Sympatric and taxonomically related species may present pre- and/or postzygotic mechanisms for reproductive isolation. We compared the phenology and reproductive biology of Byrsonima intermedia and B. pachyphylla, two sympatric Malpighiaceae species, growing in a remnant of Cerrado in Central Brazil. Both species are evergreens and do not have an overlapping flowering period. In both species, dispersal occurs during the rainy season with low and intermediate overlap in the production of immature and mature fruits, respectively. Both species exhibit self-incompatibility (SI), or, in the case of B. intermedia, facultative SI, and, hence, depend on pollinators to compensate for the lack of spontaneous self-pollination. The flowers of the Byrsonima species were visited by fifteen species of bees that collected pollen and/or oil. Based on their more appropriate intrafloral posture, Epicharis flava and Centris varia were the main pollinators of both species, presenting more frequent visits and/or exhibiting trapline foraging behavior, tending to promote outcrossing. Temporal variation in flowering period and total or partial self-incompatibility seem to function as prezygotic isolation mechanisms that form barriers to gene flow between the studied species and probably avoid competition among pollinators. Both species make oil and pollen available to flower visitors and pollinators almost the entire year, but since Byrsonima intermedia has a long flowering time and is very abundant in the study area, it seems to be more important in maintaining flower-visiting bees.  相似文献

Leishmania is a digenetic protozoan parasite causing leishmaniasis in humans. The different clinical forms of leishmaniasis are caused by more than twenty species of Leishmania that are transmitted by nearly thirty species of phlebotomine sand flies. Pentavalent antimonials (such as Pentostam or Glucantime) are the first line drugs for treating leishmaniasis. Recent studies suggest that pentavalent antimony (Sb(V)) acts as a pro-drug, which is converted to the more active trivalent form (Sb(III)). However, sensitivity to trivalent antimony varies among different Leishmania species. In general, Leishmania species causing cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) are more sensitive to Sb(III) than the species responsible for visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Leishmania aquaglyceroporin (AQP1) facilitates the adventitious passage of antimonite down a concentration gradient. In this study, we show that Leishmania species causing CL accumulate more antimonite, and therefore exhibit higher sensitivity to antimonials, than the species responsible for VL. This species-specific differential sensitivity to antimonite is directly proportional to the expression levels of AQP1 mRNA. We show that the stability of AQP1 mRNA in different Leishmania species is regulated by their respective 3’-untranslated regions. The differential regulation of AQP1 mRNA explains the distinct antimonial sensitivity of each species.  相似文献

Closely related host species are known to show variation in the level of resistance towards the same or similar parasite species, but this phenomenon is understudied. Such studies are important for understanding the ecological factors that might promote susceptibility or resistance to parasites: in particular, whether one host species is a larger target of selection for the parasite by virtue of being more abundant locally or more regionally widespread than another host species. In this study, we examined the expression of resistance by two closely related species of damselflies (Nehalennia irene and Nehalennia gracilis) against an Arrenurus water mite species. We show that the host species at each of two isolated sphagnum bogs have statistically indistinguishable levels of prevalence and intensity of infection by mite larvae. Despite having similar measures of parasitism, the regionally less represented species (N. gracilis) showed total resistance, whereas the regionally well-represented species (N. irene) was completely susceptible. Moreover, the form of resistance expressed by N. gracilis was unique, in that the oral glands of the mite were melanised. Also, this mite species was not found outside of isolated bog habitats. These results suggest that there might have been strong historical selection from this mite on the bog specialist, N. gracilis, and that this selection may have resulted in resistance evolving to fixation in a series of isolated populations.  相似文献

On the assumption that the “float” apparatus of Azolla arose by the “capture” and retention of separate floats developed as massulae round abortive megaspores, a model is proposed, accounting hypothetically for the separate origin of three-floated, nine-floated, fifteen-floated and twenty-four-floated species in different types of cytological behaviour during origin of the functional megaspore. It is considered irrelevant to ask whether nine-floated arose from three-floated or vice versa. Each type arose de novo and possibly more than once, out of the initial cytological situation which is constant for all species. An abnormal form of Azolla imbricata is described, which in terms of the model appears to represent a reversion to a Salvinia-like ancestral form, by loss of linked genes responsible for the Azolla “syndrome”.Anatomical and morphological studies on five modern and two Paleocene species are used to illustrate adaptation of perine as float-retaining mechanisms. A new structure, the manicula, produced from the perispore, is described in A. teschiana and A. velus.  相似文献

Variation in tree biomass among African savanna species of equal size is driven by a wide inter-specific variation in wood specific gravity.

