It has been suggested that the amount of maternal testosterone allocated into the eggs might be implicated in the process of sex determination. However, recent findings on the effect that female social rank has on the level of egg testosterone suggest that reported associations between male-biased sex ratios and yolk testosterone may represent an indirect hormonal effect mediated by the interdependence among maternal hormones, female social rank, and sex ratio. Here, we report the results of a field experiment in which we manipulated the circulating levels of testosterone in female spotless starlings (Sturnus unicolor) before egg formation. Focal females were controlled in subsequent years to explore possible delayed effects of hormone manipulation on primary sex ratio and social status that could persist because of permanent hormonal change or through hormone-dominance interactions. The results indicate that testosterone-implanted females (T-females) produced significantly more sons than control females (C-females) in the year in which they were manipulated. These differences in offspring sex ratio between T- and C-females persisted in the next 3 years, although no additional hormone treatments were given. These results were not mediated by an eventual effect of testosterone treatment on the quality of the females' mates. A similar proportion of T- and C-females acquired a nest box and bred either in the manipulation year or in Year 1 after manipulation, but T-females tended to be more successful in acquiring a nest box than C-females in Years 2 and 3 after manipulation. These results suggest that added testosterone had a direct role on the acquisition and maintenance of high social rank. Delayed effects of testosterone on primary sex ratio might have been caused by altered endogenous production of T-females. Alternatively, the maintenance of sex ratio differences between T- and C-females long after having being implanted might be attributed to the positive effect that enhanced social rank of T-females has on their circulating testosterone levels.  相似文献

Nestling begging in passerine birds is a complex behaviour that is shaped by a multitude of ecological factors and could be physiologically mediated by varying levels of steroid hormones. Previous research has shown links between sibling competition and testosterone and corticosterone in several bird species. The spotless starling (Sturnus unicolor) is a medium sized passerine in which nestlings compete intensively for resources, often resulting in marked size hierarchies that can have profound effects on their fitness. We tested the hypothesis that an increase in sibling competition levels would result in increases in testosterone and corticosterone in this species. To this end we conducted a brood size manipulation, creating small, medium and large broods. This manipulation had the expected effect on morphology: nestling size and mass decreased with increasing brood size. Androgen levels varied in response to brood size manipulation but, contrary to expectations, the largest concentrations were found in reduced brood sizes. Corticosterone levels increased with increasing brood size, but this effect disappeared when we corrected for the time taken to process nestlings. Cell-mediated immune response was found to decrease with increasing brood size and testosterone levels. The results suggest that the proposed link between testosterone and corticosterone and sibling competition does not hold in this species, and underlines the diversity of species-specific responsiveness to steroids.  相似文献

The hypothesis that eggshell colouration is a sexually selected trait of female birds is based on the fact that biliverdin, the pigment responsible for blue‐green colours of the eggshell, is a potent antioxidant and that only females with high antioxidant capacity can deposit higher concentrations of biliverdin as eggshell pigment. Antioxidants (e.g. carotenoids, vitamins) are also abundant in the egg yolk, which serve as nutrient reserves for the developing embryo, and eggshell colour intensity may reflect maternal investment in yolk antioxidants. Here, we test the relationship between blue‐green eggshell colour intensity and concentration and amount of carotenoids, vitamin A, and vitamin E in the egg yolk of spotless starling Sturnus unicolor, a species for which we have previously shown good evidence of sexual selection driving egg coloration. As could be extrapolated from the hypothesis of sexual selection driving the evolution of blue‐green eggshells, we found that eggshell colour intensity was positively related to the concentration and amount of carotenoids and vitamin E in the yolk. Thus, mothers may use egg colour intensity to signal to fathers the antioxidant status of their offspring. Moreover, we provide evidence suggesting that maternal yolk investment in more coloured eggs can also explain the detected association between feeding decisions of males and egg colour intensity that we have found previously in this species.  相似文献

In mammals, males maintain significantly higher testosterone (T, 'the male hormone') levels than females throughout the year and are typically dominant over females. Our study of the cooperatively breeding rock hyrax (Procavia capensis) demonstrated a distinct exception. In most hyrax social groups that we studied, adult females were at the highest social rank within the group and showed higher than or equal T levels to males. To our knowledge, this is the first reported instance of adult female mammals demonstrating higher T levels than adult males. However, although T levels significantly correlated with rank in males, in females such correlations were not detected, suggesting a more complex interplay between behavior and endocrine factors in this species.  相似文献

