The present work highlights the ability of wild and cultured Monaco shrimp Lysmata seticaudata to control the glass anemone Aiptasia pallida. Starved shrimp ingested the highest percentages of glass anemones [85.7% and 89.3% for wild (W) and cultured (C) shrimp, respectively]. The absence of symbiotic zooxanthellae in glass anemones did not influence the shrimps feeding rate, with shrimp offered aposymbiotic anemones displaying the same feeding percentages (67.3% and 70.7% for W and C shrimp, respectively) as those offered sea anemones with symbiotic zooxanthellae (70.0% and 74.4% for W and C shrimp, respectively). Shrimp offered larger sea anemones had the lowest feeding percentages (33.0% and 36.3% for W and C shrimp, respectively), along with shrimp offered an alternative food (27.3% and 36.0% for W and C shrimp, respectively). There were no significant differences in the percentage of glass anemones ingested by cultured and wild Monaco shrimp in the same feeding trial.  相似文献

Members of the shrimp speciesLysmata seticaudata were observed to clean a morrey eel in the western Mediterranean Sea (Baleares, Spain). In contrast to the cleaning symbiosis of tropical shrimps, severalLysmata species have only one host, thus representing a primitive type of cleaning behaviour.Lysmata seticaudata is not dependent upon cleaning for food and usually these shrimps are found without a host.  相似文献

This study evaluates possible parasitic castration induced by a bopyrid isopod of the genus Parabopyrella, which parasitizes the branchial chamber of the simultaneously hermaphroditic shrimp Lysmata amboinensis. Parasitized shrimp (PS) carried embryos and produced significantly fewer larvae (mean +/- SD: 363 +/- 102; p = 0.002) than formerly parasitized shrimp (FPS) (1297 +/- 143) and unparasitized shrimp (US) paired with other US (1409 +/- 102), with PS (1362 +/- 234) or with FPS (1384 +/- 157). Starvation trials revealed no significant differences in the quality of larvae produced by PS, FPS and US paired with other US, PS and FPS. Host embryo production is only quantitatively, not qualitatively, affected, probably due to nutritional drain and/or endocrine disruption caused by the parasite. The host male sexual system remains fully functional and 'reproductive death' does not occur. The feminization of pleopods that prevents parasitized males of gonochoric species from successfully copulating seems to have no effect on L. seticaudata: pleopods are always feminized during their transition from male to simultaneous hermaphrodite phase, with adults being able to successfully fertilize broods. Parabopyrella sp. significantly affects the female sexual system of its host, but does not cause castration, as recorded for L. seticaudata parasitized by the bopyrid isopod Eophryxus lysmatae (an abdominal parasite).  相似文献

The caridean shrimp Lysmata vittata (Stimpson, 1860) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Hippolytidae), which is found in the Pos??et Bay of the Sea of Japan is reported as new to the fauna of Russia. Sexually mature specimens of different ages were found at a depth of 2?C3 m among large boulders on a sandy bottom. The presence of a stable population of L. vittata in the investigated region substantially extends the distribution area of this species in the Sea of Japan.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to describe and illustrate the morphology of the spermatozoon of the Western Atlantic shrimp, Hippolyte obliquimanus. Individuals were sampled from Itaguá Beach (Ubatuba, southern Brazil). The male reproductive system was dissected and morphological analysis was undertaken using a stereomicroscope, a light microscope, and transmission electron and scanning electron microscopes. When viewed from the nuclear or acrosomal poles, each spermatozoon has many translucent radiating arms (about 20) from a denser cell body, while laterally the cell body and arms resemble a “cnidarian medusa”, with all the arms projecting away from the bell-like cell body. This sperm morphology is distinct from the “thumbtack”-shaped spermatozoa observed in the majority of carideans but has similarities to the spermatozoa of Rhynchocinetes spp. The morphology of sperm of several species of the genus Hippolyte resembles the spermatozoon of H. obliquimanus with the presence of posterior nuclear arms, but it is necessary to study other Hippolyte species to place these arms in the context of the genus.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Reproductive output parameters (fecundity and egg volume) of Lysmata vittata were examined in a population in northeastern Brazil. Effect of maturation diets on the reproductive output of these shrimp under laboratory conditions was evaluated. Reproductive output was estimated for 25 shrimp collected in the wild. Another 45 pairs of shrimp were used for diet experiments, 15 pairs per treatment (T1: industrialized food, T2: fresh food, T3: mixed diets). For wild population, mean fecundity and egg volume were differed between developmental stages of the eggs. Fecundity was significantly lower in the specimens subjected to T1 diet (267 ± 141 eggs) compared with shrimp from the wild population (393 ± 183 eggs). Egg volume was significantly lower in shrimp subjected to three diets tested compared with those from wild population. Egg loss during embryonic development in L. vittata may be caused by several factors (e.g. aborted development and maternal cannibalism). Fresh food proved to be important for improving reproductive output in L. vittata reared in culture. We emphasize the significance of improving nutritional value and palatability of diets to improve cultivation efficiency. Lysmata vittata can be used as a model organism for future studies aiming to improve the cultivation techniques for shrimp of the genus.

