Performance of leaf beetle larvae on sympatric host and non-host plants   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Studies asking the ability of insects to utilize novel host plants often use novel hosts that are allopatric with the insect population under investigation. However, since the outcomes of species interactions are often site-specific, such studies cannot tell us whether a plant would actually be used by a given insect population if the plant grew sympatrically with it. We therefore performed a quantitative genetics experiment to analyse the performance of larvae of the leaf beetle Oreina elongata Suffrian (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Chrysomelinae) on two host and three non-host plants, collected from a site where insects and plants co-occur in the Western Alps. When raised on the non-host Petasites albus (L.), larvae were able to survive equally well as on the two hosts, Adenostyles alliariae (Gouan) and Cirsium spinosissimum (L.), whereas they did not survive on the two other non-hosts, Peucedanum ostruthium (L.) and Rumex alpinus L. On P. albus, growth rate was slightly lower and development time slightly longer than on the two hosts. We found a genotype by environment interaction only for growth rate but not for development time and survival. However, the shape of the reaction norms of growth rates suggests that it is unlikely that selection could favour the inclusion of P. albus into the host range of the study population.  相似文献

Summary The legumeMedicago sativa was grown in two phosphate-fixing soils which received soluble or rock phosphate. The effects of the inoculation withGlomus mosseae on plant nutrition and nodulation were studied. The introduced VA fungi became successfully established and improved the degree of infection over level achieved by native endophytes. In all experimental conditions tested, plant dry weight, the total uptake of N and P and nodulation byRhizobium meliloti were increased by mycorrhizal inoculation. The size of the increase was inversely correlated with soluble P content in the soil. Mycorrhization, enhanced by introduction of suitable VA fungi, had similar effects to that of the dose of soluble phosphate tested. Indigenous and native endophytes cooperated in these effects. Results are discussed in terms of reducing the input of soluble P fertilizer to phosphate-fixing soils and the possibility of restoring the phosphate stock using a more rational supply of soluble P, that allows cooperation with VA fungi, or by the use of less soluble and expensive forms of P fertilizers.  相似文献

Pieris rapae curucivora Boisduval is a major cause of damage to important Brassicaceae vegetable crops. The method of host landing plant selection by adult females was investigated by covering cabbage (host) and lettuce (non-host) plants to block visual and/or olfactory signals, and also by using volatile extracts of both plants.  相似文献

Diet-induced changes in food preference by fifth instar larvae of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta (Johan.) (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae), were examined. Two groups of larvae with different diet experience were used: larvae reared on a host or on an acceptable non-host plant species. Each group of larvae was offered a choice between leaf discs from each rearing plant species (2-plant choice test) and food preference was measured as the consumption of one plant species relative to that of the other plant species. Diet-induced changes in preferences were larger with the host versus acceptable non-host plant pairs Solanum pseudocapsicum (L.) versus Raphanus sativus (L.), Lycopersicon esculentum (Mill.) versus Vigna sinensis (Savi), and Datura innoxia (L.) versus V. sinensis than with the host versus host plant pairs L. esculentum versus Capsicum annuum (L.) and L. esculentum versus D. innoxia. To examine how much the food preference had been altered for each test plant species alone, two other groups of larvae were offered a choice between leaf discs from a single plant species and filter paper discs laced with distilled water (1-plant choice test). Larvae preferred the dietary plant species more strongly than the non-dietary plant species in tests using the following plant species: for C. annuum with C. annuum and L. esculentum as diets, for V. sinensis with V. sinensis and L. esculentum or D. innoxia as diets, and for R. sativus with R. sativus and S. pseudocapsicum as diets. The preference for the hosts L. esculentum and D. innoxia did not change significantly after rearing larvae on different hosts or on an acceptable non-host. Thus, diet-induction by M. sexta larvae results in an enhancement of preference for the dietary plant species which is much stronger with acceptable non-hosts than with hosts.  相似文献