Prenatally testosterone (T)-treated female sheep exhibit ovarian and endocrinological features that resemble those of women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which include luteinizing hormone excess, polyfollicular ovaries, functional hyperandrogenism, and anovulation. In this study, we determined the developmental impact of prenatal T treatment on insulin sensitivity indexes (ISI), a variable that is affected in a majority of PCOS women. Pregnant ewes were treated with 60 mg testosterone propionate intramuscularly in cottonseed oil two times a week or vehicle [control (C)] from days 30 to 90 of gestation. T-females weighed less than C-females or males (P < 0.05) at birth and at 5 wk of age. T-females had an increased anogenital ratio. An intravenous glucose tolerance test followed by an insulin tolerance test conducted after an overnight fast at 5, 20, and 30 wk of age (n = 7-8/group) revealed that ISI were higher at 5 than 30 wk of age in C-females, reflective of a developing insulin resistance associated with puberty. T-females had higher basal insulin levels, higher fasting insulin-to-glucose ratio, and higher incremental area under the insulin curve to the glucose challenge. The ISI of T-females was similar to that of males. No differences in ISI were evident between groups at 20 and 30 wk of age. Mean basal plasma glucose concentrations and glucose disappearance and uptake did not differ between groups at any age. Our findings suggest that prenatal T treatment leads to offspring with reduced birth weight and impaired insulin sensitivity in early postnatal life.  相似文献

Although the presence of feathers in the nest is widespread among birds, it has not been previously suggested that feathers can be used as sexual signals. Females of the spotless starling (Sturnus unicolor) regularly carry feathers to their nest, mostly during laying and incubation. We show that the arrangement of these feathers was non-random with respect to the side (obverse or reverse) placed upwards (which can be viewed from the nest entrance). Feathers of the wood pigeon (Columba palumbus) and the spotless starling, which exhibit higher ultraviolet and visible reflectance on their reverse side, were predominantly placed with this side upwards. On the contrary, feathers of the jay (Garrulus glandarius) were predominantly found exhibiting the obverse side, which possesses higher reflectance in this species. Feathers of the azure-winged magpie (Cyanopica cyana), with similar reflectance values on either side, were placed indiscriminately in obverse and reverse positions. The results suggest that feathers are arranged to maximize their conspicuousness within the nest and hence that they might be potentially used as intraspecific signals.  相似文献

Reelin, a large glycoprotein defective in reeler mice, is assumed to determine the final location of migrating neurons in the developing brain. We studied the expression of Reelin in the brain of adult male European starlings that had been treated or not with exogenous testosterone. Reelin-immunoreactive cells and fibers were widely distributed in the forebrain including areas in and around the song control nucleus, HVC. No labeling was detected in other song control nuclei with the exception of nucleus uvaeformis, which was delineated by a dense cluster of Reelin-immunoreactive perikarya. Reelin is thus expressed in areas incorporating new neurons in adulthood, such as HVC. Reelin expression was sharply decreased by testosterone in HVC, nucleus uvaeformis and dorsal thalamus but not in other brain regions. These results are consistent with the idea that seasonal changes in Reelin expression modulate the incorporation of neurons within HVC. The presence of Reelin in other brain areas that do not incorporate new neurons in adulthood indicates, however, that this protein must play other unrelated roles in the adult brain. Additional studies should now be carried out to determine the specific role played by this protein in the seasonal plasticity of the songbird brain.  相似文献

