This study reports on the biocontrol role birds play in caterpillar pest control of tea plantations of Northeast India. In this area large tracts of tea plantations have been extensively defoliated by the recent invasion of two forest-dwelling geometrid looper caterpillars, Hyposidra spp. and a lymantriid hairy caterpillar, Arctornis submarginata. This exacerbated tea herbivory by two resident pest caterpillars, Biston suppressaria and Eterusia magnifera. Currently there are no identified resident insect predators for any life stage of Hyposidra spp. and A. submarginata. Larvae of these pests drop from tea bushes using salivary thread, allowing caterpillars to escape from insect predators. The study identified 38 native insectivorous bird species in tea plantations, of which four species (Asian-pied starling, Chestnut-tailed starling, Jungle Myna, Red-vented Bulbul) could be potential control agents of looper and hairy caterpillar pests. These species had high population densities. Their cumulative abundances represented a major proportion of the total bird community during both the infested (86.44%) and non-infested phase (75.34%). They foraged in mixed-species flocks in both tea foliage and on the ground. This behavior is suited to capture foliage-living and dropped caterpillars that were flushed from tea bushes by foraging birds. Abundance and species richness of overall tea layer-foraging birds were higher in infested phase when compared to non-infested phase. The predation rate of four bird species of the foraging flock varied significantly. These results suggest that birds should be considered as important biological control agent of caterpillar pests of tea and considered in pest management plans.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the whistled songs of two allopatric populations of the European starling and spotless starling in NE Spain. The results show that European starlings in NE Spain sing the same whistled themes found earlier in other European populations and confirm the universal character of these themes. There are some differences between European starlings from NE Spain and other populations: rising phases appear for Inflection theme high-form, Inflection theme and Simple theme, and also differences of rate of emission appear for others (Rhythmic theme). Harmonic theme has not been found. Likewise, the first analysis of the spotless starling's whistled song shows that it shares the same general whistled song structure with the European starling; whistles have similar structural parameters (modulation, duration, frequency) and can be classified in the same categories or themes; a new theme appears, the Trilled theme, which has not been found to date in the European starling. Dialectal areas have been found in both species for the same themes (Inflection theme, Simple theme). The males of both studied populations have larger repertoires in comparison to other studied populations of the European starling.  相似文献

We investigated habitat selection and diets of two co-occurring endemic bird species (rufous-tailed weaver, Histurgops ruficauda , Fischer's lovebird, Agapornis fischeri ) and four other species with which they associated in mixed feeding flocks (red-billed buffalo weaver, Bubalornis niger , white-headed buffalo weaver, Dinemellia dinemellii , superb starling, Lamprotornis superbus , and Hildebrandt's starling, Lamprotornis hildebrandti ) during the dry season in Serengeti National Park Tanzania. Mixed species flocks could facilitate food acquisition and/or act as anti-predator mechanisms. Five of the six species selected grassland habitat over Acacia habitat along transects. Analysis of species association, using Cole's coefficient of association, showed that both rufous-tailed weavers and superb starlings co-occurred with red-billed buffalo weavers. Superb starlings were negatively associated with Fischer's lovebird, Hildebrandt's starling and white-headed buffalo weavers. Diet analysis revealed that the rufous-tailed weaver, white-headed buffalo weaver, and red-billed buffalo weaver were generalists eating both insects and seeds, whereas Fischer's lovebird and superb starling were specialists, selecting only seeds and insects respectively. These data offer some support for the hypothesis that mixed species flocks facilitate mutual food searching.  相似文献

采用封闭式流体压力呼吸计,分别在5-35℃和5-40℃的环境温度范围内测定了白头鹎(Pycnonotussinensis)和丝光椋鸟(Sturnussericeus)的代谢率、热传导和体温等指标,探讨其代谢产热特征。结果显示:在环境温度(Ta)为5-35℃时,白头鹎的体温基本维持恒定,平均温度为40.3±0.1℃,热中性区为26.6-32.8℃,基础代谢率为73.10±4.11mlO2/h,是体重预期值的79%;Ta在5-26℃范围内,代谢率(MR)与Ta呈负相关,回归方程为:MR[mlO2/h]=265.37-7.24Ta(℃);Ta在5-30℃范围内,热传导值最低且基本保持恒定,平均为0.24±0.01mlO2/g·h·℃,是体重预期值的126%。丝光椋鸟的热中性区为27.6-34.5℃,平均体温为40.5±0.1℃(5-40℃),基础代谢率为160.64±9.20mlO2/h,是体重预期值的90%;最低热传导为0.16±0.05mlO2/g·h·℃,是体重预期值的129%。在5-25℃范围内,MR与Ta的回归方程为:MR[mlO2/h]=377.96-7.88Ta(℃)。白头鹎和丝光椋鸟的基本生物学特征为:较高的体温,热传导和上临界温度,较宽的热中性区和较低的代谢率,符合南方小型鸟类的代谢特征.  相似文献

