Thermophilic unicellular cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus Näg. var. thermalis Geitl. strain Kovrov 1972/8 was cultivated in continuous flow reactor to simulate conditions occurring in nature in regions with low iron concentration. Two degrees of iron deprivation were established: (a) low iron (LI) conditions (9.0 µM Fe) when cells still maintained maximal growth rate but already exhibited changes in photosynthetic apparatus, and (b) iron deficient (ID) conditions (0.9 µM Fe) when cell growth rate decreased and extensive morphological and functional changes were observed. A decrease in the cellular content of phycobilin antenna was observed in both ID and LI cells and an increase of carotenoid concentration only in the ID culture. Morphologically, ID cells showed a decrease in the amount of phycobilins and in the number of thylakoid membranes. This suggests that S. elongatus responds to decrease in iron availability by substitution of the phycobilisomes by antennae containing chlorophyll (Chl) and carotenoids. Photochemical activity of photosystem (PS) 2, determined as Fv/Fm ratio was similar in high iron (HI) and LI cultures and approximately five times lower in ID culture. On the other hand, the activity of the whole electron transport chain showed the opposite tendency: the relative rates of the CO2-dependent oxygen evolution in HI : LI : ID cultures were approximately 1 : 2 : 4. Thus in nutrient stress the photosynthetic apparatus preserved its activity despite the decrease in the amount of both Chl-binding complexes and thylakoid membranes.  相似文献

A new species of Carex sect. Rhomboidales, C. jianfengensis, is described and illustrated from Hainan, China. The new species is similar to C. zunyiensis but differs in having involucral bracts sparsely hispid and with ca.1 cm long sheaths; inflorescence with 4 spikes, terminal spike ca. 2.5 cm long, lateral spikes 2–3.5 × 0.7–1 cm; staminate glumes narrowly ovate, ca. 5 mm; pistillate glumes triangular-lanceolate, 5–7 mm; perigynia 6–8 × 3 mm and pubescent on veins; nutlet 4–5 mm long, rhombic-ovoid, trigonous, base with shortly stipitate, apex abruptly contracted into a erect short beak, and not expanding into an annulate orifice.  相似文献

Currents through Ca channels were recorded in single canine atrial cells using whole-cell recording with patch pipettes. Two components of Ca channel current could be distinguished. One ("Ifast") was present only if cells were held at negative potentials, was most prominent for relatively small depolarizations, and inactivated within tens of milliseconds. The other ("Islow"), corresponding to the Ca current previously reported in single cardiac cells, persisted even at relatively positive holding potentials, required stronger depolarizations for maximal current, and inactivated much more slowly. Both currents were unaffected by tetrodotoxin and both were reduced by Co. Ifast had the same size and kinetics when Ca was exchanged for Ba, while Islow was bigger and slower with Ba as the charge carrier. In isotonic BaCl2, fluctuation analysis showed that Ifast had a smaller single channel current than Islow. Islow was much more sensitive to block by nitrendipine than was Ifast; also, Islow, but not Ifast, was increased by the dihydropyridine drug BAY K8644. Isoproterenol produced large increases in Islow but had no effect on Ifast.  相似文献

Poor growth of white lupin (Lupinus albus L.) on alkaline soils may result from its sensitivity to iron deficiency and poor nodulation. This study examined interactive effects of iron supply and high pH on the growth and nodulation of three genotypes differing in their sensitivity to iron deficiency. Three genotypes (P27486, Ultra and WTD180) were grown for 17 days in buffered solutions with Fe supply of 0.2, 2 and 20 μM. Solution pH was adjusted to 5.2, 6.5 or 7.5. Plant growth, nodulation and nutrient concentrations in plants were measured. Decreasing Fe supply decreased chlorophyll concentration in young leaves by up to 92%. Increasing pH decreased chlorophyll concentration by an average of 40% at pH 6.5 and by 47% at pH 7.5. The decrease of chlorophyll was less obvious in P27485 than in Ultra or WTD180. Shoot biomass was reduced by up to 18% by Fe deficiency, with such decrease being less for P27486. Increasing pH exacerbated the effect of Fe deficiency on shoot biomass only of Ultra. Decreasing Fe supply decreased nodule number by an average of 54%, and increasing pH decreased nodule number by 80%. P27486 formed the greatest number of nodules while WTD180 the least. P27486 had high Fe uptake and low internal requirement. Irrespective of genotype, leaf chlorosis positively correlated with cluster root formation. The results suggest that a combination of Fe deficiency and high pH impaired nodulation in L. albus, and that selection of genotypes for both tolerance of iron deficiency and good nodulation at high pH is important for a successful lupin crop on alkaline soils.  相似文献

Reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species are formed in the human body. Endogenous antioxidant defences are inadequate to scavenge them completely, so that ongoing oxidative damage to DNA, lipids, proteins and other molecules can be demonstrated and may contribute to the development of cancer, cardiovascular disease and possibly neurodegenerative disease. Hence diet-derived antioxidants may be particularly important in protecting against these diseases. Some antioxidants (e.g. ascorbate, certain flavonoids) can exert pro-oxidant actions in vitro, often by interaction with transition metal ions. The physiological relevance of these effects is uncertain, as is the optimal intake of most diet-derived antioxidants. In principle, these questions could be addressed by examining the effects of dietary composition and/or antioxidant supplementation upon parameters of oxidative damage in vivo. The methods available for measuring steady-state damage (i.e. the balance between damage and repair or replacement of damaged molecules) and the actual rate of damage to DNA, proteins and lipids are reviewed, highlighting areas in which further methodological development is urgently required.  相似文献

Abstract. Populations of Carex curvula ssp. curvula, C. curvula ssp. rosae and their intermediate form were investigated in the Central Alps over a three-year period. The closely related taxa showed a different dominance behaviour in their respective communities. This may be caused by different growth strategies and a different reproduction biology. Therefore, the main aim of the study was to compare the demography of the three taxa. Shoot and leaf turnover, flower and seed production and population half-lives were determined. Differences in growth dynamics were less pronounced between the two species of Carex curvula than between these taxa and their intermediate form which showed the highest shoot turnover, highest number of fertile inflorescences and highest number of seeds per inflorescence. Carex curvula ssp. rosae showed a slightly higher shoot and leaf production but a lower reproduction capacity than Carex curvula ssp. curvula. Recruitment of populations of the three Carex-forms was only by vegetative shoots. Flowering had a striking effect on the shoot dynamics of the species grown in the grassland sites: up to about 70 % of all dead shoots could be identified as dead flowering shoots from the previous year. The different dominance behaviour of the three taxa could not be explained by their demographical features. Interspecific interactions and the occurrence of microniches might affect the growth and reproduction processes of the taxa.  相似文献

Carex yunyiana X. F. Jin & C. Z. Zheng, a new species of Carex L. (Cyperaceae) is described from Zhejiang, eastern China. The new species has solitary, terminal, androgynous spikes, pale green pistillate glumes, 3 stigmas, and belongs to Carex subgen. Carex sect. Rhizopodae . It is allied to C. densicaepitosa , which only grows in the Longsheng County of Guangxi Zhuangzu Autonomous Region. However, it differs in having perigynia compressed–trigonous, obovoid, and acutely constricted to a short beak, while the achenes are loosely enveloped, broadly obovoid, trigonous or quadrangular, excavated on lateral surfaces, and evidently stipitate at base. A key to the species of Carex sect. Rhizopodae and a map showing their distribution is also provided.  相似文献

Originally, evolutionary game theory typically predicted that optimal behaviour in a given situation is uniform or bimodal. However, the growing evidence that animals behave more variably while individuals may differ consistently in their behaviour, has led to the development of models that predict a distribution of strategies. Here we support the importance of such models in a study on a coral reef fish host–parasite system. Parasitic blennies (Plagiotremus sp.) regularly attack other fishes to bite off scales and mucus. Individuals of some victim species react to being bitten with punishing the parasite through aggressive chasing. Our field observations and laboratory experiments show that individual blennies differ markedly in how they incorporate being punished into their foraging decisions. We discuss how these differences may affect the payoff structure and hence the net effect of punishment on punishers and on the appearance of a public good for look-alikes.  相似文献
