Some molecular phylogenies of plastid-like genes suggest that chloroplasts (the structures responsible for photosynthesis in plants and algae) might have been secondarily lost in trypanosomatid parasites. Chloroplasts are present in some euglenids, which are closely related to trypanosomatids, and it has been argued that chloroplasts arose early in the diversification of the lineage Euglenozoa, to which trypanosomatids and euglenids belong (plastids-early hypothesis). This article reviews how euglenid ultrastructural systems are functionally integrated and phylogenetically correlated. I argue that chloroplast acquisition profoundly altered the structure of certain euglenids, and that the complete absence of these modifications in other euglenozoans is most consistent with their never having had a chloroplast. Ultrastructural evidence suggests that chloroplasts arose relatively recently within a specific subgroup of euglenids and that trypanosomatids are not secondarily non-photosynthetic (plastids-recent hypothesis).  相似文献

Studies of cranial differences between modern humans and Neandertals have identified several characteristics for which the two groups differ in their mean values, the proportional relationships with other traits, or both. However, the limited number of fairly complete Neandertals has hindered investigations into patterns of integration – covariance and correlation among traits – in this fossil group. Here, we use multiple approaches specifically designed to deal with fragmentary fossils to test if metric cranial traits in Neandertals fit modern human patterns of integration. Based on 37 traits collected from a sample of 2524 modern humans from Howells’ data set and 20 Neandertals, we show that overall patterns of cranial integration are significantly different between Neandertals and modern humans. However, at the same time, Neandertals are consistent with a modern human pattern of integration for more than three-quarters of the traits. Additionally, the differences between the predicted and actual values for the deviating traits are rather small, indicating that the differences in integration are subtle. Traits for which Neandertals deviate from modern human integration patterns tend to be found in regions where Neandertals and modern humans are known to also differ in their mean values. We conclude that the evolution of patterns of cranial integration is a cause for caution but also presents an opportunity for understanding cranial differences between modern humans and Neandertals.  相似文献

A large number of studies on the structure of N-glycosidically linked oligosaccharides from glycoproteins of different organs and/or different species have been carried out in the past using various combinations of techniques such as monosaccharide analysis, permethylation, peracteylation, exoglycosidase sequencing, normal and reversed phase HPLC, mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Although it is widely accepted that the processing of N-glycans in the ER and Golgi of mammalian cells follows the same principal metabolic rules, analyses have revealed that the glycosylation pattern of a particular protein may differ depending on the cell type in which it is expressed. N-glycans from brain glycoproteins have been shown to include a variety of hybrid- and complex-type structures with structural features that are not so commonly found on glycoproteins from other organs and which have, therefore, been classified as 'brain-specific'. Comparison of the N-glycans of glycoproteins from homogenates of rat, mouse and human brains confirm that, in general, glycoproteins from human brain show a similar profile of brain-specific N-glycans as glycoproteins from mouse and rat brain.  相似文献

We artificially selected on egg size in a butterfly to study the consequences for fecundity, reproductive effort and offspring fitness. Correlated responses in either pupal mass, larval or pupal development time were virtually absent. Offspring size was positively related to fitness, but only partly traded off against fecundity. Rather, total reproductive effort (measured as fresh mass), egg water content and the decline of egg size with female age increased in the large-egg selected lines compared to either small-egg or control lines. Accounting for these effects showed that reproductive investment (in dry mass) was in fact similar across lines. Such mechanisms may enable increased investment in (early) offspring without a reduction in their number, revealing a much more complex picture than a simple trade-off between offspring size and number. Substantial variation among replicates suggests that there are different underlying mechanisms for change, rather than any single, unitary pathway.  相似文献

We present a simple model to describe volume changes accompanying protein folding and binding events. The model enables one to resolve the changes in volume accompanying conformational transitions of proteins as well as association of proteins with other molecules in terms of the intrinsic, thermal and interaction (hydration) contributions. The thermal contribution to protein volume results from thermally activated mutual vibrational motions of contacting solute and solvent molecules. Our calculations suggest that near zero volume changes accompanying protein folding and binding events reflect compensation between significant changes in the intrinsic, thermal and interaction terms. We have quantitatively estimated these terms as a function of the protein's molecular weight and degree of its unfolding. Results described in this work lay foundation for more reliable and physically justified interpretations of volumetric data on protein folding and binding events. We also discuss potential ways of extending applications of our model to analyzing other macromolecular systems and events, including drug-DNA and protein-DNA interactions and helix-to-helix and helix-to-coil transitions of nucleic acids.  相似文献

