Sexual communication in animals often involves duetting characterized by a coordinated reciprocal exchange of acoustic signals. We used playback experiments to study the role of timing of a female reply in the species-specific duet structure in the leafhopper Aphrodes makarovi (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae). In leafhoppers, mate recognition and location is mediated exclusively by species- and sex-specific substrate-borne vibrational signals and a female signal emitted in reply to male advertisement calls is essential for recognition and successful location of the female. In A. makarovi, males have to initiate each exchange of vibrational signals between partners, and in a duet the beginning of a female reply overlaps the end of the male advertisement call. Results of playback treatments in which female replies were delayed and did not overlap with the male call revealed that in order to trigger an appropriate behavioural response of the male, female reply has to appear in a period less than 400 ms after the end of the initiating male call. Results also suggest that males are not able to detect a female reply while calling, since female reply that did not continue after the end of male call triggered male behaviour similar to behaviour observed in the absence of female reply. Together, our results show that vibrational duets are tightly coordinated and that the species-specific duet structure plays an important role in mate recognition in location processes.  相似文献

A female Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica, will increase her tendency to affiliate and mate with a conspecific male after seeing him court and mate with another female. In the present study, we found that female quail increased the time they spent near a live target male after seeing that same male court and mate with another female in a 5-min video displayed on an active-matrix TFT monitor. However, female quail that were shown 5-min video sequences of either a target male standing alone or a randomly selected male courting and mating did not subsequently increase the time they spent near a live target male. These findings provide the first demonstration of which we are aware of birds transferring individual identification from a video sequence to a real animal. Juvenile hormone (JH)-dependent vitellogenin (Vg) synthesis in the fat body of Locusta migratoria is normally limited to sexually mature adult females. As a step toward examining the basis of this limitation, we have tested female and male locusts in a series of stages after the third larval molt for inducibility of Vg synthesis by the synthetic JH analog, methoprene. We find that in the fourth and fifth larval instars fat body of both sexes can be induced to produce Vg, but in the adult stage females respond strongly while no more than trace amounts can be induced in males. Quantitative assays show relative responsiveness in the order: adult female > fifth instar female > fifth instar male ? adult male. During the fifth instar of both sexes, maximal vitellogenic response was obtained in midinstar. After the larval-adult ecdysis, female fat body was unresponsive during the first 4 days, then responsiveness increased and by Day 8 after ecdysis fat bodies were fully as competent to produce Vg as at Day 14, the usual maximum of the first vitellogenic cycle due to endogenous JH. Larval and adult female fat bodies implanted into male larvae are competent for Vg synthesis after metamorphosis, so that the differences between adult male and female cannot be imposed by the male milieu intérieur during the larval-adult molt. In male and female precocious adults, produced by treatment of fourth instars with precocene, fat body responded to methoprene as in normal adults. We conclude that factors intrinsic to the fat body cells, determined early in development, are responsible for differential gene programing in males and females, which is partially expressed by the fifth instar but fully manifest only after a molt in the absence of JH.  相似文献

Antilochus coquebertii F. (Hemiptera: Pyrrhocoridae) is one of the most important and voracious feeders of Dysdercus spp. First time, this study explained the feeding ethogram of both male and female A. coquebertii on Dysdercus koenigii adults (both male and female). Female adults of A. coquebertii consumed maximum prey (97.78 %) with respect to male (90.91%). The pre-feeding time was recorded maximum in male adults (12.22 min) as compared to female adults (4.1 min). In case of paralysis time, female adults take more time (0.47 min) as compared to male adults (0.46 min). Both male and female adults of A. coquebertii exhibited different preferences towards different body parts of D. koenigii with variable feeding time and number of feedings. Feeding ethogram showed that both of male and female A. coquebertii adults use their antennae in olfactory and gustatory sense. Based on feeding time, abdomen was more favored by male adults and thorax by female adults. While, in case of number of feedings, male adults of A. coquebertii preferred to feed on head and female on thorax of D. koenigii. Increase in body weight of female adults of A. coquebertii after feeding on its prey was found maximum (0.92 g) as compared to male adult (0.66 g). According to these findings, antennae of A. coquebertii have olfactory and gustatory sense while proboscis kept gustatory sense. Female adults of A. coquebertii is more efficient feeder of D. koenigii than male. Abdomen of D. koenigii was more preferred by male adults, while thorax by female adults of A. coquebertii.  相似文献