Hypotheses on delayed sex change in the protandric simultaneous hermaphrodite Lysmata wurdemanni were tested with observations from population samples, mating experiments, and experiments on sex change under optimal and suboptimal breeding conditions. Male-phase individuals (MPs) much larger than the minimum size of sex change were most frequent in a natural population from fall through early spring. The hypothesis was tested that some MPs delay sex change to the simultaneous hermaphrodite female-phase (FP) because MPs are more competitive in obtaining copulations with parturial FPs than are FPs mating as males (MFPs). In different experiments, parturial FPs were maintained with two potential male mating partners (large MP and MFP, small MP and MFP, large MP and small MP) through the parturial molt and spawning; activities were recorded with time-lapse video. MFPs gained the single copulation with the parturial FP as frequently as MPs, large or small, but large MPs copulated with more FPs than small MPs. The hypothesis of FP reversion to large MP was tested experimentally and rejected. Rate of change of MP to FP was much lower in large MPs maintained under suboptimal (fall/winter) than optimal (spring/summer) breeding conditions. The results presented here suggest that the occurrence of large MPs from the fall to early spring is better explained by abiotic proximate factors related to breeding than by socially mediated sex change in different demographic environments.  相似文献

The present state of knowledge concerning Portunus larvae isreviewed, and the three zoeal and the megalopa stages of P.rubromarginatus are described and figured. Details of appendagesetation are tabulated. This species is unusual amongst knownPortunus spp. in having only three zoeal stages and, like otherPortunus spp. but in contrast with other Portuninae, it has4 + 4, or 4 + 1 + 4, setae on the posterior telson border. When compared with larvae of the five other Indo-West PacificPortunus species whose larvae are known P. rubromarginatus zoeaeare readily distinguished from all, except P. hastatoides, usingthe key features given by Kurata (1975). Comparison was madebetween first zoeae of these two species, and also of P. pelagicusand P. sanguinolentus, using larvae reared by the authors. Itwas found telson characters alone allow distinction betweenlarvae of these four species. These characters are tabulated. P. rubromarginatus megalopae differ from those known for congenitorsin having a large spine on the uchium of the first pereiopod, but not on the carpus, and in having relatively very small sternalcornuae. Several of these features disagree with those previously thoughtto characterise larval Portuninae or Portunus species.  相似文献

