A new species of Haminaea from the Southern Iberian Peninsulais described. Haminaea templadoi is characterized by the presenceof a penis with an apical semispherical crest provided by tensmall transverse folds and a well developed lateral lobe. The Atlantic and Mediterranean flabellinid Flabellina affinis(Gmelin, 1791) (Opisthobranchia, Nudi-branchia, Aeolidoidea)is examined morphologically, anatomically and histologicallywith special emphasis on characters which have been widely neglectedin recent literature (e.g. the histological structure of theoral glands, typhlosole). The study provides detailed data aboutall organ systems which are compared to existing data of otherauthors. The species described as Flabellina affinis by Bergh(1875; 1886) is considered not to be conspecific with the Flabellinaaffinis examined in this and other studies. Furthermore, Flabellinaaffinis is compared to other Mediterranean species, especiallyF. ischitana (Hirano & Thompson, 1990). F. ischitana differsfrom F. affinis mainly by the structure of the genital system.The phylogenetic trees presented for the genus by Gosliner &Kuzirian (1990) and Gosliner & Willan (1991) are discussed. Runcinella thompsoni new species (Gastropoda: Opisthobranchia)is described on the basis of material collected in the GalapagosIslands. This new species differs from R. zelandica Odhner,1924, both in colour, reddish in the former, dark green withwhite freckles in the latter, and radular tooth morphology,mainly the first lateral teeth. A new species of the genus Haminaca has been found in samplesfrom the northern Adriatic Sea. The new species is very similarto H. orteai, but may be clearly distinguished by body size,the non-pigmented area around the eyes, number of leaves ofHancock's organ, number of ridges on the gizzard plates andby the morphology of male genital tract. The Elysiidae is the largest family of Sacoglossa (=Ascoglossa)(Mollusca, Opisthobranchia). The Indo-Pacific fauna containsabout 65 species presently referred to the genus Elysia. Almostnothing is known about the internal anatomy of these animals.In the present study the internal anatomy, particularly thepharyngeal musculature, morphology of radularteeth, and reproductivesystems, of 12 Indo-Pacific elysiids is investigated. Also,the internal anatomy of the Mediterranean type species of thegenera Elysia and Thuridilla is described. On this basis, thevalidity of the genera Elysia, Thuridilla, Elysiella and Pattyclaya,is confirmed. Also, the genus Placobranchus is transferred tothe Elysiidae. phylogenetically important characters are identifiedand phylogenetic relationships within the family are discussed. A pathogenic fungus of pea, Mycosphaerella pinodes, secretesa so-called "suppressor" in its pycnospore germination fluid.The suppressor blocks the defense responses and induces localsusceptibility (accessibility) in pea plants to agents thatare not pathogenic in pea. The suppressor nonspecifically inhibitsthe ATPase activity in plasma membranes prepared from pea, soybean,kidney bean, cowpea and barley plants. However, cytochemicalstudies by electron microscopy indicate that the suppressorspecifically inhibits the ATPase in pea cell membranes, butnot in those of four other plant species tested. That is, thespecificity of the suppressor appears at the cell and/or tissuelevel, but is not evident in vitro. Furthermore, the inhibitoryeffect of the suppressor is temporary because the ATPase activityrecovers 9 h after the treatment. A similar effect was observedafter inoculation with M. pinodes but not with a nonpathogenof pea, M. ligulicola. The role of the suppressor in host-parasitespecificity is discussed. Diatom seasonal succession and interannual variability werestudied using laminated sediments from Saanich Inlet, BritishColumbia, for the years 1900–1991. Frozen sediment coresallowed fine-scale sampling of laminae for each year. Thus,three ‘seasons’ for each year were identified basedon species composition. Thalassiosira species were indicatorsof spring deposition. Skeletonema costatum was abundant in samplesfollowing Thalassiosira, probably deposited in late spring andsummer. Rhizosolenia sp. was most abundant in fall/winter samples.Diatom stratigraphies were related to sea surface temperature,salinity, sea level and the Pacific North American Index (PNA)using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). CCA showed thatspecies of a particular season generally had optima for temperatureand salinity characteristic of that time. Interannual changesin diatom species composition and abundance were most prevalentin the decades 1920–1940, with the exception of S.costatumwhich showed cyclic changes in abundance. Skeletonema was moreabundant during periods of cool temperatures, while littoraldiatoms were more abundant during times of heavy winter rains.Sea level was an important variable in CCA and while its relationshipto diatoms is not clear, it may be related to variations innutrient supply to diatoms in surface waters.  相似文献