The nurse-protégé hypothesis states that adult plants of one species provide micro-environmental conditions that favor the establishment of seedlings of a second species with no effect for the first species. Several studies suggest this effect should be prevalent in arid and semiarid zones as adult plants often provide shelter from low moisture and high temperature. Echinopsis chiloensis and Eulychnia acida are endemic columnar cacti that inhabit the arid and semiarid zones of Chile. In this study, we examined the pattern of recruitment of both cactus species at Reserva Nacional Las Chinchillas, located ~60 km east from the Pacific coast. We determined number, growth and survivorship of young cacti (<30 cm height) through biannual monitoring between 2009 and 2012 in microhabitats that strongly differ in their abiotic variables (minimum and maximum temperature and mean relative humidity, moisture content, and physical and chemical soil characteristics), under five different shrub species and in open spaces, and examined the association of these cacti with potential nurse plants. Most young cacti occurred under shrubs, the microhabitat having the lowest mean and maximum temperatures and the highest relative humidity. In particular, E. chiloensis and E. acida were found under the shrubs Flourensia thurifera and Bahia ambrosioides, respectively, in a higher frequency than expected by chance, suggesting that these shrub species behave as nurse plants through species-specific effects than are not accounted for by differences in soil nutrients.  相似文献

Abstract. Male crickets produce conspicuous acoustic signals to attract mates and deter potential rivals. These signals are created when a male cricket closes his wings rapidly and a file and scraper mechanism causes several areas of the wing to vibrate. The harp is an area of the wing that is part of the resonating structure. Because the harp acts as part of a mechanical resonator, changes in harp area or mass could influence the frequency of sound produced. Because females exhibit stabilizing selection on the frequency used in male songs, we hypothesized that there would be a negative allometric relationship between body size and harp area. In addition, we examined the degree of asymmetry in the harp, wing, and tibia. We examined this in four different species of cricket: Acheta domesticus, Gryllus bimaculatus, Gryllus rubens , and Teleogryllus oceanicus. For each species, we measured pronotum width as an index of body size, tibia length, and the area of the forewing and harp. There were significant differences among species in their morphological characteristics. We observed consistent directional asymmetry in the harp area but not in the total wing area. When wings did exhibit directional asymmetry, it was in the opposite direction of the directional asymmetry observed in the harp. Within species, larger males typically had larger harps and the relationship between harp area and body size exhibited negative allometry. Wing area exhibited an isometric relationship with body size. Our data provide a potential mechanism linking decreases in song frequency with body size in male crickets, and suggest that sensory constraints might influence the morphology of signaling structures in a similar fashion as genitalia.  相似文献

Understanding where and how fast an infectious disease will spread during an epidemic is critical for its control. However, the task is a challenging one as numerous factors may interact and drive the spread of a disease, specifically when vector-borne diseases are involved. We advocate the use of simultaneous autoregressive models to identify environmental features that significantly impact the velocity of disease spread. We illustrate this approach by exploring several environmental factors influencing the velocity of bluetongue (BT) spread in France during the 2007-2008 epizootic wave to determine which ones were the most important drivers. We used velocities of BT spread estimated in 4,495 municipalities and tested sixteen covariates defining five thematic groups of related variables: elevation, meteorological-related variables, landscape-related variables, host availability, and vaccination. We found that ecological factors associated with vector abundance and activity (elevation and meteorological-related variables), as well as with host availability, were important drivers of the spread of the disease. Specifically, the disease spread more slowly in areas with high elevation and when heavy rainfall associated with extreme temperature events occurred one or two months prior to the first clinical case. Moreover, the density of dairy cattle was correlated negatively with the velocity of BT spread. These findings add substantially to our understanding of BT spread in a temperate climate. Finally, the approach presented in this paper can be used with other infectious diseases, and provides a powerful tool to identify environmental features driving the velocity of disease spread.  相似文献

In place of a 'normal' external vagina, female spotted hyaenas bear a fully erectile, penis-sized clitoris through which they mate and give birth. Early hypotheses on the evolution of this organ have focused on its signal function, because the erect phallus is used by both sexes as part of submission or appeasement displays. However, a quite different hypothesis is suggested by recent data on the ecological function of female aggressiveness, and on the role of androgens in the development of aggressiveness and male genital development. In this view, the female phallus may have originated as an unselected side effect of selection for androgen-mediated bellicosity, a major advantage in the extraordinarily competitive hyaena social system.  相似文献

Over the last four decades, the majority of European farmland birds have shown marked population declines attributed to the intensification of agriculture. The Common Quail is a widespread farmland breeder across most of Europe. Its populations have shown marked decline, particularly pronounced at the end of the previous century. Ongoing agriculture intensification may be the factor responsible for the observed declines; however, links between species occurrence and farming intensification have not been addressed so far. We analyzed factors affecting the occurrence of the Quail in Poland using data from 722 1 × 1-km study plots and a set of 22 environmental variables, including proxies for agriculture intensification. Predictors were aggregated using PCAs and related to species presence/absence data using GAMs. The best-supported model of the species’ occurrence included eight variables and was clearly better (AIC weight = 0.54) than other models. Quails preferred open fields, showing high photosynthetic activity in March or June, with rather low precipitation and often at relatively high altitudes (up to 900 m a.s.l.). Importantly, quails were more frequent on plots located in regions with rather high inorganic fertilizer input, and showed no avoidance of areas with a high level of agriculture mechanization. We postulate that singing male quails are attracted to areas with medium or high intensity of agriculture but it may represent a maladaptive habitat choice enhanced by changing agriculture practices and peculiarities of the quail’s breeding strategy. Given the results, the quail cannot be classified as a good indicator of extensive traditional agriculture.  相似文献