Following a previous comparison of the peroneus longus muscle of the quail and the starling, the present paper deals with a comparative study of this muscle in two birds of the order Gallinaceae, the quail and the bantam, bearing in mind certain data found in the starling. The study deals with the types of muscle fibres, their frequency in various parts of the muscle, their lipid content and their innervation. In the quail, two types of fibres are found, with a low and high lipid content respectively, while the bantam and starling have also a third, intermediate type. These intermediate fibres have a characteristically intermediate lipid content, peripherally situated nuclei and areas with a myofibrillar structure. The proportion of the two of three types of fibres varies with the species and in the distal and proximal parts of the muscle. The innervation of the peroneus longus muscle is different in the three species. In the quail, the two types of fibres have only one arboriform motor end-plate per fibre. In the bantam, the two types of homologous fibres also have only one motor end-plate, but with fewer arborifications. The intermediate fibre type, on the other hand, is innervated by several small nerve endings for each muscle fibre. This type of multiple innervation is also found in the starling. The peroneus longus muscle is thus functionally different in the two birds of the order Gallinaceae, whereas the rapid and slow system of innervation is found in the bantam and the starling. In the quail and the bantam, there is a strong positive correlation between the diameter of the muscle fibre and the longitudinal extent of the motor end-plate. This correlation is not marked in the starling. The characteristics of the innervation revealed by the cholinesterase activity concentrated in the synaptic grooves were confirmed by a direct study of the nerve fibres, using the Bielschowsky-Gros method. In the quail only 'en plaque' endings are found, while in the bantam and the starling both 'en plaque' and 'en grappe' endings are present. A parallel is drawn between the differences in function of the peroneus longus muscle and the characteristic features of its histology and innervation in the three species.  相似文献

Birds, in temperate zones, present marked breeding seasonality as well as marked daily organization of reproductive behavior, especially laying. Intra-specific variability and determinants of this pattern have been investigated mainly in domestic non-passerine birds. The present study analyzed the daily temporal organization of laying in a free-living species, the European starling, Sturnus vulgaris. Breeding in a starling colony was monitored for five consecutive years using a non-invasive method (infrared video camera) to precisely estimate laying times. European starlings present a marked daily laying rhythm, ovipositions occurring only during a morning species-specific temporal window. Inside this laying window, time intervals between successive eggs varied greatly among females. Contrary to many species, the light/dark cycle did not appear to control laying time in European starlings, but daily variations of the ultraviolet composition of the solar spectrum appeared to be a possible Zeitgeber of this behavior.  相似文献

Alien invasive species have detrimental effects on invaded communities. Aliens do not invade a vacuum, but rather a community consisting of native and often other alien species. Our current understanding of the pathways and network of interactions among multiple invasive species within whole communities is limited. Eradication efforts often focus on a single target species, potentially leading to unexpected outcomes on interacting non-target species. We aimed to examine the interaction network in a cavity-nesting community consisting of native and invasive birds. We studied the nesting cavities in the largest urban park in Israel over two breeding seasons. We found evidence for a complex interaction network that includes negative, neutral and positive interactions, but no synergistic positive interactions among aliens. Three major factors shaped the interaction network: breeding timing, nesting preferences and the ability to excavate or widen the cavities, which were found to be a limited resource. Cavity enlargement by the early-breeding invasive rose-ringed parakeet may enhance breeding of the invasive common myna in previously unavailable holes. The myna excludes the smaller invasive vinous-breasted starling, a direct competitor of the primary nest excavator, the native Syrian woodpecker. Therefore, management and eradication efforts directed towards the common myna alone may actually release the vinous-breasted starling from competitive exclusion by the common myna, increasing the negative impact of the vinous-breasted starling on the native community. As found here, interactions among multiple alien species can be crucial in shaping invasion success and should be carefully considered when aiming to effectively manage biological invasions.  相似文献