One of the primary assumptions of the immunocompetence hypothesisis that testosterone is immunosuppressive. Although many studiesin birds and mammals have supported this assumption, conflictingresults have been reported in a variety of species. We investigatedthe effects of testosterone manipulation on both cell-mediatedand humoral immunity in adult songbirds, European starlings(Sturnus vulgaris). Male and female starlings were wild-caught,housed in the laboratory, and implanted with either empty silasticcapsules or capsules containing testosterone. Six weeks after implantation, humoral immunity was assessed by injecting thebirds with a novel antigen, keyhole limpet hemocyanin, andmeasuring specific antibody responses 10 and 15 days latervia an enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay. Cell-mediated immunitywas assessed 7 weeks after implantation via intradermal injectionof the T-cell mitogen phytohemagglutinin into the wing web and measuring the degree of swelling 24 h later. Antibody responsesto antigenic challenge were significantly suppressed in testosterone-treatedfemales 10 days post-injection and in both sexes 15 days post-injection.Furthermore, there was a significant inverse relationship betweenindividual variability in antibody responsiveness and plasmatestosterone concentrations. Cell-mediated responses to phytohemagglutininstimulation were also significantly suppressed in testosterone-treatedmales compared to same-sex controls. Testosterone treatmentsignificantly increased plasma corticosterone concentrations compared to controls, and the possibility of this effect mediatingthe immunosuppressive effects of testosterone is discussed. The present study is among the first to demonstrate testosterone-inducedsuppression of both cell-mediated and humoral immunity in aspecies of songbird.  相似文献

The relationships among the members of a population can be visualized using individual networks, where each individual is a node connected to each other by means of links describing the interactions. The centrality of a given node captures its importance within the network. We hypothesize that in mutualistic networks, the centrality of a node should benefit its fitness. We test this idea studying eight individual-based networks originated from the interaction between Erysimum mediohispanicum and its flower visitors. In these networks, each plant was considered a node and was connected to conspecifics sharing flower visitors. Centrality indicates how well connected is a given E. mediohispanicum individual with the rest of the co-occurring conspecifics because of sharing flower visitors. The centrality was estimated by three network metrics: betweenness, closeness and degree. The complex relationship between centrality, phenotype and fitness was explored by structural equation modelling. We found that the centrality of a plant was related to its fitness, with plants occupying central positions having higher fitness than those occupying peripheral positions. The structural equation models (SEMs) indicated that the centrality effect on fitness was not merely an effect of the abundance of visits and the species richness of visitors. Centrality has an effect even when simultaneously accounting for these predictors. The SEMs also indicated that the centrality effect on fitness was because of the specific phenotype of each plant, with attractive plants occupying central positions in networks, in relation to the distribution of conspecific phenotypes. This finding suggests that centrality, owing to its dependence on social interactions, may be an appropriate surrogate for the interacting phenotype of individuals.  相似文献

Fitness consequences of ovicide in a parasitoid wasp   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Ovicide, superparasitism and host rejection are alternative reproductive tactics facing female parasitoid wasps encountering an already-parasitized host. Superparasitism is simply the addition of an egg or a clutch of eggs by the secondary parasitoid, but under ovicide the primary clutch is removed or destroyed. Host rejection occurs if the wasp leaves without laying a clutch. The ectoparasitoid Laelius pedatus (Say) (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) performs ovicide in this situation. Clutch manipulation experiments show that secondary clutches suffer high mortality in competition with primary clutches, which increases with increasing time delay between clutches. Primary clutches however suffer little in competition with secondary clutches, even if there is minimal time delay between clutches. These data suggest that the offspring of ovicidal females are substantially fitter than the offspring of superparasitizing females. Handling time and clutch size do not differ significantly between first (sole) parasitoids and second (ovicidal) parasitoids. The same is true for offspring survival and development time. However, offspring of second females are slightly smaller. This suggests that parasitized and unparasitized hosts are resources of similar quality when ovicide is performed. These data strongly support the predictions of evolutionary models of ovicide. They may also give some insight into the taxonomic distribution of ovicide in parasitoids.  相似文献

