Increasingly, wildlife managers and land managers are challenged to maintain the viability of large mammal populations. Although the moose (Alces alces) is an ecologically, economically, and culturally important ungulate species found throughout most of Sweden, little is known about its ecology throughout the southern part of the country. We collected baseline ecological data on spatial and habitat use patterns in urbanized southwestern Sweden by fitting 22 adult moose (13 F, nine M) with global positioning system (GPS) radio collars. Home range size of cows did not differ among seasons (P > 0.10); however, bulls had larger home ranges during fall than all other seasons (P < 0.010). Mean home range size of males during fall and spring was larger than females during any season (P < 0.010). We used a Euclidean distance-based approach to analyze multi-scale habitat selection by moose. Moose of both sexes and during all seasons selected boreal forest and mires when establishing a home range (P < 0.10). Moose had seasonal differences in habitat selection within their home range (P 0.001), and generally selected clear-cuts and early successional forests, mature coniferous forests, and glades, but avoided agricultural areas and open water. Habitat and space use characteristics of moose in our urbanizing study area were similar to characteristics reported for moose in forest-dominated landscapes of Fennoscandia.  相似文献

Migration and reproduction of the Caspian Lamprey, Caspiomyzon wagneri, in the Shirud River were investigated during late-March to early-May at water temperatures ranging from 11 to 21.25°C. We examined the effect of water temperature on timing of spawning migrations. There was a significant negative relationship between temperature and intensive migration of Caspian Lamprey (p < 0.05). The most intensive migration of lampreys was at night (21:00–3:00 h) and when the water temperatures averaged 16°C (34.43%). The overall sex ratio (male to female) was 1.07 to 1. The individual absolute fecundity was 31 ‘758–51’ 198 eggs (mean±SD—41,924 ± 5,382). The egg diameter was 0.780–1.151 (0.92 ± 0.081) mm. The individual relative fecundity varies from 80.3 to 148.1 (107.2 ± 15.1) eggs per 1 mm of length and from 260.8 to 677.4 (397.6 ± 93) eggs per 1 g of weight. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females was 5.83–31.44 (11.22 ± 4.30).  相似文献

This study was performed to determine the effects of copper proteinate on performance, blood chemistry, lipid peroxidation status, and organs as well as copper deposition in the liver and eggs of laying hens. Seventy-two 30-week-old Bovans laying hens were distributed into four groups with three replicates. Animals were fed basal diet containing at least 17% crude protein and 2,800 kcal/kg metabolizable energy supplemented with either 0, 150, 300, or 450 mg/kg copper as copper proteinate. Supplementation of 150 and 300 mg/kg copper increased egg production, whereas 450 mg/kg copper decreased (p < 0.001). Liver copper levels were elevated in 300 and 450 mg/kg copper-supplemented groups (p < 0.001). Egg copper contents increased in all treatment groups (p < 0.01). An increase in glucose (p < 0.001) and decreases in albumin (p < 0.01) and total cholesterol (p < 0.05) levels were determined with 300 and 450 mg/kg copper. Supplementation of 450 mg/kg copper increased alkaline phosphatase and gamma glutamyl transpeptidase activities (p < 0.05), malondialdehyde, and high-density lipoprotein levels (p < 0.01) but decreased alanine aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase activities (p < 0.01). No gross and microscopic changes were observed in the liver and kidneys. These results indicated that 150 and 300 mg/kg copper increased egg production without having marked adverse effects, but 450 mg/kg copper altered some blood chemistry variables and reduced egg production in laying hens.  相似文献