A new species of Oxychilus Fitzinger from the Ligurian Apennines(Italy) is described. The new species is particularly characterizedby its penial complex which has a very slender proximal peniswith variable inner sculpture and a widened distal penis. Theproximal penis inner structure consists of a series of longitudinalpleats which may often be crenulated, undulated or fragmentedto form rows of papillae, providing new evidence to supportthe opinion that this is not a valid diagnostic character forseparating Oxychilus into the nominal subgenus and OrtiziusForcart. Immunoblot analysis using a monoclonal antibody specific tophytochrome B (phyB) suggest that this protein is undetectablein the hy3 mutant of Arabidopsis. Photophysiological experimentsrevealed that hy3 mutants do not display end-of-day far-redgrowth responses. Thus, this particular phytochrome responseseems to be mediated in large part by phyB. In laboratory tests the terrestrial gastropods Arion fasciatus,Deroceras reticulatum, Arianta arbustorum and Bradybaena fruticumpreferred control leaf discs over discs treated with an aqueoussuspension of crushed conspecifics. The response to suspensionsof different species was weaker. The strength of the responseincreased with the concentration of the suspension. The suspension'seffect in deterring feeding was inactivated within 18 to 32hours. Hunger reduced normal responsiveness to conspecific fluids;the quality of the control food also affected the response.The results also imply that ranking among individuals is labile.Spraying lettucc with the suspension affected the dispersalof the animals only in early summer. The article discusses thebiological significance of the response and the use of substancesobtained from slugs and snails in the control of pest gastropods. Phytoplankton were collected over five austral summers (1987–88through 1991–92) to examine seasonal and annual fluctuationsin species composition and biovolume in Lake Fryxell, a perenniallyice-covered lake located in the Dry Valleys of South VictoriaLand, Antarctica. Lake Fryxell has perennial gradients of salinity,dissolved oxygen and nutrients. We found that algal speciesdiversity was low (56 taxa were collected), confirming the resultsof previous short-term studies. The phytoplankton consistedprimarily of cryptophyte and chlorophyte flagellates, and filamentouscyanobacteria. The presence of filamentous cyanobacteria, whichhave not been reported as abundant in this lake by previousworkers, may represent a significant ecological change. Eachaustral summer, one dominant species contributed >70% ofthe total biovolume; Chroomonas lacustris was dominant in 1987–88,while Cryptomonas sp. dominated the phytoplankton in the remaining4 years. No species succession occurred during the austral summer.Some common taxa were vertically stratified (Oscillatoria limnetica,Phormidium angustissimum, Pyramimonas sp., Oscillatoria sp.),while others showed no distinct vertical stratification (Chlamydomonassubcaudata, Cryptomonas sp.). The stratification of the phytoplanktonreflects the gradients of nutrients and light, and the stabilityof the water column.  相似文献

The effects of a range of constant temperatures on gametogenesiswere investigated in two freshwater snail species which occursympatrically in the Umsin-dusi River, Natal, South Africa,Physa acuta (invasive) and Bulinus tropicus (endemic). Bothwere shown to be simultaneous hermaphrodites with slight protandry.An increase in temperature accelerated the process of gametogenesisbut P. acuta responded more rapidly to these changes than B.tropicus. This, coupled with the greater fecundity and shorterincubation period of P. acuta, gives it a reproductive advantageover the endemic species, providing a possible explanation forthe invasive's success in rapidly repopulating disturbed riverinehabitats. Constitutive expression of a type of stress-inducible proteinsincluding pathogenesisrelated (PR) 1 protein and ubiquitin-relatedprotein in an interspecific hybrid of Nicotiana glutinosa xNicotiana debneyi was noted. In the two parental species andin tobacco, these proteins are not expressed in healthy plantsbut they are induced by stresses such as the formation of locallesions after viral infection and treatment of salicylic acid.A second type of stress-inducible genes, such as the genes forbasic ß-1,3-glucanase and putative proteinase inhibitorwere regulated normally, and were not expressed constitutivelyin the hybrid. In the transgenic hybrid, into which a chimericgene consisting of 5' upstream of tobacco PRla gene and ß-glucuronidase(GUS) gene was introduced, very high GUS activity was expressedconstitutively even at healthy state. An abnormal response bythis hybrid to plant hormones was also noted. A possible mechanismfor the unregulated expression of the stress-inducible genesin the interspecific hybrid is discussed. In water samples collected from the middle of Admiralty Bay(King George Island 62°08'S 58°25'W) between February1990 and January 1991, 17 Tintinnina species were noted. TotalTintinnina numbers in summer were very high (up to 5000 cellsm–3), but species diversity was low, consisting mainlyof Cymatocylis affnislconvallaria, forma convallaria. Duringaustral winter, cell numbers were very low, but species compositionwas diverse. Cymatocylis affnislconvallaria, forma affinis,and C.affmis/convallaria, forma convallaria, the polymorphicforms of one species C.affinis/convallaria, appear to be interchangeableduring the year. The transition from one form to the other occursin the spring and autumn. The typical Tintinnina polymorphismcan be attributed to the prevailing environmental conditions.  相似文献