Abstract

Tree form and taper is a fundamental component of tree structure and has been used for over a century in forestry to estimate timber yields and in ecological theories of scaling laws. Here, we investigate variation in form factor in the context of biomass in African savannas. Biomass is a fundamental metric of vegetation state, yet in African savannas it remains unclear whether variation in form factor F (taper) or wood specific gravity (G) is a more dominant driver of biomass differences between tree species of equal stem diameter and height. Improving our knowledge of vertical mass distribution in savanna trees provides insight into differences in life strategies, such as tradeoffs between production, disturbance avoidance, and water storage. Here, we destructively harvested 782 stems in a savanna woodland near Kruger National Park, South Africa, and measured whole tree wet mass, wood specific gravity, water content, and form factor. We found that three of four dominant species can vary in mass by over twofold, yet inter-specific variation in taper was low and taper did not vary significantly between common species (P > 0.05) (species-mean form factors ranged from F = 0.57 to 0.77, where cone F =  $0.\bar{3}$ , quadratic paraboloid F = 0.5, cylinder F = 1.0). Comparison of a general biomass allometry model to species-specific models supported the conclusion that the large difference in biomass between species of the same size was explained almost entirely (R 2 = 0.97) by including species-mean G with D and H in a general allometric equation, where F was constant. Our results suggest that inter-specific variation in wood density, not form factor, is the primary driver of biomass differences between species of the same size. We also determined that a simple analytical volume-filling model accurately relates wood specific gravity of these species to their water and gas content (R 2 = 0.68). These results indicate which species use a wide spectrum of water storage strategies in savanna woodlands, adhering to a trade-off between the benefits of denser wood or increased water storage.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis is presented, based on 57 morphological, anatomical, chemical and ecological characters, including 19 species from the generaArthonia,ArthotheliumandSyncesia. The aim of the study was to test the monophyly of some of the groups within the genusArthoniasuggested, for example, by Redinger (e.g. species with reddish ascomata, with grey–pruinose ascomata and with brown–black hypothecia). The results strongly support thatArthoniaandArthotheliumare paraphyletic genera. The best-supported node contains allArthoniaspecies together withA. crozalsianade Lesd.,A. ruanaA. Massal. (both hitherto placed inArthothelium) andSyncesia myrticola(Fée) Tehler. A well-supported clade is formed by a group of pioneer species, often non-lichenized or poorly lichenized, including the type species ofArthonia,A. radiata. The species with reddish and/or K+ reddish ascomata form one clade and the species with more or less brownish or blackish hypothecia form another clade withSyncesia myrticola, the sister group to theOpegraphaceaeandRoccellaceae. The results are discussed and compared with Redinger’s grouping. Relationships to other genera within Arthoniaceae are briefly discussed.Arthothelium scandinavicumTh. Fr.,Arthonia dispersa(Schrad.) Nyl.,A. punctiformisAch. andA. mediellaNyl. are lectotypified.  相似文献

The architecture of the branching system in species of Pappophoreae (Poaceae) has not been studied in detail. This work covers the spatial and temporal variation of the shoot system in species of Cottea, Enneapogon, Kaokochloa, Pappophorum and Schmidtia (Pappophoreae). Growth form variation of the species of Pappophoreae is related to the different functions of the axillary buds. We identify six growth form models within Pappophoreae. These models represent reference points along a continuum of variations that are characteristic of certain genera or species within a genus.  相似文献

Striped parrotfish (Scarus iserti) often form heterospecific groups with other reef fishes. In this study, we examined the species and body size composition of these groups on reefs in The Bahamas. Groups averaged approximately 4 S.?iserti and 2 associated species, with surgeonfish (Acanthurus chirurgus and A.?bahianus), slippery dick (Halichoeres bivittatus), and bluehead wrasse (Thalassoma bifasciatum) as the most common associates. Fewer groups than expected had only 1 associate; groups with 3 or more associates were more common than expected. Both the S.?iserti and associated species tended to be closely size-matched within a group, perhaps due to benefits of size assortment in lowering predation risk. Likewise, the high frequency of groups with greater than a single associate species suggests that associates may benefit from not being the only phenotypically different individual in a group.  相似文献