Schistosomiasis is caused by dioecious helminths of the genus Schistosoma. Recent work indicated that unpaired female and male schistosomes can survive within their definitive host for at least 1 year, although the viability or fertility of these worms after subsequent pairing remained untested. We performed two experiments on laboratory mice, one with female Schistosoma japonicum exposure first and male schistosomes second and another vice versa. After surviving as single-sex unpaired forms for up to 1 year, 58.5% of male and 70% of female schistosomes were able to mate and produce viable eggs. This highlights an additional biological challenge in achieving elimination of schistosomiasis.  相似文献

Adults of Tribolium confusum secrete two pheromones. The first, produced by the male, is attractive to both sexes and the second, produced by the female, is attractive to the male only. Pheromone production and perception was studied in relation to habituation, beetle age, time of day and previous mating. A living source of each pheromone habituates the responding beetles, the male pheromone habituating more strongly; female pheromone habituates only in the absence of the male pheromone. Habituation to one pheromone was always accompanied by an enhanced response to the other.Five days after emergence, production of male pheromone reaches a peak that is maintained. Production of female pheromone peaks after 3 days. Both sexes are responsive to male pheromone immediately upon eclosion, males reaching maximum response at 14 days, females at 8 days. Males are also responsive to female pheromone upon eclosion reaching maximum response at 8 days; female response to female pheromone is imperceptible. Males but not females display a 24 hr rhythm in pheromone production. Mated beetles did not differ significantly from unmated beetles in their ability to perceive pheromones. Alteration in male pheromone production after mating was detected by females but not males; this pheromone may, therefore, act as both a sex and aggregation pheromone.  相似文献

Courtship behaviour in spiders in the form of premating vibrations by males may function (1) as a male identity signal used for species recognition, (2) in suppression of female aggressiveness, (3) to stimulate female mating behaviour, or (4) as a quality signal used in female choice. We investigated the function of web vibration by male Stegodyphus lineatus in a series of experiments. Regardless of vibratory performance, all males mated successfully with virgin females but only 56.4% of males mated with nonvirgin females. Vibratory performance did not influence male mating success, but heavier males had a higher probability of mating with mated females. Males vibrated less often and produced fewer vibrations when introduced on the web of a mated female. Males that vibrated webs of virgin females mated faster than nonvibrating males, but there was no effect of vibration rate or body mass. There was no effect of male vibratory effort or vibration rate on female reproductive success measured as time to egg laying, clutch size, number of hatched young, number of dispersed young and offspring body mass after a single mating. Males vibrated on abandoned virgin female webs but the response decreased with increasing duration of female absence, suggesting that females produce a web-borne pheromone, which elicits male vibrating behaviour. Mated females were less receptive and not stimulated by male vibrating behaviour. We conclude that male premating vibrations in S. lineatus do not function as a male quality signal selected via female choice. Rather, the primary function of this behaviour may be to stimulate a receptive female to mate. In the sorghum plant bug Stenotus rubrovittatus (Matsumura) (Hemiptera: Miridae), mating behavior consists of male courtship and female mating receptivity. Previous studies have found that female age is correlated with ovary development and that mature females with developed ovaries are more receptive to male courtship. Thus, we examined whether male age affects the mating behavior of both sexes and male accessory gland development. Unmated males 0–9 days after emergence and 3-day-old virgin females receptive to male courtship were studied. Immediately after emergence, only 20 % of the males courted females (n = 25). At 3 days old, 68 % of the males courted females (n = 25), the most active age. In contrast, more than 75 % of the courted females were receptive to the male courtship regardless of male age. These results indicate that only male courtship behavior is affected by male age, although it is not enhanced in proportion to male age. Male accessory glands developed with male age. However, no clear relationship was detected between male courtship behavior and accessory gland development. In S. rubrovittatus, it is difficult to explain male courtship behavior solely from male age and accessory gland development.  相似文献

