Biological odours that convey cues regarding individual identity can provide valuable information mediating many aspects of mammalian social relationships such us dominance hierarchies, group memberships, territorial and mating activities. The ability of the subterranean rodent, tuco‐tuco (Ctenomys talarum), to discriminate between soiled shavings, urine and faeces from different individuals was investigated using the habituation–discrimination paradigm. Discrimination by both males and females was tested using scents obtained from same‐ and opposite‐sex individuals. Each test subject was habituated for three consecutive days to odour samples from the same individual; on the fourth day a scent from a novel individual was provided. For all odour sources, animals spent significantly less time investigating the habituation scent over successive trials, indicating that animals perceived the stimulus as familiar. For all stimuli, test subjects spent more time investigating the novel odour, rather than the familiar one. Animals spent more time investigating soiled shavings than urine or faeces. Both males and females discriminated novel from familiar odours in shavings and urine regardless of the gender of the odour donors. In contrast, test animals discriminated between familiar and novel odours in feces only when the fecal donors were of different sex from subjects. Possible territorial and reproductive functions of individual scent discrimination are discussed.

The behavioural responses of adult male and female Rhyzopertha dominica (Coleoptera, Bostrichidae) to blends of host volatiles and male-produced aggregation pheromone were observed in a four-arm airflow olfactometer. The odour sources used were five pheromone-releasing males each on a single maize grain (lower maize-volatiles blend), five pheromone-releasing males on 500 g of maize (higher maize-volatiles blend) or the host volatiles emanating from 500g of maize (maize volatiles alone). Multiple-choice tests, in which volatiles from all three odour sources were presented in the exposure chamber at the same time, were used to study odour preferences of the males and females. Both sexes showed strongest attraction to the higher maize volatile blend but there were significant sex differences in response to the odour sources. Males spent significantly more time than females in the zone with only maize volatiles, and females spent significantly more time in the higher maize-volatiles zone. However, when odour sources were offered singly, females gave numerically greater responses than males to all sources although this difference was statistically significant for only the lower maize-volatiles blend. As males are more attracted than females to host odours alone it is suggested that they may be more highly adapted to seek out new hosts while females are more inclined to locate a food source by following the pheromone signals produced by males. However, both sexes responded most strongly to the odour source comprising aggregation pheromone with the higher proportion of maize volatiles.

Predation risk influences foraging decisions and time allocation of prey species, and may result in habitat shifts from potentially dangerous to safer areas. We examined a wild population of western grey kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus) to test the efficacy of predator faecal odour in influencing time allocated to different behaviours and inducing changes in habitat use. Kangaroos were exposed to fresh faeces of a historical predator, the dingo (Canis lupus dingo), a recently introduced predator, the red fox (Vulpes vulpes), a herbivore (horse, Equus caballus) and an unscented control simultaneously. Kangaroos did not increase vigilance in predator‐scented areas. However, they investigated odour sources by approaching and sniffing; more time was spent investigating fox odour than control odours. Kangaroos then exhibited a clear anti‐predator response to predator odours, modifying their space use by rapidly escaping, then avoiding fox and dingo odour sources. Our results demonstrate that wild western grey kangaroos show behavioural responses to predator faeces, investigating then avoiding these olfactory cues of potential predation risk, rather than increasing general vigilance. This study contributes to our understanding of the impact of introduced mammalian predators on marsupial prey and demonstrates that a native Australian marsupial can recognize and respond to the odour of potential predators, including one that has been recently introduced.

Small mammals have a number of means to detect and avoid predators, including visual, auditory and olfactory cues. Olfactory cues are particularly important for nocturnal or fossorial species where visual cues would not be as reliable. The Cape ground squirrel (Xerus inauris) is a semi‐fossorial, diurnal mammal from southern Africa. Cape ground squirrels encounter multiple species of predatory snake that pursue individuals underground where visual and social cues are limited. We assessed whether Cape ground squirrels use odours to discriminate between snakes by presenting a non‐venomous snake, a venomous snake and a control odour collected on polyethylene cubes to 11 adult female squirrels from 11 different social groups. Cape ground squirrels responded by inspecting the cube, displaying snake harassment–associated behaviours and decreasing time spent in close proximity to snake odours when compared with a control. They also displayed discrimination between two snake species by increasing the frequency of cube inspection and increasing harassment behaviours with venomous snake odours when compared with non‐venomous snake odours. We conclude that Cape ground squirrels respond with snake‐specific antipredator behaviours when presented olfactory cues alone. Olfactory discrimination may be maintained by the decreased utility of other methods of predator detection: sight and group detection, in below‐ground encounters.