Abstract:A taxonomic revision of the lichenized species of the genus Omphalina in the Iberian Peninsula is presented, based upon fungal and lichen herbarium material, as well as on fresh collections. Relevant morphological and ecological features are discussed and a diagnostic key is provided. Four lichenized species, O. ericetorum, O. hudsoniana, O. meridionalis and O. velutina, are recognized. A squamulose vegetative thallus (Coriscium -type) is present only in O. hudsoniana, while the other three species form a thallus of hyphal globules (Botrydina -type). Anatomical features of the vegetative thallus cannot be used to distinguish between these last three species. Whilst O. hudsoniana is known only from the montane belt of the Eurosiberian Region and O. meridionalis seems to be restricted to the Mediterranean Region, living in more or less humid sites of the Supramediterranean belt, the other two species, O. ericetorum and O. velutina, are widespread.  相似文献

Following an invasion of exotic annual grasses into California oak woodlands, grass species dominance shifted from native perennials to exotic annuals. In combination with other ecosystem and species characteristics, species-specific N preferences may influence species coexistence and dominance. If species N preferences follow dominance patterns in California oak woodlands, then the more dominant exotic grasses should prefer the most abundant inorganic soil N form (NH4+), while the subordinate native grasses should prefer the less available inorganic (NO3?) or organic (glycine) soil N forms. To investigate this prediction, we applied 15N-labeled NH4+, NO3?, and glycine to soil and measured % 15N recovery by two dominant annual grasses (Bromus diandrus and Bromus hordeaceus) and two subordinate perennial grasses (Elymus glaucus and Nassella pulchra). As expected, shoots of B. diandrus recovered more 15N-NH4+ (74%) than either 15N-NO3? (51%) or 15N-glycine (39%). B. diandrus also captured at least 3.2 times more 15N-NH4+ than subordinate grasses. Dominant B. hordeaceus, however, demonstrated no N form preferences. As hypothesized, shoots of subordinate E. glaucus and N. pulchra recovered 2.1–2.3 times more 15N-NO3? than 15N-NH4+ and increased %N by 4.8–5.7% in response to the application of 15N-NO3?. Both subordinate grasses did not prefer 15N-glycine over 15N-NH4+, suggesting that the importance of this N form in structuring species coexistence in California oak woodlands is minimal. These results support our theory that species N preferences follow dominance patterns in California oak woodlands. To further understand the role of these species-specific N preferences in structuring dominance, the importance of N form versus such characteristics as rooting distribution and species phenologies needs to be explored in the presence of interspecific competition.  相似文献

Trichothecenes are sesquiterpenoid toxins produced by Fusarium species. Since these mycotoxins are very stable, there is interest in microbial transformations that can remove toxins from contaminated grain or cereal products. Twenty-three yeast species assigned to the Trichomonascus clade (Saccharomycotina, Ascomycota), including four Trichomonascus species and 19 anamorphic species presently classified in Blastobotrys, were tested for their ability to convert the trichothecene T-2 toxin to less-toxic products. These species gave three types of biotransformations: acetylation to 3-acetyl T-2 toxin, glycosylation to T-2 toxin 3-glucoside, and removal of the isovaleryl group to form neosolaniol. Some species gave more than one type of biotransformation. Three Blastobotrys species converted T-2 toxin into T-2 toxin 3-glucoside, a compound that has been identified as a masked mycotoxin in Fusarium-infected grain. This is the first report of a microbial whole-cell method for producing trichothecene glycosides, and the potential large-scale availability of T-2 toxin 3-glucoside will facilitate toxicity testing and development of methods for detection of this compound in agricultural and other products.  相似文献

Abstract: The new lichen genus Musaespora is described from Java and Papua New Guinea. It is the first known pyrenocarpous lichen genus with campylidia, and appears to belong to the Aspidotheliaceae. Three species are described, two foliicolous species from Papua New Guinea and one corticolous species from Java. In addition, a list is given of the foliicolous lichen flora of the site in Papua New Guinea, where the foliicolous Musaespora species have been found, two more new foliicolous species are described, Echinoplaca hispida and Sporopodium lucidum, and 19 species are recorded for the first time form Papua New Guinea.  相似文献

Ten species of Copestylum (Diptera: Syrphidae) were reared from fruits and flowers in Costa Rica, Ecuador and Trinidad. Seven were new and in this paper, we describe them, their development sites and the third stage larva and/or the puparium of all ten species. One new synonym is proposed, Copestylum pinkusi (Curran) [= Copestylum cinctiventre (Curran)]. Similarities and differences between these new and other Copestylum species, suggest they separate into two groups, referred to as the Vagum and Cinctiventre species groups. Features characterising these groups for both adult and early stages are assessed. Each species was also distinguished using adult and early stage characters. Within the Vagum group, adults were more disparate morphologically than the larval stage; this was reversed in the Cinctiventre group. Adult colour patterns are probably cryptic in function and for disguise. Vagum species have disruptive marks, while the Cinctiventre species have reflective colours. Biologically, the groups are almost distinguished by larval development sites. Vagum species use predominantly fruits and have a larval stage that is relatively generalised in form and habit. Cinctiventre species are confined to developing in flowers and the larva is more specialised. A key to both adult and early stages of all ten species is provided.  相似文献