Changes in agricultural land-use have been suggested to contribute to the decline of several bird species through negative effects on their food supply during breeding. One important change in land-use has been loss of pastures, especially permanent pastures. In this study we investigated how different forms of agricultural land-use affected foraging success of a declining bird species, the European starling Sturnus vulgaris . We let caged starlings forage in different forms of agricultural fields and determined time spent foraging and foraging success. The starlings' activity level (time spent actively foraging) as well as the number of prey caught per time unit was strongly related to the abundance of prey in soil samples. Also the body mass change during the experiment was positively related to activity level and prey capture rate. We found consistent differences in foraging variables between habitats. In spring sown grain starlings were least active and found fewer prey items at a lower rate than in any other habitat. The other three habitats differed less, but in general mowed hay fields appeared slightly more valuable than the cultivated and natural pastures. We did not find any differences between natural and cultivated pastures in foraging variables. Thus, starling foraging success is higher in grass-covered fields than in cultivated fields, but the management of the grass-covered fields mattered less. The results are consistent with starlings having higher population densities and breeding success in areas with higher availability of pasture. We suggest that the physical structure of the habitat (sward height) and moisture may be additional variables that need to be taken into account to explain starling breeding density and success in the agricultural landscape.  相似文献

Superb starlings (Lamprotornis superbus) are separate nesting plural cooperative breeders endemic to East Africa that show high levels of reproductive conflict and low reproductive skew. I isolated 31 polymorphic microsatellite loci from the superb starling genome and characterized them in approximately 31 individuals. The numbers of alleles per locus ranged from two to 16 and observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.03 to 0.88. Many of these loci amplified in other passerine species including the European starling, Sturnus vulgaris, and a variety of other starlings and mockingbirds.  相似文献

Interference competition has proved to be a factor of successful establishment of invasive species. This type of competition may have a stronger impact when native species have temporal niche overlap with the invasive species. The ring-necked parakeet Psittacula krameri has been successfully introduced in many countries and its interspecific agonistic behavior has already been reported. The purpose of this study is to analyze the territorial and preemptive interference competition between the ring-necked parakeet and native bird species in a recently colonized area. We used an empirical approach by recording video sequences in gardens equipped with bird feeders in winter. Our results showed that the ring-necked parakeet was the most frequent species at the feeders. Several native species showed temporal niche overlap with the ring-necked parakeet, the highest overlap being with the starling Sturnus vulgaris. The starling was also the species most impacted by interference competition with the parakeet. Our study suggests that, by being most frequently present at the feeders, by demonstrating the most agonistic behavior and by hindering access to food of the other species, the ring-necked parakeet is a superior competitor and may compete with native bird species.  相似文献

Although the presence of feathers in the nest is widespread among birds, it has not been previously suggested that feathers can be used as sexual signals. Females of the spotless starling (Sturnus unicolor) regularly carry feathers to their nest, mostly during laying and incubation. We show that the arrangement of these feathers was non-random with respect to the side (obverse or reverse) placed upwards (which can be viewed from the nest entrance). Feathers of the wood pigeon (Columba palumbus) and the spotless starling, which exhibit higher ultraviolet and visible reflectance on their reverse side, were predominantly placed with this side upwards. On the contrary, feathers of the jay (Garrulus glandarius) were predominantly found exhibiting the obverse side, which possesses higher reflectance in this species. Feathers of the azure-winged magpie (Cyanopica cyana), with similar reflectance values on either side, were placed indiscriminately in obverse and reverse positions. The results suggest that feathers are arranged to maximize their conspicuousness within the nest and hence that they might be potentially used as intraspecific signals.  相似文献

Nesting features of four species of cavity-nesting birds—common starling (Sturnus vulgaris L.), great tit (Parus major L.), common redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus L.), and pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca Pall.)—have been studied in city. Under urban conditions, number of eggs in a nest of a redstart is significantly larger, while for great tit and pied flycatcher it is significantly smaller; differences between the populations of starling are insignificant. Success of reproduction for the cavity-nesters is significantly higher in a city and exceeds the reference value for all the species by 10–20%. The number of chicks per a reproduction attempt is also higher in city for all the species. Starling population in city exceeds the reference population in the success of reproduction mainly due to a decrease in the percentage of abandoned eggs. The main reasons for an increase in the reproduction success of other species at the urbanized locality are weakened pressure of predators and a decrease in the percentage of abandoned broods.  相似文献

