The behaviour of the paradise fish in the presence of either a living pike or catfish or various dummies or a catfish equipped with a pair of artificial big eyes was studied. Analyzing the first encounter two separate periods of the predator recognition process could be identified. The primary form of the antipredatory reaction was orientation (looking at the object while keeping a constant eye and body position) which was elicited by any fish-like bodies but not by bare eyes without a body. During orientation the presence of pike or catfish equipped with artificial eyes or a dummy with horizontal eyes elicited fin erecting display. This reaction was sporadic in the presence of a normal catfish which has very small eyes. The biological significance of this separate organization of exploration is discussed.  相似文献

The response of precocial birds to configurational stimuli has been a source of controversy for decades. In this experiment we measured cardiac response of domestic chicks to “hawk” and “goose” silhouettes. The chicks' heart rates varied more in response to the hawk model than to the goose model, suggesting that the hawk silhouette is a more fearful stimulus than that of the goose. Our data document the recognition of a configurational stimulus without prior, pertinent experience.  相似文献

We assessed the ability of southern house wrens (Troglodytes aedon musculus) to recognize and discriminate different birds of prey. We exposed nesting birds to stuffed specimens of two sympatric predator species, the chimango caracara (Milvago chimango, a nest predator) and the roadside hawk (Buteo magnirostris, a predator of adults and nests), and to a dummy of a non-sympatric predator, the double-toothed kite (Harpagus bidentatus, a predator of adults). Nesting wrens avoided going into their nest or took a longer time to resume their parental duties when exposed to the predators than when they were exposed to a control dummy (Chrysomus ruficapillus, a sympatric blackbird). Nest avoidance was higher when birds were exposed to the roadside hawk but no differences were detected when exposed to the chimango caracara or the double-toothed kite. The results indicate that southern house wrens are able to recognize a predator, responding in a graded manner. Our findings support the hypothesis that southern house wrens exhibit a threat-sensitive response during breeding. Also, individuals were able to recognize the unknown predator but failed to correctly assess the threat level represented by it. We propose that correct assessment of threat level by house wrens requires direct experience with the predator, which might mediate in the modulation of the response.  相似文献

Response properties of neurons in the cervical connectives of the hummingbird hawk moth, Macroglossum stellatarum L., were determined. All neurons described in this account respond directionally selectively to motion in large parts of the visual field of either eye. They respond maximally to bilateral stimulation, preferring either motion as induced on the eyes during translatory movements of the animal or when it turns around one of its body axes. Cells most sensitive to rotational motion either respond best to rotation of the patterns around the vertical axis of the animal or around its longitudinal body axis. Neurons most sensitive to translational pattern motion respond best to either simulated translations of the animal along its vertical or along an oblique axis. Most types of neurons respond tonically and do not habituate. The sensitivity to motion stimuli is not evenly distributed within the receptive field of any investigated neuron. Part of these neurons might play a role in visual position and course stabilization. Accepted: 13 August 1997  相似文献

Willow grouse (Lagopus l. lagopus) chicks appear to possess a ‘template’ of the hen's brooding call. Chicks newly hatched from machine-incubated eggs were therefore exposed to a number of electronically synthesized approximations to brooding calls. These sounds were either paired with a recording of a grouse hen's brooding call, or were played alone. Some of the synthesized calls (repetitive, low-frequency) attracted chicks, while others appeared to be aversive. None of the synthesized calls drew chicks away from the recorded hen call. These results suggest that grouse chicks will approach a wide range of attraction calls which have certain minimum features.  相似文献

Optomotor responses of freely flying hawk moths, Macroglossum stellatarum, were characterized while the animals were hovering in front of and feeding on a dummy flower. Compensatory translational and rotational movements of the hawk moth were elicited by vertical grating patterns moving horizontally, mimicking imposed rotational and translational displacements of the animal in the horizontal plane. Oscillatory translational and rotational pattern motion leads to compensatory responses that peak in the frequency range between 2 Hz and 4 Hz. The control systems mediating the translational and rotational components of the optomotor response do not seem to influence each other. The system mediating translational responses is more sensitive in the fronto-lateral part of the visual field than in the lateral part; the opposite is true for the rotational system. The sensitivity of the translational system does not change along the vertical, whereas the rotational system is much more sensitive to motion in the dorsal than in the ventral part of the visual field. These sensitivity gradients may reflect an adaptation to the specific requirements of position stabilization in front of flowers during feeding. Accepted: 13 August 1997  相似文献