In 1997, the Montreal Biodome obtained five barndoor skates (Dipturus laevis) from the waters off Boston, Massachusetts. Six years later, those specimens began reproducing, and the first egg case was collected in November 2003. Since then, 73 hatchlings have been born and raised. Egg cases were observed year round, and annual fecundity was measured for the first time: one female laid 69 eggs in 2005, 85 in 2006 and 115 in 2007. Egg incubation was longer than believed previously, ranging from 342 to 494 days. Hatching occurred throughout the year. Hatchlings averaged 193 mm total length and 128 mm disk width and weighed 32 g. They were fed krill and diced fish. All but one survived the first month. A photo identification system was useful in recognizing two groups of 10 specimens during their first year, and transponders could be inserted in the wing muscles of 1‐year‐old skates. Total lengths at birth and at age 2 were similar to the data reported from the wild, suggesting a similar growth pattern in captivity. The reproduction characteristics of the barndoor skate were compared with those of two other skate species currently bred at the Montreal Biodome, the winter skate (Leucoraja ocellata) and the thorny skate (Amblyraja radiata). The spatial cohesiveness of a group is an important element that characterizes the social structure of group-living species. Moreover, remaining cohesive is crucial if individuals are to coordinate their activities and reach collective decisions. We measured interindividual spacing in a group of wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) to assess the spatial cohesiveness of a social group quantitatively. We used simultaneous focal animal sampling, with 2 observers recording individuals’ locations with a global positioning system (GPS) during 3 seasons. Interindividual distances differed among seasons; they were short in autumn (mean ± SD: 25.6 ± 20.1 m), intermediate in winter (mean ± SD: 46.3 ± 35.7 m), and long in summer (mean ± SD: 62.3 ± 47.1 m). Measurements taken in summer revealed extremely wide spacing (maximum: 1225 m), suggesting subgrouping. Distances also varied with activity during each season; they were short during resting and grooming, intermediate during foraging, and long during moving. Group cohesion was also influenced by food distribution. More group members were ≤20 m of the focal individual during foraging on clumped food than foraging on scattered food in each season, and the group foraged on clumped food most frequently in autumn. Individuals were also likely to aggregate at resting/grooming sites and clumped food patches and to disperse when moving within a day. These results demonstrate that Japanese macaques show considerable variation in spatial cohesiveness both within short time periods, e.g., 1 d, and among seasons, and that they adjust group cohesiveness flexibly depending on the food conditions and foraging tactics.  相似文献

Concentration level of nine elements viz. Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Co, Na, K, Ca, and Li were determined in leaves and roots of Asparagus curillus (Buch.-Ham.) ex Roxb. collected from four different altitudes in three seasons by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The overall concentration of K was found to be highest, whereas the level of Cu was lowest. The maximum concentrations of Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Co, Na, K, Ca, and Li were found to be 97.0 ± 1.5, 28.0 ± 7.0, 44.0 ± 7.3, 1138.0 ± 18.5, 91.0 ± 6.2, 381.0 ± 7.8, 9508.0 ± 7.8, 3076.0 ± 6.4, and 78.0 ± 4.6 mg/kg, respectively.  相似文献

The growth rate of abalone post larvae of Haliotis rufescens fed ad libitum with a benthic monoalgal diatom culture maintained as monocultures on a semi-commercial scale, was evaluated and correlated with the biochemical composition of the diatoms. The cell size (7.0 × 4.0 μm to 21.0 × 7.5 μm), protein percentage (7.42% to 13.66%), and ash content (49.03% to 59.61%) were different among diatom strains; lipid percentage, nitrogen free extract, and energy content (Kcal g−1) were similar among diatom strains. The values of essential and non-essential amino and fatty acids composition differed among diatom strains. Differences in the abalone shell length and orthogonal analyses revealed postlarval growth was dependent on the quality of the food source. Postlarvae abalone displaying the longest shell lengths were fed Nitzschia thermalis var. minor and Amphiprora paludosa var. hyalina (1,712.0 ± 61 μm and 1,709 ± 67 μm, respectively), followed by Navicula incerta (1,413.3 ± 43 μm). The fatty acid content of benthic diatoms and abalone growth rate were not correlated.  相似文献

Recent studies on global climate change report that increase in seawater temperature leads to coastal ecosystem change, including coral bleaching in the tropic. In order to assess the effect of increased seawater temperature on a temperate coastal ecosystem, we studied the inter-annual variation in productivity of Laminaria japonica using long-term oceanographic observations for the Uwa Sea, southern Japan. The annual productivity estimates for L. japonica were 2.7 ± 2.5 (mean ± SD) kg wet wt. m−1 (length of rope) (2003/2004), 1.0 ± 0.6 kg wet wt. m−1 (2004/2005) and 12.1 ± 12.5 kg wet wt. m−1 (2005/2006). Our previous study using the same methodology at the same locality reported that the productivity was estimated for the 2001/2002 (33.3 ± 15.2 kg wet wt. m−1) and 2002/2003 (34.0 ± 8.7 kg wet wt. m−1) seasons. Productivity in 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 was significantly lower than in years 2001/2002, 2002/2003 and 2005/2006. A comparison of oceanographic conditions among the 5 years revealed the presence of threshold seawater temperature effects. When the average seawater temperature during the first 45 days of each experiment exceeded 15.5°C, productivity was reduced to about 10 % of that in cooler years. Moreover the analysis of growth and erosion rates indicates that when the seawater temperature was over 17.5°C, erosion rate exceeded growth rate. Thus, an increase of seawater temperature of just 1°C during winter drastically reduces the productivity of L. japonica in the Uwa Sea.  相似文献

