Porotic hyperostosis is a paleopathologic condition that has intrigued researchers for over a century and a half. It is now generally accepted that anemia, most probably an iron deficiency anemia, is the etiologic factor responsible for lesion production. Although there can be a number of factors involved in the development of iron deficiency anemia, a dietary explanation has often been invoked to explain the occurrence of porotic hyperostosis in past human skeletal populations. In fact, porotic hyperostosis has been referred to as a "nutritional" stress indicator. Traditionally those groups with a higher incidence of porotic hyperostosis have been considered to be less successful in adapting to their environment or more nutritionally disadvantaged than other groups. A new perspective is emerging that is challenging previous views of the role of iron in health and disease, thus having profound implications for the understanding of porotic hyperostosis. There is a new appreciation of the adaptability and flexibility of iron metabolism; as a result it has become apparent that diet plays a very minor role in the development of iron deficiency anemia. It is now understood that, rather than being detrimental, hypoferremia (deficiency of iron in the blood) is actually an adaptation to disease and microorganism invasion. When faced with chronic and/or heavy pathogen loads individuals become hypoferremic as part of their defense against these pathogens, thus increasing their susceptibility to iron deficiency anemia. Within the context of this new perspective porotic hyperostosis is seen not as a nutritional stress indicator, but as a indication that a population is attempting to adapt to the pathogen load in its environment.  相似文献

Talampicillin is a thiazolide carboxylic ester of ampicillin and is hydrolysed in the intestinal mucosa to release free ampicillin. The mean peak serum concentration of ampicillin occurred one hour after a dose of talampicillin and was about twice that attained by an equivalent dose of ampicillin. The presence of food in the stomach reduced and delayed the peak blood levels but did not affect the total amount of antibiotic absorbed or the urinary recovery. Talampicillin had less effect on the faecal flora in volunteers than ampicillin, and no overgrowth with Candida spp or Staphylococcus aureus was seen. Thirty-eight out of 47 urinary infections were eradicated by a seven-day course of talampicillin.  相似文献

A rosette-type assay of the physical interaction between lymphocytes and monocytes after treatment with neuraminidase-galactose oxidase (NGAO) is reported. Monocyte-lymphocyte (ML) rosette formation and subsequent lymphocyte proliferation occurred when either lymphocytes or homologous monocytes were treated with NGAO and cultured together. Maximal ML rosette formation took place at 37 degrees C 4 hr after culture in media containing 10% serum at lymphocyte to monocyte ratios of 10:1 to 20:1. The percentage of rosette formation correlated with the extent of thymidine incorporation when increasing concentrations of NGAO were used. When NGAO-treated monocytes were added to untreated T and non-T lymphocytes, they bound preferentially to T lymphocytes and induced proliferation only in the T subpopulation. These results indicate that the ML rosette assay measures a highly specific monocyte-lymphocyte physical interaction after a mitogenic stimulus which is an early event in lymphocyte activation since it reflects the degree of subsequent lymphocyte proliferation.  相似文献

The cation discriminations of salinomycin and its derivatives have been studied by measuring complexability with cations and transport rate of them across organic phase. Salinomycin exhibited a great preference for K+ over other monovalent and divalent cations in migrating cations into organic phase in two phase systems. The antibiotic mediated the transport of Na+ and Rb+ as effectively as that of K+ across CCl4 bulk phase, but not those of Cs+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+. From the above results, salinomycin is concluded to act as an alkali ion carrier. The OH-acylated salinomycins retained the activity of parent compound, but the COOH-esterified salinomycins lost the activity.  相似文献

An improved L mammaplasty technique was employed in 178 patients aged 13 to 55 years, with reductions of up to 1280 gm per breast, with small, well-positioned, and undistorted scars. I have obtained a satisfactory final shape of the breast with no major complications over a 3-year follow-up period. The markings are based on chest width and on the quantity of skin that will remain. The technique allows the surgeon to remove more skin, and it is indicated for minor, moderate, and large hypertrophies, as well as for ptotic and asymmetrical breasts. The resection comprises skin and mammary tissue from the inferior and middle portions of the breast, preserving the main lactiferous ducts. In case of hypertrophic breasts, the base is removed, preserving the branches of the lateral cutaneous nerves, which derive from the third, fourth, and fifth intercostal nerves.  相似文献

Two unrelated patients with a strikingly similar phenotype (low birth weight and poor thriving; mental retardation; dolichocephaly; beaked nose; deeply set eyes; prominent maxilla and receding small chin; long fingers with a peculiar clench) were partially trisomic for two different segments of 9q. The segment found to be trisomic in both patients is small and corresponds to the q31q32 region. This new syndrome is compared to observations of trisomy 9 reported in the literature.  相似文献