The complete larval development of the porcellanid crabNeopisosoma negluctum Werding, 1986, was studied under laboratory conditions. At 27°C, the megalopa appeared after 9 days. The development consists of a transitory prezoea, two zoeal stages and a megalopa stage. The larvae exhibit telsonal features which places them in thePetrolisthes-group of porcellanid larvae. Larval morphology gives no additional support for the status ofNeopisosoma as an independent genus.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Embryonic durations and post embryonic growth rates of Caridina nilotica were determined under laboratory conditions at constant temperatures near 18, 24 and 30°C. Embryonic durations and intermoult intervals were negative curvilinear functions of temperature. At a given temperature moulting frequency varied inversely with shrimp size and slight sexual differences were apparent. Moulting frequency of berried females was governed by the temperature-specific embryonic durations. Growth rates were determined from changes in carapace length (CL) of individual shrimps (laboratory) or batches of shrimps (field enclosures) over 1 month and these data were used to calculate temperature-specific life-long growth curves for males and females. Growth in body mass was estimated indirectly from the carapace length-mass relationship of C. nilotica. On average, males grew marginally faster than females during the first 2 months of life, but growth of males larger than CL= 4 mm was considerably depressed relative to that of females. Inflexions in growth rate, apparently related to the onset of sexual maturity, were apparent in both sexes. Under laboratory conditions, the growth rate of males increased with temperature, but temperature-related differences were not as marked in females. Notwithstanding the more rapid moulting rate at 30°C the growth rate of females was slightly slower at 30 than at 24°C as a result of marginally but significantly smaller per moult growth increments observed at 30°C in animals up to CL= 5.5 mm. Possible reasons for this depressed growth are discussed. Growth rates of animals in field enclosures in Lake Sibaya over 1 month in winter (20 ± 3°C) were generally comparable to those estimated for the 18°C laboratory experiments. Growth rates in enclosures containing tripled standing stocks were almost identical to those containing the naturally occurring biomass of animals, suggesting a non-limited environment at least during the time of the experiment.  相似文献

The Hippolytidae is the fourth largest family within the Caridea, currently containing over 330 described species in 37 genera, and the classification of this family has been rather controversial. In this study, sequences of two nuclear protein‐coding genes, enolase and sodium‐potassium ATPase α‐subunit, and the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene (totalling 1405 bp) from 29 hippolytid species in 20 genera plus 17 species from eight other caridean families were used to examine the phylogenetic status of Hippolytidae sensu lato. Our results clearly reject the monophyly of Hippolytidae and support the recognition of the Lysmatidae Dana, 1852, Thoridae Kingsley, 1879, Bythocarididae Christoffersen 1987 and Merguiidae Christoffersen 1990 .  相似文献

The complete larval development of the shallow-water Caribbean porcellanid crab, Petrolisthes politus (Gray, 1831), is described and illustrated from specimens reared in the laboratory. Petrolisthes politus hatches as a prezoea, which persist for less than 90 minutes, and then molts through two subsequent zoeal stages, which are completed in 6 to 7 and 14 to 16 days, respectively, before the megalopal stage is reached. From a total of about 2000 zoeae that were cultured, only two reached the megalopal stage. The two megalopae survived for up to 5 days but did not molt to the first crab stage. The zoeae of P. politus are compared with those of Petrolisthes rufescens (Heller, 1861), Petrolisthes lamarckii (Leach, 1820), Petrolisthes carinipes (Heller, 1861), Petrolisthes coccineus (Owen 1839) and Petrolisthes pubescens (Stimpson, 1858), which were hitherto the only species having bifid lateral spines on the telson of the first zoeal stage.  相似文献

