This study aimed to develop and validate a finite element (FE) model of a human clavicle which can predict the structural response and bone fractures under both axial compression and anterior–posterior three-point bending loads. Quasi-static non-injurious axial compression and three-point bending tests were first conducted on a male clavicle followed by a dynamic three-point bending test to fracture. Then, two types of FE models of the clavicle were developed using bone material properties which were set to vary with the computed tomography image density of the bone. A volumetric solid FE model comprised solely of hexahedral elements was first developed. A solid-shell FE model was then created which modelled the trabecular bone as hexahedral elements and the cortical bone as quadrilateral shell elements. Finally, simulations were carried out using these models to evaluate the influence of variations in cortical thickness, mesh density, bone material properties and modelling approach on the biomechanical responses of the clavicle, compared with experimental data. The FE results indicate that the inclusion of density-based bone material properties can provide a more accurate reproduction of the force–displacement response and bone fracture timing than a model with uniform bone material properties. Inclusion of a variable cortical thickness distribution also slightly improves the ability of the model to predict the experimental response. The methods developed in this study will be useful for creating subject-specific FE models to better understand the biomechanics and injury mechanism of the clavicle.  相似文献

The modal analysis of a human tibia consisted of characterizing its dynamic behavior by determining natural frequency, damping ratio and mode shapes. Two methods were used to perform the modal analysis: (1) a finite element method (structural model); (2) an experimental modal analysis (modal model). The experimental modal model was used to optimize the structural model. After optimization, differences in results between the two models were found to be due only to mechanical properties and mass distribution. The influences of boundary conditions and geometric properties (such as inertia and length) were eliminated by the finite element model itself. The percent relative error between the two methods was approximately 3%, corresponding to the standard deviation of the measured frequencies. For the frequency range considered, the mode shapes were bending modes in two different vibration planes (latero-medial and sagittal), with a slight torsion effect due to the twisted geometry of the tibia.  相似文献

Metatarsal stress fracture is a common injury observed in athletes and military personnel. Mechanical fatigue is believed to play an important role in the etiology of stress fracture, which is highly dependent on the resulting bone strain from the applied load. The purpose of this study was to validate a subject-specific finite element (FE) modeling routine for bone strain prediction in the human metatarsal. Strain gauge measurements were performed on 33 metatarsals from seven human cadaveric feet subject to cantilever bending, and subject-specific FE models were generated from computed tomography images. Material properties for the FE models were assigned using a published density-modulus relationship as well as density-modulus relationships developed from optimization techniques. The optimized relationships were developed with a ‘training set’ of metatarsals (n = 17) and cross-validated with a ‘test set’ (n = 16). The published and optimized density elasticity equations provided FE-predicted strains that were highly correlated with experimental measurements for both the training (r2  0.95) and test (r2  0.94) sets; however, the optimized equations reduced the maximum error by 10% to 20% relative to the published equation, and resulted in an X = Y type of relationship between experimental measurements and FE predictions. Using a separate optimized density-modulus equation for trabecular and cortical bone did not improve strain predictions when compared to a single equation that spanned the entire bone density range. We believe that the FE models with optimized material property assignment have a level of accuracy necessary to investigate potential interventions to minimize metatarsal strain in an effort to prevent the occurrence of stress fracture.  相似文献

Computational biomechanical models are useful tools for supporting orthopedic implant design and surgical decision making, but because they are a simplification of the clinical scenario they must be carefully validated to ensure that they are still representative. The goal of this study was to assess the validity of the generation process of a structural finite element model of the proximal femur employing the digital image correlation (DIC) strain measurement technique. A finite element analysis model of the proximal femur subjected to gait loading was generated from a CT scan of an analog composite femur, and its predicted mechanical behavior was compared with an experimental model. Whereas previous studies have employed strain gauging to obtain discreet point data for validation, in this study DIC was used for full field quantified comparison of the predicted and experimentally measured strains. The strain predicted by the computational model was in good agreement with experimental measurements, with R(2) correlation values from 0.83 to 0.92 between the simulation and the tests. The sensitivity and repeatability of the strain measurements were comparable to or better than values reported in the literature for other DIC tests on tissue specimens. The experimental-model correlation was in the same range as values obtained from strain gauging, but the DIC technique produced more detailed, full field data and is potentially easier to use. As such, the findings supported the validity of the model generation process, giving greater confidence in the model's predictions, and digital image correlation was demonstrated as a useful tool for the validation of biomechanical models.  相似文献

