Homo naledi is near the extreme of small brain size within Homo but is easily recognized as Homo in other aspects of endocast morphology. This study adds new evidence of the endocast morphology of H. naledi by describing the Lesedi Hominin 1 (LES1) endocranium from the Lesedi Chamber and compares it to the previously known H. naledi individual Dinaledi Hominin 3 (DH3) as well as other hominin taxa. 相似文献

Ecotherms adjust their physiology to environmental temperatures. Long‐term exposures to heat or cold typically induce acclimation responses that generate directional, but reversible shifts in thermal tolerance and performance. However, less is known about how short exposure in different life stages will affect the adult phenotype. In the present study, we compared the effects of long‐term temperature exposure to 15, 19 and 31 °C with that of brief (16 h) exposure periods at the same temperatures in Drosophila melanogaster eggs, larvae, pupae, or adults, respectively. The acclimation responses are evaluated using activity measurements at 11, 15, 19, 27, 31 and 33 °C and by measuring upper and lower thermal limits (CTmax and CTmin) in 5‐day‐old adult males. As expected, long‐term cold exposure reduces relative CTmin, whereas long‐term heat exposure increases relative CTmax. By contrast, we find little effect on thermal limits when using short‐term exposures at different life stages. Long‐term exposures to 31 and 15 °C both suppressed activity relative to the 19 °C control, suggesting that development at high and low temperatures may lead to reduced activity later in life. Short‐term cold exposure early in development reduces activity in the adult stage, whereas the effects of short‐term heat exposure on behaviour are dependent on life stage and test temperature. Together, our results highlight how the thermal sensitivity of the trait measured determines the ability to detect acclimation responses. 相似文献

The embryonic development of the bullseye puffer, Sphoeroides annulatus, was characterized on the basis of the theory of saltatory ontogeny. This theory predicts a correlative relationship between the ontogeny-type in an altricial-precocial spectrum and the habitat that a species occupies within an unstable-stable environmental spectrum. Because S. annulatus inhabits a variety of unstable environments along a wide latitudinal range, the hypothesis that this species presents one of the most altricial embryonic developments among tetraodontids was tested. Based on major developmental events that marked the ontogenetic thresholds nine embryonic steps were identified. Developmental features such as small adhesives eggs, lack of vitelline circulation, small free embryos swimming up at hatching guided by positive phototaxis, and small first-feeding larvae actively swam in the water column, suggest that S. annulatus belongs to the reproductive guild of the nonguarders-lithopelagophils. Moreover, a comparative analysis of the developmental sequences, egg size, and first-feeding larvae size between tetraodontids confirms the hypothesis of this study and supports the evolutionary principle of the altricial-precocial spectrum postulated in the theory of saltatory ontogeny. 相似文献

The pattern of growth of body size variables and apical pulse rate have been suggested to be significant to cardiovascular status in adulthood. In order to investigate influences on the growth pattern of somatic variables in juveniles in contrasting environments, the relationships of body size variables, apical pulse, and age, and the patterns of family aggregations and of heritability of these were examined among juveniles in a modernizing society. Weight, height, triceps and subscapular skinfolds, and apical pulse were measured and weight/height2 was calculated for 431 urban and rural dwelling juvenile Maya females aged 9.5 to 20.4 years, and a sample of their mothers (n=96) living in the state of Yucatán, México. In addition, comparisons were made of the somatic variables for urban and rural sibling pairs (n=89) and motherdaughter pairings (n=149). Weight, height, and skinfolds were consistently lower in rural juveniles, and urban-rural variation was noted in the pattern of growth. Urban-rural variation was evident in the patterns of family aggregation and heritability of body size variables. Family tendency was generally elevated in the urban sample, but with some major deviations. Urban-rural variations, correlations among the variables, and the patterns of family aggregation support the conclusion that different influences are operating in this population regarding development of height, of weight, and of subcutaneous fat deposition. 相似文献