Eyes play a vital role in human social interactions. In fact, some prior work indicates that simply the presence of eyes or eye-like stimuli increases people's prosocial behavior, arguably because the eyes serve as cues of being watched and thus elicit reputational concerns. The current study was designed to address two questions in this regard. First, we examined how salient the eyes are among the human features. Second, we asked whether individual differences in attentiveness to eyes (but not other human features such as ears or hands) are predictive of reputation-enhancing behavior. Using an eye-tracking paradigm, we found that participants looked longest to eyes compared to other human features. Critically, greater attentiveness to eyes correlated with greater generosity on a donation task, but only in a reputation-relevant context (i.e., when donations were public but not when they were anonymous). Attentiveness to other human features did not predict donation behavior. Eyes are thus an especially salient human feature, and attentiveness to eyes may signal individuals' concerns about their reputations.  相似文献

Laboratory-reared 37-day-old white leghorn chicks were placed individually in an arena with one of a range of eight three-dimensional stimuli. The chick's behaviour was recorded over a 3-min period. Each bird was exposed to a stimulus which varied in three ways, being either circular concentric (eye-like) or rectangular, single or paired and which appeared to either persistently look at (track) or look away from (avoid) the chick. All three manipulations produced significant effects on how close the bird approached. The most avoided combination was two, tracking, eyelike shapes. The results are discussed in the context of the problems involved in isolating the effective components of stares and the head forwards threat posture.  相似文献

Three families of probe-foraging birds, Scolopacidae (sandpipers and snipes), Apterygidae (kiwi), and Threskiornithidae (ibises, including spoonbills) have independently evolved long, narrow bills containing clusters of vibration-sensitive mechanoreceptors (Herbst corpuscles) within pits in the bill-tip. These ‘bill-tip organs’ allow birds to detect buried or submerged prey via substrate-borne vibrations and/or interstitial pressure gradients. Shorebirds, kiwi and ibises are only distantly related, with the phylogenetic divide between kiwi and the other two taxa being particularly deep. We compared the bill-tip structure and associated somatosensory regions in the brains of kiwi and shorebirds to understand the degree of convergence of these systems between the two taxa. For comparison, we also included data from other taxa including waterfowl (Anatidae) and parrots (Psittaculidae and Cacatuidae), non-apterygid ratites, and other probe-foraging and non probe-foraging birds including non-scolopacid shorebirds (Charadriidae, Haematopodidae, Recurvirostridae and Sternidae). We show that the bill-tip organ structure was broadly similar between the Apterygidae and Scolopacidae, however some inter-specific variation was found in the number, shape and orientation of sensory pits between the two groups. Kiwi, scolopacid shorebirds, waterfowl and parrots all shared hypertrophy or near-hypertrophy of the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus. Hypertrophy of the nucleus basorostralis, however, occurred only in waterfowl, kiwi, three of the scolopacid species examined and a species of oystercatcher (Charadriiformes: Haematopodidae). Hypertrophy of the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus in kiwi, Scolopacidae, and other tactile specialists appears to have co-evolved alongside bill-tip specializations, whereas hypertrophy of nucleus basorostralis may be influenced to a greater extent by other sensory inputs. We suggest that similarities between kiwi and scolopacid bill-tip organs and associated somatosensory brain regions are likely a result of similar ecological selective pressures, with inter-specific variations reflecting finer-scale niche differentiation.  相似文献