The seasonal variation and life history of the pelagic chaetognatha,Sagitta elegans Verrill, in Toyama Bay, southern Japan Sea,were investigated using a time series of 0–500 m verticalhauls with a Norpac net from 1 February 1990 to 30 January 1991.Nine species of one genus occurred in Toyama Bay throughoutthe year, including the cold-water species S.elegans. Therewas no remarkable variation in abundance throughout the year,although many individuals were collected in August. Juvenilesoccurred mostly in spring and summer, from late March to August.Adults (Stage 3) occurred in all seasons, except summer. Thebody length of adults ranged from 26 to 30 mm. There were twoprincipal spawning periods. One was in March-May and the otherwas in August. Life spans of both cohorts were 10–12 months.Copepods were major prey of S.elegans inhabiting Toyama Bay.The annual mean food-containing ratio (FRC) was 6.1%, but values>10% occurred in February, April, May, July and September.  相似文献

Planktonic larvae of decapod crustaceans were collected monthlyfrom July 1991 to June 1992 by pumping during nocturnal floodand ebb tides to establish seasonal larval abundance patternsin an inlet of the Bay of Cdiz. Additional 24 h series of sampleswere collected seasonally (July 1991, October 1991, January1992 and May/June 1992) during spring and neap tides to analyselarval abundance in relation to the main environmental cycles(diel, tidal and lunar phases) and vertical position in thewater column. First zoeae were the most abundant stage for mostspecies, representing 97.6% of all individuals collected. ZoeaI abundance was higher in spring and swmner and, on most samplingoccasions, there was a net output from the inlet to the bay.Five species (Liocarcinus arcuatus and Liocarcinus vernalis,Uca tangeri, Diogenes pugilator and Panopeus africanus) represented60% of total individuals caught. The seasonal occurrence offirst zoeae of the most abundant species indicated two differentreproductive patterns: species with a short reproductive periodand species spawning year round. Zoea I of several species (Panopeusafricanus, Uca tangeri, Pachygrap sus marmoratus, Processa spp.)were significantly more abundant during ebb tides and theirlater larval stages were scarcely collected, suggesting thatthese larvae are released in the inlet and exported to the bay.Conversely, a net input of first zoeae was observed for otherspecies (D.pugilator and Pinnotheres pinnotheres), but theirlater larval stages were also scarcely collected. Such importationcould be a larval rhythm artifact due to release of larvae inthe bay that drifted into the inlet by tidal currents. The crabIlia nucleus, whose later larval stages were collected frequently,was the only species that seemed to complete its life cyclewithin the bay. These results suggest that the studied inletwas primarily used by decapods as an adult habitat and spawningground, while larval development occurred in open sea. Sincevertical migration was not observed for exported larvae, thetidal synchronization of female release seemed to be the mostprobable mechanism of larval exportation. There were no significantdifferences between larval release during spring and neap tides.  相似文献

The abundance, life span, growth and production of the mud snailsHydrobia minoricensis, H. ulvae and H. ventrosa in a semi-naturallagoon system were studied by taking monthly samples at threesites during 1991 and 1992. The most abundant species, H. minoricensisoccurred at mean densities of 12834 to 26264 snails m–2(10.7 to 25.8g dry weigh m–2), depending on the site.The least abundant species, H. ulvae, occurred at mean densitiesof 185 to 353 snails m–2 (3.2 to 2.2g dry weight m–2).The numerical abundance and biomass of the three Hydrobia specieswere positively related to the biomass of benthic macroalgae(P<0.01). Although H. ulvae egg capsules were recorded throughoutthe year, newly hatched snailsof this species were not observed,in contrast to the other two species. The early spring and summercohorts of H. minoricensis and H. ventrosa seemed to be themost numerous. The average life spans of these two species wereestimated to be about 18 and 13 months respectively. Annualproduction estimates for the whole lagoon system were 29.0 (6.3),5.5 (0.8) and 5.2 (1.0)g dry weight (ash-free dry weight) m–2yr–1 for H. minoricensis, H. ulvae and H. ventrosa respectively.The annual P/B ratio was about 2 for H. minoricensis and H.ventrosa.