Changes in pelvic shape in human ontogeny and hominid phylogeny suggest that the heterochronic processes involved differ greatly from the neotenic process traditionally described in the evolution of the skull. The morphology of 150 juvenile and adult pelves of African apes, 60 juvenile and adult pelves of modern humans, two adult pelves and a juvenile hip bone of australopithecines (Sts 14, AL 288, MLD 7) was studied. Multivariate results, ontogenetic allometries, and growth curves confirm that the pelvic growth pattern in humans differs markedly from those of the African apes. The results permit the following conclusions. First, the appearance of a new feature (acetabulo-cristal buttress and cristal tubercle) at the time of human birth allows the addition of traits, such as the attainment of a proportionally narrower pelvis, with more sagittally positioned iliac blades. Pelvic proportions and orientation change progressively in early childhood as bipedalism is practiced. Other changes in pelvic proportions occur later with the adolescent growth spurt. Second, comparison of juvenile and adult australopithecines to modern humans indicates that 1) some pelvic traits of adult Australopithecus resemble those of neonate Homo; 2) the pelvic growth of Australopithecus was probably closer to that of apes, than to that of humans; and 3) prolonged growth in length of hindlimb and pelvis after sexual maturity seems to be a unique feature of Homo. The position of the acetabulo-cristal buttress and of the cristal tubercle on the ilium are similar in adult Australopithecus and neonate Homo suggesting that this feature may have been displaced later during hominid evolution. Progressive displacement of the acetabulo-cristal buttress on the ilium occurs both during hominid evolution (from Australopithecus to Homo sapiens) and human growth (from neonate to adult). This suggests peramorphic evolution of the pelvic morphology of hominids combining three processes of recapitulation (pre-displacement, acceleration and time hypermorphosis). The results lend credence to the hypothesis that no single heterochronic process accounts for all human evolutionary change; rather this reflects a combination of relative changes in growth rhythm and duration, including other perturbations, such as the appearance of new morphological features. Body mass is a critical variable in many hominin evolutionary studies, with implications for reconstructing relative brain size, diet, locomotion, subsistence strategy, and social organization. We review methods that have been proposed for estimating body mass from true and trace fossils, consider their applicability in different contexts, and the appropriateness of different modern reference samples. Recently developed techniques based on a wider range of modern populations hold promise for providing more accurate estimates in earlier hominins, although uncertainties remain, particularly in non-Homo taxa. When these methods are applied to almost 300 Late Miocene through Late Pleistocene specimens, the resulting body mass estimates fall within a 25–60 kg range for early non-Homo taxa, increase in early Homo to about 50–90 kg, then remain constant until the Terminal Pleistocene, when they decline. 相似文献

Setal variability and the other morphological characters of juvenile stages and adult of Hydrozetes lemnae (Coggi, 1897) and H. thienemanni Strenzke, 1943 were investigated. In the juveniles of both species the length and shape of some setae vary, especially in
the gastronotic region, more so in H. lemnae, which is parthenogenetic and reproduces by thelytoky, than in H. thienemanni, which is dioecious. The former species usually has more thick setae in the anterior and medial regions of the gastronotum,
especially in the larva, compared to the latter. In the juveniles of H. lemnae the prodorsal setae le and in are longer, and in the nymphs the gastronotal setae of the l-series are usually longer than in H. thienemanni. These species differ distinctly by the number of long setae in the posterior part of the nymphs; in H. lemnae three pairs of long setae occur, while in H. thienemanni only two pairs; the respective juvenile stages of H. lemnae are also smaller than those of H. thienemanni. In the adults the number of c-series setae varies, as seta c
1 is lost, and in some individuals also seta c
3, and only seta c
2 remains. 相似文献

Ongoing climate change is expected to shift tree species distribution and therefore affect forest biodiversity and ecosystem services. To assess and project tree distributional shifts, researchers may compare the distribution of juvenile and adult trees under the assumption that differences between tree life stages reflect distributional shifts triggered by climate change. However, the distribution of tree life stages could differ within the lifespan of trees, therefore, we hypothesize that currently observed distributional differences could represent shifts over ontogeny as opposed to climatically driven changes. Here, we test this hypothesis with data from 1435 plots resurveyed after more than three decades across the Western Carpathians. We compared seedling, sapling and adult distribution of 12 tree species along elevation, temperature and precipitation gradients. We analyzed (i) temporal shifts between the surveys and (ii) distributional differences between tree life stages within both surveys. Despite climate warming, tree species distribution of any life stage did not shift directionally upward along elevation between the surveys. Temporal elevational shifts were species specific and an order of magnitude lower than differences among tree life stages within the surveys. Our results show that the observed range shifts among tree life stages are more consistent with ontogenetic differences in the species' environmental requirements than with responses to recent climate change. The distribution of seedlings substantially differed from saplings and adults, while the distribution of saplings did not differ from adults, indicating a critical transition between seedling and sapling tree life stages. Future research has to take ontogenetic differences among life stages into account as we found that distributional differences recently observed worldwide may not reflect climate change but rather the different environmental requirements of tree life stages. 相似文献