Most seasonally breeding songbirds display dramatic seasonal fluctuations in plasma testosterone (T) levels and mate attraction behaviors, including song. However, males of some songbird species, such as the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris), continue to sing at high levels after the breeding season, when T levels are basal. In male starlings song during the breeding season functions mainly to attract mates, whereas song during the nonbreeding season appears unrelated to reproduction. This suggests that song produced in a context unrelated to female courtship, unlike song directed toward females, is not regulated by plasma T. In captive males housed in large outdoor aviaries we explored the relationship between plasma T and song produced during the breeding season within and outside a courtship context. This was achieved by determining the effects of castration and subsequent T treatment on song and mate attraction behaviors in both the presence and the absence of a female. Compared to intact males, castrated males did not show reduced song activity in the absence of a female for at least 6 months after the operation, strongly suggesting that the expression of noncourtship song is not regulated by plasma T. Likewise, we found that experimentally elevating T levels in castrated males did not affect noncourtship song rates. However, control castrated males receiving empty implants tended to show reduced noncourtship song rates after implantation. This may have been due to a suppressive effect caused by the presence of the T-implanted castrated males in the same aviary. In contrast, courtship singing was clearly controlled by plasma T: it was abolished by castration and restored by subsequent T replacement when males were housed both individually and in a group situation. High plasma levels of T also appeared necessary for the activation of three other behavioral traits critical for mate attraction, namely, nesthole occupancy, spending time (singing) in a nesthole, and carrying green nesting material into a nesthole.  相似文献

In many songbirds, females occasionally sing in contexts of high female-female competition. Testosterone may be involved in the activation of song, because testosterone implants elicit female song in many species with rare female song. A possible mechanism for the hormonal control of female song is provided by the challenge hypothesis, which predicts a rise in testosterone in response to aggressive interactions during socially unstable situations. We tested this by comparing faecal testosterone levels in polygynandrous and monogamous female dunnocks. In groups with two to three females (polygynandry and polygyny) males provide less help at each nest than in groups with a single female (monogamy and polyandry). Polygynandrous and polygynous females are aggressive towards one another and attempt to expel rivals. Polygynandrous females had significantly higher testosterone levels than monogamous females. Competition between females that was induced by removal of males caused testosterone levels to rise. Further, female testosterone levels were correlated with the rate of 'tseep' calls, which are produced during aggressive encounters between females. Finally, polygynandrous and polygynous females sang significantly more than monogamous females. To the best of our knowledge, these results provide the first experimental support for the challenge hypothesis in female birds, and suggest that testosterone can regulate facultative female song in songbirds.  相似文献

Fitness consequences of personality: a meta-analysis   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The study of nonhuman personality capitalizes on the fact thatindividuals of many species behave in predictable, variable, and quantifiable ways. Although a few empirical studies haveexamined the ultimate consequences of personality differences, there has been no synthesis of results. We conducted a formalmeta-analysis of published studies reporting fitness consequencesof single personality dimensions to identify general trendsacross species. We found bolder individuals had increased reproductivesuccess, particularly in males, but incurred a survival cost, thus, supporting the hypothesis that variation in boldness wasmaintained due to a "trade-off" in fitness consequences acrosscontexts. Potential mechanisms maintaining variation in explorationand aggression are not as clear. Exploration had a positiveeffect only on survival, whereas aggression had a positive effecton both reproductive success and, not significantly, on survival.Such results would suggest that selection is driving populationsto become more explorative and aggressive. However, limitationsin meta-analytic techniques preclude us from testing for theeffects of fluctuating environmental conditions or other formsof selection on these dimensions. Results do, however, provideevidence for general relationships between personality and fitness, and we provide a framework for future studies to follow in thehopes of spurring more in-depth, long-term research into theevolutionary mechanisms maintaining variation in personalitydimensions and overall behavioral syndromes. We conclude witha discussion on how understanding and managing personality traitsmay play a key role in the captive breeding and recovery programsof endangered species.  相似文献

In order to establish the influence of acute atypical exercise on prolactin and testosterone levels in young female athletes the authors selected a group of 13 short distance runners who were subjected to exercise on a cycle ergometer. Hormone levels were measured before the test, just after the end of test, 30 and 90 minutes thereafter. Significant increase in testosterone concentration appeared immediately after the exercise and 90 minutes after completion of a test testosterone level returned to preexercise levels. Unlike the results of other authors statistically significant decrease in plasma prolactin concentration was found 90 minutes after the end of test.  相似文献

