"Take some action,take some risk," conference on rural recruiting told

Physicians attending a recent conference on the retention of physicians in rural areas proposed more than 40 recommendations for dealing with recruitment and retention issues. The conference was organized by Ontario''s residents, who have been feeling the impact of attempts to encourage physicians to move to rural and underserviced areas.

Cognitive rehabilitation advanced by multifaceted research,conference told

More than 400 researchers, physicians and therapists recently gathered in Toronto for an international conference on cognitive rehabilitation. Speakers said this field of study is still in its infancy, although research is progressing in varied areas such as plasticity of the brain, ways to improve the brain''s ability to recover from trauma, stroke or disease, motivation strategies and external memory aids. A Toronto psychologist described positive clinical experiences achieved through individual counselling, alleviation of the family''s anxiety and the teaching of behaviour-management techniques.

Rural physicians and other professionals attending a recent conference in St. John''s reached consensus on a number of issues surrounding the role of nurse practitioners. The issue is important for rural doctors, since some people think NPs can help solve the physician shortage in rural areas.     

Vancouver conference hailed as latest step in "revolution for children".

Physicians who organized a major conference on children''s health in Vancouver this summer say it provided further evidence of the growing strength of a "revolution for children." The conference, which attracted 4000 delegates, followed up on earlier meetings held to improve the health care available to children around the world.

Education and Eminence in British Medicine

The educational background of eminent members of the British medical profession was examined by recourse to Who''s Who. Substantial differences in background were found among the various medical specialties. Members of specialties enjoying high prestige within the profession—physicians, surgeons—were more likely than other members of the sample to have been to an English school as opposed to one in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, and to a headmasters'' conference school as opposed to a grammar school. Educational background was also found to relate to the aspect of the patient''s body on which specialists normally worked. Specialists coming from English headmasters'' conference schools were more likely than others to work on living bodies rather than dead bodies or parts of bodies, on the head rather than on the lower trunk, on male bodies rather than female bodies, and on the body''s surface rather than its inside.     

Repair or regenerate—how can we tip the balance?

The fourth EMBO conference on ‘The Molecular and Cellular Basis of Regeneration and Repair’, held in September 2012, brought together researchers from both the regeneration and wound‐healing fields. The meeting spanned a wide range of research topics from basic science to clinical application, and a veritable melting pot of model organisms and approaches resulted in an excellent fourth conference in this series.     

Two Decades of Molecular Ecology: where are we and where are we heading?

The twentieth anniversary of the journal Molecular Ecology was celebrated with a symposium on the current state and the future directions of the field. The event, organized by Tim Vines and Loren Rieseberg, took place on the opening day of the First Joint Congress on Evolutionary Biology organized by the American Society of Naturalists (ASN), the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution (CSEE), the European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB), the Society for the Study of Evolution (SSE) and the Society of Systematic Biologists (SSB) in Ottawa (Canada) from 6–10 July 2012. The get together of these five societies created a truly international and exciting “Evolution conference” and the ideal framework for the Molecular Ecology symposium. Its thirteen talks were grouped into the five different subject areas of the journal: Speciation and Hybridization; Landscape Genetics, Phylogeography and Conservation; Ecological Genomics and Molecular Adaptation; Kinship, Parentage and Behaviour; Ecological Interactions. Each session was followed by a panel discussion on the future direction of the subfield. That more than 300 colleagues registered for this special symposium illustrates the broad interest in, and appreciation of, molecular ecology – both the field and the journal.

【目的】异麦芽糖酶IMA1在充分利用含有α-1,6-O-糖苷键的低聚糖中起着关键作用。【方法】在本研究中,对来自4株酿酒酵母菌株(包括3株嗜酸性菌株)来源的异麦芽糖酶IMA1进行克隆、表达、纯化和表征。【结果】研究发现,4种异麦芽糖酶IMA1表现出类似的pH和温度依赖性,但表现出不同的动力学参数和热稳定性。IMA1-A对α-MG(α-甲基葡糖苷)表现出最高的结合亲和力、转换数、催化效率和热稳定性。结构和序列分析表明,2个远离活性位点和底物结合位点的氨基酸的差异对异麦芽糖酶IMA1的动力学参数和热稳定性有重要影响。【结论】本研究结果对进一步研究异麦芽糖酶IMA1的结构-功能关系奠定了基础。