The triggering of transitory egg desertion in fasting and incubating blue petrels (Halobaena caerulea, nocturnal burrowing seabirds living in the subantarctic region) was investigated by continuously monitoring both body temperature (T sto) and egg temperature (T egg) with a telemetry system, and by measuring body mass (BM) loss. The birds were kept captive in their burrow and incubated day and night without any interruption; there was no day-night cycle in T sto and T egg, which averaged 39.9 °C and 32.0 °C, respectively. There was no evidence of hypothermia as a way to save energy in this fasting situation. Egg desertion occurred at night and was an abrupt and definitive phenomenon reflected by a simultaneous fall in T egg and a peak in T sto. After egg desertion, a distinct day-night cycle of body temperature was observed, T sto being 0.6 °C higher during night-time (P < 0.05), probably reflecting increased nocturnal activity. BM at egg desertion averaged 166.7 ± 3.8 g in telemetered birds and 164.4 ± 1.6 g in␣a group of free-living birds. Throughout fasting, the␣specific daily BM loss remained at 46 ± 1 g · kg−1 · day−1, but increased sharply below a critical BM of 160.0 ± 2.5 g. Thus, fasting incubating blue petrels spontaneously desert their egg when reaching a BM threshold. This BM is very close to a critical value in fasting birds and mammals that corresponds to a critical depletion of fat stores and to a shift from lipid to protein utilization. This strongly suggests that such a metabolic shift triggers behavioural changes leading to egg desertion and refeeding, which is of great relevance to the understanding of the long-term control of food intake and BM. The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence of hypocalcemia and its correlation with dietary intake of calcium (DICa) and urinary calcium excretion (UCaE) in pregnant women. Healthy pregnant women (n = 543) were enrolled consecutively. DICa was calculated form dietary history. Serum calcium (SCa) and 24-h UCaE was measured. Student t test and Chi-square tests were used to compare the continuous and categorical data in women with and without hypocalcemia (SCa ≤ 8.7 mg/dL). Linear regression was applied for determining the independent variables for hypocalcemia. The age and gestation (mean ± SD) were 21.9 ± 2.5 years and 18.0 ± 3.5 weeks, respectively. The body mass index (BMI; mean ± SD) was 23.3 ± 3.9 kg/m2. Seventy-one percent women had an education of less than 10 years. The DICa and SCa were 325 ± 198 mg and 8.1 ± 1.5 mg/dL, respectively. The prevalence of hypocalcemia was 66.4% (362/545); all being asymptomatic. There was no significant difference in women with and without hypocalcemia in terms of weight, BMI, monthly family income, DICa, UCaE, and their obstetric outcome. Daily dietary calcium intake was less than the recommended dietary allowances. There was a high prevalence of asymptomatic hypocalcemia in pregnant women of low socio-economic status which was unrelated to their overall nutritional status and daily calcium intake. It did not have any adverse effect on the immediate pregnancy outcome.  相似文献

The present study was aimed at comparing the number of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) propagules found in soil from a mature tropical forest and that found in an abandoned cornfield in Noh-Bec Quintana Roo, Mexico, during three seasons. Agricultural practices can dramatically reduce the availability and viability of AMF propagules, and in this way delay the regeneration of tropical forests in abandoned agricultural areas. In addition, rainfall seasonality, which characterizes deciduous tropical forests, may strongly influence AMF propagules density. To compare AMF propagule numbers between sites and seasons (summer rainy, winter rainy and dry season), a “most probable number” (MPN) bioassay was conducted under greenhouse conditions employing Sorgum vulgare L. as host plant. Results showed an average value of 3.5 ± 0.41 propagules in 50 ml of soil for the mature forest while the abandoned cornfield had 15.4 ± 5.03 propagules in 50 ml of soil. Likelihood analysis showed no statistical differences in MPN of propagules between seasons within each site, or between sites, except for the summer rainy season for which soil from the abandoned cornfield had eight times as many propagules compared to soil from the mature forest site for this season. Propagules of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi remained viable throughout the sampling seasons at both sites. Abandoned areas resulting from traditional slash and burn agriculture practices involving maize did not show a lower number of AMF propagules, which should allow the establishment of mycotrophic plants thus maintaining the AMF inoculum potential in these soils.  相似文献