Theoretical and experimental evidence indicates that females copy the mate choice of other females under certain conditions. In all mate choice copying experiments with fish to date, females were allowed to copy the choice of a model female immediately after the focal female had observed a model female interacting with a male. It is not known whether females continue to copy the choice of the model female after a longer interval. We investigated whether sailfin molly females also copy the choice of other females when they are prevented from copying immediately after observing a model female next to a previously nonpreferred male. We performed three copying experiments in which females could copy the choice of the model female immediately after, 1 h after or 1 day after observing the model female next to the previously nonpreferred male. In control experiments, we tested whether females chose consistently when they had no opportunity to copy, and whether females showed shoaling behaviour under these conditions. Females copied the choice of the model female immediately after, 1 h after and even 1 day after the observation of the model female interacting with the previously nonpreferred male. Females chose consistently between males when they had no opportunity to copy, and females did not shoal under these conditions. We conclude that females remember individual males with whom a model female had interacted, even after 1 day. Male seminal fluid proteins are known to affect female reproductive behavior and physiology by reducing mating receptivity and by increasing egg production rates. Such substances are also though to increase the competitive fertilization success of males, but the empirical foundation for this tenet is restricted. Here, we examined the effects of injections of size-fractioned protein extracts from male reproductive organs on both male competitive fertilization success (i.e., P2 in double mating experiments) and female reproduction in the seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus. We found that extracts of male seminal vesicles and ejaculatory ducts increased competitive fertilization success when males mated with females 1 day after the females’ initial mating, while extracts from accessory glands and testes increased competitive fertilization success when males mated with females 2 days after the females’ initial mating. Moreover, different size fractions of seminal fluid proteins had distinct and partly antagonistic effects on male competitive fertilization success. Collectively, our experiments show that several different seminal fluid proteins, deriving from different parts in the male reproductive tract and of different molecular weight, affect male competitive fertilization success in C. maculatus. Our results highlight the diverse effects of seminal fluid proteins and show that the function of such proteins can be contingent upon female mating status. We also document effects of different size fractions on female mating receptivity and egg laying rates, which can serve as a basis for future efforts to identify the molecular identity of seminal fluid proteins and their function in this model species.  相似文献

In sexually dimorphic species characterized by exaggerated male ornamentation, behavioral isolation is often attributed to female preferences for conspecific male signals. Yet, in a number of sexually dimorphic species, male mate choice also results in behavioral isolation. In many of these cases, the female traits that mediate species boundaries are unclear. Females in sexually dimorphic species typically lack many of the elaborate traits that are present in males and that are often used for taxonomic classification of species. In a diverse and largely sexually dimorphic group of fishes called darters (Percidae: Etheostoma), male mate choice contributes to behavioral isolation between a number of species; however, studies addressing which female traits males prefer are lacking. In this study, we identified the dominant female pattern for two sympatric species, Etheostoma zonale and Etheostoma barrenense, using pattern energy analysis, and we used discriminate function analysis to identify which aspects of female patterning can reliably classify species. We then tested the role of female features in male mate choice for E. zonale, by measuring male preference for computer animations displaying the identified (species-specific) conspecific features. We found that the region above the lateral line is important in mediating male mate preferences, with males spending a significantly greater proportion of time with animations exhibiting conspecific female patterning in this region than with animations exhibiting heterospecific female patterning. Our results suggest that the aspects of female phenotypes that are the target of male mate choice are different from the conspicuous male phenotypes that traditionally characterize species.  相似文献