Under glasshouse conditions Cajanus cajan plants grown in a dark red latosol were fertilized with soluble simple superphosphate and hardly soluble rock phosphate and inoculated with three VA mycorrhizal fungi (M1, Gigaspora margarita; M2, Scutellospora verrucosa; M3, Acaulospora rehmii) from the Cerrado ecosystem, Brazil. Only with rock phosphate plant growth was significantly increased by all fungi. Enhanced P uptake corresponded with higher yields and proved to be a characteristic of the VA myccorhizae. A definite relationship between infection intensity and efficiency of VA mycorrhizae was not detected. Spore production was generally more pronounced in the treatment with rock phosphate, especially with M1 and M2. Nodulation of Cajanus cajan was greatly improved by all fungi in the treatment with rock phosphate. It is suggested that the increased plant development and nodulation was due to improved uptake of P by mycorrhiza.  相似文献

The behaviour of female cabbage root flies during host plant selection was studied in the laboratory using brassica plants growing in backgrounds of bare soil, clover, grass, peas and four non-living materials. Gravid females landed about twice as often on brassica plants growing in bare soil than on comparable plants growing amongst non-host plants. Once a receptive female landed on a brassica plant, the female made, on average, four ‘spiral flights’ and two jumps on and off the plant before laying alongside the plant. Surrounding a brassica plant with a diverse background altered the behaviour of the flies, so that the spiral flights around the host plant were replaced by short hops between nearby vertical objects. The loss of contact and recontact with the host plant then prevented the females from accumulating sufficient contacts with the host plant to be stimulated to lay. Spiral flights around host plants appear to determine whether or not flies will lay alongside host plants. Flies in mixed plantings have a reduced rate of settling on the host plant, and a higher rate of locomotion, because they land frequently on non-host plants. Hence, visual stimuli appeared to have greater effects than, chemical or mechanical barriers in deterring flies from laying alongside brassica plants in diverse backgrounds. In ‘choice’ situations, backgrounds of real plants reduced oviposition alongside brassica plants by at least 50%. In ‘no-choice’ situations, flies laid similar numbers of eggs alongside all brassica plants irrespective of plant background or plant size. If numbers of fly eggs are to be reduced on commercial brassica crops by undersowing the crops with clover, plants growing in bare soil may also have to be included to provide the flies with sites preferred for oviposition.  相似文献

The effect of non-host maize plants on colonisation of cowpea byMegalurothrips sjostedti (Trybom) (Thysanoptera; Thripidae) was investigated. There were no differences in population density and activity ofM. sjostedti on sole cowpea crop and mixed cowpea/maize crop during the colonisation phase (i.e. 10–30 days after emergence of the plants. However, subsequentlyM. sjostedti numbers were lower in the mixed than in the sole crop, suggesting that maize did not interfere with colonisation of cowpea crop by thrips. In a choice situation, higher numbers ofM. sjostedti oriented towards, and settled on, sole cowpea plants than on those mixed with maize. Olfactory tests indicated that fewer thrips oriented towards a cowpea/maize mixed odour source. When equal numbers of thrips were introduced into the centre of sole- and mixed-cropped cowpea plots, the thrips became randomly distributed in each plot. Fewer thrips were recovered from the mixture than from the sole crop. It is concluded that, although non-host plant odours do not reduce thrips colonisation they interfere with host plant utilisation.  相似文献