Records from kiwi ( Apteryx spp.) breeding centres were used to obtain laying dates of 403 North Island brown kiwi ( Apteryx australis mantelli ) eggs, 24 great spotted kiwi ( Apteryx haastii ) eggs and 25 little spotted kiwi ( Apteryx owenii ) eggs. North Island brown kiwi outdoors had an annual cycle of egg-laying with 88.5% of eggs laid from June to January. Eggs were laid in every month of the year, with fewest eggs in April (2.1 % of all eggs). The greatest number of eggs was laid in July (15.6% of all eggs), with a second peak of laying in October (13.5% of all eggs). Both the great spotted kiwi and little spotted kiwi had annual cycles of egg-laying, with the main egg-laying seasons being August-January (87.5% of eggs) for the former and July-December (96.0% of eggs) for the latter. The highest peaks of laying were in October and August, respectively. Kiwi eggs were considered to belong to the same clutch if they were laid no more than 40 days apart. Clutch size in the North Island brown and little spotted kiwi was most commonly one or two eggs. In the great spotted kiwi only clutches of one egg were found. The mean clutch size of North Island brown kiwi outdoors (1.51±0.05) did not differ from that of free-living North Island brown kiwi (1.33±0.09). Similarly, there was no difference in the mean clutch size of captive and free-living little spotted kiwi (1.39±0.14 and 1.10±0.07). The mean interval between eggs for kiwi outdoors did not differ between North Island brown kiwi and little spotted kiwi (27.4±0.5 and 30.7±1.8 days). The results indicate that all three species of kiwi maintain annual cycles of egg-laying in captivity, with the main egg-laying season being longer than in free-living birds.  相似文献

Using fixed stimulus dummies as territory intruders, we studied the spatial distributions of the aggressive responses made by nesting male pumpkinseed sunfish. Results replicated over three field seasons indicate that males defend two territory boundaries concurrently, depending on whether an intruder is approaching (“the defence perimeter’) or withdrawing (‘the attack perimeter’). This finding supports Zeeman's (1976) ‘cusp catastrophe model’ of nest defence. In addition, the defence perimeter remains constant over the breeding cycle while the attack perimeter varies. We discuss the ecological costs and benefits of this variation and present a motivational interpretation of the cusp catastrophe model. By varying the speed at which dummies intruded into nests, we determined that males react with a fixed latency to intruders at a fixed distance from the nest. Finally, the spatial distributions of male defence responses were partially determined by the location of the nest rim, but were unaffected by dummy size (contrary to Zeeman's model) or posture.  相似文献

Purpose

To assess prevalence, size and location of peripapillary intrachoroidal cavitations (PICCs) and their associations in a population-based sample. .

Methods

The population-based Beijing Eye Study 2011 included 3468 individuals with a mean age of 64.6±9.8 years (range:50-93 years). A detailed ophthalmic examination included enhanced depth imaging of the choroid by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography and fundus photography. PICCs were defined as triangular thickening of the choroid with the base at the optic disc border and a distance between Bruch´s membrane and sclera of ≥200μm. Parapapillary large choroidal vessels were excluded.

Results

Out of 94 subjects with high myopia (refractive error <-6.0 diopters or axial length >26.5mm in right eyes), OCT images were available for 89 (94.7%) participants. A PICC was detected in 15 out of these 89 highly myopic subjects (prevalence:16.9±4.0%) and in none of hyperopic, emmetropic or medium myopic subgroups each consisting of 100 randomly selected subjects. Mean PICC width was 4.2±2.3 hours (30°) of disc circumference and mean length was 1363±384μm. PICCs were located most frequently (40%) at the inferior disc border. On fundus photos, a typical yellow-orange lesion was found in 8 (53%) eyes with PICCs. In binary regression analysis, presence of PICCs was significantly associated with optic disc tilting (P=0.04) and presence of posterior staphylomata (P=0.046).