The reproduction of the plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae) was investigated in Guoluo District at an elevation of 4,000 m on the Qinghai–Tibetan plateau, China, from April 2007 to August 2008. Reproduction was seasonal, and the breeding season lasted from April to late June/early July. Adults produced two litters in each year, and the mean litter size, estimated by counting the number of embryos in utero, was 3.3 ± 0.1 (n = 52) in 2007 and 3.2 ± 0.1 (n = 66) in 2008. The timing of reproduction showed high inter-annual variation; lower precipitation and the concomitant delay in spring vegetation phenology may have retarded the onset of the breeding season in 2007 compared with 2008. The most frequent litter sizes were 3 and 4, which together comprised 71.2% and 83.3% of litters in May and June of 2007 and 2008, respectively. Compared with previous studies, reproduction was highly variable between geographic areas. Pikas produced between one and five litters per year in different regions of the plateau over different breeding seasons. This geographic and inter-annual variation appeared to be associated with the duration of plant growth at each site, suggesting that plateau pikas adjust the length of their breeding season to match the period when sufficient energy is available to support the high energy demands of reproduction.  相似文献

Egg predation is a major cause of reproductive failure among birds, and can compromise the viability of affected populations. Some egg predators aggregate near colonially breeding birds to exploit the seasonal increase of prey resources. We investigated spatial and temporal variations in the abundance of an egg predator (little raven Corvus mellori; Corvidae) to identify whether ravens aggregate spatially or temporally to coincide with any of three potential prey species: burrow‐nesting little penguin (Eudyptula minor; Spheniscidae), short‐tailed shearwater (Ardenna tenuirostris; Procellariidae), and surface‐nesting silver gull (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae; Laridae). We derived spatially explicit density estimates of little ravens using distance sampling along line transects throughout a calendar year, which encompassed little penguin, short‐tailed shearwater and silver gull breeding and non‐breeding seasons. High raven abundance coincided temporally with penguin and gull egg laying periods but not with that of shearwaters. The spatial distribution of raven density corresponded with the little penguin colony but not with shearwater or gull colonies. Thus, the presence of little penguin eggs in burrows correlated strongly with little raven activity, and this implies that little ravens may have learnt to exploit the plentiful subsurface food resource of little penguin eggs. Corvid management may be required to maintain the viability of this socially and economically important penguin colony.  相似文献

This study deals with two range-extending brown algae from Tahitian coral reefs, Sargassum mangarevense and Turbinaria ornata; their alginate properties, mannitol and phenolic contents, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were determined. Turbinaria ornata showed the richest alginate content with the highest extraction yield (19.2 ± 1.3% dw). Their alginates also exhibited the highest viscosity (50 ± 18 mPa.s), but the M:G ratios (mannuronic acid to glucuronic acid) of alginates (1.25–1.42) were similar in both species. Alginate yield displayed spatial variations, but no significant seasonal changes. The highest mannitol content was found in S. mangarevense (12.2 ± 2.1% dw) during the austral winter. With respect to other tropical Fucales, both algae exhibited also a high phenolic content (2.45–2.85% dw) with significant spatio-temporal variations. Furthermore, high antioxidant activity and activity against Staphylococcus aureus were also detected in extracts. According to these preliminary results, these two range-extending algae are of key interest in numerous industrial areas.  相似文献