A validation study was conducted to determine the extent to which computational ankle contact finite element (FE) results agreed with experimentally measured tibio-talar contact stress. Two cadaver ankles were loaded in separate test sessions, during which ankle contact stresses were measured with a high-resolution (Tekscan) pressure sensor. Corresponding contact FE analyses were subsequently performed for comparison. The agreement was good between FE-computed and experimentally measured mean (3.2% discrepancy for one ankle, 19.3% for the other) and maximum (1.5% and 6.2%) contact stress, as well as for contact area (1.7% and 14.9%). There was also excellent agreement between histograms of fractional areas of cartilage experiencing specific ranges of contact stress. Finally, point-by-point comparisons between the computed and measured contact stress distributions over the articular surface showed substantial agreement, with correlation coefficients of 90% for one ankle and 86% for the other. In the past, general qualitative, but little direct quantitative agreement has been demonstrated with articular joint contact FE models. The methods used for this validation enable formal comparison of computational and experimental results, and open the way for objective statistical measures of regional correlation between FE-computed contact stress distributions from comparison articular joint surfaces (e.g., those from an intact versus those with residual intra-articular fracture incongruity).  相似文献

Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of disability and injury-related death. To enhance our ability to prevent such injuries, brain response can be studied using validated finite element (FE) models. In the current study, a high-resolution, anatomically accurate FE model was developed from the International Consortium for Brain Mapping brain atlas. Due to wide variation in published brain material parameters, optimal brain properties were identified using a technique called Latin hypercube sampling, which optimized material properties against three experimental cadaver tests to achieve ideal biomechanics. Additionally, falx pretension and thickness were varied in a lateral impact variation. The atlas-based brain model (ABM) was subjected to the boundary conditions from three high-rate experimental cadaver tests with different material parameter combinations. Local displacements, determined experimentally using neutral density targets, were compared to displacements predicted by the ABM at the same locations. Error between the observed and predicted displacements was quantified using CORrelation and Analysis (CORA), an objective signal rating method that evaluates the correlation of two curves. An average CORA score was computed for each variation and maximized to identify the optimal combination of parameters. The strongest relationships between CORA and material parameters were observed for the shear parameters. Using properties obtained through the described multiobjective optimization, the ABM was validated in three impact configurations and shows good agreement with experimental data. The final model developed in this study consists of optimized brain material properties and was validated in three cadaver impacts against local brain displacement data.  相似文献

Total ankle replacement remains a less satisfactory solution compared to other joint replacements. The goal of this study was to develop and validate a finite element model of total ankle replacement, for future testing of hypotheses related to clinical issues. To validate the finite element model, an experimental setup was specifically developed and applied on 8 cadaveric tibias. A non-cemented press fit tibial component of a mobile bearing prosthesis was inserted into the tibias. Two extreme anterior and posterior positions of the mobile bearing insert were considered, as well as a centered one. An axial force of 2 kN was applied for each insert position. Strains were measured on the bone surface using digital image correlation. Tibias were CT scanned before implantation, after implantation, and after mechanical tests and removal of the prosthesis. The finite element model replicated the experimental setup. The first CT was used to build the geometry and evaluate the mechanical properties of the tibias. The second CT was used to set the implant position. The third CT was used to assess the bone-implant interface conditions. The coefficient of determination (R-squared) between the measured and predicted strains was 0.91. Predicted bone strains were maximal around the implant keel, especially at the anterior and posterior ends. The finite element model presented here is validated for future tests using more physiological loading conditions.  相似文献

Finite element (FE) models can allow computer simulations of impact loading, providing a useful companion to cadaveric testing. These models allow injury evaluations to be conducted under a variety of conditions, but must be validated against experimental data. An FE model of a cadaveric tibia was developed using geometry from CT scans, and the quality of the mesh was evaluated. Loading and boundary conditions from experimental tests were simulated, and the model was optimised to best represent the response of natural bone to impacts. The model was shown to have good agreement for impact force, duration, impulse and strain during simulation of three non-injurious and one injurious axial impact when compared with experimental test data for the specimen. Failure criteria were evaluated for their ability to predict fracture. This model of the tibia can be used for future injury prediction assessment studies.  相似文献