Olfactory communication has a major role in solitary carnivores, particularly during the breeding season. Scent-marking behaviour in ferret (Mustela putorius f. furo) has been well studied, but not the significance of the deposited odours for the animal. We compared the interest in urogenital, anal and body odours of opposite-sex conspecifics between male and female ferrets and investigated both sexes’ discrimination ability (familiar vs. unfamiliar) for these three opposite-sex odours and the use of its ability by females during the breeding season. Males are more interested than females in the urogenital odour of the opposite sex. Male body odour probably did not interest females and males are somewhat interested in the female one. However, anal odour of the opposite sex is as interesting for males as for females and both sexes are able to discriminate familiar anal odour from an unfamiliar one. Moreover, females could use this ability when they must choose to have some sensory contact between olfactory familiar and unfamiliar males since they prefer to be in contact with the former. These results are coherent with behavioural differences observed between male and female solitary mustelids in the field and in captivity, and the consortship success of resident males compared to roaming males.

Animal foraging and reproductive behaviour is influenced by other simultaneous demands such as predator avoidance. The trade-offs between these demands may depend on sex or mating experience. This study demonstrates that the olfactory-mediated foraging and mate-seeking behaviours in the silver Y moths, Autographa gamma , are affected by auditory cues mimicking their bat predators. Both males and females changed their foraging behaviour under simulated predation risk. Fewer moths reached the odour source following sound stimulation and the time to find the odour source increased by up to 250%. However, there were no significant differences between male and female ability to reach the plant odour source or the duration of the flight towards the source when stimulated with ultrasound. Hence females are not more cautious than males when observed in the same behavioural context. Risk-taking in males was independent of whether they were flying toward a flower odour or sex pheromones having equal attractive value. This indicates that the trade-off between olfactory and acoustic cues is independent the type of odour. Mated females were not as strongly affected by sound as non-mated, indicating that flower odours have a higher adaptive value for mated females, suggesting that some processes following mating experience influence the trade-off between flower odours and simulated bat sounds.

1 In two successive years, the olfactory responses of Pterostichus melanarius Illiger (Coleoptera: Carabidae) to intact cabbage and white clover plants were studied, using a four‐arm olfactometer. 2 The first set of experiments tested the response to the odours of cabbage, white clover and the two plants grown together against potting compost; in the second and third sets of experiments, white clover and cabbage were tested, respectively. 3 The results indicate that female P. melanarius individuals are arrested by the combined odours of cabbage and white clover, spending significantly more time in the cabbage with white clover odour field than in either the cabbage, white clover or control odour fields. 4 Similar results were not found for males. 5 Cabbage plants alone did not elicit significant responses in either sex. 6 White clover alone did not elicit significant responses by females and the responses of males were not uniform in the two successive years.

Food quality is an important consideration in the foraging strategy of all animals, including herbivores. Those that can detect and assess the nutritional value of plants from afar, using senses such as smell and sight, can forage more efficiently than those that must assess food quality by taste alone. Selective foraging not only affects herbivore fitness but can influence the structure and composition of plant communities, yet little is known about how olfactory and visual cues help herbivores to find preferred plants. We tested the ability of a free‐ranging, generalist mammalian browser, the swamp wallaby Wallabia bicolor, to use olfactory and visual plant cues to find and/or browse differentially on Eucalyptus pilularis seedlings grown under different nutrient conditions. Low‐nutrient seedlings differed from high‐nutrient seedlings, having lighter coloured leaves, red stems and lower biomass and nitrogen content. In the absence of visual cues, wallabies used odour to differentiate vials containing cut seedlings. They visited and investigated patches with high‐nutrient seedling odour most, followed by patches with low‐nutrient seedling odour, and patches with no added odour least. However, when visual and olfactory cues of seedlings were present, wallabies reversed their foraging response and were more likely to browse low‐ than high‐nutrient seedlings. This browsing difference, in turn, disappeared when long‐range visual cues were reduced by pinning seedlings horizontal to the ground. We suggest that visual cues overrode the effects of olfactory cues on browsing patterns of intact seedlings. Our study shows that herbivores can respond to odours of higher nutrient plants but in ecologically realistic scenarios they use a variety of visual and olfactory cues, with a context‐dependent outcome that is not always selection of high nutrient food. Our results demonstrate the importance of testing the sensory abilities of herbivores in realistic multi‐sensory settings to understand their function in selective foraging.