Recently recruited urchins from the same brood, but with different initial sizes, may respond differently to similar environmental factors. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the effects of starvation and diet on the survival, growth rates in size and weight, and gonad index among small and large sub-adult purple sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. Small urchins ranged from 7.3 to 7.8 mm and large urchins from 11.8 to 14.1 mm (test diameters). Two independent experiments were performed. In the first experiment, sea urchins were fed during 22 weeks on Egregia menziesii (ad libitum) and for only 1 day month−1 (starved condition). Feeding regime significantly affected survival, somatic growth rate in size and weight, and gonad index, with higher means in the ad libitum treatments than in starving conditions. A recurrent cannibalism event by conspecifics occurred in small sea urchins under starving conditions. In the second experiment, sea urchins were fed during 13 weeks ad libitum with four diets: kelp (E. menziesii), coralline algae (Bossiella orbigniana), eelgrass (Phyllospadix scouleri) and a mixed diet of the three species. Survival was not affected by diet or urchin size, but diet significantly affected somatic growth rate in size and weight and gonad index. Kelp promoted the highest growth rate (2.23 ± 0.21 mm month−1), the mixed diet produced an intermediate growth (1.26 ± 0.21 mm month−1), while the lowest values corresponded to coralline algae and the eelgrass (0.30 ± 0.12 and 0.10 ± 0.03 mm month−1, respectively, means ± SE). The mean growth rate of small urchins (averaging all diets) was higher than in large specimens (1.17 ± 0.37 and 0.77 ± 0.28 mm month−1, respectively).  相似文献

Little is known about how animals from tropical and subtropical climates adjust their energy expenditure to cope with seasonal changes of climate and food availability. To provide such information, we studied the thermal physiology, torpor patterns and energetics of the nocturnal blossom-bat (Syconycteris australis 18 g) from a subtropical habitat in both summer and winter. In both seasons, S. australis frequently entered daily torpor at ambient temperatures between 12 and 25°C when food and water were withheld. Unlike patterns observed in temperate animals, mean minimum metabolic rates during torpor were lower in summer (0.47 ± 0.07 ml O2 g−1 h−1) than in winter (0.75 ± 0.11 ml O2 g−1 h−1). Body temperatures during torpor were regulated at 19.3 ± 1.0°C in summer and at 23.4 ± 2.0°C in winter. Torpor bout duration was significantly longer in summer (7.3 ± 0.6 h) than in winter (5.5 ± 0.3 h), but in both seasons, bout duration was not affected by ambient temperature. Consequently, average daily metabolic rates were also significantly lower in summer than in winter. Body temperatures and metabolic rates in normothermic bats did not change with season. Our findings on seasonal changes of torpor in this bat from the subtropics are opposite to those made for many species from cold climates which generally show deeper and longer torpor in winter and are often entirely homeothermic in summer. More pronounced torpor in subtropical S. australis in summer may be due to low or unpredictable nectar availability, short nights which limit the time available for foraging, and long days without access to food. Thus, the reversed seasonal response of this subtropical bat in comparison to temperate species may be an appropriate response to ecological constraints. A better understanding of habitat use and home range size for an exotic fallow deer (Dama dama L.) population in coastal Georgia is needed to understand the relationship between this introduced species and the barrier island ecosystem. These spatial requirements will aid in management decisions to limit negative impacts to the deer or sensitive habitats. We describe annual and seasonal home range and habitat use of seven fallow deer fitted with GPS collars. Home ranges of females averaged 130.3 ± 0.45 ha based on a 95% local convex hull (LoCoH) nonparametric kernel method. Home ranges of adult males were highly variable, ranging from 56.9 to 354.8 ha. We examined site fidelity by analyzing shifts in core areas and percent overlap across seasons. Only one individual exhibited a seasonal range shift; all other deer demonstrated a high level of site fidelity. Based on compositional analysis of habitat use versus availability, fallow deer avoided salt marshes but showed individual variation in selection of other habitats. Maritime shrub was the most commonly preferred habitat type on the barrier island. Fallow deer have adapted to effectively use available habitats on the barrier island and have successfully excluded native white-tailed deer from recolonizing LSSI.  相似文献