The hypothesis that female sonic stimulus may evoke male pheromone release in a behavioural interaction analogous to the known male sonic stimulus of female pheromone release, was confirmed in Dendroctonus pseudotsugae, and also in D. brevicomis. In both species known male-produced substances collected from males stimulated by recorded female stridulation were identified by coupled gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. In a second test with D. pseudotsugae, male pheromone release during recorded female stridulation was evident in the change of male stridulation from the simple attractant chirp to the interrupted chirp, which is known to result from a medium concentration of 3,2-MCH. Also, the D. pseudotsugae male attractant chirp was synthesised with an electronic pulse generator and used to evoke pheromone release. It is concluded that the antiaggregative pheromone of this species is released by each sex at the sonic stimulus of the other sex.  相似文献

Dobson C. & Owen M. E. 1978. Effect of host sex on passive immunity in mice infected with Nematospiroides dubius. International Journal for Parasitology8: 359–364. Female C3H but not Quackenbush (Q) mice harboured fewer Nematospiroides dubius than male C3H and Q mice. Both strains lost worms 21 days after infection. C3H and Q mice became progressively immune to infection following 4 sequential doses of N. dubius larvae and showed a sex resistance to infection. Hypothymic nu/nu CBA Balb/c mice did not show these effects on N. dubius infection. The reciprocal transfer of male and female immune mesenteric lymph node cells (IMLNC) to syngeneic male and female recipients showed that the female environment enhanced the protective qualities of both male and female IMLNC but the male environment suppressed these effects. Gonadectomized male and female recipients of male and female IMLNC had levels of infection similar to the entire female recipients. Serum from immune female donor mice protected both male and female recipients better than immune serum from male donors, but female mice in each treatment group were better protected than male mice. Immune serum transferred greater levels of protection then IMLNC to recipient mice against N. dubius infections. These data are consistent with the conclusion that the male environment suppresses lymphocyte activity and the production of protective antibodies and additionally may depress the effectiveness of sensitized lymphocytes and antibodies in ejecting N. dubius. On the other hand the female environment does not appear to adversely affect the mobilization of the protective immune response and may enhance immune effector mechanisms in protecting mice against N. dubius infections.  相似文献

The annona (Annona hybrida) flower is protogynous, and reaches its male stage about 26 hours after the beginning of the female stage. A rise in ethylene production was found to precede the male stage. Much more ethylene was produced by the reproductive organs than by the petals, with the anthers producing most of the ethylene. Ethylene treatments advanced the male stage, but not the female stage. Exposing flowers to hypobaric pressure postponed the onset of their male stage. Application of various growth substances causing ethylene production by the flower advanced the male stage.  相似文献

The previously reported attractant chirp of male Dendroctonus pseudotsugae changed to a distinctive long interrupted chirp after several minutes in the female gallery, and the same chirp occurred during fighting with another male. It was experimentally evoked by synthetic 3-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-one and frontalin, both known pheromone components of the male. A different, short, uninterrupted male chirp emitted shortly before copulation, was not evoked by these pheromones. It is suggested that chemostimulus allows or maintains dual contexts for the interrupted chirp. Observation of premating and mating behaviour showed some initial male aggressiveness with the female that subsided as gallery cooperation was established before mating and as the uninterrupted chirp replaced the interrupted chirp.  相似文献

Post-mating reduction in immune defence is common in female insects, and a trade-off between mating and immunity could affect the evolution of immunity. In this work, we tested the capacity of virgin and mated female Drosophila melanogaster to defend against infection by four bacterial pathogens. We found that female D. melanogaster suffer post-mating immunosuppression in a pathogen-dependent manner. The effect of mating was seen after infection with two bacterial pathogens (Providencia rettgeri and Providencia alcalifaciens), though not after infection with two other bacteria (Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). We then asked whether the evolution of post-mating immunosuppression is primarily a ‘female’ or ‘male’ trait by assaying for genetic variation among females for the degree of post-mating immune suppression they experience and among males for the level of post-mating immunosuppression they elicit in their mates. We also assayed for an interaction between male and female genotypes to test the specific hypothesis that the evolution of a trade-off between mating and immune defence in females might be being driven by sexual conflict. We found that females, but not males, harbour significant genetic variation for post-mating immunosuppression, and we did not detect an interaction between female and male genotypes. We thus conclude that post-mating immune depression is predominantly a ‘female’ trait, and find no evidence that it is evolving under sexual conflict.  相似文献