Summary Non-mycorrhizal plants grown 5 weeks in a low-phosphate soil with different amounts of soluble P were transplanted to soil also with different levels of phosphate and inoculated with VA mycorrhiza. The intensity of mycorrhizal infection as affected by the interaction of differents levels of phosphate in soil and in the host was examined after a further 8 weeks. In the soil with no added phosphate mycorrhizal infection was not affected by the initial P content of the plants. When 0.8 or 1.5 g K2PO4 was given per kg soil both the external and the internal P negatively influenced the infection. In some conditions a P content that was supraoptimal for infection was not for plant growth. The critical P concentration in plants depends on the age of the host. An interaction between P and N as a factor contributing to phosphate toxicity is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Inoculation of lettuce, onion and clover with VA mycorrhizal fungus (Glomus mosseae) increased plant yields and phosphate uptake in three soils that had been depleted in phosphate. From two soils in which the labile pool of phosphate had been labelled with32P, the specific activity of plant phosphate was the same whether the plants were mycorrhizal or non-mycorrhizal. In a third soil (Sonning) the specific activity was lower in lettuce and clover when the plants were mycorrhizal. When the experiment was repeated with the same soil under conditions that gave lower growth rates, the specific activity was the same in mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants. The lower specific activity in lettuce and clover in the first experiment is atributed to greater release of slowly exchanging phosphate (which is not in equilibrium with the added32P), caused by the high uptake of phosphate by the mycorrhizal plants. When they occur, lower specific activities in mycorrhizal plants may therefore not necessarily indicate a solubilizing effect of the mycorrhiza on soil phosphate.  相似文献

Insect oviposition on plants is widespread across many systems, but studies on the response of host plants to oviposition damage are lacking. Although patterns of oviposition vary spatially and temporally, ovipositing insects that exhibit outbreak characteristics may have strong effects on host plants during peak abundance. Periodical cicadas (Magicicada spp.), in particular, may reduce the performance of host plants when they synchronously emerge in massive numbers to mate and oviposit on host plants. Here we provide the first experimental manipulation of host plant use by periodical cicadas to evaluate the impact of cicada oviposition on plant performance across a diversity of host species within an ecologically relevant setting. Using a randomized block design, we established a plantation of three native and three exotic host plant species common to the successional forests in which cicadas occur. During the emergence of Brood X in 2004, we employed a highly effective cicada exclusion treatment by netting half of the host plants within each block. We assessed multiple measures of host plant performance, including overall plant growth and the growth and reproduction of individual branches, across three growing seasons. Despite our thorough assessment of potential host plant responses to oviposition damage, cicada oviposition did not generally inhibit host plant performance. Oviposition densities on unnetted host plants were comparable to levels documented in other studies, reinforcing the ecological relevance of our results, which indicate that cicada oviposition damage did not generally reduce the performance of native or exotic host plants.  相似文献

In order to better understand the maintenance of a fairly narrow diet breadth in monarch butterfly larvae, Danaus plexippus L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Danainae), we measured feeding preference and survival on host and non-host plant species, and sensitivity to host and non-host plant chemicals. For the plant species tested, a hierarchy of feeding preferences was observed; only plants from the Asclepiadaceae were more or equally preferred to Asclepias curassavica, the common control. The feeding preferences among plant species within the Asclepiadaceae are similar to published mean cardenolide concentrations. However, since cardenolide data were not collected from individual plants tested, definitive conclusions regarding cardenolide concentrations and plant acceptability cannot be made. Although several non-Asclepiadaceae were eaten in small quantities, all were less preferred to A. curassavica. Additionally, these non-Asclepiadaceae do not support continued feeding, development, and survival of first and fifth-instar larvae. Preference for a host versus a non-host (A. curassavica versus Vinca rosea) increased for A. curassavica reared larvae as compared to diet-reared larvae suggesting plasticity in larval food preferences. Furthermore, host species were significantly preferred over non-host plant species in bioassays using a host plant or sucrose as a common control. Larval responses to pure chemicals were examined in order to determine if host and non-host chemicals stimulate or deter feeding in monarch larvae. We found that larvae were stimulated to feed by some ubiquitous plant chemicals, such as sucrose, inositol, and rutin. In contrast, several non-host plant chemicals deterred feeding: caffeine, apocynin, gossypol, tomatine, atropine, quercitrin, and sinigrin. Additionally the cardenolides digitoxin and ouabain, which are not in milkweed plants, were neutral in their influence on feeding. Another non-milkweed cardenolide, cymarin, significantly deterred feeding. Extracts of A. curassavica leaves were tested in bioassays to determine which components of the leaf stimulate feeding. Both an ethanol extract of whole leaves and a hexane leaf-surface extract are phagostimulatory, suggesting the involvement of both polar and non-polar plant compounds. These data suggest that the host range of D. plexippus larvae is maintained by both feeding stimulatory and deterrent chemicals in host and non-host plants.  相似文献