Bifidobacterium longum grew at 65 L pilot scale of the membrane bioreactor (MBR), externally fitted with ceramic membrane (0.7 m2). Cell mass at the MBR reached 22.18 g L−1 as dry cell weight in 12 h, which is 8.44 times higher than cell mass attained at the vial culture. The growth rate in the vial culture was μ = 0.385 h and at the batch culture was μ = 1.13 h in the exponential period and μ = 0.31 h−1 in the stationary period. In the fed-batch mode was μ = 1.102 h−1 for 6 h with inoculation and declined to μ = 0.456 h−1 with feeding of feed medium. The growth rate at the MBR was μ = 0.134 h−1. The number of viable cells was 6.01 × 1012 cfu L−1 at the batch culture, but increased to 1.15 × 1014 cfu L−1 at the MBR culture. The specific growth rate of viable cell number (colony-forming units per liter, per hour) improved by 6.01 times from the batch to the MBR culture. The wall shear stress mainly generated by the pump, and the membrane incorporated into the MBR was controlled during the cultivation at the MBR. The viability of B. longum declined to under 10% in the first 2 weeks of the 4-week stability test (40°C) as B. longum was exposed to over wall shear stress 713 Pa, but the viability improved to 30–40% in wall shear stress of 260 Pa or STR culture. The loss in the cell viability can be saved by managing with wall shear stress during the cultivation at the MBR.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to determine the concentration of trace elements present in scalp hair sample of schizophrenic patients and to find out the relationship between trace elements level and nutritional status or socioeconomic factors. The study was conducted among 30 schizophrenic male patients and 30 healthy male volunteers. Patients were recruited from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University by random sampling. Hair trace element concentrations were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy and analyzed by independent t test, Pearson’s correlation analysis, regression analysis, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Mn, Zn, Ca, Cu, and Cd concentrations of schizophrenic patients were 3.8 ± 2.31 μg/gm, 171.6 ± 59.04 μg/gm, 396.23 ± 157.83 μg/gm, 15.40 ± 5.68 μg/gm, and 1.14 ± 0.89 μg/gm of hair sample, while those of control subjects were 4.4 ± 2.32 μg/gm, 199.16 ± 27.85 μg/gm, 620.9 ± 181.55 μg/gm, 12.23 ± 4.56 μg/gm, and 0.47 ± 0.32 μg/gm of hair sample, respectively. The hair concentration of Zn and Ca decreased significantly (p = 0.024; p = 0.000, respectively) and the concentration of Cu and Cd increased significantly (p = 0.021; p = 0.000, respectively) in schizophrenic patients while the concentration of Mn (p = 0.321) remain unchanged. Socioeconomic data reveals that most of the patients were poor, middle-aged and divorced. Mean body mass indices (BMIs) of the control group (22.26 ± 1.91 kg/m2) and the patient group (20.42 ± 3.16 kg/m2) were within the normal range (18.5−25.0 kg/m2). Pearson’s correlation analysis suggested that only Ca concentration of patients had a significant positive correlation with the BMI (r = 0.597; p = 0.000) which was further justified from the regression analysis (R 2 = 44%; t = 3.59; p = 0.002) and one-way ANOVA test (F = 3.62; p = 0.015). A significant decrease in the hair concentration of Zn and Ca as well as a significant increase in the hair concentration of Cu and Cd in schizophrenic patients than that of its control group was observed which may provide prognostic tool for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. However, further work with larger population is suggested to examine the exact correlation between trace element level and the degree of disorder.  相似文献

Primates spend about half of their lives at sleeping sites, and their choice of sleeping sites may affect individual survival. We identified a total of 88 trees used by proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) as night sleeping sites on 16 nights from June to September 2008 in riverine, mangrove, and mixed mangrove–riverine forests along the Garama River, a tributary of the Klias River, in the west of Sabah, Malaysia. We recorded 11 variables for each tree, including the species, physical structure, distance from the riverbank, and connectivity with surrounding trees. We compared sleeping trees with 114 trees with ≥30 cm girth at breast height (GBH) located ≤50 m of the riverbank in 8 botanical plots (total 1 ha). Trees in the plots represented the general vegetation patterns of the study area. Choice of sleeping trees did not depend on the tree species. Although sleeping trees included trees ≤46 m from the river, those closer to riverbanks (5–35 m, n = 76) were more likely to be used as sleeping sites. Compared to the available trees, sleeping trees had larger trunks (mean±SD = 143.6 ± 56.9 cm GBH), and were taller (mean±SD = 34.3 ± 8.1 m), with greater number (median = 6; range = 12) and larger (mean±SD = 24.1 ± 15.2 cm circumference) main branches. They were also located near to other trees, with overlapping branches, creating good arboreal connectivity. Choice of sleeping trees by proboscis monkeys is likely to be related to risks of predation and injury from falling, as well as ease of social interaction and efficiency of locomotion.  相似文献