Conclusions

Prevalence of PICCs in the adult Chinese population was 16.9±4.0% in the highly myopic group, with no PICCs detected in non-highly myopic eyes. PICCs were located most frequently at the inferior optic disc border. Only half of the PICCs detected on OCT images showed a yellow-orange lesion on fundus photos. Presence of PICC was significantly associated only with an increased optic disc tilting and presence of posterior staphylomata, while it was not associated with axial length, refractive error or other ocular or systemic parameters.  相似文献

In order to gain insight into the in situ properties and localisation of kiwi pectin methylesterase inhibitor (PMEI), a toolbox of monoclonal antibodies (MA) towards PMEI was developed. Out of a panel of MA generated towards kiwi PMEI, three MA, i.e. MA-KI9A8, MA-KI15C12 and MA-KI15G7, were selected. Thorough characterisation proved that these MA bind specifically to kiwi PMEI and kiwi PMEI in complex with plant PME and recognise a linear epitope on PMEI. Extract screening of green kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa) and gold kiwi (Actinidia chinensis) confirmed the potential use of these MA as probes to screen for PMEI in other sources. Tissue printing revealed the overall presence of PMEI in pericarp and columella of ripe kiwi fruit. Further analysis on the cellular level showed PMEI label concentrated in the middle lamella and in the cell-wall region near the plasmalemma. Intercellular spaces, however, were either completely filled or lined with label. In conclusion, the developed toolbox of antibodies towards PMEI can be used as probes to localise PMEI on different levels, which can be of relevance for plant physiologists as well as food technologists.  相似文献

It is supposed that coloration may affect the recognition of predators by prey species; nevertheless, the significance of the coloration and its particular components in the recognition process remains unknown. We presented dummies of the European sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) with changed body coloration, but with all other typical features preserved (body size and shape, beak, eyes, legs), to great tits (Parus major) and blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) visiting a winter feeder. A pigeon (Columba livia f. domestica) dummy was used as a harmless control. Neither tit species showed passive avoidance in the presence of a dummy with an artificial, violet‐white chequered coloration. They obviously did not consider such an object to be a predator despite the presence of the raptor beak, eyes and talons. Sparrowhawk dummies with the coloration completely changed (altered with those of a harmless European robin) or with the typical colour feature removed (barred pattern on the underparts) were considered to be as dangerous as the unmodified sparrowhawk. We discuss the possibility that the effect of salient raptor‐like features such as beak shape, eye coloration, and leg and talons shape overwhelmed the effect of body coloration in these cases. Birds visiting the feeder probably were able to generalize the vigilance towards the sparrowhawk to other realistically coloured dummies, but not to the non‐natural dummy.  相似文献

Swainson’s hawks (Buteo swainsoni) are long-distance migratory raptors that nest primarily in isolated trees located in areas of high grassland density. In recent years, anthropogenic conversion of grassland habitat has raised concerns about the status of the breeding population in the northern Great Plains. In 2013, we initiated a study to investigate the influence of extrinsic factors influencing Swainson’s hawk nesting ecology in north-central South Dakota and south-central North Dakota. Using ground and aerial surveys, we located and monitored nesting Swainson’s hawk pairs: 73 in 2013 and 120 in 2014. We documented 98 successful breeding attempts that fledged 163 chicks; 1.52 and 1.72 fledglings per successful nest in 2013 and 2014, respectively. We used Program MARK to evaluate the influence of land cover on nest survival. The top model, S Dist2Farm+%Hay, indicated that nest survival (fledging at least one chick) decreased as nests were located farther from farm sites and as the percent of hay cover increased within 1200-m of the nest site (34.4%; 95% CI = 27.6%–42.3%). We used logistic regression analysis to evaluate the influence of landscape variables on nest-site selection; Swainson’s hawks selected for nest sites located closer to roads. We suggest that tree belts associated with farm sites, whether occupied or not, provide critical breeding sites for Swainson’s hawks. Additionally, poor breeding success may be related to the late migratory behavior of this species which requires them to occupy marginal habitat due to other raptors occupying the most suitable habitat prior to Swainson’s hawks arriving to the breeding grounds.  相似文献

In this study, cloacal myiasis caused by dipterans of Lucilia genus was found in a rooster (Gallus gallus domesticus) and two Harris's hawks (Parabuteo unicinctus) from Peru. Larval dipteran were collected and preserved in ethanol. Morphological analysis indicated two species: Lucilia sericata in the rooster and in one Harris's hawk, and Lucilia cuprina in the other Harris's hawk. Molecular analysis confirmed the diagnosis by amplification of the nucleotide sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene and internal transcribed spacer 2 region. The sequences were compared with sequence references from a public sequence database, which showed a 100% matched identity. This study demonstrated for first time cloacal myiasis by L. sericata in a domestic bird from Peru and in Harris's hawk. Also, for the first time, L. cuprina was found in a bird of prey.  相似文献