The skeleton of the Homo erectus boy from West Lake Turkana, Kenya (KNM-WT 15000), is remarkably complete, and this individual has thus provided a case study for several researchers examining Homo erectus growth. Using data from a longitudinal study of Montreal French-Canadian children, it is shown that while dental and skeletal ages match reasonably well at the level of a sample of children, individuals can display differences between skeletal and dental ages of 2 years or more. Furthermore, the relationship between these two markers may change over time in individual children. It is also possible to find children with patterns of dental maturation similar to KNM-WT 15000's pattern in the Montreal sample. Therefore, neither the discrepancy between skeletal age and dental age alone nor the pattern of dental maturation as assessed by dental stages precludes a human-like pattern of growth, including an adolescent growth spurt, for this individual. Some indicators (e.g., estimated body size for predicted age, and enamel formation) do suggest possible growth-patterning differences from modern humans, and therefore earlier maturation is a reasonable hypothesis, but caution is warranted, given the large degree of modern human variation in developmental markers and the inherent uncertainty in precise estimation of KNM-WT 15000's maturational parameters. 相似文献

The terminal investment hypothesis (Williams [1966] Adaptation and Natural Selection; Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press) holds that reproductive effort should increase over time in iteroparous species in which reproductive value declines with age. Attempts to model this hypothesis and test it in various species have produced mixed results. Clutton-Brock ([ 1984] Am. Nat. 123:212-229) argued that simply testing for changes in propagule size with age fails to recognize that the costs of producing offspring of a given size may increase over the lifespan, hence absence of a positive correlation does not defeat the hypothesis. However, this interpretation is weakened by evidence of sequential increases in propagule size independent of age, as such changes reveal a capacity to increase absolute investment over time. Humans and chimpanzees meet the preconditions of the terminal investment hypothesis. Surveying the obstetrics literature, we show that the majority of published studies indicate that parity has a positive effect on birth weight, but age has no effect. Analyzing 436 captive chimpanzee births, we document a positive influence of parity and a negative influence of age. We therefore conclude that, though it is yet to be replaced by a more compelling alternative, the terminal investment hypothesis is not supported in these two species, as absence of a positive effect of age on birth weight cannot be interpreted in a manner congruent with the hypothesis. 相似文献

Levantine scraper, Capoeta damascina is a candidate species for future stock assessments, conservation studies, and hatchery efforts. Herein, we documented embryonic and early larval development, from egg activation to the exogenous feeding period, using morphological and histological landmarks. Embryos were obtained by in vitro fertilization from hormonally induced wild-caught broodstock, and subsequent development was monitored at temperatures coinciding with native conditions. Embryonic development from fertilization to hatch lasted ~105–110 hr. Larvae emerged with unpigmented eyes and body morphology, as well as an undifferentiated digestive tract. The mouth was closed at hatch by the oropharyngeal membrane and opened by the early endogenous feeding period. Trabeculae cartilage, quadrate bone, and Meckel's cartilage of the endoskeleton were present during the endogenous feeding period. During this period, the larvae underwent considerable changes in craniofacial morphology, locomotion, and organogenesis of the digestive tract. The cartilaginous floor of the neurocranium developed and the first four ceratobranchials appeared simultaneously at the end of endogenous feeding period. The digestive tract was differentiated into buccopharynx, esophagus, and small intestine during the endogenous feeding period. The intestinal valve and numerous longitudinal folds at the posterior region of the intestine formed together by the endo–exogenous feeding period. Major developmental events in retinogenesis occurred during the endogenous feeding period. When larvae entered exogenous feeding the mouth was fully-functional. Additionally, liver size and eye diameter increased. Our analysis of embryonic and early larval development in Levantine scraper aligned with other freshwater fishes. 相似文献

The feeding rate of perch Perca fluviatilis showed high individual variation at low and moderate turbidities, when one individual had consumed more Daphnia pulex than any other fish, whereas no such variation in feeding efficiency was observed with roach Rutilus rutilus. There was a significant decrease in total consumption of D. pulex by P. fluviatilis with increasing turbidity, but no correlation was observed in the case of R. rutilus. The results suggest that the difference in the ontogeny of P. fluviatilis and R. rutilus may be detectable as behaviour‐related species‐specific trait differences in the early planktivorous feeding stage of the two common species. 相似文献