Social norms that regulate reproductive and marital decisions generate impressive cross-cultural variation in the prevalence of kin marriages. In some societies, marriages among kin are the norm and this inbreeding creates intensive kinship networks concentrated within communities. In others, especially forager societies, most marriages are between more genealogically and geographically distant individuals, which generates a larger number of kin and affines of lesser relatedness in more extensive kinship networks spread out over multiple communities. Here, we investigate the fitness consequence of kin marriages across a sample of 46 small-scale societies (12 439 marriages). Results show that some non-forager societies (including horticulturalists, agriculturalists and pastoralists), but not foragers, have intensive kinship societies where fitness outcomes (measured as the number of surviving children in genealogies) peak at commonly high levels of spousal relatedness. By contrast, the extensive kinship systems of foragers have worse fitness outcomes at high levels of spousal relatedness. Overall, societies with greater levels of inbreeding showed a more positive relationship between fitness and spousal relatedness.  相似文献

The fitness consequences of male parental care are central tolife-history models of reproductive effort and the evolutionof social and genetic mating system However in a 4-year study(1992–1995) of Savannah sparrows (Parsserculs sandwichensis)nesting on Kent Island, New Brunswick, Canada, male parentalcare during the nestling stage was only weakly related to offspringquality and survivorship. Females compensated for poor paternalperformance by elevating their feeding rates, and they thusameliorated selection on male parental care. The likelihoodand size of subsequent broods was also unrelated to male feedingeffort, suggesting the absence of some indirect (or ‘female-mediated’)benefits. These results were confirmed by an experiment in whichmale removal resulted in increased female feeding rates buthad little effect on the number or quality of young. In contrast, previous research with multilocus DNA fingerpnnting revealeda strong, positive relationship between a male's parental effortand his subsequent fertilization success. Together, this researchsuggests that the proximate and ultimate targets of male feedingeffort can be disiinct traditional assumptions regarding thefunction of male parental care in birds may therefore be incomplete.  相似文献

Fitness consequences of avian personalities in a fluctuating environment   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Individual animals differ in the way they cope with challenges in their environment, comparable with variation in human personalities. The proximate basis of variation in personality traits has received considerable attention, and one general finding is that personality traits have a substantial genetic basis. This poses the question of how variation in personality is maintained in natural populations. We show that selection on a personality trait with high heritability fluctuates across years within a natural bird population. Annual adult survival was related to this personality trait (behaviour in novel environments) but the effects were always opposite for males and females, and reversed between years. The number of offspring surviving to breeding was also related to their parents' personalities, and again selection changed between years. The observed annual changes in selection pressures coincided with changes in environmental conditions (masting of beeches) that affect the competitive regimes of the birds. We expect that the observed fluctuations in environmental factors lead to fluctuations in competition for space and food, and these, in association with variations in population density, lead to a variation in selection pressure, which maintains genetic variation in personalities.  相似文献

Fitness consequences of helping behavior in the western bluebird   总被引:1,自引:4,他引:1
We examined the fitness consequences of helping behavior inthe western bluebird (Sialia mexicana) at Hastings Reservationin Carmel Valley, California, USA, and tested hypotheses forhow helpers benefit from engaging in alloparental behavior. Both juvenile and adult western bluebirds occasionally helpat the nest During a 12 year period, all adult helpers and mostjuvenile helpers were male. Helpers usually fed at nests ofboth their parents and rarely helped when only one parent waspresent. The frequency of pairs with adult helpers was only7%, but nearly one-third of adult males helped among those withboth parents on the study area. At least 28% were breeders whosenests failed. The propensity to help appears to depend uponparental survival, male philopatry, and the breeding successof potential helpers. Feeding rates were not increased at nestswith juvenile helpers, apparendy because breeding males reducedtheir feeding rates. In contrast, adult helpers increased theoverall rates of food delivery to the nest in spite of a reductionin the number of feeding trips made by both male and femaleparents. Helpers did not derive any obvious direct fitness benefitsfrom helping, but they had greater indirect fitness than nonhelpersdue to increases in nestling growth rates and fledging successat their parents' nests. Helpers fledged fewer offspring intheir first nests than did nonhelpers, suggesting that theywere birds with reduced reproductive potential. Although wehave not yet measured the effect of extrapair fertilizationson the fitness benefits of helping, we calculated the differencein fitness between helpers and nonhelpers as a function of thepotential helper's paternity when breeding independently andhis father's paternity in the nest at which he might help. Inconjunction with constraints on breeding and indirect fitnessbenefits, we predict that relatedness of males to the youngin their own as well as their parents' nests will influencehelping behavior in western bluebirds.  相似文献