We determined age-dependent changes in plasma and brain cholinesterase (ChE) activity for two species of passerines: house wren (Troglodytes aedon) and European starling (Sturnus vulgaris, starling). In plasma from nestlings of both species, total ChE activity increased with age, acetycholinesterase (AChE, EC 3.1.1.7) activity declined rapidly immediately after hatching, and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE, EC 3.1.1.8) activity increased steadily. For both species, total ChE and BChE activities and the BChE:AChE ratio in plasma were significantly greater in adults than nestlings suggesting trends observed in nestlings continue post fledging. In older nestlings and adults, AChE activity in plasma was significantly greater and BChE:AChE ratio less in house wrens than starlings. For house wrens as compared with starlings, ChE activity in brain increased at a significantly greater rate with age in nestlings and was significantly greater in adults. However, ChE activity in brain was similar at fledging for both species suggesting that the increase in ChE in brain is more directly related to ontogeny than chronologic age in nestlings of passerines. For both species, ChE activity increased significantly with brain weight of nestlings but not adults. House wrens hold similar patterns of age-dependent change in ChE activity in common with starlings but also exhibit differences in AChE activity in plasma that should be considered as a factor potentially affecting their relative toxicologic response to ChE inhibitors.  相似文献

Red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus; blackbird) and European starling (Sturnus vulgaris; starling) nestlings were dosed with either 2.0 mg/kg body mass chlorpyrifos, 50.0 mg/kg body mass dimethoate, or a propylene glycol carrier in situ. Four growth measurements (body mass, culmen, tarsus, wing) were recorded from nestlings to determine if these organophosphorus compounds caused perturbations in development at sublethal concentrations. Blackbird nestlings were more sensitive to chlorpyrifos than starling nestlings were more sensitive to dimethoate than blackbird nestlings. This was in contrast to reported adult LD50 values where the reverse was true. Blackbird nestlings were more tolerant of a substantially higher concentration of dimethoate than the adult LD50. The sensitivity of starling nestlings to dimethoate was similar to adults. In contrast, juveniles of both species were more sensitive to chlorpyrifos than adults. After the initial 24 hr, surviving nestlings dosed with either chemical recovered and continued their development. Exposure to dimethoate caused significant depression in starling body mass during the initial 24 hr period. Survivors obtain body mass equal to controls within 48 hr post dosing. The research presented here demonstrates that the simple supposition that passerine nestlings are typically more sensitive to toxins than adults does not always hold true. It also indicates that sensitivity relationships among adults do not necessarily apply to their nestlings.  相似文献

Previous works have demonstrated that the information supported by a bird distress call is encoded both by the energy distribution among harmonics and the temporal evolution of the frequency modulation. In the present study, using these parameters, we compared long-range information transfer in a dense vegetatian environment between the starling Sturnus vulgaris and the blackbird Turdus merula distress calls. It appears that excess attenuation of high frequencies (higher than 4 kHz) after a longrange propagation is responsible for modifications in distress call spectra. The energy of propagated signals tends to be concentrated in a 1.5-4-kHz bandwidth whatever the initial spectrum. Owing to its broad spectrum (0.8-7 kHz), the starling distress call is greatly modified. On the contrary, owing to a narrower spectrum (2–5.5 kHz), the blackbird distress call is relatively preserved. The blackbird distress call appears to be well-adapted to long-range transmission in an environment with dense vegetation. In contrast, the starling distress call is far more easily degraded by propagation. Nevertheless, frequency modulation of the starling call is preserved and message decoding remains possible even if message reliability may diminish. This result is examined from an etho-ecological point of view, taking into account both habitat and social structure of both birds.  相似文献