A preparation of bean rust (Uromyces phaseoli) germ tube walls, consisting of short, filamentous particles, was labeled with fluorescein iso-thiocyanate. Freeze sections of host and non-host tissue were incubated in the labeled preparation. Maximum staining was observed in host plant tissue (Phaseolus vulgaris), in which bean rust regularly forms haustoria. In tissue of the non-host plantsVigna sinensis andPhaseolus lunatus, where fewer haustoria were formed, staining was only weak. However, no staining was observed in the non-host tissue ofPhaseolus aureus, Helianthus annuus, Brassica oleracea andHordeum vulgare in which the infection hypha did not form haustoria. This would appear to indicate that formation of haustoria is induced by a specific attachment of the hyphal wall to the host wall. The possibility that elicitors attach in a similar way, is discussed.Abbreviations FITC Fluorescein iso-thiocyanate - cv cultivar  相似文献

Six‐hundred individual female cabbage root flies (Delia radicum L.) (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) were each observed for 20 min under laboratory conditions to record how they behaved after landing on a host or a non‐host plant. Fly movements were recorded on host plants [cabbage –Brassica oleracea var. capitata (Cruciferae)] and non‐host plants [clover –Trifolium subterraneum L. (Papilionaceae)] surrounded by bare soil and on cabbage surrounded by clover. The most frequently observed behaviours made by the flies were (1) hops/spiral flights and (2) walks/runs. In the bare soil situation, the 50 individual flies observed in each treatment made 66 hops/spiral flights on the cabbage and 94 on the clover. When the two plants were tested together the movements were not additive as, instead of the expected 160 hops/spiral flights in the mixed plant treatment, the flies made 210 hops/spiral flights when they landed initially on cabbage but only 130 when they landed initially on clover. Few of the flies that landed initially on clover moved onto the host plant, even though the host plant was only a few centimetres away. The duration of the individual walks and runs made by the cabbage root flies were similar on both the host and non‐host plants. The only differences were the numbers of walks/runs made and the time the flies remained inactive. On the host plants, the females made four walks/runs, each of about 12 s duration, interspersed by rest periods that totalled 1.5 min. In contrast, on the non‐host plants the females made 10 walks/runs, each of about 9 s duration, interspersed by rest periods that totalled 7 min. Therefore, after landing on a plant, the flies, on average, left the host plant after 2.25 min and the non‐host plant after 8.5 min. Our conclusion is that the protracted time spent on the non‐host plants is the mechanism that disrupts insects from finding host plants in diverse plantings. Hence, the flies were arrested by non‐host plants rather than being repelled or deterred as suggested in earlier studies.

Abstract: Electroantennogram (EAG) responses of male and female leafminer Liriomyza sativae Blanchard to 15 species of host and non-host plant odours were recorded. The most distinct EAG responses of both sexes were obtained in the host plants bean and tomato. EAG responses to other host plants, such as cucumber, celery, chrysanthemum, towel gourd and cotton were reduced. Odours of non-host plants, such as Chinese rose, tobacco and morning glory elicited minimal EAG responses. In a behavioural study, both sexes of L. sativae were more attracted by the odours of host plants than of non-host plants. Thus, olfactory cues are important for host plant location by L. sativae . In addition, the combination of strong EAG and behavioural responses for both males and females to specific plant odours suggests that host plant volatiles can be important as aggregation cues for both sexes.  相似文献