Four finite element (FE) models of intact and distal femur of knee replacements were validated relative to measured bone strains. FE models of linear tetrahedrons were used. Femoral replacements with cemented stemless, cemented and noncemented femoral stems of the PFC Sigma Modular Knee System were analyzed. Bone strains were recorded at ten locations on the cortex. The magnitude of the FE bone strains corresponded to the mean measured strains, with an overall agreement of 10%. Linear regression between the FE and mean experimental strains produced slopes between 0.94 and 1.06 and R(2) values between 0.92 and 0.99. RSME values were less than 12%. The FE models were able to adequately replicate the mechanical behavior of distal femur reconstructions.  相似文献

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a successful procedure for osteoarthritis. However, some patients (19%) do have pain after surgery. A finite element model was developed based on boundary conditions of a knee rig. A 3D-model of an anatomical full leg was generated from magnetic resonance image data and a total knee prosthesis was implanted without patella resurfacing. In the finite element model, a restarting procedure was programmed in order to hold the ground reaction force constant with an adapted quadriceps muscle force during a squat from 20° to 105° of flexion. Knee rig experimental data were used to validate the numerical model in the patellofemoral and femorotibial joint. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses of Young’s modulus of the patella cartilage, posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) stiffness, and patella tendon origin were performed. Pearson’s correlations for retropatellar contact area, pressure, patella flexion, and femorotibial ap-movement were near to 1. Lowest root mean square error for retropatellar pressure, patella flexion, and femorotibial ap-movement were found for the baseline model setup with Young’s modulus of 5 MPa for patella cartilage, a downscaled PCL stiffness of 25% compared to the literature given value and an anatomical origin of the patella tendon. The results of the conducted finite element model are comparable with the experimental results. Therefore, the finite element model developed in this study can be used for further clinical investigations and will help to better understand the clinical aspects after TKA with an unresurfaced patella.  相似文献

In this study, the force and stress distribution within the anteromedial (AM) and posterolateral (PL) bundles of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in response to an anterior tibial load with the knee at full extension was calculated using a validated three-dimensional finite element model (FEM) of a human ACL. The interaction between the AM and PL bundles, as well as the contact and friction caused by the ACL wrapping around the bone during knee motion, were included in the model. The AM and PL bundles of the ACL were simulated as incompressible homogeneous and isotropic hyperelastic materials. The multiple-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) knee kinematics of a cadaveric knee were first obtained using a robotic/universal force-moment sensor testing system. These data were used as the boundary conditions for the FEM of the ACL to calculate the forces in the ACL. The calculated forces were compared to the in situ force in the ACL, determined experimentally, to validate the model. The validated FEM was then used to calculate the force and stress distribution within the ACL under an anterior tibial load at full extension. The AM and PL bundles shared the force, and the stress distribution was non-uniform within both bundles with the highest stress localized near the femoral insertion site. The contact and friction caused by the ACL wrapping around the bone during knee motion played the role of transferring the force from the ACL to the bone, and had a direct effect on the force and stress distribution of the ACL. This validated model will enable the analysis of force and stress distribution in the ACL in response to more complex loading conditions and has the potential to help design improved surgical procedures following ACL injuries.  相似文献

Patient-specific finite element (PSFE) models based on quantitative computer tomography (qCT) are generally used to "predict" the biomechanical response of human bones with the future goal to be applied in clinical decision-making. However, clinical applications require a well validated tool that is free of numerical errors and furthermore match closely experimental findings. In previous studies, not all measurable data (strains and displacements) were considered for validation. Furthermore, the same research group performed both the experiments and PSFE analyses; thus, the validation may have been biased. The aim of the present study was therefore to validate PSFE models with biomechanical experiments, and to address the above-mentioned issues of measurable data and validation bias. A PSFE model (p-method) of each cadaver femur (n = 12) was generated based on qCT scans of the specimens. The models were validated by biomechanical in-vitro experiments, which determined strains and local displacements on the bone surface and the axial stiffness of the specimens. The validation was performed in a double-blinded manner by two different research institutes to avoid any bias. Inspecting all measurements (155 values), the numerical results correlated well with the experimental results (R(2) = 0.93, slope 1.0093, mean of absolute deviations 22%). In conclusion, a method to generate PSFE models from qCT scans was used in this study on a sample size not yet considered in the past, and compared to experiments in a douple-blinded manner. The results demonstrate that the presented method is in an advanced stage, and can be used in clinical computer-aided decision-making.  相似文献