Cooperative breeding, where individuals other than the parents help to raise offspring, occurs in only ~9% of bird species. Although many starlings (Sturnidae) are cooperative breeders, the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) has rarely been observed exhibiting this behavior. Only two other records exist, one of which was limited to a juvenile giving food to chicks that had already been collected by a parent (and hence providing limited help). Herein, we report a case of cooperative breeding by a juvenile European starling, which represents the second with any evidence of the juvenile collecting food independently and the first to document the extent of such help in the form of feeding rates. Over a period of at least 3 days, a juvenile starling assisted two parents to feed their second brood of the year, and it fed the chicks at the same rate as the adults (~3.5 feeds per hour). In considering potential explanations for this behavior, we conducted an ancestral state estimation of cooperative breeding across starlings and were able to eliminate the possibility that this is a rarely expressed behavior inherited from cooperatively breeding ancestors. Instead, we propose that our observations point to a behavioral innovation, which may be in response to environmental change such as climate change (which has previously been associated with cooperative breeding). Researchers working on birds should be alert to such behavior to determine whether this apparently new breeding strategy will increase as a potential adaptation to environmental change.  相似文献

The applicability of mass spectrometric cleaved amplified polymorphic sequences (MS-CAPS) was evaluated in several plant species. This method consists of genomic DNA extraction from plant tissues, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of a specific genetic region, enzymatic digestion of amplicons, and followed by rapid analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Crude extracts obtained by homogenizing plant tissues in water were used as templates for short PCR amplifications for MS-CAPS analysis. For most plant species tested, these crude extracts could be used directly as templates for PCR. However, extracts from lettuce leaves and stems showed enzymatic browning as a result of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity, and were not suitable PCR templates. The addition of cysteine to the homogenizing solution inhibited enzymatic browning and did not affect the other MS-CAPS procedures, including PCR amplification, uracil-DNA glycosylase treatments, or MALDI-TOF MS analysis. Thus, this method inhibits PPO in crude extracts, allowing them to be used directly for MS-CAPS analysis.  相似文献

We generated the first complete phylogeny of extant taxa in a well-defined clade of 26 starling species that is collectively distributed across Eurasia, and which has one species endemic to sub-Saharan Africa. Two species in this group-the European starling Sturnus vulgaris and the common Myna Acridotheres tristis-now occur on continents and islands around the world following human-mediated introductions, and the entire clade is generally notable for being highly social and dispersive, as most of its species breed colonially or move in large flocks as they track ephemeral insect or plant resources, and for associating with humans in urban or agricultural landscapes. Our reconstructions were based on substantial mtDNA (4 kb) and nuclear intron (4 loci, 3 kb total) sequences from 16 species, augmented by mtDNA NDII gene sequences (1 kb) for the remaining 10 taxa for which DNAs were available only from museum skin samples. The resulting mitochondrial gene tree embedded within a multilocus framework shows that the well-studied taxa S. vulgaris/unicolor are the sister lineage to the remaining members of the radiation, from which other relatively early lineages gave rise to forms that are now nomadic or locally migrant in Africa (Creatophora) and western Asia (Pastor). The remaining taxa form a clade with a complicated biogeographic history primarily in central and eastern Asia; this group contains a range of sedentary to highly migratory taxa, as well as widely distributed species and single-island endemics such as the highly endangered Bali myna (Leucopsar). Several groups of species in the genus Acridotheres have low magnitudes of within-group divergence and likely diversified via their respective colonization of islands. The taxonomy of this entire group has remained highly volatile over the past century; we propose dividing these 26 species among 11 reciprocally monophyletic genera (Acridotheres, Poliopsar, Temenuchus, Sturnornis, Leucopsar, Gracupica, Agropsar, Pastor, Creatophora, and Sturnus).  相似文献

Rapid detection of Oenococcus oeni in wine by real-time quantitative PCR   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
AIMS: To develop a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for rapid detection and quantification of Oenococcus oeni in wine samples for monitoring malolactic fermentation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Specific primers and fluorogenic probe targeted to the gene encoding the malolactic enzyme of O. oeni were developed and used in real-time PCR assays in order to quantify genomic DNA either from bacterial pure cultures or wine samples. Conventional CFU countings were also performed. The PCR assay confirmed to be specific for O. oeni species and significantly correlated to the conventional plating method both in pure cultures and wine samples (r = 0.902 and 0.96, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The DNA extraction from wine and the real-time PCR quantification assay, being performed in ca 6 h and allowing several samples to be concurrently processed, provide useful tools for the rapid and direct detection of O. oeni in wine without the necessity for sample plating. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Rapid quantification of O. oeni by a real-time PCR assay can improve the control of malolactic fermentation in wines allowing prompt corrective measures to regulate the bacterial growth.  相似文献