Sex‐ and age‐related differences in cognitive abilities are frequently reported. However, the sex‐ and age‐related differences in dog olfaction due to biological system are still poorly understood. We examined c‐fos expression in dog olfactory bulbs by immunohistochemistry approaches. The c‐fos is mainly expressed in the olfactory glomerular layer (GL), mitral cell layer (ML) and granule cell layer (GRL). We found that a higher density of c‐fos‐positive cells could be detected in the ML of olfactory bulbs of adult female dogs compared with that in males and the c‐fos‐positive cells in females' olfactory bulbs are more distinct. Sex‐related differences in c‐fos expression also appeared in the GL of olfactory bulbs in juvenile dogs. We also discovered that the density of c‐fos‐positive cells in the GRL of adult dogs was much higher than that in the GRL of juvenile dogs. Our results indicate that cells in the olfactory bulbs of female dogs are more active than those in males and female dogs may have much stronger ability for long‐time memory of odours than male dogs. Furthermore, our results also suggest that adult dogs may have much stronger ability for long‐time memory of odours and can deal with more complicated odour information than juvenile dogs.

1. Since avoiding predation can compromise animal fitness, prey are expected to respond to different predator species with an intensity appropriate to the level of risk. In fresh waters, the threat of predation is typically assessed by chemical cues, in particular by odours released by either injured/disturbed conspecifics (conspecific alarm odour) or predators (predator odours). Here, we used the most widely distributed crayfish in the world, the invasive North American Procambarus clarkii, to investigate the relative effectiveness of odours emitted by fish predators compared with conspecific alarm odour. We also tested whether P. clarkii is able to discriminate between fish predators of which it has ‘experience’ (either recent, via introduction to the same water body, or old, by sharing a native range), as well as between fish predators that pose low or high risk. 2. The study was carried out on introduced populations of P. clarkii from two sites, characterised by different fish assemblages: the Malewa River (a tributary of Lake Naivasha, Kenya) and Lake Trasimeno (Italy). Laboratory experiments consisted of three sequential phases (‘water’, ‘food’ and ‘smell’ phases) and five treatments. Treatments differed in the odour presented during the smell phase, i.e. no odour (plain water) and odours from either injured conspecifics or three fish species per site. Crayfish from the Malewa River population were confronted with the odours of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and tilapia (Tilapia zillii) (all introduced to Lake Naivasha but absent from the Malewa River), and those from the Lake Trasimeno population with the odours of the introduced largemouth bass and carp and the native chub (Squalius cephalus). Largemouth bass is the only predator that imposes a high risk to crayfish, and it also shares its native range with P. clarkii. We analysed the time spent by crayfish feeding, in locomotion and in adopting a raised or lowered posture. A reduction in the time spent feeding and in locomotion, and an increase in the time spent in the lowered posture were considered to indicate alarm. 3. Crayfish from both populations responded with a more pronounced reduction in feeding to conspecific alarm odour rather than to predator odours. Crayfish from the Malewa River reacted with the same intensity to the odours of the three fish species tested, whereas, in Lake Trasimeno, the odour of largemouth bass was significantly more threatening than the odours of the other two species. 4. Procambarus clarkii seems to perceive a general fish odour that alerts it to possible predation risk without the need of either a direct recent experience or via sharing a common native range. However, where they coexist with fish, crayfish become able to distinguish among species, adapting the intensity of their response to the effective risk. Our results confirm the relatively high learning capacity of P. clarkii reported in previous studies and suggest the existence of mechanisms that make predator recognition particularly efficient in this extraordinarily successful invader.