The final step in the erythrocyte methemoglobin reduction pathway, the transfer of an electron from cytochrome b5, to methemoglobin, has been studied using magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. Spectral analysis allowed us to determine accurately the concentration of each redox species in mixtures of the two heme-proteins and to follow simultaneously the kinetics of the appearance or disappearance of each of these species during reduction reactions. Our analysis detected a substantial increase in the high-spin hydroxymethemoglobin species in the partially reduced bovine hemoglobin tetramer. This species was sensitive to the degree of reduction and pH, and was spectrally similar to fluoride methemoglobin. At pH 7.8. 100% of the hydroxide component of methemoglobin was in the high-spin form when two or more subunits were in the ferrous form. Kinetic analysis of bovine methemoglobin reduction yielded values for the apparent first-order rates for the tetrameric species possessing four, three, two, and one ferric subunit. Further analysis showed that the reduction kinetics can also be described by an equilibrium state, pure competitive inhibition model for enzyme catalysis in which ferrous and ferric subunits of hemoglobin compete for cytochrome b5 This analysis generated a KD that depends on ionic strength and hemoglobin tetramer conformation, a Vmax that was independent of these factors, and an inhibition constant that was equal to Kd. This model is consistent with the hypothesis that the reduction of methemoglobin can be separated into two steps, the ionic interaction between cytochrome b5 and hemoglobin and the electron transfer.  相似文献

The site of Tighennif (= Ternifine) in Northern Algeria, well-known for its Homo mauritanicus (= Homo rhodesiensis?) remains, and probably dating to the late Calabrian, yielded a large assemblage of terrestrial carnivores. Some are identical or probably identical with extant species: Crocuta crocuta and Hyaena hyaena (Hyaenidae), Felis silvestris (Felidae), Mellivora capensis and Poecilictis cf. libyca (Mustelidae), and Vulpes cf. rueppelli (Canidae). In addition, among felids there is an unidentified leopard-like form; a smaller, more common species assigned to Lynx sp. (a genus quite rare in Africa) but which is certainly different from modern forms, an Homotherium that seems to be the last occurrence of the machairodonts in Africa, and a Panthera aff. leo, which is unfortunately too poorly known to be named. Rare bears do not display all derived features of later North African U. bibersoni. Among canids, the Nyctereutes-like jackal Lupulella mohibi is an endemic North African form known until the late middle Pleistocene, and the hunting dog Lycaon magnus is also clearly distinct from the modern species. A single new species is described, Enhydrictis hoffstetteri, a large, otter-like member of the Mustelidae, of a genus that was previously unknown from Africa, and certainly testifies to North–South dispersal across the Mediterranean at some time during the early Pleistocene.  相似文献

The genus Ochrolechia is widespread in Spain and Portugal and now includes 14 species, 1 form and 4 chemical races (11 species and 3 chemical races are epiphytes, 2 species, 1 form and 1 chemical race are saxicolous and one species is muscicolous). We propose a new combination: O. dalmatica (Erichsen) Boqueras. Eight species are excluded from the Spanish and Portuguese floras: O. aggregata (Bagl.) Verseghy, O. anomala Verseghy, O. glaucescens (Hue) Zahlbr., O.frigida (Sw.) Lynge, O. pseudotartarea (Vain.) Verseghy, O. rosella Müll. Arg., O. subpallescens Verseghy, O. tenuissima Verseghy, O. crozalsiana Clauzade et Vêzda is included in O. tartarea. The criteria for the identification of these species are: 1 ) the chemical substances (the presence/absence of gyrophoric acid in the thallus and/or in the apothecia determines the groups inside of the genus, the presence of alectoronic acid determines the chemical races); 2) thallus with or without soredia or isidia; 3) the presence of pruina on the disc; and 4) the substratum. A key for the identification to all mentioned species is included.  相似文献

