decision to breed was not entirely blind, and we identified groups of birds that invested differentially in breeding attempts. The decision to breed was related to the previous breeding frequency, i.e. 81% of the birds that had bred continuously in the past started a new breeding attempt, but only 67% of birds that had missed a year did so. In intermittent breeders, birds that had bred frequently, more often started a new breeding attempt than birds that had largely missed years (71% versus 57%, respectively). Classes of breeders could correspond to age classes, to birds of different breeding quality or to alternative breeding strategies coexisting in the species. Testing the hypothesis that reproductive effort increases with age should be possible in future.  相似文献

This study analyses reproductive parameters resulting from 74 parturitions in a population of captive collared peccaries in the eastern Amazon (Belém, State of Pará, Brazil) during a 65-month survey. Parturitions were homogeneously distributed throughout the year. The average litter size was 1.85 newborns per parturition. Collared peccary females had a newborn sex ratio of 52.6% females and 47.4% males. The mean age at first parturition was 639, although, the earliest first parturition occurred at age of 381 days. Estimated parturition-conception interval was 58 days. Mean farrowing interval was 196 days and mean production was 1.03 litters and 1.86 newborns per year per female. Mortality rate in newborns less than 2 months old was 26.9% of the total newborn population. Most identified causes of death were abandonment by the mother (22.2%) and trauma due to aggression (13.9%). Newborn deaths occurred mainly during the first two days of life. This study suggests that the collared peccary possesses interesting reproductive parameters for its introduction in captive breeding programmes in the Amazon region.  相似文献

Background. Reinfection of Helicobacter pylori after eradication is rare in developed countries but most often occurs within 1 year. In the present study, we attempted to differentiate between reinfection and recrudescence of H. pylori strains between 6 months and 6 years after successful eradication in Japan, a country with a high prevalence of H. pylori infection. Materials and Methods. After successful eradication of H. pylori, 274 patients were followed up by endoscopy and urea breath test. In recurrent patients, H. pylori strains isolated initially and after recurrence were compared using PCR‐based restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. Results. Recurrence of H. pylori occurred in 15 of 274 patients (5.5%) at 6 months after eradication and the annual recurrence rate was 2.0% per patient year (between 1 and 6 years). PCR‐based RFLP analysis of H. pylori strains isolated initially and after recurrence showed that 62.5% (at 6 months) and 100% (after 1 years) of bacteria were of different strains. Conclusion. Reinfection of H. pylori was not as rare at 6 months after eradication as reported previously, and up to 6 years after eradication, the annual reinfection rate is 2.0% per patient year in Japan.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To determine the age related incidence of severe acute renal failure in adults in two health districts in England. DESIGN--Prospective study of patients identified as having severe acute renal failure within a two year period; subsequent monitoring of outcome for a further two years. SETTING--Two health districts in Devon. SUBJECTS--Those adults in a population of 444,971 who developed severe acute renal failure (serum creatinine concentration > 500 mumol/l) for the first time during two years, with subsequent fall of the serum creatinine concentration below the index value. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES AND RESULTS--125 adults (140 per million total population yearly, 172 per million adults) developed severe acute renal failure, of whom 90 (72%) were over 70. Age related incidence rose from 17 per million yearly in adults under 50 to 949 per million yearly in the 80-89 age groups. In 31 patients (25%) the cause was prostatic disease, which was related to a good prognosis (84% (26) alive at three months). Overall survival was 54% (67) at three months and 34% (42) at two years and was not significantly age related. 18 per million total population yearly (22 per million adult population) received acute dialysis. Referral rate for specialised opinion was 51 per million total population yearly with an estimated appropriate referral rate of 70 per million per year. CONCLUSIONS--The incidence of severe acute renal failure in the community is at least twice as high as the incidence reported from renal unit based studies. Prostatic disease, a preventable and treatable problem, is the most common cause. Survival figures indicate that age alone should not be a bar to specialist referral or treatment.  相似文献

Four hundred normal children aged between 2 weeks and 11 years were examined to determine the prevalence and site of recent injury of any type. There was evidence of injury in 37% with a steady increase in prevalence to 60% by the end of the third year of life. Bruising of the hands and feet and of the lower legs was the most frequent type of injury. Head and facial injuries were most common between 18 months and 3 years (17% of children) but were rare at other ages. Injury to the lumbar region was unusual before 5 years but was present in 14% of children of school age. In 84 children of similar age where non-accidental injury was proved or suspected a different pattern of injury was present. Sixty per cent had injuries to the head and face; this increase in prevalence was seen at all ages. These children also had more frequent injuries in the lumbar region, particularly before the age of 5 years.  相似文献