The objectives of the study were to characterize the enzymic antioxidant system (free radical scavenging enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidases, glutathione transferase and glutathione reductase), dietary antioxidants (vitamin E), the oxidation status (malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and the fluorescence intensity of lipid-soluble fluorescent products (LSFP)) and lipid composition (lipid classes and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) as pro-oxidants) in neural tissues from males and females of wild-caught size-class distributed blue and red marine shrimp Aristeus antennatus (Risso, 1816), trawled off the south coast of Spain. Moreover, the mechanisms that may result in the deposition of age-pigments in relation to the physiological age of this species in its natural environment were investigated. Three different size classes were defined for males and four for females, and differences were observed for the different variables measured between sexes. The proportion of polar lipids (primarily phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylserine) predominated over that of neutral lipids, increasing significantly in males but decreasing in females. However, cerebrosides increased significantly from size–age class I to III in males but no significant differences were observed in females. The fatty acid composition showed increases in monounsaturated fatty acids (particularly 18:1 and 24:1 isomers) and dimethyl acetals, but decreases in PUFA (primarily 22:6(n-3)) with increasing size–age in both sexes. The concentration of MDA (nmol g−1 brain) did not present any marked trend with size–age in both sexes. In contrast, fluorescence intensity showed increasing trends in both sexes with increasing size–age, when expressed as % fluorescence brain−1 (λex/em 350–445 nm and λex/em 400–455). However, when expressed as % fluorescence mg−1 brain total lipid, only males presented an upward trend with size–age (λex/em 400–455). The concentration of vitamin E (ng mg−1 brain) did not show significant differences between different size–age classes within the same sex and showed a molar ratio of one molecule of vitamin E per approximately 200 molecules of PUFA in brain membranes. The antioxidant enzyme activities showed clearer patterns with increasing size–age in males than in females, with catalase and glutathione transferase presenting downward trends and superoxide dismutase and total glutathione peroxidase showing upward trends. The fluorescence analysis of brain LSFP was not a useful tool to separate the population into different size–age classes, although the different patterns encountered between sexes for the variables measured points to males as better subjects for this type of study.  相似文献

The genus Hexapanopeus Rathbun, 1898 contains eight species,of which three are found in the Brazilian coast. The larvaldevelopment of two of these species has already been studiedin the laboratory. This article describes in detail the morphologyof the complete larval stages of Hexapanopeus caribbaeus rearedunder laboratory conditions, and the morphology is comparedwith that of the larvae of the other species of the same genus.  相似文献

Larval development of the spider crab, Pisoides bidentatus (A.Milne-Edwards, 1873) (Decapoda: Majoidea: Pisidae), inhabitingthe Russian waters of the Sea of Japan is described and illustratedfor the first time from larvae reared in the laboratory. Thedevelopment included two zoea and one megalopa, thus followingthe typical pattern in the Majoidea. At a temperature of 20–22°Clarval development of P. bidentatus took from 9 to 13 days. The comparative analysis revealed that the larvae of two Pisoidesspecies differ in numerous characters whereas zoea of P. bidentatusand Pugettia quadridens belonging to different families arenearly identical. According the larval characters, P. bidentatusand P. quadridens should be assigned to one genus. The larvaldata lend the support to revision the taxonomic position ofP. bidentatus.  相似文献

The giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, is a large shrimp extensively used in aquaculture whose grooming behaviors were analyzed in this study. Macrobrachium rosenbergii exhibits three unique male morphotypes that differ in their behavior, morphology and physiology: small-clawed males (SM), orange-clawed males (OC) and blue-clawed males (BC). The largest and most dominant males, BC males, are predicted to have significantly different grooming behaviors compared to females and the other two male morphotypes. These BC males may be too large and bulky to efficiently groom and may dedicate more time to mating and agonistic interactions than grooming behaviors. Observations were conducted to look at the prevalence of grooming behaviors in the absence and presence of conspecifics and to determine if any differences in grooming behavior exist among the sexes and male morphotypes. Significant differences in the grooming behaviors of all individuals (females and male morphotypes) were found. BC males tended to have the highest grooming time budget (percent of time spent grooming) while SM males had a relatively low grooming time budget. The grooming behaviors of the male morphotypes differed, indicating while these males play distinct, separate roles in the social hierarchy, they also have different grooming priorities. The conditions in which Macrobrachium rosenbergii are cultured may result in increased body fouling, which may vary, depending on the grooming efficiencies and priorities of these male morphotypes. Overall, grooming behaviors were found to be a secondary behavior which only occurred when primary behaviors such as mating, feeding or fighting were not present.  相似文献