Studies in plant demography are primarily done at the level of ramets and typically collect ramet-related parameters such as ramet size, type and history. This approach ignores possible effects of factors associated with higher levels, such as genet or tussock. This is particularly important in perennial resprouting herbs with persistent root that consists of many ramets as interaction between ramets, both by competition and by resource sharing, are likely to be intense in these plants. This study investigates effects of tussock-level parameters (age, size and ramet position within tussock and ramet density) on performance of individual ramets in two tussock-forming resprouting herbs (Tanacetum vulgare and Centaurea jacea). The results show that position of a ramet within tussock did not affect ramet growth, but had significant effects on flowering and survival in both species. The direction of the effect differed between the two species; marginal ramets were more successful in T. vulgare, while central ramets were more successful in C. jacea. In addition, tussock age had a significant effect on ramet flowering and survival in T. vulgare. Both these effects are likely to be due to the more competitive life form of T. vulgare, which is restricted to temporary habitats with intense competition. C. jacea is a species of mown or grazed grasslands with lower productivity, which are more stable and where competition is weaker. The effects of the number of neighboring ramets and of the tussock size were significant, but often locality-specific.The results indicate that although many important effects of tussock-related parameters exist, their direction and magnitude differ between species or even populations and are thus not easily predictable. Neglecting these effects, however, is likely to make the demographic models weaker.  相似文献

α,ω-Bis(diphenylphosphino)alkane and α,ω-bis(diphenylphosphino)(poly)ether ligands can be prepared in very high yields via reaction of the appropriate dihalide with two equivalents of LiPPh2. For the [Rh(COD)(P P)][ClO4] complexes of these ligands, the P P ligands with five or less atoms in the alkane or ether bridge form monomeric complexes via η2-coordination. In general the ligands with eight or more atoms in the bridge give di- or polynuclear species. In addition the long chain diphosphino-polyethers form – to a small extent – monomeric species by η2-coordination.  相似文献

Two new species of Microsporida belonging to the genus Microsporidium are described. Microsporidium goeldichironomi n. sp. parasitizes the fat body of Goeldichironomus holoprasinus and Microsporidium chironomi n. sp. infects Chironomus attenuatus. Both microsporidia form uninucleate spores from rosette-shaped sporonts. M. goeldichironomi sporonts form 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, and possibly more spores. Two shapes of spores are produced, oval, or slightly pyriform spores measuring 3.70 ± 0.09 × 2.49 ± 0.13 μm and pyriform spores measuring 3.74 ± 0.44 × 2.04 ± 0.17 μm. Electron micrographs show that both types of spores are uninucleate, have 8 to 11 polar filament coils and a lamellate polaroplast showing several distinct regions. M. chironomi spores are pyriform and are often joined at the posterior end in groups of two or four. They measure 4.12 ± 0.37 × 2.45 ± 0.26 μm. The spores are uninucleate, have six to seven polar filament coils and a lamellate polaroplast showing two distinct regions. Neither species can be transmitted per os and thus are assumed to be transovarially transmitted. No pansporoblastic membrane is present in either species.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The order Piperales has the highest diversity of growth forms among the earliest angiosperm lineages, including trees, shrubs, climbers and herbs. However, within the perianth-bearing Piperales (Asarum, Saruma, Lactoris, Hydnora, Prosopanche, Thottea and Aristolochia), climbing species only occur in the most species-rich genus Aristolochia. This study traces anatomical and morphological traits among these lineages, to detect trends in growth form evolution and developmental processes.

Methods

Transverse stem sections of different developmental stages of representatives of Asarum, Saruma, Lactoris, Hydnora, Thottea and Aristolochia were compared and anatomical traits were linked to growth form evolution. Biomechanical properties of representative climbers were determined in three-point bending tests and are discussed based on the anatomical observations. Growth form evolution of the perianth-bearing Piperales was reconstructed by ancestral character state reconstruction using Mesquite.

Key Results

While species of Asarum and Saruma are exclusively herbaceous, species of the remaining genera show a higher diversity of growth habit and anatomy. This growth form diversity is accompanied by a more complex stem anatomy and appropriate biomechanical properties. The ancestral growth form of the perianth-bearing Piperales is reconstructed with either a shrub-like or herbaceous character state, while the following three backbone nodes in the reconstruction show a shrub-like character state. Accordingly, the climbing habit most probably evolved in the ancestor of Aristolochia.

Conclusions

Since the ancestor of the perianth-bearing Piperales has been reconstructed with a herb- or shrub-like habit, it is proposed that the climbing habit is a derived growth form, which evolved with the diversification of Aristolochia, and might have been a key feature for its diversification. Observed anatomical synapomorphies, such as the perivascular fibres in Lactoris, Thottea and Aristolochia, support the phylogenetic relationship of several lineages within the perianth-bearing Piperales. In addition, the hypothesis that the vegetative organs of the holoparasitic Hydnoraceae are most probably rhizomes is confirmed.  相似文献