The nature of the responses of the sheep blowfly Lucilia sericata Meigen (Diptera: Calliphoridae) to carrion odours and carbon dioxide were examined in a windtunnel in the laboratory and the attractiveness of carrion-bait was examined in the field. In the wind tunnel, gravid 9-day-old females increased both the number and duration of their flights, in response to carrion odours. In addition, linear velocity was reduced and the sinuosity of flight increased in the presence of these odours. With 3-day-old females, the response to carrrion odour depended on previous exposure to proteinaceous material. Protein deprived females showed kinetic responses to carrionodour which were similar to those of gravid females. No such changes were observed in protein-fed females. No responses to CO2 were observed. In the field, the importance of olfactory cues in bait location was demonstrated by the absence of L. sericata from sticky targets lacking an odour bait. Increased bait concentration did not affect the age, sex ratio or ratio of L. sericata to other Lucilia spp. caught, but did increase the numbers caught. Analysis of the reproductive status of females caught, indicated that a greater number of gravid females were caught than expected, while a lower number of females in the final stages of vitellogenesis were caught than expected. The results show that the responses of L. sericata to odours are complex, and are dependent on both exogenous and endogenous stimuli, the latter including the stage of ovarian development.

Sex recognition is based on colour signals in many species of lizards. However, olfactory stimuli are also clearly involved, and many species might rely more on chemoreception. We aimed to examine whether colour pattern or odours, or both, are used in sex recognition and which cues elicit courtship of females by males of the lizard Podarcis hispanica . We experimentally manipulated the coloration and odour of female P. hispanica , thereby creating groups with all combinations between coloration and odour of males and females. Using data from staged encounters, we compared the responses of resident males to manipulated and unmanipulated individuals (males and females). Responding males reacted significantly more aggressively to female intruders with male odours, independently of their coloration. Nevertheless, coloration seemed to be important in long-distance sex recognition since, in the first minutes, females painted as females received a lower number of aggressive responses. Both colour and odour were important in eliciting male courtship. However, females painted as females and with female odours were preferentially courted. Comparisons with unmanipulated male and female intruders agreed with these expectations. Therefore, at close range, odoriferous cues seem to be more important than colour patterns in sex recognition, but female coloration is also useful at long range to deter the aggressive response of males and to elicit courtship in conjunction with odours.

Sensory signals between individuals are important in short‐range mate finding. The purpose of our experiments was to verify the roles of different sensory cues in mate orientation and discrimination in Ophraella communa LeSage (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) adults. Sex discrimination and sensory deprivation tests (i.e., depriving the olfactory and/or visual senses of either or both sexes by coating with paint) were conducted in the laboratory. Male O. communa were able to locate and recognize conspecifics using olfactory cues prior to physical contact, but could not discriminate the opposite sex prior to physical contact. When the olfaction of male O. communa was deprived by painting antennae, males spent significantly longer times seeking mates in the arena. Copulation duration did not differ significantly among treatments. Thus, the mating process of O. communa adults was mediated by contact cues, but not by olfactory cues. The percentages of successful mating, searching duration, and copulation duration were all unaffected by visual deprivation, i.e., when the eyes of either or both sexes were covered by black paint. The function of visual cues was thus negligible in the mate‐finding process of O. communa adults. Overall, these results suggested that orientation and discrimination of the opposite sex by O. communa is dependent on the synergy between olfactory and tactile cues.

Behavioural responses to the host‐associated olfactory cues have not been completely understood for the cereal leaf beetle, Oulema melanopus, and its principal parasitoid, Tetrastichus julis. We, therefore, investigated the role of olfactory cues in the host‐finding behaviour of these species using olfactory bioassays. Behavioural responses of O. melanopus to odours emanating from intact host plants (wheat, oat, barley) vs. a clean‐air control were tested using multichoice and two‐choice bioassays. For T. julis, responses of naïve and experienced adult female wasps to odours associated with the faecal coat of O. melanopus larvae were measured under multichoice and two‐choice conditions. Our results indicate that olfactory cues are involved in the host‐finding behaviour of both O. melanopus and T. julis. Olfactory responses of O. melanopus were influenced by the sex of the beetle and the physiological stage of adults (reproductively active vs. in reproductive diapause). Females respond to olfactory cues in greater proportions than males, and reproductively active, overwintered adults show greater responsiveness than teneral adults in reproductive diapause. Behavioural responses to cues emanating from different crop species were different in multichoice bioassays but not in two‐choice bioassays. Further, we report for the first time that the olfactory cues associated with the faecal coat of O. melanopus evoke host‐finding behaviour of its parasitoid, T. julis. Naïve female wasps are more likely to use these cues to locate the potential host than experienced females. The results of this investigation provide insights into host finding by both the species and the nature of behavioural response brought about by olfactory stimuli, and the results can help to design strategies to improve parasitoid activity by enhancing the crop environment to generate cues for host finding and to manage O. melanopus populations.