The developmental stages of the sea louse Lepeophtheirus elegans (Copepoda: Caligidae) are described from material collected from marine ranched Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii . In L. elegans , setal number on the proximal segment of the antennule increases from 3 in the copepodid to 27 in the adult. Using the number of setae as a stage marker supports the inference that the post-naupliar phase of the life cycle comprises six stages: copepodid, chalimus I, chalimus II, pre-adult I, pre-adult II, and the adult. We observed variation in body length in both of the chalimus stages which we consider represents an early expression of sexual size dimorphism. We interpret the larger specimens of chalimus I as putative females, and the smaller as putative males; similarly with chalimus II, larger specimens are putative females and the smaller are males. Two patterns of life cycle are currently recognized within the Caligidae but the evidence presented here reconciles the two. We conclude that the typical caligid life cycle comprises only eight stages: two naupliar, one copepodid, and four chalimus stages preceding the adult in Caligus , but with the four chalimus stages represented by two chalimus and two pre-adult stages in Lepeophtheirus . This is a profound change with significant implications for the aquaculture industry, given that lice monitoring protocols include counts of chalimus stages and use temperature to predict when they will moult into the more pathogenic, mobile pre-adults. Lice management strategies must be tailored to the precise life cycle of the parasite. 相似文献

Previous studies of the Middle Stone Age human remains from Klasies River have concluded that they exhibited more sexual dimorphism than extant populations, but these claims have not been assessed statistically. We evaluate these claims by comparing size variation in the best‐represented elements at the site, namely the mandibular corpora and M2s, to that in samples from three recent human populations using resampling methods. We also examine size variation in these same elements from seven additional middle and late Pleistocene sites: Skhūl, Dolní Věstonice, Sima de los Huesos, Arago, Krapina, Shanidar, and Vindija. Our results demonstrate that size variation in the Klasies assemblage was greater than in recent humans, consistent with arguments that the Klasies people were more dimorphic than living humans. Variation in the Skhūl, Dolní Věstonice, and Sima de los Huesos mandibular samples is also higher than in the recent human samples, indicating that the Klasies sample was not unusual among middle and late Pleistocene hominins. In contrast, the Neandertal samples (Krapina, Shanidar, and Vindija) do not evince relatively high mandibular and molar variation, which may indicate that the level of dimorphism in Neandertals was similar to that observed in extant humans. These results suggest that the reduced levels of dimorphism in Neandertals and living humans may have developed independently, though larger fossil samples are needed to test this hypothesis. The vertebrate head has undergone enormous modification from the features borne by early ancestors. The growth of skull bones has been well studied in many species, yet little is known about corresponding soft tissue development. Among mammals, some of the most unusual examples of cranial evolution exist in the toothed whales (odontocetes). Specialized fat bodies in toothed whale heads play important roles in sound transmission and reception. These fat bodies contain unique endogenous lipids, with favourable acoustic properties, arranged in highly organized, three-dimensional patterns. We link variation in developmental rates of acoustic fats with life-history strategy, using bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoises. Porpoise acoustic fats attain adult configurations earlier (less than 1 year) and at a faster pace than dolphins. The accelerated lipid accumulation in porpoises reflects the earlier need for fully functional echolocation systems. Dolphins enjoy 3-6 years of maternal care; porpoises must achieve total independence by approximately nine months. Further, a stereotypic 'blueprint' for the spatial distribution of lipids is established prior to birth, demonstrating the highly conserved nature of the intricate biochemical arrangement in acoustic tissues. This system illustrates an unusual case of soft tissue development being constrained by life history, rather than the more commonly observed mechanistic or phyletic constraints. 相似文献

Despite our knowledge of the biophysical and behavioural changes during flight ontogeny in juvenile birds, little is known about the changes in the mechanical aspects of energy expenditure during early flight development, particularly in migratory species. Here, we investigate in a unique experimental setup how energy expended during flights changes over time beginning with early ontogeny. We calculate overall dynamic body acceleration (ODBA) as a proxy for energy expenditure in a group of hand raised greylag geese Anser anser trained to fly behind a microlight aircraft. We propose two potential hypotheses; energy expenditure either increases with increasing physiological suitability (the ‘physical development hypothesis’), or decreases as a result of behavioural improvements mitigating flight costs (the ‘behavioural development hypothesis’). There was a significant temporal increase of flight duration and ODBA over time, supporting the ‘physical development hypothesis’. This suggests that early on in flight ontogeny behavioural development leading to flight efficiency plays a weaker role in shaping ODBA changes than the increased physical ability to expend energy in flight. We discuss these findings and the implications of flight development on the life history of migratory species. 相似文献

Kennedy (1983) has proposed that the KNM-ER 1481A femur represents Homo erectus and establishes the presence of this species at ca. 2.0.myr BP. A reconsideration of her criteria for taxonomic attribution indicates that its morphology implies only that it is an archaic member of the genus Homo. Its geochronological position, in conjunction with its morphology, suggest that it is best referred to H. habilis. 相似文献