Anthropologists,Lawyers and Native Title Cases in Australia

An important issue arising in native title cases heard by the Federal Court of Australia is the role played by expert evidence, in particular, expert anthropological evidence. We argue that, because the claimants' evidence tends to deal with concepts and experiences unfamiliar to lawyers and judges involved in a case, anthropologists, drawing on their specialised skills and experience, can contribute to both the mediation and litigation of the case in a number of ways. We also call for improvements to the way anthropological evidence is put before the Court, and argue that a number of initiatives now being implemented do assist in making best use of expert anthropological evidence. One such initiative is the compulsory conference of experts, which has already been used in five matters around Australia. This conference, from which lawyers are usually excluded, is convened by a Court Registrar. It can assist in identifying and clarifying areas of dispute amongst experts, in focusing the parties on key aspects of the case at an early stage, and in improving the strengths of, and general manner of running, each party's case.     

Physicians must cast off grief over change if they're to move forward,anthropologist advises

It''s time for physicians to stop grieving over the massive changes occurring in health care and instead create a new vision that will lead them forward into the future, a cultural anthropologist told the CMA''s 8th annual Leadership Conference in March. About 175 physicians attended the 2-day conference on regaining the perspective on values in times of change.     

From beads on a string to the pearls of regulation: the structure and dynamics of chromatin

The assembly of eukaryotic chromatin, and the bearing of its structural organization on the regulation of gene expression, were the central topics of a recent conference organized jointly by the Biochemical Society and Wellcome Trust. A range of talks and poster presentations covered topical aspects of this research field and illuminated recent advances in our understanding of the structure and function of chromatin. The two-day meeting had stimulating presentations complemented with lively discourse and interactions of participants. In the present paper, we summarize the topics presented at the meeting, in particular highlighting subjects that are reviewed in more detail within this issue of Biochemical Society Transactions. The reports bring to life the truly fascinating molecular and structural biology of chromatin.

Problems of the Computerization of Learning

On 6-9 May 1985, an international conference on "Children in the information age," organized by the State Committee on Science and Technical Progress of the People's Republic of Bulgaria, was held in Varna, Bulgaria. Among the participants were [representatives of] the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (Austria), UNESCO, the International Fund of Ludmila Zhivkova (People's Republic of Bulgaria), and the World Health Organization. The purpose of the conference was to exchange experience on current problems in the computerization of learning, computer literacy, and information sciences in schools. About two hundred scientists from 45 different countries took part in the conference. The results of studies of methodological, psychological, pedagogical, physiological, and technical aspects of the problem of computerization of learning were discussed at plenary and workshop sessions. In addition, a special exhibit acquainted people with modern computer teaching devices, microprocessor teaching technology, dialogue teaching systems, logical and algorithmic games, programs, etc.

Ten simple rules for switching from face-to-face to remote conference: An opportunity to estimate the reduction in GHG emissions

In 2020, the world faced the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic that drastically altered people’s lives. Since then, many countries have been forced to suspend public gatherings, leading to many conference cancellations, postponements, or reorganizations. Switching from a face-to-face to a remote conference became inevitable and the ultimate solution to sustain scientific exchanges at the national and the international levels. The same year, as a committee, we were in charge of organizing the major French annual conference that covers all computational biology areas: The “Journées Ouvertes en Biologie, Informatique et Mathématiques” (JOBIM). Despite the health crisis, we succeeded in changing the conference format from face to face to remote in a very short amount of time. Here, we propose 10 simple rules based on this experience to modify a conference format in an optimized and cost-effective way. In addition to the suggested rules, we decided to emphasize an unexpected benefit of this situation: a significant reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to travel for scientific conference attendance. We believe that even once the SARS-CoV-2 crisis is over, we collectively will have an opportunity to think about the way we approach such scientific events over the longer term.     

First Aegean International Conference on Molecular Recognition

This meeting report describes some of the highlights of the First Biennial Aegean International Conference on Molecular Recognition that took place in Hersonissos, Crete, Greece, between 6 and 11 June 2010. The conference comprised four sessions devoted to: dynamic and combinatorial molecular recognition; B-cell epitope prediction, synthesis and vaccines; nanotechnology approaches to molecular recognition; and host-pathogen interactions. A total of 35 oral communications and 15 posters were presented. The second Aegean International Conference on Molecular Recognition is scheduled to take place in the spring of 2012.