Diversity indices which have been widely used in ecological studies were calculated for each of 135 samples of phytal macrofauna. A comparison of the properties of these indices indicated that they could be grouped into those primarily influenced by dominance (such as Simpson's Index, McIntosh's Index and E(S2)), those primarily influenced by the number of species (such as Menhinick's Index, Margalef's Index and Q), and those intermediate between the other two groups (such as the Shannon—Wiener Index and Brillouin's Index). Evenness indices were also calculated but were found to be highly dependent on sample size and consequently difficult to interpret.Environmental correlates of dominance and the number of species per plant indicated that these two community parameters were relatively independent. Dominance and animal density were related as both appeared to be monotonically increasing functions of the level of food resources. The number of species was dependent on the weight of sampled algae but was also strongly influenced by wave exposure and habitat complexity (sensu number of microhabitats rather than rugosity). The wave exposure effects were interrelated to habitat structure; elongate plants having the greatest animal species densities at the sheltered site and compact plants having the greatest species densities at the exposed site.  相似文献

Ovulation rate (OR) was studied in two experiments using mature Border Leicester × Merino ewes in which oestrous cycles were synchronized using a prostaglandin analogue. In both experiments a basal ration of 500 g of lucerne/barley pellets was provided. In the first experiment, ewes were fed individually iso-energy supplements of 500 g of either peas, lupins, soybean pellets or lucerne/barley pellets. The ovulation studied at laparoscopy occurred approximately 34 days after starting the supplementary feeding. Ewes fed lupins or soybean pellets had higher (P < 0.05) OR's than the ewes fed the other diets. In the second experiment, ewes were fed either iso-protein supplements of peas or lupins or casein supplement (170 or 100 g of protein) either formalin treated or untreated. The ovulations studied at laparoscopy occurred approximately either 17 or 34 days after the first feeding of the supplement. Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels in plasma were measured over the 8 days prior to the second ovulation. There were no differences (P < 0.05) in OR's at the first ovulation. However, by the second, ewes fed peas had the highest (P < 0.05) OR while those fed lupins or protected casein had similar OR's. These tended to be higher than in the ewes fed untreated casein. FSH levels were generally higher from 8 days to 3 days prior to ovulation in ewes which were to have twin ovulations compared to those having single ovulations. The results confirm that feeding high energy or high protein will increase OR. There are independent effects of energy and protein. The results suggested that the ovulation rate may be related to FSH levels.  相似文献

Women's body attractiveness is influenced by specific anthropometric cues, including body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-stature ratio (WSR), and shoulder-to-waist ratio (SWR). Despite the existence of multiple functional hypotheses to explain these preferences, it remains unclear which cue-based inferences are most influential in regulating evaluations of women's body attractiveness. We argue that (i) the common link to the morphological cues that influence women's body attractiveness is that they all reliably indicate high reproductive value (as defined by youth and low parity); and (ii) ancestrally, selection pressures related to tracking between-women differences in reproductive value would have been among the strongest acting on adaptations for body evaluation. An empirical study then tested the resulting prediction that cue-based estimates of reproductive value function as powerful regulators of women's body attractiveness judgments. Subjects viewed standardized photos of women in swimsuits (with heads obscured), and were assigned to either estimate components of their reproductive value (age or number of offspring) or rate their attractiveness. Structural equation modeling revealed that a latent variable capturing estimated reproductive value was almost perfectly correlated with a latent variable capturing body attractiveness. Moreover, unique associations of women's BMI, WHR, and WSR with their body attractiveness were entirely mediated via estimated reproductive value. These findings provide strong support for the longstanding hypothesis that women's body attractiveness is primarily explained by cue-based estimates of reproductive value – expected future utility as a vehicle of offspring production.  相似文献