The sawfly, Diprion pini L., is a pest of Pinus in Europe and is mainly found on P. sylvestris L. and P. nigra laricio Poiret. The relative importance of female oviposition capacity and behaviour, egg development, and larval survival on a new host plant was measured on 11 pine species. Five were natural host plants and six non-host plants, five of which are not indigenous to Europe. Oviposition choice tests showed that females discriminated between the pine species. Egg and larval development also differed between pine species. However, the female choice was not linked with hatching rate and larval development. Results of biological tests clearly indicated that there were different response patterns of D. pini life stages in relation to pine species, and these patterns were the same with insects of four different origins. We discuss the importance of each potential barrier to colonisation of a new host.  相似文献

Three tropical forage legumes, Stylosanthes capitata, Pueraria phaseoloides and Centrosema macrocarpum, and one grass, Brachiaria dictyoneura, were grown in a sterile phosphate deficient soil amended with soluble or rock phosphate at rates ranging from 0 to 400 mg kg-1 soil. The effects of inoculation with Glomus manihotis on mycorrhizal infection and plant growth were assessed. Early growth and nodulation of P. phaseoloides in soil with and without rock phosphate fertilizer were also determined. In the legumes, mycorrhizal infection was high at all P levels and sources, except for a significant decrease of infection in S. capitata at high levels of superphosphate. Plant growth was significantly increased by phosphate fertilizer and mycorrhizal inoculation. Mycorrhizal responses were more pronounced at low P levels with both P sources. In B. dictyoneura mycorrhizal infection was decreased with increasing additions of P. No effects of mycorrhizal inoculation (except with no added P) were observed. Growth and nodulation of P. phaseoloides were greatly stimulated by mycorrhizal inoculation.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Nymphs of Vanduzeea arquata Say have been found to be more host-specific in nature and to show a higher degree of selectivity in host discrimination experiments than nymphs of Enchenopa binotata (Say), It was hypothesized that this differential selectivity would be reflected in the probing behaviour of individuals placed on twigs of host and non-host plants. Probing behaviour was examined by direct observation of nymphs and by sectioning and staining the probed plant tissues.
2. All nymphs probed readily and for extended periods on both host and non-host twigs. E.binotuta nymphs showed no consistent differences in probing behaviour on hosts versus non-hosts, but V.atquuta nymphs were more likely to withdraw their stylets within 60 s when on non-host twigs and produced honeydew only when on their host species. V.urquatu nymphs reached the phloem sieve elements only when on host twigs and broke many cells in peripheral plant tissue layers while probing. E.binotata nymphs broke few cells and often reached the phloem of non-host as well as host plants.
3. Nymphs of V.arquata always reject non-host plants, apparently in the course of probing and prior to encountering the phloem sap. Chemical compounds released from ruptured parenchyma cells may act as probing stimulants or inhibitors. E.binotura nymphs often feed on non-host plants in a non-choice situation; their preferential settling on host twigs in discrimination experiments may reflect a tendency to abandon non-host twigs more readily than host twigs.  相似文献

Increasing intrafield plant diversity has been shown to regulate pest populations in various agroecosystems. Among the suggested mechanisms for this bottom-up pest control, the disruptive crop hypothesis states that herbivores' abilities to locate and colonize their host plants are reduced by the presence of non-host plants. Under laboratory conditions, we evaluated how intercropping wheat and legumes modifies the behaviour of apterous cereal aphids, Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), in terms of host plant location and population growth. We compared two intercropping systems – soft winter wheat, Triticum aestivum L. (Poaceae), associated with winter pea, Pisum sativum L., or with white clover, Trifolium repens L. (both Fabaceae) – and sole stands of soft winter wheat. Aphids needed more time to locate their wheat host plant and then spent less time on wheat when it was intercropped with clover. At the population level, and accounting for host plant biomass, only intercropping wheat with clover significantly reduced aphid densities on wheat, as this was particularly disruptive to S. avenae behaviour and population growth. Our laboratory study points out that the species used as non-host plants and their density are important parameters that should be taken into account in field studies on intercropping systems.  相似文献
