A new slide holder for immune staining

The construction of a Perspex slide holder for use in immune staining is described. The apparatus allows large numbers of slides to be stained at once and makes the procedure less tedious than it would otherwise be.     

A new dipteran forensic indicator in buried bodies

The first breeding records of miltogrammine fleshflies in buried vertebrate carrion are presented. First instars of Eumacronychia persolla Reinhard (Nearctic) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) and Phylloteles pictipennis Loew (Palaearctic) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) are able to penetrate dry, loose soil and reach deeply buried animal remains, an ability which distinguishes is unique to necrophagous Calyptratae. Their broad geographical distribution, fast location and colonization of carrion, complete development on buried food resources and easy identification make these species useful forensic indicators in buried bodies in dry habitats.     

A new type of radical-pair-based model for magnetoreception

Certain migratory birds can sense the Earth's magnetic field. The nature of this process is not yet properly understood. Here we offer a simple explanation according to which birds literally see the local magnetic field through the impact of a physical rather than a chemical signature of the radical pair: a transient, long-lived electric dipole moment. Based on this premise, our picture can explain recent surprising experimental data indicating long lifetimes for the radical pair. Moreover, there is a clear evolutionary path toward this field-sensing mechanism: it is an enhancement of a weak effect that may be present in many species.     

A plate holder for non-destructive testing of mesophase crystallization assays

Here, we describe a goniometer holder to mount standard 96-well crystallization plates directly onto the goniometer head of an oscillation camera. This attachment was designed to check crystallization conditions straight from the crystallization plates under X-rays, and was proven to be useful for checking small crystals and solutions that destabilize monoolein-based lipidic cubic phase (LCP) crystallization experiments. A quick procedure for setting up LCP assays employing commercially available instruments is also reported.