A three-dimensional finite element model of the proximal tibia has been developed to provide a base line for further modeling of prosthetic resurfaced tibiae. The geometry for the model was developed by digitizing coronal and transverse sections made with the milling machine, from one fresh tibia of average size. The load is equally distributed between the medial and lateral compartments over contact areas that were reported in the literature. An indentation test has been used to measure the stiffness and the ultimate strength of cancellous bone in four cadaver tibiae. These values provided the statistical basis for characterising the inhomogeneous distribution of the cancellous bone properties in the proximal tibia. All materials in the model were assumed to be linearly elastic and isotropic. Mechanical properties for the cortical bone and cartilage have been taken from the literature. Results have been compared with strain gage tests and with a two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element model both from the literature. Qualitative comparison between trabecular alignment, and the direction of the principal compressive stresses in the cancellous bone, showed a good relationship. Maximum stresses in the cancellous bone and cortical bone, under a load which occurs near stance phase during normal gait, show safety factors of approximately eight and twelve, respectively. The load sharing between the cancellous bone and the cortical bone has been plotted for the first 40 mm distally from the tibial eminence.  相似文献

Finite element (FE) method is a proven powerful and efficient tool to study the biomechanics of the human lumbar spine. However, due to the large inter-subject variability of geometries and material properties in human lumbar spines, concerns existed on the accuracy and predictive power of one single deterministic FE model with one set of spinal geometry and material properties. It was confirmed that the combined predictions (median or mean value) of several distinct FE models can be used as an improved prediction of behavior of human lumbar spine under identical loading and boundary conditions. In light of this improved prediction, five FE models (L1-L5 spinal levels) of the human lumbar spine were developed based on five healthy living subjects with identical modeling method. The five models were extensively validated through experimental and computational results in the literature. Mesh convergence and material sensitivity analysis were also conducted. We have shown that the results from the five FE models developed in this paper were consistent with the experimental data and simulation results from the existing literature. The validated modeling method introduced in this study can be used in modeling dysfunctional lumber spines such as disc degeneration and scoliosis in future work.  相似文献

Local wall stress is the pivotal determinant of the heart muscle's systolic function. Under in vivo conditions, however, such stresses cannot be measured systematically and quantitatively. In contrast, imaging techniques based on magnetic resonance (MR) allow the determination of the deformation pattern of the left ventricle (LV) in vivo with high accuracy. The question arises to what extent deformation measurements are significant and might provide a possibility for future diagnostic purposes. The contractile forces cause deformation of LV myocardial tissue in terms of wall thickening, longitudinal shortening, twisting rotation and radial constriction. The myocardium is thereby understood to act as a densely interlaced mesh. Yet, whole cycle image sequences display a distribution of wall strains as function of space and time heralding a significant amount of inhomogeneity even under healthy conditions. We made similar observations previously by direct measurement of local contractile activity. The major reasons for these inhomogeneities derive from regional deviations of the ventricular walls from an ideal spheroidal shape along with marked disparities in focal fibre orientation. In response to a lack of diagnostic tools able to measure wall stress in clinical routine, this communication is aimed at an analysis and functional interpretation of the deformation pattern of an exemplary human heart at end-systole. To this end, the finite element (FE) method was used to simulate the three-dimensional deformations of the left ventricular myocardium due to contractile fibre forces at end-systole. The anisotropy associated with the fibre structure of the myocardial tissue was included in the form of a fibre orientation vector field which was reconstructed from the measured fibre trajectories in a post mortem human heart. Contraction was modelled by an additive second Piola-Kirchhoff active stress tensor. As a first conclusion, it became evident that longitudinal fibre forces, cross-fibre forces and shear along with systolic fibre rearrangement have to be taken into account for a useful modelling of systolic deformation. Second, a realistic geometry and fibre architecture lead to typical and substantially inhomogeneous deformation patterns as they are recorded in real hearts. We therefore, expect that the measurement of systolic deformation might provide useful diagnostic information.  相似文献

Development of automotive safety systems requires the implementation of active muscle response in HBM, as novel safety systems also interact with vehicle occupants in the pre-crash phase. In this study, active muscle response was implemented using feedback control of a nonlinear muscle model in the right upper extremity of a finite element (FE) HBM. Hill-type line muscle elements were added, and the active and passive properties were assessed. Volunteer tests with low impact loading resulting in elbow flexion motions were performed. Simulations of posture maintenance in a gravity field and the volunteer tests were successfully conducted. It was concluded that feedback control of a nonlinear musculoskeletal model can be used to obtain posture maintenance and human-like reflexive responses in an FE HBM.  相似文献