Female qualities in males are common in vertebrates but have not been extensively reported in insects. Vitellogenin (Vg) is highly expressed in the female fat body and is generally required for the formation of yolk proteins in the insect egg. Vg upregulation is generally regarded as a female quality in female oviparous animals. In this study, we found that Bombyx mori Vg (BmVg) is especially highly expressed in the female pupa. Downregulation of the BmVg gene in the female pupa by RNA interference (RNAi) interfered with egg formation and embryonic development, showing the importance of BmVg in these processes. So, we used BmVg as a biomarker for female qualities in the silkworm. Hematoxylin-eosin staining and immunofluorescence histochemistry showed that ovary transplants induced BmVg synthesis in the male pupa fat body. Ovaries transplanted into male silkworms produced only a few eggs with deformed yolk granules. These results suggested that the amount of BmVg in the male silkworm was insufficient for eggs to undergo complete embryonic development. After 17-beta-estradiol was used to treat male pupae and male pupal fat bodies, BmVg was upregulated in vivo and in vitro. These findings indicated that the male silkworm has innate female qualities that were induced by a transplanted ovary and 17β-estradiol. However, in silkworms, female qualities in males are not as complete as in females.  相似文献

BackgroundPreterm female infants have a survival advantage and enhanced lung development, which is an important determinant of preterm survival.ObjectiveGiven the modulation of lung development by fetal exposure to infection/inflammation, we hypothesized that female fetuses have enhanced lung maturational responses to chorioamnionitis compared with male fetuses.MethodsTime-pregnant ewes received intra-amniotic injections with saline (n = 60) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) at 2 days (n = 30) or 7 days (n = 45) before surgical delivery at 123 to 125 days of gestation (term: ∼147 days). We assessed inflammatory responses in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and cord blood, lung maturation with pressure-volume curves, and lung structure.ResultsLung gas volume showed differences between the sexes after 2 days LPS (male 4.6 [1.2] mL/kg, female 7.7 [4.4] mL/kg; P = 0.02) and 7 days LPS (male 20.5 [9.3] mL/kg, female 27.0 [7.0] mL/kg; P = 0.01). The control group was not different by sex (male 8.0 [3.6] mL/kg, female 8.9 [3.9] mL/kg; P > 0.05). No difference in lung structure and in pulmonary and systemic inflammatory response was evident by sex.ConclusionPreterm female sheep fetuses had increased lung gas volumes after exposure to LPS, without any detectable differences in fetal inflammatory responses.  相似文献

Female remating in target pest species can affect the efficacy of control methods such as the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) but very little is known about the postcopulatory mating behavior of these pests. In this study, we investigated the remating behavior of female Anastrepha serpentina (Diptera: Tephritidae), an oligophagous pest of Sapotaceae. First, we tested how long the sexual refractory period of females lasted after an initial mating. Second, we tested the effect of male and female sterility, female ovipositing opportunities and male density on female propensity to remate. Lastly, we tested if the amount of sperm stored by females was correlated to the likelihood of females to remate. We found that receptivity of mass-reared A. serpentina females had a bimodal response, with up to 16% of mass-reared A. serpentina females remating five days after the initial copulation, decreasing to 2% at 10 and 15 days and increasing to 13% after 20 days. Compared to fertile males, sterile males were less likely to mate and less likely to inhibit females from remating. Copula duration of sterile males was shorter compared to fertile males. Remating females were less likely to mate with a sterile male as a second mate. Sterile females were less likely to mate or remate compared to fertile females. Opportunity to oviposit and male density had no effect on female remating probability. Sperm numbers were not correlated with female likelihood to remate. Information on the post-copulatory behavior of mass-reared A. serpentina will aid fruit fly managers in improving the quality of sterile males. We discuss our results in terms of the differences this species presents in female remating behavior compared to other tephritids.  相似文献