It is well known that protein synthesis in ribosomes on mRNA requires two kinds of tRNAs: initiation and elongation. The former initiates the process (formylmethionine tRNA in prokaryotes and special methionine tRNA in eukaryotes). The latter participates in the synthesis proper, recognizing the sense codons. The synthesis is assisted by special proteins: initiation, elongation, and termination factors. The termination factors are necessary to recognize stop codons (UAG, UGA, and UAA) and to release the complete protein chain from the elongation tRNA preceding a stop codon. No termination tRNA capable of recognizing stop codons by its anticodon is known. The termination factors are thought to do this. We discovered in the large ribosomal RNA two regions that, like tRNAs, contain the anticodon hairpin, but with triplets complementary to stop codons. By analogy, we called them termination tRNAs (Ter-tRNA1 and Ter-tRNA2), though they transport no amino acids, and suggested them to directly recognize stop codons. The termination factors only condition such a recognition, making it specific and reliable (of course, they fulfill the hydrolysis of the ester bond between the polypeptide and tRNA). A strong argument in favor of our hypothesis came from vertebrate mitochondria. They acquired two new stop codons, AGA and AGG (in the standard code, they are two out of six arginine codons). We revealed that the corresponding anticodons appear in Ter-tRNA1.  相似文献

Social, environmental, and perceptual factors have been suggested to account for the evolution of visual signal diversity in lizards. Previous investigations have inferred that signal complexity may also be related to body size. In this study, we use three complementary comparative analyses to investigate whether body size has influenced macro-evolutionary trends in display modifier repertoire size for 110 species of iguanian lizards. We found evidence that signal complexity, as measured by repertoire size, is negatively associated with body size. However, this relationship was not strictly linear. Rather, body size seems to impose a threshold on signal evolution. Specifically, the evolution of large repertoire size appears to be less likely above a particular size threshold, which results in large-bodied lizards having a significantly lower probability of evolving elaborate displays. This relationship may reflect the influence of body size on resource use and the emergent social dynamics it promotes. Large lizards tend to be herbivorous and typically do not defend foraging patches. Consistent with this hypothesis is the previously reported finding of a similar size threshold dividing herbivorous from insectivorous lizards. Hamatocaulis vernicosus, a rare moss species, was monitored in 33 fens in the Czech Republic for five to six years. Population size, vitality and trends of population development were recorded. Water chemistry, water level fluctuation, vegetation type and cover, as well as mowing regime were assessed and the effect of these potential predictors on the species populations was examined. Populations of H. vernicosus were affected mainly by the density of vascular plants, the species thrived best in habitats with sparse herb and abundant ??brown moss?? cover. Other important factors included water table fluctuation and water concentration of iron. Populations were more vital and prospered better in sites with a stable water table and more iron-rich conditions. Dependence of population parameters on other measured characteristics of water chemistry was not detected.  相似文献

The femoral lymph sac volumes and lymph mobilization capacity were compared in three anuran species that span a range of environments, dehydration tolerance, ability to maintain blood volume with dehydration, and degrees of development of skeletal muscles putatively involved in moving lymph vertically to the posterior lymph hearts. The femoral lymph sac volume determined by Evans blue injection and dilution in the femoral lymph sac varied interspecifically. The semiaquatic species, Lithobates catesbeianus, had the greatest apparent lymph volume expressed either as 18.7 mL kg body mass?1 or 94 mL kg thigh mass?1, compared with both the terrestrial and aquatic species, Rhinella marina (7.3 mL kg body mass?1 and 57 mL kg thigh mass?1) and Xenopus laevis (6.5 mL kg body mass?1 and 40 mL kg thigh mass?1, respectively. Injections of Evans blue into the subvertebral lymph sac, which communicates with both pairs of lymph hearts, yielded the highest rates of lymph return to the circulation in all three species. The most terrestrial species had a greater rate of lymphatic return from the subvertebral lymph sac, compared with the other two species. The rate of lymph flux from the femoral sac varied interspecifically and was correlated with the number and development of skeletal muscles involved in lymph movement. The results indicated that the three species differ in both the volume of lymph present and the capacity to return lymph. Lymph flux was correlated with habitat and the ability to maintain blood volume when challenged by dehydration or hemorrhage, whereas femoral lymph volume was not correlated with these factors.  相似文献