When searching for resources in heterogeneous environments, animals must rely on their abilities to detect the resources via their sensory systems. However, variation in the strength of the sensory cue may be mediated by the physical size of the resource patch. Patch detection of insects are often predicted by the scaling of sensory cues to patch size, where visual cues has been proposed to scale proportional to the diameter of the patch. The scaling properties of olfactory cues are, however, virtually unknown. Here, we investigated scaling rules for olfactory information in a gradient of numbers of odour sources, relevant to odour‐mediated attraction under field conditions. We recorded moth antennal responses to sex pheromones downwind from pheromone patches and estimated the slope in the scaling relationship between the effective length of the odour plumes and the number of odour sources. These measurements showed that the effective plume length increased proportional to the square root of the number of odour sources. The scaling relationship, as estimated in the field experiment, was then evaluated against field data of the slope in the relationship between trap catch and release rate of chemical attractants for a wide range of insects. This meta‐analysis revealed an average slope largely consistent with the estimated scaling relationship between the effective plume length and the number of odour sources. This study is the first to estimate the scaling properties of olfactory cues empirically and has implications for understanding and predicting the spatial distributions of insects searching by means of olfactory cues in heterogeneous environments.

The role of pollen odour in resource location by the pollen beetle, Meligethes aeneus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), a pollen-feeding insect regarded as a pest of oilseed rape, Brassica napus L., (Brassicaceae) crops, was investigated in a linear track olfactometer. Both male and female beetles were attracted to the odour of whole oilseed rape flowers, indicating that these insects can locate their host plants using floral odours as cues. The attractive odour of flowers was found to emanate from all floral parts tested: the petals/sepals, the anthers, and from pollen itself. Therefore, at least part of the attractive odour of oilseed rape flowers emanates from pollen. Beetles were more attracted to floral samples containing anthers than those without anthers when these odours were directly compared in a choice-test, and this indicates that there were detectable differences between them. Anthers and pollen may therefore release distinctive odours that are quantitatively and/or qualitatively different from the odour of the rest of the flower. These experiments support the hypothesis that pollen-seeking insects use pollen odour cues to locate this food source.

Burrow nesting procellariiform seabirds use olfactory cues for both foraging and nest recognition. As chicks, burrow nesters develop in the dark, but are exposed to both prey‐related and individual‐specific scents through contact with their parents. This exposure suggests that chicks may have the opportunity to learn odours while still in the nest. In this study, we examined whether exposure to odourants during development might influence olfactory search behaviour expressed later in life. To test this idea, we exposed eggs of thin‐billed prions Pachyptila belcheri to a rosy‐scented novel odour (phenyl ethyl alcohol, PEA) or a control (water) just before hatching; chicks were then tested with these odours in a simple wind tunnel. Prior to fledging, subjects who had received pre‐exposure to PEA displayed head sweeps nearly twice as frequently as control birds did when presented with PEA. This study demonstrates that under natural rearing conditions, procellariiforms learn odour characteristics of their rearing environment in the nest.

The Large Pine Weevil, Hylobius abietis, is one of the most important pests in European coniferous forests. The ectoparasitoid Bracon hylobii is known to cause around 50% larval mortality. Chemical volatiles are among the most important stimuli involved in the host location. In the present study, a 4-arm olfactometer and a 2-choice wind-tunnel were used to test the behavioural responses of B. hylobii females to four odour sources from the host-plant/host-insect complex. For each odour, the behaviour of twenty virgin females was individually recorded in an olfactometer, whereas twenty virgin and twenty mated females were individually tested in a wind-tunnel. The following behavioural parameters were analysed: a) time spent walking; b) time spent stopped; c) total time spent in each arm; d) total speed; e) net speed; f) the rate of turning per unit distance walked; g) rate of turning per second. Comparison between odours shows clear differences in the behavioural parameters analysed. In particular, the bark disc/larva complex is the only odour source able to elicit behavioural responses of both naive and mated females. As strong responses were obtained only using experienced females, this suggests that previous searching activities increase the ability of B. hylobii to find its host.
